hi bones! for life/education/employment reasons I will probably be moving to seattle in a year or so. if you have the spoons and inclination, i'd welcome any advice for someone who wants to do right by hir new community/city but also wants to take care of hirself. (and/or just advice for moving to seattle in general!) i'm a neurodivergent, white, mentally ill butch lesbian, if that affects the advice any. thanks for all the incredible book excerpts and writing thoughts you post!
there’s a breakfast place in Fremont called Roxie’s that does latkes instead of english muffins in their benedicts and where you can get an amazing reuben.
there’s also a Cuban sandwich joint called Paseo’s up the hill where you can get an extremely messy and life changing sandwich. god willing there’s still a Mexican sushi place in Wallingford right down the block from Changes the gay bar.
carry change with you and give it to anyone who asks and remember their face, remember where you saw them, place them on a mental map in a way that reinforces their worth as a full and complete human being. if you don’t have change you apologize with intention. you will have some next time. never offer to substitute food for change; this is a terrible insult.
there’s a queer library at a queer community center called Gay City in Capitol Hill where you can sit and read and check out books and access other community services like therapy and social support.
pay attention to the caste system at work wherever you go in seattle. It’s ever-present and exerts constant psychic force on everyone inside city limits. the people who the city refuses to house or treat flock there because seattle technically offers many services for help and healing, but these services have been allowed to exist in a state of complete overwhelm for decades by city officials who support and value the caste system. the mad the sick and the unhoused are meant to float through third and pine and westlake and the waterfront for the Real people to practice dissociating from. this perpetual dissociation colors the whole city. everyone is complicit. everyone swears not to know what they know and see what they see. everyone receives patient conditioning to sort and categorize the shapes they see moving through the city of seattle as human or inhuman and resisting this conditioning will require all of your attention and insight. you will be asked at every second to betray yourself.
read the archives of the view from Nathan’s bus
read about the Duwamish. go down and buy something from the woodcarvers by the ferris wheel. know that the canoes and masks and religious items inside the restaurant next door were hand carved by a white conservative guy who bought a bunch of books on coastal Salish art and copied as best he could.
there is queer community. the lesbian book club that changed the trajectory of my life isn’t the only one. if you have it in you to look for opportunities and spaces to be around the bodies you need to survive, you will find them.
do not wear headphones while out and about unless absolutely necessary. you need to be able to be spoken to.
go watch the sunset at fremont peak park and if you feel absolutely overwhelmed and alien in the world know that a twenty two to twenty eight year old version of me is sitting somewhere behind you and to your left. look out for a blonde cat and the dinosaur village.
don’t call the cops.

Nightlife in Las Vegas for After Dark Fun and Excitement
Everyone comes out to have fun when the neon lights switch on in Sin City. This destination that is bustling with activities round the clock never runs short of after-dark activities that you shouldn’t miss during your stay in Las Vegas.
The following are some of the best spots in the city for parties and nightlife in general:
Hakkasan Nightclub
Hakkasan Nightclub outdoes the rest as far as entertainment and size are concerned. It features a two-story restaurant with a modern design to serve as the ideal place to warm up during the night.
The club made up of levels five, four, and three has several rooms, each with its distinct vibe and feel. You can come here for dinner and then stay the rest of the night.
Marquee Nightclub & Dayclub
Enjoy and relax while sipping the bottle service offerings and specialty cocktails of Marquee Nightclub. Reservations are recommended here and guests should be over 21 years old.
Meanwhile, the Marquee Dayclub is surrounded by The Strip’s thriving energy, making it the ideal escape during the daytime. The place offers an authentic experiential evolution of food, sunlight, and music.
Relax in the poolside environment and take delight in the bottle service offerings, specialty cocktails, and signature food menu while listening to the resident DJ.
Minus 5 Ice Lounge
Minus 5 Ice Lounge is undoubtedly the coolest spot in Las Vegas as far as bars are concerned. The place is located in a huge freezer and all the things inside are made of ice, from the bar itself to the seats, the chandeliers, the walls, and the very glasses where the drinks are served.
Paying the $39 cover issues you a warm faux fur coat or parka during your stay. Lights and music form a surreal setting that is a perfect pair with other frozen goodies. This is a night out you will never forget at all.
