Dark (2017-2020, Netflix)

Just rewatched Dark and I`m in love and in pain, pain, PAIN...

Beware of being heavily spoiled ahead.

The first painful question: would you save your father from sufferings, if it would mean for you to be erased from existence for good? (From this question on started my love for this show).

The second question: is it really wrong, to love someone you shouldn`t love? Will it cause the end of the world?

The desperate abduction. Oh, it was so beautiful!

The third question: will you really be happy with the truth about a time loop that you helped to build with your own hands, when you are able to see the whole picture?

At the end I felt sorry even for him. The fourth question: how does it feel, to try so hard to change your doom and save your loved ones, only to find out that you are the source of their most unbearable pain?

"You are a too good man. Always was. This world didn't deserve you." It's a story about an infinite pain of each and every character: Katharina, Ulrich, Claudia and H.G. Tannhaus, who loved their relatives too much; Hannah, who loved herself too much; Jonas, Mikkel, Martha, Hanno, Charlotte, Elisabeth, Peter, Egon and Helge, who fell victims of the time-travel paradox. It's funny that an insane love for a child launched this glitch in a matrix and another insane love for a child put it all to the end. A circle closed. Poetic.

The fifth question: would you fix the error in a matrix by self-sacrifice, if it would delete you and half of your nearest and dearest from existence but ends the never-ending circle of pain for others?

Finally, I should say that I'm very grateful to Germans for this series. I watched it in original in order to train my German AND because it was a very-very interesting show. Even when I watched it for the second time. One time is surely not enough for understanding of the plot, trust me.

Fix It Wednesday - Caryl Fanfiction Rec

Hey, dear fellow carylers! Today's story is for those who still have problems with Negan's redemption arc in the last seasons of TWD wish Carol had played a more important role in the Saviors war. Bleed, written by adistantfire, is posted on 9Lives. Summary: Daryl remains a prisoner when Morgan knocks on Carol’s door to give her bad news. Alternative version of what happened after Daryl was captured and an appeal for war is made to the Kingdom.

Rating: M Word count: 8.315 Published: July 13, 2017 (one-shot) This is an emotionally intense story, with raw descriptions of torture and violence, and beautifully written sentences. The dive our author takes into Carol's mind at this time period is really good. She's really someone who would do anything, go to any lengths, to protect those that she loves, consequences be damned. Oh, I love how Morgan and Daryl interact with her - one providing fuel, the other slamming on her breaks. It's also very satisfying to see Negan getting what he deserves.

Go read it, dear fellow carylers (but, please, beware of the author's warnings and notes). It's dark and angsty, but so, so good. You won't regret it. Don't forget to leave some love to our author in the form of a review. It's always appreciated.

Note that up until "Fortune Favours The Wicked", anything and everything I talk about is either part of Scrooge's 2017-canon backstory, or is a part of that history that's never filled in in the show (so it COULD'VE happened but probably not). The fic diverges more and more from 2017 canon as it progresses, as we see what things would be like if just a few things changed, here and there...

Also the story starts moving SUPER FAST after "Flames Old And New Ignited", that's intentional.

Also also I split it into three parts and named them after the Christmas ghosts because, y'know, Scrooge, and also that his life in the show really does have three distinct phases - from his youth up till when Della left, his Post-Spear Depression, and his reconciliation with the fam. But of course, in this AU, things don't go according to plan all the time...

But yeah if anyone wants to know more PLEASE ask, I would love to infodump about this, it'll probably be the longest thing I've EVER written when it's done.

