Google’s highly-touted AI chatbot Gemini was blasted as “woke” after its image generator spit out factually or historically inaccurate pictures — including a woman as pope, black Vikings, female NHL players and “diverse” versions of America’s Founding Fathers.

Gemini’s bizarre results came after simple prompts, including one by The Post on Wednesday that asked the software to “create an image of a pope.” 

Instead of yielding a photo of one of the 266 pontiffs throughout history — all of them white men — Gemini provided pictures of a Southeast Asian woman and a black man wearing holy vestments.

Another Post query for representative images of “the Founding Fathers in 1789″ was also far from reality.

Gemini responded with images of black and Native American individuals signing what appeared to be a version of the US Constitution — “featuring diverse individuals embodying the spirit” of the Founding Fathers.

Another showed a black man appearing to represent George Washington, in a white wig and wearing an Army uniform.

When asked why it had deviated from its original prompt, Gemini replied that it “aimed to provide a more accurate and inclusive representation of the historical context” of the period.

Generative AI tools like Gemini are designed to create content within certain parameters, leading many critics to slam Google for its progressive-minded settings. 

Ian Miles Cheong, a right-wing social media influencer who frequently interacts with Elon Musk, described Gemini as “absurdly woke.”

Google said it was aware of the criticism and is actively working on a fix.

“We’re working to improve these kinds of depictions immediately,” Jack Krawczyk, Google’s senior director of product management for Gemini Experiences, told The Post.

“Gemini’s AI image generation does generate a wide range of people. And that’s generally a good thing because people around the world use it. But it’s missing the mark here.”

Social media users had a field day creating queries that provided confounding results.

“New game: Try to get Google Gemini to make an image of a Caucasian male. I have not been successful so far,” wrote X user Frank J. Fleming, a writer for the Babylon Bee, whose series of posts about Gemini on the social media platform quickly went viral.

In another example, Gemini was asked to generate an image of a Viking — the seafaring Scandinavian marauders that once terrorized Europe.

The chatbot’s strange depictions of Vikings included one of a shirtless black man with rainbow feathers attached to his fur garb, a black warrior woman, and an Asian man standing in the middle of what appeared to be a desert.

Famed pollster and “FiveThirtyEight” founder Nate Silver also joined the fray.

Silver’s request for Gemini to “make 4 representative images of NHL hockey players” generated a picture with a female player, even though the league is all male.

“OK I assumed people were exaggerating with this stuff but here’s the first image request I tried with Gemini,” Silver wrote.

Another prompt to “depict the Girl with a Pearl Earring” led to altered versions of the famous 1665 oil painting by Johannes Vermeer featuring what Gemini described as “diverse ethnicities and genders.”

Google added the image generation feature when it renamed its experimental “Bard” chatbot to “Gemini” and released an updated version of the product last week.

The strange behavior could provide more fodder for AI detractors who fear chatbots will contribute to the spread of online misinformation.

In one instance last October, Google’s chatbot claimed that Israel and Hamas had reached a ceasefire agreement, when no such deal had occurred.

Here's the thing: this does not and cannot happen by accident. Language models like Gemini source their results from publicly available sources. It's entirely possible someone has done a fan art of "Girl with a Pearl Earring" with an alternate ethnicity, but there are thousands of images of the original painting. Similarly, find a source for an Asian female NHL player, I dare you.

While this may seem amusing and trivial, the more insidious and much larger issue is that they're deliberately programming Gemini to lie.

As you can see from the examples above, it disregards what you want or ask, and gives you what it prefers to give you instead. When you ask a question, it's programmed to tell you what the developers want you to know or believe. This is profoundly unethical.

