Excited for Eve L Ewing on X-Men. I really enjoyed her work on Champions, despite the unfortunate circumstances surrounding it, and I've wanted to read more of her writing. (But I'm so far behind on Black Panther--I haven't even finished the Coates run--that it's going to be a huge project to catch up).
And the actual concept sounds an awful lot like a Mekanix sequel, with Shadowcat returning to Chicago once again, living anonymously and away from the X-Men as a barista, until something arises that requires her attention. (It goes unremarked in the previews, but I assume she's also living under a fake identity, given that the last time we saw her she was walking door-to-door executing fascists, until the world ran out of fascists, and that's obviously the kind of thing that forever interferes with plans for a quiet and uninteresting life.)
Not completely sure how I feel about Emma as the co-star of what again, feels a lot like Mekanix volume 2, but I do like how that relationship is carrying over--and I think there's something to be said for the two ex-teachers who arguably cared the most about actually teaching (albeit definitely not the two who cared the most about the actual students), finding themselves in that role again now that they've both left the Xavier/Jean Grey school behind.
I've seen some criticism of the concept as representing a regression for Kitty, but I see it more as the continuation of her longstanding pattern. For decades now she's been the one who just goes really hard for a short period of time, during particularly rough times for the X-Men, before burning out completely. And then she goes away--usually to Chicago--to reset, until something comes up, that tells her she can bare it all again. That was what happened when Genosha was destroyed, and she crashed (leading into the original Mekanix); and after AvX and it's various followups, when she had to quit the JGS and take on a reduced role, after the planet almost exploded too many times; and after her Guardians of the Galaxy run when she was living alone back in Chicago until Ororo asked her to start teaching again; and arguably at the start of Dawn of X when she was drifting alone until she needed to form the Marauders. (Ultimate Comics also pulled that twice, both times that she quit the team, though she seems to have been from Queens and not Chicago in that universe).
I think it's a good hook for using her character. It strikes me as a natural extension of her status as one of the most grounded (in the real world) X-Men, that she spends most of her time away from them doing other things. And having the character take long breaks like this addresses the fact that she's meant to struggle with depression and PTSD, so it's a pattern that I think one would expect to develop. And there's also Kitty's role within the X-Men as a franchise to consider, where she's always been the one who "can pass" if she wanted to, and faces exclusion/scapegoating from her community because of it; and where it's always shown to not really be true, because of the life she leads, and because she's not constitutionally capable of not standing up when it matters.
I am curious about why she's a barista now instead of a bartender, unless it's just because she's living anonymously so she can't go back to the same job. The obvious answer could just be because she needs to interact with kids who are significantly younger than her, and a cafe is a more workable venue than a bar. (Hopefully it's not because of blowback to the "Marauders made Kitty an alcoholic" thing that consumed The Discourse for the last four years)

[Image description: Preview panel for the comic strip at the link below. Shuri of Black Panther eyes the TARDIS of Doctor Who with apparent dismay. Unfortunately there are not image descriptions at the main Hero Of Three Faces site. End description.]
The Hero of Three Faces is fanfiction crossovers, but it’s comic strips with stick figures, but they’re triangles. Preview panel only. Click here for full cartoon. Or see the on-site navigation tutorial. Or see this blog’s FAQ, or my archive tumblog’s FAQ. Cartoons may contain unmarked spoilers. I think not only does Rogue need to be updated, but Gambit as well. He also needs a new outfit. Honestly, X-Factor was the best arc for him because he had a new look and wasn't defined as Rogue's less competent boyfriend. I thought Kelly Thompson fixed their relationship. But no, they still an on and off couple with trust issues. Really wish Remy wasn't made into this clown drunk and Rogue his long-suffering mother or baby-sitter.
Yeah Gambit also needs a new look but I actually like his suit so I don’t mind this one. I also love All-New X-Factor, that one and X-23 (2010) are my favourite books of him.
