MAGICAL RANGED DPS

Magic is fucking cool, man

The Magic DPS in FFXIV are all fairly varied in their own right, but I personally find that they range from deceptively hard to outright brainless, and it's no surprise who's in my last place if you've been paying attention.

Pictomancer

As of 7.05, Pictomancer remains the most overtuned, powerful caster in the game. It's a huge surprise that it hasn't been nerfed yet, but I cannot complain. Pictomancer's kit had a surprising free-flow style to it where most of what you're doing, as long as you understand why you're doing it, will contribute to the party. By its design it has one of the most committed cast times of all the Magic DPS and thus to make up for all the time NOT spent DPSing, your canvas magic makes up for in HUGE DPS. It's no surprise to see them top-DPSing on third-party tools. But like I said, it's a deceptively hard class. Between mechanics, juggling your canvases and building up Aetherhues to gain negative palette, you're constantly working up towards your burst until 2 minute hits and you release EVERYTHING you've saved up. And it feels fantastic. And its pseudo-leylines skill is extremely unique and rewards good playing and knowledge of the raid. Definitely the most well-thought out class overall.

2. Black Mage

The Great Sword of FFXIV made into a class. It boasts (what's supposed to be) high DPS with the tradeoff being long cast times and stationary playing. It's a class that rewards knowing the fight and understanding your kit well to be extremely effective in-combat and I hope they never change it. But it's one of those classes that you NEED to have community knowledge and guides on if you wish to be effective, otherwise you're dead weight. I think more classes should be this difficult and punishing if not played right, but that's just me. In Dawntrail, it's had a very rocky start and was recently changed to play like it did in Endwalker, which I am thankful for. But right now, its damage is pitiful for what's supposed to be THE premiere selfish DPS class. Still better than the other two on the list, but no where near where it should be for how much work you put in unlike Pictomancer.

3. Red Mage

Red Mage didn't exactly change much between Endwalker and Dawntrail. All of its new skills, just added onto the finishers and it still kept its utility as a pseudo-healer and situational resser (thank god). Ironically enough, of all the caster classes I feel that Red Mage is the class that has the least mobility. There's very few movement options that Red Mage has and outside of its finishers, you move very little unless you learn to slidecast. Probably my least played class not because it's bad, but because it has more fun alternatives for me.

4. Summoner

If Dancer didn't exist, this would be the most boring class to me, so we'll settle for second. Its Shadowbringers counterpart was full of an old and outdated design that also dealt with the infamous pet actions that didn't work most of the time. And yet, it was extremely engaging what with micro-managing your Summoned pet and taking in the power of Primals to do devastating damage. It was the first class in FFXIV that forced me to actually study how it worked, and I felt satisfied figuring it out. In Endwalker they had drastically changed it to better encompass the Summoner identity and at the same time reducing its kit to what's basically baby's first color identifier. I had held out hope that Dawntrail would have added more complexity because as it stood, it was a super bare bones class, but unfortunately it seems that they felt they didn't need to do any more to it than just add another phase and swap around Bahamut and Phoenix. To aptly describe the change would be the saddest fall from grace.

BLUE MAGE #1 STILL THE BEST FOREVER

In all seriousness, I like the role it's been put in by the community. Because none of the spells you learn are locked behind levels, its potential damage output is insanely high at any level, making it the perfect choice to farm Fates or old content with. It's the key reason why I'm even able to farm as many Aetheryte tickets as possible, making me save a LOT of gil, especially as a crafter and gatherer.

at last!!!! i played through my first ace attorney game and i'm delighted!

is ace attorney investigations: miles edgeworth (2009) the best first introduction to the series? probably not, but it's what the random generator picked, so it's what we're rolling with.

well, okay, so... i may or may not have played a little bit of the phoenix wright games by the time i'm writing this, but definitely not enough to get most references this game makes, lol. it did give me an insight into the franchise's mechanics though, and confirmed that they all share these same bones more or less.

there's a crime (usually a murder), you might even see in an intro who's the culprit, you collect evidence, make connections, most importantly though, you cross-examine a bunch of people, looking for flaws and contradictions in their statements.

