It’s no secret locally, that the Capian bar is one of the trendiest in Marseille, and a huge favourite among cocktail enthusiasts. This bar has it all! An elegant décor, a superb terrace, a view of the Vieux-Port, the protection of Notre-Dame de la Garde and to cap it all, a head bartender, Xavier Gilly, national and international award winner.. The pool is perfectly secluded, protected from public view and from the sun’s rays, with water at 28°C, in an infinitely peaceful setting. The decor is reminiscent of the fountains and lavoirs (communal clothes-washing places) of traditional Provence. The decor draws its inspiration from the Palais Longchamp, built to celebrate the arrival of water in the city of Marseille in the 19th century. The pool is enclosed on one side by a stone wall down which water gently cascades into the pool, providing a charming, pleasant backdrop. The lighting, both subtle and discreet, with a mix of warm and cool tones, evokes the changing luminosity of the city and reinforces the sense of peace.

Nice, day 1, part 1
I took the train from Marseille to Nice and arrived a bit before lunchtime. After dropping my luggage off at the aforementioned former Nazi hotel, I took the tram to the Place Garibaldi, a very photogenic square that also happens to be the closest tram stop to MAMAC, Nice's museum of modern and contemporary art.
MAMAC was a relatively small museum whose pride of place is, I gather, its Yves Klein collection. But I found a few other things I liked.
Quite possibly the best part of MAMAC is its rooftop terrace. The building is shaped like a hollow square, with four wings containing the galleries connected by long hallways, and a courtyard at the center. The rooftop terrace goes along the perimeter of the building, affording a pretty view of the city.
If Roussillon's color is red, then Nice's color is yellow.

it was odd to see kourt nearly eloping. she wasn't sure this could be considered an actual elopement as she'd been called in from her little writer's retreat in the south of france to come and play maid of honor in prague, but it was close enough. nini had never thought her best friend and ricky's best friend would hook up like this. getting together when they'd only ever really been friends because of who their friends were? but, then, the heart wanted what it wanted, right? that was what had led her to brody walker, after all... okay, maybe it wasn't her heart making the calls on that one. her brain had made the case that she needed to move on, and quickly, and he'd been persistent.
❝ they're certainly making this an exciting summer, i guess. i needed to get the hell out of la after the last few months. after the court case... didn't really want to stay and be the source of people's gossip, you know? ❞ brody had sued her for defamation after a demo had ❛ leaked ❜ and he didn't like that she'd referred to him in a not-so-flattering way. of course, his case had been swiftly dismissed but the court of public opinion held a much different view of her now. as if she were the one cheating or being a manipulative douchebag.
❝ i've missed you, too, ricky. ❞ she tells him, her arms wrapped around him so nicely, so familiar as she breathes in his scent and lets herself get lost in the memories that flood through her mind. she really had missed him. they'd been busy chasing careers and making names for themselves and then she'd gotten with brody, and he'd told her it was him or ricky, and she'd just wanted to be happy again, so... she'd let him control so much of her life for those eight months. and he'd left her in shambles.
she looked cute today, dressed in a little pale pink sundress with daisies all over it, but she felt so exhausted after all the traveling she'd done. there were only two flights out of marseille to prague a week and she'd managed to miss both when booking travel, so she'd just spent fourteen hours on a train, and she wanted nothing more than to sprawl out on a bed and take a nap. and maybe indulge in a long, hot shower. ❝ ahh, so, i was actually in france. couldn't get a flight. i've been on a train for hours. ready to get into my hotel room and decompress. what about you? how was yours? i hope better than mine. ❞
❝ i still need to check in, but i am so excited to crack open a bottle of wine and relax before whatever festivities kourt has planned for tomorrow. ❞ she says, shaking her head. she just knows her best friend has their entire week planned before her upcoming nuptials. she smiles, turning toward reception and instinctively grabs his hand as she starts to walk toward the check-in counter. it was so second nature to pull him right along with her, even if she hadn't seen him in nearly a year. he was still her best friend, right?
