Some Of A Kind
Chapter 1: Virgin in the Chapel
(Michael Langdon x reader)
Summary: When you accompany your friend to a black mass at the Church of Satan. You pick the wrong time and place to let him in on the fact that you’re a virgin, garnering the attention of the ‘chosen one’ himself.
Warnings: murder, mentions of drug use, poorly represented Satanism
Word count: 3,666 (that’s right)
//
It was a typical Wednesday night when you got a text from your friend Tyler.
‘So what do you say? Is tonight the night?’
He had been bugging you for weeks to come see a sacrifice at the satanic church. And since the first time he asked, the conversation always went the same way.
/
“I’m telling you, just one slice and then you can have whatever you want”
“You mean I can have powers beyond compare?”
“Yes” he answered back, in a hopeful tone. Clearly he hadn’t picked up on the sarcasm in your voice.
You couldn’t help but chuckle at the excitement in his voice.
“I’m sorry, you do whatever you want over there with your edgelords but I’m perfectly happy in my boring powerless existence”
“First of all we aren’t edgelords, we're satanists. We just see the world for what it is. A dreadful place full of selfish people.”
“Well I can’t say I argue with that”
“Exactly, so give in to being selfish, and start doing what you want. You work so hard, and for what a one bedroom apartment you can barely afford and bags under your eyes that are only getting bigger by the day?”
“Hey” you interrupt, slightly offended. Which only earns a laugh on his end.
“I’m just saying, you put in so much effort for no pay off, when you could do this one thing and have everything you deserve”
“What a cable package and a ‘skip the line’ pass at Disneyland?”
“I also get unlimited snacks!”
“Oh sorry how could I forget, well if one soul is all it takes to get a free waffle cone then what are we still doing here?!” You ask back, your tone full of mockery.
“Have you ever wondered why I can snort as much coke as I want and have never OD’d? Or why every girl I bring home is a certified 10?”
Actually you had, the two of you had met the year prior in a religious studies class when you were partnered to write a paper on whether morality was dependent on a god. He could barely get through a sentence without tripping over his words or looking away in embarrassment. It was sweet really, and by the end of the class you two had basically become best friends.
But about 2 months ago things started to change. There was almost always a girl leaving his house when you would come over.
You swore at least two of them you recognized from Victoria Secret runways.
One night you even saw a man leaving whose resemblance to Ryan Reynolds was suspiciously uncanny.
He got a new car without any explanation as to where he got the money, and he had so much coke in his living room you assumed he started dealing, before he told you it was just his stash for the weekend.
At first he was vague about everything, but eventually he told you the truth, or at least what you assumed was a version of it.
For his final project he wrote a research paper on the church of Satan.
You went with him to a couple of services when he was writing it, him being too nervous to go alone.
You both thought they seemed a little kooky, but relatively harmless.
Yet what you didn’t know was that he kept going back after the class ended and had gotten himself sworn in, and eventually given the honor of participating in a black mass.
Where he had sacrificed a school teacher in order to get these new “gifts”.
Now you weren’t naive enough to think he actually killed someone!
You were sure his new lifestyle was a part of some religious Ponzi scheme, and one day the debt collector would come calling.
You’ve watched enough documentaries to know better than to get involved with this.
But he is still your friend so you take it upon yourself to be supportive and let him have his moment, while simultaneously letting him know you’ll be here for him if the day comes that he gets excommunicated.
“I love you and I am so happy for all you’ve gotten, especially when you share it with me, but I’m good, really. I’ll let you know if I ever change my mind”
That dropped the subject for a while.
That is until a few days ago when you lost your job.
Well actually when your job was stolen from underneath you by your boss's son.
All it took was one night of bitching to your best friend for the talks of satanism to start up again.
//
So here you were bored on a Wednesday night actually considering his offer to watch a black mass.
‘Well…’
He texted back after a few minutes of no response on your part
‘Fine’
It’s not like he’s ever going to let up, you might as well go see what all the hubbub was about.
After he picked you up, you made your way to the church.
More precisely the back alley with a hidden door. Not at all unsettling.
And the rain pelting down on the robe he gave you just adds a nice ominese touch to what you're sure is going to be a long night.
Now inside you sit in a pew in the back. While the choir above you sings as the others file in.
They actually sound pretty good if you’re being honest. Maybe on your way out you’ll pick up the album you saw for sale in the lobby (for $6.66 no less).
You haven’t been sitting more than 10 minutes before the mass begins.
And in that time Tyler roughly explained what you were about to see.
You weren’t paying too much attention though. More enamored with the atmosphere.
It was a sea of red cloaks and black pentagrams. And the thunder outside appeared to clap along in sync with the crescendo or the choir.
This place seems vastly different from the shabby collection of misfits you encountered when you visited the first time. Who spent most of the service complaining and handed you a stale donut on your way out the door.
“...Y/n are your listening?!”
“Hmm Yea”
“Really?”
“Yea the guy’s gonna sacrifice some ‘innocent soul’ say a few hail satans and voilà he gets his hair back and starts getting laid again” you answer back, waving him off. You’re more interested in watching two Satanists in the front of the room give each other the “sign of the cross” gesture in reverse order.
“This is serious, the things you see might shock you but you can not react! If they think you’re some sort of threat to our secrets or even just afraid of them, it won’t end well. I’m kind of taking a risk by bringing you here”
That brings your attention back to your friend.
“So you hound me for weeks to come with you, but I’m not even allowed to be here?” You ask back, starting to wonder why you actually said yes to this.
“Well yea, I just really want you to see what I’ve seen, I want what’s best for you”
That was actually really sweet of him.
Now you felt a little bad for making fun of this so much.
That is until you see a man in the next row pull out a flask with “unholy water” written on it and rub it on his chest like Vick’s.
But before you get the chance to ask Tyler where he keeps his flask(which you're certain he has). The choir stops singing and the Priestess has the room's attention.
Everything goes as Tyler explains at first.
The “sacrifices” are brought in in their underwear. (They couldn’t even keep their clothes on, what does the devil give them a level up if the victims are humiliated before they die?) and tonight's chosen one, Phil, is about to take his position, before you hear a voice behind you.
“Wait!”
You turn your head to see an older woman rushing in, but it’s not her that steals your focus it’s who walks in behind her.
He is quite possibly the most attractive person you have ever seen. With cheekbones that could slice butter and soft blonde hair falling around icy blue eyes.
She says his name is Michael and this honor belongs to him.
You look over to Tyler to see what’s going on. He didn’t explain what part of the performance this was, was this some sort of second act surprise?
You were expecting this night to follow like a church service, watching Phil take his vows and minimal audience participation. Now you wonder if this is all rehearsed, or if the Satanist’s are partial to improv?
But Tyler pays you no mind, he can’t take his eyes off the blonde either.
It’s not until the Priestess mentions the “mark of the beast” and that he is the chosen one, that you get why Tyler is looking at him like he’s some sort of god.
Because to him he is, this guy is supposed to be the Antichrist.
Tyler says nothing only glances in your direction when he sees you’re the only one still standing, before he pulls you down to your knee like everyone else.
The rest of the performance is really top notch.
The flickering of the lights was a nice touch, but you can’t help but feel a little uneasy wondering how they keep getting the thunder to time up with everything they do.
Plus the bodies of the sacrifices fell to the ground almost too well.
How did they manage to get their bodies to look that lifeless, and why did those cuts look so deep?
But you try not to focus too much on it as you walk to the ceremonial Wednesday night potluck.
/
After the Antichrist has dismissed his followers from fawning all over him, you sit with Tyler at the end of the table and dig into your lasagna.
“So does the antichrist part happen at every sacrifice or is this one special? Is it some Satanic holiday I wasn’t aware of?” You ask, breaking Tyler out of whatever trance he appears to be stuck in.
“What?”
“I gotta say the dramatics were very entertaining, but if you really wanted to get me here all you had to do was tell me the guy who plays the Antichrist is really hot” you snicker under your breath.
“Play? Y/n your don’t understand he IS the Antichrist” he explains in a hushed voice before continuing
“That doesn’t happen every time, he really has come. This is the moment we’ve all been waiting for! Don’t you see?! I think it was fate you came here on this night!”
“Ha, why do you need a virgin to sacrifice or something?” You laugh and take another bite before you look over and see Tyler staring at you with wide eyes.
“What?”
“You’re not serious are you?”
“Well yea, what’s the big deal, I didn’t realize you were so caught up on a social construct”
“I’m not, but you can’t say things like that around here” he looks around the room nervously and you follow his path of vision until your eyes land on Michael, who’s own gaze is locked on you.
There’s no way he heard you, you were across the room and you were whispering.
Still he continues to stare with eyes that speak only of intensity. No smile, no nod, no hint emotion whatsoever.
It’s only after you raise your brows and mouth a “What?” That he looks back down at his plate with a hint of a smile on his lips.
“Oh Satan, I think he heard you. You should go” Tyler’s tone becoming more erratic by the second.
“What?” You’re sure he's joking, but when he looks at you there is nothing but worry in his eyes.
Now you’re starting to get nervous, this is too far.
He actually thinks these people are going to do something?
He’s practically shaking with fear, and because of the man in the turtleneck? Who barely knows how to hold a spoon?
Okay you’ll play along for tonight, but tomorrow you are having a serious talk, he might need professional help.
“Alright let's go then” you huff out as you start to grab your belongings.
“I can’t just leave, especially since our savior is here, but I’ll make sure everything is good and you’re not followed or anything”
“Okay, is there some sort of satanic shuttle bus that can take me home? Or should I call an Uber? Does this place have an address or should I just send them an inverted cross?”
Still unamused by your inability to grasp the gravity of the situation, he just shakes his head and hands you his keys.
“Here just take my car, I’ll get a ride later, in fact stay at my house incase you’re followed”
He’s basically pushing you out of your seat and nodding to the door.
“Okay...bye I guess”
And with that you take off down the hall.
You know you’re supposed to go straight to the car. You’ve never seen Tyler look so serious in his life.
But when you walk past the chapel you can’t help but stop. You can still see the bodies up at the altar.
Why are they still there? Was there a trap door you missed and these were just doubles?
Or were these people so committed to the role and as crazy as your friend that they had to stay in the character of “dead sacrifice” all night?
Curiosity got the better of you, the car could wait, you had to see for yourself.
Closer inspection did nothing to stifle your suspicions.
