Begin Again — 02

Synopsis: Harry and Y/N had a secret relationship for almost two years, until they broke up. A year later, she shows up at one of his Love On Tour shows.

Y/N wasn’t sure what her best option was. She had three running through her mind, trying to decide in just a few seconds what the best possible outcome could be.

One, she could simply act as if she had never read that message. After all, she never opened his texts, she just read them through her notifications on her phone’s lock screen. She could simply reply in half an hour that she didn’t see them on time and that she was already close to her home, and that the show was amazing. 

This way, she’d simply avoid what she dreaded the most; the awkward conversation about how they’ve been. 

Two, she could simply stay in the pit and follow what he told her; wait for a bodyguard to retrieve her to get her backstage. It wouldn’t be the first time, but the difference was that this time, she wasn’t alone, and they weren’t dating anymore. She’d need to tell both Maia and Natalie about the little huge secret she kept.

They didn’t know anything about it because Y/N had become close friends with them until the pandemic ended and life returned to normal —going back to classes on January 2022— and by that time, she had recently ended things with Harry.

They had broken up in December 2021 and throughout that semester (August-December), she had been traveling with him on his North America tour, meaning she decided to take all of her classes online, even though some of them were already offered to be on campus with a facemask on.

But then, after the breakup, she came back to the California campus for her final semester, ready to graduate in the summer, which she did. There was where she became a very close friend to Maia and Natalie, so technically, she never lied to them about it.

She had mentioned months ago that she had an ex-boyfriend, and how they dated for almost two years before things got complicated and broke up. And yes, she had told them his name was Harry, but that was about it.

She wasn’t sure how her friends would react if the Harry she had told them about was nonetheless, Harry fucking Styles.

And finally, her third option would be to tell her friends that she’ll make her way home later and that they should start getting ahead. What excuse was she going to tell them? She had no idea. And honestly… she knew that neither Maia nor Natalie would want to leave her alone, so this option was almost impossible.

“Are you okay?” Natalie interrupted her thoughts, and that’s when Y/N noticed she had been stuck in her tracks, staring at her screen while she tried to figure out what she should do. “You’ve been standing there for about a minute looking at your phone.”

Maia and Natalie were both looking at her with concern, and for a moment, Y/N felt somehow bad that she was ruining their good moods with her own worries. Minutes earlier, they were thrilled, ranting about the show nonstop, and now, it seemed like the mood between the trio died a little.

Y/N was highly expressive with her facial features, which was both a curse and a blessing, and for that, she knew she couldn’t lie about how she was feeling. But, that didn’t mean she couldn’t say a tiny white lie to lift their concerns.

“Yeah, nothing to worry about,” She shrugged their concerns off, plastering a smile on her lips, “I just got a reminder of something work-related, a few things I need to get done before Monday.”

Maia groaned, “I don’t even want to talk about work right now, I miss being a university student, and simply pushing all the work for Sunday night.” Her comment made the girls laugh, remembering the stress they’d feel trying to complete a whole long assignment in just three hours.

“Stressful times,” Natalie commented with a chuckle, before checking the hour on her own phone, “It’s almost eleven, do you guys want to crash over at my apartment, or do you want to go out?”

And that’s when Y/N decided which was her best option, to leave right now with her friends and act like Harry never asked her to stay back to meet with her backstage. Her past relationship would remain a secret, and she wouldn’t have to explain everything to her friends. 

Later in the night, she’ll simply reply that she didn’t see it in time and that the show was amazing.

“Even though I’m just 23, I’m tired already. So much jumping, dancing, and screaming.” Maia replied, to which Y/N agreed. “I’d love to crash at your place and just order some takeout.”

“Perfect,” Natalie replied, and hooked both of her arms with her friends, “Shall we?”

As the three girls resumed their way to the exit of the pit —which was already more on the empty side— they talked about the number of feathers that decorated the floor. It was crazy, really, the number of colors that fans brought to each show.

Y/N loved it.

“Wait!” Maia stopped the girls, and turned to look at them with a grin, “let’s record a quick Tiktok! The one where you stand in the pit with a straight face, and the song Static plays up, and you’re like ‘the concert ended, what now?’” 

But before Y/N could say that she wasn’t sure about it, due to the fact that she wanted to leave the place as soon as possible and avoid the bodyguard who’ll come to retrieve her in a few minutes, Maia was already pulling both girls to the barricade alongside her.

In the blink of an eye, Maia had already handed her phone to a random fan who was standing nearby, and the three girls stood side by side. Y/N was wearing her green and black outfit, while Maia wore pink and Natalie yellow.

“Three… two… one!” The girl who was recording them announced to them that the Tiktok was now recording, and the three girls remained serious, their eyes locked on the camera as the girl recording took a few steps back, just like the trend. “Done! I loved it.”

“Thank you so much!” Y/N replied, taking Maia’s phone in her hands. She was beginning to feel nervous, the quicker they left, the less probability there was that she would be approached. The girl simply smiled at her, mumbling a ‘you’re welcome’ and went with her friend, leaving the trio behind.

Y/N handed Maia her phone, and the short-haired girl was quick to post it, typing a quick caption and adding the harrystyles and lotnight5 hashtags, along with tagging Natalie’s and Y/N’s users.

“Okay, now let’s go!” 

And as the trio started to take steps away from the barricade, Y/N let out a deliberately quiet exhale, relief filling her body a few seconds later as she finally crossed the exit doors from the pit and unto the outside of the Kia Forum. 

But, that relief she felt for those few seconds didn’t last long. 

As the girls started to make their way unto the hallway that led to the parking lot, the girl in the green outfit felt a gentle, yet sturdy hand on her shoulder, making her turn around to look for the owner of the extremity, who was now looking for her attention.

Y/N swore she felt her heart falling to her feet as she saw who was now in front of her. It wasn’t a regular bodyguard or another fan that had stopped her —no— it was none other than Jeff, Harry’s manager and someone she had many conversations with (both pleasant and non-pleasant) in the past. He was a friend to her, but he was still Harry’s manager, and he needed to take some decisions from time to time that she didn’t like.

He wore a facemask that covered half of his face, and to disguise himself, he wore a Kia Forum Staff vest, just like the people around the place who worked at the arena. Obviously, he wasn’t dumb enough to come out to the hallways of the Kia Forum with nothing hiding who he truly was, since he knew he’d be surrounded by fans who would recognize him.

“Y/N?” He asked lowly, trying not to raise suspicion or catch fans’ attention. 

“Hey Jeff,” Y/N exclaimed, using a low voice too, putting on a forced smile on her lips. It wasn’t that she wasn’t happy to see him, she used to get along really well with him, but the circumstances were the ones that she didn’t like much. “How you’ve been?”

She knew that there was no escaping now; she’ll face her ex-boyfriend after one of his concerts.

Great.

