Ooo What if…? episode 6!
What I like is that the previews can be misleading.
I thought maybe this was going to be set in the same verse as ep 2 where maybe Killmonger was set up as Black Panther after being recalled from Oakland in childhood BUT—
The moment I saw him team up with weapons dealer Tony I was like oh no this is all a set up. No way would Killmonger work w/ Tony.
Gotta say, I hated seeing him kill Rhodes and T’Challa. Do not like the only time we see Rhodey and Sam it’s for two seconds and a death. Granted they’ve killed all the other main Avengers in other eps and several times, but still.
I think I was hoping they would do something more transformative with Erik but it was interesting to see a verse where he wins. I saw that Ten Rings mention!
I LOVED seeing Ramonda as the previous general - a callback to the comics where the Dora were typically married to royalty IIRC. She was bamf. Love to see all Okoye content. I appreciated that even though Shuri was a child her thoughts and opinions were valued by her parents - even if they chose not to heed her warnings, she was consulted and allowed to speak out without being shut down. It just gives such nice insight into the royal family in a way we didn’t see in the movie.
And Ramonda crying for T’Challa? We all felt that one.
Love Shuri and Pepper teaming up - sad we didn’t see it but I think we’ll see them again later. It seems like they’re setting up a multiverse team up for end of season.
#what if…?#what if spoilers#erik killmonger#didn’t love this one as much Bc Disney has issues w handling its villains like Killmonger and Karli#rhodes in the system line was oof#rhodes also doing a black market deal seemed weird#the war set up was also odd#the anime line was funny tho#pls kill Tony every episode it’s hilarious

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021) Review
So, are we just gonna sit here not addressing the elephant in the room or do we give director Hayao Miyazaki a call and make him aware that he has full right to sue Disney for blatantly stealing his design of the water dragon from his movie Spirited Away? I don’t know, just seems like the cool thing to do these days, you know, suing Disney? Wait, is that me throwing shade at Black Widow for no reason? Why yes, yes it is.
Plot: Martial-arts master Shang-Chi confronts the past he thought he left behind when he's drawn into the web of the mysterious Ten Rings organization.
Critics and reviews are useless. Yes, stating that makes me a hypocrite of the highest order of orders seeing as I am a film critic myself, albeit an unpaid one. I even have a T-shirt that states “UNPAID FILM CRITIC” and that is both hilarious and also self-heart-breaking but nonetheless you are not here to read about my wardrobe contents. You’re here to read about my thoughts on Shang-Chi and all those numerous rings that are referred to even though we all know that the only ring that matters is the One Ring that needs to be taken deep into Mordor and cast back into the fiery chasm from whence it came!! Unfortunately that ring does not make an appearance in this film nor is it even mentioned, and that may be due to the case of it belonging to a different franchise entirely however, and this is a big however... I don’t give a crap! Gimme the One Ring!! I wants it!! The precious is MINE!! But anyway, returning to my original point from which I strayed unnecessarily, this movie underlined how frustrating reviews can be.
You see, Shang-Chi is a solid movie. It very much is a good solo superhero origin story that features some well choreographed martial arts action sequences and makes great strides in pushing for diversity in major Hollywood blockbusters. Similar to Black Panther in fact. That is all well and good, however about half a month ago this film was previewed to a bunch of critics and they all came out with their social media reactions and reviews screaming and hailing this movie as being one of the greatest superhero solo movies ever. Naturally that got us all really excited, especially since at least in my eyes, with me being a huge Marvel Cinematic Universe fan and all, Shang-Chi was never particularly in my radar of interest originally as I was more looking forward to other MCU upcoming titles such as Thor: Love & Thunder, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and The Eternals. So when critics came out on the internet spilling endless praise for Shang-Chi, my first reaction was “DA FAK!?” following which I joined on the hype train and screamed “choo-choo!” in excitement as I looked forward to this new exciting entry in the MCU. Having now watched the film I come out feeling disappointed, as even though I enjoyed it, like any Marvel film, I find that this movie suffers heavily from being overrated.