It looked so real.
They weren’t breathing, so there was no way they were still the two actors, but you had never seen fake bodies look so real.
You're reminded of an anatomy class you took last semester.
Those cadavers looked suspiciously close to these.
Just colder and with less life left in their faces.
And there was so much blood, the iron was thick in the air.
But that couldn’t be true. Your friend wouldn’t kill someone would he?
He didn’t actually think they would kill you?
If you got a closer look, if you just swiped some of the “blood” with your pointer finger it would surely taste like corn syrup and not like…
“Are you afraid?”
You whip your head around, blood still staining your finger and beginning to drip onto the linoleum. To see Michael walking in the same way he had an hour earlier. Only this time without the cloak, but with some newly added confidence.
“They’re really dead aren’t they?” You know it’s true, but you still wait for his confirmation.
“Yes, that tends to happen when you slice someone’s throat” He acts as if this shouldn’t be a shock to you. It didn’t shock any of the other members of the congregation. Yet you know without him saying it, that he’s well aware you’re not like the others. That you don’t belong here.
“So you really sacrifice people, just to get stuff” you blurt out. Still trying to wrap your head around the fact that everything you witnessed tonight was real. Perhaps you shouldn’t have taken that last crescent roll you’d seen another satanist eyeing at dinner, you definitely have a curse coming your way. That is if you live through the night.
“Well not me” Michael says, pulling you out of your thoughts and back to the present.
“Oh of course, you’re the one they do it for”
“Well my father more specifically”
“Does that upset you?” You know you should be more careful about how you proceed with this conversation, but the words leave your mouth before your mind can stop them.
The question seems to catch him by surprise as he ruffles his brow, you’re not sure if it’s in anger or just shock at your brazenness. But he doesn’t answer. Just goes on to question you.
“Have you ever witnessed a murder before?”
“No”
“How did you feel watching it before your eyes?”
“Well I didn’t feel much, considering I thought it was all fake” That earns you a smile from him.
“And how do you feel now?”
“Curious”
“Really? Not scared?”
“No. Why should I be?” You’re really digging your own grave here. But your mouth seems to have a mind of its own.
“It seems your friend would say otherwise”
“Ah so you did hear.” You say, seeing his smile grow wider. “These aren't the days of the Old Testament, virginity doesn’t equally purity. Just ask sacrifice number one over there, with a body like that I doubt she was a virgin” you laugh, partially at your joke and partially out of sheer uncomfortableness. Michael doesn’t even spare the bodies a glance, eyes latched onto you, you go on to add
“I’m no saint. Despite my sexual history, or lack thereof”
“No, I’m sure you’re not” he emphasizes by swiping some of the liquid from your finger with his own, before taking it into his mouth. Making a show of it by closing his eyes as he releases it from his lips, slow as molasses. Smiling when he opens his eyes and sees you’re practically drooling.
Before his little show can go any further, you continue with your own questions.
“Have you killed people before?”
“Yes”
“How many?”
“You don’t have the time”
He’s looking at you waiting for your response. Waiting for the shock to subside and the shrieks of terror to take over.
Instead you just pause thinking everything over.
You should be scared, you know you should.
In one night you have watched two people die, found out your friend is a murderer, and that the Antichrist is not only NOT a myth, but is standing in front of you, conversing with you like he’s nothing more than your new neighbor.
Yet you search and search in your mind for any hint of fear and come up empty. All you feel is curiosity. You must be losing it too, you feel bad for judging Tyler so harshly. Maybe it’s his youthful face and the little outburst in the dining hall earlier, but Michael seems like more than simply the ‘incarnation of evil’. He seems so...human.
And more than anything he just seems confused and dare you say, lost.
“Do you like killing people? Or do you do it because it’s expected?”
“It depends”
“Would you like to kill me?”
Now it’s his turn to take pause, looking like he’s trying to decide if he’s “in the mood” to take your life.
“Not right now”
You can’t help but laugh at that (yea you’re definitely in shock). Soon enough he joins in too, and the mood feels lighter than it has all night. You might even say you feel comfortable.
That is until the laughter subsides and you meet his eyes. He’s now staring at you with the same intensity you’d met earlier at dinner.
It’s like he’s looking right through you, into your soul. You feel on display and more than anything afraid of what he might find.
“Stop that”
“Stop what?” He says with a playful tone and a tilt of his head.
“You’re..well..I don’t know what you’re doing but I don’t like it. You’re trying to get a read on me or something.”
He just smiles at that, because of course he does.
You know there is no avoiding playing into his hand. He wants to get a rise out of you, in one way or another.
“And what do yo-”
“Y/N!”
At the mention of your name you both turn to see Tyler standing in the doorway.
Antichrist or not, the look Michael gives him is enough to send a wave of fear up your spine.
He appears as though he’s about to snap his neck through just a look(and you're afraid to find out if he could).
Noticing his anger, Tyler stops and bows before Michael, apologizing incessantly for interrupting him.
You don’t miss the twitch of Michael’s lips. He’s clearly loving the effects he has on his followers.
You just roll your eyes at your friend.
“Calm down Tyler, get up”
He just let’s your words pass over him as if you hadn’t even spoken. If he hadn’t been the one to call your name a moment ago, you wouldn’t be sure he even knew you were in the room.
Every sense he had was aimed at Michael, and it was only when his precious dark lord gave him a nod that he got up and looked your way again.
“What are you doing? I thought you were going home?” He says through clenched teeth.
If he weren’t so worried about keeping you alive he would be pissed at you for not listening.
“I was. I am” you reassure him turning to Michael.
“It was a pleasure to meet you Michael, I’ll see myself out”
You are scurrying out of the room, grabbing a frozen Tyler and tugging him along with you, when Michael calls after you.
“No y/n, the pleasure was all mine.”
You’re at the end of the hall, and in the middle of Tyler’s scolding session, when you realize there is still blood on your finger.
It feels like it’s vibrating where Michael touched you, begging you to take notice.
Just wipe it on your jeans, you tell yourself.
Wait until you get to the car and find a napkin.
Do anything rational other than what you're thinking.
As you pass through the exit door, you cave and take a taste of the crimson on your finger.
Although you can’t see him, you know Michael is smiling. You can feel his smugness in the air around you and you're sure he knows what you just did.
This started out just as me wanting to make some jokes about Michael and the Satanists and has somehow turned into a multi-chapter fic. I still don’t really know where it’s going I’m just letting it take on a mind of it’s own. If it looks familiar it’s cuz it’s been on ao3 for a little bit now, so sorry it’s not a “new” new story! If you liked it that makes me very happy, and if not I hope it was at least entertaining! Either way thank you for reading!
(I wasn’t sure who wanted to be tagged just in my Xavier fic and who did in general so I didn’t add a tag list to this one)

My Top Ten Victorian (Ish) Romance Novels
Notes: Queen Victoria’s reign lasted from 1837 to 1901, but I learned in a literature class that sometimes the Victorian era is defined as lasting from 1832 (when the First Reform Act was passed) to 1901 (when Victoria died). When it comes to historical romance novels, I think the second definition works better; a romance set in 1831 usually comes at the tail end of a series or universe beginning in the 1810s/1820s and still has a Regency flavor, while a romance set 1832-1836 has a decidedly non-Regency feel. Incidentally, I’ve noticed that 1830s-set Harlequin Historicals are labeled “1830s,” rather than “Regency” or “Victorian.” No one knows what to do with the 1830s! Also, many of these novels are set in the USA. Three are specifically set in Chicago, which is kind of weird!
1. The Heiress Effect by Courtney Milan (2013)
Exact Setting: 1860s England.
Premise: Politician Oliver Marshall has ambitions of enacting egalitarian laws, including the proposed Second Reform Bill, but his illegitimate birth and non-aristocratic upbringing make that an uphill battle. Then a marquess makes him a peculiar offer: in exchange for supporting the Second Reform Bill, he wants Oliver to publicly humiliate Jane Fairfield, an heiress who is despised by high society for her bad taste and oblivious rudeness. Oliver, too often the object of aristocratic bullying, has no desire to harm Jane, but he doesn’t feel that he can refuse the marquess outright. Then he realizes that Jane isn’t what she seems; instead, she’s a brave, clever, lonely woman who’s putting on an act so she can stay unmarried and continue protecting her younger sister. Also, he likes her and finds her wildly attractive, despite her nightmarish fashion sense.
Why I Like It: This is my favorite romance EVER. Jane is an all-time-great heroine: intelligent enough to engineer a complicated marriage-repellent scheme (and change it when circumstances require), strong enough to expose herself to ridicule out in the world (and come home to an uncle who thinks she’s inherently a bad person), and vulnerable enough to break your heart. Oliver, a bruised idealist who must reassess his go-along-to-get-along approach, is nearly as compelling. Their romance is full of top-notch banter and solidarity in the face of a world that wants them to be enemies. And there are almost too many excellent subplots to count: Jane’s sister’s secret romance with an Indian student at Cambridge, Oliver’s younger sister’s foray into activism, and Jane’s brittle frenemy-ship with the Johnson twins, to name a few.
Favorite Scene: The first time Jane drops her act in front of Oliver, or the defeat of the marquess.
2. A Hope Divided by Alyssa Cole (2017)
Exact Setting: North Carolina, USA, during the Civil War.
Premise: Marlie Lynch's life has always been complicated. The daughter of a free Afro-Caribbean root worker, she spent half her childhood with her mother before being sent to live with her white paternal relatives. Now she works for two different secret organizations: the Underground Railroad (with the help and approval of her white abolitionist sister) and the black-Unionist-run spying organization the Loyal League (with the knowledge of no one). When she’s not doing that, she’s pursuing her scientific interests while still honoring and using her late mother’s rootworking practices. Her situation becomes even more fraught when she agrees to harbor Ewan McCall, an escaped Union POW, in a secret chamber behind her bedroom wall. They bond over their shared intellectual interests, but is there any time for romance when Marlie’s home is being overrun by loathsome Confederates?
