Inovaire Chronicles: Smoke Rises Yet Again...
Disclaimer: I am tired as I edited this so blah. Also, I do plan on making this into a comic some time. This is a rough draft of the first story. Let me know how I could improve!
Ms. Desiree dons her press hat on her head, grabs her coat, and leaves the abandoned building that she converted into her own newspaper manufacturing area and ventures into the city to hopefully find her daily scoop. The best place to look for news is the Harbour, so she heads that direction. The city around her grows dirtier and slum-like as she nears the docks. Desiree lived in the Harbour section of the island city known as Inovaire. Inovaire has three sections of cities, separated by class. These sections are known as the Harbour, the dirtiest and most crime ridden section; the Factory, the most commercial and crowded section; and the Plaza, the ritziest section where the most exclusive and powerful families live. The Harbour was where Desiree felt most comfortable in, due to her upbringing. She lived in the Harbour section until the age of 20 when she had finally scraped up enough money to purchase a printing press and an unused building in the Factory. Though, that took years to build up as her mother and her had to work hard in order to even be able to afford a full meal. She hopes that offering well paying jobs only to people from the Harbour would help them be able to avoid most if not all the hardships that she had experienced. Desiree nears the ocean where the city opens up revealing docks that constantly bring in goods, food, and visitors. These docks that border the entire island are why this section of the city is called the Harbour. After a bit of walking on the docks, her train of thought is disrupted as she smells a mix of smoke, smoldering wood, and melted bronze. Her eyes land on smoke that slowly billows out from the now almost fully incinerated Yuress Warehouse before they land on several soot-covered people sitting on a nearby dock. The Yuress Warehouses are where most of the city's imports of building supplies come from. This is what caused the Yuress family to reach such a high status and become one of the select families who have the most power in Inovaire. She approaches the dock, preparing to interview the workers as she readies her trusty notebook and pencil. As she reaches the group of workers, she hears one of them, a bear, talking. The bear’s voice has a deep baritone dripping with a thick accent that accompanies his stocky frame and large belly.
“-tried tuh stop da fire, but it spread too fast tuh completely stop it. ‘S almost like dey knew where tuh throw dose fire bombs for it tuh get outta control.” The bear was telling the other workers. Desiree jots down in her notebook the word arson. She waits for the bear to finish his retelling and asks him if he would be okay with an interview. He nods at her and they both leave the group of other workers. “So, mister…” She starts, hinting for him to tell her his name. “Shirjay Ritley, but jus call me Shirjay.” He answers.
“So, Shirjay. You mentioned that someone threw fire bombs. Did you manage to see who threw it?” She asks. “Well, uhm… All dat I wuz able tuh see was a gas mask. It coulda been dat gang… uhhh. What were dey called again?” He asks. “The Firebrands.” Desiree quickly answers, writing down the name in her notebook and underlining it with one loud scratch of her pencil. “Thank you for your time Shirjay. I’ll make sure to have this in the paper as soon as I can. Try not tell anyone else about any more information. We don't want to spread any misinformation.” She tells Shirjay as she starts walking away. “Alright, miss…” The bear hesitates, “Wait! I nevah caught ya name!” He shouts. “Desiree!” She shouts back with a smile. “See ya ‘round, miss Desree!” He says with a wave as she disappears into the city. After a while of walking, she reaches the station and goes inside. She walks over to the desk of one of her workers, Veiryl Keeley, who had also been Desiree’s closest friend since childhood. Veiryl had a thin, yet sturdy physique and she could talk her way out of any situation. Desiree tore off the page about the fire from her notebook, making sure that she still had the page with the mention of the Firebrands in her possession. “V, start writing the paper for me please. Give it to Rayland and Pierre once you finish writing it, so they can print the papers. Tell them to hand all the papers to Barneby, once they have been printed. Barneby will know what to do.” She lists off to Veiryl. “A hello would be nice, D.” Veiryl said in her soft spoken voice. “Sorry V.” Desiree sincerely apologized as she practically ran to her own desk, conducting a search for pocket change so she could get lunch while she was out. Veiryl laughs before speaking, “You know I was just messing with you.” Desiree breathes a sigh of relief as she could never tell when Veiryl was joking or not. “But really, where are you going so quickly?” Veiryl asked. “I have a lead to follow.” Desiree answers as she successfully finds some money. Desiree runs to the front door again. “Alright, I’ll be back sometime after noon. So, I’ll see you all then!” She announces to the room just seconds before she closes the door behind her, leaving the station as fast as she had arrived. Desiree starts walking to a particular bar that she believes to be a common spot for some Firebrands before she stops dead in her tracks. She turns around, worrying that Veiryl might be mad at her. Desiree opens the door to the news station and pokes her head in. “Sorry again V!” She says from the door. “It’s alright D, now go! You are wasting daylight.” Veiryl assures her.
