20 Saal Baad 💀
Ek chhote se gaon mein ek purana bungalow tha, jise log bhoot bangla ke naam se jaante the. Us bungalow mein koi nahin rehta tha, kyunki log usse dar te the. Kahin kahta tha ki wahan par bhoot rehta hai, toh kahin kahta tha ki wahan par koi buri aatma hai.
Ek din, ek naye aadmi, Rohan ne us bungalow ko kharid liya aur wahan par apni family ke saath rahne laga. Rohan ek engineer tha aur usne socha ki yeh bungalow uske liye ek achha investment hoga.
Jaise hi raat padti, unhe ajeeb ajeeb awaazein sunayi deti. Kabhi kabhi unhe lagta ki koi unke saath hai, lekin jab ve dekhte, toh koi nahin hota. Rohan ki wife, Priya aur unki beti, Aisha bhi yeh awaazein sunti thi aur unhe bhi dar lagta tha.
Ek din, Aisha ne ek purani diary mili, jismein likha tha:
"Main is bungalow mein rehti thi, lekin mere pati ne mujhe mar diya. Meri aatma abhi tak yahan hai. Mera naam Riya tha aur main apne pati ke saath khush thi. Lekin mere pati ko mere baare mein kuch galat pata chala aur usne mujhe mar diya. Main abhi tak yahan hai aur mujhe insaaf chahiye."

On the heels of Stree and Roohi and Munjya (which I haven't seen yet, so I'm not 100% sure it falls into this category) and Bhediya, and also to some extent Bhoot Police (still haven't seen this, but I know it fits) and Phone Bhoot, here's another go at this suddenly in vogue 'horror comedy' genre. And to some extent, it really does feel like it's adopting a lot of what worked for Stree (well, at least the bit about a small town tale, folklore, and superstition) and trying to run with it.
And, sure, the movie does have its moments as a time-pass fare, though in the long run, it doesn't really do much to deviate from the typical story. Even the usual tropes - a ghost-hunter who seems to be winging it, the jokes about no one else being able to see the ghost (except the Kakuda, which they can all see) - are tried.
The folklore about the Kakuda is well done, but the underlying "why" that they explain towards the end just comes across as a bit weak. Also weak, and annoyingly so, is the very defeatist attitude of Sunny (Saqib Saleem) and his father and, really, the township as a whole. Just from the start he's very passive (which, I mean, fine, I'm that way too) and is easily even pushed by her parents into "pick someone for her to marry when you die," and it just becomes a bit much - probably in combination with her parents, who may be good at heart but who really just come across as insensitive nobodies. His sudden "be the hero" turn is also out of left field, though very predictable for this type of movie, and while it does work to extend the run time a bit more, it mostly just stands out as an unreasonable turn for this story given that the most 'heroic' thing he's done this whole movie is yell "daddy" when his dad insults his wife - before immediately going to his wife and asking her to leave (this is after HE HIMSELF decided to remove himself from the picture because he doesn't seem to realize that she cares for him).
Also, though - well, first, it is a bit hard to see why she loves him. All we ever see of him is a scaredy cat villager (how did he even meet her?) who can barely talk; second, for her to just immediately shoot down and make fun of this curse that he claims is real (to the point that she literally curses him to death by forcing him to get married at that exact moment despite his reluctance) without investigating it is kinda harsh. I mean, she pretty much signed his death warrant because she just assumed all the villagers were uneducated idiots.
I do like all the tools and equipment that Riteish's 'ghost hunter' carries around, and the fact that they don't let him down during the movie (another overdone cliché in these types of movies).
It's time pass. It's a bit lacking in comedy, beyond the very cliché and tried, and isn't exactly a whole bunch of jump scares (thankfully), but it makes for a decent watch and could probably be a bit of fun to watch with friends.

Bollywood Movies Part CCXIII
Ibrahim (Roshan Mathew) has to decide whether to aid SI Sathyan (Murali Gopy) in transferring murderer Vishnu (Sagar Surya) into police custody or give him up to Laiq (Prithviraj Sukumaran), a fanatic who desires religious retribution.
Kuruthi is a great movie about how religious fanaticism of all colors is destructive. I especially enjoyed Mamukoyya as Moosa Khader who is the voice of reason, even though he's not often listened to. It was also fun to see Prithviraj stretch his villain acting muscles. Favorite songs are Mankoodil and Vetta Mrigam. Both songs have English subtitles.
Anshul Malhotra, code name Bell Bottom (Akshay Kumar), works to release hostages on a plane hijacked by Azaadi Dal, which Anshul believes is a front for Pakistan's intelligence service.
Bell Bottom is loosely based on various plane hijackings in the 1980s by Sikh Separtists but blames them on Pakistan which is historical revisionism to further the conflict between India and Pakistan. Also, I do not remember much about the movie and it blurs with all the other Akshay Kumar spy films. Favorite songs are Khair Mangde and Tum Aaogey. Neither song has subtitles.
Vibhu (Saif Ali Khan) and Chiku (Arjun Kapoor) are two brothers who run an exorcism business, even though Chiku believes in the supernatural while Vibhu does not. One day they meet Maya (Yami Gautam) who wants them to exorcise a kishkandi that their father famed exorcist Ullat Baba (Saurabh Sachadeva) had previously trapped.
Bhoot Police is very silly and an entertaining watch. You could tell the actors, especially Saif Ali Khan, were having fun during this film. Also the ending is quite wholesome. Favorite song is Aayi Aayi Bhoot Police (transliterated Hindi subtitles).

