On March 2, 1955, Claudette Colvin refused to give up her seat to a white woman on a city bus in Montgomery, Alabama.
As police officers dragged her from the bus, she shouted again, and again, “It’s my constitutional right.” She was jailed and charged with violating segregation laws, disturbing the peace and assaulting a police officer. She pleaded not guilty, but was convicted.
Colvin’s act of protest happened 9 months before Rosa Parks famously sparked the Montgomery Bus Boycotts, but Colvin’s age and lack of experience in the civil rights movement rendered her act of bravery and defiance all but forgotten in the telling of civil-rights history.

Black History is American History!!!! Black History is World History!!! Happy Black History Month! ...... This month we celebrate those Pioneers and Dreamers who paved the way for us. There are so many known and unknown heros who have contributed to our rich history. A history that connects us across the diaspora spanning multiple generations, and in a variety of disciplines. Our history continues to inspire, empower, and shift perspective. Today and everyday we reflect on Black History. Black Present. Black Future. Three years ago we made history by becoming the First Black Woman Owned and Operated venue in the city of Atlanta. Thank you for all your love and support. We celebrate our anniversary this month as well. What will be your legacy? Are you writing your place in the history books? #Iamblackhistory #blackhistorymonth #blackhistoryeveryday #atlvenue #atleventspace #blackownedvenue #atlblackownedvenue #BlackHistory2023 #February #HappyBlackHistoryMonth #bhm #blackhistory #blackhistorymonth2023 #blackhistory365 #Celebrate #BlackHistoryMatters #BlackHistoryIsAmericanHistory #becauseofthemwecan #blackexcellence #trailblazer #BlackBusiness #Entrepreneur #BlackEntrepreneurs #SupportBlackBusiness #BlackOwned #BuyBlack #BlackLove (at Atlanta, Georgia) https://www.instagram.com/p/CouareeAR9p/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

I needed a break, so I’m sorry if I’m rambling.
So I’m a paraprofessional now. I work specifically with 5th graders. A few weeks ago when the news broke about the five officers that killed Tyre Nichols, they held and assembly where the school’s resource officer spoke to the 4th and 5th grade. I was truly confused because for a lot of them it takes more than a single cop to be like “ I’m not the bad guy.” They have access to social media, they know what the world is like, and the Black students most definitely learned early on how the world will treat them.
I chose not to speak on it to protect my peace. The five officers( and the other two that came out well after the fact still has their jobs) was fired immediately and investigated. Even lost their pension. Which means they can promptly fire, investigate, and arrest crooked cops, they just don’t. You can’t tell me to trust the police, yet they pick and chose which cops to protect for as long as possible and which ones they throw under a burning bus.
The first day of Black History month, we had teachers ask we not mention slavery or the Civil Rights movement because it’s too much for some of the kids. The teachers in questions are associated with the Ku Klux Karens Daughters of the Confederacy. I made it my mission to make them as uncomfortable as humanly possible because they have to walk by the classrooms I’m assigned to and the teachers and I made a periodic table of Black Inventors and Scientists and a “Library of African American Authors” display for the Board of Education visit.
I keep telling myself that I have to be the adult in the situation because the kids need the reassurance. The Monday after the video came out of Tyre’s death, a lot of the kids seemed off. Like they’re talkative, but they were so quiet you could hear a pin drop. And with us moving into the Civil Right’s era in social studies, more questions are bound to be asked. Questions no fifth grader should ask. One question was“ Are people like this still around?” After we got into WWII. Do you lie or tell the truth? Because they see and know a lot more than what most adults are willing to admit. So I said “yes.” But asked why they wanted to know. Turns out they were listening to the news the night before and they mentioned NeoNazis.
You can’t just sit there and be like “ Let’s ban curriculum pertaining to race and gender” and not expect you child to not know what’s going on. They have access to things like YouTube Shorts( which is basically just TikTok’s) or here whatever conversations you and other adults are having.

It's #BlackHistoryMonth and I can't be more excited. It's celebration, remembrance, prayer, reflection and education.