As stated prior, Shang-Chi, like any Marvel movie, is enjoyable. It’s perfect blockbuster movie escapism filled with action, fun characters, big visuals and many references and Easter Eggs that would excite die hard franchise fans. However does this film really offer anything truly out of the ordinary that other films prior to it have not? The central dramatic plot dynamic involving a son and his father not seeing eye to eye due to one being blind sighted from reality is very common in the world of cinema. Also the martial arts action sequences, though certainly well choreographed and especially one of the first fight sequences set in a magic forest (naturally) that plays out more like a dance is worth mentioning, are cool to look at, however they too are downgraded by some sloppy editing and camera cuts that really make you lose the feeling of immersion that some superior martial arts films have such as Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon or The Raid or any of the Bruce Lee movies. I’m certain that the stunts and choreography are effortless, but due to the shaky filmmaking and jump cuts I missed a lot of it. However nevertheless for Marvel and the superhero genre as a whole this is evidently more impressive than the usual Hulk-smashing shenanigans.
The central main cast is made up of mostly Asian heritage which of course is great for diversity in cinema, and to be fair many of these actors prove themselves to be major stars that fit quite smoothly into such a big blockbuster as Shang-Chi. Simu Liu as the titular character is a natural born star. He has that genuine star power and he easily proves that he can carry a big movie. He has the necessary charm and charisma that shines on screen, so I look forward to seeing him more as this character in future MCU entries, and also hope this proves Simu Liu a gateway into more mainstream movie projects. Awkwafina is fine in her role as Shang-Chi’s best friend Katy, and it was nice seeing a central duo of a man and a woman that doesn’t force a useless love story between them. They are just friends and it was nice seeing that type of dynamic. That being said I personally am not a fan of Awkwafina and her overly croaky voice, but that of course is just personal preference. Tony Leung as Shang-Chi’s father and also previously Marvel teased villain the Mandarin brings the necessary heft and gravitas to the role, and also a certain appearance by a British actor returning as a character we’ve seen previously in another Marvel movie was a welcome surprise that brought many laughs in my screening and honestly this guy nearly stole the entire show. It’s just that this is such a well written and performed character and I’m so happy they brought him back. I’m certain if you look it up on the old Internet Explorer you’ll find out who I’m talking about, however no spoilers in this review.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is a perfectly enjoyable Marvel movie featuring martial arts. That’s in a nutshell what it is. It has moments of true greatness but in my opinion doesn’t actually stand out that much from other Marvel solo superhero outings. That’s in no way a complaint towards the movie, I’m just confused as to why this movie is so overrated? Maybe I’m missing something. Regardless, I’m now gonna go back and focus on the ring that actually matters - the One Ring - and begin yet another marathon of the Lord of the Rings movies. Ciao!
Overall score: 6/10

Bowl Previews: December 21
After dipping our toes in the water we dive right in. December 21st has the highest number of bowls per day in the whole year. Let’s check it out.
Celebration Bowl: Alcorn State 9-3 (6-1) vs #23 North Carolina A&T 8-3 (6-2) (Atlanta, GA)
The HBCU National Championship Game pits two of the most successful teams in Black College Football against each other once more. Alcorn State won the SWAC Championship Game for the fourth time in six seasons with a solid 39-24 victory over Southern. The Braves are playing in their third Celebration Bowl, and are facing off against a familiar and unwelcome opponent.
North Carolina A&T has appeared in four of the five Celebration Bowls since the founding of the game. The Aggies have so far dominated the new HBCU title game, victimizing Alcorn State twice in the process. This year, A&T enters in a slightly weaker position. Florida A&M would be in Atlanta were it not for a postseason ban from the NCAA. North Carolina A&T won the spot by finishing in 2nd in the MEAC. Can the Aggies keep their success in the Celebration Bowl alive or will the Braves finally triumph?
