Aesthetics Ref - A Bros
Nickname: Xanth (A!Sans)
Height: 4â taller than you (OR 5â3â)
Eye-lights: Sky blue (#87CEEB) with flecks of xanthic yellow (#EEED09)
Magic Specialty: Yellow, cyan, green
Scars/distinguishing marks:Â Frozen open right eye-socket, the black inside replaced with pure yellow magic (usually covered with an eye-patch), loose stardust-clouds of yellow magic also replacing a slash of his throat, a starburst in the middle of his sternum, the middle of both forearms, and a line from the top of his ilium to the top of his femur
Preferred Style: Sporty boho, very freeform, eclectic and organic but with a grounding touch of athletic utility. Heâs a little more willing to show off some bone and less concerned with appearing put together and sensible than he used to be and it comes together into something a little slapdash, a bit casual, but as a whole both comfortable and fun. Tends towards greens and yellows and blues still, but more open to beiges and browns and tans as well.
Outerwear: Occasional cardigans, kimono-style (or similar) shrugs, maybe a light poncho or two tucked away somewhere, but mostly prefers to go without outerwear entirely. Overalls may make an appearance now and then
Top: Graphic tees, athletic tanks, tank tops of just about any kind, but a preference for scoop or square necklines to let his collarbone breathe (âŚwell, as much as it can with his scarf in the way, at least)
Bottom: Basketball shorts, sweatpants, cinch-leg pants, the odd pair of harem pants here and there, loosely fitting and usually torn up jeans
Footwear: Running/walking shoes, sandals (little preference as long as theyâre durable, flipflops need not apply), sometimes boots but practical and the amount of heel is not a concern
Trademark accessory/accessories: Between a few things, his distinctive square eye-patch, his well-loved blue scarf, and his heavily adorned forearmsâwrapped with bandages (to keep the purely magic bits [literally] under wraps) and decorated with a variety of leather and beaded bracelets, some of which have meaning to him and some he just thinks look cool
-
Nickname: Piper (A!Papyrus)
Height: 1â4â taller than you (OR 6â3â)
Eye-lights: None (magic otherwise manifests cerulean blue [#007BA7], with threaded streaks of xanthic yellow [#EEED09])
Magic Specialty: Blue, yellow, cyan
Scars/distinguishing marks: A slice of yellow across his cervical vertebrae, a similarly yellow (skeletal) handprint wrapped around his right humerus
Preferred Style: Candy-colored classic, very into a sleek and sophisticated style, the kind to get you on the cover of a GQ magazine, but unafraid of bright and vibrant color to stand out. Amaranth, turquoise, lavender, and lemon, often paired with black or white for a more dramatic pop, he tends not to spare expenses for quality and has a well-cultivated wardrobe for a variety of classy modern looks.
Outerwear: Blazers, fitted, with the occasional overcoat for fancier (or colder) occasions
Top: Button shirts and sweaters, sometimes worn together and sometimes separately. Cashmere and wool are favorites of his for sweaters, either turtleneck or v-neck with no in-between (he prefers to keep his âslitâ throat covered, but if thatâs not an option heâll bare it as an accessory). Some simple shirts in linen and cotton for warmer weather, as well a few old t-shirts kept for sentimental value that he wears around the house or when he expects he might get dirty
Bottom: Slacks, some pressed, but all slim-fitting to highlight his length of leg
Footwear: Dress shoes and boots, most fond of chukka boots but certainly has a shoe for just about any occasion
Trademark accessory/accessories: Wears a variety of necklaces, mostly layered chains (gold to match his neck), but some with crystal or stone pendants if they happen to coordinate well with his outfit

Choosing a good new mirror
A wall mirror can be a serious asset when you're decorating. Because it reflects light, it helps brighten and widen even the smallest and darkest of rooms to make them more comfortable and inviting. A wall mirror this website can also add a decorative look to your room, and it makes an ideal focal point for your space. The key is choosing the right mirror for your room and the look that you want to create.
The first decision to make when you're choosing a wall mirror is how large it should be. The size of the mirror should be influenced by a couple of factors â the size of the wall that you're placing it on and how big an impact you want the mirror to make in your room. If you're hanging the mirror on a large wall in your living room, dining room or bedroom and you want to make a bold statement, opt for an extra large mirror, measuring between 25 and 31 inches on each side. If you're using the mirror as an accent on a small wall near your entryway, you may need one as small as 10 inches on each side. Measure your wall so you know how much space you have to work with and determine how much of it you want the mirror to fill.
While square and rectangular options are usually the most common, you can find wall mirrors in a variety of shapes. A square or rectangular mirror offers the most traditional look, but choosing a mirror in an unusual shape can bring attention to a wall even if the mirror is small or lacks a decorative frame. For a simple but striking look, opt for a circular or oval wall mirror. Funky triangle- and diamond-shaped mirrors can add a quirky touch to a room. If you want to make a big design statement, however, go with a bold starburst-shaped mirror that is sure to draw the eye.
