Doing the right thing can suck
There are things in life that you cannot prepare for no matter how you try: the death of a parent or spouse, losing a job and having to do exactly the opposite of what a family member wants.
That is where I am today.
Monday at 1330 I will be meeting with Family Court staff and an attorney to beginning the process of being declared my sister’s legal guardian and having my sister removed from her home and placed in assisted living.
Why? Here’s a dose of reality.
Susan has reached the point where she cannot take care of herself, full stop. She is hiding things and lying to her doctors and social worker about what she’s doing and her medical condition.
She refuses to let anyone into her bedroom or bathroom to clean.
Her diabetes is out of control. She is not following medical advice from her doctor or her nurses. She has no feeling below her waist. three years ago she was crushed in an auto accident - she blacked out driving 40 mph and hit a tree.
Why did she black out? Uncontrolled diabetes sent her into diabetic shock. She broke her back in ten places, broke ribs. Add diabetes to the mix and it’s not pretty.
Her pain level is at minimum a six, usually an eight. She refuses to take any pain medication, including Tylenol.
She has tremors in her hands courtesy of a small inoperable brain tumor. There might be a medical option to help but she refuses to allow any testing.
She’s Incontinent and has uncontrolled bowel movements.
Her short term memory is sketchy.
She is chronically depressed.
Two year ago I stopped in Raleigh on my way to Virginia to see her after the death of our brother Scott. We had barely talked in 30 some odd years. Not all siblings like each other.
I had no idea how bad off she was. She was barely able to take care of herself. Trash was piled on the floor. i stayed to lend a hand until she could decide what to do. I had no inkling two years later I would still be here taking care of her.
Taking care of a loved one is a thankless, incredibly difficult job.
Yes, it’s a job and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.
for the longest time I acted as chef, bottle washer, house keeper, chauffeur and all around servant. Each time she angered or fired the home health nurses I had to learn how to be a diabetic wound nurse and change dressings as often as I was allowed (I may go get my LPN license now that I have some experience).
I managed to get to the gym and on hikes daily but i was always within 20 minutes of the house. Not that this really mattered because Susan doesn’t like phones, never answers them.
I always assume when i enter the living room I will find her dead.
As the months progressed things got worse as she got worse. Trips the ER happened regularly. As soon as she was stabilized she would check herself out. Her doctors and medical help were constantly complaining about her nasty attitude, her condescending attitude with anyone who wasn’t a doctor. Because she has a PhD in Psychology she regarded all non-doctors are little more than the help an that she is a peer with her doctors.
She repeatedly screams at me and anyone who crossed her (code for not agreeing with her).
If you try to tell her something she doesn’t like, she will close her eyes and rock.
They also complained that they had to clean up her messes after each visit.
Twice home health companies fired her because of her lack of personal hygiene and the filthy conditions they had to work under.
The home health companies jointly filed a “concern report” with NC Adult Protective Services. One visit convinced them Susan’s lifestyle could not continue.
All the while I am trying to smooth ruffled feathers and attempting to keep what I can clean.
Please believe me when I tell you my writing is the cleaned up, trying to be compassionate and kind version of what goes on here.
It had to stop. I am in so far over my head.
No matter what your feeling are for a family member or a loved one there does come a time where you have to say enough is enough. i just can’t do this any anymore. I waited too long. I should have done this long ago.
And yes, I have learned a great deal about myself the past two years. I am much more compassionate. i understand the true meaning of service to others. I understand putting someone’s life ahead of your own. I am a so much better person for being here for my sister.
I am told that what family caregivers get wrong is they have to provide the care.
You do not.
I’m sure some out there are wonderfully qualified to become their loved ones nurse and can handle anything that comes up. Bravo to you. You have skills and a mentality I do not possess.
For a time i felt guilty for even considering “abandoning” my sister. That was wrong of me.
There is no guilt or shame in admitting you can’t handle a situation of any kind, especially one like this.
I no longer feel guilty. I don’t feel guilty for doing this behind her back.
I feel good because like it or not, she will get the medical help she desperately needs.
I wish I could do more. I can’t.
I feel good because I will soon get my life back.
