the eurasian blackcap, also often known simply as the blackcap, is a member of the warbler family found in much of europe, western asia and northwestern africa, and their preferred habitat is mature deciduous woodland. they feed primarily on insects during the breeding season, then switch to a preference for fruit in late summer. as a warbler, they’re often known for their pleasant, melodious song, although some subspecies have simpler tunes than others. both sexes have a distinctive ‘cap’ of feathers that stand out against their primarily gray plumage; males have black caps, while females have reddish-brown caps.

22nd April 2024: Dunnock, Green Woodpecker, views, broad-leaved clover, Blackbird, bluebells, daisies and dandelions and Great Crested Grebes including a chick and the fish in the adult's mouth at Lakeside Country Park and home today.

Great views of Blackcap, Long-tailed Tit, Great Tit, Moorhen, Tufted Ducks, Grey Squirrel and hawthorn, vetch, cuckooflower and loads of buttercups were other highlights today.

Just a quick note to say that I'll be taking a bit of a break from daily posts as I'm off work from Friday with us heading off on an exciting wild trip away next week and with preparation for that and some other great things I've got a busy three evenings to come between now and Friday. I may do a bit a brief round up post of lunch time etc. photos and sightings from the next three days if I get time on Thursday and possibly once or twice in the time off, but if not I shall certainly do a few posts about the next couple of weeks as I get back into daily posting afterwards. Have a good couple of weeks all.

It’s always exciting to see a species for the first time. Blackcaps aren’t rare but this was a first for me

16th May 2024: Recent photos of Carrion Crow at Lossiemouth, New Forest Pony and foal at Stoney Cross, snapdragons out the back, view at Fishlake Meadows, flower in Winchester and sky and flowers on the balcony this evening.

I enjoyed seeing a Roe Deer as I passed Lakeside this morning which was a magical moment, Canada Goose and Moorhen with Cetti's Warbler, Blackcap and beautiful Song Thrush heard at Winnall Moors at lunch time, green alkanet, ivy-leaved toadflax, herb-Robert and irises in Abbey Gardens today.