Desiree nods and leaves the station once more. The only thing on her mind now is to find out if her hunch about this bar is correct.

Are showers working?
Nyx makes a “wut?” expression, but replies: “On the colony? Yes, those are kinda necessary for the long-term hygiene and comfort. We even have bathtubs in some apartments and two municipal swimming pools, which are stationed on the very equator of the colony, 180 degrees away from eachother to keep the hab-sphere balanced without overstressing mass trim system.” She chuckles. “I remember, how surprised the science team was with my love for swimming. Arceus be my witness, I really love it. When me, Ambs and dad went to visit the Von Braun city on the Moon, which doubled as a breech for the Lunar Mass Driver 1, that’s used to supply colony with resources, I’ve refused to leave the local swimming pool up until the management decided to drain the pool… and then, when I’ve blocked the drains off with telekinesis, they’ve called in the heavy artillery - my dad.” Nyx looks nostalgically. “Strictly speaking, Chief Colony Commander Sebastian Cornwell isn’t my biological dad and even Ambs… Amber isn’t his biological daughter - we are both colonial lab-borns. She even had a different name before she was adopted by Cornwells, but her original dad died on the Earth in an incident and original mom rejected her… She was sure lucky to have Sebastian and Veronica adopt her in their family.” The young-ish Mewtwo sighs, reminiscing something, then continues: “And I was lucky to have her become my big sister. After what’s happened on the New Island and a following incident, to say people were rather… jumpy about possibility of a Mewtwo on the space colony would be to say nothing. Originally, I was planned to get euthanized and incinerated in the fetal stage in order to avoid endangering the colony, but Amber managed to catch my creator right as he was preparing me for euthanasia and following incineration and then, after secretly calling her father via emergency button, managed to stall the process enough for Sebastian to come to the biolab. One session of heavy sobbing and begging later, Chief Colony Commander gave in and ordered doctor to cancel the specimen termination procedure and let it live and actually be born.” Nyx chuckles sadly, going through her memories: “I’ve still had to go through a period of distrust from colonials, but, honestly, I don’t blame them - the events around the New Island were bad enough to scare anyone and having someone with potential to become powerful enough Psychic to literally tear the colony itself apart be present on the colony… well, I think you can see the root of their fears.” She gently strokes the back of her head, feeling the outlines of implants. “For the first few years, I’ve lived in the room, lined with Dark Alloy - a Psy-resistant material, which can only be manufactured in zero-g conditions and which can block off Psychic abilities completely. It was very, very quiet in there… I could still practice my Psychic abilities inside, but they couldn’t reach outside of the room. And for moving around on the colony, I’ve got an isolating implant installed on my skull - so-called ‘Black Hood’, which was originally designed for handling criminal Psychics on the Earth and could be adjusted from either not suppressing Psychic abilities at all to completely blocking them.” The Genetic Pokemon smiles - this time, without a hint of sadness. “Of course, Amber, being Psychic herself, although a human one at that, was very much not happy with this arrangement of things and, along with her adoptive brother Archibald, started an entire campaign to make other colonials accept me as their peer, as a fellow colonial, not as a scary and incredibly dangerous. The best thing? They’ve succeeded! Sooner than expected, I was allowed free tours of the colony…” Her smile falters a bit: “... But I still spent my first years of life in Psychic silence. While I can tolerate the conditions of the colony and lunar cities, where Dark Alloy plating is used extensively for a variety of purposes - mostly related to isolating arcane energy conductors, - the first time I came to Earth, reached the Absentia Natural Preserve, took off my helmet and, making a very big mistake here, turned the Black Hood off…” Nyx grimaces, the memories of this event clearly being highly unpleasant to her: “I couldn’t withstand