Honestly, I think that both Gyro and Fenton and Webby, Lena and Violet would like to take a look at lightsabers and holocrons. After all, as shown in the Star Wars The Clone Wars episode ‘A Test Of Strength’, lightsabers are pieces of technology that are powered by Kyber Crystals which, as shown in the episode ‘The Gathering’, are powered by the Force which is practically a magic-like energy and holocrons, as shown in the Darth Bane Path Of Destruction novel, are also pieces of technology that are powered by the Force. And as shown in the episode ‘Beware The B.U.D.D.Y. System!’, Gyro and Fenton are scientists and, as shown in the episode ‘Friendship Hates Magic!’, Webby, Lena and Violet are quite enthusiastic when it comes to the magical. So, it would make sense that both a team of scientists and a team of magic enthusiasts would like to take a look at lightsabers and holocrons. And given that, as stated in the Star Wars Uprising video game, Kyber Crystals are able to channel energy and generate enormous returns, Gyro and Fenton might try to see if Kyber Crystals can be used as a new energy source. And, if they do, I think that Gyro and Fenton might try to use a Kyber Crystal to power up the Gizmoduck Armor and, given that Kyber Crystals are powered by the Force, that might make the Gizmoduck Armor more powerful. Also, as shown in the Ahsoka novel, Kyber Crystals that were previously corrupted by the Dark Side Of The Force can be purified by someone who is aligned with the Light Side and become aligned with the Light Side Of The Force again and thus cause the lightsaber blade to change color since lightsaber blade colors depend on the Kyber Crystal. This also means that lightsaber blade colors sometimes also depend on the personality of the user. So, given that, as shown in the episode ‘Friendship Hates Magic!’, Violet is quite curious when it comes to the mystical, I think that she would be curious to see what happens if Lena were to try to purify a previously corrupted Kyber Crystal with her magic. I think that the result would be that the lightsaber blade color would be grey and pink. Grey because of the fact that, as shown in the episode ‘The Split Sword Of Swanstantine!’, Lena is willing to embrace negative emotions as well as positive emotions and pink because of the fact that, as shown in the episode ‘The Shadow War Part 2: The Day Of The Ducks!’, Lena has a loving bond with Webby which helped her stand up against Magica De Spell. Also, I think that Webby would love to spar with Lena and help her practice using a lightsaber as I pointed out in my How I Think Certain DuckTales (2017) Characters Would Wield A Lightsaber post since Webby is, as shown in the episode ‘From The Confidential Casefiles Of Agent 22!’, a combat enthusiast.

As for the holocrons, I think that Gyro and Fenton would like to study holocrons because of the fact that they are devices that seem to be more responsive to certain emotions than other emotions like how, as shown in the Star Wars Rebels episode ‘The Holocrons Of Fate’, Jedi Holocrons are more responsive to the positive emotions of a Force user while Sith Holocrons are more responsive to the negative emotions of a Force user. So, I think that Gyro and Fenton would like to see if there’s a way to use a Jedi Holocron’s technology’s responsiveness to positive emotions to keep Gyro’s bulb tech from turning evil. And I think that Webby, Lena and Violet would like to study holocrons too to see how they work. However, they would have a much harder time studying Sith Holocrons. After all, as shown in the Darth Bane Path Of Destruction novel, holocrons have Gatekeepers which are AI with the personality of the person who created the holocron and, as shown in Legacy (2006) #5, it’s not easy to gain information from Sith Gatekeepers since Sith aren’t always quick to share their knowledge. Also, Sith Holocrons are dangerous since, as shown in the Star Wars Legacy Of The Jedi novel, just looking through a Sith Holocron was sometimes enough to traumatize and make a Jedi Youngling sick. Webby and Violet might not be effected by it since they’re not Force-sensitive but I’m not so sure about Lena. After all, Lena may not technically be Force-sensitive but she is a magical being since, as shown in the episode ‘The Shadow War Part 1: The Night Of De Spell!’, she is a living shadow. And magic is somewhat similar to the Force. Webby and Violet might have to make sure that Lena isn’t even in the same room just to make sure she’s safe from any Sith Holocrons they might try to look at.

Monster High Electrified Review

Ciao lovelies! Recently I watched the new Monster High movie, Electrified! I decided to do a review since Monster High is one of my special interests!

 WARNING- Spoilers below! 

This movie is the second movie in the new reboot canon. In the Monster High fandom, there are now 2 canons (or official universes), the old canon (before the “Welcome to Monster High” movie) and the new canon (the reboot, so far its “Welcome to Monster High” and “Electrified”).

This new canon’s backstory is a bit different, and I honestly don’t love the backstory here as much. But I do like certain aspects: mostly how it’s 

1. SO GAY OH MY GOD I’m SO HAPPY MY OTP (one true pairing, my fave couple) HAS A CHANCE TO BE TOGETHER THANK GOD FINALLY I MAY HAVE SOME REPRESENTATION IN MY FAVE FANDOM and

 2. Probably going to usher in the scene revival (along with Suicide Squad, but more on this will be in a different blog post.)

 I want to review the new movie Electrified in depth today! I plan on buying it on DVD when it comes out (but for now, I’ve watched it via streaming because I’m a bad kid and couldn’t wait!).

