Planning a trip to Hershey Park
Thinking of going to Hershey Park? Especially if you live in the New England area, Hershey Park is lots of fun and takes less of a hit on your bank account than a lot of other places. We spent four days (day four was for sleeping in then driving back home) and three nights in Hershey, PA which could have definitely been condensed but we still had the best time together.
Day One: We live in CT, so Hershey is about a four-hour drive. One thing I always like to do no matter how long the drive, is to pack a cooler of drinks and snacks to have on the road especially if there's traffic. (Sorry! Don't want to jinx your trip!) We drove straight through but I'm sure there are plenty of fun places to stop on the way if you'd like. About 15 minutes away from Hershey is a place called Indian Echo Caverns. They are open typically everyday 10 a - 4 p and their prices are $22 for adults and $13 for kids. More specific information is on their website,
indianechocaverns.com
When you get there, they will give you a time slot for a tour of the caverns which is about 45 minutes long. Other than the caverns, they have a playground for kids and animals you can feed like goats, chickens, and peacocks. They do have restrooms located near the parking lot, make sure to go before walking down the many steps to get to the cavern. The tour guide was wonderful, and our 5-year-old was amazed. It is a unique experience and especially if you go in the summer, the cavern is 52 degrees all year long!
We stayed at the Inn at Chocolate Ave. It was a great location local to everything. The room was great and there was a complimentary hot breakfast every morning which is always a benefit. The only critique was there is no elevator to carry all your luggage if you are not on the first floor. Otherwise, a super affordable hotel that is nearby to all the hot spots.
For dinner, we went to The Chocolatier Restaurant which is right next to the Hershey Park entrance. Every single item on the menu is made with some kind of chocolate. Vincent got chicken and waffles. Emery got the kids chicken strips and macaroni and cheese. And I got the Reese's hamburger! I know what you're thinking, Ava that sounds disgusting. But it was so good. It was a beef patty with toasted peanuts, shallot jam, and cocoa spiced sweet potato straws. For dessert (we had to get dessert, we're in Hershey duh!), we got the Reese's milkshake and the pinwheel cake. The Reese's milkshake was absolutely disgusting. It tasted like you put a straw directly in peanut butter, like there was no milk or ice cream but the Reese's Pie and chocolate covered pretzel on top was good. The pinwheel cake was very sweet but so fun.
Day Two: This was our Hershey Park day! We went the end of May, so park hours were shorter than normal. We went from open to close. 11 am - 7 pm. Before the park, we went to Waffle House because when there is one nearby, we have to go! (They are not in CT if you couldn't tell!) Hershey Park was packed at opening. We bought our tickets online which is the way to go because who wants to wait in line to buy a ticket and then another line to enter the park. The park maps are all online. The kid rides are all throughout the park instead of just one area which has its pros and cons. The waterpark was not open when we went (before Memorial Day) but it is included in admission and looked like lots of fun. The Zoo is also included in admission and was the perfect size for young kids and adults too! Our favorite animal was the brown bear and black bear. As far as food, I should have planned it better. We just went to the least crowded area and got hot dogs to hold us over. After we left the park, we went to Cocoa Diner down the road and if you know me, you know I LOVE diners. They have so much variety, it's almost ALWAYS good and the staff and customers are always so sweet. This was no exception. One of the best things I did do however was order these family t-shirts from the Etsy shop "ZsCuteCreations". We got so many compliments on them, and I love supporting a fellow small business!
Day Three: This day was for the random odds and ends that we all wanted to do. First up, was Hershey's Chocolate World. This is free to enter that has a gigantic store of anything Hershey related you could possibly want. There is a free ride that you can go on that is like a tour of the factory and you learn about how chocolate is made. The ride takes your picture which you can purchase later. (We did, it was affordable and super cute that you could put your photo on a chocolate bar wrapper) At the end, you even get a free chocolate. Other things you can do here (for an additional cost) is a 4D movie, chocolate tasting, make your own candy bar, a trolley ride, and stuff a giant Reese's cup! There is also a small food court in which they had a milkshake spot. Vincent was hesitant because of the one we had the other day, but I love milkshakes and they have a dark chocolate/raspberry Kit Kat one and it was probably the BEST milkshake I've ever had. He regrated not getting his own after he tried it.