Why I Like It: Many historical romances have good love stories but don’t do much with the setting, while a few excel at portraying the past but fail at creating a compelling central relationship. Alyssa Cole’s Loyal League novels are the total package, and the Southern-Gothic-tinged A Hope Divided is the standout among them. Marlie and Ewan’s courtship is portrayed with tenderness, intelligence, and delicacy. Cole brings just as much sharpness and nuance to her portrayal of the time and place, representing groups of people who tend to disappear in popular discussions about the Civil War. I also really appreciate Ewan as a character. His mind works differently from most people’s (in that he would probably now be considered to be on the autism spectrum), and he worries that he’s a bad person because he doesn’t feel a lot of angst about some morally complicated decisions he made in the past. The narrative does a good job of showing that Ewan is no better or worse than anyone else for using tools other than empathy in his moral reasoning. Also, Marlie is a top-tier Gothic heroine.
Favorite Scene: Marlie reflects on the villain’s oh-so-convenient conception of Southern womanhood. I’m also a big fan of the entirety of the bedroom-wall courtship.
3. The Suffragette Scandal by Courtney Milan (2014)
Exact Setting: 1870s England.
Premise: After his hateful father and self-serving brother abandoned him to a grisly fate in war-torn Strasbourg, Edward Delacey narrowly survived, with his faith in himself and the world around him shattered. Now he’s back in England, and his younger brother stands to inherit the viscountcy that legally belongs to him. He’s not interested in the title; however, he does feel compelled to stop his brother from ruining the life of Frederica Marshall, a daring investigative reporter who writes about discrimination against women. As he lends his (jaded, reluctant) assistance, Frederica’s optimism begins to infect him...and that’s not the only reason he wants to stay around her.
Why I Like It: I love Frederica as Oliver’s little sister in The Heiress Effect, and she’s even better as the cocksure firebrand heroine of her own story. It’s rare that a heroine is allowed to be so successful in her chosen field at the beginning of a romance novel, but Milan accomplishes this while still giving Frederica enough vulnerabilities and flaws to make her interesting. Yet Edward, a wounded cynic who chooses to do good despite believing that he’s a garbage bag and the world is a shit-pile, is what really pushes the novel to all-time-great status. Their story is a wonderful illustration of the best things that love can do; his faith in the world is revived by her ideals, and her worst impulses are tempered by hearing about the lessons he’s learned in his darkest moments. Plus, they have some really funny banter.
Favorite Scene: Edward explains why torture is ineffective and wrong. (I put years of hard work into getting my torture degree at torture college! Fuck off!)
4. After the Wedding by Courtney Milan (2018)
Exact Setting: 1860s England.
Premise: After her father was accused of treason and committed suicide, Lady Camilla Worth was passed from home to increasingly shabby home, eventually fading into obscurity as Camilla Winters, a housemaid in a corrupt clergyman’s home. Adrian Hunter, the son of a black abolitionist activist and a white duke’s daughter, is visiting the clergyman in disguise to gather information when he and Camilla fall victim to a dastardly plot. Force to wed at literal gunpoint and thrown out of the house, they must work together to annul their marriage and get to the bottom of the clergyman’s sinister doings.
Why I Like It: Camilla is the first bisexual heroine I ever encountered in romance, so I was already primed to love her, but it would’ve happened regardless of her orientation. Desperate for any kind of affection after losing her family in a particularly cruel way, her struggle to find love while trying to protect herself is extremely moving. Adrian also has an affecting arc, in which he learns how to let go of family members who don’t really care about him and acknowledge his grief for his brothers who died in the Civil War. Finally, the conspiracy plot is absolutely explosive.
Favorite Scene: Camilla deals with trauma through legal research.
5. An Unconditional Freedom by Alyssa Cole (2019)
Exact Setting: USA (mainly Illinois and Mississippi) during the Civil War.
Premise: Daniel Cumberland once believed that freedom and justice would prevail for black people in America, but then he was kidnapped and enslaved for several months. Now free, he works for the Loyal League, fueled not by hope but by pure rage. Janeta Sanchez, a mixed-race Cuban-Floridian lady from a wealthy Confederate family, is also working for the Loyal League...as a double agent, because she believes that’s the only way to save her father. Paired with Daniel to gather intelligence about possible European aid, she begins to question her loyalties as she sees more of the world and gets to know the people her hypocritical white family has kept her away from. Daniel, meanwhile, begins to see a way of coping with his trauma and an uncertain future.
Why I Like It: Historical romance often shies away from the worst parts of history, or at least frames them as remaining firmly in the past. Alyssa Cole not only starkly portrays the horrors of American slavery, but also confronts head-on the terrifying realization that things do not inevitably improve over time. Yet Cole’s frankness doesn’t reduce the novel to a horror show; there is plenty of joy and kindness and hard-won hope between Daniel and Janeta. Deceived and guilted by her family into supporting an appalling cause that hurts her, Janeta is a complex heroine who develops wonderfully throughout the novel. Daniel is also one of the best-written heroes in romance. Finally, as in A Hope Divided, Cole sheds light on an aspect of the Civil War (the involvement of Europe) that doesn’t get a lot of attention in popular culture.
Favorite Scene: Janeta and Daniel talk alone for the first time.
6. Wild at Heart by Patricia Gaffney (1997)
Exact Setting: 1890s USA (Chicago, Illinois).
Premise: Lost as a child and raised by wolves in the wilds of Canada, the Lost Man has been discovered by “civilized” people and forced to “live” with a Chicago anthropologist for study. (Really, he’s being held captive.) Only Sydney Darrow, the anthropologist’s widowed daughter, has the sense/compassion to say, “Hey, maybe we should treat this man like a person and not keep him locked in a glorified cell where a disgruntled employee can taunt him.” She gently introduces the Lost Man back into human society, and the two find themselves getting along better and better. But can the Lost Man ever truly adjust to the human world? Or will he forever express his love by giving dead fish to people? Or is okay, sometimes, to express you love with dead fish?
Why I Like It: This is one of the most bizarre romances I’ve ever read. It sounds like a romance that someone made up for a sitcom. It sounds like a fever dream. It’s absolutely brilliant, too, because Gaffney commits. The Lost Man thinks of everything in animal terms; he accurately identifies Sydney’s aunt as the “dominant female” of the household, he has decided opinions about which animals are neat and which ones are pains in the ass, and he shows his love with a beautiful, freshly caught fish. There’s a real sense of loss in his arc; it’s necessary for him to transition into human society, but he’s also lost a beautiful, meaningful world. His romance with Sydney is also a great version of the Monster Boyfriend story; she’s the one who sees his humanity and recognizes many of his more “animal” traits as positive. The backdrop of the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition is also charming.
Favorite Scene: Michael reflects on who’s hot (otters) and who’s not (wolverines) in the animal kingdom.
7. To Love and to Cherish by Patricia Gaffney (1995)
Exact Setting: 1850s England.
Premise: Jaded Anne Verlaine moves to the tiny village of Wyckerly after her wildly unhappy and unpleasant husband Geoffrey inherits a viscountcy. They’re greeted by Christian “Christy” Morrell, the local vicar and Geoffrey’s childhood best friend. Christy is dismayed to see the man Geoffrey has become, but he’s even more disconcerted by the attraction he feels for Anne...who returns his feelings.
Why I Like It: Although she stopped writing historical romance in the late nineties, Patricia Gaffney remains one of the most stylistically inventive and emotionally intense authors in the sub-genre. Anne, a warm and witty bohemian atheist, is a wonderfully unique heroine, while the sweet and scrupulous Christy is a similarly refreshing hero (and, really, an ideal clergyman, with high standards for himself and hardly a judgmental thought towards others). Despite the (delicious) angst involved in their relationship, they’re one of the most convincingly happy couples I’ve seen in romance; they don’t just grow close because of sexual chemistry or their shared complicated feelings about Geoffrey, but also because of their shared interests, oddly compatible senses of humor, and respect for each others’ differences. The village of Wyckerly is vividly portrayed, plus Gaffney makes great use of Anne’s writings and correspondence with Christy to shape the narrative.
Favorite Scene: Anne gets angry with Christy for being so good in the face of Geoffrey’s bullshit.
8. Silk Is for Seduction by Loretta Chase (2011)
Exact Setting: Mid-1830s England and France.
Premise: After emigrating from Paris to London, Marcelline Noirot and her two younger sisters started a dress shop catering to newly rich and middle-class women. Thanks to Marcelline’s innovative designs and her sisters’ sales/accounting skills, they now stand a chance to be the favorite shop of the entire aristocracy...but first they need an early adopter. Help comes in the form of Lady Clara Fairfax, a beautiful but dowdily dressed girl who’s starting to have doubts about her perfect-on-paper betrothed, the Duke of Clevedon. As Marcelline devises a new wardrobe for Clara and spends more time with Clevedon, it becomes more and more clear that Clevedon is perfect...for Marcelline.
Why I Like It: I’m a simple woman; I like elaborate descriptions of over-the-top 1830s fashion. What’s more, I love Marcelline. She’s a fully realized character with interests, talents, and history that have nothing to do with Clevedon; she misses the sweet husband she lost to an epidemic, is anxious to build a future for her young daughter and her sisters, and spends a lot of the book demonstrating her talents in gorgeous detail. Just like the massive gigot sleeves on her dresses, she takes up space. Overall, the romance resembles a really good 1930s romantic comedy; Clevedon is a great straight man, the love triangle is elegantly resolved, and everything just feels beautiful.
Favorite Scene: In one of the best sex scenes in romance, Marcelline tells Clevedon that she loves him, knows they don’t have a future, and wants him for one last night just the same.
9. The Hostage by Susan Wiggs (2000)
Exact Setting: 1870s USA (Chicago, Illinois and Isle Royale, Michigan)
Premise: Beautiful new-money heiress Deborah Sinclair has always done what’s expected of her. When her aristocratic betrothed shows his true colors, though, she works up the courage to tell her dad that she wants out. Unfortunately, Mr. Sinclair is not receptive...and the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 is literally happening around them...and this random dude just showed up to kidnap her in all the chaos! Before she knows it, she’s on a boat to remote Isle Royale with Tom Silver, a rugged frontiersman who lost many of his friends and his adopted son in a mining accident caused by Mr. Sinclair’s negligence. Because Mr. Sinclair was found not legally liable, Tom has resorted to holding Deborah for ransom. Although he has no desire to harm her, he’s prepared to hate the daughter of his greatest enemy; she’s also not too fond of him, given that he kidnapped her and all. As they wait for Mr. Sinclair’s reply on Isle Royale, however, they get to know each other better.