❝ i'd love to get lunch with you. we have a lot to talk about, don't we? ❞ she says with a soft laugh. ❝ i, uh... i heard the song. thank you, by the way. i mean... it's obvious. ❞ blush stains her cheeks as she speaks, wondering if she should even be talking about the song. maybe it would have been better to let it go that she had heard it, that she loved it, that it had meant the world to her. and, maybe she was scared that he wouldn't be happy about her little instagram rant...
when big red told him he was getting married... suffice it to say ricky was caught extremely off guard. when had this happened? honestly even big red's europe trip had surprised him a lot. but then again, the italian culinary expedition trip he signed up for sparking his fancy made sense. even if big red always seemed more than satisfied back at slices. ricky's pretty sure though that red's yet to set foot in france- not after the whole antoine thing. good for big red though, seeing the world, and apparently finding love? ricky has yet to find someone else he could honestly say he was in love with. not that he hasn't tried here and there in the last four years since nini... to limited success... but he's tried.
nini salazar-roberts, the love of his life... his childhood best friend, the one person who truly seemed to understand him. creatively, he'd found his niche fairly quickly. after a night out in his first few weeks in los angeles after graduation led him to meeting just the right person, ricky found himself working with a music producer. writing songs and being able to let them get out in the world was a really beautiful thing. learning to produce and have even more control over his work, it felt even better. and sure, a lot of his work no one knows is his, who's looking at the writers and producers on a track besides the artist's name, but he loves creating. and well- there's nothing ricky bowen does so well as a love song. writing about love, pain, loss, it's cathartic- and people resonate with it because it's so genuine and real. he knows the somewhat success he's found isn't what most people are striving for in the industry- but being able to go to new york and la and play shows for a few hundred people and having the crowd singing the words he wrote back to him, it's fulfilling. just the music is enough. and his recent lead single charting admittedly felt pretty incredible- even if he knows everyone thinks it's for heather.
nini was also probably the only person who'd understand how absolutely bizarre it was that their best friends were getting married. kourtney and big red? there were times kourtney barely tolerated being friends with ricky's best friend. it's honestly a little shocking they were even dating let alone engaged. but one thing that couldn't be a shock is seeing nini in this hotel lobby this afternoon. kourtney's best friend. the obvious maid of honor to his own role as best man. he hasn't talked to her in about a year. deep down he kind of knew it was her controlling boyfriend, even though she never said it in so many words. they spent hours talking for a while, then things trickled away and he knew something was off. and then he saw her with brody walker. her lack of communication made sense. he kinda thought about texting, or even calling her up, when he saw that she was pretty obviously single. but he also kind of knew that since she was the one to cut contact, it might be smarter to let her be the one to initiate it, lest she had his number blocked or something. so they haven't spoken in like a year now- though he's pretty confident she's heard the song... he's not going to let this be awkward.
❝ hey neens! ❞ said with a bright grin as he walks over to her, wrapping her up in a hug without taking a moment to question if that might make her uncomfortable after so long. ❝ definitely weird... never saw this coming- but hey, i'm happy if they're happy right? and uh- good excuse to see you too. i've missed you, nini. ❞ maybe a bit candid for his first conversation with his ex girlfriend in a year- but she's not just an ex. she was his best friend for years. he doesn't want to be awkward- he just wants to be her friend again. he has a feeling they can likely pick up where they left off.
❝ but uh- how was your flight? did you get checked in here yet? the place seems pretty busy but i couldn't help but want to pop back down here to check out the restaurant, maybe once we do get your room handled i could buy you some lunch? ❞ head tilts aside with a curious expression.

My One And Only - Chapter 9
Previous | Next
So this chapter is longer than chapter 8 and I think from next chapter, they got longer. As we get closer to the chapter I’m currently writing, the frequent updates will unfortunately die. Just letting you know so you won’t be too disappointed! Oh and my Wattpad name is the same, ‘yannowhatigiveup’. If you know any way I can improve my writing please do tell me!
Gabriel Agreste stood in his observatory after recently detransforming. 'She can control her emotions well but when she's angry, it's incredibly strong. This girl could be one of the strongest in Paris, she could be one that senses auras. I must find a way. I will use her to eliminate all of heroes. All I need is time'.
————————————————————
The bluenette sat in her uncle Jagged's hotel room, tapping a pen against her lips while watching the conversation, well it was more like an argument, between Jagged and his manager Bob Roth. Bob was stating that they should leave the song writing to the professionals while Jagged protested, saying that his niece was overflowing with talent and that she could do it no problem. Penny was on the phone with someone but Marinette didn't eavesdrop in her conversation. She stated at the blank notebook in front of her, eyeing it suspiciously. Then she got an idea and began scribbling down the lyrics she had in mind, not knowing that she had unintentionally gained the attention of everyone in the room. She managed to write the whole song in one sitting which was very impressive even for professional song writers at the time. "Did it" she said putting the pen down. Penny then came over to take the notebook and read what the bluenette had written. 'I hope it's ok'
"Wow Mari, this is great!" Penny said her mouth agape. She passed it to Jagged but Bob had snatched it out of his hands, only to give it back when Fang looked at him hungrily.