For lunch, Vincent had heard about Shady Maple Smorgasbord in East Earl, PA. This was an all you can eat buffet for $23 (adult). He loves any buffet because he can eat all the meat, he wants for one price! (he always thinks its taking advantage because he eats so much meat!) This drive was about 45 minutes away but we made it worth our while because the buffet has a gigantic store below it and they had a train museum nearby that was a lot of fun.
The last place we went to was Hershey Adventure Sports. This place was Emery's favorite. They had an arcade, batting cages, mini golf, go karts, bumper boats, escape rooms, etc! We had an absolute blast, and it was the best way to pass some downtime.
I hope this information helped you plan your trip, or you just enjoyed reading! Looking forward to our next trip.

America is Beautiful
Below is photo-narrative of a recent holiday. A round-trip land excursion totaling 3,000 miles over 13 days.
When driving, your more engaged and take your time, a better sense of the expanse of land, narrowness of each town, differing weather and nature.. Deliberate avoidance of large cities; utilizing only their joint to other roads. Dots on my map but not stops.
Put Paris, Barcelona, Hong Kong, et al on hold. American is rich in history, community and beauty.
Attempt this route in the fall and attempt to beat cold weather. Cold sets in mid October, luck held and this trip can parallel Indian Summer, an unseasonably warm period.
Enjoy.
Nestled in the West Stock Bridge, MA is the Norman Rockwell museum. The studio and home of this most famous illustrator. Western Massachusetts, is very quaint and this town’s population about 1,300. The museum grounds have lovely walking paths through the property and the artwork lines the gallery walls with and up and downstairs floors. Its design exceed expectations for those with disabilities.
Other artists and genres are on rotating exhibit, Sesame Street on this particular visit. Standard exhibits like Saturday Evening Post Illustrative covers are just thrilling, 100′s organized by year and cram the walls. Its easy to enjoy the main galleries, but take time to see the studio in the back grounds and to stroll the river trail dotted with modern metal sculptures.
You can reach this charming gem from metro Boston in under two hours and easily reach New York state through-way to continue your travel. Note, in the fall season the town hosts a lovely Harvest Fair and allow time to walk the turn of the century style main street.
The cost is a sliding admission fee. Adults $20, Students $10 and Seniors $17 and Veterans $17. Members are FREE.
If you’re looking to continue on west, next stop is Amish Country in Lancaster, PA.
From West Stockbridge, MA its a bit of a jaunt to Lancaster Country and Amish Country. Lancaster is the the first of two stops visiting Amish communities. Allow 5-6 hours, so leave early in the day. Lancaster is unique. Various historical/cultural tours are available. Some are closed on Sundays, keep this in mind. The Amish Experience Tour Agency offer packaged deals. I enjoyed the re-modeled school house and living quarters and the 14 passenger bus ride through the Amish land, passing meticulously kept farms, sampling “shoo fly pie” and rich discussion of Amish life. I did not take the horse and buggy tour, but ample options are available. Small negative, Lancaster is a bit commercialized in the center. And in fact, the community has its own bank. Educated only to the 8th grade, math and business skills are well utilized. Amish are particularly successful in business.
Continuing on Berlin, OH also in Amish Country is the next suggested stop. However, if your heading to Ohio, you might as well enjoy Hershey PA.
Its a good idea to squeeze in a trip to Hershey, PA, about a half hoiur from Lancaster and on the path to Berlin, Oh. The story of this City is a gem, both US history and capitalism gone right. One learns about the business founder and philanthropist Milton Hershey and chocolate! Milton, a businessman who failed many times before achieving great success with affordable yummy candy bar. Visitors can visit Chocolate World for free and take the free Disney like tour and get free chocolate bar. The factory no longer gives tours and the town no longer smells of chocolate.