You may think my attitude is cold and heartless. My attitude is allowing me to get my sister the best care possible so perhaps she can live out her life in better shape than she is today. That will be up to her. The medical team and I can only do so much. The rest is up to her.

What Makes Internal Medicine Doctors Different From Other Doctors?
There are more than 120 clinical fortes and subspecialties. Along these lines, once in a while it tends to be hard to figure out which one can best suit your medical care needs. Frequently, this disarray revolves around the administrations of an inward medication doctor. While there are a few likenesses, there are some eminent contrasts between inward medication and different claims to fame. In the first place, we should check out the absolute most generally posed inquiries about internal medication.
What is inside medication?
As indicated by the American College of Physicians, interior medication is a science that addresses the smartest possible solution. The forte consolidates the insightful assessment of research facility science with a customized, merciful way to deal with grown-up medication. This mastery empowers specialists to treat both normal diseases and complex ailments. They likewise have some expertise in treating long haul persistent sicknesses, for example, Type 2 diabetes and coronary illness.
Specialists who work in interior medication are called internists or general internists. Internal medication experts likewise investigate how every one of the frameworks in the body cooperate overall in light of the fact that an issue in one region could cause difficulties in another.
For what reason is it called inside medication?
It comes from the German word innere medizin. During the 1800s, German doctors were joining information from the studies of bacteriology (investigation of microscopic organisms), physiology (investigation of how the body capacities) and pathology (the investigation of sicknesses) into their therapy plans. Doctors tracked down the more they comprehended these subjects, the better prepared they were to help their patients.
They were called internal medication specialists or internists since they zeroed in on the "internal"" sicknesses rather than the outer appearances of those infections.
What is the contrast between an internist and an assistant?
An internist is a doctor who represents considerable authority in inner medication. The individual in question is authorized and may have board confirmation.
An understudy is a doctor who has finished clinical school however is as yet in preparing.
What sort of preparing is needed to be an interior medication specialist?
To turn into an internist, alumni of clinical school should finish a three-year inward medication residency. After the residency, the doctor can practice or decide to practice further in a subspecialty like irresistible infections or diabetes.
Do inward medication doctors do yearly physicals?
Indeed! Truth be told, at Raleigh Medical Group, we offer customary ladies' and men's wellbeing screenings. We need to set up long haul associations with our patients so we can help them on their excursion of health and be accomplices in their consideration.
What are a few sicknesses that inward medication specialists treat?
Our internists treat:
Diabetes
Elevated cholesterol
Hypertension
Sinus diseases
Sensitivities
Furthermore, we offer the accompanying administrations:
Bone thickness screenings
Echocardiograms
Holter observing (heart mood checking)
Stress test
Ultrasound
Vaccinations
Yearly tests for Women and Men
For what reason is there disarray over the jobs of family specialists versus inside medication doctors?
The disarray emerges in light of the fact that the vast majority of the patients seen by family doctors are grown-ups. Frequently, when their kids are wiped out, guardians take them to a pediatrician, a doctor who has some expertise in treating youngsters, rather than an overall professional, for example, a family specialist.
Nonetheless, now and again family doctors do treat youngsters. Truth be told, as indicated by the American College of Physicians, 10-to-15 percent of family medication patients are youngsters. Family specialists may likewise see "tweens" or those in early youth. Inner medication doctors just treat grown-ups. Be that as it may, at some inside medication rehearses — like Rapha Primary Care Center — there are doctors who are family specialists. In any case, the specialists at our training just treat grown-ups, not youngsters.
All interior medication preparing should occur in both outpatient and inpatient settings. Internists likewise have broad schooling in every one of the inside medication subspecialties — which incorporate endocrinology, rheumatology, nervous system science and irresistible sicknesses.
FOR MORE THAN 45 YEARS, WE'VE BEEN THE INTERNAL MEDICINE PROVIDERS OF CHOICE FOR THE TRIANGLE AREA.
Our doctors come from a wide assortment of foundations, yet they make them thing in like manner: They picked this claim to fame since it offers them the chance to treat the entire patient and in addition to a rundown of indications. This way of thinking grows to each part of a patient's medical care, from heart observing to smart dieting to making an altered exercise plan. It’s pretty late and I’m just sitting back in my chair thinking about a lot of things right now.