"Yeah, this is rock'n roll Nettie!" He praised her while giving his manager a 'I told you so' look.
"Yes this is exactly what we needed, a little change in the album. Thank you for this Marinette. We shall produce the song while you can sing the lyrics-"
"If that's alright will you of course" Jagged said, interrupting his manager.
Marinette nodded hesitantly. "I can give it a shot" she murmured.
Marinette walked home after visiting Jagged and showing Damian the designs she had in plan for his brothers, without showing the design she made for him. She was careful not to shake her purse too much as Tikki was sleeping, it was a busy day for the kwami as Marinette had let her go visit Plagg for some 'Kwami business'. Marinette didn't press for answers though. Soon she entered her parents bakery to find them already there, waiting for her.
"Maman, Papa what is it?" She asked.
"Your father and I are discussing if we should open a second bakery" Sabine answered enthusiastically.
"There's a few spots available in Marseille, we already booked a flight and a hotel to stay at" Tom answered, maybe even more excited than his wife.
"That's great! But isn't Marseille far away? It's closer to Italy than Paris" Marinette answered.
"Well surprisingly, we're already well known there" Tom replied.
"Oh cool! When will you be leaving?"
"On Saturday at 2 am" Her mother replied. "It's late but it was the next available flight. We'll be gone for a week maybe longer depending on all the paper work"
"Well you better start packing then!" Marinette said happy for both her parents. "I'll be going to bed now. Good night!" She hugged both her parents before going upstairs to change and finishing up her designs.

Adrien sat in front of his computer early before school, looking through all of Kagami's recent posts and he liked the photo that she posted yesterday, the photo was of when they went for ice cream earlier today. Alya and Nino were also in the picture, smiling for the camera but Adrien noticed someone else in the background. 'Marinette...' She was eating her ice cream, unbeknownst to the picture being taken, with the spoon still in her mouth. Adrien felt distracted by the way the sun reflected off her hair. He loved Kagami truly but his new love for Marinette shadowed it. "Plagg" Adrien said. "I think I have a thing for bluenettes".
"So your type is blue-haired girls? What makes you say that?" The kwami replied, not really enjoying the conversation.
"Well I like Ladybug, Kagami and Marinette and they all have one thing in common. They all have blue hair" Adrien sighed. "The last thing I need is another blue-haired girl to come into my life"
"Ughhh this is too cheesy, I much prefer actual cheese" Plagg groaned while looking around for Camembert.
Adrien sighed, smiling while going back to think of the girls he liked. He liked Ladybug for her quick, sly and smart nature. Kagami was incredibly skilled and very easy to relate to. And Marinette had a kind personality as well as unmatchable beauty. He couldn't decide which one he liked most as all the options were as great as the others. Then a notification on his computer distracted him from his thoughts. It was a notification that Jagged Stone had posted something. 'Huh, I wonder what it could be'
~~~
Jason was flicking through the channels on the TV, looking for something interesting to watch when a notification appeared on his phone. 'What's this?' He then realised that it was a trending post from Jagged Stone and went to view it. "HOLY SH-"
"Master Jason, language"Alfred reminded him.
"Oh yeah sorry" he whispered before shouting again. "HOLY MOTHER OF UM SOMETHING!"
Dick and Tim then entered the room, wondering what Jason was talking about. "What?" Dick asked.
Jason then connected his phone to the TV and showed the post he was talking about.
@official_jaggedstone
(Photo of a blue-haired girl with a medium long braid and her back facing the camera, writing on something)
Wonder what MDC is writing up for the bonus track? 🤔🤔🤔🤔
All three of the boys then fanboyed over finally being able to see what their favourite designer, and idol, looked like. Alfred then sighed while exiting the room.
"She's pretty!"
"She looks smart!"
"What's she writing?"
"I'm gonna call Damian, that room looks similar to the room he's staying in"
"Yes do, I want to pester him"
Dick then dialed a number on his phone. After a few rings, the phone finally answered.
"Tt, Yes?" A stern voice came through on the other side.
"HAVE YOU SEEN JAGGED'S RECENT POST!?" Tim shouted into the microphone.