“I’ve been doing really well, thank you,” Jeff replied and pulled her in for a friendly hug, which she reciprocated. He hadn’t seen her in quite a while, the last time had been almost a year ago when Harry and Y/N had broken up. “How about you?” 

She could see the concern in his brown eyes, knowing that his question didn’t mean just how she had been feeling lately, but how has she been ever since the breakup. 

“Doing much better now.” She replies honestly, making him nod. “What about you? How is everyone?”

Jeff smiled, and even though she couldn’t see his lips, she could see the way his face changed behind the face mask, “Glenne and I have been great, now almost two years since we got married, time flies.”

Glenne was Jeff’s wife, and Y/N loved the woman. The four of them would hang out from time to time, and even though there was a slight age difference between the two women, they got along really well.

“It truly does, I still remember those few days before your wedding when both Glenne and you couldn’t stop rambling about your special day.” As Y/N said those words, she couldn’t help but feel a bittersweet sensation. 

She had attended Jeff and Glenn's wedding back on January 2021 and she had been Harry’s official partner to it, yet it was almost like she hadn’t been. Instead of standing by his boyfriend’s side during the ceremony and holding hands with him, she had been on the opposite side of the place, standing alone as Harry held hands with Olivia.

When the ceremony had ended and everyone moved to the party, her boyfriend finally spent the rest of the night with her. Since it had been in a private location, there were no more public appearances that needed to be done, and Olivia had finally gone home. 

It was until the party then that Harry was by her side all the time, dancing and singing, constantly telling her how much he loved her. 

Y/N had enjoyed that night so much, yet at the same time, she hadn’t.

“Yeah, I remember.” Jeff chuckled, and after a few seconds of comfortable silence, he glanced towards a door a few meters away that said ‘Staff Only’, where two guards were standing, checking that nobody tried to sneak in backstage. “He told me to look for you to get you backstage…”

She felt her nerves increase, knowing that it was all getting very real now. “I know.” 

“If you don’t want to meet him, I’ll tell him that I didn’t find you.” He gave her a way to back out of this, knowing that the ex-couple hadn’t seen each other in a very long time, and the last time they had, it had been filled with pure heartbreak and tears. “I’m still your friend.”

She let out a deep breath, weighing down her options. 

And as she did, she felt a hand squeeze her arm lightly, making her remember that she wasn’t alone. Talking to Jeff had filled her mind with memories of the countless days they had spent joking around on tour. 

Y/N turned to look at the two worried and confused faces of Maia and Natalie, slightly turning her back to Jeff.

“You okay?” Maia mouthed to her, not wanting to cause a scene if her friend didn’t actually know this man or wanted to converse with him. 

She nodded, “Yeah, he’s a good old friend.” Y/N gave them a reassuring smile.

Natalie quickly glanced at him above Y/N’s shoulder, and smiled playfully, “If he has access to backstage, tell him to get us Harry’s autograph, and we’ll pay him!” She jokingly (which wasn’t much of a joke) whispered to her.

Y/N stayed silent for a few seconds, knowing that there was a small, deep part of her that would hate herself if she let this opportunity pass. Even though she was scared to talk to him, to see him again after everything, she knew that she’d regret not doing it.

Besides, her close friends deserved the truth about her so-called ex. 

“Yeah, about that…” Y/N turned to look at Jeff, and gave him a quick nod, telling him in a simple gesture her final answer, before turning to look at her two friends. “You’re about to meet him.”

The Curse Of Hackett's Quarry

Chapter 2 - The Hermit

Summary: After the events of a traumatic night, Emma Mountebank finds out she still a werewolf. While she learns how to deal with this new reality, new problems and feelings come to surface. Pairings: Emma/Abi, Emma/f!OC

Full Story:

The Hermit card generally indicates a period of soul-searching, introspection and solitude. A period of isolation attempting to heal from a difficult situation. 

The morning after her first transformation, Emma had a hard time cleaning herself before heading back to her dorm in college. She was so exhausted and sick that she missed classes for the next two days.

The second transformation by the end of October wasn't any easier, but she was more prepared this time. She knew what to expect and had enough time to improve the safety measures.

The third transformation was a little less painful. Emma started working out regularly, increasing it significantly by the week of the transformation. She wanted to run a few tests and it worked. The impact of the shifting was more bearable when her body was in a better shape. 

The last full moon of 2021 was the most terrible of all, considering Emma got very sick after waking up in the woods with her clothes torn off, during a cold Winter morning. 

She had never escaped from her restraints, so far. And with her mother being a dentist surgeon, she had no trouble stealing sedatives to keep the creature drowsy. Her priority at the moment was to find somewhere safe and warm where she could transform without any risks to herself or to other people. 

In her old bedroom, at her parents' house, she felt comfortable recording a video again. Not to post online or to show anyone. But she had to vent about everything that was going on.

"People are finally starting to forget about that fucking incident at that cursed Summer Camp. My respects to Mr. H and his family - I hope they found peace, but…" It was sincere. Emma liked Chris and his kids. She lamented their Summer ended in such a tragedy. She didn't know the rest of the family, but the other counselors, who had closer encounters with them, were scared. They seemed kinda dangerous. "I haven't. I'm not allowed to move on. That night will never end, at least for me."

At least the journalists stopped trying to contact Emma or her parents again. The negative comments about her around the internet decreased too. After an episode of the 'Bizarre Yet Bonafide' podcast about Hackett's Quarry Summer Camp, more people started to believe their innocence.

"Everyone else is moving on with their lives - Abi is going to Art School, Kaitlyn is traveling the world, Ryan has started his own podcast, Nick is taking a sabbatical year, Dylan is studying quantum physics and Jacob… well, fuck Jacob. I blocked him everywhere. The thing is, I wish I could do the same. But instead I'm… surviving. I'm learning to adapt to this new fucked up reality."

She hadn't told any of the other counselors she was still infected. No one had called her in months. Yet, she'd check their socials on a daily basis, searching for signs any of them could be struggling with the same issue. Which wasn't happening, after all she was the only one who was bitten by Silas Vorez. 

"And the question remains… if Silas is dead, why am I still infected?"

January 2022

There was a reminder flashing on Emma's cell phone screen. Full Moon. That was the reason why she had spent the whole morning working out hard. Now, she was starving and ready to devour as much food as she could. Her appetite had increased significantly that one time. 

"Hey, Abi," Emma attempted to call her best friend again while she followed to the campus restaurant. "How have you been? I… I'd love to hear from you. I can't wait to hear everything about Art School. Call me."

"Hello, Red Hood," she heard a familiar voice right behind her. Penelope Dalton. One of the popular girls who wouldn't leave Emma alone. "Who's Abi?"

She ignored the question. Back in High School, she used to be one of the popular girls too and she knew exactly how annoying and cruel they could be.