the extra thing about investigations on that front seems to be well... the extra investigations. it mostly comes up in a so-called logic section where you can connect different clues together. this is a mechanic that's already a staple of a lot of detective games, except of course here connecting the wrong clues also punishes you through the game's penalty system. speaking of which...

oh my god, you do gotta be pulling clues out your ass sometimes. after a while, i dif get the hang of the game, and learned where to push (basically: almost everywhere if i wanted to be safe), and at which exact point i needed to present something i already knew was fishy, but maybe that statement actually isn't specific enough and i need to wait for another section of the game where this comes up with a more precise wording, and okay, why isn't this clue the right one??? it literally means what we want it to mean, aaaaaaaaaaa

but yes, i'm fine, and i didn't curse everyone and their moms at the end section of the game where i kept losing that one point i had in the penalty system at a certain point, and then the game loadad to a much earlier section, even when i manually saved after it, and i had to fast forward a bunch of steps every. single. time, and yes, i am fine, and i was fine, what do you mean i don'T sEEm fInE...

moving on. overall, i did have a lot of fun with this game! i enjoyed the mechanics (for the most part), the characters were delightful (franziska, my beloved <3), and their limited move sets and animations are truly something else. i now understand why these games have rewired so many people's brains i think.

the overall story that connects the 5 episodes also comes together quite nicely by the end, however, i did find the way the different episodes jumped back and forth through the timeline needlessly confusing. i love a nonlinear story, but here, i just had the constant sense that the game is probably breaking its own continuity every time. i can't even tell you if that was the case, but it did seem weird that the characters only seemed to have remember certain past events once we played through those episodes. it was a weird choice for sure.

unexpectedly, there's also a bit of what appears to be some character development for miles, and i liked how some of the relationships changed through the different episodes. there's a particular wolf man that really grew on me by the end especially.

in any case, good times all around! can only really recommend this one tbh, no complaints for me.

except...

i really wish this game had a pc release, and i didn't have to play it on my phone.

yup, you heard that right, i played this game through my phone. it was originally released for the nintendo ds, but only got ported to android and ios so far. which does bum me out a bit, especially now, that i had a bit of playtime of some of the ace attorney games that had pc ports, and found it a much superior experience.

don't get me wrong, there's nothing missing with the mobile ports, the controls work perfectly in this medium, etc, but i find that for mobile games, you usually want something that a player can drop at a moment's notice, instead of something that has a more elaborate, longer narrative structure to it. this game probably worked perfectly for a handheld console, but a phone isn't really the same thing. you'll inevitably start thinking about closing the game to look at something else, or your battery gets drained, or there's a cut scene where you have to keep tapping your screen to avoid the screensaver kicking in, etc.

or maybe it's just me, and i'm the weird one for not knowing how to use my phone for gaming.

anyway, my conclusion stands though, this game is a delight, and i can't wait to play through more of the series.

AA rhythm games hcs, because why not?

Phoenix : Can't barely make a call with his cellphone. He sucks.

Miles : He downloaded (1) rhythm game because it had a collab with the Steel Samurai. Played one song, failed, and never played again.

Pearl : She only plays mobile idol rhythm games. She plays the "easiest" difficulties but is doing good with said difficulties. Gets too overwhelmed if it's too hard. As god-tier luck and also likes to farm (but doesn't realize until she notices she's been playing for 3 hours). She likes to rank.

Godot : Don't know why he has a Guitar Hero player vibe. It's getting late and I should go to sleep.

Ema : She plays obscure rhythm games with unusual mechanics. Doesn't play the hardest difficulties but not the easiest either, and she's pretty good.

Apollo : He's a nerd, and yes, also a rhythm game nerd. I think he's pretty versatile, but started playing mobile rhythm games recently (honestly I was torn between him being a gamer or him just playing Candy Crush).

He's good, like holy shit. And competitive, so if there's a ranking system, he will rank.

He doesn't look like those guys who play the hardest songs ever while looking perfectly calm. Apollo looks like he's going to explode at any moment.