You can also take a trolley tour through Hershey its well worth the $16 adult ticket price and more free chocolate. Tour guides are very experienced and tales of the town built by Milton! The facility is a huge shopping mall so you can stock up on branded souvenirs or participate in other paid activities like build a chocolate bar, a bit pricey at $26 dollars each.
On toward Berlin, one takes the Pennsylvania Turnpike. It is long and a bit pricey to the tune $18 dollars. Note, Beaver River and Raccoon Creek are near the highway so anticipate significant road kill. I lost count after twenty. Its not a happy thought at all.
On arriving in Berlin, Ohio, the second Amish Country stop I am treated to the Harvest moon and I try to snap an amateur photo. Berlin has a differing feel than Lancaster. There is a local wholesome Amish dinner theater, you can purchase tickets online of visit the ticket office. A small ensemble of actors deliver humorous slap-stick that involves the audience and the music is simply fun. Especially, Amish-parody of pop singers. You can sample local dinner food and walk the shops. There is a local post office in the main street if you’re thinking its time to mail postcards, quilt and leather shops. Plenty of hitches of buggies. Buggy horses are athletic, most purchased from Kentucky breeding farms.
Do squeeze in time to sample local breads and cheeses, The store as easy to with an area map, but watch out for the horse drawn buggies, the horses are athletic.
Next stop was suppose to be Indiana.
Exiting Berlin your in for a treat expansive farmlands. Fields of corn or soy and the occasional lumber farm for miles.
All trips have delays and missteps. The original plan involved an overnight near the Indianapolis Speedway, but the airshow was cancelled and, well, that is how it goes. The trip to Springfield , IL will be long.
Diner food is great, but wears on the traveler a week in. Its a full days ride to the next stop Springfield, IL. Lincoln’s home town and the State Capitol. Indiana is between Ohio and Illinois and that is about 5 hour stretch. Fortunately or cleverly, a huge highway bill board sign reads “Beef House”, “Next Exit!” Serving beef you can eat a late lunch or early dinner. They serve a fantastic early bird special with full salad bar. Yum, yum and Great Service. Actually, best meal so far! I stuffed the bread and leftovers to go.
Outside you can take a nice selfie with the Bull. If your Vegan or Vegetarian you can get all you need to eat too. Compared to East Coast pricing this is a $$ deal! Onward to Springfield.
Arriving late day I review the available area maps and plan for the next day. Downtown has the Lincoln Home and neighborhood. The ranger guided tour though Lincoln’s home is free, but you need to get a timed ticket in the visitor center. You can self guide the small restored neighborhood and see the continue historical film that runs in the visitor’s center. On site parking is paid, but very modest and if you like to walk you can easily visit the surrounding free sites: The Original State Capital, The Lincoln Depot (my favorite) and Lincolns Law offices. All are simply great. The Presidential Museum is not free, but worth its ticket price. About a mile or two from the main tourist area is Lincoln’s final resting place and well worth the drive. There is other tour options should you not have a car nor wish to walk. Most hotels have maps and the tourist center near the Old Capitol Building does too.
On a side street in the restored neighborhood enjoy local feel good dishes or a Ghost Tour and scribble your name on the chalk board! I had the mushroom cheese burger, yum. In the evening local theater is nearby to catch a movie! You can easily your interests in two days.
Next stop is Kentucky....
Off to an early start again and time for the big U-turn back. Head towards Kentucky’s capital Frankfort, a hidden American gem and well along the process of renovating its downtown and its historical treasures. The state known for horse racing and breeding is this well worth the stop. Kentucky’s landscape is rolling; the farms expansive. Apparently, Johnny Depp resided part of his youth in Frankfort and was born in KY!