"Maybe she hasn't called yet because she was taken by the Big Bad Wolf," added Christina, one of Penelope's friends, raising giggles from the rest of their cliqué.

"Or maybe," Penelope continued, "she's a decent person who stood up by her friend, Jacob. After all, we know who caused that bloody fight in the camp, after a Truth or Dare game."

The incoming transformation always triggered Emma's worst moods. The mention of Jacob's name still ignited something inside her, feelings she was trying to bury. She automatically felt her skin burning, as well as the adrenaline pumping in her veins.

"Shut. The. Fuck. Up."

Emma attempted to close her eyes and take a deep breath, fighting the urge to go feral and teach that girl a lesson. 

"Or what? Are you going to kill me and cry wolf ?"

Her attempt to be funny raised laughs. People were starting to reunite around them to watch the fight. 

Less than one second later, Emma's fist hit Penelope right in the eye. It'd certainly leave a nasty bruise.

"Your psychotic bitch! Look what you've done!"

Penelope advanced in her direction, pinning her to the ground, where she started pulling her hair. Emma's reflexes were increased due to her incoming transformation. Although Penelope was taller, soon Emma managed to switch positions and get on top of the girl, slapping her face hard.

It didn't take long for the campus security to arrive. In the end, Penelope only signed an incident report and Emma was punished with a disciplinary suspension. She was also warned about her recurring absences. 

During High School, Emma spent all those four years dreaming of college. Now, she didn't know if she wanted to be there anymore. She still could pursue her acting career without that.

After that Full Moon, she decided she wanted a break to find herself again. She decided to quit college and find herself a job. 

It wasn't an easy task. Not because she wasn't skilled, but whenever people ran a background check, she'd get rejected. People were still afraid of the negative attention her presence could bring.

That small diner in the heart of New York City was her last resort. 

"Name?" The owner, Addison Davies, asked while taking notes on a paper.

"Emma," she told, making a pause before adding her last name. "Mountebank."

The woman didn't seem to be paying too much attention, what gave her some hope. Maybe she wouldn't research her criminal records after all. 

"Do you have any experience as a waitress, Emma?"

"No, but I'm a quick learner. I'm also an aspiring actress, which means I have a lot of charisma dealing with people."

She was about to speak about her experience as counselor, where all the kids adored her. But she stopped herself. 

"An aspiring actress?"

"Yes. I signed up for a few auditions but while I don't have anything in sight, I need another source of income."

"When can you start?"

"Right now?" Emma furrowed her brows, already expecting another rejection.

It didn't happen. Either that woman didn't read the news or she really didn't care. 

"Great, come with me and I'll show you what to do."

Addison was very satisfied to see how good she was doing and how quick she learned. She never asked any questions about Emma's past. She even agreed to give her an extra day off, during one specific day of the month. 

Getting a new place to live was Emma's next goal. Her parents weren't happy when she dropped out of college. Living under the same roof was becoming impossible. They argued most part of the time. For many years, Emma did everything to please her parents and fulfill their expectations, but right now, she had other priorities in mind.  

During her free time at the diner, she'd check the newspaper for announcements.

"Looking for a place to live?" Jenna was Emma's co-worker. She treated her well since the first day, giving her some useful tips. They were becoming good friends. 

"Yes, do you happen to know any?"

"One of my roommates just moved out after graduating. Ben and I could really use somebody else to help with rent."

Benjamin also worked on the diner. He was more quiet and introspective, but very friendly. 

"Do you mind if I check it tonight?"

They lived in a studio apartment. The bedroom was large and comfortable, but what caught Emma's attention the most was the basement she noticed once she entered the building. According to Jenna, it was always locked and never used by anyone. That could be the solution to all of her problems. During the Full Moon nights, she could just lock herself in there.

"Do you think the landlord would rent it for me?"

"I don't know, you could speak to him but… why?"

"I… uh… I could use some space to record my videos and rehearse for my auditions, you know?"

Jenna didn't ask any further questions. Emma spoke to the landlord in the same week she moved to the studio. After selling her car, she paid him some cash to have exclusive access to the basement. As well as the permission to make a few adjustments.

Emma had everything prepared for the next Full Moon. Metal chains to restrain her body were installed in the basement. She didn't want the risk of an accident, in case somebody ever decided to open that door to investigate possible noises. There was also a small bathroom in there that she could use to clean herself when she became human again.

"What kind of videos are you recording down here?" Ben was in the basement, holding one of the chains attached to the walls. Wondering if she had forgotten to lock the door, Emma almost dropped the supplies she was carrying downstairs - snacks, water and fresh clothes.

"Horror. I'm really into horror movies and… I've been doing some auditions for a role in the genre."

"Every once in a month?"

She let out a breath. It was obvious they'd notice someday, but she didn't expect it to be so fast.

"Huh?" In that moment, Emma prayed she was really a good actress. She forced a confused expression. "What are you talking about? I come here everyday. When you're still at the diner."

"You were in a terrible mood earlier today," Ben crossed his arms, staring at her with a suspicious look on his face. "And you're the most cheerful and energetic person I've ever met."

"Have you ever heard of PMS?"

Benjamin let out a small laugh, before adding:

"You lost control of your strength and accidentally smashed a glass in your hand this morning."

"I'm a little clumsy sometimes," Emma lied again. 

"You made a deal with our boss that you couldn't take night shifts on one specific day of the month and the following morning," she never assumed they'd notice that one detail. "Each one of these nights have Full Moons."

She raised her hands defeated. Ben didn't look scared or even upset. He didn't even show any surprise.

"Don't tell anyone. Please? I'll find another place to live. I just need some time."

"I can help you, Em."

"What?! Why?! Are you out of your mind? I have no control of myself. I'll kill you."

Benjamin sat on a chair and asked Emma to sit too, in front of him.

"West Virginia. My uncle. One night he was hunting in the woods, when he got bitten," he started telling. "At first we assumed it was an animal, but… after that he'd transform every Full Moon. We had to keep an eye on him, to prevent him from slaughtering people."

"And…" Emma stared into his eyes. "Is he cured now? Did you find a way to break the curse?"

"He went missing," Ben answered after a mournful pause. "Dead. Most likely. The neighbors started noticing something was off."

Emma swallowed dry. If she wasn't careful enough, that could be her fate too.

"Do you think anybody else noticed something is wrong about me?"

"No, I only noticed because I became familiar with the signs. But you should tell Jenna. She's at nursing school, she could help you with the tranquilizers."

And like that, her roommates became her 'Wolf Pack', as Emma liked to call them. They didn't mind covering her shifts or staying awake monitoring her werewolf form through the cameras they installed in the basement. A shotgun with silver shells was always prepared in case the worse scenario happened. 

The mornings after her transformation were the worst. Emma would feel exhausted and sore. She'd spend hours under the shower, where she'd let her emotions flow. No one had seen her crying yet. All the time, she acted tough and confident. No one could tell there was something so traumatic going on in her life. But in the loneliness of the early hours of those mornings, she felt like a scared lonely child.