Some wall mirrors don't have frames â it's their size or shape that gives them a strong presence in your room. When you're shopping for a mirror, however, you can also opt for a style with a frame that packs a decorative punch all its own. Choose a simple wooden, metal or plastic frame for a sleek, streamlined look. For a more formal, dramatic look, seek out a mirror with an ornate, gilded frame to serve as a strong focal point for your room. You can also find wall mirrors with mosaic-style frames that feature bits of tile for a fun, eye-catching look.
If you decide on a mirror with a decorative mirror frame, choose an option in a color that works with the rest of the room's decor. A basic black, white or wood tone frame can coordinate with virtually any decorating scheme. Gilded metals like gold or silver add a posh look that fits formal or modern decor well. If you're choosing a wall mirror with a colored frame, think about how the frame's color plays against your wall shade and aim to create a contrast that draws attention to the mirror. You can simply choose a frame in a color that's much darker or lighter than the wall, or opt for a colored frame with a different undertone than the wall shade to create a natural contrast.

Itâs not often that you find a hotel where each room is personally decorated- usually, theyâre done in standard hotel-type furniture. Not so, this hotel in East Hampton, UK. The Swedish-born owner has used Scandinavian elements to decorate his hotel. The interior has cheerful colors and a combination of styles.
Thereâs a lot of good inspiration here. Painted gray/green kitchen cabinetry is âinâ right now, and I love how black looks with it.Â
The sunroom is a colorful play of patterns against a black wall with arctic white trim.
Bright blue walls and a fuchsia settee invites guests to linger in front of a glass-tiled fireplace.
A mosaic of patterned fabric replaces a traditional headboard and a cobalt-blue fabric with cheery yellow lemonsâcovers a settee. Thereâs a bedroom decorated to suit every taste in this hotel.
The Carl von LinnĂŠ room, named for the famed Swedish botanist who laid the foundations for modern taxonomyâis a naturalistâs dream, with a serene woodland color scheme with the feel of sleeping outdoors.
Scientific illustrations adorn the walls, and dried specimens of plants line the shelves above a worn wood desk.
The room of Norwegian ice-skating champion Sonja Henie has a Hollywood Regency vibe, thanks to a starburst mirror, velvet bed linens, and a tufted leather headboard.
Icy pink and gray tones are the hallmark of the Sonja Henie room. This would be the room I would pick- I love old movies starring Sonja Henie.
Lace-embellished wallpaper creates an ideal backdrop for shelving that mirrors the look of floating doilies.
Inspired by the Norwegian explorer Thor Heyerdahl's expedition to Polynesia, this room features a headboard that resembles his sail-powered raft and wallpaper in a stylized palm-leaf motif.
Natural elements, such as such light fixtures made from shells and a raw wood stool in the bathroom, loosely follow the suite's Polynesian theme. Interesting patchwork quilt tile pattern.Â
On the other end of the spectrum, the Edvard Munch room is moody and medievalâa fitting tribute to the expressionist painter behind The Scream.
A deep-hued vignette comprises a stately dome chair upholstered in high-drama crocodile skin, a bronze pharmacy lamp, and a marble-top side table.
Each bathroom is outfitted with a marble vanity and a stately claw-foot tub. This one also has classic black & white floor tiles and bright wallpaper that really makes it pop.
This room features streamlined furnishings and mod striped walls.
Among the room's clean-lined wood pieces: a chair tucked into a corner and a bath stool by the sauna-like tub.
Bright patterned textiles, and antique rag rugs, plus colorful books brighten up a covered porch painted deep gray. Which room is your favorite?

Trinkets, Rings, 3: Enough rings and bands to wear three on every finger and toe while still having dozens to spare. Rings, especially magic rings are a very common item of jewelry in fiction and roleplaying. From a basic ring of protection, to the life saving ring of regeneration, the ring of the Nibelungs, the rings of the lantern corps, the ring of Gyges, any wedding ring ever depicted, the ring of Solomon, Sir Percevalâs ring, Aladdinâs genie housing ring, the nine rings of mortal men and the precious one ring of power, these small circular pieces of gems, metal, wood or bone always add more to the story than the sum of their parts. None of these rings are intensely magical in their own right but can serve as basis for a magical or plot relevant ring. When a DM rolls a d100, the bog standard ring of protection +1 they were going to give out now has a unique look and personality rather than just a mechanical benefit.
A big heavy ring made of sterling silver. On the face of the ring is a skull the size of a large manâs thumb, run through with a lance and a flag fluttering around it. Knowledgeable PCâs will recognize the sigil as that of the Mad Lancerâs an infamous cavalry unit that was a force of nature as much as a military company.
An onyx ring set with a shimmering opal, from which a thin line of black smoke continuously billows forth.
A shinning brass signet ring that proudly displays a raised fist against a red starburst. Knowledge PC's will recognize the sigil as the symbol of a paladin order known as the Boros Legion. There's a weight to it that belies its size, a weight of strength and of pride.