A variety of Company’s offer morning tours take tourists to Keeneland Race track and near by breeding stables. You get to meet famous retired race horse Curland, see resting place of Seattle Slew and all the inner workings of the race track including lessons from the local “Betologist”. A second day can be spent visiting Buffalo Trace Distillery with tastings for modest cost or take the free trolley tour through Frankfort with a knowledgeable guide. The Trolley Guide was so friendly and knew everything about Frankfort! Carve our time for Buddy’s Pizza and a trip to Hoggy’s for a scoop of ice cream.
Next stop on the list is West Virginia, find time for nature walk. It’s a nice option before more time in the car. Buckley Wildlife Sanctuary will take you a half hour off the path but the tranquil 1 mile walk is well worth it.
Under-crowded this reserve has a number of marked trails, so its tough to get lost and the trails are modest or not hard. Do pay attention, the maintenance paths seem like they are part of the trail. Mostly, you enjoy nature and will here a wide variety of birds in the woods.
Curlin
Resting place of Seattle Slew
Every Trip has a road which can be a challenge. That road is Route 219 leading to Marlington West Virginia from Frankfort, KY. . Its paved well, but winding and rolling along the way for miles and miles 9-12% grades. If your seeking to be off the grid Marlington is the place. There no cell coverage, so you will need a satellite GPS and rely on internet when you reach it or bring a printed map. This is hunting and ski country, population about 1,000.
The small town has wonderful local restaurants in the main town, a home depot store, museum and civil war cemetery (small admission fees). The big attraction is in near by Cass, WV pop 52 and home to the historical Cass Railroad and Green Bank Telescope. Both offer tours, I missed the radio telescope tour, bummer, tour hours are limited but did see it from the road. It is the worlds larger radio telescope and supposedly the reason behind the cell phone black out.
But, but, I did visit the Cass Railroad State Park and took the open train ride and ride to the top Bald Knob, elevation 4843 feet. Knowledgeable local guides share the rich history of foresting and the railroad, the trains and its rescue after the collapse of logging. You will learn much about engines, whistle blow language, switch backs and loggers. You need a full half day for this tour, a a picnic lunch is provided with your ticket. There is a small museum and general store. Toot toot, goes the whistle. Do not miss it.
Give yourself three nights the ride in and out is a bit tiring. The next stop would be West Point.
This is a long haul, because I wanted to stay true to remaining rural, thus avoided stops in Philadelphia, NYC,etc.
Arriving late by error, the sun was setting and my travel service Exepedia pointed me to lodging that was really too far from West Point. I stayed in Kingston and was a bit disappointed although the local diner did make up for this disappointment or misstep.
If visiting West Point, you are going to need identification to pick up or purchase tickets at the main visitor center. Since this is a Federal Facility plan on bringing a real ID or passport as the ID laws change in 2020. For now, driver’s license is adequate.
Tours run routinely each day. There are a few days it is closed from the public. The army cadets live on base so that is really cool. There is a bus campus and cemetery tour combo package. Both involve walking, wear good shoes. You can pick only the bus tour, far less walking.
Enjoy the history of the founding and the site’s role in the Revolutionary War. Learn about all the famous generals and enjoy the majestic architecture feats, sports stadium for Army-Navy games, memorials and lore of those you made the ultimate sacrifice. Walk the cemetery and learn all the famous people buried and there stories and who can be choose this as their final resting place George Armstrong Custer is buried there! . The scenery is beyond beautiful.
There is a free museum to walk while you wait for your tour. The exhibits and film is fantastic. And a small down town to grab a snack, with a McDonalds and Dunkin Donuts. And plenty of branded sovereigns in the huge gift shop.
A special thank you to my driver and life long buddy Andrew.....

NEW YORK
23 Sep 2017 (Fri) – Wow! It has been some time since I posted to this blog. It’s surprising how easy it is to fall out of the habit of regular postings. I will try to remedy that.