April, 2022

After months of agony and misery, everything seemed to be falling in place, but Emma still couldn't feel like herself. She'd still attempt to record videos as she used to do in the past. But it wasn't the same. Her venting always came back to the same subject. She couldn't even post that online - people would assume she had definitely lost her sanity. But at least it was a good kind of therapy.

Ben and Jenna were helping her with an extensive research, but she couldn't find any clues that lead to an explanation of why she was still infected.

"Ugh," she placed her laptop away from her. "Not even the detective I hired could find any information about Eliza and Silas Vorez. It's like they never existed."

"They were probably using fake names," Ben suggested. "The woman kept the guy caged like an animal. That's certainly illegal."

"We should try a psychic someday," Jenna said. "Do you think they'd know anything about werewolves?"

"I doubt it."

"The Deep Web?"

"Oh, no. Ben taught me how to access it and I found some very… disturbing stuff there."

"I warned you about the werewolf kink," Ben said, letting out a laugh.

"Please, don't say it again," Emma made a disgusted face. "I wish I could unsee it."

"Anyways, it's your birthday tonight and we should definitely go out to celebrate."

It was the first time Emma wasn't excited for her birthday. All the previous years she'd throw wild parties and crowd her house with friends. Now, she barely left the apartment. She was either working at the diner, researching werewolves and once in a while, she'd sign up for auditions. So far, her only work as an actress was a small internet ad she did to promote Addison's diner.

"Happy birthday to me," Emma spoke to her cell phone's camera later, when she was lying in bed. "I turned nineteen today. Yay!"

"It was different from my other birthdays. I didn't get so many messages or gifts. No wild parties either. No, crazy parties actually. I don't like the word 'wild' anymore, now it reminds me of…"

She didn't finish. It was always hard to say it aloud. Even to herself. 

"I went out with Ben and Jenna to try to forget about… that thing . Sometimes I can allow myself to act like a normal girl and have some fun. I met some people during our night outs. Guys and girls too. But dating is not an option right now."

"I mean… how am I supposed to even squeeze a relationship among all this crazy shit that has been happening to me? I know some freaks have a werewolf kink but I bet they'd run away the second I burst into that bloody mess of a monster."

"There's one person though… nevermind."

She turned off the camera. The person she had in mind hadn't even called her yet. Not even to wish her a happy birthday. 

June, 2022

It was the beginning of another Summer. Almost one year had passed since that last night at Summer Camp. Emma was on her lunch break when got a call from an unknown number. Her heart skipped a beat - she was expecting a call about an audition she had done a few days later. But she never imagined the voice on the other side of the line would ruin that little balance she was attempting to keep in her inner world.

"Emma? It's me, Abi."

"A-Abi?" The corners of her mouth curled up in a smile. "It's… uh… it's been a long time. How have you been?"

"I'm home from college and I was wondering if you'd like to hangout."

2022 Roundup

Here we are again. And by "we" I mean just me, because not even my momma asked for this year-end summary.

Per usual, 2022 had its ups and downs:

DOWN: The commercial agent who signed me in April 2021 left the company at the end of the year to start his own. He never got me one single commercial audition in those ~9 months.

UP: Their new commercial agent decided to renew my contract in April 2022 after a zoom meeting. She got me a handful of commercial auditions within her first few months for legit clients like Estee Lauder, Forward, NBC Universal, and Kate Spade.

DOWN: In July, the agency decided to dissolve their commercial department altogether. Womp womp.*

UP: Also in July, the short film I made with my cousin Marisa in July 2021 finally premiered at home at the St. Louis Filmmakers Showcase, and our supportive family got to come see it on the big screen with a packed audience. Being of the horror genre, it had a surge of screenings at genre festivals around Halloween both at home where it was shot and in LA where Marisa and I live. We even won BEST FILM and BEST EXPERIMENTAL at two horror fests.

Other than that, I did lots of self-taping and had a few callbacks - both on zoom and in person (which I'm mentioning for the sake of historical reference). I was cast in a feature that was then cut down to a short film, and my character was cut with it. I did get to shoot an Amazon demo for their new palm payment technology + a music video with a lifelong musician friend.

I joined an actor training group in May that I wish I had known about during the pandemic. It's all online and covers all facets of acting: the craft, the business, and the mentality.

For the second half of the year, a lot of my energy went towards my brand new camper van rental business venture. Inspired by the newfound prospect of a "free" filming location, I spent September outlining a feature film starring my new Sprinter van. Hopefully, I'll get around to shooting something in it next year.

*Since this blog is really just for me... for the sake tracking my acting career... let me just write out my history of representation:

My 1st agency out of college repped me in exchange for free labor (internship). I was with them for 2.5 years, until they dissolved their entire agency. (March 2010-Sept 2012)

My 1st manager repped me, because I sent her a blind submission email asking to meet with her. We met, and she liked me. Very straightforward. I was with her for a little over 3 years, until she decided to focus on coaching and managing her child actor clients. (Jan 2012-March 2015)

My 2nd agency repped me, because I took acting classes from the commercial agent. My manager had suggested her class to me, so I took it for 1.5 years, and she loved me. They signed me across the board. I was with them for almost 3 years, until they decided to rep only their literary clients and dissolved their entire acting division. (June 2013-Sept 2016)

My 3rd agency added me to their commercial roster because of a blind submission (one email and one phone call). I was with them for a little less than two years, until they dissolved their commercial department. (April 2021-Dec 2022)

If the business is hard for actors, it's just as hard for their reps. If I'm not making money, they're not making money.

Apparently, I went without representation for most of the years when I was producing my own work through Shy Ruby (2013-2019). My agent/manager hiatus also perfectly aligns with the moment in Hollywood when Casting Director workshops were being shut down and exposed for the cons that they were (c. 2016). From the moment I graduated from theatre school in 2009, I was signing up for 2-3 workshops per week ($50 each), to sit through about 30minutes of Q&A before performing a quick scene for a Casting Director (or more likely, a Casting Associate or Assistant). I spent hundreds and hundreds of dollars. I got so many compliments and words of encouragement, but maybe only a handful of actual auditions from essentially paying to audition for them. Anyway, it's just interesting (to me) to follow that trajectory and understand why I was jaded enough to step back from Hollywood and only work on my own stuff for the latter half of the 2010s.

Crawling my way back to digital art: A story of my art journey

Hi, I'm Alyx. I'm writing this post to share my art journey story and to hopefully inspire other artists to get their spark back and create art again, especially to those who have also stopped creating due to getting burnt out from art/life, but all along or recently have been aching to return.