A cheap-looking tin ring that has a small dial adorned with letters of the alphabet that can be aligned with various strange pictographs. Knowledgeable PC's will recognize it as a decoder ring and can be used to decipher texts that were written using this specific ring or a twin of it.
A ring comprised of two interlocking bands, one gold engraved with a motifs of laughing faces and the other granite with a motif of faces set in stony silence.
A lead ring bearing engravings of an otherworldly entity spreading its unnatural gifts.
Ring of Fire Detection: A pure white ring set with a transparent red gemstone. The gemstone will light up and emit a piercing sound if the ring comes into direct contact with fire, magical or otherwise.
A simple black ring is polished to a shine, and written in gold lettering around the outer band is the phrase "I am better off healed than I ever was unbroken."
A crudely made gold ring set with a huge green gemstone that glows faintly even in full daylight.
An iron ring set with a dark ruby of great size and splendor. Within its heart flickers a mysterious flame, entrapped there in ages past by a masterful mage.
âKeep reading for 90 more trinkets.
âNote: The previous 10 items are repeated for easier rolling on a d100.

An iron ring set with a dark ruby of great size and splendor. Within its heart flickers a mysterious flame, entrapped there in ages past by a masterful mage.
A thin ring made of two intertwining strands of silver and gold, both ornate and simple in appearance.
A silver ring in the shape of a spider whose legs clasp around the wearerâs finger and whose body is a yellowish gem.
An unassuming copper ring clean and shiny like a new penny, it has dozens of smiling faces faintly carved into its surface.
A silver ring with golden ram's horns curling around the edge of its crown.
A bog iron ring with a poem in Druidic on the inside.
An onyx ring. When tapped three times, a faint blue light shows the symbol of an assassinâs guild.
A pair of black iron body piercing rings, with a chain linking them.
A copper ring with a small clear gem that shimmers slightly even in the dark. It is badly crafted with scuffs and scratches along the loop and yet there is something quaint about it that suggests more value than the first impression would suggest.
A silver banded ring with a single white gem encased in the center. Etched into the surface are ancient glyphs, binding its power to an individual to be used as a focus. The head of the ring is a flat surface which is adorned with an intricate ritualistic circle design.
A lavender ring with a cosmic gemstone faceted into it. The gem moves and glows like outer space, and has a spiral vortex pattern along its edges.
An iron signet ring whose symbol can be changed once per day by the bearer. The image must be something the bearer has seen and remembers clearly.
A crystalline ring in the shape of a dragon, that changes based on the bearerâs emotional state.
A gold ring whose Randomly Colored gemstone levitates just out of the socket, following wherever the ring goes.
A platinum ring that has a large blue sapphire embedded in the band. When the bearer looks into the stone, he can see a perfect reflection of himself that appears to have a life all of its own. Engraved on the inside of the band one can see a message that reads; "Never lose sight of your true self".
A single human tooth encased in a brass ring, inscribed with a twin-tailed comet. Knowledge PCâs will recognize it as a holy reliquary of a relatively famous prophet and devout follower of the God of the Outer Stars.
An oxidized copper ring etched with ancient hieroglyphs that tell a timeless fable.
A brass ring set with an oversized, round brown bezoar for a gemstone. Extremely ugly, by modern standards.
A heavy silver ring with a flat, round head. A cap lifts off the top, revealing a folded-down needle, which may be lifted into place, and the markings of a sundial around it. None of the marks, all twiggy, natural shapes, correspond to modern notation, save the fact there are 12.
A ruby ring, heavy, plain, and gold, set with a fat, badly cut ruby that's entirely stuck on a finger bone. In modern times, it would be a manâs thumb ring, though an ugly one. The band surrounds a thick finger bone and wonât come off (But could be chiseled out) as the knuckles are knobby and too wide. The bone is fragile with age, and conspicuously blackened.
A signet ring, quite wide, made of cast iron. The signet face is that of a beaked skull, one halfway between that of a human and a crow. The ring is too wide for a human to wear and seems to have been designed for a finger twice that size.
A horrific black ring that turns translucent when submerged in a water and uncoils into a slippery, leech-like tentacle when unworn.
A wide, red brass ring, that's plain, on the exterior. There is lettering inside the band, raised and sharp. If worn on a clenched fist, the lettering digs painfully into its finger, leaving the word "memento" imprinted in red welts.
A mithral ring, engraved with a pattern of rolling waves that encircles the entire band. The ring is immune to rust, both from natural oxidation and rust caused by magical effects.
A steel ring that carries the sign of an armorersâ guild: a stylized helmet with visor, two crossed swords and the rune âAâ engraved beneath them.
A lapis colored gemstone embedded into a ring that is stylized with the alchemical symbol of a circle inside a square, inside a triangle, inside another circle.
A mysterious ring; ancient, covered in runes. After spending some minutes sniffing, touching, and examining the thing, the bearer can safely say it exudes an aura of magic. When worn is makes the bearer's hairs stand on end and sparks jump between the metal and his fingers.
A ring carved from a single solid gemstone that glows with an inner light and pulses with its wielderâs heartbeat.