the sheer insane cacophony of Psychic noise. They all, humans and Pokemon alike, were thinking so damn loudly! It was like staring at the combat laser point-blank. It was like laying below the rocket taking off. I’ve never had a Psychic overload, which spiraled right into the meltdown, that bad, be it before or after this incident. The worst thing? I’ve managed to break the Black Hood controller on accident with my telekinesis going whack, locking it in the ‘off’ state. You can’t even imagine, how horrible my attempt to get back to the Dark Alloy-plated rover was, while I wasn’t sure which of the thoughts and sensory perceptions were mine and which were not.” She sighs. “But, in the end, I did it. As soon as the door was locked, the howling cacophony of the thoughts of others ceased and I was able to reassemble the coherence of my own mind. I didn’t leave the rover up until it was in another Psychic-isolated garage, because otherwise, I wouldn’t have managed to survive another Psychic overload like this.” The Genetic Pokemon looks at the sky. “My current implant, the Dark Hood, is now controlled by direct neural interface and is optimized to help me focus my thoughts turned Psychic into action with accuracy greater than ever before, while selectively filtering out outside influences. I’m now qualifying for becoming a surgeon with specification in non-invasive neurosurgery, done entirely by the means of telekinesis. The life in silence might’ve knee-capped my mentalism at near-zero, but it also helped me to advance the accuracy of my telekinetic abilities to the point my favorite hobby was watchmaking with only a few pre-made specific details imported - everything else I was cutting and shaping from chunks of materials with the power of my mind only. I’ve made enough watches in my life so far to equip the entire colony with them, while keeping each watch unique to at least some extent!” Nyx looks back at the asker. “Sorry for derailing this talk so much. Yes, the showers on the colony work just fine, unless somebody manages to clog them.”

Picking up the Pieces
by Sarah Ichioka
Sarah Ichioka writes the keynote essay for Plasticity, a photography series by visual artist Ernest Goh on plastic pollution found on Punggol Beach, Singapore. The photography series was made during Exactly Foundation Art Residency programme 2018-19.
Sarah Ichioka writes the keynote essay for Plasticity, a photography series on microplastics and plastic pollution found on Singapore’s Punggol Beach, by visual artist, Ernest Goh for Exactly Foundation Art Residency programme.
On each page, a new object catches my eye; like jewels, like candy. I turn them over in my mind’s hand, admiring their lustrous surfaces, vivid colours.
My consumer-lust is aroused from its never too-deep sleep. That red shaft would make a stunning cocktail ring; that green streak, a tasty topping for a cake.
Mysterious figures appear on the white horizon. Our gazes meet. A wide-eyed soldier hoists his bayonet aloft. A wrinkled beast—a yak?—cocks a smirk in my direction. And wait, is that a… missile?
But then, suddenly, my fantasy falls to the ground. A bent red bottle cap, its curved white logo instantly recognisable. Intrigue flattens to disgust. These aren’t exotic goods whose heft begs handling; they’re nothing but so many tiny bits of trash.
++++
People who spend their time in or near the water—surfers, divers, sailors—are amongst the most passionate anti-plastic campaigners, because they see and feel the effects of ocean pollution first-hand. Photographer Ernest Goh traces the origin of his personal anti-plastic journey to a wave-borne shopping bag that smothered his face. Other friends—a married couple—have shared with me their experience of snorkeling and watching pieces of discarded plastic float by—including food packaging designed by the husband’s very own company.
Even when mediated through photos or videos, for folks more frequently in shopping malls than in the surf, there is a visual aspect of the plastic pollution crisis that imparts an immediate sense of accountability. That object I see lodged in the sea turtle’s nose is most certainly a plastic straw, just like the one I sucked my kopi peng through this morning; that cigarette lighter inside the ribcage of the albatross chick’s carcass is unmistakably the same item that my husband hides beneath his cufflinks and credit card receipts.