We met our friends, Tom & Sandy from Arkansas, for a delightful trip into New York City. They were coming to New York to visit one of Tom’s friends as well as his granddaughter. We met them at Battery Park and rode the ferry to Ellis Island. It is amazing how the museum has grown. The story the museum tells of 12 million immigrants who passed through the Island during a 21-year period is awesome. Everyone should see this place – especially if your ancestors came through there.
There was also the most interesting carousel in the park. It is supposed to be something like experiencing what it is like to be in a school of fish under the water. I had to ride it! What fun. We also had a couple of guys serenade us on the subway. They were panning for money but were pretty good.
We also drove to the annual RV show in Hershey, PA, on September 14. It was fun to see all the new models and explore the innovations that are out this year.
We have set our plans to get back on the road. Hoping to depart New York on Tuesday, September 26 at O-dark-thirty (our favorite time of day to escape Long Island).
7 Sep 2017 (Thu) – The oncologist’s visit this morning went well. The PET scan showed very low grade lymphoma. The doctor says no treatment is necessary at this time and told me to come back in three months. Paul and I immediately began looking at what we have scheduled during the week and contemplating when we can get back on the road.
We went to Port Jefferson for lunch and ate at Danfords, a high-end historical resort sitting right in the port. The meal was expensive but enjoyable. We sat out on the deck and watched the ferry to Connecticut come and go. After lunch, we walked around the port soaking in the warm sun, feeling the soft breeze blowing in from the sound, and listening to the seabirds call out to each other. There was a large building that used to be a machine shop for a shipbuilder back in the early 1900s. It is now a community center. There was an art show going on and we walked down the aisle admiring the talents of many artists.
We then left the port and drove to the surgeon’s office where he did a quick check on my side. Everything was fine. We now will be making our plans to leave as soon as we can.
4 Sep 2017 (Sat) - The desk is done! And a gorgeous piece of furniture it is, too. Paul matched it to the cabinetry in the RV so it looks built in. He’s such a talented guy.
Today is our 46th anniversary. Sometimes, it seems like just yesterday that we got married. Other times, it seems like we’ve always been together. Got a few more to go. We celebrated by going to a barbecue at Travis & Sam’s house. The boys were delightful and very energetic.
1 Sep 2017 (Fri) – Waaaaaaahhhhh! August is gone. It is so sad to see the waning days of summer. This coming weekend is the basic marker for the end of the season. I am sorry to see summer go.
Not much has been going on this week. Paul has been busy building a custom desk for the RV. We have been spending some time watching the grandbabies and waiting for medical tests to be done. I had a PET scan today. They injected me with a radioactive isotope which “lights up” the cancer cells. They then lay the PET scan over the CT scan and see where the differences are. I am eager to talk to the doctor. It will be a long week until next Friday.
22 Aug 2017 (Tue) – We went to the lab at six this morning so Paul could get a blood test. Then we drove to the Bay Shore Marina. Our plan had been to watch the sun rise but the sky was clouded. The sky just got lighter but there was no sun to look at. We walked along the boardwalk, explored Nicky’s on the Bay (a summertime restaurant that has grown significantly over the years), admired all the boats moored at the docks, and disturbed the geese wandering around the area.
At 11:30 a.m. we went to the oncologist. He told me that I have a low grade lymphoma. It is so low grade, in fact, that they don’t even treat it. Doctors look on it just like other diseases – high blood pressure, cholesterol, etc. – and just monitor its progress. He gave me a script for a PET scan and took more blood. The pathologist is also doing a DNA/genetic study of the biopsy for further diagnosis. If I have to have periodic testing (i.e., bloodwork) then I could do that anywhere. There is no reason for us to come off the road. I could get the tests and have the results sent back here to New York. Hopefully, we can be on the road by the end of September. Keep your fingers crossed.
21 Aug 2017 (Mon) – Paul had an appointment with the doctor this morning to get the results of the carotid artery sonogram that was done two weeks ago. He has a small amount of plaque in his arteries and has to be monitored on a regular basis but, otherwise, Paul is just fine.