His favs are probably DDR and beatmania, he's an arcade guy. I can picture playing arcades with Clay when they were younger. He's not been to the arcade recently, though...

Klavier : He's not a gamer, and he sucks. He probably tried Guitar Hero at some point and failed miserably.

He would stop playing immediately because he didn't get it perfect on his first try.

Simon : He's not a gamer either, but he learns quickly (to Apollo's dismay, because he can get to his level quickly). He likes weeb rhythm games, but prefers the gacha aspect. His favs are Love Live, Bandori, Project Sekai and his fav characters are respectively Ruby, Rimi and Minori. Also a whale.

Athena : I'm not sure she would be a huge rhythm game player, but when she does give it a try, she prefers game where she has to move like DDR, Beatsaber or Taiko. She's not that good because she doesn't play a lot but she has so much fun and energy she doesn't really care.

Kay : Cheats. Good for her honestly.

Sebastien : He's not good at all, but tries his best (ahaha), can't do it and has a meltdown.

Starrk — Okay, this one is good. I have no complaints. The hair is NEAT, I like the mechanical aspects on his legs, and the black is fantastic. This is a solid design that does Starrk justice and makes him look intimidating as fuck. I like that there are some hints of Lilynette in him, however, my main complaint is that there aren’t enough. And that Lily doesn’t get one of these designs too. 8/10, points removed for lack of baby girl.

Barragan — His release was already pretty much perfect. This design is just... extra. It’s cool, yeah, but in that “ninja robot superhero” kind of way where it’s too much. Not really an improvement, but that’s just because it was impossible to improve Barragan, in the first place. 5/10 because he’s still neat.

Halibel — There are things that I like here and things that I don’t. The tail is good. The hairstyle is lovely. But can we PLEASE give the poor woman some clothes??? I don’t know who the fuck is designing these, but I’m sick and tired of Halibel being so overly sexualized. I have no problems with some titty, but this is just demeaning. 6/10, points removed for unnecessary fanservice.

Ulquiorra — Ehhhh, I can live with it. It’s not spectacular, but at least he doesn’t look stupid. They’re going WAY too hard with the angel/demon theme, and I don’t like that his wings are feathery now? That said, there’s really nothing wrong here. He looks decent and the white hair is pretty interesting. 7/10.

Nnoitra — THIS IS THE BEST ONE!!! Yes, yes, yes!!!! I have 0 complaints here. Nnoitra looks freaking AWESOME and I’m all for everything that’s going on in this design!! The claws! The blades! The bug aspects! The yellow glow! It’s just,, so cool,, I’m beyond happy that the designers did so well for Nnoi. He deserves it. He really does. 10/10.

Grimmjow — His release is fucking stupid, to begin with, and this just makes it worse. I do NOT like the furry angle going on here. It’s not cool. It’s not threatening. The upper half is cool enough and I actually really like his hair, but the lower half of his body just kills it for me. Please, please, someone give Grimmjow a design that doesn’t look dumb. 1/10.

Zommari — Again, there are things here that I like and things that I don’t. It’s DEFINITELY an improvement over his normal release, but something is... off. I guess it’s the lower half of the body that’s bothering me? And again, Zommari is just... yeah. I wish canon had given him better. The four arms are cool af though, and I like the extra eyes. 4/10.

Szayel — I DON’T LIKE THIS!!!! He’s a WORM, not a phoenix or whatever the fuck is going on here!!! Everything about this design puts me off. It doesn’t suit him at all. They could have done so much better, but no. They could have made him so much creepier, but no. 2/10.

Aaroniero — Maybe it’s just because I have such strong feelings about Aaroniero and what he should look like, but I don’t really like this one. I appreciate that they’re giving my boy attention though, and it is a pretty cool design! ...if I ignore the fact that it’s very against all of my headcanons. Still, there are plenty of tentacles and he’s one freaky little dude, so I can’t really complain. 6/10.

