Karni Mata Temple – A Rat Temple of its Own Kind in Deshnok
Tumblr media
Karni Mata Temple also known as the Rat Temple is a unique and intriguing Hindu temple located in Deshnoke, a small town in the Bikaner district of Rajasthan, India. This temple is renowned for its resident population of rats, considered sacred and worshipped by the devotees who visit the temple. The temple's history, significance, and the unusual aspect of rat worship make it a fascinating destination for tourists and pilgrims alike.
History: The history of Karni Mata Temple dates back to the 15th century when it was originally dedicated to Karni Mata, a revered sage and mystic believed to be an incarnation of the goddess Durga. Karni Mata, born in 1387, was known for her miraculous powers and her selfless devotion to the welfare of society. Legends surround her, recounting tales of her divine interventions and compassionate acts. According to one popular legend, Karni Mata requested Yama, the god of death, to revive the son of a grieving storyteller. When Yama refused, Karni Mata, displaying her divine powers, brought the child back to life. However, she transformed him into a rat, making him and his descendants the first members of the rat population in the temple.
Significance: The primary specialty of Karni Mata Temple lies in its unique worship of rats, which are considered to be the incarnations of Karni Mata and her devotees. The temple is home to thousands of rats, and devotees believe that spotting a white rat, which is rare among the predominantly black rats, is especially auspicious. The rats, also known as "kabbas," are fed and cared for by the temple priests and devotees. Pilgrims visiting the temple often offer food, grains, and milk to these rats, considering it an act of devotion and seeking blessings from Karni Mata. The rats freely roam around the temple complex, and it is believed that if a devotee accidentally steps on a rat, they must make a gold or silver rat as a form of penance. The significance of rat worship in Karni Mata Temple is rooted in the belief that these rodents carry the souls of the devotees. It is believed that after death, the souls of Karni Mata's followers are reincarnated as rats until they are ready to be reborn as humans.
As a Tourist Attraction: Karni Mata Temple has gained international fame and is a major tourist attraction for those seeking unique and offbeat experiences. The temple's distinct feature of rat worship sets it apart from other Hindu temples and draws curious travelers from around the world. Tourists visiting the temple can witness the surreal sight of thousands of rats freely moving about the temple complex. The atmosphere is both fascinating and eerie, as the rodents are considered sacred and are treated with reverence by the visitors.
The architecture of the temple is another aspect that attracts tourists. Built in traditional Nagar style of temple architecture, the temple features intricately carved marble panels, silver doors, and a stunning facade. The inner sanctum, where the idol of Karni Mata is enshrined, is adorned with colorful decorations and offerings from devotees.
The town of Deshnoke, where the temple is located, offers a glimpse into traditional Rajasthani culture and architecture. Tourists can explore the narrow lanes, visit local markets, and experience the vibrant colors and flavors of Rajasthan.
Challenges and Controversies: While Karni Mata Temple is a popular tourist destination, it has faced challenges and controversies over the years. The presence of a large number of rats poses hygiene concerns, and despite efforts to maintain cleanliness, the temple has been criticized for its unhygienic conditions. Animal rights activists have raised concerns about the well-being of the rats and the ethical implications of keeping them in captivity. However, temple authorities argue that the rats are considered sacred and are well-cared for, with regular feeding and veterinary attention. Controversies also surround the practice of rat worship itself, with some questioning the rationale behind considering these rodents as carriers of human souls. Despite these debates, the temple continues to attract a steady stream of visitors who are fascinated by its cultural and religious significance.
Festivals and Celebrations: Karni Mata Temple is a hub of festivities, especially during the annual Karni Mata Fair held in the Hindu month of Chaitra (March-April). The fair attracts a large number of devotees and tourists who come to witness the grand celebrations. The temple is adorned with lights, decorations, and a lively atmosphere prevails throughout the town. During the fair, traditional folk performances, music, and dance add to the cultural vibrancy of the event. Pilgrims undertake long journeys to seek the blessings of Karni Mata and participate in the rituals and ceremonies held during the fair.
Preservation and Promotion: Recognizing the historical and cultural significance of Karni Mata Temple, efforts have been made to preserve and promote this unique religious site. Government initiatives, along with contributions from devotees and well-wishers, have been directed towards maintaining the temple's infrastructure, ensuring cleanliness, and addressing the concerns related to the welfare of the rats. Tourism promotion has also played a role in bringing attention to Karni Mata Temple. The Rajasthan tourism board actively markets the temple as a must-visit destination for those seeking an authentic and unconventional experience in the state.