A lot of existential sort of things but, most of all of course, my cats.
They meant a lot to us. I mean, they were part of our lives for 13 years. That’s over half my lifetime. It feels like it went by so quickly...
And through those years we always tried the best we could with them. Always got them food they loved to eat even if it wasn’t healthy for them because we didn’t know it was maybe too carbs-y for them or too fatty or whatever. A happy cat was a happy cat and that was all that mattered.
And sure, they got sick here and there but they always recovered. You don’t think much of it when it’s just the occasional cold every so often. You just give them medicine and they’re all better again.
...Then they get older, and slower. And you don’t see it at first.
And then...suddenly cancer.
Be it from environmental causes, or genetics, when Buddy got sick, and we couldn’t fix it, that was the first time I realized that our time with our cats was running out.
Eventually he succumbed to whatever was making him sick, we never truly found out what it was, the doctor’s couldn’t figure it out. Not even the specialists, but he was in a lot of pain. And I wish I had known that it would have ended that way, because I probably would have opted to not have him go through that.
But I didn’t know. And I feel like it’s my fault. I spend thousands on him trying to get him help but in the end there was nothing to be done and I only prolonged it because I just hoped and hoped there was a chance Buddy would get better.
..So he passed...and then Raleigh started acting strangely. He had been diagnosed with diabetes in 2016, around July or August, right when I started working. And it had been hard at first, but we fell into a schedule. We bought him the best food, took him to the vet’s for checkups to make sure we were regulating his insulin. We never did get it regulated, as there were so many factors we had to take into account when feeding him. We had to learn just how sensitive he was. Diabetes is very complicated like that.
And as time went on, he started to breathe harder and harder.
Eventually we took him for that because we were worried.
In the course of a week, fluid had gathered in his chest cavity, essentially surrounding his already enlarged heart (he’s had this all his life, prone to heart disease and such. He was just born that way and we knew about it) and surrounding his lungs, leaving him very little room to breathe.
He was also diagnosed with FIV that same day. That combined with everything else meant his immune system was completely shot.
The doctor hoped the liquid was just water and that a diuretic would help him clear it out, along with a course of three different antibiotics to take care of some secondary infection that was found elsewhere , though they weren’t sure where.
A week went by quickly. We saw improvement. He was more lively, he caught his breath a little more, he was eating. He seemed happy. He went outside a lot.
Then came his re-check.
The doctor was encouraged. He noted how he looked better than the last time.
But when he took the xray, it showed he’d only gotten worse. The night before, Raleigh was breathing through his mouth, something he hadn’t been doing all week before.
The same day, in other words, this Thursday March 23, so...two days before now, the doctor essentially explained how there was nothing we could do. How he would die a slow, slow and horrible death due to being suffocated. They couldn’t drain the fluid with how big his heart was, and even then, it was already risky.
It would be all for nothing.
So the only thing left to do was to spare him a terrible fate such as that. He wouldn’t last much longer, maybe another week if we were lucky, judging by how fast his chest filled up. His time was already limited.
Yesterday March 24, I woke up to hearing him walking around, thumping loudly like he always did. Everything seemed so normal, despite the fact that we all knew he had his last vet appointment today. It made the morning slow as syrup, but it also felt like it went by really fast.
We let him eat whatever food he wanted. We let him go outside into the sunshine and eat grass and do whatever he wanted to do. He could only walk a few steps before he was breathing through his mouth really hard. He looked very tired...His eyes were still bright and alert though somehow, like he wanted to still do normal things. He still wanted to be with us.
He just couldn’t breathe. He couldn’t even lay down on his side because it would constrict his air flow.
He was uncomfortable. Not being able to breathe is the worst feeling in the world I wager.
So, he came back inside, he sat in the bathroom for a little while and napped. Eventually 11:30 came and we wanted more time, so we called and asked to move the appointment to 1:30.
Time crawled, then it went fast. He started to breathe really hard with nobody poking or touching him, or doing anything. That was when we knew he had to go.
