2018 is swiftly turning into the year that I see any and all things Miyazaki.  Somehow, his entire catalog of post-Lupin Wolf output seems to continually find its way to my area, and me being the fan and the completest that I am, I’m naturally making every attempt that I can to see them all.  The latest screening was for Porco Rosso, one of Miyazaki’s films that has been on my radar for years but continually slips by me.

Porco Rosso (Michael Keaton) is a World War I flying ace whom, prior to being cursed via transformation into a human-sized pig, was the famous fighter pilot Marco Rossolini.  While relaxing in his secret hideout, he is alerted to a hostage situation involving a gang of airbone pirates and a ferry carrying students from a local girl’s school.  Springing into action, he defeats the pirates and rescues the young girls, raising the ire of the defeated pirates.  In a fit of desperation, the pirates hire Donald Curtis (Cary Elwes) to exact their revenge.  Curtis finds himself enamored by Madame Gina (Susan Egan), the proprietor of the pirate hotel, but not distracted enough to fail in damaging Porco’s plane during a surprise attack.  Porco is forced to take his damaged plane to Milan, despite his fugitive status in Italy, in order to connect with his mechanic Piccolo (David Ogden Stiers).  While catching up with Piccolo, Porco begins to have reservations about getting his plane fixed in Milan, as Piccolo’s sons have all left home seeking work during the Great Depression.  Porco’s worries are slowly eradicated, however, as Piccolo’s granddaughter Fio (Kimberly Williams-Paisley) proves herself to be more than capable in the role of ace-mechanic.  With plane and mechanic in tow, Porco sets off to redeem himself via a battle with Curtis in hopes of being able to find a new life in the rapidly changing times.

When compared side by side to some of the other Miyazaki output, Porco Rosso seems to be a bit of an outlier.  Traces of the fantasy elements often found in his film are still there (the majority via the pig transformation lore), but this film seems more like a practice in homage to an era that has significance or meaning to Miyazaki.  Most of the care that is put into development of the lore or creation of new creatures is instead put into the details of the aircraft, how they operate, and how they interact with one another during their dogfights.  Many nods are given to the countries involved in the conflict at the time, with slight stylistic alterations made to make the story fit into the Miyazaki canon.

The story also takes on a slightly different tone in the areas of men/women dynamics and politics as well.  Outside of Princess Mononoke, it seems that Miyazaki rarely takes such clearly defined stances or sticks to such rigid ‘norms’ as he does in Porco Rosso.  The misogynist tone set by Porco, especially in his interactions with Fio, comes off as a bit jarring considering that it is part of a Miyazaki project... perhaps some of the subtlety may have been lost in translation from sub to dub, but the dub plays a bit off-putting in regards to some of the ‘humor’ conveyed between Porco and Fio.  There also seems to be clear feelings behind the mentions of political ideologies, particularly fascism, which is the butt of a pretty witty joke.

Overall, while not my favorite of the Miyazaki films I’ve seen thus far (to be fair, I’m basing this judgement on a single viewing), it still carries the spirit and awe that is found in all Miyazaki projects.  The slightly unique setting and story style do not divert from the recognizable Studio Ghibli qualities that permeate his work, which in some ways, makes this one of the most unique pieces of Miyazaki work.
