Monday 11 November 2024 is the 540th birthday of Bartolomé de las Casas (11 November 1484 – 18 July 1566), who was born in Seville on this date in 1484.

Bartolomé de las Casas arrived at Hispaniola as a young man, became a Dominican friar, and thereafter was a tireless advocate of the native peoples of the Americas, writing a scathing account of the Spanish in the New World in his A Short Account of the Destruction of the Indies. The issues he raised have only become more prominent since his time.

the reason culturally protestant societies nowadays (in the age of american hegemony, i mean) have such old and pervasive anti-catholic assumptions is not about irish americans, or about italian americans. the real reason began before the Reformation.

anglo-saxon societies vilified catholicism mostly because it was hispanic, in the nigrolegendary tradition. the british empire's interests benefitted from that association of spanish-catholic (tyrannical) against british-protestant (free, enlightened).

anti-catholicism in anglosaxon cultural bases predates america, and has always pursued imperialist and not anti-imperialist ends.

I get soooo pissed when (most of the times foreigner / leftist) people talk about the Civil War of my country, Spain, and are like “yes, it was horrible, the dictator had the men of the left mercilessly executed”. The men of the left… Interesting generalisation. Do you mean your average leftist professor? Actually, no: He wasn’t even deprived of a work, and at the end of his life, he had a house for every child he had (he had five, and also had his own house) and owned FOUR trucks (he was a truck driver). My family lived peacefully and by his death, they all were in a good position. Don’t come to me and tell me that the leftist were all sweetie pies that were viciously massacred, when you don’t know the full picture and, even more, you don’t know the whole story. After the war, came a period of prosperity and advancement that has not been acknowledged by our current politicians. It wasn’t the freest moment of our history, but people could go outside their country, and even “liberal” stuff came to this country, like the vinyl of The New York Dolls (dudes that dressed in very women-coded outfits; the front was changed, but the vinyl stayed). This is our new Black Legend. If you wholeheartedly believe that all happened in that way, tell me: Do you also believe that Philip II killed his son because he seduced his French wife?
