La passante de la Place des Vosges/ The Passerby of the Place des Vosges: in praise of Caitríona Balfe
I have recently discussed, in as much detail as possible without becoming completely boring, S's memoir Waypoints. It is, no doubt, an interesting strategic step, aiming to buy much needed time and respite from unwanted fan attention.
But if there is a memoir I would probably read in a very different, almost sentimental way, that would be hers, not his.
We have an enticing idea of the way she writes, with this lesser known essay published by the totemic NYT just a day shy of her birthday, in 2017: The First Time I Left Home (and Fell in Love), which you can read online right here - https://shorturl.at/uTX12. It is a short, dense piece with a deeply personal, even sentimental, view of Paris in autumn and spring. Something very unusual for the feisty, secretive, almost paranoid C we all know and love (admit it, you do: fair's fair). It immediately grabbed both my attention and highlighter.
Writing about Paris, especially from an Anglo-Saxon/American perspective, is a very tricky affair. So much has been said and done, from Janet Flanner's priceless Letters from Paris and Paris Journal, to Anais Nin, to Edmund White, to Hemingway, to Orwell - just to name the ones that immediately come to mind. In this particular case, we'd be dealing with a nice PR fine tuning detail, with a relatively short lifespan, aiming perhaps to reach a more sophisticated demographic than Twitter banter or a three minutes long Q&A about the current season's antics. But a wonderful detail, nevertheless.
The year is 1998. A young 19-year old Irish model wannabe just landed in the chaotic brouhaha of Roissy Airport and the first contact is brutal, language being a considerable barrier. But before that, we are treated to a masterful bistrot snapshot, with a cheeky, self-deprecating sense of humor. I mean how perfect is this?
Quite a contrast to the dream version back home:
Touché. All the moody young Frenchmen are named Pierre, C. All. Of. Them. As for watching far too many French films, there's always been something very Nouvelle Vague about you, Jeanne Moreau and Jules et Jim & all that, and I have to say this is what I found immediately endearing. I am not talking about Claire Fraser: it is you, emphatically you. The kind of impeccably dressed woman one can find pretending to read Le Monde at Le Café de Flore's terrace in Saint-Germain-des-Prés. The kind of self-evident, celestial creature whose high heels are never heard on any pavement (what is your secret?). Late Jane Birkin didn't even come close, C., mark me. However, red lipstick stains look way better on the rim of a nervously half drunk cup of noisette coffee: but then, that is me.
It was not at all like that, of course, but then something happened just across the street from the Saint-Eustache church, at Quigley's Point, a long gone Irish pub I vaguely remember. Circa 1998, our own boisterous squad used to play darts and get plastered on cheap draft beer and that undignified, syrupy manzana Basque liqueur (idiots, I am telling you, but it was very cheap) at The Bombardier, on the Place du Panthéon, just across the Seine:
Thick brogue, a quick laugh, kind eyes and blonde hair. An interesting combo, for sure. No further comment except well, this is very personal, isn't it? You've said it yourself: sometimes (fun fact: always) the really important people have nothing to do with fantasies. But we know, C, we know.
And then, suddenly, it all falls into place: Stendhal would talk about a crystallization moment. It is that split-second when everything becomes very clear. A pact of sorts occurs and all barriers are lifted. For C, it happened in one of the perfect places of this planet, spare perhaps the Piazza del Campo, in Siena:
No doubt, by tomorrow evening at the latest, I will be crucified by Mordor, but this made me think of that - different setting and context, same type of seminal moment. Draw your own conclusions:
(SRH, Waypoints, Day Four: The Hard Road)
Important things happen, too, Place du Panthéon and this moved me to bits, even if this was not a happy ending. So shamelessly glad it wasn't, by the way:
For (and forgive me for ineptly tinkering with your words) "It’s true, you never forget your first love". And for that man on that random pavement in LA, that will always be you, passerby of the Place des Vosges. The wonder you are, despite anything else: it is perfectly irrelevant.
Jacques Brel says it best, in what is almost a prayer:

OK I have to admit that Cozy Bistro is one the nicest kits we've got, but I am the only one that's bummed that we didn't get a nice two-tile café table for the booths? Because if you've been to an actual French "bistrot" that's where the people sit to have a good view over the room and see who's going in and out, or if Marcel is having an intimate lunch with Chantal in the corner, and weren't those two married... to other people?
The only non-CC option I found is the Dine Out table but hmmm... also the one-tile table in the kit makes me want to pull on the tablecloth all the time LOL