A simple pale stone that sits atop a plain steel band, flickering every so often with unknown power.
A simple gold band studded with blue diamonds. Knowledgeable PCâs will recognize it as a ring of office for the Grand Vizier, the highest advisor to a great rajah.
Ring of Bubbles: A delicate ring made of multicolored glass. When this ring is held between two fingers and dipped it into a solution of soap and water, a creature can blow through it to produce dozens of fist sized, glowing, technicolor bubbles which are difficult to pop and last for up to a minute.
Ring of the Firebuilder: A ring made of worked flint. When struck with a piece of steel, it sheds sparks that are able to ignite objects as normal. The sparks created from the ring never harm the bearer, who gains Advantage on igniting objects with the ring.
A ring crafted of simple silver. The band is etched with different letters from all languages of the realms, some unrecognizable to any living person.
A thickly banded ring made of black steel. It sits heavy on the bearer's finger never feeling fully comfortable.
A sapphire banded in gold with a loop of string around it to go around the bearer's neck. The inside of the gem appears to be filled with flowing water that swirls and sloshes magnificently inside the sapphire.
A pewter ring with an inlaid gold band that slowly rotates.
A band of tarnished silver bearing no ornament or inscription, but is icy cold to the touch. The patches of dark corrosion on the ring subtly move and change. This never occurs while anyone observes the ring, but happens constantly.
A gold ring shaped in the form of a manacle, uncomfortably tight regardless of how it's worn.
A brass band in the shape of a dragonâs claw, scuffed and tarnished with age and frequent use.
A ring made from woven lead and silver.
A brass ring, set with rubies and engraved with fire runes, holds a lens of orange-red crystal that has an esoteric circle lightly etched in the glass.
A ring of silver green mithril engraved with runes from the enchantment school of magic. Though plain looking, the edges of the band are decorated with an intricate design of miniaturized knotwork.
An oversized ancient golden ring bears the silver hawk crest of the Yragerne family line on its large flat top.
An ornate golden ring set with a perfect square-cut emerald. A noble insignia on both sides of the gem features two eagles flying in opposite directions.
A platinum ring in the shape of a coiled snake. Its eyes are two perfectly cut rubies. The ring has a mesmerizing aura that attracts the eyes of the greedy and the vain. Only a person with clear desires and unclouded wants is unaffected by its allure.
A dwarven-forged amethyst ring bearing the inscription âCracked from the hammer of the Forge-Fatherâ
A garnet ring that causes the bearerâs hand to appear to be clawed and demonic.
A signet ring that will magically re-size itself to fit the wearer, but only if the wearer is a direct descendant of the creator of the ring.
A rose gold ring that, when put on, periodically gives the wearer the distinct feeling that he or she is forgetting something important.
A platinum ring set with an opal cracked in a star pattern, like a tiny sun when the light passes through it.
A simple black ring polished to a shine, and written in gold lettering around the outer band is the phrase "Three things cannot be long hidden: the Sun, the Moon, and the Truth.
A bizarre looking ring that could easily be mistaken for a piece of forest debris. Its thorn covered surface throbs with the sensation of a beating heart when placed on the left ring finger.
Sphinx Ring: A small band with a little head of a lion, made of limestone. By stroking the band while worn, the lion whispers a riddle based on events which its bearer has witnessed, and the riddles can vary widely in difficulty, from simple riddles to questions only previous bearers could logically answer. If the answer is correct, the ring purrs, while if incorrect, it roars. It is mostly used to pass the time during long travels, but nobles have been known to use them in party games.
A transparent ring of blue-green resin that smells of strange magical forests. The band is slick to the touch, but never slips off of a finger accidentally.
An unassuming bronze ring that seems less than spectacular in every way and boasts no gems to speak of on its surface. However, within the band lies a diamond pressing softly against the bearer's skin.
A rusty iron ring that appears to show a dusty landscape within it, changing as itâs moved. The finger the ring is worn on always feels warm and dry.
A sealing ring, with the image of a smiling, winking imp.
A band carved from a single chunk of raw amethyst, capped with a black pearl in a truesilver setting. In darkness, the ring glows with a faint purple hue.
A ring whose outer edge has six flat edges, so that it presents a hexagonal appearance. One of the sides bears a setting carved of obsidian, topped by a small black diamond
A ring that is more like a wrap designed to completely encase the bearerâs finger. It is formed of what appears to be a thin sheet of platinum laced with spidery gold webbing. Once slid over a finger, the covering becomes as flexible as cloth and stays in place until the bearer removes it.
A ring consisting of a truesilver core surrounded by a torus of azure ice coated in a slick sheen, as though in the process of melting. The ring is cold to the touch and though the ice remains slippery, it never melts and the ring is never in danger of slipping off the finger unexpectedly.
A ring crafted from pure white gold encrusted with speck- sized fragments of diamond. When held to the light, it produces a prismatic effect, sparkling and gleaming with all the colors of the rainbow.
A ring made entirely of silver, intricately carved in fine patterns. Four small opals are set into the surface at regular intervals. When the ring is worn, they slowly orbit the finger without ever leaving the band.