Why I Like It: I never thought I’d love a kidnapping romance that wasn’t Beauty and the Beast, but Susan Wiggs can sell me on pretty much anything. (It helps that Tom has excellent motives, yet isn’t validated by the narrative for choosing to kidnap Deborah.) This is one of the best adventure-romances that I’ve ever read; much of the first act is an incredibly tense, complicated chase sequence through the flaming inferno of Chicago, while the later chapters consist of their trying to survive together on Isle Royale in the depths of winter. The emotional journeys of the characters are just as compelling as their physical ones. One of my favorite romance tropes is when one protagonist feels like they should hate the other one, but instead ends up going “wow, this person is obviously not doing okay...wait, am I worried? Should I help them? Actually, I kind of admire them now???” The Hostage has this trope in abundance.
Favorite Scene: The entire part where they’re trapped on Isle Royale together. So many survival details! So cathartic!
10. The Firebrand by Susan Wiggs (2001)
Exact Setting: 1870s USA (Chicago, Illinois)
Premise: Outspoken and awkward, Lucy Hathaway (Deborah Sinclair’s BFF) is a failure at being a lady, but she’s far too passionate about women’s suffrage and dress reform to care (much) about society’s scorn. On the night of the Great Chicago Fire, her world is upended in two ways: her family loses most of their money, and she catches a baby who got thrown out of a burning hotel window. Years later, she’s a kick-ass activist and single mom running a proto-feminist bookstore. Then she learns that her daughter’s father, banker Randall Higgins, is still alive. Once a proud, thoroughly conventional family man, Rand has been a practical recluse since the fire that scarred his face, ended his marriage, and (he thought) killed his daughter. He’s overjoyed to have his daughter back, but now he and Lucy must figure out a way to raise the child that they both love so much.
Why I Like It: I was worried when I began this novel, because Rand starts out as a smug, boring sexist who thinks that a woman’s place is in the home. I would probably hate the book if Rand didn’t end up completely changing his worldview, agreeing with Lucy’s parenting methods, and risking the wrath of his bank colleagues by joining Lucy at a protest. As it is, Rand’s character development is incredibly satisfying, particularly because it’s emotionally realistic. (Instead of being swayed entirely by romantic love or overwhelmed by Lucy’s vast superiority, he learns to see things from her perspective and recognizes that her actions make the world a better place.) Lucy, for her part, is probably one of my top ten heroines. She’s an active, thoroughly engaged progressive who listens to people more marginalized than her without making a big show of it; she’s a thoughtful mom who genuinely likes her weird kid; and she’s got massive insecurities and a stubborn streak that keep her from being too perfect.
Favorite Scene: Rand sees Lucy’s ideals reflected in their daughter’s response to his kind-of-messed-up face.
Further Note: Is Victorianish my favorite type of historical romance? I think it is!

Birthday Prompt - The Perfect Present
Today is a very special day, Taylor Swift turns 30!! To celebrate I decided to take some tumblr prompts and write some gay short stories with a birthday theme!
Happy birthday, Taylor (hope you never read these!)
Prompt: Taylor mentions offhand during the first week or so after VSFS 2013 how much she loves her birthday and the Christmas season, Karlie is immediately hit with pressure and tries her very best to find the perfect gift for someone who can already buy herself whatever she wants. Taylor is impressed!
A/N: I got three different versions of this same prompt so I just mashed them together into this, hope everyone enjoys!
Read it on ao3 or on Wattpad
The snow is falling outside the window and on the couch in her cozy West village apartment we find Karlie Kloss, but she's not alone. International super star Taylor Swift is lying on said couch, her feet casually resting on Karlie's lap in a way that feels oddly familiar already.
Karlie can't quite believe that this is her life now, a mere week ago the older woman was someone Karlie was constantly told by everyone from makeup artists to supposed mutual friends that she'd get along with; and she had to admit that they all had been right. In the week or so since Taylor's appearance at the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show the two had been almost inseparable and Karlie wouldn't have it any other way.
"Hey," Taylor suddenly says and despite her soft tone she almost manages to make Karlie jump. They have been sitting in comfortable silence for a while and from what Karlie has been able to tell Taylor has been completely engrossed in whatever is on her phone.
"Yes?" Karlie asks, almost teasingly, curious about what Taylor might be about to say, but also aware that the last time she spoke it was to announce that she needed to go pee.
"I just read that Downton Abbey season...I mean series four is premiering on Us TV on January 14th, that the best late birthday present ever!"
Karlie stifles an urge to laugh, "Downton Abbey, really? You're such a nerd!"
"Whatever, Miss DC Comics!" Taylor fires back with no hesitation and Karlie actually laughs now, "Whatever," She copies, "you read Marvel!"
"The far superior publishing house!"
"I'm not actually entering this discussion with you, Swift!"
"Too chicken, Kloss?"
Karlie laughs again and shakes her head, "Not doing it...You said birthday present? It's your birthday soon, December 13th, right?"
"That's creepy, Karlie." Taylor says and her expression is so deadpan that for half a second Karlie considers apologizing until Taylor bursts out laughing, "Someone did their homework on me!"
Blushing a tiny bit now the model smiles, "what can I say, the material is readily available and I'm a curious person!"
"That's sweet," Taylor says and retracts her legs only to properly sit up to press a small kiss to Karlie's still heating cheek.
"Oh look!" Taylor exclaims suddenly, as Karlie has learnt over the past week the blonde's attention span is occasionally akin to that of a Golden Retriever puppy, "it's snowing!" She jumps up and rushes to the window, practically pressing her nose to the glass. She turns back to the woman on the couch, her white, broad smile splitting her face in two, "I can't wait for Christmas!"
Karlie's only thought?
What the actual fresh hell am I supposed to get her for her birthday AND Christmas?
--
It's about two days later when Karlie has practically rushed around every store in Manhattan, still none the wiser as to what to get her new...friend. When her phone rings she's relived, an excuse to take a break from the stress that she usually only feels around four days before Christmas Day.
"Hey Kimby!" She breathes into the phone a lot more breathlessly than she'd planned. Turns out running around stores, not her thing. She already knew that, but turns out it's really not her thing when there's the added pressure of trying to impress someone with the perfect gift.
"What the heck, Mouse, you running a marathon or something?"
Karlie giggles despite herself, "not this time," she admits, "I'm trying to find someone a birthday and/or Christmas present and I have absolutely no-"
"It's Taylor Swift, isn't it?" The model's little sister interrupts and Karlie rolls her eyes.
"It's for Taylor, yes...I wish you guys would stop calling her-"
"It's her name!" The high schooler counters.
"Yes, Kimberly!"
"That's not the same..." The girl grumbles, making her sister laugh a little too hard.
"Do you like, realize how cool it is that you're dating Taylor Sw-"
"We're not dating," Karlie interrupts a little too quickly, "We're just...hanging out and I don't-"
"Karlie and Taylor sittin' in a tree, K-I-S-S-I-" Kimby singsongs, laughing hysterically all the while.
"Okay, dude, unless there's something you actually wanted I'm going to hang up now, you're incredibly unhelpful and I have to find something!"
--
It's two days until Taylor's birthday and once again the two are sat on Karlie's couch when the model finds herself taking a deep breath.
"So Taylor," she starts and the singer grins.
"Yes, Karlie?"
"I know I'm not going to be able to see you on your birthday, but I-I got you a little something and-and it's really no big deal if you hate it you can totally...I mean I don't want to-"
"Karlie," Taylor interrupts and there's something soft and fond and somehow incredibly calming in her gaze suddenly, "just go get the thing if you want, I already love it because it's from you and I...Well..." There's a few seconds of agonizing silence, "I really, really like spending time with you!"
Karlie beams as she gets up from the couch and walks over to the TV stand to reveal a package wrapped up in ribbon and soft sparkly paper, just the sight makes Taylor smile she notes and she's very proud of herself for a second.
"Is it fragile?" Taylor asks immediately as Karlie hands her the gift and the taller girl shakes her head, "not really." Taylor proceeds to shake the present at once and even puts her ear up to it. "It's heavier than I thought!" She notes and Karlie smiles in amusement, "just open it!"
"This is a process, Karlie!" Taylor exclaims, raising her eyebrows in horror at the callousness with which the younger girl is seemingly treating this moment. Truth is though that Karlie is too nervous to watch Taylor go about this any longer, but she's not about to tell her that.
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to interrupt the delicate process-" She starts, but Taylor is already ripping the wrapping off like a kid on Christmas morning by that point.
A few seconds of silence pass between them as Taylor gets the gift unwrapped and then she gaps and it is as if the world stands still until she speaks.
"Karlie, I like, I genuinely want you to know that this is the best gift I've gotten in...Years!" At first Karlie thinks she's kidding, that this is some expression of dry humor again, but then she actually looks at Taylor who's borderline tearing up and looking at the necklace with the widest of smiles.
Delicately she lifts it from its box and hands it to Karlie, "Will you help put it on?"
"Of course!" Karlie says and gently moves Taylor's long hair out of the way to fasten the necklace properly. When Taylor turns around still beaming Karlie can't help but kiss her, Taylor might be thankful for the present, but Karlie is just as thankful that it appears she may have nailed this.
The necklace is a perfect replica of a small cat complete with fur details, it's real silver and it's cute but silly, or at least Karlie had thought so until she saw Taylor's face.
"How did you know I've been looking at this online for a while?"
"I don't know, lucky guess?"

Christmas 1994 (X-files fan fic)
Happy Holidays to @CatherineGlins2 on Twitter
Set in season 2.
Friday December 23, 1994.
A “quick” after work drink on a Friday afternoon before the Christmas holiday is not only appropriate, but a socially normative approach to celebrate the special, and yet professional, bond between two law enforcement partners. So is sneaking away from the office an hour early. Scully drinks a white wine and Mulder a beer. Twenty minutes-quick, easy, done- until Mulder asks why Scully is so distracted.
“Tis the season, Mulder. I still have shopping to do for my sister and my mom and then a bunch of wrapping tonight. I told my mother I would come over early tomorrow.”
Mulder frowns. Scully seems tired. He is still protective of her since her return from death’s door. He suggests he could come with her. Walk the mall to do his own Christmas shopping and then help Scully carry her bags upstairs. Scully wonders how Mulder survives in the world with such poor boundaries. She simply is not in the seasonal mood; yet alone in the mood to deal with Mulder in a mall, but doesn’t have the strength to protest over his insistence. So Scully shops and Mulder lurks and only when she explains she is going into Victoria Secret to shop for her sister does Mulder walk away for his own shopping. At least he says so but has no packages or bags when they come together 30 minutes later.
