someone put the idea of Jordan finally listening to the voice mail Billy left Spencer next episode in my head and i can’t stop thinking about it. How do you think he’ll react to it and do you think it will hurt his football performance?
I hate this idea of Spencer doing that. I could maybe see it accidentally happening if he were drunk. But I don't think Spencer would voluntarily do this.
Jordan won't react to it well. I also think there's a chance he's kinda resigned to it. So maybe he won't even be surprised. Sadly.
What Billy said to Spencer was incredibly special and should really stay between them only.

I was definitely one of the people making fun of the fact that Jordan didn't react to Billy's death at all and it was terrible acting but I was on my grief episodes rewatch and yeah the acting was still trash but you also realize that nobody fucking asked him. Like he was failed when it came to support through his grief real bad. He wasn't supported properly. Nobody tried to get him to actually stop with the distractions and actually get him to face it. Nobody asked him or got him to see what he was doing was all in his grief. He was just enabled in his own behavior. Spencer's support was the opposite. Nobody was enabling him in his own distraction and deflection. They wouldn't let him. Spencer's mom, Dillon, Coop and therapist were not having it. Saw it for what it was, called it unhealthy, said he was deflecting and grabbed him by the neck. Jordan was deflecting and distracting exactly like Spencer but because his way of distracting himself was so mundane and harmless like tryna fix a table/fridge/open a box, it was easier for the ones around him to be like okay well let's let him just do that and not talk about it. Don't ask him. Let him keep busy. If he wants to distract himself with all of that irrelevant and stupid shit, let's leave him to it. He was acting like what he needs right now is help with those every day things and that's how you're helping him. But really you're just helping him with the distraction. Nobody actually helped him IN HIS GRIEF. They just enabled his distractions. He was actively just running from his pain. By the end of it, he was left unhealed. He wasn't feeling better, he wasn't being helped, he had a lot of pain he was holding onto by himself and only shared it when he finally got to be alone with Spencer. He did not face or deal with a damn thing. That's why he was the LAST ONE, Jordan was the unsupported one.

I'm still so confused as to why Patience was at Billy's funeral. She didn't even know him, let alone have interactions with him either.

Trying to make it seem like the show is forgetting that Olivia and Jordan lost their father and putting the focus on Spencer is simply a tale of misinterpretation on your part tbh. Because since he died them and Laura have had moments in each other’s episodes where they think about, reminisce or find a new breakthrough with regards to Billy. The show isn’t forgetting about their grief. Their trying to show that because they dealt with their grief in a healthy way the three of them are on the path to healing which is why his death seems easier now. Spencer didn’t handle his grief well. It festered for these last couple episodes. That’s the difference. Laura, Liv and Jordan aren’t supposed to be bawling on their knees for 5 episodes straight. They’re healing little by little and they’ve actively showed that whether it’s through Olivia about to get back into dance, Jordan assuming a leadership role on the team or Laura starting to journal and not being a mother den to the girls anymore. Y’all watch tv with your ass clearly.