That cat loved being hugged and kissed and pet, and we couldn’t even do that for him because any sort of touch would make it hard for him to take in air.
So, we cried, me and my sister kissed him goodbye and hugged him and told him we loved him as my parents took him out to the car to take him to the vet. I took paw print molds of his paws in playdoh and got his nails covered with all sorts of colors. He hated it.
He hated going into the cage too, and was meowing a lot as he left.
About an hour and a half later, my parents came home. At that point I still prayed for maybe a tiny miracle. That there was a mistake and they could fix it with a miracle surgery. But I was wrong.
As soon as they walked into the door, I heard crying. I knew Raleigh was already gone by then. Put to sleep.
And god it hurts. Especially since it’d only been maybe 2 months since we lost Buddy so suddenly.
...But we put Raleigh down for his own good. Because we loved him so much. We didn’t want him to be in that kind of pain. I know this in my head, and even though there’s that, I still feel like we took away maybe the few last good days Raleigh would have had. ...Then again, I doubt he would have lasted another week with how quickly his sickness was progressing.
It’s a hard thing for me to grasp.
Now our house is empty and we have no cats roaming around making noise, no one at the food bowls and no one laying by the windows.
That part of my life is over now. Possibly the last few connections to my childhood that I had. The two beings that loved me and all of us unconditionally. The cats we spoiled rotten with food and love and god knows what else.
...I feel like I’ve lost a sense of purpose and I don’t know what to do. I want them back, but I know I won’t ever get them back ....Not here anyway.
Wherever you two are, Buddy and Raleigh, I hope you’re together and keeping each other company even though you two didn’t like each other much. I hope you’re not hurting, I hope you don’t miss us too much, like we miss both of you.
You two were the best cats I’ve ever met and I’m so happy you were our cats. I’m sad that you guys had to go so soon, I wanted you around for another couple of years at least. Buddy you would have been 13 this month, after my birthday. And Raleigh you would have been 14 in August.
It’s ok now though. You guys don’t have to hurt. Just...please promise you won’t drive everyone else up there or wherever crazy with how picky you two are. Buddy I hope you’re wearing your sweaters, and Raleigh, I hope you’re eating everything you want. All the people food you couldn’t have.
It’s gonna be very very lonely without you two. I wish you’d both come back in some other cat and somehow I’d know it was you. I have dreams about you both like that very often. You’re kittens but you don’t look like yourselves, but I still know they’re you.
But if that doesn’t happen, send another cat or dog or any animal my way that I’ll love too. Some pet that’ll make me feel the same as I felt when we picked you two out. We knew you were both special, that’s why we brought you home.
I wanna feel that again, at least.
Whenever I get to where you are, if I ever do, just promise you’ll be there waiting for me. Or if I get lost, maybe come and find me.
For now I just have to suffer through the ebb and flow for a while it seems.

Understanding Diabetes: A Comprehensive Guide
Diabetes is a chronic health condition that affects millions of people worldwide. It occurs when your blood glucose (blood sugar) levels are too high. Blood glucose is your primary source of energy, derived from the foods you consume. Insulin, a pancreatic hormone, transports glucose from food into your cells and is used for energy. Sometimes your body does not produce enough—or any—insulin or does not use it properly. Glucose then remains in your bloodstream and does not reach your cells.
Symptoms of Diabetes:
Common symptoms of diabetes include:
Increased thirst and hunger
Frequent urination
Unexplained weight loss
Fatigue
Blurred vision
Slow-healing sores
Frequent infections
If you experience any of these symptoms, consult a healthcare provider for a proper diagnosis.
Managing Diabetes
Along with lifestyle changes and medical treatment we can manage diabetes. Following are some key aspects of diabetes management:
Healthy Eating: A balanced diet is crucial for managing diabetes.
Regular Exercise: Physical activity helps control blood sugar levels, manage weight, and reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.
Medication and Insulin Therapy: Some people with diabetes need medication or insulin therapy to manage their condition.
Monitoring Blood Sugar Levels: Regular monitoring of blood sugar levels is essential for managing diabetes.