This visually self-evident character differentiates our plastic pollution crisis from some of the concurrent, compound emergencies we humans have created. Take our carbon pollution crisis: I have to believe climate scientists when they tell me that my holiday flights hasten the thawing of the permafrost. Or our nitrogen pollution crisis: I have to trust hydrology experts when they say that runoff from fertiliser used to grow my lunch causes massive downstream dead zones. In such cases, obfuscation and denial are easier to sustain, whether by ourselves, by industry lobbyists or by politicians.
The comparative legibility of our plastic pollution crisis might suggest that it is more politically “solvable” than some of these other potentially existential, yet less easily illustrated crises we face.
Having accepted our culpability, how might we begin to atone for it?
One response offers an appealing narrative of consumer activism: maybe we can (mindfully) shop our way out of this mess, by opting for more durable, reusable items? Certainly making a habit of carrying a water flask, a canvas shopping bag, and a set of bamboo eating utensils is a decent place to start, not least as a conversation starter and signal of one’s concern.
Perhaps the problem can be solved if we try our best to #recyclebetter, as the current Singaporean campaign urges? Or is recycling merely a “fig leaf on consumerism” as Jane Muncke, Director of Zurich's Food Packaging Forum puts it?
Maybe we should just tidy up a bit more? When I was a kid, my father would take me for an annual volunteer clean-up of the coast near our California home. Ending the day with sore muscles and a sack full of bullet casings (from a nearby shooting range), cigarette butts, condoms, deodorant rollers, and crumbling chunks of styrofoam was deeply satisfying to me, as tangible evidence of my personal concern and participation. Last year, I chaperoned my daughter’s preschool class on a similar clean-up outing to Singapore’s East Coast Park. This time, I felt rather less contented, overwhelmed by the seeming futility of our attempts, observing casual littering by park users and the floating trash ready to wash ashore as soon as we’d cleared our patch of beach.
As it happens, in about the same timespan as that between my leaving university and becoming a mother, the global volume of plastic production doubled. The same report that documents this leap estimates that global industries have produced 8,300 million metric tons of plastic since 1950. 6,400 million metric tons of this plastic—that’s roughly 100 times the weight of the concrete used to build the Three Gorges Dam, the world’s largest manmade structure—have become waste, nearly 80% of which sits in landfills or our natural environment. Less than 10% has been recycled, while the remainder has been incinerated (as has until recently been standard practice in Singapore).
In Singapore itself, plastic waste per capita has increased nearly 20 percent over the last 15 years. Looking at this country’s plastic bag usage alone, about 2,640 bags are thrown away every three seconds.
Projecting forward current production and pollution trends, another report predicts by 2050 our oceans could contain more plastics than fish (by weight), while the plastics industry itself could consume 15% of our annual carbon budget, and 20% of global oil production.
While our plastic pollution crisis is so overwhelmingly large, it is also mind-twistingly small. Here I mean small in the sense probed by Goh’s photographs: the scale of the microplastics, and now nano-plastics, whose presence has been documented in nearly every corner of our terrestrial and aquatic habitats, and which are now entering our food chain, with unknown, but potentially toxic effects.
The proximity of Goh’s plastic-strewn Punggol beach to a seafood restaurant seems apt. We study the food chain and hydrological cycles as concepts in school, but when most of us enter the “real” world we conveniently forget the practical implications of our systemic connections with the rest of nature.
Understanding the interconnected nature of plastic pollution’s causes and effects is a kind of reawakening. It destabilises the narrative that sees human culture as separate from the natural environment. That story of separation has been a necessary psychological cover for the exploitation of living systems that underpins nearly every aspect of our current economic and political order. Once we remember that ecocide is suicide, will we continue it?
Have we trashed Earth beyond habitability? No problem, we’ll just migrate to Mars, as deckhands or stowaways on a tech oligarch’s spaceship. But wait, turns out we’ve already trashed outer space too. Parts of broken satellites and rockets currently amount to over 8 million kilos of space waste. Rather like ocean plastics, the larger bits of space waste are fragmenting into smaller and smaller pieces, which interfere with digital communications and might even hinder future spacecraft launches.