Park on Fremont
Park on Freemont is everything you expect from a beer garden and gastropub. It has a very cool hipster bar that features the must-have taxidermy and enough space to stretch out below café lights in the back. This gives you a feel of Austin, Texas in Vegas, and is also open for weekend brunch.
Red Square
Some of the best-kept secrets of Las Vegas are none other than the happy hours and even the reverse happy hours right after 10 PM. Check out the bar of gourmet restaurants such as Aria’s American Fish for great deals on refreshing drunks and delightful bites like mac n cheese and lobster rolls.
Drop by at Mandalay Bay’s Red Square Bar for a taste of caviar and drinks specials, or head over to the nearby Stripsteak. Grab some of the cocktails at Comme Ça at the Cosmopolitan or visit Fashion Show Mall and El Segundo Sol or RA Sushi. Both Sushi Roku and Trevi inside Caesars’ Forum Shops also offer happy hour specials guaranteed to put a big smile on your face.
Exciting nightlife awaits you in Las Vegas and OceanBeachTravel.com by Bradley Schnickel will give you more ideas on how to spend your after-dark hours on the strip.

Pav Bhaji Hut, 37100 Fremont Blvd, Ste A, Fremont, CA 94536
Did you know that over 15 million people eat pav bhaji on an average day in Mumbai? The popular Mumbai street food started as the lunchtime staple for the textile mill workers in Mumbai in the 1850s. Later, it became a popular street food throughout India. I learned about these pav bhaji facts at Pav Bhaji Hut (PBH).
PBH got its start in Ahmedabad, India. They claim to be the first restaurants and food trucks in the US dedicated to serving authentic pav bhaji. In fact, there’s only one dish on the menu, pav bhaji, with the option to add amul cheese ($2.49) or extra pav ($3,99). An order of pav bhaji is $12.99. You can also ask for an adjustment in the spice level. Traditionally, it is a spicy curry. The Amul cheese was grated. It’s similar to mozzarella, mild in flavor.
They also serve cold pressed juices. Seems a bit strange to have juice with such a rich curry, but given the heat in Mumbai, juice must always sound appealing.
Pav bhaji is a vegetable curry (tomato, onion, potatoes, cilantro, garlic) with a special blend of spices called bhaji masala, served with hot buttered Portuguese rolls. They’re like King’s Hawaiian rolls (also Portuguese-inspired), but PBH doesn’t use King’s Hawaiian rolls. PBH uses Amul butter (a blend of cow milk and buffalo milk) imported from India and cooks on an original Indian tawa pan. It’s vegetarian.
Pav bhaji with cheese: The Amul cheese was served on the side, along with chopped red onions, a lime wedge, and two hot buttered pav. The curry was topped with a pat of butter and chopped cilantro. The curry is very dark and it’s hard to tell what vegetables are in it. It’s like a thick, spicy gravy with mashed veggies. It’s bold in flavor, oily, and heavily spiced. I found it a bit too salty. The amount of cheese they gave me was very generous. I only used a little. I would omit the cheese next time. The hot buttered rolls were the best part – soft, but with slightly crispy edges, buttery.
The space is attractive and has a chain like feel. It’s fairly large and looks newish. Street parking was easy to find and the complex has its own parking as well. I received a 5% cash discount.
4 out of 5 stars

2024 bay area chicken burritos - part 1
Let's go.
Tacos the King David / El Camino & Halford / $12
Okay. Wrapped in paper so the foil is clean. Higher ratio of rice and beans, which I like. Truck.
Birrieria y Taqueria La Gran Señora / El Camino & Sycamore / $11.82
Decent. Might've had cream or cheese in there even though I said leave it out. Truck.
Mex Cal on Wheels / El Camino & Scott / $13
Good, but they give triangle tortilla chips. Meat feels like proper chopped grilled chicken. Truck.
Tacos El Noa Noa / Fair Oaks & Evelyn (red truck) / $13.62
Okay. Might've had cream or cheese in there even though I said leave it out. They toast the tortilla real nice. Truck.
⭐Taqueria El Grullo / Fair Oaks & Evelyn (corner restaurant) / $13.03
Really good stewed chicken, but they give ground corn chips. Stewed chicken makes for messier foil. Restaurant.
Sonora Taqueria / Fair Oaks & Ahwanee / $12.56
Okay. Just fine. Notable but still good amount of chopped onion. Truck.