Education and Support: Understanding your condition, knowing how to monitor your blood sugar, and learning how to manage your lifestyle are crucial steps.
Final Thoughts
Diabetic patients must take a proactive approach to controlling their health. By making informed choices and working closely with your healthcare team, you can effectively manage your condition and lead a healthy, fulfilling life. At Satyam Primary Care, we are dedicated to providing comprehensive care and support for individuals with diabetes. Reiki Healing Raleigh NC Experts Offer Helps Reduce Stress And Its Many Complications
By Shirley Evans
In this day and age, it can be extremely challenging for a hardworking and ambitious individual to have a stress free life. According to health experts, stress is the root of so many health problems, ranging from anxiety, diabetes to heart issues. Fortunately, there are so many different all natural methods for managing stress that a busy person may choose from. Something that is getting lots of attention especially among those who wish to utilize unseen energies is what's known as reiki healing Raleigh NC experts are offering these days. Due to the fact that it is linked to the development of various health nightmares, you need to deal with stress accordingly. Your life may actually be placed in danger if you fail to do so. That's because one of the many problems associated with uncontrolled stress is high blood pressure, and it's something that can put you at risk of heart disease. Medical professionals say that heart disease kills more people on the face of the planet yearly than any other illness or condition that you can think of. Despite of what many believe, smoking cigarettes, drinking alcohol excessively, consuming foods rich in cholesterol and failure to exercise regularly are not the only reasons why one may suffer from heart disease. Based on studies, chronic stress is also capable of causing the number one killer to come into being. Although it's a matter that can leave a lot of people fearing for their lives, heart disease can actually be prevented easily. Modifying your diet and lifestyle is an initial step that you may take. If you're already diagnosed with the problem, it's a good idea to have regular checkups. Another vital move to make is properly managing your stress. Unfortunately, it's not just heart disease that may stem from poor management of stress. Diabetes is on one more serious health concern that you should watch out for. Having a stressful life can increase your risk of suffering from diabetes as it can cause your blood glucose to become elevated. Having diabetes is not the beginning and end of one's health nightmare. According to doctors, diabetes is a disease that needs to be managed for life. Otherwise, so many of its complications may strike. Some examples of those include obesity, nerve damage, kidney failure, loss of vision and leg amputations. If you are stressed out every single day, it's not unlikely for you to have anxiety. It's something that can be expected since stress can cause you to remain in a fight or flight mode constantly. If you have a stressful job, it's very much possible for you to have clinical depression, too, according to mental health professionals. The good news is the various health problems linked to stress are highly preventable. One of the best steps that may be taken by the concerned individual is to avoid as many stressors as possible and also engage in various stress relieving activities. Reiki is something that is highly accessible these days most especially because a lot of its practitioners can carry out the healing session remotely.

Car Insurance - How much of my premium would I get back?
Hi everyone I live in the UK and I insure my car with Direct Line. I have never had any issues with them before apart from now that I have a new car. I have several years no claims for my driving, most of which are through policies with Direct Line. However, the first 2 years I was driving I was with another insurance company and gained 2 years no claims with them. When I took out my latest policy with Direct Line after buying a new vehicle they said they needed to see proof of my no claims. I contacted my old insurance company who sent me a letter confirming these years and I sent this to Direct Line, they said they never received it so I requested another letter and sent this one also but via Recorded Delivery. It is now a month on and Direct Line are claiming they haven't received this one either although proof of postage and tracking shows it was signed for. I wish to cancel my policy with Direct Line and was wondering how much of my policy cost I would be entitled to receive back from them. Many thanks""

Can an insurance company raise your rates even though you've completed 12 hour traffic school?
I understand that a 2nd violation within 18 months appears on your public record. I was told that even though after taking 12 hour traffic school and my violation appearing as a dismissal....insurance companies can still legally raise my rates. Then I see people refer to a CA law that states that even if a violation appears on a public record, if there is a dismissal insurance companies cannot legally raise your rates.""
CAR INSURANCE QUESTION?
