Hattie M. Carstens was a beloved activist who served a variety of social causes in Detroit until her death in 1915. This school, designed by the firm Malcomson & Higginbotham, opened on Coplin Street and East Vernor Highway a year later and named in her honor.

The three-story school has an F-shaped floor plan, the result of additions in 1919 and 1921. This made it fairly large for an elementary school, with 29 standard classrooms in addition to a library, kindergarten and four large specialty rooms. The building is also rather unusual among Detroit schools for its raised, fenestrated basement level, which is sunken half a level below. The front façade faces southwest onto Coplin Avenue, and the school sits in the middle of an entire 5-acre city block, just north of Vernor Highway.

The school is considered an outstanding example of the Arts and Crafts style that was popular in the early 1900s. This can best be seen in Carstens' decorative brick detail and tile and terra cotta that is focused around the central entrance and between floors. Malcomson & Higginbotham designed a handful of other schools in this style during this time period - Nichols School (1910), Breitmeyer School (1915) and Harms School (1917). Nichols and Harms are still in use; Breitmeyer was demolished in 2010. But the 1920s saw a shift in the design of educational buildings in the city, with a firm shift toward the Collegiate Gothic found at the great educational institutions of England. This makes schools of this style rare in Detroit.

An addition in 1919 added six homerooms, a gymnasium and an auditorium, and another addition two years later tacked on another nine classrooms.

The Herbert M. Rich School, named after a secretary of the Detroit Tuberculosis Society, was built in 1927 on the grounds of Carstens. That building was demolished at some point; it was a four-room bungalow-type structure with a dormitory.

In 1957, Carstens was converted into a unit for girls enrolled in the special education program, and opened the following year. Several basement classrooms were added in the late 1950s or early '60s.

The school continued serving the east side for the next half century. However, the Fox Creek neighborhood saw considerable decline and disinvestment during that time. Nevertheless, Carstens remained a high-performing school. staff went above and beyond to help their students. As Detroit URBEX wrote, "After several students were hospitalized with severe lead poisoning, Carstens began an outreach program educating families in the neighborhood about the dangers of lead paint in older houses. When teachers found out that many students were going hungry during weekends, they made extra meals for them to take home. A New York Times article noted 'to have more money for instruction, teachers sit with students at lunch, saving the school from having to hire lunchroom aides. Teachers hold jacket and shoe drives for children who have no winter coats and come to school in slippers. At Thanksgiving every child goes home with a frozen turkey donated by a local businessman. Twice a year a bus carrying a portable dentist’s office arrives, and a clinic is set up at the school so children can get their teeth checked.'”

However, as Detroit's population continued to decline, so did Carstens' enrollment, with the school losing more than half of its population between 1998 and 2007. In March of 2010, the district proposed closing Carstens Elementary, citing the loss of students and the $3 million in repairs the aging building needed. Parents fought to keep Carstens open and helped win it a temporary reprieve - but that stay of closure lasted only a year.

In 2011, Carstens was closed and merged with nearby Remus Robinson Middle School, making Carstens one of a staggering 195 public schools closed in the city between 2000 and 2015. Three years later, Carstens was among 57 closed Detroit Public Schools (DPS) properties given to the City of Detroit in exchange for forgiving millions of dollars in DPS' unpaid electrical bills. Sadly, the building has not faired well since closure, with major roof failure causing significant water damage throughout.

The City released a report in 2021 that offered potential developers insight into the structural integrity and floor plans of more than 60 vacant schools - 39 owned by the City and two dozen still owned by the school district. The effort was not only to take inventory of the dozens of vacant schools dotting the city, but also to incentivize redevelopment of the structures by reducing the upfront costs through the assessments provided. Given the roof failures and decade of decline, the City estimated that a renovation of Carstens would cost around $16.2 million, depending on use.

Carstens is located in Detroit's Fox Creek neighborhood, one that has seen more than its share of challenges and demolitions. The school is surrounded by vacant fields - and is home to one of the largest concentrations of vacant land and City-owned properties. Given the costs and challenges of redeveloping a school that's been vacant for more than a decade, this makes finding a savior for Carstens, no matter how beautiful the building is, sadly unlikely.

