Ooo What if…? episode 6!
What I like is that the previews can be misleading.
I thought maybe this was going to be set in the same verse as ep 2 where maybe Killmonger was set up as Black Panther after being recalled from Oakland in childhood BUT—
The moment I saw him team up with weapons dealer Tony I was like oh no this is all a set up. No way would Killmonger work w/ Tony.
Gotta say, I hated seeing him kill Rhodes and T’Challa. Do not like the only time we see Rhodey and Sam it’s for two seconds and a death. Granted they’ve killed all the other main Avengers in other eps and several times, but still.
I think I was hoping they would do something more transformative with Erik but it was interesting to see a verse where he wins. I saw that Ten Rings mention!
I LOVED seeing Ramonda as the previous general - a callback to the comics where the Dora were typically married to royalty IIRC. She was bamf. Love to see all Okoye content. I appreciated that even though Shuri was a child her thoughts and opinions were valued by her parents - even if they chose not to heed her warnings, she was consulted and allowed to speak out without being shut down. It just gives such nice insight into the royal family in a way we didn’t see in the movie.
And Ramonda crying for T’Challa? We all felt that one.
Love Shuri and Pepper teaming up - sad we didn’t see it but I think we’ll see them again later. It seems like they’re setting up a multiverse team up for end of season.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021) Review
Tumblr media
So, are we just gonna sit here not addressing the elephant in the room or do we give director Hayao Miyazaki a call and make him aware that he has full right to sue Disney for blatantly stealing his design of the water dragon from his movie Spirited Away? I don’t know, just seems like the cool thing to do these days, you know, suing Disney? Wait, is that me throwing shade at Black Widow for no reason? Why yes, yes it is.
Plot: Martial-arts master Shang-Chi confronts the past he thought he left behind when he's drawn into the web of the mysterious Ten Rings organization.
Critics and reviews are useless. Yes, stating that makes me a hypocrite of the highest order of orders seeing as I am a film critic myself, albeit an unpaid one. I even have a T-shirt that states “UNPAID FILM CRITIC” and that is both hilarious and also self-heart-breaking but nonetheless you are not here to read about my wardrobe contents. You’re here to read about my thoughts on Shang-Chi and all those numerous rings that are referred to even though we all know that the only ring that matters is the One Ring that needs to be taken deep into Mordor and cast back into the fiery chasm from whence it came!! Unfortunately that ring does not make an appearance in this film nor is it even mentioned, and that may be due to the case of it belonging to a different franchise entirely however, and this is a big however... I don’t give a crap! Gimme the One Ring!! I wants it!! The precious is MINE!! But anyway, returning to my original point from which I strayed unnecessarily, this movie underlined how frustrating reviews can be.
You see, Shang-Chi is a solid movie. It very much is a good solo superhero origin story that features some well choreographed martial arts action sequences and makes great strides in pushing for diversity in major Hollywood blockbusters. Similar to Black Panther in fact. That is all well and good, however about half a month ago this film was previewed to a bunch of critics and they all came out with their social media reactions and reviews screaming and hailing this movie as being one of the greatest superhero solo movies ever. Naturally that got us all really excited, especially since at least in my eyes, with me being a huge Marvel Cinematic Universe fan and all, Shang-Chi was never particularly in my radar of interest originally as I was more looking forward to other MCU upcoming titles such as Thor: Love & Thunder, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and The Eternals. So when critics came out on the internet spilling endless praise for Shang-Chi, my first reaction was “DA FAK!?” following which I joined on the hype train and screamed “choo-choo!” in excitement as I looked forward to this new exciting entry in the MCU. Having now watched the film I come out feeling disappointed, as even though I enjoyed it, like any Marvel film, I find that this movie suffers heavily from being overrated.