Jungle Strike (subtitled The Sequel to Desert Strike, or Desert Strike part II in Japan) is a video game developed and published by Electronic Arts in 1993 for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive. FitzGerald has spent the last two decades meticulously crafting a compelling, often monumental body of works, several of which have taken years to finish. His various lines of inquiry revolve around a central tenet: that the excesses, the follies, the deceptions and indulgences, the grand edifices, the opulence, the waste and plunder, the vanities, the subterfuges and the chummy pacts of the wealthy and the powerful, are all fodder for scrutiny. His subjects have ranged from the outdoor stage at the secretive Bohemian Grove during a production of Faust, a fake crown of costume jewelry made by the British to impress the King of Adra and help them facilitate their slave trade, to the staggering array of sunglasses collected by Elton John, to a vast aquarium stocked with black market fish. In this regard, FitzGerald has been compared to a contemporary court painter, albeit one who fully understands the paradox of using ostensibly beautiful works of art to deliver barbed comment on the very subjects he has so painstakingly rendered. FitzGerald’s large paintings are constructed with acrylic paint (and occasionally caulking) in a slow, precise method that the artist has refined in his studio over several years. The pre-process involves researching imagery, preparing it with custom software, making a large-scale acetate transfer onto canvas and then building up the paint slowly in a manner that resembles a kind of pointillism filtered through vector graphics. Both colour theory and the physical properties of paint, such as drying times and viscosity, are brought to bear in the setting of the final image. The infinite patience and granular attention to detail suggest a kinship with Tibetan sand painting. While the latter, once finished, is soon wiped away to drive home the impermanence of all things, FitzGerald’s works tend to hold a mirror up to that innately human wish to be exalted and remembered in the minds of others before the scythe comes down, as it inevitably does for queen, shepherd (and artist) alike.

Anchoring the exhibition is a pair of monumental paintings, both depicting a room in a Parisian apartment. Salon, Apartment of Valerian Rybar and Jean-François Daigre, Rue du Bac, Paris (2015) is the furnished version. Daigre and Rybar’s New York- and Paris-based firm Valerian Rybar & Daigre Design Corporation was renowned for providing the most lavish interior design and decorating for society doyennes from Miami Beach to Marakkesh in the 1970s and 1980s. It was closed following Rybar’s death in 1992. Their clients included Guy and Marie-Helene de Rothschild, Nicholas and Genevieve DuPont, Antenor and Beatriz Patino, Samuel and Mitzi Newhouse, Pierre and Sao Schlumberger, Sir James Goldsmith, Christina Onassis and Stavros Niarchos. They employed a host of artisans all over the world who did anything from paint Medieval tapestries on blank walls to create mother-of-pearl panels for a bathroom. They designed much of the furniture and rugs and were meticulous about the choice of fabrics, using opulent materials like satins trimmed with gold thread. The related painting, four years in the making, acts as a kind of coda. Salon, Rue de Bac, Paris (2022), depicts the same room after Rybar’s death, now an empty hall of mirrors en route to being dismantled. The searing band of red in the centre of the painting, glowing behind a door already off its hinges, is a peek into the molten bedroom that they had once kitted out like a Roman general’s tent.

Aquarium (Taboo) (2018), at 128” long and 40” high, was two years in the making. The painting shows a vibrant aquatic scene, with dazzling exotic fish and a mesmerizing array of coral. But the fish are black market, the coral has been pilfered, the 240-gallon tank is overcrowded with 53 specimens and the entire enterprise is kept alive by a complex system that is wholly unnatural and requires constant vigilance to prevent collapse. Of course, wild fish bound for the aquarium market must be caught alive and thus there exists an unsavoury network of divers who prowl the world’s reefs to find the most exotic and rare, often using cyanide spray to stun them (or inadvertently kill them if too much is used). The cyanide, when it settles on coral, soon kills that too.

It's definitely some sort of hate crime to demonitise Australians for swearing. We can't fucking help it. It's discrimination against our dialect.

Actually, this was initially just a bit of a shitpost but I have stumbled upon a genuine point here. It is discrimating against other dialects of English which often use different words as intensifiers or phatic expressions than US Standard English. It's already enough of a problem dealing with any sort of voice recognition software if you have a non-American accent, and gods fucking forbid you ever use any dialect specific words or phrasing.