A black ring made from a single piece of obsidian and bears a gold inlay design of chains.
A ring made up of filaments of bone and black iron of various thicknesses, twisted together in a strange mottled composite. Â
A ring carved from moonstone in the shape of a miniature, cable-twisted torc. The end-caps of the "torc" rest where a signet would be, each mounting a tiny, curved feline claw cast from silver.
A signet ring made of heavy lead with a distinctively abnormal design carved into it.
A brass ring encasing a small, polished moldavite.
A silver ring made out of very fine wire worked into rather complicated decorative ornament.
An ornate brass signet ring with a coiled serpent design with two freshwater pearls for eyes. The ring has a poison pill compartment that is currently empty.
A small copper ring, inset with flawed pearls.
A ring made out of blond hair and porcelain braided together. Wearing it slowly causes the bearer to experience apathy towards everything.
A mysterious bronze ring, ancient and marked with eldritch signs.
A pewter ring in the shape of a crab with its claws pressed to its body and the legs forming the ring. The shell, claws, and legs of the crab are set with polished abalone and the eyes are tiny garnets.
An adamantine ring is set with a cabochon cut water opal.
A platinum ring set with a large diamond surrounded by a circle of smaller sapphires and rubies. The gems gleam brightly in even the dullest light. An inscription on the inside of the band reads simply âfor Aleneaâ in Elven.
A larger than average ring that looks like sheets of gold woven together into a simple pattern. Despite its size, ring feels almost weightless. On the inside of the ring there is an engraved; "A.Z."
A silver ring encrusted with dark gems. Upon inspection the ring itself smells of earth, mud and worms.
A brass ring that is crudely constructed with dent marks and battle burns.
A lapis colored gemstone embedded into a ring that is stylized with the alchemical symbol of a circle inside a square, inside a triangle, inside another circle.
A simple bronze ring sized for a giant's finger.
A plain-looking wooden ring with no characteristic marks or engravings. It almost looks as though the carpenter who fashioned it never got around to finishing it.
A copper ring shaped like knotted brambles.
A copper ring shaped like a dragon clutching its own tail, holding a moonstone it its mouth.
A petrified stone fist wearing a golden ring. It is impossible to remove the ring without destroying the fist.
A silver ring shaped like rolled arrow.
A bone ring with a deep purple inlay, set with an onyx.
An emerald ring that gives the bearer an abnormally strong sense of balance. The bearer is rendered immune from mundane vertigo effects such as dizziness from heights or seasickness.
A black stone ring made for the middle finger of a man's hand. The band is carved in the shape of a vine with thorns.
An iron band flecked with onyx pieces and is always cold to the touch.
A rough-hewn silver band with a single purple stone inset. No matter how long it is held, it is cold to the touch. While worn, the bearer occasionally hears strange dissonant whispers in Deep Speech promising power and domination over others.

Henri Matisse and the nun: Why did the artist create a masterpiece for Sister Jacques-Marie?
Henri Matisseâs greatest masterpiece resides not in a gallery, but on a peaceful hillside near Nice: a chapel he designed in gratitude to the nun who helped him through a troubled convalescence.
Famous as a great colourist, towards the end of his life, the artist Henri Matisse moved from painting towards a new art form: cut-outs. He likened the process to sculpture â âcarvingâ into colour â as he sliced into huge sheets of vividly painted paper before pinning the shapes in place on a canvas. This novel approach â which produced some of the most recognisable pieces of art from the 20th century, such as his Blue Nudes, Icarus and The Snail â is being celebrated in a major new exhibition at Tate Modern, in conjunction with New Yorkâs Museum of Modern Art.
Yet it wasnât any of those works that Matisse himself termed his âmasterpieceâ: that honour he bestowed on the Rosaire Chapel in Vence, in the south of France. He worked on it for four years, from 1947 to 1951, designing the building, the stunning stained-glass windows, the tiles with monochrome religious imagery on the walls, even the zany chasubles (vestments) the priests wear. Still a place of active worship for Dominican nuns today, it was an ambitious challenge for Matisse, who was no architect, and was very unwell at the time â and he considered it âthe achievement of an entire lifeâs work, the outcome of tremendous, difficult, sincere workâ.
It might have been the pinnacle of his career, but the Vence Chapel was also a way for Matisse to use his talents to produce a heartfelt gift for a Dominican nun named Sister Jacques-Marie.
As a young woman and student nurse, then going by the name of Monique Bourgeois, she had cared for Matisse after a gruesomely botched operation for intestinal cancer in 1941, from which he was never to fully recover. Yet it was being confined to his bed as a physical invalid that in part led to his new cut-out technique â and he would never forget the kindness of his nurse.