As stated prior, Shang-Chi, like any Marvel movie, is enjoyable. It’s perfect blockbuster movie escapism filled with action, fun characters, big visuals and many references and Easter Eggs that would excite die hard franchise fans. However does this film really offer anything truly out of the ordinary that other films prior to it have not? The central dramatic plot dynamic involving a son and his father not seeing eye to eye due to one being blind sighted from reality is very common in the world of cinema. Also the martial arts action sequences, though certainly well choreographed and especially one of the first fight sequences set in a magic forest (naturally) that plays out more like a dance is worth mentioning, are cool to look at, however they too are downgraded by some sloppy editing and camera cuts that really make you lose the feeling of immersion that some superior martial arts films have such as Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon or The Raid or any of the Bruce Lee movies. I’m certain that the stunts and choreography are effortless, but due to the shaky filmmaking and jump cuts I missed a lot of it. However nevertheless for Marvel and the superhero genre as a whole this is evidently more impressive than the usual Hulk-smashing shenanigans.
The central main cast is made up of mostly Asian heritage which of course is great for diversity in cinema, and to be fair many of these actors prove themselves to be major stars that fit quite smoothly into such a big blockbuster as Shang-Chi. Simu Liu as the titular character is a natural born star. He has that genuine star power and he easily proves that he can carry a big movie. He has the necessary charm and charisma that shines on screen, so I look forward to seeing him more as this character in future MCU entries, and also hope this proves Simu Liu a gateway into more mainstream movie projects. Awkwafina is fine in her role as Shang-Chi’s best friend Katy, and it was nice seeing a central duo of a man and a woman that doesn’t force a useless love story between them. They are just friends and it was nice seeing that type of dynamic. That being said I personally am not a fan of Awkwafina and her overly croaky voice, but that of course is just personal preference. Tony Leung as Shang-Chi’s father and also previously Marvel teased villain the Mandarin brings the necessary heft and gravitas to the role, and also a certain appearance by a British actor returning as a character we’ve seen previously in another Marvel movie was a welcome surprise that brought many laughs in my screening and honestly this guy nearly stole the entire show. It’s just that this is such a well written and performed character and I’m so happy they brought him back. I’m certain if you look it up on the old Internet Explorer you’ll find out who I’m talking about, however no spoilers in this review.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is a perfectly enjoyable Marvel movie featuring martial arts. That’s in a nutshell what it is. It has moments of true greatness but in my opinion doesn’t actually stand out that much from other Marvel solo superhero outings. That’s in no way a complaint towards the movie, I’m just confused as to why this movie is so overrated? Maybe I’m missing something. Regardless, I’m now gonna go back and focus on the ring that actually matters - the One Ring - and begin yet another marathon of the Lord of the Rings movies. Ciao!
Overall score: 6/10

‘Black Widow’ Climbs To $35M+ WW; Sets Pandemic Era Benchmarks – International Box Office Update
Friday Update: Together with domestic’s $13.2M Thursday night and two-days worth of offshore money of $22.4M, Disney/Marvel’s Black Widow stands at a running global tally of $35.6M. Industry estimates forecasted that the standalone MCU title starring Scarlett Johansson could reach a height of $140M.
Internationally, yesterday the Cate Shortland-directed movie debuted in 30 additional material markets, including Germany, Russia, Australia, Japan, Korea, Brazil and Mexico, taking the full total to 41 material markets to date.
Here’s how the territories to date breakdown: Korea ($3.3M), UK ($3.1M), France ($2.9M), Australia ($1.7M), Italy ($1.2M), Russia ($1.1M), Mexico ($1M), Hong Kong ($900K), Japan ($700K), and other territories ($6.5M).
Breaking this down for the Thursday markets which opened, Korea debuted to No. 1 with the second-highest opening day year to date after F9, which opened on a national holiday. Social scores are encouraging with Naver 9.33 / CGV 96% and reviews are excellent. 96% of market is open with 70% of capacity restrictions. Government announced increasing the social distancing restriction to Level 4 (Highest) starting July 12.
In Australia, Natasha Romanoff debuted to No. 1 with the 3rd highest pandemic era opening day despite a third of the country’s cinemas being closed due to Covid lockdown (New South Wales). There are also restrictions on capacity in Victoria (33% of market) with auditoriums capped at 70% to a max of 300. Opening day is only -6% behind F9 which opened in 100% open market.