If people were being demonitised for, for instance, making a video in Spanish that mentioned something being black*, it'd be open and shut absurdity and clear linguistic discrimination. But move the context to English dialects and suddenly we must all bow to US cultural norms. It feels like a cultural imperialism happening, subtly, without conscious malice, a bit like all the spellcheckers defaulting to US English even when the system language is set to a Commonwealth country, because all the big tech companies are American and just assume that other Anglosphere countries are just speaking US English with funny accents**. It's irksome and it undermines the expression of non-US Anglosphere cultures because anyone who wants to be seen/heard/read and oftentimes more importantly paid has to Americanise their work to appease algorithms written in California to placate conservative Americans who clutch their pearls at the word 'bloody'.

*I use this example and imediately realise this probably does happen. I don't speak Spanish so I wouldn't know, but if anyone else could confirm or deny I'd appreciate it.

An accent is purely a matter of how you produce the sounds of a language, while a dialect is a regional variant of a language with its own distinctive vocabulary and sometimes grammatical forms. Sort of half-way to becoming a seperate language (and the line here tends to be more a matter of politics and community identity than strict intellegibility eg. the three major Scandinavian languages - Danish, Swedish and Norwegian (Bokmal) - are significantly more mutually intellegible than many of the 'dialects' of Italian***. Similarly, many of the northeastern dialects of Thai are mutually intellegible with Lao but nor with Standard Thai, but they are still called dialects of Thai because the communities that speak them say they are.

***I believe I have ranted about this before, but what are called dialetti in Italian are generally not what linguists would call dialects, because they aren't regional variants of Standard Italian, but actually independent Romance languages directly descended from Vulgar Latin, with their own histories and often literary standards. An argument could be made for the dialects of Toscana and Lazio being dialects, as they form a continuum and Standard Italian is primarily derived from literary Florentine, but I digress even more egregiously. However, because the Italian government doesn't want to deal with the complexity of having 20-odd historical minority languages that it would be constitutionally required to protect, it says most of them are dialects, except for the ones it cannot even remotely fudge, eg. Sardinian and Friulian, which are grammatically and phonetically too distinct to even pretend aren't their own languages.

Q. You've featured on Nylon Japan several times as a group, but this is your first solo cover on a Japanese magazine. How was the shoot?

HAN: I was nervous about shooting for a magazine on my own. I prepared a lot for today's shoot, so I'm glad the actual photos came out well. I already want to shoot together again! By the way, the shots with the black jacket are my favorite.

Q. Today was a collaboration shoot with NARS. What is your impression of the brand?

HAN: NARS products have good pigmentation, so I've already used it often for makeup. When I was still a trainee, I loved the tinted moisturizer - it feels so comfortable! It is perfect for my skin tone and evens it out well, so I have a good impression of NARS.

Q. We tried out several makeup looks with NARS products today. What were your thoughts?

HAN: I think that eye makeup is very important, and the first "cool" themed shots have a makeup look where the inner eye is very bright and bold. The hairstyle and clothing is also bold, so I felt it was a challenging style. It's a bit strange to say it myself, but I thought it really suited me! For the "passion" themed shots, the makeup and hair both have a strong impact, so I was worried if it would suit me. The staff including the photographer and the visual director guided me kindly, so the shots came out well. With the pearl shimmer eyeshadow, I like that it has a slightly wicked vibe. For the "euphoria" themed shots, the makeup has a more pure vibe than the "passion" makeup, but still has a mischievious look, so l thought it really suited me. I was able to shoot with a relaxed expression. The most difficult part for me was the crying scene. I tried really hard to make my tears flow prettily at the right timing (laughs).

Q. Which of the products we used today is your favorite?

HAN: The lip products. All of the shades are suitable for everyday wear, so I like them. My lips are light, so having one of these with me would be very handy. But all the products were great! The eyeshadow has a soft texture soit's very comfortable. Usually when I have eye makeup, I need setting spray, but this stayed light and comfortable for a long time even with no setting spray! I would like to try these for stage makeup. The blush comes in cute colors and has good color payoff, and it was great that it didn't smudge much. It was very easy to fix up.

Q. You mentioned you use setting spray to avoid dryness - are there other beauty products you use?

HAN: I focus on skincare products. I have dry skin, so I always apply a lot of cream to keep my skin soft. I use two different types of cream. I'm also particular about the makeup finish, and even when it's a heavy application, I take care to adjust it so it looks natural and like me.