I think it is too early to dislike their new solo considering it has only been one issue and plots take time to develop. Remy was recently turned into Death in KOX and went through a traumatic experience so I don’t find it that weird or annoying that he may have drinking problems. It will most likely get discussed in this book since they keep bringing it up and he is also shown with a bottle in his hand in the new issue previews & most likely drunk when he attacks Black Panther. And I think it makes characters more real when you actually see them having struggles and problems. If it doesn’t actually get mentioned and doesn’t lead anywhete tho, you can say anything you want about it but like I said it is too early. I saw a lot of people not liking their characterizations but I feel like they were done on purpose. I will have to read at least until issue four to give my input on this because comics start to get more resolved then.
Have a good day!

LOOK AT THESE X MEN
Tumblr media
So, I just want to talk some comic books, because some stuff is looking cool. But it requires some context.
Tumblr media
So, near the start of the 2000's, a little book called Ultimate Spider Man came out. It was meant to be a reader friendly alternative to the main Spider Man comics that had been running since the 60's. You know, something a bit less overwhelming. It was mostly written by Brian Michael Bendis, and it ran up to 2015. It was a massive success, and it led Marvel to make many other "Ultimate" comics adapting many of their other characters, such as the Fantastic Four, the X Men, and the Avengers, rechristened the Ultimates. Many of these influenced their modern film counterparts, with USM inspiring much of the Sam Raimi Spidey films and the ASM films, and the Ultimates heavily influencing the MCU Avengers. However, in the 2010's, it started to peter out, the only real notable exception being the creation of Miles Morales, the second Spider Man. As such, in 2015, the universe was destroyed by the event Secret Wars (2015), written by one Jonathan Hickman.
Tumblr media
Hickman got his start at Marvel working on some Nick Fury stuff, but really got his start when he began writing Fantastic Four, pushing it forward to new heights. In which, he introduced the character of The Maker, a corrupted evil version of the Ultimate Reed Richards (Mister Fantastic). From there, he began to write The Avengers, creating a grand multi year epic that all led up to the new Secret Wars, Marvel's closest equivalent to DC's many crises, where the multiverse was destroyed and reformed by Dr. Doom into Battleworld. After this event, the Ultimate universe (World 1610) was destroyed, and the main universe (World 616) was reformed, with a few changes (Such as bringing in Miles). From there, after a brief period of independence, he reformed the X Men into the Krakoan era with HoX and PoX, though he left that period to other creatives to focus on other things. Then eventually, he came back.
Tumblr media
After a decent amount of teasing, Hickman began work to bring back the Ultimate Universe... kind of. Hickman brings back the Maker in this four issue mini to mess around with universe 6160, futzing with it to make his own epic universe. However, things don't go exactly to plan, but it doesn't really matter, because a new Ultimate universe comes back, with new characters like a young Iron Man and so on and so forth, introduced this month in the book "Ultimate Universe #1"
Tumblr media
This book kicks off this grand new universe, but it will be flanked by others in the near future. Hickman himself is taking over Ultimate Spider Man, a story of an older, married Peter who gets his powers after living a longer life. Cool. There is also a Black Panther book. I don't have too much to say, but it does look neat. However, why we are here is for Peach Momoko's Ultimate X Men, which got a backup preview in Ultimate Universe.
Tumblr media
This is a big book for Peach Momoko, a Japanese artist who was hired by Marvel as mainly a cover artist, but with some of her own works as well. It seems to focus on the character of Armor, one of the many mutants by Marvel, seeing her grow into a mutant in this universe. And it looks FUCKING SICK!
Again, it got some teaser images in Ultimate Universe, though it won't come out until next March. However, this brief look gives some interesting images that I'm just obsessed with.
Tumblr media
I am obsessed with this seeming adolescent body horror approach. It feels right in line with this idea of younger mutants dealing with all these ideas in a new, cool looking way. The artstyle really helps it, since a lot of the given teasers are very dialogue light. It lets the art and the emotions therein shine.
Tumblr media
It does, at least at the start, seem to focus on just a few dorks hanging out. They're both mutants by the way, the white haired kid is a character created for a cover by Peach Momoko, and she's getting integrated here.
Tumblr media
Overall, it looks really promising. How will they integrate the actual X Men, who knows. But, I'm excited for this interesting take on this gaggle of mutants