So, here goes my story:

The first digital painting I created was when I was a little kid. My software: Microsoft Paint. My painting: the classic house drawing composed of the basic shapes surrounded by all the nature elements – trees, flowers, a smiling sun in the corner or in between the mountains, butterflies, and all that. I loved art class the most (hated PE the most). I graduated elementary school with the "Best in Coloring" award. I also got all the "Best in Science" award and all that, but what made me the happiest was the art-related one. I really loved coloring. I love colors.

And then everything changed when the fire nation attacked: I got into a science high school.

A little open secret: Our high school contract doesn't allow students to enroll in a non-science course in college unless we pay millions so... you get where this story is going.

In high school, I had been sketching here and there, but never fully; algebra & chemistry was killing my brain. By the near-end of it, during the review for college entrance exams and on our 4-month vacation after graduation, I was really craving to digitally paint again (all along). I joined DeviantArt (but my initial account is gone because I deleted it... lesson learned: don't), tried entering contests (submitted traditional and digital pieces but never won a single one), and just drew and painted whatever I liked (mostly girls) in anime style. This time, I installed and used PaintTool SAI and used my laptop touchpad or mouse to paint and/or make lines.

I enjoyed the seemingly little time I had before the fire nation attacked again: I got into college with a really toxic science-related course that damaged my mental health. Again, algebra & chemistry, my life-long nemesis.

These were the darkest years I've had in my life for several reasons other than academics, but the journey through this dark tunnel has been dragging on for so long that when I was just about to come up for air, the pandemic happened. Wow, it really doesn't end. Back then, we didn't know when and how the pandemic will end, right?

I thought, if the world was ending, I might as well be spending my remaining time on earth creating art.

There was so much more I wanted to do; wanted to paint; wanted to learn. I refuse to die without achieving all that.

So, after graduating and getting my degree (alive, thankfully), it was time for the board exam review (I hated it). Back then, everything was held online. There were times when (plenty) that I find myself fingerpainting portraits on my mobile phone instead of listening attentively to the board exam instructor. I joined the art community on Twitter and got exposed to so various art styles and talented artists. Since the exam schedule got postponed and postponed, I had a bit of time on my hands.

August 2020: I got my very first pen tablet! Of course, with the limited time I have (before I face the reality that I need to take the board exam and get a job to survive this capitalistic world), I spent my nights and hours painting like a madwoman. I skipped learning the basics because I felt like my time was running out. I just drew whatever I wanted (again, anime, girls, and portrait art mostly), became active in the Twitter community and interacted with fellow artists, did commissions, joined DTIYs, participated in some free art talks and workshops online, made art for my friends, etc.

April 2021: I was able to upgrade my equipment and bought an affordable pen display using commission earnings! I was really so happy with it. Don't let anyone tell you equipment don't matter, and passion would suffice. My output was better quality-wise; the even the painting process I found more enjoyable.

Shortly after then, my time has ran out.

I took the board exam, passed and got my license, got a corporate job to pay the bills... you know, the typical path you follow to survive. I work in a field I'm really interested in and been learning a lot from, but it had me so burnt out in all aspects during the first 2 years or so that I basically had no time for anything else, even myself. Life had been playing its hardest games too. Eventually, I hid myself from the art community and kind of accepted one night that if I want to survive, I cannot pursue art in this lifetime.

Well, that sounded so depressing (it is) so let's skip to the part where I'm (trying to be) *drumrolls* back ;w; Right now, I'm blessed with a bit of overall balance in my life – time, security, energy, health, and passion.

This year 2024, I was able to wander through art exhibits, galleries, events, museums; was able to traditionally sketch something again last February and June; finished a digital painting piece to retrace my process last August; and ongoing some art classes/lesson assignments September-October 2024 (currently anatomy~). It really is a big thing to me that I'm incorporating art into my life again little by little.

You know, I think consistency is different from person to person. To me, being consistent is being able to show up at least once or twice a month to have a digital painting session or doing my lessons – because that's what I'm capable of giving right now whilst trying to survive in this world; doesn't matter if I finish a piece or a lesson, at least I made even a tiny bit of progress. Afterall, small progress is still progress, right?

I guess, what I wanted to say is that:

You can pick up your pen (stylus) and start again.

The most crucial tool to have in 2024 is a phone. It is a calculator, alarm clock,  flashlight, mp3 player and it connects us to things like Google, Amazon, or social media sites like Facebook or TikTok. 

Social media single-handedly changed how people utilized their phones, and it is one of the greatest advancements that came out of the technological era. But what is social media? According to  Freberg (2021), it has many definitions. Social media has the capacity to “bring communities together, break down barriers, raise awareness of world issues and create movements to spark impacts.”  These are all evident by the various world issues being seen around the world, how quickly challenges spread to various parts of the world and how campaigns such as #MeToo, #BLM and #PRIDE bought awareness to their causes. 

But is that an actual definition of social media? Yes and no. With the ever-changing advancements happening within social media, it encompasses the above definitions and so much more. The official definition as stated by Freberg (2021) is that Social Media is “a personalized, online networked hub of information, dialogue, and relationship management. These new communication technology tools allow individual users and organizations to engage with, reach, persuade, and target key audiences more effectively across multiple platforms.”  

In simpler terms, this means that social media is a group or collective of people, like minded or not, who have the capacity to create, share, connect and interact with others like minded or not. I would also define it as a platform used to communicate, relay ideas, and create. Applications like Zoom or Google meet are used to connect loved ones or businesses via electronic video conferencing.

Although I use social media every day, I characterize myself as a passive user who uses easier platforms like Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and Pinterest. And while I am not an overly active user, I do post things I am enthusiastic about whether it is pictures or recipes of gluten free foods. Endless scrolling is a pastime I am trying to curb so I currently limit how much time I spend online. 

My strength in understanding social media is contingent on what my children understand. I could say I try to understand concepts or review the diverse types of platforms, but it is not true. I tend to stick to Facebook for funny sayings, Instagram to find out local eateries and Pinterest on how to make those recipes. I am willing to research newer platforms, but I quickly abandon them if they  are not adult friendly. My other challenge about understanding social media is how quickly things change. The minute I master one platform an updated version is available, and it can be overwhelming to try to stay relevant in an ever-changing world. And I lack the willingness and the patience to learn newer platforms when I am content with the older ones. With my children back in school now, and I cannot call them when I can figure out how to post a picture!!  

In this class, I would love to learn how to manage and create content using social media. I am hoping to gain and improve my understanding of utilizing social media to advance my writing career, and to develop strategies on how to craft and create a successful digital footprint as an author. Understanding which platform works best, is most popular and easy to use will help my understanding of social media and allow me to use it for my benefit. My children would thank you.

This Life

2019-2024 Did you ever find yourself trapped in a loop? Perhaps in ways you don't expect. Dan did. She never realized that she was trapped in a loop of love, pain, abandonment and loneliness.