She is happy though as he takes her bags, grabs her hand and walks through the crowds. His size and commanding air moves them through the mall crowds better than she could navigate on her own. When he takes the keys to her car, drives her home, and carry the bags upstairs, she is relieved. She doesn’t want to admit how tired she is.
“Scully? No tree?”
“I’m going to my mom’s so decided not to bother.” Scully’ small smile is forced. Mulder nods, pus his hand out and cradles her cheek just briefly. “Merry Christmas.”
With Mulder gone, Scully pulls out her plastic bins with her organized ribbons, name tags, scizzors, boxes and gift bags. She sits at her kitchen table and begins to wrap; although she would much rather just go to bed.
Sat. Dec. 24, 1994
Noon time and the Scully women -Dana, her sister Melissa and their mother, Maggie- are making cookies. The smell of coffee, cinnamon and chocolate fills the kitchen. The house is decorated fully for the season. Outside snow is lightly falling. When Maggie leaves the room, Melissa opens up the fridge sneakily and pulls out a can of whip cream. She puts some on top of her coffee and then some in Scully’s cup and then quickly sneaks the can back in the fridge when she hears Maggie walking back into the kitchen. The doorbell saves her from being busted as Maggie goes to answer.
“When we run out of whip cream for the pumpkin pie tonight, mom will be giving us the evil eye.” Scully says but smiles as she drinks the now sweet and milky coffee.
“It feels more Christmas with whip cream in our cups, like when we were young drinking hot chocolate on Christmas Eve night.”
The joy of this day is not forced. It is real happiness these sisters feel having this time together but there is another feeling, a sadness tapping the merry down a little.
“Girls, come look.”
Maggie carries into the dining room the delivery from the doorbell. In her hand is a beautiful centerpiece of white Christmas Lillies. She puts it in the centerpiece of the table.
“Who sent it?” Melissa asks. When Maggie shrugs, Melissa takes the card addressed to Mrs. Scully and hands it to her mother to read.
“Fox” Maggie said. “What a thoughtful thing to do.” Tears glistening in her eyes, Maggie hands Dana the card and touches her shoulder with a light touch before going back into the kitchen. Dana reads the card out loud so Melissa can hear.
“In this joyous time, I know there is a loved one missing. May the love of the children you had together comfort you as you grieve your husband. My best, Fox Mulder”
Melissa and Dana locks eyes. “ Don’t start, Melissa”. “ Dana, he remembered that dad died a year ago at Christmas.”
Maggie brings into the room two red candles in silver holders and places them on either side of the centerpiece. “When Dana was missing, Fox and I talked a lot about how much I missed your father. This really is so thoughtful.”
Monday December 26, 1994
Nearly five pm and it feels even later. Scully bets she made 11 trips from the car, up the stairs to her apartment, with her over night bag, Christmas gifts and left-overs. She stands with the refrigerator open wondering where to put all the leftovers when she hears a knock on the door.
Really, the man has no boundaries, she thinks. The point of vacation is that you dont see your coworkers and it is only the first actual day of vacation. She opens the door. “Mulder?”
He is smiling broadly. “I brought you a gift, Scully.”
“Mulder, we said no gifts”. She turns around exasperated and walks into her living room. She hears Mulder enter and the sound of the door closing. She hears him says, “ This is different, Scully.” Without turning around, she says , “you already sent that centerpiece.” “That was for your mother, though.” “She was really touched.” “She called yesterday to thank me.” Scully sighs. What kind of boundaries could she impose if her mother and her partner have become friends? She turns now to face him.
Mulder, small table top tree in hand, looks around the living room and then places the tree on her coffee table. He gestures to the tree with his hand. Smilingly foolishly he says, “There, now you have a tree.”
“Mulder, thanks but...Christmas is over.” Under her breath she adds “ and good riddance”.
“But,”. Mulder ups a finger “ This is a New Years tree.” He waits for a beat, but when Scully just stares he goes back to explaining. “There are no Christmas related ornaments. I mean snow flakes and skaters but look, champagne bottles, and this one just says happy new year and then here’s a little disco ball like the time square ball. “
Scully smiles only slightly. Mulder becomes more uncomfortable. “I’m not suggesting we spend New Years together” Mulder says although it was exactly his plan to ask when he got the tree, “ I know it would be inappropriate. I have some boundaries, but I just”. Mulder throws up his hands resigned to being embarrassed. “Thought you should have a tree.”
Scully says “Mulder, my father always made us take down the tree the day after Christmas.” She bursts into tears.
Mulder embraces her. Scully sobs into chest. He pats her back awkwardly while berating himself mentally. Stupid, stupid, insensitive!
Scully pulls away from Mulder. She grabs a tissue out of a nearby box and blows her nose. Mulder looks dejectedly from her, to the tree, to his shoes. Then he hears Scully start to laugh.
“ Are those noisemakers stuffed in the tree? And Mardi gras beads?”
“I’m sorry, Scully.”
“Mulder I love this tree.”
Mulder lifts his eyes from his shoes to her face. What?
Scully speaks in a soft voice. “My family spent the day after Christmas arguing, I mean screaming at each other, over a tree and whether we should take it down, as Dad would have, or leave it up because he’s”. Scully’s voice breaks “not here any longer and so we could. I mean Melissa and Bill screaming and my mother in tears. Then, we spent the morning taking down the tree. I haven’t been in the mood this year at all, tired and depressed, I guess, but taking down that Christmas tree and realizing the season was over was the saddest thing I have ever done.”
Scully sits down. Mulder stares at her for a bit and kneels down beside her saying softly. “ I know it must be hard without your Father but, for me this season, I’m just so glad you’re here. I just wanted to celebrate a little because New Years is about the future and I am just glad you are here.”
“ I don’t want every Christmas to be sad because we lost my father this time of year. Instead I just want the season to be....” Scully can’t find the words.
“About the miracle of life and the hope inherent in a New Year and new beginnings?”
Scully smiles at Mulder. He is such a believer in so many different things, but she says only. “You know I have a bunch of left overs. Are you hungry?”
Mulder smiles and nods “I can eat.”
“Find something on television and I will get us plates.”
Scully realizes that for the first time this Holiday season, her mood is light. She glances at the tree before going into the kitchen. She is humming a tune. “ What are you doing New Years Eve.”

Advantages Of Hiring A Travel Agency
Yes, the memberships do allow anyone to purchase holiday packages at a reduced price, that is not how the emphasis has always been. Most of the emphasis is on selling of memberships, not the travel deals. In the 1980s, the Victoria Place shopping center was a welcome addition, offering travelers more than twenty boutiques and restaurants, including a sushi bar and a Krispy Kreme Doughnuts. Victoria Station shops include Boots, Tie Rack, W.H. Smith, and other popular inside. Train travel from Rome Termini to Gioia Tauro involved in having your dog professionally trained can range from a few hundred dollars to 1 or 2 thousand. You just need to shop around and find the best price that fits your financial. Training your pet yourself is of course much cheaper monetarily you will just must invest a lot of time and patience. Standard tools you'll need to train your friend yourself are: a nice sturdy collar and/or harness, a retractable leash and plenty of Fido's favorite treats. When planning your model train scenery remember believe carefully of the geographical area you are setting it in. It is usually green and lush with a high annual rainfall, or is it perhaps and arid dry area where vegetation is sparse or perhaps wind lightly fluffed. Also, think in connection with time of this year and whether its winter, summer, spring or fall (autumn). It would be unusual having a summer coastal beach scene on one side among the layout and a winter snow scene on the other. Flawed saying that, it is the layout and if that's that want, then do of which. After dinner the porter turned along the four bunks for the evening. That still leaves two nice reclining chairs for the adults by sitting up and the kids can sack out whenever now is the time. Night travel on a train although gentle rocking of merely makes numerous individuals sleep becoming baby. There are lights kind of reading or you can sit n the dark view the world go on your window. There are two-ways to travel by train in Morocco, a first-class and a second-class. Six people are accommodated within a first-class compartment, while eight people can fit from a second-class automobile. First class bookings enable you to a actual reservation, which is cool have a seat near to the window to relish the observe. If not, it is first-come, first-serve. Refreshment carts are usually available and offer drinks and snacks to passengers at different prices. Train travel in Spain also takes very little time, particularly at the Madrid-Barcelona AVE and Madrid- Seville Correct route. Inter rail passes and Eurail also makes travel cheaper on holiday. There are huge numbers of discounts that can be by these trains and the facilities they have are also excellent but while you are able to take it you must be very wise. Train travel from Melito Di Porto Salvo to Bari Centrale can do, which i often did, is get a a train as an accommodation room. That is, consider an overnight train. Individuals a good way to spend less on accommodations, but will have tiring after a while. What when you are going always be multiple days in area? Are you on the subject of a different pair of trainers every daytime? That's the question you've got to ask yourself. If you're in order to wear a further pair of trainers every day, you now take over a component of luggage that primarily contains shoes. Do you travel having a second shoe bag? You've now just doubled your luggage. That may be more vital that have the actual pair of trainers you want, or are you looking forward to attempt to travel along with a single travel bag? You could choose being convenient and practical, a person could choose flexibility of experiencing a whole bunch of shoes in an outside shoe bottle. At that point, And maybe you're a measure away from hatboxes, steamer trunks together with entourage that travels along with you. In fact, the traffic surveillance police were after me! Upon arriving home, I were letter from Brighton and Hove council fining me for entering one for their bus counters! They kindly sent me an image to prove this. Second, constantly that Train travel from Rome Termini to Airport Rome Fiumicino are never tied down or dedicated in just ONE property. Unlike owning a timeshare, an individual pay A lot of cash to be permitted keep at one location, a travel club membership an individual to visit to ANY of this properties that the travel membership company if affiliated which has. Depending on the travel membership you choose this could be in the hundreds, to tens of thousands of properties from all of around the earth.

When Ghosts Come For Us
Chapter 57
NOTE This is based on the movie Crimson Peak, so if any of the subject matter in that was uncomfortable for you, you will find this similar. I will *NOT* be describing incest in this, it will only be implied, same as the movie.
As I have stated already, my laptop is broken at present so please excuse grammar mistakes and the lack of GIFs and pics.
Also, I do not own any image or gif used in this story.
