A guilty pleasure of sorts (I mean, lets be honest - many people would argue that any Uday Chopra movie that you don't outright hate - aside from maybe Dhoom - is nothing more than a guilty pleasure). I've enjoyed this movie since the first time I saw it - the reuniting of the Mohabbatein duo (Jimmy Sheirgill/Uday Chopra) plus the guest appearance of another Mohabbatein 'star' (Shamita Shetty), alongside Sanjana (aka Tulip Joshi) and Bipasha Basu ... what a random starcast, looking back at it now.
But, at the time, it resulted in a lot of fun, some entertaining songs, the typical rom/com romantic drama story of man in love with girl who is due to marry someone else - but in this case, both of our mains are complete oafs and don't realize the feelings they have for each other. Or, as we find out later, they maybe have realized - they're just too dense to tell the other person (or anyone else, even - aside from him telling his roommate, who literally hauls her ass over to help him out, only for him to back out of his plan because someone cries) and would therefore rather ruin (okay, maybe not that - Jimmy's character didn't seem like he was a bad person, but he was so awfully close to becoming Love Aaj Kal's - the first one, that is - Rahul Khanna; instead he lucks out and just ends up becoming KKHH's Salman Khan) their lives.
This possibly may have been the start of "Jimmy doesn't get the girl," an overarching theme of many of Jimmy's many movies that seemed to reach it's peak in the Tanu Weds Manu series - where he not only initially gets left behind by Kangna, but then later finds himself again left behind by not only Kangna, but also Kangna's lookalike Kangna.
But yeah, it starts here when he gets engaged to a girl who loves, but ignores said love, her best friend. That's just a recipe for disaster, and as worst case plays out for him, you just wonder if maybe something will work out with him and Sanju's friend/roommate (likely no longer a roommate). Because he's nice enough to deserve something good.
Of course, life doesn't give a shit about that - if anything, it probably means he's just destined to a lifetime of sadness. But that's a story for another never.
I really like this movie, even after repeated rewatches.

Raaz (2002) directed by Vikram Bhatt
English title: Secret genre: horror, thriller age Rating: 15+ duration: 2h 14m country: India language: Hindi screenplay: Mahesh Bhatt, Girish Dhamija
cast: Bipasha Basu, Dino Morea, Malini Sharma, Ashutosh Rana
plot summary: a married couple, Aditya & Sanjana Dhanraj, take a holiday to a remote hill station to revive their marriage. however, they soon encounter a haunting presence from the past that threatens to tear them apart.
Tumblr media
I still remember Raaz as one of the creepiest movies I watched when I was a teen! right from the get-go, the atmosphere is spine-tingling. the old house, the fog-covered hills, and the eerie music had my heart racing like I’d just chugged a gallon of espresso! seriously, I felt like I was living it with the characters, jumping at every spooky moment. it was like a haunted house ride, minus the ticket price! Bipasha Basu’s character is super relatable; her fear and confusion as the ghostly events unfold really pulled me in. she plays the role of a woman just trying to make sense of this nightmare, and I was totally rooting for her. and let’s not forget Dino Morea, who nails the terrified husband trying to protect her. their chemistry felt genuine (which makes sense since they were dating in real life!), but you could really see it slowly unravel thanks to the haunting. I was practically shouting at the screen, “you guys can make it work! just talk it out!” the minor characters added to the suspense too, especially that mysterious old woman who definitely knows more than she’s letting on. you know the type—always lurking around, giving you that “I know something you don’t” vibe. it’s like she’s the keeper of all the juicy secrets, and I was there for it! emotionally, Raaz had me switching between curiosity and fear, especially as the secrets slowly came out. I barely felt the length of the movie—it was that gripping! every twist kept me guessing, making this one of the few horror movies that truly held my attention from start to finish. I was totally hooked the entire time, like a fish on a line, flopping around for more. can we talk about the songs? they’re catchy and stick in my head! there were moments I found myself wishing I could be in Bipasha’s shoes, being serenaded by a man like Dino, lol! it’s that perfect blend of romance and horror that gives me butterflies and chills all at once. while it does have some typical horror tropes, Raaz manages to elevate itself above the average ghost story. the cinematography is top-notch, and the music perfectly complements the haunting visuals. it’s like a love letter to classic horror films with a Bollywood twist! overall, if you're in the mood for a horror flick that knows how to mix scares with a little bit of romance and a whole lot of suspense, Raaz is definitely worth a watch. just don’t forget to turn on the lights afterward!

The problem, I think - well, no; there's a million problems, but a big one - is that they tried to script something that would combine religion/spirituality and science (think like Ram Setu, but somehow worse), but decided that the best way to accomplish this was: mumbo-jumbo pseudo-science (which, fine, it has to be sorta that way cuz there's no real science that can explain this) being told to us by an essentially unethical scientist ('Paagal'? Really?; not to mention, her constantly forcing Varun into her experiments and even trying to bribe him into doing performing an "experiment"), over-the-top and excessive use of green screen and crappy computer graphics, slow-mo fights that make Race 3 look good, bad songs, and an poorly-flowing story that introduced to to the concept of force diads well before Star Wars Episode IX.
Suniel Shetty's story makes no sense - though, I guess, you don't really need a story to be bad. Bad folks just be bad because they can. Sanjay Dutt as the "prayers are cool" man-turned-weird experiment/love interest also has an pretty random, confusing, and/or unexplained story. The hypnotic rat ... well, there's a hypnotic rat. And a white girl who speaks in Hindi, before being hypnotized by the rat and, in a particularly egregious green screen-moment, poor-man's Spider-Man crawl's up a wall (with only her hands; I don't think her feet ever touch the wall) and then falls to her death - but at least she's able to poorly explain the internet to us first. Isha Koppikar has literally no role, but she randomly turns into a like - a yelly vampire? or something before quickly being dispatched of. Bipasha Basu is supposed to be scientist, but is busy chasing down 'false prophets' in hopes of finding the 'real one' (which she does, of course) - and then immediately both falls in love with him (except his hair, she has major issues with his hair, probably cuz it is longer than hers) and decides to make him the focus of her "experiment" (what exactly is this experiment anyways?, cuz I don't think "I followed this guy around and recorded him sitting around" really qualifies for anything, and the "I made a rat turn into a demon" thing is definitely not going to get her a Nobel Prize, no matter what she thinks). And then at the end, he's just like "this is my journey now" and sends her away.
We are told that the healer-by-day Dutt is also a bouncer-by-night, which is clearly thrown in only to get in a pointless, and bad, item song - because that is irrelevant to everything the rest of the movie.
But, really, even with everything - it is the crazy amount of green screen action that really just makes this a painful affair. Whatever they were trying to do with the story - which essentially seems to amount to nothing more than "evil is loud, but good will always win" - is completely lost as the poorly told story is accompanied by even poorer filming and graphics. Also, Suniel Shetty's random "sounding like a car" and Sanjay's father making ... well, whatever the hell that sound was when he disappears.
Trying to mix spirituality with science is difficult, but to use completely fake science to do it just seems dumb. This idea deserves more planning and better execution - and much, much less green screen (and a much less dumb climax sequence). I mean, they even give us a bit of Matrix, of course, and even a pre-Brahmastra fire-throwing bit, and cap it off with a "Sanjay rips of one of the Suneil clone's arm and leg." It's just completely random, and not in a good way. And then the movie just ends, just like that.
There's really nothing redeemable about this movie.
