badhaai do & filmfare and how it affects the queer movement
badhaai do won 6 filmfare awards!! and apart from that, 14 nominations. this is such a welcome surprise to me considering how much the filmfare panders to popular films and celebrities. while i'm convinced that best actor in a supporting role was robbed from gulshan devaiah (who played guru) as well as best dialogues + best director, let's not dwell on that negativity. the war to get same-sex marriage is still on. and i'd like to thank the team for dedicating their awards to the queer community. for those who have been complaining yet again that this was a profitable venture for the people involved, think again about how much it tanked in the box office. and yes, bhumi pednekar has addressed the on-going legal battle for same sex marriage here. i would ask for jaded queer individuals like me to step back and think that there are different ways of coming together to support a social cause. making an entire film is one of them. green lighting such a film is one of them. acting in such a film is one of them. considering what the extremely homophobic government is capable of, we must take all such things into account. and when queer icons like onir also come out in support of badhaai do (btw his red carpet look on filmfare >>>), we should take a page from their book to see where they are coming from. also i went and checked out the team behind badhaai do (not just the actors). apparently the director (harshavardhan kulkarni) and the editor (kirti nakhwa) are already in hot soup with the government since they returned a NATIONAL AWARD a few years back. their reason? the growing intolerance of the government. kinda iconic. and a reminder that this is the same government that routinely sends journalists, activists, historians to jail while dabbling in the same fields and falsifying facts and history. (lmao calling our trauma an "urban elite" problem is so ironic considering they are the urban elites). badhaai do getting the second highest number of filmfare awards is one of the many victories that we have secured. please remind yourself to not alienate any sort of support whatsoever just because it doesn't fit the stereotypical narrative of activism. and after all, activism in art is the most powerful of its kind, is it not?

Afwaah (rumor) on #Netflix - Movie Review
Anubhav Sinha's #Afwaah on @Nerflix shines a light on the damage done when poison of hate is spread though social media and smart tech & needlessly innocent people die in the cross hairs.
Once again producer Anubhav Sinha has boldly taken on a challenging societal issue in the film, Afwaah, currently streaming on @Netflix.  Rahab Ahmad (Nawazuddin Siddiqui) is a US returned professional, professing a desire to give back to the homeland. As the film begins, Ahmad is merrily listening to jazz and driving through traffic, trying to get to a high profile literature festival where his…

Bhumi Pednekar Biography: From Casting Director to Award-Winning Actress
Bhumi Pednekar is a name synonymous with strong female characters and powerful performances in Hindi cinema. But her journey to the spotlight is unique, taking her from behind the scenes as a casting director to captivating audiences on screen. Let's delve into the life and career of this talented actress.
Tumblr media
Early Life and Family Background
Born on July 18, 1989, in Mumbai, Bhumi comes from a blend of Konkani and Haryanvi heritage. Her father, Satish Pednekar, was a former politician who served as a Maharashtra MLA and Home and Labour Minister [Wikipedia: Bhumi Pednekar]. Her mother, Sumitra Pednekar, became a vocal anti-tobacco activist after losing her husband to oral cancer, highlighting the importance of social causes in the Pednekar household. Bhumi also has a younger sister, Samiksha, who is a lawyer and a model.
Education and Early Steps in Entertainment
Bhumi's artistic side emerged early on, and at the age of 15, she pursued acting studies at the prestigious Whistling Woods International Institute. However, her attendance wasn't ideal, leading to her expulsion. But this setback didn't deter her. Bhumi landed a job as an assistant casting director at Yash Raj Films, a leading production house in Bollywood. Here, she honed her understanding of the industry for six years, working on films like "Chak De! India" and "Rocket Singh: Salesman of the Year".
From Casting Couch to Center Stage: A Remarkable Debut
While working at Yash Raj Films, Bhumi impressed director Sharat Katariya with her dedication and talent. This led to a life-changing opportunity in 2015. Katariya offered her the lead role in his film "Dum Laga Ke Haisha," a romantic comedy with a unique twist. Bhumi was required to gain weight for the role of Sandhya, an overweight bride in a small town. Her commitment to the character was evident, and the film became a sleeper hit, earning her critical acclaim and several awards, including the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut [Wikipedia: Bhumi Pednekar]. This marked a remarkable transition for Bhumi, from casting couch to center stage.
Career Milestones and Major Achievements
Bhumi has carefully chosen her roles, often portraying strong-willed women who challenge societal norms. She has worked with acclaimed directors and actors, delivering powerful performances in films like "Toilet: Ek Prem Katha" (2017), "Sonchiriya" (2019), "Saand Ki Aankh" (2019), and "Badhaai Do" (2022). Her dedication to portraying diverse characters and social issues has earned her three Filmfare Awards, solidifying her position as a leading actress in Bollywood.
Personal Life and Beyond the Screen
Bhumi is known to be private about her personal life, preferring to let her work speak for itself. However, she is vocal about environmental and social causes, following in her mother's footsteps. She is a strong advocate for animal rights and body positivity, using her platform to spread awareness about these important issues.
Notable Facts and Looking Ahead
A lesser-known fact about Bhumi is that she is a trained dancer and can even speak fluent Marathi. Looking ahead, Bhumi Pednekar continues to push boundaries and experiment with her craft. With her talent, dedication, and social conscience, she is sure to leave a lasting mark on Indian cinema.