HERE is the link to Chapter 1 on Ao3
Rating - Mature
Charlotte looked at the paperwork in front of her, it would not be easy or even nice, especially because of the life William Hamilton had afforded her but she would rot in the ground before giving Mr Hall Foxgrove Park and Manor. It was William’s greatest fear.
She had been startled by the emergence of why Lydia had come to her. She could not blame the woman though. The fear of being homeless, William had clearly meant to take care of her, what she could not gather was why he had not purchased the house for her, or indeed, given her a house on the land of the Manor and Park where the rent would be dismissed and she would have been close. Charlotte decided to look into that. It still left the issue of the little girl and her needs. She could not leave a little girl without, that led to desperate women doing desperate things to get by, she could not be the reason some child was sold for work or worse. She would look after the beautiful and innocent Victoria, as a mother, she knew she had to, it was only right.
Thomas had not been as understanding. He was angered at the gumption of the woman to think it right to lie to them, not only to get money for the child but to get in on what was fairly Charlotte’s money and inheritance. More than once, his wife had to calm him on the way back to Foxgrove, reminding him that he had once been only interested in her wealth also, Mr Hall, in fact, had been doing so for longer and with no form of deceit as to what he was after, though he lacked the demeanour or appearance to assist his attempts. Thomas remained quiet for a few moments at her statement. When he did speak again, the faint mumbles of the word “Lucille” were all that Charlotte could make out.
With a sigh and a weary rubbing of her eyes, Charlotte rose from the desk, now a commonplace for her since she began to contemplate what to do with regards the situation, and walked back through the house.
On her way back to her rooms, she heard footsteps behind her, smiling slightly and turned to face her husband. “A design has snared your interest, I assume?”
“You know me so well.” Thomas placed her hand in the nook of his arm and walked beside her. “Dare I ask, my beautiful Lottie, what ails your mind this hour of the night?”
“I am just trying to assess how we shall move forward with Mr Hall.”
Thomas’ mix of a smile at seeing his wife and slight concern as to her being awake at past midnight fell immediately and were replaced by a hint of anger. “And has anything come to you?” “Not yet, but it will. It always does.”
Thomas took his wife’s hand and placed it to his lips. “You are the most incredible woman, my darling wife, I know that you will think of something.”
Leaning in against him, Charlotte smiled slightly, knowing her husband truly entrusted in her to do so. “So much faith in me, my love.”
“You are the most intelligent, wily and able woman I have ever had the good fortune to meet, and I get to call you my wife. Lottie, I know you will deliver on whatever manner you decide to deal with this...man, and his plans.” He kissed her hand again. “Now, we have long passed an acceptable time to make for our bed, let us dally no longer and get some rest, goodness knows what tomorrow will bring.”
“When you say it like that, you make it sound as though something ominous will occur,” Charlotte commented.
“I dare say it could.” Charlotte looked at her husband worriedly. “The rain falls still and I think Blake seems adamant to run around in it once more, I do not think Mrs Matthews will be a happy woman should he do so and I would worry for his favourite tripe not making its way into his dinner should he make good on his plans for that patch of mud that Mr Matthews is planning to put some new plants in.” “Oh dear, his poor Dahlias. Blake would not be the least bit popular should he do so.” Charlotte winced.
“Perhaps, it is best then that we keep him under our watchful eyes tomorrow, lest he enrages Mr Matthews?” “I think you right, dear husband,” Charlotte agreed, heading to their room to get some rest.
*
Charlotte rushed through the halls of Foxgrove almost like she has gone mad. The large smile which she was sporting as she did so would have given great credence to such thought. She knew where to find her husband but the idea of taking time to get to him was preposterous in her opinion. As soon as she got to go drawing room which Thomas had been using as a workshop, she knocked on the door with rapid harsh raps before entering.
Thomas looked at her with startled confusion. “Lottie, is everything alright, Darling?”
“Edward and Joanne are in Cornwall for the honeymoon, they intend to leave later this week and have asked if it would be alright for us to meet them before they head back North.”
Seeing the elated smile on his wife that clearly showed how much she wished to see her brother, Thomas thought for a moment. “I do not think it wise for us to go very far from Foxgrove at present. We have no idea what Mr Hall has planned and I think it's best if we are here whilst we wait for him to play his hand.” Charlotte's smile fell, though she nodded, clearly agreeing with her husband's thoughts on the dreaded Mr Hall. “That is not to say that Edward and Joanne could not come here for a day or two so you can spend time with them and be ready for in case anything may occur.”
Once more, Charlotte’s eyes lit up before she stepped forward and kissed her husband passionately on the lips. “I could not have asked for a better husband.” “If you think that you are the one of which could never have done better, I fear to be the one to correct you but none could have done better than I at pertaining such a wonderful wife.” He smiled in return. “Go, write your brother and tell him that we look forward to his visit and should he find it in him to get you some Cornish butter fudge, it would be most welcome.” “Is there butter fudge in Cornwall?” Charlotte asked curiously.
“The finest in all of England.”
“I had better ask him for plenty so.” With that, Charlotte rushed from the room once more, hoping to have a response written before Mr Matthews headed to town with all of the paperwork she and Mrs Matthews had sorted for Foxgrove that he was going to bring there for them that day, as well as a parcel with a name the butler had seen many times before through the years that William Hamilton had lived at Foxgrove, so he took little notice of. The only notice he did take was that for once, it was not William’s writing that donned the outside of the package, but Charlotte's.
Thomas merely chuckled slightly to himself, happy at his wife’s excitement to see her brother and her now sister-in-law in the near future. With her attention on such, he went back to what he was doing, studying the small metal rod in his hand carefully before looking back to the drawing with the measurements he was studying once more, his determination intensifying by the moment.
*
In the small cottage, not too far from Foxgrove, Lydia Carmichael frowned at the package which she had just received, she did not recognise the writing nor could she think of anybody that would send her such a thing. Upon her opening it, she realised immediately who had sent it to her. Inside, was a beautiful dress that could only be for Victoria, a few little treats including butterscotch and other small presents for a child. Then, amongst everything, a letter addressed to Lydia. The words were not too difficult or taxing, the writing not as elegant and cursive as others would use, all highly legible. There was not too much said, merely a few lines. The rent in the house was paid for the next few months, so not to worry about that and that there would be fresh meat and vegetables delivered twice weekly for Lydia and her little girl and should she require anything else whilst Charlotte was dealing with Mr Hall, to merely send a small letter to Foxgrove and it would be dealt with swiftly. What startled Lydia the most was the beautiful shawl which was tucked at the bottom of the parcel. It was new and clearly not a cheap one. She unfolded it and her brow furrowed as she heard the sound of coins clinking within a purse, sure enough, there on the ground underneath the unfolded shawl was a small purse, when she lifted it, she realised it was full and heavy. Opening it, she looked at the coins within, tears welling in her eyes. Lydia looked after letter again, she looked at the final line and nodded to herself in silent agreement.
“I will deal with Mr Hall, all you need do is let me know of anything he asks of you should he contact you again. Agree to whatever he asks, then let me know. I will look after you and Victoria, I swear it. Charlotte”

Wildfire Records - Chapter Eighteen
Word count: 3441
Playlist:
Knee Socks - Arctic Monkeys
Graveyard Whistling - Nothing But Thieves
Warning: graphic sexual content Andy straightened his shirt out as he waited in the coffee shop down the road from the apartment, Cindy having chosen it so he had to do as little as possible to meet her. Everything in him was screaming that this was a terrible idea, but he figured there was no harm in trying and there was no one to stop him from going anyway.
Cindy had refused the band once before, and part of him wanted to ensure the woman saw them for what they were now - a success without her help. That and he couldn’t help but be curious as to what she would offer.
He stood as the blonde walked into the cafe, knowing what she looked like half from the fact she said she had a straight blonde bob and half from the description that Juliet and Victoria had offered when they had been bitching about her. He could already see what Juliet meant about her being a force to be reckoned with, her stern face looked strict even when she smiled and he sat down after shaking her hand.
“I got you a latte,” he started, “I didn’t know what your normal order was.”
“Oh God, it should be me buying you the coffee!” Cindy spoke, pulling the mug toward her but not touching it. Andy sipped his cappuccino, licking his lips and eyeing her with curiosity, “I just wanted to have a quick chat with you really, how are you doing?”
Her energy was strange, unlike anything andy had experienced before and that was saying something. He had deliberately come to this meeting sober and he was glad for it because if he had even an ounce of coke in his system he would have laughed in her face.
“I’m alright thank you…” he sipped his coffee once more, sitting back on his chair and resting an ankle on the opposite knee, “listen I’ll cut the crap here. I know that you manage Juliet and that her and Victoria came to you with our EP a few months ago and you turned us down. Why are you approaching me now, and why did you call me and not ask Juliet to call us all in?”
Cindys face fell, and Andy was careful not to smile. She had either expected him not to know or not to care about the cross over. He enjoyed defying people’s expectations.
The blonde covered her expression with a fake smile, chuckling and sipping her latte as she carefully crafted the words in her head.
“Listen, we both know who’s in charge of the whole operation. Juliet and Victoria may have started this little experiment and put money into social media and whatever, but you’re the reason they even have something to be doing in the first place.”
Andy nodded, smug at her words and acutely aware that she was working him.
“So it would have been stupid to come to anyone but you with this proposal.” Cindy continued, pulling a paper folder from her bag and sliding it across the table. “In there is a contract for a 2 album record deal, a management package and a U.K. tour with possibility of extension to the US if the U.K. tour hits certain targets.”
Andy tried not to look as excited as he was, instead busying himself by opening the folder and letting his eyes run over the contract. It was all there in black and white, a contract worth almost a million dollars which allowed them everything they had worked so hard for. The U.K. tour only had to hit capacity on three of its dates for them to tour the US, and the venues for the US were already listed. This was everything they had wished for and more, and although he so badly wanted to continue with the company that they had started, it seemed stupid to pass this opportunity up.
“So?” Cindy spoke, and Andy looked up at her with a grin, no longer able to contain just how excited he was,
“Absolutely.” He spoke, making the decision without even thinking further of the others. This was something that he knew was going to be good for all of them, something that would make them all a shit ton of money and see them rocket to fame in the process. Sure Wildfire had been fun and had gotten them where they needed to be for this offer, but how could he say no to this? The girls would be pissed, and he hated the idea of making Victoria’s face look the way it did when she caught him with Lizzie, but at the end of the day they could still live with them, could still experience everything. They could even come on tour with them if they wanted. The money they would make off of merch sales alone would be enough to ensure that they could be along for the ride.