-
New Mexico Bowl: Central Michigan 8-5 (6-2) vs San Diego State 9-3 (5-3) (Albuquerque, NM)
The New Mexico Bowl pits two of the better teams in the MAC and MWC against each other. Central Michigan has experienced a turnaround in Jim McElwain’s first year in Mount Pleasant. The Chippewas were one of the worst teams in FBS ball last season but rebounded to win the MAC West in 2019. They were upset in the MAC Championship and have been relegated to Albuquerque, but they still face a challenging opponent.
San Diego State has been a consistent winner among the G5 this past decade. The Aztecs’s rock solid defense was mostly able to mask a sub-par offense, but it hindered SDSU from truly ascending to the top of the ranks in the Mountain West (and basically cost them the MWC West division). Still, the season saw some high points: wins over UCLA and BYU.
-
Cure Bowl: Liberty 7-5 vs Georgia Southern 7-5 (5-3) (Orlando, FL)
Liberty is playing in their first ever bowl games. The youngest FBS team only took years to reach the postseason. It was a weak schedule, but hey, baby steps.
Georgia Southern haven’t quite reasserted themselves as the cream of the Sun Belt, but the Eagles are on the right path. GSU managed to upend rival Appalachian State, handing the Mountaineers their only loss on the season. Chad Lunsford’s group get to reacquaint themselves with another recent refugee from the FCS when they take on Liberty.
-
Boca Raton Bowl: SMU 10-2 (6-2) at Florida Atlantic 10-3 (7-1) (Boca Raton, FL)
SMU has had their best season since the 1980′s. The Mustangs were tantalizingly close to the AAC West Championship and a date with the Cotton Bowl. It’ll have to wait for another year, but Southern Methodist can definitely celebrate a job well done. Who knows what the future has in store for Sonny Dykes and company.
Florida Atlantic doesn’t have to travel far for their bowl game. The Owls won Conference-USA for the second time in three years under Lane Kiffin, and while the author of their turnaround has departed, FAU looks poised to continue their on-filed success. SMU will be a tall task for these Owls, expect a lot of points.
-
Camellia Bowl: Florida International 6-6 (3-5) vs Arkansas State 7-5 (5-3) (Montgomery, AL)
FIU took a bumpy route to the postseason, but the Butch Davis’s Panthers made it all the same. Despite finishing tied for fourth in the C-USA East Division, Florida International made the bowl thanks to a shocking upset over Miami late in the year. It must have been a little emotional for old coach Davis, but his squad can celebrate another bowl, and that’s the most important thing.
Arkansas State continues to be the Sun Belt’s most consistent winner. The Red Wolves placed 2nd in the West Division. Head coach Blake Anderson personally overcame a lot of hardship this year. My hat’s off to him on a job well done.
-
Las Vegas Bowl: #19 Boise State 12-1 (8-0) vs Washington 7-5 (4-5) (Las Vegas, NV)
Now this one is interesting, although a bit of a letdown for both teams all the same. Boise State was three points away from an undefeated season and a spot in the Cotton Bowl, but lost heartbreaker to BYU while starting QB Hank Bachmeier was injured. When healthy, the Broncos steamrolled the rest of the Mountain West. They’ll be well positioned for another run at the NY6 next year, but for now they’ll have to overcome a familiar face.
This isn’t the 2019 Washington thought they’d see. The Huskies have been the #1 team in the PAC-12 since breaking through in 2016, but UW fell short too many times this year to keep things going. Unfortunately, head coach Chris Petersen, who elevated Washington back to these illustrious heights, is calling it quits due to mental exhaustion. One of the most successful coaches in the 21st century, who authored Boise’s best year as well as the turnaround in Seattle, is taking a break from the game. We wish him the best. It must seem like a fitting, but perhaps cruel twist of fate to play his old team in his last game.