~~~
Damian had already seen Jagged's post, he smiled to himself. He was about to go back to reading his book when his phone rang. He would've picked it up straight away if he hadn't see the name, it was Dick. He let the phone ring for a little while before answering.
"Tt, Yes?" He said in a stern voice.
"HAVE YOU SEEN JAGGED'S RECENT POST!?" Luckily Damian had the phone further away from his ear otherwise Tim would've exploded his eardrums.
"What about it?"
"He posted an image of MDC, the very first one ever on the internet!" Dick answered excitedly. "There aren't any pictures of her anywhere".
Damian smiled to himself knowing that he had seen MDC before his brothers, he had seen her smile. "There aren't?"
"Yeah! Weird right? She doesn't even show up to Jagged's live performances!" It was Jason's turn to speak now.
"Well I'm sure she goes to the performances, she's just never seen" Tim told his brother in a matter-of-fact way.
Damian rolled his eyes. "Tt, bye now" he said, immediately turning his phone off not allowing any of his brothers to protest. He then texted Marinette.
Me: Just got off the phone with my brothers, they were fanboying over you.
Surprisingly Marinette replied straight away.
Angel: They are too? Everyone is fangirling over MDC
Me: Because of Jagged's post, he posted a picture of you. The back of your head specifically
Angel: Oh hah I see it now, I guess that has to be my signature hairstyle as MDC now.
Me: It looks great on you though
Angel: You really think so?
Me: Mhm
Angel: Aw, thanks
~~~
Marinette had blushed when Damian said she looked good in that hairstyle. She really liked him. Then Marinette looked at the time, she was early for once. She decided to make use of this and get ready for school. She had finished getting ready quickly and she was able to walk instead of run to school like she usually did. When she entered, she noticed that there was barely anyone here. 'Perfect! I can work on my designs' that was until a familiar face showed up.
"Hey girl! You're here early wow!" The sound of her best friend made Marinette laugh until her facial expression changed from surprised to smug. Marinette was about to ask but Alya had brought her to the locker room where they were alone. "So girl, spill"
"What?"
"Do you like Chat Noir?"
Marinette giggled but she saw her best friend's face. "Oh you're not joking"
"Nope, now you can tell me so that I can get you both on a date." She blushed profusely. "And I ain't backing down, I've spent too much time on trying to find out who he is. Don't think I haven't noticed how you're jumping at anytime to be with this boy." She said the last statement with a soft voice.
Marinette sighed, grateful of her best friend but hesitant to tell her without Damian's permission as he never seemed like one for social interaction. "I'll ask" she said while taking her phone out.
Me: Shaytan, my best friend found out that I've been sneaking off to go see you.
Shaytan: Césaire?
Me: Yeah
Shaytan: You said she wanted to be a reporter right? Well then I guess this is expected, she did a good job.
Me: So should I tell her your name?
Shaytan: That's up to you
Me: Ok thanks!
Marinette put her phone away and looked at her best friend.
"So?" Alya asked. "Can you tell me?"
Marinette nodded. "So um, his name is D-Damian"
V-Day in Madrid pt.2♥️✨
We had an hour between the time that we arrived at the hotel to when our room would be ready so we decided to go out and explore for that hour, making good use of our time by going shopping. The shopping experience in Europe vs the US is different in the sense that European retailers offer a wider range in their stores then what we are used to back home. The popular retailer Zara which roots come from Spain originating in the 1970's didn't just have a store the size that we are used to seeing in the malls. On Gran Via which is a major shopping area in Madrid had Zara stores that were at least four to five floors, with grand marble staircases and ceiling to floor length mirror that adorned the shops walls throughout giving customers the chance to view themselves in every inch of the store. It was simply Grand.
We also stopped at stores such Primark (which currently houses the largest location in Madrid) , H&M, Bershka, Sephora and smaller shops special to Madrid. An observation that I made from comparing these stores to the US versions is that in Europe their market is geared towards showcasing more of a tailored look with their many styles of blazers, skirts, coats & jackets, trousers and dresses while streetwear is also showcased it is on a smaller scale then in the US.
At the first Zara we visited I found this beautiful black dress with one long sleeved shoulder that would sure come in handy later on. The dress cost approximately 23 euro
Once we settled into our room around 2pm we decided to freshen up and enjoy the rest of the day that we had left and food was the first thing on our minds. We had a reservation at Villa Capri which is an Italian restaurant under the Big Mamma restaurant group that have eateries in cities such as Paris ,London and Marseille. From the moment we walked into the restaurant we understood the inspiration behind the aesthetic. It felt like we were on the Amalfi coast traveling on an opulent boat for a dinner party on the coast.