Hello, I was in a car accident 3 weeks ago today in Massachusetts but live in NH. The other guy swerved in my lane on the highway, although their were no witnesses and we still have no word on who was at fault. I was driving my boyfriends car which was no insured, although I have comprehensive coverage on mine. My insurance (gieco) will pay a $1000 pf my medical and have put a claim in for my boyfriends car. I was wondering if anyone knew if they would cover his car? As it looks like the guy who swerved in my lane doesnt have insurance either, as NH doesn't require car insurance. If anyone knows if it possible please let me know. An adjuster has already considered it a total loss. Thanks!""

Hi. I'll be getting my first car soon and I have some questions regarding car insurance. My Dad lives out of state (I live with my mother), and I was wondering if he can add me to his insurance policy. I believe he has State Farm. I understand that it would be cheaper to go under my parent's policy than to create a new policy just for myself. How do I challenge my auto insurance company's appraisal of damages to other car in an at-fault(my) acci ?
I read-ended another car at an intersection. Both of us were stopped at a light. When the light turned green, the other car started moving and immediately slammed on brakes. In the meanwhile, I had taken my foot off brake and hit the car (at < 5mph). The other party has filed claim for $1350 for damages and also for unknown amount of bodily injury. There is not even a mark of any collision on my car (as the speed was low). My insurance company has agreed to their claim related to damages and is waiting for the exact amount for the bodily injury claim. This has been quite unfair to me and will definitely bump up my premium like crazy. Is there any way I can challenge my insurance company's appraisal of the damages ? Are there any other alternatives ? What kind of evidence would I need to furnish for the same ? We had called a Cop to report the accident. I wanted him to note that the impact was at < 5mph. Diabetes Sisters Gather in North Carolina
Since May of 2010, the amazing Diabetes Sisters group founded by Brandy Barnes has held an annual Weekend for Women conference, that I understand is a life-changing experience. Sadly for me, I've been invited to speak twice, but have not been able to attend because May is such a big month for my family. But fortunately, we have kindred spirit Sysy Morales, who blogs at The Girls Guide to Diabetes, joining us today to shed some light on what happens at these annual D-girl fests:

The 2012 Diabetes Sister's Weekend for Women Conference took place this past weekend in Raleigh, North Carolina. I attended last year and found it extremely worthwhile to hang out with fellow diabetic women as well as recharge my "diabetes management" batteries. This weekend did not disappoint.
The conference is for any woman with diabetes, regardless of the type. Just shy of 100 women attended this year to support, learn from, and celebrate each other.
Friday night consisted of networking activities which allowed us to spend some time chatting with a few handfuls of women, and I found this a great way to kick off the conference. Bonding and learning a bit about several women provided everyone with a lot of ease going into the event. Attendees seemed more enthusiastic and relaxed than last year. I know I was.
Saturday and Sunday provided many sessions for women to attend. I appreciated how we had two tracks to choose from, and I found all the speakers to be experts in their field and very aligned with the mission of DiabetesSisters, which is to positively encourage women towards health and happiness through education, awareness, and support.
Saturday morning began with a great start -- an hour of our choice of yoga, zumba, or tai chi. The talks consisted of women's most pressing concerns, such as motherhood, diet, weight management, depression, finding support, and of course, sex and relationships.
Speaking of relationships, DiabetesSisters held its first-ever Partner's Perspective Program this year, attended by more than 30 husbands and boyfriends with their partners. They also met separately to discuss the issues and emotions they face as partners of women with diabetes. My husband Alex provided input into the planning of the program and attended it. He wouldn't tell me what the men discussed (apparently they all swore to secrecy to encourage sharing) but he did say that he enjoyed being able to talk with a group of guys who knew exactly what he was dealing with. He appreciated being shown how to use a glucagon injection, and we ladies appreciated Janis Rozler speaking to the men privately about how diabetes affects women when it comes to sex, physically and mentally speaking. Thank you, Janis. I will let you know how it goes.
A few interesting tidbits I learned from the conference:
- Depression is common for women with diabetes and must be addressed and dealt with in order for diabetes management to be successful.
- Your doctor should screen you for depression once a year.
- Viagra may be a useful option for women to increase blood flow and stimulation.
- Women with diabetes (at any age) should be medically treated as if they have had a myocardial infarction.