all these bollywood celebs who pretended to be so woke and such big allies to queer people when they had queer films to promote have disappeared when it comes time to actually use their platform
yes im looking at you ayushman khurana, bhumi pednekar, jitendra kumar, rajkumar rao, madhuri dixit. tum toh ally the na community ke? where is your 'love is love' now? when we stand before the SC to ask for marriage rights, where are you now?!
this is exactly why queer people never wanted your disgusting representation in the first place. because we know you wouldn't give a shit about queer people and community irl. y'all just wanted to be 'progressive', use our stories for your profits and then use your privilege to get away with it.
sincerely, fuck off and take your fake representation with you

Thank You For Coming Review - Lively Ride That Falters at Climax
Kanika Kapoor just wants a man who can make her happy, but it's easier said than done. Read our review of "Thank You For Coming" starring Bhumi Pednekar.
⭐⭐⭐ Rating: 3 out of 5. After watching her play a politician’s daughter running away from her male chauvinist fiance in the gritty thriller “Afwaah”, it was fun to watch Bhumi Pednekar rush into getting herself a groom just to have an imaginary happy ending in “Thank You For Coming”. But that’s not what the film is about. Directed by Karan Boolani, this 2023 comedy is focused on female…

Bollywood Movies Part CCVIII
Tumblr media
Inspector Jatil Yadav (Nawazuddin Siddiqui) investigates the murder of the influential Raghubeer Singh (Khalid Tyabji) on his wedding night to his young second wife Radha (Radhika Apte). As Jatil investigates, he learns more about Raghubeer’s proclivities and about family secrets long left undisturbed, including the truth about the death of Jatil’s first wife (Natasha Rastogi).
CW for movie: human trafficking, rape, sexual abuse of a minor, some gore. Raat Akeli Hai is a good whodunnit that gives us a satisfying ending, while also being a love story. I enjoyed Jatil and Radha’s interactions, but I loved the performances of Shivani Raghuvanshi and Padmavati Rao as the combative Vasudha (Raghubeer’s niece) and the reprehensible Pramila Singh (Raghubeer’s sister-in-law) respectively. Ila Arun was also good as Jatil’s mother who wants him to get married. Favorite song is Ghoom Charkhya (no subtitles).
Tumblr media
Kaajal (Bhumi Pednekar) moves out from her cousin Dolly’s (Konkona Sen Sharma) place when Dolly’s husband Amit (Aamir Bashir) makes a move on her and leaves her hated factory job. To make ends meet, she starts working at an adult call center as Kitty and begins an affair with “Pradeep” (Vikrat Massey), one of her callers. Meanwhile, Dolly deals with trying to make ends meet for her and Amit’s new luxury apartment that under construction and with the backlash against her son Pappu (Kalp Shah) liking girly things.
CW: corporal punishment. Dolly Kitty aur woh Chamakte Sitare is a good film about two cousins and their lives. It does a good job talking about women experiencing sex and desire without punishing them for it. It also doesn’t shy away from showing the realities of the society they live in, but doesn’t make those realities disheartening. A great example of this is the call center and how all the women there support each other. Favorite songs are Neet Ve and Khwabida (audio only). Neither song has subtitles.
Tumblr media
Akash (Aditya Roy Kapur) goes to local crime lord Sattu Bhaiya (Pankaj Tripathi) to help take down a sex video made of him and his ex-girlfriend Shruti (Sanya Malhotra) without their knowledge. Meanwhile, Aalu (Rajkummar Rao) tries to help the woman he loves, Pinky (Fatima Sana Shaikh), when she comes to him to help get her husband out of jail for being prime suspect in a murder Sattu Bhaiya committed. After being released from prison, Bittu (Abhishek Bachchan), Sattu Bhaiya’s former second in command, meets Mini (Inayat Verma) who has run away from home and agrees with her plan to pretend to kidnap her to get her parents’ attention. Rahul (Rohit Saraf), after being taken by Sattu Bhaiya for being near the murder, manages to get Sattu Bhaiya’s money with the help of nurse Sheeja (Pearle Maaney), but Sattu Bhaiya sends his goons after them to get his money back.
Ludo is an entertaining dark comedy that is structurally based on the board game ludo (more recognizable to Americans as Parcheesi). It was quite entertaining and funny, while also being heartwarming. I loved Bittu and Mini’s story because of how cute it was, especially when Mini prompts Bittu on how to make ransom calls to her parents. Overall, a fun romp. Favorite songs are Qismat Ki Hawa Kabhi Naram (originally from Albela), Aarbaad Barbaad, and Meri Tum Ho. None of the songs have subtitles.