Grade 6:

Was it real friends? I see everyday and find ways to make sure we have something to talk about so they dont find me boring. I fought a lot with others, I liked a boy who always asked me for help and advice when it comes to two things: His homework, and the girls he's pursuing. I got influenced into many things, got into trouble many times. Was I an introvert? A shy girl? I called myself a loser, a geek, whatever (Hah I was a theater kid if you get my reference.) Being that I am, I got exposed online-- in a bad way. I learned things I shouldn't be learning, and I was talking to people online where I shouldn't have been at that age. There was someone I met online, he understood my musical references and without thinking I joked that I've found my "soulmate". Boy was I stupid. While crushing on a classmate, I kept up my chats with this online friend. Oh it was getting bad... Chat me up, all day, all night. It was fun, I was being sneaky. Oh calls and video calls, voice message and more. Then he starts asking for pictures... Pictures Pictures Pictures. Ah so wrong what have I done? Not just that but a friend of mine was a very bad influence, I am not so sure what he was-- A friend? An enemy? I can't tell. I should have stopped myself, but oh how I liked the attention? It was class crush's birthday, it's summer and I just woke up. Oh no- mom drags me out my bed, shoves my phone to my face. The fear plastered on my face! She slaps my cheek, throws the phone to the window (I'm shocked it didn't break!) Ah bad bad bad time, she found out about Online boy. It was for the best. We didn't even love each other lol, he just asked for pictures and I...was a desperate child who wanted attention.

New Life: Mom took me out of that school, removed all my socials, and cut me out of society.

Grade 7: Starting my highschool life in homeschool

Ah it was fine, I had my own schedule. I was doing fine, I became a better student. I'm okay with this life... I have no teachers and classmates though, it was just me and the professors in the pre-recorded videos. My desk and my laptop and...Google (ahaha). Oh my, I'm lonely... But oh hey, I learned about Quotev, Ao3, and Wattpad...! Oh no. Here we go? I read, and read and read and read and read and read! This is my life now... I started hoarding books~ With that, I got into role play--(we all go through this dont act like im a weirdo) And I fell in love...with writing. I started working on an idea that based on a What If question I had at one of the sleepovers I had with my cousin (She made me watch animes and we role played together and wrote different short stories)

2020-2021

Grade 8-Grade 9: No friends like Fiction, Am I right?

I forgot how to be human, oh if you all could see... Long hair, glasses, dark clothes, nose stuck in a book, no sleep at all-- From the morning I studied and studied, at night I read til bed. Did I enjoy it? Yes. But at the present now, it is only a feeling. I don't recall what I read, I don't even remember what my brain rots were about! I continued my story ideas, brainstorming with my cousin actively (Oh which reminds me. Since I had no phone nor any socials, I chatted her through emails, hangouts, skype and pinterest--Ikr those were desperate times if I had no phone...) So yeah, we continued that story...Thats one year of working on it and it seemed pretty good. Life was okay like this...

Okay not really, so I mentioned I was into role play and that I would chat my cousin on pinterest. I was finally trusted to have a phone again but no socials still. But since I had pinterest...That meant I found someone to role play with me in that app... Goodness i'm stupid! So sneaky once again, a little bit of role play getting a little twisted and wrong in so many ways. Ah here's the shocker, I was talking to a GIRL! Oh this was the start... Of so many more problems. My mom found out about this one and once again, no phone (wahhh TT) But it was only for about what two? three...no four? I think six months yes. So how did I message my cousin? Well this was the time of the pandemic and jobs were hard to find... My dad took up a delivery job! So I wrote letters to her and had it sent weekly--It was creative and fun to do so. We traded books and wrote updates on our lives. I miss her. Back to topic, I can NOT be trusted with a phone haha. But I was anyway... and oh... no no, Homeschool was fun and all but I'm always alone. My family realized that and forced me to join christmas parties, camps and clubs and gathering... Nothing amusing for me I meet people, I laugh, they think I made a friend...I never speak to them again. Funny right? Anyway I joined an art club from my school which was online, that and a Writers Guild. The art community is in a group chat so guess what... My phone was given back to me, there I met a friend (Lets call him J) He requests collaborations with me and I was always happy to help a fellow artist. Oh yes don't worry, J is a good fellow and is still a very present and active friend to me right now. But there was a time that J invited me to join his discord server (ah yes my cousin introduced me to Discord) So I did join J's server full of other homeschool artists, it seems that it was a DnD role play group and he wanted us artists to play some roles! Oh sure of course, I agreed. I met his friend. (Lets call him Cat) Cat and I did not get along, oh no we started off quite weirdly. But oddly enough that feisty banters we have lead to something... Aha you see where I'm going? Yes Stupid once again was I! We knew each other for what...A year? after that stuff happened and...we got together and lasted...three months.

Ah it was a Sunday I'll never forget. I had a meeting with J and Cat online, J had some concerns he wanted to address. Ah...He felt like we shouldn't be together because he fears of the worst outcome for his friends... I didn't listen to him... I didn't...when I should have!!! I was supposed to continue the meeting but then my mom took my phone! (ARGH for the best but I hated it when it was so random and snoopy) She found out about me and Cat... aha again? Okay, again. But it gets worse. Oh it was a fight, she took my phone again and I stayed crying in my room until lunch time. She refused to see me, okay so in a whirl of emotions what did I do...? I was dumb so so dumb. I put on my slippers, grabbed the nearest bag and left. I ran away. (Worst case scenario, this is during Covid. I was in my pajamas, and I was wearing nothing but my bra inside my sweater. Oh and the bag I took? It had no money, nothing inside except... My old Harry Potter figurines! I had my smart watch on but it was dying!) So yes, I ran away. I walked and walked thinking, where should I go? So I walked headed towards a tower from my view, okay I'm almost there, I took an overpass and got lost. Hmmm, I planned to take a bus, oh but I have no money... Two men approached me. Oh shit. Oh they're trying to help me because Idfk where I'm going! They're asking for my destination, I say where, and one of them took their helmet, gave it to me, and gave me a ride on his motorbike. (First time to ride one by the way) I got to where I was headed, he asked me why am I headed there? I need a lie! I said I was going to meet my dad there. So he left me at the place of which I asked. As he left, I planned to cross the road, my next destination? Well my old house (Not exactly but the subdivision there, maybe I can stay at the park?) Oh but I was inexperienced, I was going to cross a main road! Right as I was about to cross a bunch of guards called out to me, told me what I'm doing would get me killed if I took another step. They lead me to an underpass. So I took that. I crossed the underpass and headed towards the place I wanted to go. Still so many problems... It was hot, I was wearing a sweater (again I can't remove it bcs I wasn't wearing a shirt under) and I didn't eat lunch, didn't have any water, and have been wandering aimlessly throughout. I was close now about....another 6-7 kilometers or so... I was stupid to think I'd reach it without passing out. I staggered as I walked, I hit a tree and a long branch fell on my head. I used it as a cane I guess. Then another man showed up, called out to me, I ignored him. He tried to give me money, I felt guilty so I refused. He tried to let me let him help me. (Wow tongue twister-I could word that better) Eventually I realized this man is a grab driver... Okay I took his offer to drive me, he offered to buy me lunch and so I ate a Mcdonalds meal. At first he asked me where I was headed. Panicked and not wanting him to know I said the address of my old school from 6th grade, which was nearby. He took me there and then asked me again. Where am I really supposed to go? Ah shoot he caught me, So I gave in. I told him to take me to a subdivision (my old place), He asked me, Why? I said I'm looking for my dad. And he told me he thought I was a foreigner, and asked for my name, and If I could understand him. Oh he fed my cover, so sure I said I was from another country, I said I was looking for my dad, and that when he asked for my name I panicked again inside my head, I saw a bike pass by with a plate number with the letters "XIAN" and so I told him my name was Xian. He took me to the subdivision, and left me at the park... Ah but he wouldn't leave me alone! He followed me even as I got out the car... goodness! He parked and came out again, he asked if I was okay, and in desperation I was walking in circles around my cousin's house (we were neighbors). So I asked him if I could borrow his phone, and he did, I messaged Cat, said my explanation and my situation, said my goodbyes and asked for one last favor.