Yammy — It’s... an improvement? I guess??? Yammy’s design has always kind of bugged me (and is just kind of boring), and this is, well, making it slightly better. I can’t say much about Yammy. He’s the only Hollow who I don’t have strong feelings about. 3/10.

During the Celestial ball, Lilian noticed that Merula didn’t have anyone to dance with and offered to dance with her. After the Celestial Ball, Merula’s Attitude softened to a degree. While Lilian was still being teased about how tall she was, she was no longer harassed for being a muggle, nor was she mocked for her passions. While Merula wouldn’t outright ask for help from Lilian, She would never deny Lilian helping her.

Generally the attitude of the two was always Lilian genuinely trying to learn about Merula while Merula made an effort to understand Lilian and where she was from. Eventually Mistrust and Resentment would make way to curiosity and intrigue.

Only when Lilian had saved Merula’s life from Dementors had she finally figured out her mixed feelings for Lilian, realizing that she had fallen in love with the quiet muggle born witch, eccentricities and all.

[The following is an excerpt from the book The Craftswoman, a biography on the Life and Philosophies of Lilian Le’Reau]

Interviewer: What do you know of Mrs. Le’Reau? Headmistress Rowan Hubei Khanna: Lilian? Wow, where do I begin… She was always quiet. It was almost as if she were watching everything that happened for the sake of safety and precautions. Like she was always expecting the worst to happen to her no matter what. But given her history I wouldn’t put it past her.

I: Could you please elaborate on that? Headmistress Khanna: Well, I suppose so. When Lilian was around the age of five, she and her mother were attacked by a rogue Death Eater, one of the remnants of the first wizarding war. A lot of people died that day, several more had to have their memory erased.

I: With the Memory Erasing Charm, yes. The report of ‘The Market Massacre’ were in the papers for weeks after the incident, if I recall. Headmistress Khanna: Right. Well, This death eater had a particular goal in mind. I was told that he kept on rambling about how he was gonna make new army, one to combat the remnants of the Order of Phoenix. He had planned on kidnapping Children with magical talent in order to build this order.

I: Fortunately, the Auror Shamus McKinley was nearby to save her. He not only saved her, but dispatched the dark wizard as well, yes? Headmistress Khanna: While this is true, it still had its ramifications. No one goes through that sort of experience the same. Lilian didn’t like to talk about where she came from or about her childhood.

I: Well, how about her years alongside you at Hogwarts? How would you describe that? Headmistress Khana: Our time at Hogwarts was actually rather mundane compared to the adventures of our other classmates. Lilian and I were generally the part of the plan that collected information and helped solve the riddles of the vaults, rather than actually fighting any of the curses there. Otherwise, much of her time was spent studying, trying to figure out new ways to apply spells and context of said spells, and honing her own personal abilities. Like I said, a rather average Hogwarts tenure for the both of us.

I: Alright. How about during the battle of Hogwarts? Or perhaps anything during then and your graduation of Hogwarts? Headmistress Khanna: The time before the battle of Hogwarts, I can't testify for. For a while, most of us fell out of contact as we moved on with our lives, trying to make a name for ourselves in our own fields. But…

I: It’s okay if you would like to avoid this subject. Headmistress Khanna: No no, it needs to be said. During the battle of Hogwarts, a lot of us were scared. None of us had been in this sort of conflict before, and those of us that had weren't ready for what we faced. Yet there Lilian was, setting up perimeters and directing people to the best suited jobs to help defend. She even brought in nearly a dozen golems to assist in the defense. We were lucky too, since those were the only things stopping the main host of trolls from climbing up the bridge. The battle itself is a blur, but when the dust settled, we all saw Lilian slumped against a wall, babbling on about equations and how many litres of blood she felt she had lost. She was missing her arm and leg, surrounded by a dozen or so dark wizards.

I: Thank you, Headmistress. I think that’ll be all for now. Headmistress Khanna: I appreciate the need to document Lilian’s life. She’d be too busy to actually sit down and write it herself, believe it or not.

