The Future of Biomechanical Beings: How Close Are We to This Cyberpunk Reality?
In the realm of cyberpunk fiction, biomechanical beings have long captivated our imagination. From synthetic humans with the ability to blend in seamlessly among us to cybernetically enhanced individuals, these futuristic concepts challenge our understanding of humanity, technology, and the very essence of life. But as we look to the horizon, one can't help but wonder: how close are we to turning these fictional stories into our reality? Let's embark on a journey through some iconic cyberpunk references and juxtapose them with the current state of technology.
Ghost in the Shell (Anime & Film) Reference: Major Motoko Kusanagi, a synthetic "full-body prosthesis" augmented-cybernetic human, is a key figure in Masamune Shirow's world of "Ghost in the Shell". Her body is entirely artificial, while her "ghost" or soul remains distinctly human. Real Tech: Currently, we have prosthetic limbs that can be controlled by neural signals. While full-body prostheses seem distant, advancements in neural interfaces and robotics suggest we may witness rudimentary versions within a few decades.
Blade Runner (Film & Book) Reference: The Replicants, bioengineered beings designed by Tyrell Corporation, are almost indistinguishable from humans and are designed for various roles, from combat to entertainment. Real Tech: Bioprinting organs and tissues is an emerging field. While replicants, in their entirety, are far off, certain aspects like printing individual organs could become a reality within the next two decades.
Neuromancer (Book) Reference: William Gibson's seminal novel introduced the idea of "jacking into the matrix" and using neural interfaces to interact with a digital reality. Real Tech: With companies like Neuralink working on brain-computer interfaces, it might not be too long before we see early versions of this technology. Some experts believe that rudimentary neural interfaces could be available within the next 10-20 years.
Alita: Battle Angel (Film & Manga) Reference: Alita is a cyborg with a human brain but a completely mechanical body, showcasing advanced combat capabilities and agility. Real Tech: Advanced robotics and exoskeletons are making rapid progress. Full-body replacements like Alita remain in the realm of fiction, but components, such as limbs with enhanced strength or agility, could emerge in the next 30 years.
Akira (Anime & Manga) Reference: Neo-Tokyo, a city filled with technological marvels and cybernetic enhancements, shows a dystopian future where biomechanical beings play a significant role. Real Tech: The urban landscape depicted in Akira resonates with our current trajectory of smart cities. As for biomechanical beings, we're still in the early stages of merging man and machine seamlessly.
Conclusion: While the cyberpunk genre offers a fascinating, albeit sometimes dystopian, view of the future, it serves as an inspiration for innovators and scientists. Though we might not see full-body biomechanical beings anytime soon, the integration of biology and mechanics is an inevitable part of our future. Judging by the current pace of technology, it wouldn't be too audacious to claim that we might witness the inception of some of these concepts within our lifetime. The line between man and machine continues to blur, and with it, we edge closer to our cyberpunk future.

people who work/study in quantitative bio-adjacent fields, rise up. computational neuroscience where you get to see someone's thoughts in feelings in graph form??? so cool. biophysics where you can pass blood plasma through an electric field to determine whether a patient has cancer or not?? unbelievable. biomedical engineering where you can literally build a device to pump someone's heart and be the difference between their life and death??? oh my god. disease modelling, being able to predict AND prevent communities being affected by disease on a large scale through your analysis of data??? i love science

The Only Thing I Know for Real (Maniac Agenda Mix):
This song is about Jetstream Sam and how disillusioned he has become to fighting, especially after losing to Senator Armstrong. Sam only knows how to kill and has no reason why he's killing. It mirrors Raiden (the main character) who fights people for justice and to protect the weak, Sam fights just because.
Every single boss fight in Metal Gear Rising is all instrumental until you hit "critical" points in the fight, when the vocals come in. Not only does it make the scene feel even more epic, the lyrics apply to both the boss being fought AND the game's protagonist, Raiden. In this case, it's about their loss of identity, feeling that they have to fight all the time and sometimes that's all there is to them, and yet when the thrill of the battle is over their doubts and inner conflict still remains. Sam (the boss you fight) actually showed up and fought you at the beginning of the game, a battle you are scripted to lose. There are no lyrics during this fight, because Raiden isn't at a point where he can face up to him yet; they don't understand each other, and Sam even tells Raiden that he denies his weapon its purpose, because the sword Sam uses is a family heirloom destined to bring justice until he was misguided/strayed off the path he thought he'd be on. Their conflict starts at this point and it rises until you finally fight Sam as the second to last boss. There is also a moment where Raiden disarms Sam, but the fight goes on. The lyrics cut off abruptly in this moment, and they only continue when Sam picks his sword up again. People theorize this is because without his sword, this whole conflict of whether he's using his weapon for what it was meant to or what he thought he would disappears (since he's no longer using it), and maybe if he would stop fighting or if he tried to follow his ideals again and not just fight for the sake of fighting, he'd resolve those doubts. We'll never know because he does die 😔 but as every other boss in MGR, he parallels Raiden, maybe the most aside from the final boss (in my opinion lol) & the way the soundtrack reflects this, as well as characterizes him greatly, AND generally goes hard as hell is honestly amazing. Play MGR yall