So let’s turn our eyes back to our damaged and depleted, yet still living and magnificent planet.
“Reduce, reuse, recycle, refuse”? Yes of course, let’s do that. But politely declining plastic straws and rinsing our Coke bottles is simply not enough. Also—and in my view, more importantly—we must act not just as individual consumers but collectively, as concerned citizens and social beings.
With this in mind, let me leave you with an alternative “4 Rs” to consider:
Rebel: Let us raise our voices together, unashamed to share our grief, rage, and disgust at the devastation that our overconsumption-based society has unleashed all around us, clogging our commons and poisoning our sources of sustenance. Let’s insist on better, for ourselves, and for the complex living systems upon which our survival depends.
Root: Let us ground the solutions to our plastic pollution crisis in the lived history and culture of Singapore and its region*. What local wisdom and practices, from karung guni men, to metal tiffins, to banana leaf wrappers and beyond, might be usefully revisited for contemporary use? How might technological and behavioural innovations ground themselves in Singaporeans’ particular resources and values?
Relate: Let us decipher and then communicate the underlying systems that perpetuate this global crisis. Let’s understand for example, who benefits from the otherwise dangerous proliferation of plastics, and how they exert influence on policies and regulations. Let’s study why some national and local governments have taken action to solve the plastic pollution crisis more swiftly than others, and what successful changes early actors have made. Let’s explore how our plastic pollution crisis intersects with other economic, environmental and social systems.
And finally, Regenerate: Let us draw inspiration from the natural world to craft materials and manufacturing cycles that are truly waste-free. Let’s design, build, and inhabit systems that proactively repair past damage, clean up our rubbish, and co-create the conditions for our living world to flourish. It will be a beautiful sight.

*Ernest Goh’s MA thesis at Goldsmiths followed a similar vein, looking to historical urban successes to inspire contemporary applications. In Goh’s case, the water fountains of ancient Rome inspired the idea for new public water fountains for Singapore, which will be piloted as a part of this project at ADEX 2019.

What’s in a Name?
Nanowrimo day 21 Featuring Sam Porter Bridges Dystopian future where Kojima’s stuck his dick in everything (I’m into it) Death Stranding, existential terror, solitude, first-person Finished and unedited
There are vast gaps of uninhabited wilderness, verdant, rock-strewn hillsides and towering crags with not a single, living soul for miles and miles. The only creatures which seem interested in making their homes here are oceanic-looking grubs, floating around shards of rock formations that resemble ancient reefs. They haven’t got a care in the world. Must be nice.
The sky maintains a constant mask of gray-white torpor with intermittent breaks of rain. The rumble of thunder always precedes an inverse rainbow and with that rainbow and the black rain that has come to be known as timefall, are the BTs. Are they the spirits of the departed, as a few, fringe cults have claimed since the event now known as the Death Stranding, or are they something else, something directly from The Beach? The answer to that is still in the wind, but there are people across the UCA, connected or otherwise, trying to figure it out. Good luck to ‘em, I say.
What I know about it is… not much. Everyone has a Beach inside them, I guess, a smaller version of the one that sounds like it’s capitalized. When a human being dies, they might retreat to this beach, the spiritual part of them anyway, and there, they’ll rest. Or that was how it used to go… probably.
The first voidout after the Stranding was a jarring occurrence for all of humanity. I honestly can’t remember it and couldn’t if pressed. Maybe I just don’t want to. Maybe my Beach is protecting me. I think of it like a subconscious safe zone where my brain can hide when it’s overtaxed. But I’m different than other people, since I’ve actually seen The Beach… or a Beach. I’m not sure.
What I am is a repatriate, that is, someone who can pull themselves back from the dead, or from the Seam, which I guess is a place between this world and the next, like a womb. I’m not a fetus, though. I’m not one of the BB units, fetuses for whom I’ve always felt more than a little sympathy. They’re equipment, I’m told, but I just can’t see how a human life is equivalent to something that should be used then discarded.