~PERSONALITY~

Lilian is a very open minded individual. Creative and Intelligent, She will always see projects through to the end, even if she already knows that the result will be failure. Despite the innumerable amount of failures that she’s had, Lilian always finds a way to take joy from any situation. While she mainly focuses on her work, she is a rather quiet and shy woman despite her imposing stature and very apparent abilities. She doesn’t like to brag, nor is she prone to any outwardly negative emotions.

She does have several flaws though, first and foremost being her inability to cope with overly strong negative stimuli as well as a tendency to hyper fixate on a project at hand, often forgetting to eat and rest until her body physically forces her to sustain itself. (most common being her collapsing from exhaustion and sleep deprivation.)

While not typically a fighter, Lilian has mastered the Patronus charm to astonishing success, manifesting three or more Wolf patroni with one casting.

While she is missing her left arm and right leg from the joints down, Lilian has since made prosthetic arms that are not only nearly identical to the previous limbs, they are far stronger than steel and well crafted enough to fool Muggles unless they closely inspect the hand in question.

Lilian married Merula nearly a year after the Battle of Hogwarts

In order to maintain hold of her tools while working and simultaneously casting spells, Lilian has mastered both the art of wandless and silent spellcasting.

Lilian owns a machine shop in London, making both Muggle and Magical items for multiple clients. She is allowed to do this through the employment of Squibs. This also allows her to take Auror Interns, teaching them how muggle technology works.

Lilian attempts to pioneer Golemancy, even attempting to have it recognized as an official practice of magic.

After Much convincing and reassuring, Lilian managed to get Merula to move to the Muggle world. Even then, this was only after several charms had been cast to help hide their magical nature from Ordinary Muggles. (Merula is particularly keen on cell phones.)

After several letters, Lilian agrees to teach several Magic Theory classes at Beauxbatons, much to the joy of several students and faculty. Lilian even demonstrates the magic and technology behind her prosthetics, inspiring the next generation of magic craftsmen and women.

With the 2D sprites, I can sometimes edit them to create a more appropriate look, but there are occasions where a lack of different sprites hinders my creativity with their personalities (ex. Marvin Grossberg, Lisa Basil, etc.). In the case of 3D characters, there’s usually enough variety in their movements for me to capture the right emotions. Especially with Ms. Moody herself.

Co-Mod: Well, that explains a lot. I was beginning to wonder why so many people liked those checkboxes so much. Unfortunately, I don’t have a solution as someone who’s as ignorant as Phoenix when it comes to mobile devices. I asked Mod Maya about it, and she suggested that the best idea is to just delete the hashtags you don’t want after they all appear. Sure, it’s a hassle, but that’s technology for you.

Co-Mod: For me, Farewell, My Turnabout was an interesting case for both good and bad reasons. In terms of the story, it had great characters, surprising plot twists (including one that was fairly hard to see coming), a whole lot of suspense, and one of the most satisfying breakdowns in the series. Not to mention the heartwarming reunification near the end.

Besides being super sweet, seeing Maya safe and sound was the perfect way to resolve the unrelenting suspense of the trial.

In terms of the mechanics, on the other hand, it was mostly dreadful. There were at least a couple of parts where you’re faced with an all-or-nothing decision to make without much in the way of hints, and the final decision was unfair on a number of levels. Besides having to read Phoenix’s mind to know what the right answer is, your punishment for guessing wrong is just flat-out cruel. I’m sure I don’t need to go into detail with that one.

The Adventure of the Runaway Room was a lot of fun for me, even if I only watched it instead of playing it, and I don’t have many complaints about it, if any. In it, we’re introduced to the Jurist System, we meet all sorts of hilarious British folks, and things end quite unexpectedly, to say the least.

I’m just now realizing why you asked about these two cases in particular, by the way -- in each of them, the defendant is guilty. In the first case, this changed the game’s goal from winning the case to strategically rescuing a hostage while making sure the guilty party receives justice. In the second case, it created a huge plot twist that set us up for more down the road. Either way, it’s nice to know that the defendants in this series aren’t always innocent third parties in need of a defense attorney. Even that might get boring after awhile.