The series is streaming on JioCinema. Sumit Kadel wrote reviewing the murder series, "#MurderInMahim starts off promisingly, offering a fresh take on the murder mystery genre by exploring social issues like sex work, class divide, and LGBTQ+ challenges. However, as the story progresses, it loses its momentum and becomes tiresome to watch. The constant back-and-forth between the main plot and the characters' personal lives feels like a distraction, and the series ultimately fails to maintain its focus. While the initial episodes are engaging, the overall experience leaves viewers feeling exhausted by the convoluted storyline and lack of coherence. Earnest Performances by #VijayRaaz & #AshutoshRana are the only saving grace." Murder in Mahim Review in Twitter (X) "Suspense. Intrigue. Unpredictable… #MurderInMahim completely immerses you in a complicated case, with the characters keeping you on the edge, throwing plenty of surprises as the plot thickens. One of the strengths of #MurderInMahim is the razor-sharp writing", wrote a user.

I think this is supposed to be a 'funny'/'spoof' version of Ghostbusters - largely harmed by the fact that it isn't funny. Self-aware, to the point of making fun of itself and the people in it; yet, somehow, much of the 'making fun' sorta fails to really make you laugh. There are a few funny bits, sure (the Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham theme comes to mind), and a bit of the banter between our two leads occasionally gets there. But, for the most part, the humor fails to land.
Even most of the puns - and there are quite a few of them - fail to be funny, and that is disappointing because puns are, in general, hilarious. They just found every one that isn't.
The narrator is, like most of the movie, not funny. In fact, he starts grating pretty early on - and the whole intermission spiel is a total disaster. Also a disaster, pretty much the whole plot with Jackie Shroff (which is problematic, since he appears to be the major villain). It's frustrating, it's annoying - and somehow, as someone working with spirits, lying about emancipating spirits from the world, and never leaving this underground, he takes cash as bribes? Like, what is he going to do with cash.
Their first actual exorcism, with Dolly or what's-her-name, feels like a direct copy from Bhoot Police's first 'exorcism' (though, admittedly, I've only seen like 20 minutes of the movie); but also, in that, not very fun. For a movie about 'ghost busters' or whatever you're calling them, they only do about 4 exorcisms (3 of them interposed at the same time), and all in quick succession - the rest of the movie is spent them arguing with each other over a ghos, needlessly giving screen time to Jackie Shroff's character (speaking of which - he plays a ghost A LOT) and that plot/subplot, or the random movie-related sequences (climax; rewind, slow-motion; story time; etc.).
The whole 'background'/flashback with Katrina was slightly hilarious (the constant horse comments, and Ishaan messing up the guy's name), but mostly just a bunch of 'WTF?'. Like, the accident - obviously we all know it's coming, but - he refuses to keep his eyes on the road, and then she stupidly UNBUCKLES HER SEATBELT mid-drive while he is completely ignoring the road!
The slapping of Siddhant was like flashback to Heyy Babyy, and not in a good way.
Speaking of flashbacks - the direct references to Haqeeqat, Gaddaar, and Hero (amongst others) and the probable underhand jab(s) at Brahmastra were entertaining, to a degree - though the Hero one coming mid-climax was odd timing since you just sort of want it to end. The appearance of the Fukrey trio was an unexpected treat. But, in general ... it tries too hard to be hyperaware, and while it's funny in bits, for the most part it fails to be funny or entertaining. Which is disappointing, because on the whole, the plot has it's moments (and could definitely have been much greater).
The climax, and the computer graphics in general, are ... not good. I did, for the most part, enjoy both of the leads - though it feels like they were sort of let down by the script.
I'm still looking for that runaway "best Bollywood movie of 2022" and I'm just starting to think it does not exist. We're also at the point where if Drishyam 2 is even half as good as Drishyam (and given how much I loved Drishyam, the sequel would have to be utter and complete shit for me to hate it), it'll be runaway 'best of 2022.' Which isn't bad, necessarily, but it is I think the sad reality of just how bad Bollywood was last year.