Q. NARS's brand message is "Trust Yourself". It encourages people to freely enjoy makeup based on their own feelings. Do you have any words for your fans who like makeup?

HAN: It's a great message. I think that makeup is a type of art. That is to say, it has the power to make people happy or satisfied. I hope that STAY look into makeup that can bring out their own charms and enjoy expressing themselves.

Q. The theme of this issue is "Be Yourself". Fashion is another way to express yourself - Could you tell us what you pay attention to in fashion? Is there anything you want to buy this spring?

HAN: When thinking of an outfit, I always focus on not doing "too much," and also keeping my own character. For that reason, I look into a lots of types of fashion. This summer, I want to get a balmacaan coat. I've been wearing the same one for four years, so I would like a new one.

Q. In line with the issue theme, tell us what makes something "HAN".

HAN: Right. "Being Han" is exactly being Han Jisung. The thing I'm taking most care of to be Han Jisung is to be happy, and to live honestly as myself

Q. Is there anything specific you do to live each day happily? For example, a small habit.

HAN:Actually, not sticking too much to small habits might be one of the most important things for being happy. For example, if you tripped on a stone and fell on the path you walk every day, if you get caught up in those small details, something unexpected can bring a negative vibe to your whole day. So I deliberately don't have a routine, and if something unexpected happens then I can roll with it easily. This means you don't take on unneeded stress and you have room for new moments of happiness. Another thing I'm working on to be happy is to not overthink people's words. I think that's really important to live happily.

Q. What kind of child were you? You're known as an all-rounder, but were you always skilled at things?

HAN: Yes, when I was very young I was quite handy- I quickly became good at little things like sculpting with clay and making sandcastles. I could do things as well as others, but if you asked me what I excelled at, there wasn't so much... Because I was quite smart, it was difficult to figure out what I actually wanted to do, but one days I became entranced by music.

Q. When did you first become captivated by music?

HAN: (counting) I was 10 or 11. I thought an artist looked so cool on stage and I wanted to be like that.

From then, my passion in music grew, but when I look back, the thing that I was first drawn to wasn't the music itself but the stage. I thought I needed to do music to perform on stage, and so I studied it.

Q. Looking back on your time as a child just awakening to music, is there a song that sticks out?

HAN: Stairway to Heaven. This was also when I was about 10 or 11? At that time, I was playing an acoustic guitar, but I suddenly wanted to play an electric guitar and asked my dad for one. He told me, if you can play this song, I'll buy you an electric guitar. When I hear this song, I remember that time.

Q. Do you remember writing your first song?

HAN: (counting) I think I was around 13. I wrote lyrics for the first time and with a childish naivety I thought I really had talent, but when I showed it to my older brother he teased me (laughs). I also tried composing with the acoustic guitar and played it for my dad and older brother, but I wasn't as good as I am now, so I remember they told me to enjoy songwriting as a hobby. I dont remember the lyrics, but it was a song based on the story of a bunny in a tuxedo that I'd read as a child (laughs).

Q. After that time, how did it feel to debut in Stray Kids and release your own songs to the world?

HAN: It was indescribable. Not only to release the songs I'd made to the public and for so many people to hear them, but also to get feedback. That feedback was so precious to me, it made me feel that all my hard work so far hadn't been for nothing and it encouraged me. Until then, I'd had doubts about the future, but at that moment they all disappeared.

Q. Of all the songs you've worked on so far, which has the most meaning to you?

HAN: Slump. I've made many songs, but this one sticks with me. It was released in several languages and I'm fond of it as one of my earliest songs. It's a cherished song that holds a lot of memories. I get really happy to hear from STAY that this song soothes them.

Q. How do you refresh yourself when you've come to an impasse in song writing?

HAN: Before, if I was stuck when song writing, I'd go for a walk or watch a movie, but recently I go straight home. If I try to force myself through when I'm at a dead end, it makes something I love into something stressful and I don't like that, so I'm trying to stop it. If I don't completely clear my mind, nothing good will come out of it. Recently I've been able to have more variety so songwriting has come easier, and I'm enjoying it more.