Hey, I just came across your blog, I can't wait to read your writings!
Can I request an HC from general relationship with Sora please? (reader female is good but gn is nice too), have fun and have a great and amazing day 🤎
Absolutely sweetie! ♥️
The two of you met in Radiant Garden becoming fast friends with each other and becoming his keeper and best friend immediately and friends with Goofy and Donald
You joined the trio on their journey and became a great team member and wonderful friend to the three and many people you meet on the journey
After a couple of months you noticed how your feelings for him changed as well as he did but you kept your feelings for each other to yourselves for a long while
Thanks to Goofy and Donald you told each other and soon began dating which was the best thing to happen to both of you and it was amazing being with him
He always likes to take you on secret dates when you're on different worlds from a dinner date at Le Grand Bistrot, a treasure hunting date in Atlantica, and a small date on the Black Pearl, to a ice cream date in the kingdom of Corona, a picnic date in the Hundred Acre Wood, and a date exploring away from everyone else in the Land of Dragons
He likes seeing you interact with all his other friends laughing with you and Baymax, Dancing with Beast, Sparring with Mulan and Shang, and sitting in the flower garden with Pooh and Piglet smiling at you being able to be you without worrying about heartless for at least awhile
He likes to get you small gifts from the worlds you go to whether it's jewellery, clothes, trinkets, books, CD's, movies, anything he can find and afford always surprising you when you are on the gummi ship or when you take a break from traveling around and fighting
He likes having small moments with you no matter what's going on around you the small moments of holding hands, sharing food, sleeping in the same bed, or a small kiss just swells his heart with love and warmth

since my toku account was named specifically, i'll do toku-related items
RULES: Reveal the titles of the documents in your WIP folder and tag as many people as there are documents. Let others ask questions about the ones that interest them and post snippets or explain the contents as you see fit!
because i don't tend to label files outside of work, i'll be giving numbered descriptions instead
a sketch of a pair of oc riders. shoulders are always a difficult point for me, and the added trouble of trying to think of how to work with pauldrons makes this difficult to approach. the designs (not mine) are very fun though!
neon with flowers. iirc, drawn around when episode 29 came out? ready for clean lines, but since i'm not following the show at the moment, it feels a little strange to try and pick up.
wolf orphenoch confrontation. something scribbled after the faiz anniversary movie trailer came out. i really like this character, and mister shinohara made such a nice design, so i definitely want to draw him nicely, but drawing that guy is really difficult!! 💔
skirt biker shiokara. i paused this when i stopped watching kingoh for a while; i'm picking up the linework a little at a time now! ^^
sorrowful grigio regina. sketched after rewatching r/b. she's a kaijuu who is portrayed with such pathos, so i want to try to express even a little bit of that feeling! kaijuu posing is difficult though.
white roses, painted whenever i listen to the shin kr soundtrack. i need to check again to confirm how many k offers in the film, but when i'm done, i want to draw a hongou to accompany them.
another sketch of a pair of toku ocs. the designs (also not mine) are also cute! i need to complete the initial sketch for the other half of the duo and then resolve various design details.
coffee and cake at bistrot jurer. the posing is giving me so much trouble that i'm probably just going to redraw the whole thing again at this point. the faces were fun to draw!
oc villainess monster design draft. since they tend to have some very flashy designs, i figured it could be a fun first try for a monster suit. as usual, suits are difficult 💭
tagging @screentunes @swanlings @bugtransport @gojurt @panicbones @number-one-toku-robot-lover @ankhlesbian @ankhisms @denooo only if you feel like it :)
#i tried to stick to people who follow me here but i hope no one got double tagged 💭#thanks for tagging me poppy ^^#ask games

Hello. I visit Milan during the new year season. Would you have recommendations for anything? I love your taste.
Hey, I am so so sorry for the delay! Of course, I'd love to compile a mini list of places you have to see.
First things first, let's do restaurants:
Gioia
Beefbar
Salumaio di montenapoleone (my favourite! I love sitting outside, even when it's ridiculously cold ahaha)
The Bar at ralph lauren (I love their brunch, but it's usually all booked, so I usually go for a drink there... a nice and unfortunately over expensive aperitivo)
Il solferino
Paper Moon Giardino Caffe
Boeucc
Any Giacomo restaurant. The main one if you want something fancier, the Bistrot one if you want something more down to earth
Sogni
La brisa
Now some restaurants and bars that are less expensive i'd say:
Bar Magenta
Le Biciclette
La vecchia latteria
Bar Dada
Osteria dell'oca giuliva
Combo (it's a hostel, but they have a nice bar/ restaurant that's great to go to if you want to have an aperitivo outside)
Chinese box (also known as one of the bars that face that infamous Paul Mescal gigantic Gucci ad)
Desco
God Save the Food
Yspanico
Caffe degli artisti
Bistrò
Canteen
now, as for places to visit:
Pinacoteca (which is obvious I know, but it's really indispensable)
The Brera region... again, a given, but you can't NOT GO!! If you're there, make sure to check out the Chiesa Del Carmine, which is honestly my favourite
Corso Magenta, I'm biased because I live practically there, but it's one of my favourite zones ever... so many cute bars and shops. Amongst them, RAW, which is THE coolest concept store ever
Verso libreria (and Farini, which is right in front of it)
MAG, my favourite museum in the city... I love their space and I LOVE their curation. In the building there's also LúBar, which is an amazing restaurant for any occasion immaginable
Villa Necchi, Villa Invernizzi... honestly, any of the villas in the casa-museo rotation will do. They're all equally amazing
I could probably come up with other things if you'd like! Lmk! XX

La Bavette, Chicago
Behind the huge Mechandise Mart, the little entrance to this restaurant is allowing to experience e a unique and characteristic dining occasion.
After an anonymous reception, a small door is introducing in a kind of mix of a traditional French bistrot and a vintage jazz club. Low lights, boiserie, red couches are marking the atmosphere.
The menu is typical steakhouse with different premium cuts offered with a set if expected sides. The beef is good and well cooked and the mac'n'cheese very tasty as well as the different potatoes.
Service is nice and professional and wine list quite large even if traditional in terms of offer.
A unique mix of French atmosphere and Chicago stakehouse is making this place a little gem worth the visit.