- Exercise reduces the risk of type 2 diabetes by 58%.
- Disordered eating requires attention and is not to be ignored.
I know you all want to hear about what Nat Strand had to say. She was one of the winner's of The Amazing Race, has had type 1 diabetes for more than 20 years, and is an anesthesiologist. I personally have never watched The Amazing Race on CBS and hadn't really read much about Nat Strand, and so listening to her talk about her experience and what it meant to her was a real eye-opener. What she accomplished as a person with type 1 diabetes is genuinely impressive. She struck me as very charming, but also very humble and wise. She reminded us that "diabetes is an obstacle that by no means prevents you from doing anything" and she admitted that diabetes "is a beautiful talent to have in life because it makes you stronger in everything you do." You may be surprised to know that she considers discovering the DOC the best gift to come about from her experience with The Amazing Race. Nat hung around for the rest of the day, took pictures, and spoke with the attendees. She even won one of the hula hoop competitions that were held during that evening's celebration!
I presented at the conference with DiabetesSisters founder, Brandy Barnes on the topic of navigating the world of online technology, and was pleasantly surprised to discover how many people were excited to check out blogs like this one and other great DOC resources. I got emails later about how women were looking forward to connecting with other people with diabetes and get involved in diabetes advocacy. Sometimes we think "why aren't more people involved?" And I think many people are not aware of what exists out there. That's just one reason why I'm so thankful for DiabetesSisters and the Weekend for Women.
During the celebration, Brandy's 7-year old daughter, Summer, danced while singing us a song. I saw almost every person (even the men) stand up, clap, throw their hands up, and joyfully cheer her on. I got a sense that the weekend accomplished what it was meant to. We learned new things. We saw past the distinctions of type 1, 2, 1.5, gestational, and pre-diabetes. We supported each other. We were moved to action.
On Sunday morning, we went on a mile-long Orange:WILL Diabetes Awareness Walk with friends, family, and other community members. At the end of the conference, I witnessed women ready to go home with a renewed feeling of potential and hope for their lives with diabetes.
I cherished my time with the amazing women at the conference, feel more ready than ever to tackle my blood sugars, and will definitely be back next year. I'll leave you with some words from Dr. Strand: "Diabetes is THE amazing race...everyday."
Right on, sister.
Thanks for the great report, Sysy, and thanks for being our envoy!

Find a Diabetes Doctor Near You: Managing Diabetes with Expert Care
Diabetes is a growing concern worldwide, affecting millions of people each year. Proper management of diabetes begins with regular monitoring and the guidance of a trusted healthcare provider.
Understanding Diabetes
Diabetes is a chronic health condition that occurs when your blood sugar levels are consistently too high. This happens either because your body doesn’t produce enough insulin or doesn’t use it efficiently. There are three main types of diabetes:
Type 1 Diabetes: An autoimmune condition where the pancreas produces little to no insulin.
Type 2 Diabetes: The most common form, caused by insulin resistance and often linked to obesity and lifestyle factors.
Gestational Diabetes: Occurs during pregnancy and typically resolves after childbirth but can increase the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes later.
Why Managing Diabetes is Crucial?
Uncontrolled diabetes can lead to severe complications, including:
Heart disease and stroke
Kidney damage (diabetic nephropathy)
Eye problems (diabetic retinopathy)
Nerve damage (diabetic neuropathy)
Foot problems that can lead to infections or amputations
Managing diabetes effectively involves regular blood sugar monitoring, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and seeking professional medical guidance.
When Should You See a Diabetes Doctor?
If you experience any of the following symptoms or have been diagnosed with diabetes, it’s time to consult a doctor:
Increased thirst and frequent urination
Unexplained weight loss
Extreme fatigue
Blurred vision
Slow-healing wounds
Tingling or numbness in your hands or feet
A primary care doctor specializing in diabetes, like Dr. Amit Sharma at Satyam Primary Care, can help create a personalized plan for managing your condition.
How Can a Primary Care Doctor Help with Diabetes?

Lifestyle Guidance: Advice on diet, exercise, and weight management to control blood sugar levels.