We had tried three of their cocktails on the menu and loved every single one but the favorite being the Mojitostar which is their rendition of a mojito and it was definitely one the best I have ever had. The other cocktails that we tried were the Big Mamma and the Sr y Sra Fizz which is the pink drink topped with marshmallows. We started off with the Croquestar which is a black truffle, ham and béchamel sauce fried croquette . Black Truffle is a very popular ingredient in Madrid that is also featured on their breakfast sandwiches at Starbucks. For our meal we had the Gnocchi ala Sorrentina which was served in a bread crater and the Mafaldine Al Tartfuo which was another truffle dish with mushrooms. I am not the biggest fan of mushrooms but the way that it was incorporated into the pasta was delicious and we would definitely recommend Villa Capri and Bel Mondo when traveling to Madrid . The service was also amazing as our Waitress was very kind and even asked if we preferred to communicate in Spanish or English.
The weather in Madrid for the four days that we were there was relatively sunny but the temperatures did range from 45 degrees in the morning, high 50's in the afternoons and low 30's in the evening. For our first outing I opted to wear an oversized cream sweater from PrettyLittleThing with a pair of jeans from PLT as well that are my favorite go to jeans at the moment. I chose to pair the outfit with my black chunky Chelsea boots that was also featured on my Fall & Winter clothing favorites. These boots were such a great investment and have been so good to me during the seasons. I topped it with a hat from PLT as well and as I am writing this I'm realizing that most of the clothing pieces, accessories and shoes that I wore from the trip were from PLT so I will try my best to link all of the items that are still available for purchase. Lastly I accessorized with my Canon powershot g7x and Kendrick Trunk bag in blush pink with silver hardware from Brandon Blackwood.
✨Cream Chunky Turtle Neck Oversized Sweater✨
✨Black PU Chelsea Ankle Boots✨
✨Black faux Fur Bucket Hat✨
✨Black Outlined Square Sunglasses✨
1834 August Wednesday 6th
I fear the enormity of this entry made for a transcribing pause. AL has now applied the new measurement unit of parasols to accacia trees. We and AL learn far more than is necessary about fruit farming, land measurement, holiday rentals and chimney top making. By the time AW objects to the flea ridden auberge both her and I have lost it. Make of this encyclopedic entry what you will. Frankly, I’d have barred the bedroom door after today’s info onslaught.
no kiss not with her at all - fine morning - F68 in my back room at 10:10 - breakfast at 9 - Ann still poorly her bowels no better - had our host M Bernard - he fancied the 11 minerals I had left out of the box = 20/. so I took only 4 for 6/. – quartz upon chaux carbouté 3/., cristaux de quartz 1/., spath pésante, bartye, d’annouay 1/., pierre ollaire 1/.
he calls set-e-ra is what our cocher called stèré – a setĕra = 900 toises carrés but they commonly go here by the journal (plural journaux) = 2/3 of a setĕra or 600 toises carrés - terre à chauvre is worth 3000 francs a setĕra - terre with vines and bled = from 2000/ 2400 francs a setĕra - tear de vigne = francs 1800 to 2000 francs a setĕra - the vine-hills (as at his own campagne) are what they call mi-côtes (i.e. demi côtes) - M Perrier has no land that he (M Pérard) knows of but at Vizille and none there but what belongs to the Chateau and may have from 60 to 80 seteras - but it is the Chateau which makes the land valuable - in buying land one has to consider where it is terre battie, or not; that is, terre with a good house on it, or not - where there is a very large quantity of land, the house is generally given in - where there is not much land, of the house is a consideration - the chateau at Vizelle valuable as being a large manufacturing - filature de coton and employing now 200 to 400 oeuviers - wheat is sold by the boisseau weighing 42 lb + or - according to the goodness of the wheat - it is now 4/50 per boisseau should be 6/. to enable the farmer to pay his way comfortably - M Perard gave 22,000 francs for his campagne (has 17 setĕras) and has laid out from 36,000 to 40,000 francs - wants 10,000 francs for all the trouble he has had the 28 months since he bought it, and asked 70,000 francs but his wife does not wish him to sell - he will assure the estate producing 100 louis = 2400/ per annum without making anything of the house - it is situate in what is called the Beauplan –
took a guide, and out, (left Ann although) at 11:50 to the chateau fort or Bastille on the high compact limestone rock north of the town - had got a considerable way above the engineer’s house when he himself came and I was obliged to turn back and ask leave of the commandant - vexed enough - but could not help it - went back the engineer with me - and shewed my passport - made my story good - the commandant very civil asked me to take bev[erage] en eau sucré and this the which I declined - went a good way up with me - gave me note to the lieutinent in command at the top, and asked me to stop at his and take something on my return and I promised to call - I counted above 350 steps and forgot to count those perhaps 20 or 30 to the very top, and the others lower down - besides all that traversing I certainly mounted 400 steps - very fine views of the town
