Besties Vegan Paradise, 4882 Fountain Ave., Los Angeles (East Hollywood), CA 90029
Tumblr media
What could have been another corner market at one time is now a destination for vegans in Los Angeles. Everything at Besties is vegan. They have a deli case with vegan meats and cheeses, frozen desserts, baked goods, sauces, noodles, rice, spices, beverages, tofu, tempeh, snacks, candy, etc. While you can find some of the brands they carry elsewhere (e.g., Ripple, Coconut Bliss, Beyond Meat, Nada Moo), they have a deeper selection of vegan products than even much larger stores like Erewhon. They had Tofurky products that I haven’t seen elsewhere. They had some prepared meals and desserts from local companies like Karma Baker and Yvonne’s.
Another room houses their zero waste products – soaps, lotions, washcloths, bowls, toothbrushes, bags, etc.
Also, they have vegan hot food (franks, taquitos, mozzarella sticks, chili) and soft serve (two flavors a day). There’s a stamp card for their hot food, floats, sundaes, and soft serve.
The shelf tag has the weight, where the item is produced and the price.
Minor Figures Nitro oat milk matcha ($2.92)
Foodies PUMFU original ($6.96) – cheaper than Erewhon, good stuff, like tofu but made with pumpkin seeds
Hodo tofu firm ($4.54) – cheaper than Sip/Snack in Highland Park
Mortal Kombucha Chill Flower ($4.74) – haven’t seen this brand elsewhere, the kombucha flavor wasn’t strong enough for me
Vegan soft serve, vanilla ($5.95) – this wasn’t good, it was super sweet, sweeter than froyo and most soft serve ice cream. The vanilla flavor didn’t taste like vanilla. It was more like marshmallow. In any case, the flavor was bland and not very pleasant. And it was way too sweet.  But it was smooth and creamy.
4 out of 5 stars.

Vegetarian Dining In Los Angeles – Eating Out Meat-Free In LA
Plant-based diets are spreading like agave, and Los Angeles is fortunate enough to have vegan hotspots in every neighborhood. Wherever you may find yourself in this expansive city, the best fruits, veggies and nuts are never far away. Whether you're celebrating World Vegan Month in November, or just scrolling for the best vegan restaurants nearby, here are our picks for the best vegan restaurants across Los Angeles.
AU LAC Tucked away in the Promenade Plaza, Au Lac (710 W 1st St., Los Angeles 90012; 213.617.2533)is an upscale gem that offers imaginative raw and Vietnamese fusion dishes. The salt and pepper yam “shrimp” are eerily real, while the rich desserts are perfect for sharing. It's a good place for celebrity sightings, but the true star is Chef Ito, who has taken a vow of silence and just might grace you with a visit your table. Don’t forget to ask the server about the “secret menu.”
AZLA ETHIOPIAN EATERY While Ethiopian food is generally very vegan-friendly, LA is fortunate enough to have two 100% vegan Ethiopian restaurants. Azla (4309 Leimert Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA 90008) offers a walk-up window outside of Little Ethiopia, in Lemeirt Park. Their Ful Bet serves up brunch every day, Ethiopian style with a touch of California. Wake up with a bowl of traditional ful, an Impossible Burger spiced with mittmitta mayo, or misir fries for a twist on the taste of the Horn of Africa. New Hours: 8 am - 4 pm.
BESTIES VEGAN PARADISE Ok, so technically Besties (4882 Fountain Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90029) is a grocery store, one voted as Best Vegan Grocery Store in America in the VegNews Veggie Awards for good reason, but the food scene swirling around this East Hollywood spot makes it a popular local eating establishment, too. They pride themselves on being "the only ethical vegan grocery store in the world," their products being 100% manufactured by ethical vegan brands sharing their commitment to equality. They often spotlight Black-owned, woman-owned, LGBTQ-owned and local brands (and were early supporters of pop-ups like Compton Vegan, Raices KItchen, Wolfie's Hot Chicken and more).
Living up to their name, they offer their own $8 daily lunch special combo that includes a vegan 'Vrank' (hot dog), chips & soda and make some of the best vegan soft-serve in town, too.
BLACK FOREST BAKERY Black Forest Bakery sells artisanal sourdough and other goodies out of their van in Los Feliz and Silver Lake, but you can catch their warm raspberry-filled Berliners at Besties Vegan Paradise in Hollywood if you time it right. Pick up a loaf of OG sourdough, some foccacia or a streusel kuchen (German apple pie) by watching their instagram for locations and pre-order info.
COMPTON VEGAN A local food delivery phenomenon-turned-pop-up-turned-food-truck, Compton Vegan is all about creating delicious, nutritious comfort food. Look for the soul food on wheels rolling through the city, promoting Meatless Mondays at 4269 Crenshaw from 7pm - 11 pm and keep up on Instagram to get a plate full of baked beans, collard greens, mac-n-cheese, and jackfruit-based 'ribz.'

