OJT EATS | Blacklock Covent Garden

A while ago now, Blacklock opened a new restaurant in Covent Garden.  Having been to a good number of their other locations (read about our trip to their Shoreditch outpost here), it was only a matter of time before we gave this one a go.  We decided to pop in for a quick lunch the other day.
The first challenge was finding the place.  It’s nestled in a bit of an alleyway but luckily there is a pretty clear sign on the wall nearby that lets you know that you are close.

Having headed downstairs into the restaurant, it was straight onto starters with this cull yaw crumpet.  Cull yaw is a type of mutton and Blacklock slow roasts it overnight before putting it on a crumpet and putting some pickled onions on top.  As with most things in Blacklock, it comes with a little gravy boat full of super rich and more-ish gravy.  The yaw was full of flavour and roasted to meltingly tender; a super meaty great little starter.

Pigs head on toast.  An everpresent item on the Blacklock menu, this is as good as it always is.  The toast is hearty enough to soak up all the pork juices as well as the gravy and the pigs head is deliciously unctuous.  One of my favourite starters across London I think.

After all of that meat, we thought we should at least have a little bit of veg so ordered the cauliflower and sprouts with chestnuts.  The cauliflower turned out to be romanesco cauliflower which was a little different but very tasty and as a big fan of sprouts, this was a great little side.

Seeing as this was lunch, we thought we’d keep it (relatively) light with a steak sandwich rather than go either the all in (which gives you a bunch of chops) or a big ass steak.  The steak sandwich has a decent amount of perfectly medium rare steak in it along with a good dash of horesradish and some greenery, all between a couple of slices of toasted sourdough; so good!
All in all, a very meaty but very tasty lunch!  Blacklock always seems to deliver when you are looking for good value meat, whether it be a couple of meaty starters, a steak sandwich or even a big cut of steak.

So I finally had the @blacklockchops Sunday roast. We had initially booked for Soho and had to wait for over 2 months for availability, but with news that the Covent Garden restaurant was opening, I was there waiting online at midday on Monday a couple of weeks ago as the booking went live and managed to get one for the following Sunday. 3 of us went ‘All In’ on the roast; £22 per person gets you 55 day aged beef rump, 28 day aged lamb leg, and 21 day aged pork loin, plus Yorkshire puddings, duck fat roast potatoes, seasonal veg, and gravy. It really is as good as everyone says. I’d say it’s the closest thing to cooking a roast at home yourself. Usually restaurant roasts fall victim of hard, pre-cooked yorkshires, and potatoes that have that warmed up taste to them, but this was all spot on. I’m not sure how much pre cooking is done here, but with roasts flying out every second then I’d expect they have Yorkshire puddings cooking every 20 minutes. I’m not sure, but whatever they are doing sets them above the rest. The meat is great too, and the gravy is the cherry on the cake that enhances it all. But id expect no less from meat specialists. There was no cheesecake though 😢, 1:30 and they had already run out. But it was their 2nd weekend and they are still finding their feet, I guess I’ll just have to go back. . . . . . #blacklock #sundayroast #sundayroasts #sundaydinner #roastdinner #roastbeef #roastpork #roastlamb #porkloin #yorkshirepudding #roastpotatoes #london #londonfood #londoneats #londonist #londonlife #londonist #londonrestaurants #londonrestaurant #coventgarden #londonfoodblogger (at Blacklock) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cae21ldogCT/?utm_medium=tumblr