And yeah, I definitely agree with you about that suit jacket. I’d probably take it back if I were you.

Divisiveness in Rage 2

What little promotional material there was for Rage 2 interested me. The idea of a nitro-fueled FPS surrounding an open world and a heavy power fantasy. I wasn’t expecting an enthralling story with deep and rich characters that would stitch me into the fabric of the world created. I was expecting a rip-roaring hail of bullets in the shape of a gun the likes of which I would ride across the map destroying everything that did so much as exhale in my presence. In short, that is what I got but it’s quite mixed. The “boots on the ground” combat, and I use that term lightly, is smooth as hell and lets you the player take on the various mobs and gangs of the wasteland in the way you want. The vehicular combat is more sparse and anecdotal in the sense that they are typically randomly occurring events as opposed to the convoy routes. The world itself is big but not Horizon Zero Dawn or Assassin’s Creed Odyssey “oh my god how did they even fit all this on one disc” big, it’s more than manageable. The biomes are varied and impressive in detail despite some being more vacant than I’d like. All in all, it’s at the very least better than the bland world of Rage 1, and at best it’s a gorgeous backdrop for the best FPS action since Doom 2016.

Anger Surrounds

There isn’t a lot in the way of introduction and it’s cause the game and it’s creators understand what you’re here for: shooty bang. You literally pick a gender and are handed a gun. After the first big firefight, the world is literally open to you. This exploration is encouraged because you don’t gain abilities or weapons unless you find Arks which are silos scattered around the map. Normally I’d be mad about another icon cluttering the map but it’s at least a way of getting stronger while discovering the hovels and holes your enemies hide in, grabbing some cash and feltrite (upgrade currency) along the way. It’s essentially the best version of the Far Cry towers ever.

The world is very pretty both graphically and from an art direction aspect. Boggy swamps, desert, rocky canyons, and even suburbia is sprinkled into the colorful and sometimes striking scenery of the world around you. Some structures are established like roadblocks, resource stations, or mutant nests, some are just dressing to fill out the world, but the best is the elaborate gang camps that go from close quarters combat to open courtyards that have you working with cover and elevation. Most main and side mission areas appear to be carefully designed to be engaging set pieces that vary from open lots littered with obstacles to break up the battlefield and enhance the functionality of some abilities. If the map itself doesn’t grab you, the way the world is designed to make combat as fun as possible definitely will.

Walker Wasteland Ranger tonight at 9

Rage 1 very much gave you the feeling of having your back against the wall. In Rage 2 if you ever find yourself in that situation you push off that wall and crush whatever is in your way into misy and gristle. You are the baddest thing breathing and everything in this game is about making you feel that. I can’t tell if the progression is deep or cleverly padded and that might be fine by me, I haven’t decided yet. When you first see how many currencies there are in the game it makes anyone that knows what AAA games have been doing lately sweat profusely. Fortunately, Rage 2 gives you plenty of opportunities to load up on the kind of cash you spend in stores, the kind on upgrades, weapon skins and mods, it's all here for you to take when you want it you just have to kill a bunch of baddies to get it. Thankfully there isn’t a single gun that doesn’t feel incredible and unique. From the way the rifle spits a volley or the kick from the shotgun; all of them are a dream and when used in tandem with the abilities it makes for very enticing gameplay. The abilities span all aspects of combat and their refresh time doesn’t allow them to be spammed but lets a player that bounces from skill to skill always have one refresh by the time the effect of the current one wears off. They really found a way for the guns to play into abilities and vice-versa which only makes spicing up combat easier. In Destiny when you throw a grenade, that’s it. Did you use your melee? Oh that’s cool but, that’s also it. In Rage 2 I can mix up abilities to create different means of destruction and death in a much more satisfying way. Even the more nuanced abilities like the Rush and Focus are used to bolster the minimal downtime firefights give you.