We then drove to my surgeon’s office where he removed the drain in my side. Dr. Craig was on the way to Montauk for a week-long vacation with his family and came in especially to see me (dressed in shorts and a t-shirt).
Next stop was to pick up Peter at our cousin, Lee’s, house. Peter needed a ride to the airport. We stopped at Panera Bread for lunch then dropped him off at Islip MacArthur Airport. He will be in the air during the solar eclipse.
Paul and I drove to Melville to the Canon service center to get my Sureshot camera fixed. There was a gate guard who took down our license plate number and noted Paul’s driver license information. He then called for an escort to bring us to the service center (this IS a camera company, right?). A bunch of employees were standing around outside the large office building watching the solar eclipse.
Inside, the service agent informed us that Canon does not repair the cameras. She took the broken one back and told us that Canon will replace it with a new one at a reduced cost. We paid about $300 for the new camera when we bought it 3 or 4 years ago. Today, I paid $79 (plus fees) for a new one. That was a pretty good deal.
18 Aug 2017 (Fri) – We left Indian Island Campground at 10 a.m. It poured most of the way home. Remarkably, it stopped raining a mile from the house. We were able to get the RV backed into the yard without getting soaked. When we opened the slides, I found that the floor had gotten wet. It looked like water had pushed up through the bottom of the slide. We drove through some pretty deep puddles on the way home and our new RV appears to NOT be well sealed. Ugh!
After set up and lunch, we drove to Amityville to find a camera shop to get my camera repaired. The one shop Paul was looking for was no longer there. The other shop does not do camera repairs. That trip was a bust. We then stopped at Bed, Bath & Beyond to buy a gift certificate then at Best Buy to buy a new mouse for the computer. Somehow, the mouse we had broke. While at Best Buy, we also bought a movie making program. We are still trying to make videos of our travels and looking for a program that is easy to use. I think this makes the third or fourth program we are trying. I’m so bummed that Microsoft removed Movie Maker when it upgraded its software. That was a great program.
17 Aug 2017 (Thu) – The computer was down for several days. I brought it to Best Buy where they cleared out viruses and malware and installed upgrades and updates.
Things have been humming along. I had a biopsy done on Monday, the 14th, where the surgeon removed a couple of lymph nodes. We won’t know for sure until I see the oncologist next Tuesday, but he thinks I have a low grade lymphoma. It looks like the kind they don’t even treat; just watch it. That means periodic testing and bloodwork but, hopefully, it won’t interfere too much with our travels around the country.
We spent five nights at Indian Island Campground out in Riverhead with the Long Islanders. Friends of ours from church (Jan & Ed) invited us to join the group for a campout. It was quite enjoyable and the weather was good for most of the time we were there.
5 Aug 2017 (Sat) – We watched Caiden for most of the day. After lunch, we went to the library. Caiden played for about an hour. Next, we drove to the East Islip Marina and had a snack at the Bayside Clam Bar. We tried to walk along the dockside but there was goose poop everywhere. Yuck!
Later we went over Travis’ house and enjoyed dinner with him and the boys. Paul gave Noah the posters he had gotten from his father when he was a boy. They were pictures of the early space rockets – the Atlas and Titan rocketships.
4 Aug 2017 (Fri) – Paul is watering the sidewalk several times a day. It takes 21 days for concrete to cure and it needs to be kept moist. It just looks very funny. At 2 p.m. we checked in at Zilkha Radiology for Paul’s carotid duplex ultrasound. After sitting for over an hour, it looked like the nurse had inadvertently skipped him. She tried to tell us the technician was stuck on someone who needed extra help but you could tell she was lying. We rescheduled the appointment for Monday and left.
I dropped Paul off at home and I went for physical therapy. Cosmo (yes, that really is his name) explained in great detail how the muscles, tendons, bursa, and bones all connect and interact. He did some measuring and evaluating then had me do a few exercises followed by ice. I scheduled three more appointments next week.