Compostin’
December is here! Holy cow! I have almost been on island for 6 months and it’s already almost the end of 2021! That is mind blowing! I can’t believe how much these last months flew by! December brought a lot of new energy, new baby next door lambs!!! Also pup times, pup dates, delicious home made foods, snow on Mauna Kea, and new holiday traditions! This is traditionally the month to let go and release what no longer serves you but sadly I also had to let go of things I didn’t want to say goodbye to. Hoping that it will result in even better renewed life experiences created in the future!
November 30th saw the first snow on Mauna Kea for the season! What a gift that was to witness!!! So so beautiful and stunning and amazing on our beautiful volcano. December brought in some rainy days but also some days of crystal clear waters and sunlight reflecting off the mountains and creating the most beautiful Nalus ( reflection) in the ocean waves! Nala and I enjoyed the chillier weather and breeze in the morning and at night. It felt like a Hawaiian winter was here. Nala got to enjoy her advent treat calendar and I got to enjoy the adorableness of baby lambs being born next door to where Jason lives. OMG they are just the sweetest little things with the sweetest little baas! My heart absolutely exploded.
Musu had another vet check up and got scheduled to be spayed and also enjoyed her first adventure with Nala to King’s landing! Musu even went into the ice ponds there and really enjoyed scrambling and standing up on the rocks pondering her new life. She did get the zoomies after Nala modeled how to be a wild and free pup and that was just the most heartwarming thing to witness! Musu letting go and releasing her fear and feeling safe enough to experience joy, happiness, and freedom! Nala was such a great role model of how to hike, stay on the trails, and swim and roll in the sand, expressing her goofy, sweet silliness in all the most adorable ways.
Mid december brought after work dance parties with the besties, an amazing camping trip at Lone Palm, and tough good bye ceremonies for our dear Ash who was heading back to California. Our camping trip to Lone Palm was on the night of the Geminid meteor shower peak so we saw not only an amazing Kona side sunset, but also an incredible spectacle in the sky all night long, along with the best of friend chats and cuddles. It was so hard to sleep because the shooting stars just kept getting better! Sunrise was gorgeous on our little deserted tropical paradise, and Nala and I enjoyed playing in the tidal pools. Ash, Saydee, and I shared one last surf at Honolii and our last meals out together at our favorite vegan spot called Vibe, as well as one last adventure to Kona with friends. We appreciated Ash in a PQ style appreciation ceremony and cried and laughed and sang to so many songs ( mostly our new friend song by Rainbow Kitten Surprise). My heart was breaking to say goodbye to Ash after Saydee, Ash, and I had grown so close and developed such a special trio bond and friendship! It just wouldn’t be the same without her here on island and I would miss her so much. I kept holding on to the idea of reuniting soon and adventuring and living all together one day again soon.
Rain came to Hilo shortly after Ash left island :( It was just so hard to say goodbye and let go of something so good! But fortunately the skies cleared for Christmas Eve and Christmas day! It was a very pup Christmas with so many presents for the girlies and so many treats and cookies to devour. Jason and I cooked a ton that weekend and made a delicious vegan Christmas feast! The weather was gorgeous and the weekend was spent soaking up the sunshine, seeing the sheep, sharing some gifts, enjoying the garden, and loving on our sweet babes. The last week of the year we enjoyed some more time off from work, lounging around, running errands, cool ocean breezes, Mauna kea sunsets, and a fun day trip to Kona to surf!  We spent it exploring the white sand beaches, shelling, watching the waves break, and we even got the special treat to see a Hawaiian endangered monk seal first hand on the beach!
The last couple of days of the year I went back to work and held a New Year Intention setting ceremony for the students. I did my own ceremony at home and reflected on my past year, the intentions I had set, created, and accomplished, the ones I had not, the deep gratitude I held in my heart, the experiences and people I had gained, the things I had lost, and the lessons, experiences, and things that might be renewing and returning one day in the future in a new and rejuvenated form! I spent New Year’s Eve watching the insane fire work show in Hilo on Jason’s deck. Hawaiians absolutely love fireworks, and it was absolutely crazy how many were set off. I was really leaning into the sense of appreciation for what has manifested in my life and for what is to come with a little more open and aware heart, hopefully a little more every single year. I was grateful for my family, my Nala bear, and all my loved ones. I was feeling grateful for living on this island and calling it my home and for all the magic and natural beauty and culture here. I am grateful for what I have let go of and composted, to make room for all that came into my life in the year 2021. I am grateful for what I hold close and what I will release after this year to bring more peace, love, and joy in 2022.

Made a run to Besties Vegan Paradise to get my fave delicious and healthy snack, Outstanding Foods Pig Out “Pigless Pork Rinds.” My fave flavor is the Nacho Cheese tho there are now four other flavors: Hella Hot, Texas BBQ, Salt & Vinegar, and Original Flavor. 25 Grams of Protein Per Bag so these bag boys are guilt free! Kudos to Chef Dave Anderson for perfecting an idea he manifested and tried on us way back in 2009 at his incredible vegan restaurant Madeline Bistro. Bro, you nailed it! And thanks to CEO Bill Glaser for always finding ways to get these out to more places every day. If you haven’t tried these yet, now is your time. Problem is, you won’t want any other snack after trying these! Cheers to your continued success Outstanding Foods Team! #outstandingfoods #billglaser #chefdaveanderson #piglessporkrinds #delicious #packedwithprotein #bestsnack #myfave (at Besties Vegan Paradise) https://www.instagram.com/p/CEXqiCHjMI63PF9mnn0lsOQc1jK6eUxiDnUljo0/?igshid=1i80xxzji6m0y

This ‘Vegan 7-Eleven’ Wants To Change Perception of Plant-Based Food
This ‘Vegan 7-Eleven’ Wants To Change Perception of Plant-Based Food
Courtesy of Peter Pham/Foodbeast
Say hello to Bestie’s Vegan Paradise in East Hollywood, California—the vegan answer to 7-Eleven.
From the 1990s to now, the main perception of vegan food was akin to a diet of bark and leaves, with little to no crave-worthy traits. Later in that decade, the concept of plant-based food began to trickle into the mainstream, yet was still relegated to a…