For this review, I want to review different aspects of the movie in comparison to the other reboot movie, “Welcome to Monster High.” I may occasionally also compare things to the old canon. So let’s go!

OVERALL STORY (HUGE spoilers in this section! Reader beware!)

Electrified was a fun movie because it brings back some elements of the old canon’s movies that I like so much, specifically having subplots going on alongside main plots. In Electrified, Clawdeen is following her dreams of making fashions for both Monsters and Normies (humans). Her squad (the main ghouls- Draculaura, Frankie, Cleo, Lagoona, and surprisingly, Ari) team up to help her, and they begin turning the old power station where Frankie used to live into a salon. 

Meanwhile, Frankie meets a new ghoul named Twyla. (I’m so glad they brought her back!). Frankie notices that Moanica and her Zomboys are acting strange and Twyla offers to spy on them. Frankie agrees to this but expresses concern for Twyla, and later saves Twyla from being struck by lightning, but Frankie gets struck. 

She seems normal at first, but becomes more and more jittery, absorbing power from her surroundings and begins to glow blue.

She ends up adding the extra “spark” to Clawdeen’s designs, also creating a small, not very cute (in my opinion) electricity-creature named Znap:

While the designs are being electrified, Twyla finds out that Moanica is using Frankie’s science experiment from the beginning of the movie to steal power from the normies, all under the power station that the ghouls are turning into the salon. Moanica explains that since the normies are afraid of the dark (as explained by Dracula in one of the human studies classes), she wants to make a blackout and terrorize them.

Moanica’s first attempt to trap the power fails, and when she sees Frankie absorbing electricity, she lets Twyla go. Twyla leads Frankie to Moanica’s power stealing device, and Moanica uses Frankie as the new host for all the normie electricity.

Meanwhile, the salon opening is going well. The normies are loving the new “monster inspired” fashions, and think that all the ghouls are wearing costumes. At the height of their success, Moanica activates her device, now using Frankie as a conduit, and causes a blackout, and then unleashes the Zomboys. They all go and wreak havoc.

The main ghouls go under the power station and find Frankie, full of electricity, in shock. They manage to get her out of it by getting her to create more Znap creatures. They all go to stop Moanica, and a small, rather fun looking battle occurs, resulting in Moanica and the Zomboys being forced to clean up the salon they destroyed as punishment. Clawdeen’s salon has a reopening.

Overall, this storyline is pretty good, and having the multiple dimensions to it keeps viewer interest. I didn’t include all of the subplots in that summary though. 

Here are the subplots that didn’t get mentioned:

-The girls rescue a new ghoul (Silvi Timberwolf).

-Silvi, Venus, Wraith, Deuce, and a few other monsters form a band. They spend the entire movie bickering over the name and music style. Silvi and Venus get new electrified outfits. The band settles on incorporating every members ideas at the same time.

-The Dracula and Clawdeen’s mom romantic subplot is strengthened.

-Clawdeen’s inner struggle with the difficulties of creativity and fear of failure.

My Favorite Little Moments That Made Me Smile

-Moanica admitting that she can’t stay mad at the Zomboys, and that they can all go out for ice cream afterwards.

-The Zomboys flirting with a brain that suspiciously wears glasses that look like Ghoulia’s.

-Dracula screaming and running around, imitating a human afraid of a spider (gif from @monsterhigh-gifs )

-Twlya’s obvious crush on Frankie

Overall this storyline for me gets a 4/5. I found that the band subplot was too distracting and kind of irritating. I liked the overall story though. Especially the extra character development it gave everyone.

FASHION

So….This one is…iffy. I liked how the electrified outfits looked on some ghouls:

Frankie’s makeup for it made her/them look soo cute!

 I also liked how it looked on Cleo, and Ari.

But it looked awful on like EVERYONE ELSE. I mean seriously, LOOK AT VENUS! My sweet Eco-punk child looks like a hot mess.

I also agree with Raythe in that why didn’t the guys get electric inspired stuff? As bad as it may have looked on most ghouls, I was still curious on what it may have looked like on the mansters.

And why can’t poor Moanica ever get new clothes or hair? Why is it that only the main ghouls got new looks? (and I guess Silvi and Venus, and arguably Dracula).

Also, poor Lagoona, this look does her NO justice..