-
New Orleans Bowl: #20 Appalachian State 12-1 (7-1) vs UAB 9-4 (6-2) (New Orleans, LA)
Much like Boise State, Appalachian State was so close to so much more. The Mountaineers pulled off upsets of both North and South Carolina, and had their best chance yet at an undefeated season were it not for a 3 point loss to Georgia Southern. They would have been the first Sun Belt team to ever make a major bowl game. Unfortunately, head coach Eliah Drinkwitz won’t be joining his team, he’s headed to Missouri. It’s a tough life out there to be a successful G5 program.
UAB continues to defy expectations. The Blazers didn’t win Conference-USA again, but they won the West Division in a stirring display of grit. They’re one of college football’s best stories of the past decade. I wish them luck, they’ll need it against App State.

SUMMER 2019 NEW RELEASES
June 21
Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am Timothy Greenfield-Sanders, USA, 2019, 119m With the peerless style and rich perspective on Black America she brought to such acclaimed novels as Beloved, The Bluest Eye, and Song of Solomon, Toni Morrison has earned a reputation as one America’s greatest living writers. Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am is an artful and intimate documentary about Morrison’s life and work—from her working class upbringing in Lorain, Ohio, and her 1970s-era book tours with Muhammad Ali, to the front lines with Angela Davis and her own riverfront writing room—and the countless people she has inspired. Featuring interviews with Oprah Winfrey, Angela Davis, Hilton Als, Fran Lebowitz, and Morrison herself. A Magnolia Pictures release.

The Plagiarists Peter Parlow, USA, 2019, 76m Co-written by experimental filmmakers James N. Kienitz Wilkins and Robin Schavoir, The Plagiarists is at once a hilarious send-up of low-budget American indie filmmaking and a probing inquiry into race, relationships, and the social uncanny. A young novelist (Lucy Kaminsky) and her cinematographer boyfriend (Eamon Monaghan) are waylaid by a snowstorm on their way to visit a friend in upstate New York and are taken in by the kindly yet enigmatic Clip (Michael “Clip” Payne of Parliament Funkadelic), who puts them up for the night. But an accidental discovery months later recasts in an unnerving light what had seemed like an agreeable evening, stoking resentments both latent and not-so-latent. Exhilaratingly intelligent and distinctively shot on a vintage TV-news camera, The Plagiarists is a work whose provocations are inseparable from its pleasures. A 2019 New Directors/New Films selection. A KimStim release.

Rojo Benjamín Naishtat, Argentina/Brazil/France/Netherlands/Germany/Belgium/Switzerland, 2018, 109m English and Spanish with English subtitles In mid-’70s Argentina, at the height of that country’s infamous Dirty War, Claudio (Darío Grandinetti) is a well-heeled, cool-headed lawyer living with his wife and teenage daughter in a comfortable provincial suburb. When an innocuous dinner date ends in a startling altercation with a stranger, Claudio’s apparently placid lifestyle is disrupted, and fault lines begin to appear in the frictionless surface of his professional and domestic existence. What follows is a brooding, warm-hued fugue, where political calculations, economic stratagems, and tenuous social mores are played out with slow-burning ferocity against a harmonic bassline of barely repressed indignation and simmering paranoia. A Distrib Films release.
August 2
La Flor Mariano Llinás, Argentina, 2018, 803m (screening in 4 parts) A decade in the making, Mariano Llinás’s follow-up to his 2008 cult classic Extraordinary Stories is an unrepeatable labor of love and madness that redefines the concept of binge-viewing. The director himself appears at the start to preview the six disparate episodes that await, each starring the same four remarkable actresses: Elisa Carricajo, Valeria Correa, Pilar Gamboa, and Laura Paredes. Overflowing with nested subplots and whiplash digressions, La Flor shape-shifts from a B-movie to a musical to a spy thriller to a category-defying metafiction—all of them without endings—to a remake of a very well-known French classic and, finally, to an enigmatic period piece that lacks a beginning (granted, all notions of beginnings and endings become fuzzy after 14 hours). An adventure in scale and duration, La Flor is a marvelously entertaining exploration of the possibilities of fiction that lands somewhere close to its outer limits. An NYFF56 selection. A Grasshopper Film release.