Remember when

Hey, remember when I told you our greeting was too long? One hour a day, four times a week. My time with you was never enough so I asked you to say our greeting quickly so I could have a bit more time with you even if it’s just 5 seconds. Remember when it was teacher’s day and you wrote me a note? They were all lovely and they never failed to make me cry. Sometimes I wondered why I kept my job when I wanted to quit so many times. Then I read all the notes, all the letters I keep in that pink box under my bedside table, and remember you’re the reason I kept going.

Remember in 2021, it was my first time teaching online. None of us were prepared. It was a lot of work preparing the lessons and I was always stressed out about it, for having even lesser classes with you, and for having a low attendance but you told me my lessons were the best so I kept going. Remember you wrote me emails, sent me short stories that I loved to read so much, and I would doodle little hearts around your sentences?

Remember you would draw something on your writing book, and I would draw something back with my red pen? “Draw a square if you’re underpaid,” I still remember that. Drawing rockets, or animals, or flowers. Just anything that’s not related to what I told you to do, but you did it anyway. Always made my day. I miss just holding a pen and twirl it around with my fingers, I miss just talking in front of the board, and looking at you as you listen to me. We would argue on so many things. How do kids get so smart with their words? Either kids are getting smarter or that I’m getting dumber.

Remember when I told you about Thailand, and all of us got sad, we cried. I didn’t know how to tell you properly and I didn’t think it was going to be this hard but, it’s almost three months later since I left, and I still think about my teaching days like they were just yesterday.

Remember even after I left, we couldn’t stop talking on the phone. Some of us played Roblox together, even. My almost 30 years old self told me, “This is so childish,” but I was your teacher for six years. I’m too used to being around children being childish, I have become one. The kids were always loud, and now it’s just too quiet.

I know we can’t possibly keep this going any longer. All of us might need to move on sooner or later. All of us live different lives, and we’ll grow apart. We can’t escape that. I wonder if it’s hard for them going through everything, with me or without me, but I can confirm having a hard time moving on myself.

I know I should give myself a break. It’s a big change, quitting your job, moving to a strange country, leaving behind a life worth living but it is what it is, I guess.

I have all these photos, videos, our memories on my phone, but I can’t seem to bring myself to look at them without breaking tears. I wonder how it’s going to be when I get over this, or if I ever get over this. How long will it take me to be happy with this new life? How long will it be until I can really live, again?

Growing Up

My mother didn’t grow up with the same lifestyle that I did. She is the middle child and the eldest daughter of the family. Her father was a Customs employee and her mother was a seamstress. When she was thirteen years old, her father died leaving her mother as the sole breadwinner and caretaker of the family. As a seamstress, my grandmother did her best to put food on the table and to pay the tuition of a private school for three kids. She used to live in Malabon (where my grandfather lived) and they were supposed to move to Malinta when my grandfather died. They didn’t move there and instead, sold the house and returned to my grandmother’s hometown. 

In Nabua, many of my grandmother’s relatives either served in the United States Army or the Navy and many of them worked in the US. My grandmother’s brother also worked abroad in Italy, which meant that they had money. Because they were poor, other members of the family treated them differently. One memory that my mother shared with me was a time when she and her sister were going to church. Their uncle had a jeep (which at that time was a symbol of wealth) and happened to pass by them and offered them a ride. As my mother and aunt were getting in the jeep, it started moving. They were offended because they felt like they were being treated as a charity case and that their uncle only helped them to boost his ego. “Just because [they] were poor and offered a ride, doesn’t mean that you get to treat us badly”. 

Another memory that my mother shared was the time she and her sister had to share the hand-me-downs of their younger cousin. My grandmother was the guardian of her brother’s children as both he and his wife worked in Italy. To compensate for not being there, they always gave balikbayan boxes to their children. So, their cousins had almost everything they could wish for, while my mother and aunt would only have what my grandmother could give. Once, one of them had to use the old shoes of their cousin, who was younger and smaller than them. It was painful because of the size difference, but they had to persevere. They had a difficult childhood while growing up, but times were changing. My grandmother was able to put them through college.

My mother met my father during the baptism of my cousin. My father was a “bunkmate” and worked on the same ship as my mother’s cousin. After a few months of courtship and a year of engagement, they married in December 2003 and I popped out in September 2004. Although my father was the main breadwinner, without my mother, they would not have been able to establish what we have today. They went through hardships, such as my tita scamming them, and came out stronger together. 

Reflecting on my qualities

My mother recognizes that she is an anxious person. She also has a tendency to catastrophize things in her mind immediately jumping to the worst conclusion. An example of this was when a few days ago, before our interview that day, my mother left more than 20 missed calls on my phone. Apparently, she got scared that someone broke into my unit and hurt me all because I didn’t say good morning at our normal time. (I woke up late because I had no online class that day, so I couldn’t say hi). My mother takes pride in her meticulousness. She has a keen sense of design and aesthetics. She practically decorated our entire house. She also finishes everything that she sets her mind to. She is also a sensitive person who is attuned to the emotions of others. 

Health and its effects on behavior

Recently, my mother was diagnosed with an iron deficiency and was prescribed supplements. This wasn’t a surprise since her sister also had anemia and I had low blood pressure. There has been a link between anemia and anxiety. The symptoms of anemia and anxiety overlap, such as fatigue, chest pain, and shortness of breath. Some symptoms of anemia can cause anxiety itself. (Sweeney, 2021) When my mother gave birth to me, she also had some complications which led her to have a cesarean section. During her pregnancy, her anxiety worsened especially during her last. When my mother was pregnant with our youngest brother, she was already 39 years old (which is considered a geriatric pregnancy). Because of her small vaginal canal, she could not give birth naturally and the consecutive cesarean section operations greatly thinned her uterus which made her complicated pregnancy even more complicated. Her last pregnancy was plagued with anxiety and she was scared that she would die. Anxiety seems to run in the family as my cousin has been diagnosed and is currently receiving treatment for her generalized anxiety disorder. 