He immortalised her in several paintings at the time, and their friendship endured â although she later quashed rumours that their affection might have strayed into the romantic, saying in an interview in Paris Match in 1992: âI never really noticed whether he was in love with me⌠I was a little like his granddaughter or his muse.â
Some years after nursing Matisse, in 1946, Bourgeois wrote to him to say she was becoming a nun. The Dominican sisters settled in Vence â coincidentally, very close to Villa Le RĂŞve, where Matisse was living. In one of their many conversations, she mentioned to Matisse her desire for a chapel for the sisters on this pretty hillside. Initially, the artist offered to help design the windows, but soon he was involved in the whole building, right down to the candlesticks (modelled to look like long-stemmed anemone flowers). He worked alongside Brother Rayssiguier, who oversaw the construction of the chapel and was far-sightedly enthusiastic about getting such a well-known artist involved. Rayssiguier thought a splash of modern art might help bring the churchâs appeal up to date.
Matisse, however, was less concerned with the revival of Christian art than with a personal sense of the spiritual â and the creative challenge such a building would present to him. âHe wasnât religious â he was raised Catholic but was not practising,â explains Flavia Frigeri, assistant curator of the Tate show, which features sketches, maquettes and photographs from the Vence Chapel. It was more the chance to create a whole building, she suggests, than any particular Catholic calling.
However, the chapel has been a place of worship since it was unveiled in 1951, and â although modest and small â it is charged with a serene beauty that can be spiritually affecting to not only the nuns who pray there today, but to visiting art lovers and tourists. Even stepping foot inside in January, as I did, with a weak sunlight coming through his gorgeous âTree of Lifeâ stained-glass window, you feel enveloped in pure colour that is both revivifying and calming. The vibrant hues â âultramarine blue, bottle green, lemon yellowâ, to use Matisseâs labels â are reflected in and dappled across the polished pale marble floor and white walls. His imagery, though typically abstract, draws inspiration from the natural world, making it emotionally accessible to all, not just those steeped in scripture.
âThe spiritual expression of their colour strikes me as unquestionable,â wrote Matisse of his leaf patterns in 1951. âSimple colours can affect innermost feelings, their impact being all the more forceful through their simplicity. Blue⌠affects feeling like a vigorous stroke of a gong.â
The Vence Chapel stands apart from archetypal Catholic iconography â even the images of Christ are abstracted into pure line, while an image of the Virgin Mary and child comes surrounded by almost hippyish flowers. Itâs a far cry from the gruesomely realistic emaciated crucifixion imagery often associated with Catholicism. Yet Sister Marie-Pierre, a Dominican nun, echoes Matisseâs sentiments when I ask how it feels to worship in the chapel. In broken English, a thick French accent and a beaming smile as radiant as the buttercup-yellow light filling the room, she says: âWe worship in beauty, instead of in bad things. It feels special. And I think it is better to pray in beauty.â
She leads us through the 14 images that make up âStations of the Crossâ, a series of rather furious-looking paintings on the back wall, which are complemented by enormous but simple outlines of Saint Dominic and the Virgin and Child on two other walls. The latter, Matisse wrote, âhave a tranquil reverent nature all their ownâ while the âStations of the Crossâ are âtempestuousâ. All three were painted in bold, sweeping black on white enamelled terracotta tiles.
The process wasnât simple, however. In those four years of preparing the chapel, Matisse would practise his designs on paper, over and over again. From initial early studies of religious art by Rubens, DĂźrer and Mantegna, he developed his own iconography. âThere were many images as he worked it out; he simplified, intensified, condensed,â suggests Nick Cullinan, co-curator of the Tate show alongside Nicholas Serota. And Matisseâs pious muse, Sister Jacques-Marie, continued to discuss the different designs with him, their affectionate friendship allowing her to be free with her opinions; Matisse later described the chapel as their âshared projectâ.
The images he worked on were several metres tall, and required fluid, long lines drawn in one smooth motion, so Matisse would practise using a charcoal stick at the end of a bamboo wand about two metres long, allowing him to reach. In his seventies while working on the chapel, and unable to stand for any length of time, this long âwandâ had the added advantage of letting him practise from a chair or in bed. He was known to even paint on the ceiling if he woke up, restless, in the middle of the night.
And so it was that the chapel came to life around him. Matisse was now working in his apartment in the grand old Hotel Regina, in nearby Nice. Long rolls of paper cascaded down the walls for him to paint and draw on with his k stick, while he perfected the stained-glass windows using his cut-out technique: snipping out the brightly coloured plant shapes and pinning them to his walls. Photographs reveal how the artist even mocked up an altar in the middle of his room, using boxes, chairs and a table. He spent nearly two years in this work-in-progress world, inside his studio, inside his apartment; âHe really lived in it,â says Frigeri.
Eventually, Matisse had practised the outline of his figures so often, he was able to draw them blindfolded. Appropriately, the artistic experience became almost divine: he commented that all the studies âenable the painter to give free reign to his subconscious⌠after a certain point, it is no longer up to me, it is a revelation: all I do is give myself up.â
And so by April 1949, Matisse was ready to paint on to the tiles which would be mounted on the chapelâs walls. He did not sign the works â they were to be viewed as integral parts of a religious building, not as collectible pieces. âThey were not designs, but signs â to help praying,â says Sister Marie-Pierre. Matisse was, she insists, quite adamant that the Vence Chapel should ânever become a museumâ.