Our Last Evening - Lecce, Italy
We have had a very lazy day. Spent most of the day lounging around on our beautiful terrace and enjoying the lovely temperatures and breeze. We signed up for a wine and food tasting at 6:00 p.m., so around 4:00 we decided to take a final stroll around Lecce.
We found signs of a car rally going on, didn’t see any rally cars, but there were a few fancy cars out on the plaza:
Fountain at the plaza where the car rally was happening.
No shows going on, but we found one of the local theaters.
Piazza Duomo.
Close-up of the front of the Duomo.
Carvings on the side of the Duomo.(Pictured above and below)
Amazing brass door on the side of the Duomo - the pictures are incredibly detailed.
The Episcopio.
The tourist train in Lecce, Doug was absolutely NOT going to get on the “choo-choo” train for a tour!
Church dome near Porta Napoli.
Beautifully carved balconies on one of the streets.
Coat of arms on the side of an old building, a sign that someone of wealth lived here at one time.
Basilica of St, Croce - the front of this church was stunning and a bit overwhelming - so many things to see!
Our wine and food tasting was suppose to start at 6:00, by 6:20 there was no sign of the owners of the little bistro that the tasting was happening at. Doug went to a little business across the street to see if they knew what was going on. The owner of that business got hold of the wine shop owner, he was stuck in traffic (due to the car rally blocking off the entrance to Lecce). They finally arrived and we had a lovely wine and food tasting experience.
We tasted wines made from grapes grown in the Puglia region - verdeca, negro amaro, and primitivo.
Inside La Strada Del Vino Wine Bistrot, where we had our tasting.
Verdeca, a lovely crisp dry white wine.
Negra Amaro Rose with bruschetta - also an enjoyable wine!
Negra Amaro Red with eggplant appetizer - fruity, dry red wine with a smooth finish. We also had a primitivo wine - which was our favorite. Great way to learn a bit about the local wines.
After our tasting, we spent the evening watching all the nightlife in Lecce. We had a glass of wine and a beer at a cocktail bar - the cocktails looked too dangerous for us! It was fun just taking everything in that was happening on the streets. We met a lady, Leigh, from Atlanta. She was traveling by herself, we chatted over our glass of wine and snacks, it was nice to connect with someone from the states!
We finished up with our last glass of wine for the evening and made it back to our street without any issues.
Street outside our apartment.
Street entryway to our apartment lobby.
Last climb up the 50+ stairs to our place!
We have had an amazing stay in this beautiful apartment. The inside was just as spectacular as the outside. Lecce was a wonderful city to spend time in, so glad that Fabrizio recommended it to us!
Buona notte from Lecce!

#michelinguide #chef #gastronomie #gwendalpoullennec #michelinstar #villedenice #michelin2023 #bibgourmand2023 (à L'Alchimie Nice) https://www.instagram.com/p/CoZqqEqI3NX/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

I don't know exactly how well this translates to every culture actually. When we meet someone up for a coffee in France, it's usually not in a coffee shop à la Starbucks where they mix up different drinks, and definitely have teas and hot cocoas. It's a café or a bistrot (in this case I do believe it's the restaurant turned-café in the afternoon), meaning some sit-down restaurant where you're basically expected to buy either a black coffee or a beer, and possibly to bring your eleven years-old daughter who might ask for an overpriced Coca-Cola.
Being that this is a slightly expensive restaurant, I'm assuming it would be a nice place, the coffee would be nice and they might have nice snacks to buy alongside it. But generally speaking this is a culture I don't like, because a lot of cafés are only attractive if you're desperately looking for a place to sit. It's really just about overpriced drinks with a really limited selection.
One of the kind ladies at the company that seems interested in taking me in for an apprenticeship sent me an e-mail asking if I'd be willing to meet them up for lunch or a coffee in a restaurant where they work next week.
I did what any mature adult would do and phoned my mom asking her what I should do because that seems to me like a really cringe way to meet up for an apprenticeship. Like??? Having to out my dietary restrictions???? I don't even drink coffee, so I have to be that girl who asks for a soda... (...I also have restrictions that apply to those.) My mom confirmed to me that it was really cringe but also pointed out that they probably didn't intend on inviting me, so I should check the price range for the menu.
Needless to say we will be meeting up for a coffee <3
As my ever reassuring mother commented, "if after all of that they don't even want to hire you that'd be fucked up 🤪"