Russia was also No. 1, easily the highest pandemic era opening day and strong 80% market share. Opening day was 110% ahead of Thor: Ragnarok. 98% of cinemas are open with 50% capacity restrictions.
Black Widow was No. 1 south of the border in Mexico with a No. 1 rank, and the 4th highest pandemic era opening day and strong 65% market share. 88% of cinemas are open with 60% capacity restrictions.
Hong Kong opened at No. 1 with the highest non-holiday pandemic era opening day. Early movie scores an above average 4 out of 5. 100% of cinemas are open with 85% capacity restrictions.
Black Widow also conquered Japan with positive media reviews and audience reaction. No late shows in 70% of market due to Covid restriction (cinemas close at 9pm). In response to the rise of Covid cases, the government will place Tokyo under the 4th State of Emergency (SOE) from July 12-Aug. 22. The MCU Russian spy was also tops in Germany with the highest pandemic era single/opening day. 98% of cinemas are open with effectively 30-50% capacity.
Other hoorays: Black Widow was No. 1 in Austria, Bahrain, Bosnia, Croatia, Czech Republic, Egypt, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Qatar, Portugal, Saudi Arabia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Ukraine, UAE, New Zealand, Singapore, Brazil, Argentina and smaller Latin American territories. She also posted the highest pandemic era opening day in Austria, Czech Republic, Qatar and Slovakia. In Saudi Arabia, Black Widow scored Disney’s highest opening day ever.
Thursday Update: Disney/Marvel’s long-anticipated Black Widow began offshore rollout on Wednesday in 11 material markets including France, Italy and the UK, grossing an estimated $4.9M for the day and setting new pandemic era benchmarks. While pre-weekend projections were conservative at a floor of $50M, the Cate Shortland-directed origins story is poised to aim higher at the international box office.
Not included in the total above are Korea previews of $1.8M yesterday. Early social sentiment there is strong (Naver 9.22/CGV 96%) and with today’s estimated gross of $1.6M the cume in Korea is already $3.3M. Concerns over a spike in Covid cases, notably in Seoul, have led to speculation that the government may impose tough restrictions as early as tomorrow in the area so this will be a market to watch.
In the UK and despite competition from over 26M people watching the England vs Denmark Euro 2020 semi-final last night, the Scarlett Johansson-starrer kicked off with $1.7M and 70% market share. The No. 1 start is the highest opening day since the start of Covid and was 1% ahead of Fast 9 and only 5% below Captain America: Winter Soldier. The market has 85% of cinemas open with 50% capacity restrictions.
France launched atop the box office with the highest pandemic era
single/opening day at $1.6M. This is also the biggest debut excluding previews since Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker in 2019. Opening day was 21% ahead of Ant-Man And The Wasp (including previews) and 2% above Black Panther (including previews). All of France’s cinemas are back in operation with no capacity limitations.
Italy‘s $700K launch was No. 1 with the 2nd highest pandemic opening day and 80% market share. This is 11% ahead of Ant-Man 2 (which bowed on a Tuesday) and 54% over Thor: Ragnarok. There are 55% of cinemas open in the market with 50% capacity restrictions.
In further debuts, Netherlands grossed $300K on Wednesday for the top spot and best result during since Covid began. Black Widow bowed 8% above Doctor Strange and 4% below Ant-Man 2. Sweden also took in $300K on its opening day, at No. 1 and good for the biggest post-Covid single/opening day. The launch is 46% ahead of Captain America: Winter Soldier and 33% above Ant-Man 2.
Other markets including Belgium, Finland, Norway and Switzerland were No. 1 launches.
Black Widow continues rolling out this weekend and will be open in all of the material international markets by Sunday except for China, Taiwan, India, SE Asia, South Africa, Uruguay and Peru. Today sees further openings in Germany, Russia, Australia, Japan, Korea, Brazil and Mexico, among others.