From McQueen to Mater

The sixteen vehicles are divisive stars of Rage 2 and it really shows, alongside the facelifted combat, that Id and Avalanche tried to not lose sight of what the original game was focussed around. This rendition’s vehicular combat is much better with weighty pit maneuvers and pretty smart auto tracking from turrets. Alongside this, the vehicles simply must be redone Mad Max vehicles Avalanche never got to use or something cause they just work in a way Bethesda hasn’t been able to claim in a long time. The Phoenix, your signature ride, is the best of both worlds with it being quick and tanky with a litany of additions you can make to it. You’ll see vehicles that have no weapons (why would you even), some speedsters that drop nuke mines behind them, a tank that is slower than frozen shit but also practically indestructible and armed to the teeth. There is fast travel but there is also the Icarus which is a hoverbike and though it can handle like a shopping cart with one wing (more on that later). When it does work its nice to get to where you’re going quicker meanwhile not missing out on any points of interest along the way to where you’re going. Vehicular combat is serviceable and engaging once you get the controls under your fingers.

rAGED

I don’t have too many issues with this game, some are typical nitpicks but others are definitely more egregious. The world though colorful and varied is very “basic open world game” format, I was kind of hoping for some kind of expansion on a version of game we are wildly overly saturated with. The mini games like MobTV and races (which make a comeback from the original) are great but the typical icon littered map is a little draining at times. Which brings me to the endgame because with consideration of just how last gen this game seems to be design wise, I fear they didn’t think about something as “modern” as having an endgame model outside of the season pass and totally unnecessary “live service” content drops. I feel like they missed their own mark and could’ve really populated the world with quite a few more enemies but instead, there are a lot of times where it’s actually quite isolated even in some intriguing areas.

Oh, and every situation that yields dialogue in the open world is wildly repetitive like the writers could not be fucked to give the character anything more than the one decent line you get to hear when approaching a mutant nest, gas station, or bandit hideout or the mobile trader oh my god it’s absolutely torturous especially when you don’t feel like returning to a town and they typically come around fairly consistently.

Back to the Icarus flying bike thing. Mother Fuck that thing can be absolutely unbearable. You see the right trigger merely starts the engines with minor altitude control, the left trigger lowers yourself. The vehicle is supposed to identify altitude and the height of oncoming structures and mountain faces on its own and adjust automatically. But it doesn’t and you’re often sitting there like a fucking idiot ramming into every mountain and building you come across. Why didn’t they map an ascend and descend control to the face buttons? How did no one catch how lopsided that thing controls?

Let’s continue to discuss vehicles, shall we? I talked about the good of the actual combat and the weapons it comes with. What I didn’t talk about was how the controls for said vehicles go from tight and responsive to sludgey and “too fast for the game”. It’s like the vehicle is going too fast for your controller. So many times I’ve gone sailing over the cliffside curve or undercutting and completely killing my momentum. The margin for error is really thin.

The progression system for weapons is...suspect. On the surface, it’s deep, you unlock tiers of upgrades with feltrite and then use upgrade/mod tokens to select the actual mod itself. It seems really unnecessary to have to purchase the ability to spend your tokens to upgrade your weapon. Just typing that made my brain fuzzy, it’s too many steps. At least with the skills each tier in itself comes with a boost to that specific skill but with weapons, you’re literally just adding steps for now real reason. Thankfully there’s no connection to monetization or anything like that. What it does have though is a premium currency for weapon skins which....whoopie...but thankfully that really is the extent of it. Not that it’s okay at all.

Conclusion

People are gonna compare this game to Far Cry New Dawn and I don’t believe many should give too much thought to that comparison. Outside of the bright post-apocalyptic setting (an aesthetic Rage 2 established first for the record), I feel like Rage 2 is more consistent in what it sets out to deliver. Not to mention the combat is just head and shoulders better in Rage 2 and if you go in knowing you won’t leave with a story that changed your life or even really impact you at all but instead expect a white knuckle shooter designed to keep you on your toes and keep the kill count increasing. This game is fun and once this goes on sale there will literally be no excuse.

tl;dr I give Rage 2 an 7 but I can’t stress this enough this is one of the best First Person Shooters I’ve ever played from a mechanics standpoint. The game appears to be this good despite the rest of the game design and execution.