This is an incredibly subjective question about acting. But for aa, what do you think is each actors strongest acting moments on the show for their characters and do you think each actor is better with lighter or heavy material or both? I only ask because opinions on acting is such a subjective thing, and you always have quite thoughtful opinions on the show. One person can see incredible where others see undetwhelming and vice versa. So it really is down to the audience and who they gravitate to...
Thanks for your patience waiting for a response.
Love that you pointed out the subjectivity off the bat. Big fan.
I guess I'll do the Vortex + Taye? Minus Hunter.
Taye is good at everything. He's funny and goofy and then really remarkable with the drama, too. None of this is a shock. I'm so happy he was with the show so long. And it never felt like stunt casting or "FEATURING TAYE DIGGS" or anything. He just kinda meshed in with everyone else and seemed genuinely passionate about the project. I think his confession of his affair and supplicating himself before his family and team is probably the best of his best. I also found him delightful in his birthday episode.
I think Daniel is secretly and not-so-secretly super funny. His deadpan dry delivery gets me every time. And this might be a hot take, but I appreciate his humor more than his serious stuff. Although he's great at that, too. His shining comical moment, to me, was when Frausto misses his shot at pool and demands that Spencer not say a single word. And Spencer fires back with, "How about two? You suck." Also for the serious stuff, his whole arc after Billy died was really, really great.
Bre-Z is also really funny. Especially when she's not the focus in a scene and just kind of ribbing and playing off others. She's a natural at that. I appreciate her humor above her drama. But she shined in her arcs with wrestling with her queerness and her relationship with Shawn in s1. And speaking of Billy's bday party, I really loved her there. Anytime she's sincere, doesn't take herself or anyone else too seriously, and is not holding back is just delightful.
Greta shines in the drama. Her s2 and s4 arcs were so powerful, and you can tell she left everything in the scene. I do think she's getting more opportunities to showcase her comedic chops, which has been very fun. Because of jordayla, Layla is a lighter character.
Sam also shines in the drama. S3 relapse storyline and her arc after Billy's death was a fantastic showcase of her talent. She's also very funny, especially with Mike.
Mike is obviously better with the humor than the drama. But following his story, he hasn't really been given an opportunity to really lean into the drama. And I'll say this again and again, but his work with his grieving arc was so well done. It was not loud, but you could tell he was in pain and frustrated and sad and it was all very true-to-life for some people.
Cody is a sleeper talent. I think he's better at drama than humor. And while he's excelled in his own dramatic storylines, I was most affected by his confrontation with JJ in 5x19. He's just really, really good. He's a good comedic straight man with Hunter, Mike, and Bre-Z, too.
Chelsea is super funny. Her delivery of "well I love cereal, bitches, and I guess we're all feeling ourselves" is great. Anything she mutters under her breath is fantastic. I think she's better at humor than drama. Though I thought her expressing her exhaustion with Coop was actually really well done.
As stated above, just my opinion. And if I revisit scenes in the future or think more on it, my thoughts on everyone might change. I just provided scenes that I could easily recall and have stuck with me.

I have nothing but grace and sympathy for Spencer following Billy's death. Zero criticism.
I think Spencer's doing his best with the limited coping tools he has - he's only 19. He is clearly avoiding feeling his emotions and instead, is trying to rationalize them. But, he is emotionally regulating just enough to avoid dumping on Olivia & others who are also grieving. He must be exhausted.
His grief is unique because there's a lot of emotions packed in there. It's not just the obvious sadness and guilt. I see fear, helplessness, uncertainty, despair, constant anxiety... We're seeing him cycle through fight-flight-freeze-fawn responses.
Of course he's masking it with anger - it's his default defense mechanism from childhood. His anger makes him feel strong & gives him a sense of control. Spencer needs new tools to get through this. Esp now that he can't rely on Billy or Olivia like he has in the past... I'm relieved to see Dr. Spears.
I'm interested in seeing how they tell this story. Hopefully, the viewers who are quick to judge & criticize Spencer can learn to empathize with ppl in their lives who struggle similarly.

The audience knows how kind Laura is for letting those girls live there and she leaves so to have the girls behave that way when she needs them for once, imma need all the girls to get the fuck out of Laura and Olivia’s house.

fuck layla and patience fr
The lack of compassion for both Laura and Olivia in their own home was just fucking heartbreaking. They literally called a meeting asking for Olivia to understand their issues with the mourning that’s going on in the Baker home after Billy died and how they need to be accommodating to them and their issues. In a home that don’t belong to them. They feel Laura missing her husband and she wanting company, in a time of need is just not gonna fly. Laura not wanting to be alone right now, which they all understand but for some reason just don’t care. While Laura is the kind of person who would never let anyone be alone, she’s always bringing everybody into her home when they are going through something but the second the tables are turned, that’s what she’s met with. My brain can’t even comprehend how anyone could be that fucking heartless to someones situation as a person but especially after everything they’ve done for you specifically. To have the people she’s been so accommodating to be that UNSYMPATHIC to her when she needs them is heartbreaking. Olivia and Laura are the ones that have to be accommodating in their own home. While they mourn. They had to be accommodating to the same fucking people they have extended their own kindness too. It don’t reverse and they get back the kindness they give back, it’s a one way street clearly. They are in pain and dealing with a loss and they have to give more. Like they are two people who give so much that people feel ENTITLED to their kindness and generosity like it’s their fucking right.
Olivia doesn’t have friends, she has fucking parasites.

Other than Spencer and Liv's individual growth and getting back together when they never should've broken up in the first place, literally nothing happened in terms of moving the story forward in S5, pretty much every sl was a repeat from S3. They could've used that number of episodes to move the story forward but chose to go in circles for no reason was stupid and to focus on sl's and characters that don't even matter was the worst decision. Even Billy dying didn't do anything bc Taye just wanted to leave.