The blonde smirked, sipping her coffee once more as she slid a pen over the table, “we would obviously need the three of you to sign, so once you have, take this to the others and give me a call when you’re ready to hand it over.”
Andy nodded, his stomach falling when he realised that Josh and Danny may not be as comfortable with this as he was. They had always been the ones with the better moral compass.
“Oh and one more thing?” Cindy spoke, leaning forward with a glint in her eye that she hoped Andy didn’t notice, “this contract says that you’ll need to cut all ties to Wildfire Records. That means stripping them from your website, Spotify, gig listings…”
“Yeah, yeah..” andy shrugged, already knowing that this would have been the case
“And you’ll have to cut ties with any employees there,” Andys eyes darted up to the blonde, heart wrenching in a way he had never felt before as he realised what she meant. Juliet worked for Fieldworks so that wouldn’t be an issue. This clause had been added specifically so that Victoria couldn’t be involved and Andy would be willing to bet it was because she had quit.
“You mean..” he spoke, trying not to think about the way she would look at him when he told her that she had to move out, that she couldn’t speak to them again. He would have to forget any chance he had at being back in her bed, would have to tell Josh to stop whatever they had started. Would it be worth it considering this contract gave them everything they had ever wanted? The very thing they were in England for?
“No contact. We can’t have you sharing industry secrets with our competitors now can we..” she smiled like the snake she was, and Andy gulped as he weighed up everything. Surely the girls would understand?
—
After a perfect morning of waking up in his arms, his soft kisses on her shoulder rousing her from slumber, she reluctantly pulled on clothing and stretched out. She had never woken feeling so satisfied, and she felt her heart skip as he glanced up at her from where he was sitting. Everything had shifted last night and you could feel it in the air. They were no longer just friends, there was no longer sexual tension between them because they had already felt each other. She bit her lip as she suppressed the urge to crawl on top of him and kiss him hard, to strip once more and spend the day as they had spent the evening.
“You ready for this, baby?” He spoke, his gorgeous accent slipping over the words, the pet name making her heart skip once more as she realised that she was his. They hadn’t made anything official, hadn’t even spoken about anything as they had been too busy bringing each other to the edge, but she was. She felt like she always had been.
“I’m not sure..” Victoria chuckled, and he moved closer to her, taking her face in one hand and pressing a soft kiss on her lips. She bit her lip as he pulled away and his lips quirked into a small smirk.
“Don’t be using my weakness for you biting your lip against me now alright?” He grinned, holding her chin up with his forefinger as he kissed her softly again.
“Mmno promises..” she giggled, and she kissed him once more before they crawled from the tent.
Juliet and Danny were already up and making breakfast, and Victoria felt herself blush as she watched Danny’s smirk at his best friend.
“Sleep well?” Juliet spoke first, and Josh met Victoria’s eyes with a small smile before she answered.
“Oh yeah, the fresh air always helps me sleep better..” she sat on the bench next to the fire as Josh grabbed their toothbrushes and some water
“Hmm…” Danny spoke with a smirk on his face, “fresh air huh?”
Josh didn’t meet his friends eyes, instead choosing to look up at Victoria who was doing the same thing. He passed her her toothbrush and the toothpaste and Juliet and Danny smirked to each other, choosing to let it go for now as they obviously didn’t want to talk about it. The moans coming from the tent the previous evening spoke for themselves, and if they didn’t, the hickey on Josh’s neck sure did.
The drive back to London was just as smooth as the drive out. On more than one occasion, Josh’s hand slipped to Victoria’s thigh, her denim shorts allowing him to touch warm skin. It was more a comfort thing than anything else, but it was winding the redhead up more than she could let on. They hadn’t voiced that they weren’t going to tell anyone what had happened, but they both had the same feeling. They wanted to ensure that everything was settled before they let anyone know they had slept together. Victoria hoped that this wasn’t a one time thing, that it wasn’t just because they had been in a tent together in the middle of nowhere. As if to answer her, he slipped his fingers between her own when they were at a red light and bought her hand to his lips, kissing it softly with a smile and a sweet look in his eyes that made her heart race.
She hadn’t felt this way in a long time, hadn’t been with a guy who understood her and made her so happy before and she swallowed hard at the realisation. She had already been falling for him before they were together, and she hoped more than anything that he felt the same way.
They had a harder time hiding the fact that they had slept together when they got back to the house. She felt like her fingers were itching every moment they weren’t touching him, and there was only so many times he could sneak a kiss without anyone noticing.
*After a night of charged looks and touches across the dinner table, of almost kisses as he tried to teach her to French inhale more, she wasn’t surprised to find him sneaking into her room. She was glad for not being too high when he climbed on top of her, her legs instantly parting for him as his lips met her neck.
Soft giggles at his touch turned to moans, “Josh..” she grinned, soft kisses on her lips warping as his tongue dipped in her mouth and ran along her bottom lip.
“You’re like a drug,” he whispered, lips moving back to her neck, the smell of his aftershave mixed with tobacco and marijuana washing over her as she moaned softly. “I never wanna stop making you feel good..”
He smirked against her lips as she moaned, a hand moving to silk pyjamas and slipping inside to feel her bare beneath them.
“No panties?” He looked down at her, eyes burning with lust, “god could you get any hotter?” She grinned as he kissed down her body, pulling the fabric from her and licking his lips as he settled on his elbows between her legs. Nerves ran through her as she realised that they hadn’t done this yet. They barely cared for foreplay when they were camping, so desperate to unravel each other.
“J—“ she bit down on her lip as he gazed up at her with lust filled eyes, and she was sure she had never seen him so turned on, “god you look so sexy..” she bit down on her lip and he smirked once more.
“Wanna know a secret, baby?” He whispered as he kissed slowly down her thigh, nipping every now and then and blowing softly on her pussy before he did the same with the other thigh. “Mhm…” She nodded, biting her lip harder as he spoke, “I absolutely love giving head..”
He placed a soft, open mouth kiss on her clit, eyes never leaving her as she gasped at the contact, “and I’ve been wanting to taste you for so long..” his voice was an octave deeper, and she was about to respond when her voice caught in her throat.
His flat tongue gave a solid lick from entrance to her clit, a small flick of his tongue at the end against the most sensitive part feeling like a master signing off his work with a flourish. She let out a loud moan at the feeling, his smirk against her so sexy that she completely lost it. Hands flew to his hair, gripping softly as he worked her clit in perfect circles, two fingers easily slipping inside of her.
“God you taste so good…” he moaned, kissing her clit once more, “and you look so good moaning my name…” he groaned against her as she pressed her hips up toward his lips, smirking before he went back to work.
He alternated between licks and sucks, fingers never relenting their wonderful assault on her g-spot. Her orgasm hit her hard and without warning, her back arching so far off the bed that the angle made his fingers press even harder against her spot.
“Fucking hell Josh..” she moaned out, cumming hard and he groaned against her pussy as he lapped up everything she had to give him. When her body had calmed to shaking softly on the bed, he moved his fingers from her to gently rub at her overstimulated clit.
“B-baby..” she moaned, legs jerking in pleasure as she felt herself begin to build to another orgasm. As if he knew, he continued to roll the small bundle of nerves in perfect circles, making his way up her body to kiss her softly. His smirk was one of the sexiest things she had ever seen, and she let out moan after moan as his tongue swiped across her nipples and up her neck.
“I’m gonna make you cum once for every time I’ve thought about you, twice for every time I touched myself over you and three times for every time I looked at you and wished you were mine,” his words, mixed with the way he was looking at her and how good his fingers felt on her clit tipped her over the edge again, and just when she thought she was coming down, he slipped his hard shaft inside of her.
“Holy s-shit J…” she spoke, tears leaking from her eyes as she was in so much pleasure she could barely stand it.
“God baby I..” he looked down into her eyes, wanting to tell her how much he liked her, how long he had wished he could hold her in his arms, but he couldn’t vocalise any of it without sounding desperate. “Fuck.. V you’re so perfect..”
He buried his head in her neck as he began moving inside of her, latching down onto her neck as she writhed in pleasure. She hitched her legs up on his hips, and he grabbed the headboard with one hand as he kissed her, moving back to allow his shaft to almost completely remove from her before slamming back in.
“J, oh my go-od..” she moaned, blinking tears of pleasure away as she looked up into his lust filled eyes. She had never seen his eyes so dark, his face so full of pleasure and his expression so territorial. He was so fucking sexy, so perfect and she couldn’t tell if it was the weed or the multiple orgasms but she never wanted anyone but him ever again.
“You’re so tight baby..” he groaned, “fucking so perfect..” he slammed hard into her faster, the wonderful wet noise of skin on skin filling the room, mixing with their moans and there was no way someone hadn't heard them.
Groaning as she looked up at him, she gasped for air as he slowed down, pushing deep and deliberately against her spot. He kissed her passionately, moans fighting moans as their tongues danced and he pulled away only to rub his nose against hers.
“I want you to cum on my cock, V” he whispered, “cum for me again, beautiful girl..” his fingers moved down to her clit and she cried out in pleasure, one twist of his finger over her drenched sex sending her out of control once more, and she gripped the headboard and his back as she came hard. Tears free flowed down her face as she came harder than she ever had done, nails digging into his back. He kissed her fiercely as he came inside of her, expletive after expletive whispered against her lips as his sloppily thrust to the tune of the end of their orgasms.
He lay above her for a moment, face buried in her neck as they tried to catch their breath. Victoria felt like everything around her was sensual, her body so hypersensitive from cumming so many times in quick succession, and she even moaned as he pulled out of her, the feeling of him moving inside of her even to pull out making her walls jolt.
“Fuck..” she whispered, staring at the ceiling completely star struck and not even caring the mess they had made, “Jesus Christ J..” she turned to face him, thighs slick with their sex but she could barely move.
“Mm..” he grinned, laying with his head on the pillow next to her looking completely satisfied, “I’ve been wanting to do you like that for a while…” he licked his lips as his eyes ran over her spent body. Maybe it was the post-sex haze, but he felt his heart skip a beat at the thought of waking up next to her everyday for the rest of his life.