Mercado la Torre / Fair Oaks & Evelyn (middle restaurant) / $14.18
Another surprisingly good stewed chicken, but not as messy as the place next door. Hefty too. This pair of restaurants doing it the same way is weird. Gave triangle tortilla chips. The only reason to choose the other place is the price difference. Restaurant.
Tacos La Guerita / Fair Oaks & Caliente / $13.20
Decent. Detected some chewiness/toughness in the meat. Gave triangle tortilla chips. Truck.
La Victoria Taqueria #1 / San Carlos & Third / $12.52
Good chicken desebrado, not too messy but lacking some flavor. Restaurant.
Iguanas Home Of The Burritozilla / Third & San Carlos / $13.40
Meh chipotle chicken due to excess water content from extra veggies. Really bland. Maybe go back for the standard chicken. Restaurant.
Tacos Azteca / Fremont & Sunnyvale-Saratoga / $11 + tax
Good chicken. Good balance of the rice, beans, and a few chopped veggies like onions and tomatoes and cilantro. Toasty tortilla. Only problem was the tortilla started to tear and the burrito would fall apart. Truck.
⭐Chavez Supermarket / Fair Oaks & Caliente / $11 + tax
That is the stuff. Slightly smaller than others, but great chicken and good balance of all the ingredients. The regular comes with cream so I have to request to exclude it next time. Market with food for takeout.
Tres Potrillos Taqueria / Fair Oaks & Caliente / $13.35
Good chicken desebrado. Slightly messy foil. Go back for grilled chicken. Restaurant.
⭐ La Azteca Taqueria / El Camino & Sunnyvale-Saratoga / $12
Oh that's good. Maybe more balanced toward rice than protein, but satisfying and tasty. Only catch here is it's cash only and a truck that isn't always there. Truck.
La Costeña / Middlefield & Whisman / $9
Decent pollo borracho with red sauce. Kind of aguado and light on protein but can't beat the price. Pretty sure adobado is the best so try that next time. Red sauce made for a bit of mess on the foil, try a different sauce. Restaurant.
Garcia's Taqueria / Fair Oaks & El Camino / $13.61
Decent desebrado but kinda dry. Substantial amount of protein. Comes with very greasy triangle chips. Restaurant.
La Picosita Azteca / Maude & Bayview / $13.50
Meh chicken with some chewiness, refried beans, possibly cheese. Truck.
⭐ Lopez Taqueria / Fair Oaks & Arques / $11.88
Really hefty and tasty stewed chicken. Restaurant.
Un Poquito Mas / Winchester & Moorpark / $13
Hefty but too dry with a ton of rice. Truck.

Week 40: RIP my new normal (Welcome to Fremont)
Heyyyyy there everybody...got some news for y'all...
I moved again. Except it's even better than that, because I got a call at 12:00 on Tuesday saying that a missionary was departing the mission for medical treatment and that I needed to be able to take his place in the little community of Fremont, Michigan by 6:30 that night. 5 hours of notice to be packed and in the car. I would not recommend it folks. I went to my volunteering obligation immediately after receiving the call, and spent the rest of the day packing. Elder Boe and Elder Larsen were very sad along with me, and insisted that we do something fun together before we left. So, we went to a chicken restaurant that had been highly recommended by my old pal Elder Wilchek and enjoyed each other's company.
By that night I arrived in Fremont. Fremont is a cute little town, I actually do like it a lot. It's got a bustling little downtown area and has access to some very useful stores, both advantages compared to my last small town area. I wasn't a happy camper to be going back to a rural area...serving in Kalkaska was quite an experience and while I am so grateful to have had it I did not feel ready to deal with the pressures of small town missionary work again quite so soon.
Anyways, having been here for about a week now I've mostly accepted my situation. There are several cool things about being in Fremont, and my new companion (Elder Thornton) and I do get along. We've got one really awesome young new member and we've seen some little miracles already!
The work in Fremont is very slow at the moment (It's very frustrating to have finally built some momentum in N. Muskegon only to get dropped into another stalled area) but we do have Pam...
Let me tell you about Pam. Pam is the nicest lady I've ever met. She's respectful, insightful, and very ready to consider what we have to say. We invited a member to my first lesson with her (we've set a goal to involve the members in our teaching) and that was very inspired...we discovered after inviting that member that he and Pam are neighbors! As we studied that night, that member was able to bond with Pam over several shared life experiences and the spirit was felt very strongly in the room. It's always so amazing to see what can happen when we apply ourselves to making our lessons the best they can be! Missionary work is hard, but when I try my best I find that the Lord often paves the way to success in unexpected ways.
