"NO ONE WAS USING THESE CHARACTERS AT THE TIME I PAINTED THIS" -- THE HANNA-BARBERA UNIVERSE.
PIC(S) INFO: Spotlight on a piece titled "Hanna-Barbera Heroes" (2001), artwork by Alex Ross, and created for the Warner Bros. Studio Stores as a tribute to the most notable superhero types of characters from Hanna-Barbera’s extensive library of cartoon shows.
"No one was using these characters at the time I painted this.  They weren’t even in regular rotation on Cartoon Network at the time. I talked Warner Bros. into letting me do this huge image, even though I was unfamiliar with many of the characters."
-- ALEX ROSS (American comic-book artist/writer/painter) on his "Hanna-Barbera" piece
Now, for one of the greatest roll calls I've ever posted on here, so here goes:
The Blue Falcon and Dyno-Mutt ("Blue Falcon & Dyno-Mutt"); Blip, Jan, Jace, and Space Ghost ("Space Ghost"); Shazzan, Kaboobie, Chuck, and Nancy ("Shazzan"); Tundro, Gleep, Igoo, Gloop, Zok, Tara, King Zandor, and Dorno ("The Herculoids"); Samson and Goliath ("Samson & Goliath"); Jayna, Gleek, Apache Chief, Black Vulcan, Zan, Samurai, Marvin, Wendy, and Wonder Dog ("Super Friends"); Mightor ("The Mighty Mightor"); Avenger and Birdman ("Birdman"); Vapor Man, Meteor Man, and Gravity Girl ("The Galaxy Trio"); Raseem, Bez, Fariik, Prince Turhan, Princess Nida, and Zazuum ("Arabian Knights"); and Jana ("Jana of the Jungle").
Resolution from largest to smallest: 3552x2688, 3476x2400, 3183x1571, & 1280x1222 (2x).

Profiles in Villainy
Mentok The Mind-Taker
The diabolical scientist known as Mentok heralded from an alien world and traveled to earth with aims of conquest.  He utilized numerous doomsday devices and mechanical minions in his efforts; yet his preferred modus-operandi entailed a  mind-control machine that earned him the moniker of ‘Mentok The Mind Taker.’  The heroic Birdman succeeded in foiling Mentok’s various schemes.
Years later, Mentok relinquished his plans for world domination and somehow became a court appointed judge.  Herein he presided over many cases represented by the small claims lawyer, Harvey Birdman.
Tumblr media
Mentok first appeared on an episode of Birman and The Galaxy Trio that aired on October 7th, 1967.   Actor Don Messick provided the voice for Mentok in these initial appearances; whereas actor John Michael Higgins voiced him in the animated series Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law.

Space Ghost Coast to Coast #72: “Sequel” | October 29, 1999 | S06E04
Space Ghost Week continues! Here comes the Ghost!
The final Dorkin/Dyer episode! You can tell, because Birdman is in it. There’s also heavy referencing of 60s and 70s Hanna Barbera trash. They’re sorta the Bill Oakley/Josh Weinstein of Space Ghost; seeking to improve on the show while still delivering it’s as-advertised promise of reveling in Gen-X kitsch. It’s also a straight-up sequel to the Lawsuit episode, playing with the notion of non-linear continuity. Moral Orel, eat your heart out.
This episode memorably begins with Space Ghost in Spacecatraz prison (not to be confused with Spacecataz), fighting with the guard over what to put on television. Space Ghost wants to watch his own show so he can see who his replacement is (spoilers: it’s Birdman). The guard wants to watch the Dilly Sisters. Who doesn’t? Space Ghost can’t cotton to this, so he escapes to whoop Birdman’s ass. Hey, good luck with that.
As far as Hanna Barbera references go: this one depicts Gravity Girl from the Galaxy Trio as Birdman’s ex. It also features a visit to the Herculoids planet when Space Ghost escapes prison and traverses back to the Ghost Planet. One of the Herculoids kids got a Meatwad voice! Hey! Did you know that Space Ghost actually did cross-over with Herculoids on the short-lived 1980s package series Space Stars? It’s true! It happened! He even met Atro from the Jetsons a couple times!
The guests are Captain & Tennille, known for their hit “Love Will keep Us Together”, a popular needledrop in movies and shows made by Boomers. Zorak lets us all know that The Captain’s real name is Daryl Dragon, an actual fact that I am pretty sure I learned from this episode first. It’s an oft-repeated bit of trivia. At the end of the episode they perform their other hit “Muskrat Love”, which brings the house down and puts an end to the big brawl that erupted when Space Ghost shows up. After the credits James Kirkonnel awakens from a nightmare, calling back Curses!

46/?? Childhood TV Shows You Should Watch
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Title: Birdman
Seasons: 1
Episodes: 20
Run Time: 30 Mins
Original Air Date: September 9, 1967 - January 20, 1968
Note: The Galaxy Trio was a segment in between 2 Birdman segments but to be honest I don't remember that show at all so I'm not going to add it.
Synopsis:
Birdman is an ordinary human who has been endowed by the sun god Ra with the ability to shoot solar rays from his fists and project quasi-solid "solar shields" to defend himself against attacks. After he had acquired his avian—and other—powers, he was recruited by a top-secret government agency, Inter-Nation Security, and now works full-time fighting crime, assisted by his pet eagle, who responds to the name of Avenger. In addition to the abilities he received from Ra, Birdman also possesses the power of flight, thanks to the giant wings that sprout from his back. His sole weakness is that he has to recharge his superhuman powers periodically, through exposure either to the sun's rays or to a comparable source of heat and/or light.
My Rating: 8/10
My Reasoning:
As far as superheroes go, I always found Birdman kind of interesting. I think because I always liked Egyptian mythology and the fact that he got his powers from Ra was intriguing. However, I don't necessarily think it's the best show out there. Nor, do I think he's the best superhero ever. Obviously, with it being short episodes and stuff there are a lot of plot holes and things I think. It's not really a big deal though, to be honest.
I certainly think it's entertaining and worth watching. I honestly don't remember the Galaxy Trio segment so I can't speak on that part haha.