about halfway and at the very top at 1:30 magnificent view of the valleys of the Isère and Drac - the former winds near the town in large folds - very beautiful - staid 10 minutes under the boiling sun enchanted with the view - the Graissivaudan valley at the apex of the angle stands Grenoble a very fine rich (deserving all of its praises – the fine high Savoy mountain snow-ridged on the east rather hid by clouds but the range hills of hills beautifully thrown together with pointed round elongated all shaped tops - everyone should go to the top of the chateau - from the higher mountain above it the town would be marked by the castle – heated as I was, I was well repaid –
down at the old tower, where lives the engineer and his wife, at 2:30 - very civil - hoped I should go and see them again - gave me a nice little nosegay from their flower pots on the top of the tower - he lost his right arm in Spain at the taking of Valentia (Valence) and - has 1500/. a year pay and 300/. gratification and lives, rent-free of course, in the tower – a taker of roads came in - said the new road to Marseille by Claix, Vizelle etc would be finished in 4 or 5 years as also the new road to Italy by Bourg d’Oisans, Grave, Madeleine, Lauzet etc to Oulx and Exilles and Souza would be done in 5 years - 10 leagues done - 30 more to do the road is done to beyond Bourg d’Oisans- 1/4 hour at the engineers ‘Mr de Matheis, Garde du Génie, Chevalier de la legion d’honneur, à Rabot’ – born at Turin - gave me his address written very well with his left hand –
and returning went to the marbrier, near the good stone bridge ‘Bernard fils Marbrier, rue du no.12, près le pont de Pierre, à Grenoble’ - 1 chimney piece very pretty dark coloured ground much veined with yellow - found in a ravine near Grenoble a - no quarry of it - called brêche de tez, la cheminée conte 150/. transport to Paris 12/. and 15/. to London perhaps 30/. would engage it at 50/. - but what would be the duty? - could furnish 10 or 11 specimens of Grenoble marbles, or marbres du pays of the Dauphiny alps 3 1/2 inches carrés 1/4 inch thick at 3/. each –
home a 3 1/2 - paid all and off from l’ hotel des Ambassadors, Grenoble, at 4:35 – A-[Ann]’s bowels indisposed all the time – the town too low, and near the river - so glad to be off - like the neighbouring hills exceeding for living on - not at all disappointed with town or country - the town a good provincial town, though not handsome - had no time to see the musée - beautiful drive along the river winding tolerably near for some distance - at 5:35 having driven a very high by-road alighted at Campagne of our horte of a vignoble about 1/4 mile from the road (right) - formerly belonging to the Chartreux - shewed us the cave and the great 2 or 3 fontres (casks that 30 men could stand in at once) they left there, and the wine press - still perfectly good (of oak) though a century or two old – rez de chausée a good salon with cabinet for two beds at one end, and two other pieces [rooms] (small) – au 1er distribution with kitchen above, a bel? to be let – the [fermin?] under the same roof and the kitchen and 2 or 3 pieces reserved for his wife’s father and mother - I asked if the tenant could have a garden - no! But M Pernard would give him half the produce of the garden - this rez de chausée 1er well furnished for 1000 francs a year – for la belle saison May to October exclusive – everything really very nicely arranged –
find 7 1/2 foot parasol (in English umbrella) accacias, planted last November looking beautiful - had them from Martin Burdin Chambéri, at 24 sols per tree - and all sorts of rose-bushes at 12 to 16 sols each - find large 7 1/2 ft blueberry trees at 10 sols each – would he sell them to me at that price – M Penard will get and send me off to England as many as I please at the price he himself paid - the leaves of a fine young well headed mulberry tree sell for 20 to 30/. for the season – manure (engrais) (horse manure) very dear - had just 6000 francs worth into his land – but vines a hot thing themselves and did not do with a hot manure - wanted a cold one – la laiche bauche the best - the coarse ready grass (vide line 6 p 128) - too much horse dung bad, too hot -shewed his pavilion with great pleasure - pretty painted in fresco -an Italian from Turin did it and him and two men 2 1/2 months doing it for 600 francs - Ann sadly tired of so much talking she did not understand - but liked the place very well –