Piranhas / La paranza dei bambini Claudio Giovannesi, Italy, 2019, 112m Italian with English subtitles The latest from Claudio Giovannesi (Fiore) is this singular coming-of-age story that won the Silver Bear for Best Screenplay at the Berlin Film Festival. Newcomer Francesco Di Napoli stars as 15-year-old Nicola, who leads a pack of cocksure hellions captivated by the lifestyle of the local Camorra as they descend into the violent, paranoid world of Naples’s dominant crime group. Based on the novel by Roberto Saviano, who co-wrote the screenplay and mined similar territory in his devastating Gomorrah, Piranhas is a haunting reflection on doomed adolescence. A 2019 Open Roads selection. A Music Box Films release.
August 16
What You Gonna Do When the World’s on Fire? Roberto Minervini, Italy/USA/France, 2018, 123m Italian-born, American South–based filmmaker Roberto Minervini’s follow-up to his Texas Trilogy is a portrait of African-Americans in New Orleans struggling to maintain their unique cultural identity and to find social justice. Shot in very sharp black and white, the film is focused on Judy, trying to keep her family afloat and save her bar before it’s snapped up by speculators; Ronaldo and Titus, two brothers growing up surrounded by violence and with a father in jail; Kevin, trying to keep the glorious local traditions of the Mardi Gras Indians alive; and the local Black Panthers, trying to stand up against a new, deadly wave of racism. This is a passionately urgent and strangely lyrical film experience. An NYFF56 selection. A KimStim release.
August 23
Genesis Philippe Lesage, Canada, 2018, 130m French with English subtitles Following his autobiographical 2015 narrative debut The Demons, Philippe Lesage continues to chronicle the life of young Felix (Édouard Tremblay-Grenier), now diverging to capture the romantic trials and tribulations of two Quebecois teen siblings. While the charismatic, Salinger-reading Guillaume (Théodore Pellerin) wrestles with his sexual identity at his all-boys boarding school, the more ostensibly grown-up Charlotte (Noée Abita) discovers the casual cruelty of the adult world that awaits her post-graduation. Lesage and his young actors depict the aches of becoming oneself with nuance, honesty, and compassion, and the result is one of the most beautiful coming-of-age stories in years. A 2019 New Directors/New Films selection. A Film Movement release.
August 30
The Load Ognjen Glavonić, Serbia/France/Croatia/Iran/Qatar, 2018, 98m Serbian with English subtitles Ognjen Glavonić’s wintry road movie concerns a truck driver (Leon Lucev) tasked with transporting mysterious cargo across a scorched landscape from Kosovo to Belgrade during the 1999 NATO bombing of Yugoslavia. A companion piece to the director’s 2016 documentary Depth Two, The Load is a work of enveloping atmosphere that puts a politically charged twist on the highway thrillers it recalls: Henri-Georges Clouzot’s The Wages of Fear and William Friedkin’s retelling, Sorcerer. The streamlined premise gives way to a slow-dawning reckoning, in which implications of guilt and complicity slowly but surely sink in. A 2019 New Directors/New Films selection. A Grasshopper Film release.

Say Amen, Somebody George T. Nierenberg, USA, 1982, 101m One of the most acclaimed music documentaries of all time, Say Amen, Somebody is George T. Nierenberg’s exuberant, funny, and deeply moving celebration of 20th-century American gospel music. With unrivaled access to the movement’s luminaries, Thomas Dorsey and Mother Willie Mae Ford Smith, Nierenberg masterfully records their fascinating stories alongside earth-shaking, show-stopping performances by the Barrett Sisters, the O’Neal Twins, and others. As much a fascinating time capsule as it is a peerless concert movie, Say Amen, Somebody returns to Film at Lincoln Center in a gorgeous 4K restoration by Milestone Films, with support from the National Museum of African American History and Culture. An NYFF20 selection. A Milestone Films release.
New releases are organized by Dennis Lim and Florence Almozini.