But I’m off-track. I… don’t get to chat much, to unload like this very often. Don’t worry, though, it’s not like people don’t care how I’m doing. It’s in their best interest to give a shit how I’m doing. I deliver their shit, after all. Porters are the lifeblood of what’s left of “America”, after all.
Oh, shit, I’m getting ahead of myself… or behind myself. So, the little floaty guys that hang out near the fucked up reef rocks are called cryptobiotes. You can eat them. They don’t taste like much and they don’t wriggle, which is important because if they did, I swear I’d puke ‘em up every time. I think the name means “hidden life” or something. I don’t… know if everyone can see them. I can, obviously, which is how I know the taste.
There are a few people left in the world who have a certain degree of sensitivity to BTs, their traces, their presence… their footprints. Every time I see one, even in the distance, it’s like I can feel a hand wrapping around my leg, my arm, my neck. It’s… not a good time and I’ve got the scars to prove it. BTs are totally invisible to most of humanity, whatever’s left of it, but there are a few of us out there who suffer from a condition called DOOMS. That’s what gives us our ability to sense and, in some cases, see them.
I can’t see BTs. I’m sort of glad. Unless they get a handle on me, I only see phantoms and those awful hand-footprints they leave. Nothing compares to the gut-clenching terror of a BT catching your scent, or presence, or whatever it is they sense. They can’t see, I don’t think. They just… feel. You can hold your breath and move right on by them, but the moment you gasp, they’re on you and then it’s game over.
BTs are a nightmare for people without DOOMS, an invisible threat that only a BB unit can sense. Running into BTs in the field poses an extra threat to people who cannot see them and are not repatriates, too. See, contact between a BT and a human being is like… vinegar and baking soda. It’s explosive. I don’t really understand chirality, except that it’s a word which comes from ancient Greek and means “hands” or something.
So the chirality between a living human or even semi-living cells like those of a corpse, causes a violent reaction like pre-Stranding nuclear fission… and post-Stranding, honestly. Even now, when humanity is on the brink, there are still some psychos out there who have attacked peaceful human cities with old world nukes. What kind of point can someone make with that kind of violence? But a voidout is so much worse than a nuke.
Repatriates make smaller voidouts, because our energy goes elsewhere, like to The Beach or our Beach. I’m not clear on it, but I’ve read enough. Plenty of people want me to read what they have on events and the new laws of physics, post-Stranding. My position as both a DOOMS sufferer and a repatriate make me uniquely qualified to help expand this research. It’s my reticence to being… handled… that slows it.
Anyway, back to BTs. So, the name “BT” comes from a phrase coined by what remains of the scientific community referring to these creatures (or whatever they are) as “beached things”, implying that they’re stuck between this world and the next. They are “beached”, that is, they are caught here, manifesting in the rain and thunder (which curiously never has what old world files call “lightning” to produce it?), attacking anything remotely living whenever it strays too close.
Even now, I sort of wonder if that’s what happened to most of the wildlife. The only animals left that I’ve ever seen are the cryptobiotes and fish. BTs don’t seem to be able to affect things which are under or suspended over water. They’re sort of like old world vampires, needing certain conditions to proceed. In this case, water repels them… or it has, so far. I’m not holding my breath.
BTs’ attraction to living matter has necessitated the presence of an entire occupation known as corpse disposal. It’s a noble profession, if you ask me. They’re putting their lives on the line every single time they get a call, running a tightly-wrapped body to the nearest incinerator. Fire seems to be the only way to put a human body outside the reach of a BT.
The problem is, when a corpse is burnt, chiralium is still produced and I think it seeds the clouds, making them ripe for rain and where there’s rain, there’re BTs, plain and simple. Incinerator workers are another class of people I don’t envy. I mean, yeah, I’m a porter, but I’m out there, free to move about, hide, and I’ve got DOOMS and all that shit on my side. These people work in the thick of a fog of chiralium. I never hang around incinerators for long.