I saw @shikariiin 's MLP AU and I had to do my own take on it. I first learned how to draw from pony art from Tumblr all the way back in ~2013 and couldn't pass up the chance to mash my fandoms together.
James, of course, had to take up half a page to himself because he is fabulous (and I love drawing Pegasi).
It's a toss up between James and Henry being my favorites on here. I really love both.
Random Info I came up with while I spent way too long drawing this under more.
Percy - A shy and nervous earth pony. Has a talent for communicating, but took his cutie mark more seriously and became a mail pony instead.
Thomas- A bold brash and cheeky earth pony who never lets his earth pony status hold him back. He joined the railroad because he wants to see the world and go everywhere. He can be nervous but is talented at his job. His cutiemark represents his ability to shunt (being strong) and being a ray of sunshine in people's lives, being infectious with joy, warming people like the sun.
Gordon - A strong and ill mannered Earth Pony. He's jaded by the world, and angry at the hand that he has dealt by being born an earth pony. He believes that railroad work should be for Earth Ponies as it relies on physical strength (This is probably based in the IDW post G4 era of comics where bad feeling was being stirred up between different pony classes). This means that James and himself but heads over everything because he thinks James could do better than railroad work. Gordon's cutiemark represents his need for perfection and obsession over small details. Gordon can't imagine anything worse than letting other people down by being late.
Henry - A shy unicorn who suffers from magic fatigue. He earned his cutiemark by casting a plant based magic spell that backfired and caused him to grow flowers and vines permanently in his mane. This means most of his magic is dedicated to keeping these magical plants alive, and he has little to spare to normal spell casting. The flowers in his mane represent his mood and his health. If he suffers magic fatigue, they begin to wilt in his mane. He works on the railroad because he can't cast magic constantly enough to get a unicorn magic based job.
The Flying Scotsman - A pegasi (I will draw him at some point). Lucked out genetically to be a pegasi born to a family of earth ponies. This means that he isn't as strong of a flyer as other pegasi, as his bones aren't hollow, but this doesn't stop Gordon being resentful of him. Also works on the railroad as he is physically strong, and has more earth pony traits than Pegasi ones.
Edward - Works as a navigator for the railroad. He does the jobs that require magic to do. I was thinking very Fluttershy with his cutie mark. It represents his softness and kindness. He never lets anything the others say get to him.
James - Drives Gordon insane. He's the only Pegasi in the team and likes to show off because he feels that it makes him more splendid and attractive than the others. He takes any opportunity to preen and show himself off. He loves to insult the others and then fly up to where they can't get him. Henry has at least once lost his temper with him and pulled him back down to earth only to deeply regret it when he feels ill for the rest of the day.
James' talent is for seeing fine details, but the others insist that it's a mirror because his only talent is bragging about his looks.
They do this Job \/

Retro_G is back with another art cover for the Sega Genesis game "Beast Wrestler". In the story mode the player uses bio-engineered monsters to compete against other "Dragon Warriors" in wrestling competitions. This was a great concept back in it's day. Someone should reinvent this game with today's tech. Like comment and subscribe! THX.

EDIT: yeah the Luxtorpeda design changed since then 💀 I realized she didn't fit RWS lore so she's a single character named Luxtorpeda, and the driver names are non-canon now (they're still the Polish driver and the other driver)

YAYAYAY!!!!! My final funguary guys!!
ANT (Acidity Near Thresholds; xe/xer, they/them) finally gets a redesign!
Oops ANT got molded :[ don't worry, they're ok! This is for the icing sugar fungus prompt.
Tox/The Moldy (it/its, ze/zir), for the final magic mushroom prompt. I chose to interpret it as a free space, so this guy is based on moldy dwarf bulborbs from Pikmin 4 :D Also Tox is responsible for ANT being toxified lol
Also funguary has been SO MUCH FUN and it's the first art month thing I've managed to complete! (even though i skipped some prompts)