In conclusion, Karni Mata Temple, with its fascinating history, distinctive rat worship, and architectural beauty, stands as a unique religious and cultural landmark in the heart of Rajasthan. Its significance extends beyond the boundaries of traditional religious practices, attracting tourists and pilgrims who are drawn to the mystique surrounding the temple. While controversies persist, the temple continues to thrive as a symbol of devotion, resilience, and cultural richness. Whether one visits for spiritual reasons or out of sheer curiosity, Karni Mata Temple offers an unforgettable and thought-provoking experience that lingers in the hearts and minds of those who make the journey to Deshnoke. Rajasthan tour packages especially Bikaner tour packages by Optima Travels, offer opportunity to visit Karni Mata (Rat)  Temple.

Camel Country: Bikaner
Before the 15th century, when the Rajputs took control of the region and gave it its current name, the city of Bikaner was formerly known by the name Jangladesh. Rao Bika, a Rajput king, is credited with erecting this building, which has a history dating back to the year 1486. In the city of Bikaner, which was one of the first cities to be founded, red sandstone was utilized in the construction of palaces and forts that have stood the test of time. These structures are still standing today. The magnificence of Bikaner's historical past is still present today in the city. "Camel country" is the name given to the area that surrounds the city due to the fact that it is home to some of the best riding camels in the world.
Nevertheless, only bhujia is more well-known than the papad that is served in Bikaner, and the Laxmi Niwas Palace is the only restaurant in the state that knows how to serve the papad in the most authentic manner. The cuisine known as papad ki sabzi has become synonymous with the entire state.

Most of us think Rajasthan is all about ‘Pink City’ Jaipur, ‘Blue City’ Jodhpur, ‘Lake City’ Udaipur or ‘Golden City’ Jaisalmer. Bikaner does not get the spotlight as compared to the other places. But this city has its beauty. Splendid Junagarh Fort, which was constructed over a period of four centuries, the famous Karni Mata Temple (popularly known as Rat Temple), where thousands of rats are roaming all over the temple premises, or the National Research Centre for Camel where one can see every detail about a camel, one can’t simply neglect the attraction of this city. Bikaner is an underrated jewel of Rajasthan.
Places to Visit in Bikaner (Bikaner Sightseeing)
Junagarh Fort: This fort is different from the other forts in Rajasthan. You may observe that other forts are built on the top of a hill. But this majestic fort is built on ground level. It took nearly 350 years to complete. Junagarh Fort is a blend of Rajput, Gujrati, Mughal and Western architecture. The combination of red sandstone and white marble make this one stunning. Moreover, intricate stone carving enhances the gorgeousness of this fort. There are a lot of palaces inside the fort with some elegant designs.
Karan Mahal: This white marble courtyard was a public audience hall to discuss and address their problems. It is the place where the coronation of every king took place. Here one can get to see the windows designed with European tiles.
Phool Mahal: Once you step into this place, you can feel the royalty. The speciality of this part is that, from walls to doors to windows everywhere, you can see beautiful flower paintings.
Anup Mahal: It was the administrative headquarter. The golden painting work, Italian tiled ceilingswith inlaid mirrors make this place spectacular.
Ganga Mahal: This place is fascinating as some unique items are preserved here. Old war weapons, palanquin, howdah can be seen here.
An aeroplane used by British Army in the 1st world war has been conserved nicely. After the 1st world war, this plane was gifted to Maharaja Ganga Singh.
Another exciting thing that you can’t miss is the spoon. On the upper side of this spoon has a pointed attachment. As the maharajas kept long moustache, it was a problem while drinking soup. It is the reason behind the unique design of this spoon.
Karni Mata Temple: Karni Mata Temple, also known as the ‘Temple of Rats’, is 30km away from the city. This temple is the home of thousands of rats. When you walk around the temple premises, these rats will crawl over your feet. But one should be careful because if one of these rats is killed, a rat made of silver is to be given.
This temple is also renowned for its history. As per legend, Karni Mata’s son died after falling into a well. Karni Mata meditated and worshipped Lord Yamaraj and brought her son’s life back but as a mouse. Therefore, it is believed that Karni Mata’s progeny is born as rats.
If a rat passed over your feet or among these thousands of black rats, if you can find the white one, it is very auspicious for you, and you should consider yourself lucky. Another temple dedicated to Karni Mata is 2km away from this one.
National Research Centre for Camel: Have you ever imagined a place full of different breeds of camel and their life? Yes, this is the place which gives you a whole new experience. The primary objective of this centre is to research camel breeding, camel milk, types of diseases that a camel can suffer from and find a cure for those diseases. Here you can also see the process of camels being milked. In addition, there is a museum which shows different information regarding camel.
Here you can also taste raw camel milk, flavoured camel milk, camel milk kulfi, camel milk lassi, camel milk tea and coffee; This will surely give you a whole new experience.
International Camel Festival is organised here annually in the month of January. This colourful festival includes camel race, camel dance, traditional folk dance.