Overall, the fashion in this movie (and the dolls) was 3/5. While I liked that they introduced different types of makeup, hair, and fabrics, these looks were hot messes!

MUSIC

So, I have a definite fave from this soundtrack, and it’s “Me and My Amigos.” It’s so sassy, catchy, and perfect for Moanica!

However, that was literally like the only song that was notable.

“Electrified” by the band created in the movie was….not exactly..good, in my opinion. 

“Electric Fashion” isn’t really good either. It’s catchy but it’s too simple.

Overall the music was 2/5 compared to the old canon and “Welcome to Monster High.”

DOLLS

The dolls for this movie could also use some help.

For 1, once again I haven’t seen any male dolls released for the reboot. Not even for Electrified.

For 2, the only version of Frankie I can find is the version with Znap, and this sucks, because that version is pretty expensive, and also is less versatile, as you can’t change her/their clothes. (She’s/they're wired.)

For 3, all the dolls have that crimped hair, and it’s not very soft. The Ari that

I got, her hair was very coarse and not fun to handle.

I will say, there’s a lot of detail on the dresses,  including all of the different patterns, colors, and textures you see in the movie. They also come with extra hairclips!

Another thing I like about the reboot dolls in general is that the joints are stronger. And the bodies feel more durable (and heavy.) Not to mention, they fit Ever After High doll clothing more easily (though still not perfectly.)

Overall, the Electrified dolls are 4/5!

OTHER MERCH

I haven’t seen any other merch for this movie other than the dolls, which is incredibly disappointing. Let’s hope that more comes out when the movie comes out on dvd.

OTHER TIDBITS

-I don’t like Znap, I’m sorry, I don’t think he’s cute. If the reboot is going to do pets, they should at least give Frankie a stitched together pet like the old canon (Sparky the dog and also the stitched teddy bear).

-They’re slowly developing Frankie and Draculaura’s relationship which I like. Once again, they refrained from shoving in any un-needed male love interests for either of them, let’s hope it stays that way!

So that’s my review on Electrified! I can’t wait to get it when it comes out on DVD!

Issue #57: “Vil-Gil-An-T vs. Lava Beast P.2”: Vil-Gil-An-T is forced to release his own beast when Lava Beast attacks his house.

Issue #58: “AIs To The Rescue”: It’s AISHA, EVA and MAX to the rescue when the Mighty Solars gets framed by a jealous detective and her team. Inspired by the Be Cool, Scooby-Doo Series Finale, “Professor Huh?”

Issue #59: “Beware The Dark Side”: A mysterious rogue vigilante appears and has been murdering criminals. This gets much worse when the heroes discover he looks exactly like Terry!

Not to treat you like an expert on comic books but, what do you think of the Ominous Chalkboard Ramblings from flashpoint beyond #0? Idk what half of it means but… Geoffy’s little hints gotta mean smth for his other ongoings

i'd love to be treated like a comic book expert, god knows i try to read enough to warrant it! i think a lot of the chalkboard is pretty straightforward so let's take a look at it:

5G averted -> the 5G initiative, or generation five, was a rumoured reboot of the dc universe that had been set up all the way back in doomsday clock 2017 and then unceremoniously cancelled between dan didio jumping ship and the pandemic delaying books & thus putting the fear of low sales in publishers' hearts. what we have left of 5G is wonder woman #750 (which is narrated by alan scott while attending the 1939 world's fair), the flash #750, detective comics #1027, generations: shattered #1, generations: forged #1 and supposedly future state. the purpose of this potential reboot had been to unite all eras of the dcu and make sense of it all over again like zero hour: crisis in time had back in 1994. instead, we got the soft reboot that is infinite frontier 2020 and the current time-related arc starting from the new golden age 2022 #1 because geoff is clearly still set on the generations/legacy aspect (and thank god he is!).

must travel beyond omniverse etc -> this one's less clear but i'd guess it's related to dark crisis 2022 and the return of the infinite earths, we've got an upcoming tie-in (dark crisis: big bang) dealing with precisely this. geoff explains the omniverse and hypertime better than i ever could right here:

the true black adam will show no mercy -> i think the answers to this one may be found within the pages of christopher priest's black adam 2022 miniseries but unfortunately i don't keep up with that one. something to do with malik white surely?