So I just realized I used the word “chiralium” and kind of expected people to get it. Maybe for clarity I should just take a stab. Chiralium is a new state of… being, or matter. Yeah, it’s like the old world theories of dark matter. Scientists have guessed that it’s been there, floating around the universe since the beginning, but undetectable until the Death Stranding. Unlike dark matter, chiralium is actually measurable, not theoretical.
Chiralium is also extremely dangerous to non-DOOMS people, kind of like radiation, but for the emotions. It’s actually been known to degrade the mental state of a person such that they take their own lives just to escape it. People who suffer from DOOMS don’t even feel it. I’ve experienced weightlessness in the presence of a sizable crop of chiral crystals, and even giddiness, the literal opposite of depression, but never the deep sadness I see in the faces of people who have bene overexposed.
Sometimes, that kind of exposure can be cured by administration of smart drugs like oxytocin. See, anymore, most human brains have been rendered nearly incapable of creating their own and so we, as a species, have learned to manufacture it. That kind of thing sounds like a quick fix recipe for disaster to me, but that’s above my pay grade. If it stops people triggering voidouts, I can’t knock it.
Let’s see… Beaches, DOOMS, chiralium, the Stranding… I guess the last subject is America itself.
The country, or what’s left of it, is divided into cities, scattered across the map and terrified of what’s between. Seeing what’s actually out here in these vast, largely-unoccupied wildernesses, I can understand that fear. If I didn’t want to be alone so desperately, I might do the same, hide in a shelter, cover my head, that kind of thing. But I do, so I can’t.
The life of a porter has seen me traveling all over, delivering packages people can no longer send due to a lack of connection to the chiral network, the dream of an idealistic woman named Bridgette Strand, last president of the United States (now Cities) of America. Maybe I can deliver enough crap to people to keep them supplied for a good long while, but I’m just one person. Maybe it’s time to step up and do something bigger. I was part of Bridges I, the initial effort to travel coast-to-coast and reconnect the country, but… not anymore.
I want to be that again. I’m terrified of taking another name. Sam Porter has suited me for so long, I’d nearly forgotten I was once a Strand. I don’t know if I want to be a Bridges, but I think I need to be… I think she needs me to be.

Zero Waste is not recycling more, but less | Bea Johnson | TEDxM?nster

Zero Waste is not recycling more, but less | Bea Johnson | TEDxM?nster
Translator: Maria Boura Reviewer: Peter van de Ven lift your hand for those who suppose that we must recycle more. Well, i don’t. My query used to be a trick. My identify is Bea Johnson, i’m the author of Zero Waste dwelling, and due to the fact 2008 my family of four produces one jar of waste per yr. Now, when humans find out that I reside a 0 waste subculture, they love to inform me that they too recycle the whole thing. And the city of San Francisco, which has a purpose of zero waste for 2020, tells us that recycling and composting as so much as possible is a approach to gain zero waste.I do not agree at all. Recycling will not be a approach to our waste obstacle. Recycling requires vigour to method, nevertheless it also lacks regulations to coordinate the efforts of manufacturers, patrons, municipalities, and recyclers across the globe. Recycling depends on manner too many variables to make it a dependable answer. What we put in our recycling bin is out of our control. What occurs to it’s uncertain. My city, for instance, recycles, accepts all varieties of plastics. However there may be simplest a marketplace for very few of them. And the few that have the hazard of being recycled are turned into a product with a purpose to now not be recyclable. Once they take a plastic container and turn it into plastic lumber, that lumber is now not recyclable. It is going to end up in a landfill, or worse, the incinerator, where the resource will be misplaced perpetually. For my family, zero waste shouldn’t be about recycling more, it’s truly about recycling much less via preventing waste from coming into our house within the first position. And on this society, well, we are the ambitions of lots of those freebies. Trade cards, for example. I’ve located that in ninety nine% of the circumstances when any person tried to present me a trade card, I’ve already had a contact with the man or woman. If I name a plumber to my residence, and the first thing he does after I open my entrance door is to hand me his business card, there is no factor in accepting it. Without doubt, if he’s at my front door, well, he has my deal with. If he has my tackle, I’ve given it to him; we’ve got already been in touch.