Lessons in Life and How to Deal with People

From her past experiences, my mother has always given me these four pieces of advice. Choose people who choose you. This saying has always been my mother’s catchphrase. My mother is a kind person who had a tendency of letting other people walk all over her. Because of an event (that was asked not to be shared), her mindset and outlook in life changed. She no longer allowed people to take advantage of her kindness and chooses to be with people she knows care about her and ones that would not betray her. This ties into her second piece of advice, Know your crowd. Choose to be with people who you will feel proud that you know. People who will not lead you astray are the people you should be with. People influence each other and if the people that you surround yourself with are a bad influence, it will negatively impact you. The third piece of advice that she gave me was to Choose a husband who has few siblings. One of the hurdles in my parents’ relationship was my father’s siblings. My father has ten siblings and they had the tendency to abuse my father’s kindness. When they married, my father’s siblings never liked my mother because they feel as though she was taking him away from them (physically, financially, and emotionally). My mother asked my father if they could live in Bicol rather than in Leyte, where my father grew up and since he is no longer a single man, his siblings were no longer his to provide for because he was already starting a family. The physical distance between them also led to emotional distance. Because of that, our family was essentially excluded from family events such as reunions and gatherings. One of my aunts also insulted my mother to her face and scammed her. My mother says that fewer siblings mean fewer people to please. Lastly, my mother says do not loan out an amount of money that you are not willing to give away. Loaning out money has always been difficult in our culture as there is a tendency where the people who are loaning the money neglect to pay. Instead of chasing people to pay you, make sure that whatever amount you loan out, you will not mind if it does not come back. If someone does not repay you, then never let them lend money again. 

Piecing it together

My mother’s attitude towards life becomes clearer once you reflect upon her own experiences and her health. Since she was left behind by her father at such a young age, she had to cope with the loss of not only a father figure but a source of income. Although they weren’t poor, they weren’t well-off either. Her financial situation at the time led her to develop certain behaviors. Our grandmother highlighted the importance of education which was why she made sure that all of her children graduated from a private university. She deeply believed that education will help them rise above their station and it did. My mother also became a frugal person who hates waste because they did not have the capacity to waste anything. While there are two schools of thought regarding this topic, I am leaning toward both nature and nurture. The environment surrounding my mother and her biological health greatly affected the way her behavior and attitudes were shaped.

How could I forget my 4 beauties

Yes, as I said here:

My poor lil heart. I love them so much.

Ok I'm going to share when my heart fell in love with those 4 children.

So I met them in 2020. Well the 2 oldest ones. I didn't really remember them so much because I was closer to some other children that year. Those seen and heard here:

However when I returned in 2021, I got closer with those those children, some others I didn't remember and my 2 oldest.

You see I met my oldest daughter first but she's the 2nd born. SHe was always assisted by those around because she is cute, obedient and agreeable. However I saw how many seem to like to cuss her out for the things her mother was responsible for. So when the others who'd help left, I took the mantle. I think she loved that I didn't cuss her. I saw her caution. I developed a love for her by caring for her the best I could. It was easy. I look forward to watching Shrek a MILLION times as she loves that movie.

Now the oldest who I became conscious about next was after I was caring for his sister. When I took responsibility while others watched and cussed out the child instead of help. Was when the parents was having their drama and may have involved him. One night the father came home drunk and cussed him out and threw out his stuff and destroyed his phone (what he needed for online school). This little boy found his way traumatized and lost on my porch. I think he knew he could trust me. So that night is when I learned he hadn't been to online class (covid time) in over a month. So I decided to help.

Then when I realize so many more problems. Some i don't want to share here. However basics is, mother gone (due to domestic quarrel) and father works all day to provide and they were left with grandmother but she leaves to work too. Point. he the boy at 9 was responsible for his 2-year old twin siblings and sis (who was staying by others/me most times). Hence why I made this video:

I thought those adventists, especially those who couldn't have children would love to help. BUT NOOOOOOOO. Then God says I must take ALL 4. By then I didn't know the twins or fall in love (as a mother) with them yet. I was just starting to fall in love (as a mother) for the oldest

Especially when I saw this boy more than past his exams that were coming up and important. I mean he wasn't in class, nor studied. I sat beside him and saw him connect dots from video games he played to understand his class tests. He was VERY SMART. I saw it and it was effortless. That made me want to help. However seeing him slowly learn to trust me was when my motherly instinct and love kicked in. I mean, he had school work and because he heard his sis was watching videos and more, I think he wanted to do the same (I didn't get access to her school work to help her there). But I put my foot down.

This boy ran off to his grandmother's house. I went by, NOT to force him, but to tell him food is at the house if he wanted it. He came back. Guess what as well. Next time he wanted his own way, I feared he would run every time. But he didn't. The distance shortened every time. The next time was the porch crying hysterically, then the corner of the living room, then it became a discussion on how unfair it was. Which I understood. However, he had to do his school work (I found work for his sister to do as well). That was FUN. I mean seeing him learn to trust me was MAGIC. Then I had to understand he feared getting beatings. Something he got OFTEN and severely.

After I helped him with his schoolwork, the people around were jealous and start to beat him badly if he went by me. By then I was ok helping from a far and I knew what God asked of me by then. I look forward to the future for his excited rants about Marvel Universe Films or watching them over and over again as he talk them out as it plays.

Now the twins. They were 2-years old that time. That's a young age. It was nice to know that they are potty trained already. However I feared them because toddlers can be a whole lot of WORK. and that's times 2. However I had them all one Saturday. I rarely had the twins. They were jumping off the walls. Well the boy mostly and when I sat him down he wouldn't listen. His sister, would follow him, but he was the instigator of adventure. I was trying to get something for the other ones to do, but the 2 babies as they are wouldn't stay seated. Pulling on the curtains, climbing things. I couldn't sit them down quietly. then I decided to take him up and carry them both outside. Then he was calm in my hand.

My heart melted when i took the closest thing I had (my phone) and started to read the bible. It was just Hebrews, and they both laid their heads on me. I was so broken almost in tears at their action. They just wanted a little love. Not reprimand. They just want a little attention and hug and cuddles. I nearly cried. I mean the boy twin did it again when he was afraid of the water on his face when I bathe them one of the day. Held me so tight like his life depended on it.

Those children just need a little patience and love.

That is what I'm so excited to give and know they'll appreciate it. even if it's not in the moment, but eventually.