fall of justice league/rise of legacy league -> one again dark crisis related. when flashpoint beyond first came out we were very much still in the very early stages of crisis, it stands to reason that the legacy league is referring to the generation of heroes currently at the forefront of the action (jon, yara, dick & damian, etc) after the death of the justice league in justice league #75 last summer.

why is deathstroke not acting like deathstroke? -> again early dark crisis, the fact that slade hadn't been using his usual methods is a topic of discussion more than once in the first couple issues. the answer is that he's been possessed/infected by the great darkness and he's under pariah's control!

the legions of four worlds/remember earth-3/warn earth-247 -> i suspect this one's something to keep an eye on for future developments but the original legion of super-heroes was wiped out during the continuity reboots in zero hour, giving rise to a different legion until infinite crisis 2005 when a third incarnation appeared, which means up to now we technically have the legions of three worlds -- a fourth may very well be the one seen in the new golden age #1, which showed a future justice society in the 30th century but that's an educated guess at best. worth noting here is that remembering earth-3 is likely referring to remembering its destruction during crisis on infinite earths 1985 and earth-247 (named as such in infinite crisis) refers to the post-zero hour future earth of the second legion of super-heroes incarnation.

the great darkness wants nothing -> very much true, dark crisis: the deadly green 2022 #1 reveals the great darkness to be infected by pariah's madness and grief and having no motive of its own.

beware: he'll find his son do not interfere -> this one's anyone's guess since it's kept purposely vague. one of my theories is that it may refer to the stranger seen haunting helena in the new golden age being per degaton's son to keep in line with the lost children theme, otherwise i can't think of any character currently looking for his son (flashpoint thomas has already found his son after all, while a few others -- jay garrick, roy harper -- are looking for daughters). another possibility is doctor manhattan's son from doomsday clock as he's briefly seen in the new golden age.

his daughter will rejoin the justice society to save it -> helena wayne! the new golden age and the upcoming jsa ongoing both reveal that someone's been interfering with the justice society's timeline across the ages and helena's on a quest to save the jsa, the use of 'rejoin' makes it especially obvious since she hasn't been a part of the team since all-star comics 1976.

thomas wayne will die -> flashpoint thomas wayne was going to die as rip hunter makes it abundantly clear in flashpoint beyond #6 but bruce's gambit paid off and thomas came to accept a world without his son.

who's hunting the time masters? -> the leading question in, again, the new golden age. my guess is per degaton or a possible son (see above) with access to his time-travel tech.

based on the shining i'd recommend you the lodge (2019), the others (2001), the orphanage (2007), the conjuring (2013), his house (2020) and the dark and the wicked (2020) because they're all isolated family centered horror with haunting atmospheres. 

based on eraserhead i'd recommend possession (1981), antichrist (2009) (extremely explicit both sexually and violently so beware!), rosemary's baby (1968), the babadook (2014), titane (2021) and mother! (2017) because they're all insane movies about parenthood/not wanting to be a parent.

based on black swan and perfect blue i'd recommend mulholland drive (2001), suspiria (2018), censor (2021), the invisible man (2020), the first omen (2024) and unsane (2018) about women losing their grip on reality.

based on the thing i’d recommend the blob (1988), the fly (1986), mimic (1997), the descent (2005), alien (1979), color out of space (2019), event horizon (1997), annihilation (2018), splinter (2008) and [rec] (2007) for great effects and/or an anxiety inducing isolated setting.

based on bride of chucky i'd recommend you lisa frankenstein (2024), jennifer's body (2009), all cheerleaders die (2013), elvira, mistress of evil (1988), death becomes her (1992), the craft (1996) and ready or not (2019) because they've got some of my fav female horror characters who may or may not kill someone every now and then.

based on cloverfield i'd recommend you the host (2006), a quiet place (2018), troll hunter (2010), nope (2022), the thing (1982), the descent (2005) and shin godzilla (2016), underwater (2020) and alien (1979) because they're some of my favourite anxiety inducing creature horrors.

based on scream i'd recommend you urban legend (1998), behind the mask: the rise of leslie vernon (2006), house of wax (2005), you're next (2011), haunt (2019), the final girls (2015) and totally killer (2023) because they're some of my fav female lead (comedy) horrors.

based on ginger snaps i'd recommend you may (2002), let the right one in (2008), bones and all (2022), raw (2016), stoker (2013) and carrie (1976) because they're all about young women going through something bloody.