off again at 7, and at Voreppe (fine beautiful drive as before) a shabby little town at 7 1/2 - in the rough road coming away had lost the shaft’s bolt or staple - the blacksmith having waited for me (I was bargaining with the woman of the Inn, but she was trop exigeant and 36 minutes were lost) - off from Voreppe at 8:06 sorry not to staid the night but Ann thought we should have fleas in such a looking auberge and I determined not to give the woman more than 21/. for the night and breakfast tomorrow as though had little to give us for dinner and wanted 25/. - a pity to have to drive in the dark - fine rocks high and perpendicular we passed close under soon after leaving Voreppe, then fine shaped-hills and wood were dimly seen - alighted at l'hotel des Cours, chex Bearne at Voisin, at 9:40 - very good large room with two cabinets à un lit, at the end of the room - very comfortable - the master of the house very civil and reasonable - would object to nothing - would have all to me - and take my price - nice little supper- very fine day at 11:40 till about 5:00 p.m. then a shower and afterwards a few drops F70°at 12:10 tonight Not with her tonight
Photographers: Roberto Conte
The collaboration with photographers creates Architcetuul’s catalogue with amazing photo material from all over the world. Find out more about architectural photographers and their work on our Pinterest Boards? This first edition is dedicated to Roberto Conte, who already contributed his Concrete Patterns.
Together with Stefano Perego they just published Soviet Asia: Soviet Modernist Architecture in Central Asia in which they present material from the former Soviet republics of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan, documenting buildings constructed from the 1950s until the fall of the USSR. In this occasion we talked with Roberto.
What is the role of photography in architecture?
Architects have always been very careful about the way their buildings were photographed. Not everyone has the possibility or the privilege to experience architecture. Sometimes a photo is the only way to have a sensorial relation with the object. Because of the digital render aesthetic, we often don't experience what was actually built.
How do you work; which is your approach?
I start with a research of information and a customer’s brief about the project. I also pay attention on time checking for best natural lights on the site with digital maps and specific software. I tend to explore around location often knocking at the doors of nearby houses to have specific views on the matter. Regarding the images results, I always try to give a good representation of the structure itself from an analytical point of view, showcasing the project features, as well as trying to trigger emotions as surprise or interest.
Church of St. John the Baptist by Dominikus Böhm (1922-1926) in Neu-Ulm, Germany. | Photo © Roberto Conte (2016)
What are the difficulties? Mostly are related to light management, points of view restraints as well as site condition, when there are objects that impact too much on the site or hide the building. Some buildings are difficult to be photographed in Spring or Summer because they are surrounded by trees or some facades are pointing towards the North. In strong sunny days that makes difficult to get a good picture.
What is your inspiration? One of my main sources is definitely Gabriele Basilico, followed by Bernd and Hilla Becher, Andreas Gursky, Edward Burtynsky and Frédéric Chaubin.
From London to Marseilles
The mere expenses of conveyance from London to Marseilles, via Folkestone, Boulogne, Paris, Lyons, and Avignon, by steamer, railway, and diligence, are 130 francs. This is for the banquette of the diligence and second class of the railways, but the arrangements are so good that it is a mere throwing away of money for a tourist to go in the more expensive places. The route from Paris, at present, is by rail to Tonnerre, and thence by diligence to Dijon; from Dijon to Chalons by rail; from Chalons to Lyons by steamer, on the Saone; from Lyons to Avignon by diligence, and from Avignon to Marseilles by the rail. The journey occupies three days and three nights; of these two nights only are passed on the road. When the line of railway is completed from Paris to Avignon, of course the time will be considerably abridged. The route is most interesting, and has the incalculable advantage of avoiding all the rolling misery of the Bay of Biscay.
The above accounts only include the actual travelling expenses. Some of these were casualties; for instance, we waited four days at Leghorn for a steamer, and one or two at Milan for letters. But these chances may happen to any one, and therefore I have put them all down from my own pocket-book.
I have not included washing and payments to guides. The first may be reckoned at the same rate as at home; and the second will depend upon what knowledge of the country the traveller, or his companion, may possess.
It is always advisable to travel in company. The same payment often does as well for two as for one; and very frequently a bargain can be advantageously made at hotels. It must be understood that most of the above expenses are the single shares of the bills.