As always, more has happened but I think I'll leave it there for now. I don't know what the next sideways thing to happen to me will be (pray for me please...) but I trust that it will be for the good of myself and others.
Sure love you all <3

Dosa Biryanizz Chaat Café, 39447 Fremont Blvd, Fremont (Central Downtown), CA 94538
Best dosas…and I’ve had a lot of dosas. Dosa Biriyanizz is in a strip mall in Central Fremont, not far from Fremont Hub (it’s still called Fremont Hub?). Its specialties are dosas, biryanis, and butter chicken or so I was told. The menu also includes appetizers (e.g., pakora, samosa), tandoori, chaats, curries, naan, Indo-Chinese dishes (noodles, fried rice), desserts, and beverages.
Love how there’s a wide variety of dosa to choose from. Dosas are made with a fermented batter of rice & lentils cooked on a hot griddle and cooked to a golden crisp. It’s served with sambar (lentil vegetable soup), peanut sauce, coconut sauce, and tomato sauce (aka chutney).
Order from the server. Water is provided without asking for it.
Masala chai ($2.99)
Chittoor spicy dosa ($11.99): Gigantic dosa (over a foot long) with a spicy paste that’s spread on the inside, it’s super thin and extra crispy. The sauces are really good too. Never had dosa with peanut sauce before. The sambar (lentil) soup was very good.
Ghee podi dosa ($11.99): Also gigantic, thin, and extra crispy. You can taste coconut and butter. Greasier than the Chittoor spicy dosa but still very good.
It’s a nice-looking large restaurant that looks like it might have once been a diner but has obviously been remodeled. The walls are bright and hung with artwork of dancers. The service seems a little slow but is friendly. They play Indian music videos, so you can always watch those while you’re waiting or eating. Parking was easy to find.
5 of 5 stars

Apartments For Rent in Oakland in the $600 Range
Whether you are a couple, a family, or a single person, if you are looking for a place to call home, Oakland is a great place to start. It offers a lot for its residents, including access to highways and public green spaces. In addition, the weather is great, and the city has a high median household income. These factors are the reasons that Oakland is one of the hottest destinations for young professionals and families.
While Oakland is not the cheapest place in the Bay Area, it does have a few options that offer cheap apartments. In fact, you can find a 3 bedroom apartment Oakland with hardwood flooring, on-site laundry, and a garage for less than $600 per month.
However, while these apartments may be cheap, they may also be far from downtown and amenities. It may be a good idea to check out the best neighborhoods for your budget. The most affordable neighborhoods include Harrington, Fremont, and Jefferson. However, the most expensive neighborhoods in Oakland include Prescott and Port Oakland.
A 2-bedroom home with a large living room and skylight is among the best apts for rent in Oakland in $600. In addition to a full bath, there is also a laundry room and on-site garage parking.
About Oakland
Oakland has an incredible array of green spaces and parks to explore. These areas are great for biking, running, and walking. You can also enjoy art cocktails at Cafe Von Kleef or tiki drinks at The Kon-Tiki. Also, you can choose from a number of great restaurants, such as the popular Bar Rafael.
The average Oakland apartment is a little over $2,800 per month. Due to the high demand for housing in the area, the price is also likely to keep going up. However, Oakland's rent prices are reasonable considering the city's location and opportunities.
The best Oakland apartments may be in older buildings that need some work. They may also have certain restrictions, including no co-signers or guarantors. However, if you are a responsible renter, you can find a great deal.
The best apartments for rent in Oakland are likely the ones that have a walkable route to everything you need. You may also take help from raj properties to know about good deals and avoid the hassle of comparing apartments. You'll also want to take the size of the apartment into consideration, as it plays a big role in the price.
Conclusion
The best apartments for rent in Oakland may also be the ones that are a little out of town. If you are looking for a place to call your own, you can check out apartments in the Cleveland Heights or Clorox neighborhoods.
In addition, you can find a nice place to stay for under $2,600 in Oakland's Fruitvale Station neighborhood. While the best apts for rent in Oakland in $600 price range may not be as impressive as the best apartments for rent in San Francisco, there are still some great options to choose from