“You’re amazing…” she whispered against his lips, kissing him softly over and over and pulling back only when her body denied her the luxury of holding their mess any longer.
He watched as she walked to the bathroom, pulling the duvet over his naked lower half and realised that he felt deeper for her than even he had realised. She was everything he had ever wanted and more.
—
*Andy sat on the roof terrace by himself after everyone had gone to sleep, drinking a beer and smoking a spliff as he read through the contract once more. He wanted to make sure that he fully understood everything that it said before he presented it to the boys. He knew there was a chance that they wouldn’t want to go for it, and he wanted to be ready to convince them in that case, ready to argue any angle.
He had been having second thoughts about it when he had come home, but then he had dinner and saw the way Josh and Victoria were looking at each other, saw them cuddling up on the couch the way that he and Victoria had once done, and had heard her moaning his name from across the apartment. He had thought for a moment that she was the best thing to ever happen to them, that she was the key to their success and his happiness, but she hadn’t understood why he had to sleep with Lizzie so she would never understand what it took to be successful in this business. There had been a moment before he fucked Lizzie where he had been hesitant, but him being selfish had gotten them the radio interview, and it was about to make them famous.
The sound of her voice moaning Josh’s name resonated in his mind, and he shivered slightly before he picked up the pen, signing her out of his life for good.

Broken Homes Fix Broken Hearts
Chapter 16
Thank you so much for reading and loving Derek and Juliet as much as @veroinnumera and I do. We still have a lot more to post and even more to still write! Please let us know what you think :D
-------
What if he meets some gorgeous police officer on a case? What if he gets bored of dating a librarian? What if he realizes he’s way out of your league?
The thoughts bounced around Juliet’s head with the force of a ten pound bowling ball. They were painful and heavy and becoming too much. There was no way she was getting any sleep tonight. Checking the time on her phone, she paused a second to stare at the background. It was a picture of Derek reading to the little ones, the day he’d come to help out. She’d taken under the guise of needing photos for the library’s website...but it had been so fucking adorable she had to hold onto it. Maybe...Before some terrible thought could follow, Juliet dialed his number. If she felt like shit she was allowed to share it with the man she loved. It was okay to be vulnerable. It was still terrifying though.
Thank god they’d wrapped everything up. It had been over a week and he was more than ready to go home. Derek had missed her. Everytime a text came in from a member of the team regarding the case, her picture would flash and remind him of home. He loved his job, but now that he had someone in his life that he loved just as much, it was hard being away all the time, especially on these long cases.
When the phone rang in his pocket, he hoped it was her, smiling when her name popped up. “Juliet? The case is closed. We’ll be coming home tomorrow. How are you? I’ve missed you.”
The sound of his voice put a smile on her face. “That’s great! And I’m fine. No. I’m not fine, that was a lie. Sorry. I’m still working on this open communication thing. And now I’m rambling...long story short my brain is treating me like crap, so I thought I should call you.”
Derek hated the fact that her brain did what it did to her, but he sighed happily knowing she’d called him before the thoughts had spiraled out of control - hopefully. “I’m glad you called,” he said softly, leaning back against the wall. “Your brain is an asshole and I can promise you that none of what it’s saying is true. I love you and I miss you.”
“So you haven’t met a very sexy police officer? Who for some reason my brain suggests looks like a Victoria Secret model and has a British accent, because that accent is insanely attractive?”
“Absolutely not,” Derek replied firmly but softly, putting on his best British accent as he continued. “I haven’t met any sexy police officers and even if I had, I wouldn’t pursue anything because I have a sexy librarian at home waiting for me.”
Juliet snickered on the other side of the line. Calling had been hard originally, but it was for the best. If she hadn’t called, she wouldn’t have been able to hear his absolutely horrible British accent. “Is that it? Your accent?”
“Accents aren’t my thing!” He replied mock defensively. “I’m a kid from Chicago!”
She laughed softly. “Alright. But it’s okay because you have other things, Derek Morgan.”
“And what are they?” Derek asked, half jokingly half extremely curious.
“I’m not telling you! You’re head is big enough already!” Juliet exclaimed through giggles.
“If you don’t tell me I’ll start speaking in a British accent again.” He warned teasingly.
“Okay! Okay! Fine! You win just please don’t speak in a British accent!” She pleaded.
Juliet tried to stop the blushing even though there was no one there to see it. Knowing Derek, he could hear her face flushing through the phone. “Well, as Penelope has said, you’re built like a Greek God. I have imagined many dirty things since you left. On top of that, you’re intelligent and strong and funny and kind, so basically I have the whole package.” Yea, and you-Shut up, brain!
She had to stop it in its tracks. “You going to sleep? How early are you getting up tomorrow to get back on the jet?”
Derek felt his head swell up a bit, but got himself back to earth quickly. “Seven AM. I’ll need a lot of coffee. Talk to you tomorrow on the way home?”
“Yes, and Derek? I love you.”
“I love you more.”
Somehow she didn’t think that was possible, but she wasn’t about to fight him on that either.
-------
“Actually, the cement industry is worth roughly $9.9 billion. Due to the inherently transportable nature it thrives in almost any geography, which is part of the reason there are cement mills in 34 of the 50 states. But, that’s actually pretty ironic because we still import about 10% of our cement!” Reid exclaimed, leaning back in his seat. “Morgan? Morgan are you listening to me?” He asked frowning slightly at the agent across from him who was just staring at his phone and smiling.
Derek’s head snapped up. “Sorry, Pretty Boy. I’m just excited to get home.”
“Juliet?” Reid asked, already knowing the answer. “What’s she saying that’s got you so happy? Or is it just going home?”
It could be. But it wasn’t. Juliet had decided to “come out of her shell” a bit and text him exactly what she wanted to be doing to him at the moment. Of course he was on the jet and couldn’t do anything about it. If she had done this last night? He definitely would’ve taken the situation into his own hands so to speak. “Not just going home. But I’m not giving away the details.”
Reid took a few seconds to get the gist of what Morgan was talking about, but then his eyes went wide. It was called sexting, wasn’t it? “Oh, OH! O-Okay forget I asked.”
Emily wandered over from grabbing coffee. “You’d better not screw this up Morgan, or I may just ask her out myself.”
“C’mon Prentiss! Don’t be like that.” Derek groaned.
“Like what? She’s hot and intelligent and I’m not blind.” Emily teased. “But seriously, you better not screw this up.”
JJ popped up from her seat and turned to him. “I second Emily. I mean, I have Will and I am happily taken, but she’s gorgeous and funny and smart, so don’t mess up.”
“How would I mess it up?”
Everyone within earshot (which was everyone but Hotch), turned to give him the side-eye. “Okay, so I have a bit of a reputation! This is different!”
Rossi snickered, remembering the looks well. Granted he had three ex-wives, but he remembered that lighter than air feeling of being in love. “We can see that. Any plans for when you get back?”
Derek shrugged. He hadn’t really thought about it; he was just excited to get back. “Well, she does,” Emily laughed.
“What?” Derek asked.
“JJ, Penelope and I are stealing her for a girls’ night.” He was about to put up a fight when Emily cut him off. “Deal with it!”
“Just don’t make a move on my girl.”

“Well, there’s gel nails and then there’s acrylic nails. You can do those however you want - crazy colors, French tips even. You would look great with French tips. Actually you would look great with any nails because look at you, and you could go short or long, and then-”
“Oh god, Penelope stop,” Juliet laughed. “Too many options. Also, can I call you babygirl too because I’m kind of jealous that Morgan has a babygirl and I don’t?”
Garcia curtsied, her smile wide. “Absolutely. I’m the residential babygirl. When was the last time you had your nails done?”
“Ummm...does me dipping my hand into a can of paint when I was five count?”
“What?! You’ve never had them done?”
Juliet shook her head feeling like a deer in the headlights. “N-no? I mean I guess I just never really got the point?”
Penelope clutched at her chest as if experiencing pains before pulling Juliet into her arms and patting her on the back. “Oh my sweet sweet child. It’s okay, babygirl is here now. You’re safe.”
Unable to help herself Juliet burst out laughing, voice muffled by Penelope’s sweater. Unfortunately it sounded like she was crying. “Oh my god Juliet, are you okay?” Garcia asked full of distress.
All Juliet could do was nod she was laughing too hard.
JJ and Emily shared a look as if to say young people these days despite the fact they were all roughly the same age. “Okay, okay c’mon. Let’s get this show on the road.” Emily pressed gesturing to take their seats.
After much deliberation and a little convincing on Penelope’s part, Juliet decided to go with slightly longer than normal for her nails in a light turquoise color she was really drawn to. “Mmm, this feels nice,” she said in a daze as the technician was finishing up with a hand massage. “I could get used to this.”
Emily was in the same position, practically falling asleep on the hand that had already dried. “I shouldn’t get used to this or I’ll sleep all the time.”
“And the problem with that?” Juliet asked.
The french manicure looked great on JJ, as it always did. Penelope of course went with the hottest of hot pinks with a little jewel on each thumb and Emily went with one of those striking reds you associate with a seductress who could just as easily kill you as kiss you. “What should we do now?”
Juliet looked toward Penelope, the resident queen of all things pampering. “Facials. We’ll practically fall asleep in the chairs.”
“Is that really a good idea?” JJ laughed.
But none of them seemed to care. They were relaxed, talked all the girl talk (including the BAU ladies wondering what Derek was like in bed) and nearly fell asleep as they’d all been afraid of doing, but it was a great day that Juliet hoped to be repeating more than once.
They parted ways and she called an Uber. The only option available was Uber Pool which Juliet wasn’t a huge fan of. Making small talk with strangers was among her worst nightmares. But it would be a short ride and she didn’t want to bother Derek to pick her up. The app said she was looking for a girl named Kerry with short blonde hair, green eyes, and a 2010 Toyota Camry.
A few moments later a car matching the description pulled up at the top of the block. The windows were blacked out. Weird...but people are entitled to their privacy. She shrugged it off and walked over opening the backseat door. The girl looking back at her through the driver’s mirror looked like the picture but she seemed...anxious. “Hi Kerry, I’m Juliet.” She smiled, extending a hand.
And that was when everything went to hell. The left side backseat door thudded shut as another figure entered the car, immediately stabbing a needle into her extended arm. As everything went hazy Juliet only had a split second to look up and see the one thing in the world that had ever truly terrified her.
Carter.