LIVING AT CONSTANTINOPLE
“ How did you get on in your eating and drinking, in the East ? ” is a question I have been asked several times since I returned. The answer is simply, just as well as in Paris, or Naples, or anywhere else.
There are three good hotels in Pera—the Hotel d’Angleterre, Hotel d’Europe, and Madame Guisep- pino’s. There are some other pensions, better adapted to foreigners.
The Hotel d’Angleterre is certainly the best. It is kept by Misseri, who was Mr. Kinglake’s travelling servant, on the tour which that gentleman has made so world-known in his Eothen. The arrangements of the house are very excellent, and Madame Misseri is an Englishwoman. The expense is about twelve and sixpence a-day, reckoning in English money at its valuation last autumn. English papers are taken in bulgaria private tours kazanlak.
The Hotel d’Europe, kept by Giovanni Destuniano, who was formerly a valet de place attached to Misseri’s house, is very comfortable for bachelors, and somewhat cheaper than the other. The expense is about
ten shillings a-day, but it is best to make a bargain. In either case this includes breakfast and dinner, with wine, coffee, and sleeping apartment. Galignani, and the Illustrated News are taken in. A double- bedded room on the first floor, next the salon, is to be recommended.
Madame Guiseppino’s is charmingly situated on the heights above the Golden Horn, and enjoys a very fine view. I am not acquainted with the bouse internally, but it has been some time established, and is well spoken of.
The expense of a valet-de-place is a dollar per diem. Demetri was stupid, but attentive and very honest—two eligible qualities.
From London to Marseilles
The mere expenses of conveyance from London to Marseilles, via Folkestone, Boulogne, Paris, Lyons, and Avignon, by steamer, railway, and diligence, are 130 francs. This is for the banquette of the diligence and second class of the railways, but the arrangements are so good that it is a mere throwing away of money for a tourist to go in the more expensive places. The route from Paris, at present, is by rail to Tonnerre, and thence by diligence to Dijon; from Dijon to Chalons by rail; from Chalons to Lyons by steamer, on the Saone; from Lyons to Avignon by diligence, and from Avignon to Marseilles by the rail. The journey occupies three days and three nights; of these two nights only are passed on the road. When the line of railway is completed from Paris to Avignon, of course the time will be considerably abridged. The route is most interesting, and has the incalculable advantage of avoiding all the rolling misery of the Bay of Biscay.
The above accounts only include the actual travelling expenses. Some of these were casualties; for instance, we waited four days at Leghorn for a steamer, and one or two at Milan for letters. But these chances may happen to any one, and therefore I have put them all down from my own pocket-book.
I have not included washing and payments to guides. The first may be reckoned at the same rate as at home; and the second will depend upon what knowledge of the country the traveller, or his companion, may possess.
It is always advisable to travel in company. The same payment often does as well for two as for one; and very frequently a bargain can be advantageously made at hotels. It must be understood that most of the above expenses are the single shares of the bills.
LIVING AT CONSTANTINOPLE
“ How did you get on in your eating and drinking, in the East ? ” is a question I have been asked several times since I returned. The answer is simply, just as well as in Paris, or Naples, or anywhere else.
There are three good hotels in Pera—the Hotel d’Angleterre, Hotel d’Europe, and Madame Guisep- pino’s. There are some other pensions, better adapted to foreigners.
The Hotel d’Angleterre is certainly the best. It is kept by Misseri, who was Mr. Kinglake’s travelling servant, on the tour which that gentleman has made so world-known in his Eothen. The arrangements of the house are very excellent, and Madame Misseri is an Englishwoman. The expense is about twelve and sixpence a-day, reckoning in English money at its valuation last autumn. English papers are taken in bulgaria private tours kazanlak.
The Hotel d’Europe, kept by Giovanni Destuniano, who was formerly a valet de place attached to Misseri’s house, is very comfortable for bachelors, and somewhat cheaper than the other. The expense is about
ten shillings a-day, but it is best to make a bargain. In either case this includes breakfast and dinner, with wine, coffee, and sleeping apartment. Galignani, and the Illustrated News are taken in. A double- bedded room on the first floor, next the salon, is to be recommended.
Madame Guiseppino’s is charmingly situated on the heights above the Golden Horn, and enjoys a very fine view. I am not acquainted with the bouse internally, but it has been some time established, and is well spoken of.
The expense of a valet-de-place is a dollar per diem. Demetri was stupid, but attentive and very honest—two eligible qualities.