Matisse kept his hand in even until the final finishing touches: he designed the pews and altar, set at a jaunty angle and made of pierre de Rogne stone he specially selected because its pale-brown grain made it look like âa piece of breadâ, according to Sister Marie-Pierre. Most fun, however, are the chasubles that the priests still wear â Matisse made several designs for different Holy Days. Some are gloriously bonkers, with bold patterns â very much in his late style, mimicking the cut-outs in cloth â of flowers, leaves and starbursts, as well as abstracted crosses and crowns of thorns. The eye-popping colour schemes throw together lime, yellow and black or lilac, green and rose, and would look as at home on the cover of Sgt Pepperâs as swishing through the Vence Chapel. They were hailed by Picasso as the best bit of the whole project.
The chapel was consecrated on 25 June 1951; thousands of locals and visitors turned up, but sadly Matisse was too unwell to attend. The chapel soon attracted great international attention. Matisseâs cut-outs had not always been viewed in a positive light by the art establishment â there was a sniffy sense, initially, that they were inferior to paintings, suitable for magazine covers but not for art galleries. But the chapel was recognised immediately as a significant work: âWith the cut-outs, people express misgivings, that the old manâs past his best; but the stained glass â thatâs fine, thatâs well-received,â explains Cullinan. Time, Paris Match, and Vogue all reported on the chapel with delight, the latter dubbing it a âChurch Full of Joyâ.
Itâs an apt phrase for the building. But the chapel also had a significant impact on the final years of Matisseâs artistic career: his subsequent cut-outs, until his death in 1954, went super-sized, growing to a scale similar to his preparations for the chapel, taking over whole walls. And for Matisse, there can be no doubt about the importance of the chapel: although unable to be there at its unveiling, he sent along a written statement. It read: âThis work⌠is the result of all my active life. Despite all its imperfections I consider it as my masterpiece.â
Born in 1869, Matisse qualified in law before studying art in Paris. As a painter, he was influenced by Impressionism, before developing his own style â using brilliant swathes of colour â that was dubbed Fauvism. He later also experimented in Cubism.
The cut-outs were a major development towards the end of his life. They began for practical reasons: with commissions for the Ballet Russes in 1939 and for the covers of magazines such as the art and literature review âVerveâ. These were followed by an artistâs book, 'Jazzâ, featuring the well-known image of Icarus in 1947.
To make the cut-outs, Matisse had his assistants paint sheets of paper in bold, luminous colours; using large shearing scissors, he would cut into the sheets and pin the cut-out shapes first to his walls to perfect the look, and then permanently to canvas.
The technique prompted renewed interest in the human form; but as well as a solidity and stillness, the technique also offered a sense of vivacity and movement.
Matisse was prolific in his final years, despite ill health, and the cut-outs grew in scale. 'The Snailâ, one of the most famous, epitomises his large-scale, bright, abstract approach.
Matisse also used them as trial-run maquettes for large-scale ceramic commissions. In 1952, Sidney and Frances Lasker Brody asked him to create an outdoor tiled mural for their LA house â it took him four attempts to satisfy them, the final result being 'The Sheafâ, which features his favourite wobbly-leaf designs seen in Vence.
The cut-outs were initially met with dismissive bemusement, seen more as decorative than fine art; but by the late 1950s, the art world had recognised them as significant achievements, and Matisseâs bold use of colour and shape has influenced everything from abstract art to fashion to graphic design ever since.

She doesnât like candy all that much, but she probably takes a dumdum when she can.
--
Min He would dress as a witch, with a nice long, black gown and a pointy hat. She likes costumes that make use of her long hair, so she probably could also go as a banshee!
She likes the popcorn balls, though she crushes them up first before eating them.
--
Kaski loves Halloween, if only for the easy candy that the day brings. He doesnât really care about dressing up, but he can be persuaded into ripped zombie gear.
He likes everything sweet, but particularly chocolate bars. He waits until after Halloween to hoard all of the on sale candy.
--
Xinyi has done the white-sheet ghost as a kid, and as an adult, he varies from year to year. Heâll dress as characters from popular horror movies, like Norman Bates!
He loves Halloween candy, and especially tends to snack on skittles.
--
Hiemi will wear all white on Halloween, an oni face mask and so she becomes an Ayakashi for the day. She has the benefit of wearing really cool masks that donât need eye slots, so she likes the reactions that others give her.
Sheâs also not big on candy, but sheâll take jolly ranchers if theyâre available.
--
Go Ro would not dress up, but if someone manages to stick him in a wizard hat or something, he might not remove it.
He likes Red Hot. The hotter the cinnamon, the better!
--

Curious Cuddles
Pairing: Sam x Reader
Word Count: 1087
Warnings: So much fluff, mild sexuality
A/N: This is for @spnkinkbingo and crosses off my Cuddling square. Beware, though, this might give you cavities. This was betaâd by the lovely @impala-dreamer and the link to my entire 2018 SPN Kink Bingo Dirty Drabbles masterlist can be found here. Enjoy!
Down time between hunts was usually mind-numbing. Intense boredom filled with booze and mundane tasks to occupy your brain was the only thing you had to look forward to. Dean was back east cleaning out a small Men of Letters storage house, which left you and Sam, your boyfriend, alone in the bunker. The first few days were spent christening every room in the bunker several times, but you both eventually drifted towards your own hobbies, leaving Sam in his room reading and you in the library playing on your laptop.
After your twentieth game of solitaire, you leaned back in the seat and groaned, rubbing your sore and strained eyes. Unsure if it was the sleep deprivation or just sheer curiosity, an idea popped in your head. You opened up Google and typed your own name, wanting to see if there was any news stories about your suspected death or any crimes you were possibly linked to.
The only story that came up was a two-decade old article from a science fair you won in your hometown. Braces and bangs was not a flattering look on you, and you quickly closed the article with a shudder. Deanâs name went in next, and didnât pull anything up aside from the news reports of him dying, which was ditto for Samâs when you typed his name. Throwing one last Hail Mary, you typed in âSam and Deanâ and clicked search.
The results exploded in your face.
The first link was to Amazon, advertising a series of books named Supernatural by a man named Carver Edlund. There were several other links following that, including fan sites, information about conventions, and even artwork. After procuring one of your fake credit cards, you bought the entire series of books, loaded them on your tablet, and dove in.
Days came and went, and aside from sharing meals with Sam and using the bathroom, your nose was pressed against the screen of the tablet. At first, you assumed these were fictional stories, but the further you read, the more you recognized. You had known some details about the Winchesterâs past, but seeing their entire lives mapped out in black and white? It was jarring.
Once the published books ended when Dean went to Hell, you were able to locate unpublished works from the author after a bit of Googling. Those stories ended about a year before you met the brothers, but you had read enough. Their lives were some of the toughest youâd ever read about, and it amazed you how they were still such a close family after all the heartbreak and betrayal they had faced. It also shocked you how they were so willing to let you into their family when you first met them.
Stopping momentarily at the couch in the library for something, you marched down the hallway and into your shared room with Sam, making him look up when the door opened.
âHey baby,â Sam smiled, but when you didnât stop walking toward him, he raised a brow. âWhat are you-â
Holding the soft threadbare blanket in front of you, you pounced, wrapping your arms around Sam and tackling him onto the bed. Your legs immediately wrapped around his waist and you nuzzled your face into where you assumed his chest was. He wiggled slightly and huffed, and you only squeezed tighter.
âNot that I donât appreciate your cuddles,â Samâs voice was muffled by the blanket, âbut are you okay?â
âI am so sorry, baby, about everything youâve went through in your life,â you murmured. âI⌠I read the Supernatural books.â
Sam stiffened at your confession and you felt him take a deep breath. When he didnât speak right away, you moved your hand in front of you to make sure he was still breathing, satisfied at the thumping of his heart and the movement of his chest under your palm.
âDo you want to talk about it?â Sam asked, managing to wiggle his hands free and wrap them around your waist.
âCan⌠can I just hold you for a few minutes? Has anyone ever just held you? I mean, besides Dean in one of the many instances youâve died in his arms,â you narrowed your eyes at the lump of blanket where you assumed Samâs eyes were, âwhich by the way, is far too many.â
Sam laughed and pulled you closer to him, shifting so he could tuck your body against his chest, making it feel like he was protecting you from the outside world. You always felt safe in Samâs arms, and this time was no different, but you playfully growled at him when he settled.
âHey, Iâm supposed to be cuddling you, Sam,â you snarked wiggling your butt and trying to break his iron hold on you. The hunter was strong, though, and you could barely move an inch.
âDo you mind if I take off the blanket? As much as I love feeling you wiggle against me,â Sam playfully squeezed and rutted against you, âI love looking into your Y/E/C eyes while I hold you even more.â
Your heart fluttered and your cheeks heated up at Samâs words, and you relaxed your hold on him. He leaned back for a moment and pulled the blanket off his head, and you smiled at his mussed hair and squinted eyes. âHi baby.â
âThere she is,â Sam murmured, wrapping a strong arm around your waist and pulling you up the bed so your heads were resting on your respective pillows. He pressed a kiss to your nose and tucked a strand of hair behind your ear.
His eyes never left your own, and you melted into his touch. Sam had a way of looking into your eyes that made you feel weak in the knees and want to do anything for him. Those starburst hazel eyes saw straight through to your soul, and you could only see the love he has for you reflected back.
With a bashful smile, you buried your nose into his chest wiggled closer to him, feeling the warmth from his body and arms around you seep deep into your bones. Nothing could compare to how you felt in Samâs arms, and you immediately relaxed.
Samâs voice broke the silence a few minutes later. âSo where should I start?â
âDid your dad really give you a forty-five when you were afraid as a kid?â
âYeah,â Sam chuckled, âbut you should have seen the machete he got me when I turned five.â