2. From the start, though I don't exactly recall a precise moment where I went "oh I like this guy". I've always appreciated his loyalty to Neal. Loyalty - even if it can lead you to do wrong things - is something of a soft spot of mine. Also, very early on, Mozzie's delightful dynamic with Peter made it always a joy to see him. They're first meeting (in episode 4) is perfect. I love that they're immediatly bonding making fun of Neal. Also during S2, when Peter and Mozzie make a pact to keep an eye on Neal, and Mozzie actually calling Peter when Neal got a gun. All those things showed Mozzie was a good friend.

14. The whole Dentist of Detroit backstory was awesome. Love that he conned the mob at a young age. Also the story he made up about his parents. That was very touching. Love that he got a soft spot for orphans because of his own story.

All very good choices. Some that are definitely among mine. I would say that the island episodes are peak White Collar. And not just for island!Neal and Kevin the bartender... ;-) (but that, too)

There's also Payback, and Dentist of Detroit, that I haven't seen mentioned, that are definitely in my top.

But there's one that I'm quite partial too: Checkmate.

White Collar is an old show that aired weekly. Except there were, at best 16 episodes over a span of 52 weeks. Which made inter-season AND mid-seasons hiatus extremely long (hence those heart-stopping cliffhangers). So, anyway, Countdown (3x10) concluded the first half of season 3 on a terrible cliffhanger - Elizabeth's kidnapping! And after one of the longest hiatuses in the history of the show (5 months!), and expectations that ran sky high in the fandoms (see all the old fics), Checkmate (3x11) finally arrived, full of promises, but with the difficult task to deliver.

And honestly, to me, it is the episode that suceeded the best in that regard. I still remember the feeling of putting it on, and starting watching. Peter's distress, slamming Neal on the wall.

This episode was exactly and everything I hoped for. The first minutes are stellar and heartbreaking, with Peter being distraught and mad at Neal. But also, Neal being there, no matter what, loyal and unwavering. Peter, Neal and Mozzie all working together to get Elizabeth back. Suspense, action, feelings, a badass El that saves herself, Keller getting the beat down he deserves, Mozzie and Peter exchanging a few heartfelt lines, a happy ending with a beautiful kiss...

Now I feel like I need to make a top 10 or something...

What are your favourite White Collar episode(s) and why?

I’ll start. My favourite episode is season 3 episode 10 Countdown, because I’m a huge fan of shenanigans. There’s just so much subterfuge and excitement packed into this one episode, I love it!

Spoiler warning, I’m going into detail under the cut.

First and foremost, the whole “throwing his fedora off the top of a building and then jumping after it, parachuting down and then picking it up and putting it back on” thing is everything to me. Like, that’s peak Neal Caffrey™️. The sheer audacity has me swooning.

That whole caper involves so much great stuff. A classic Caffrey forgery, some mind games in getting Peter to lock him in the closet, Mozzie running the technical side of things while wearing an elaborate disguise, delightful banter, a daring last-second escape that lands him right back where he started in the nick of time. It’s just *chef’s kiss* peak shenanigans.

And that’s not even all of it! There’s the whole thing with Agent Melissa Matthews from DC Art Crimes, which plays almost like psychological slapstick comedy as Neal tries to maintain the facade that he’s an Interpol agent without any of the White Collar team catching on. And it all comes crashing down at the end, but Melissa is so cool about it! I feel like she doesn’t get enough appreciation for taking it as well as she does, considering she’s an FBI agent who just got taken for quite a ride by a notorious con man. And she just gives him a respectful “well played” and peaces out! Legend behaviour. Especially compared to her boss, who’s the picture boy for sore losers LOL.

Speaking of Kramer, while he does have his annoying moments in this episode, he also has some really fun ones. His first meeting with Neal is pretty enjoyable, though I’ll admit to being biased because I adore chocolate. And the end, when Neal authenticates his own painting and then Kramer gets to plant the seed in Peter’s mind about Neal being the forger? Peter’s moment of realization is so good, it’s one of my favourite shots in the whole episode. The rest of the season didn’t quite deliver as much intrigue on that front as they seemed to promise with that moment, but they do have a fun callback in the season finale when Peter asks how Neal pulled off the switch and doesn’t believe the real answer.

My other favourite episode is 5.11 Shot Through the Heart, because the dynamics of two liars lying to each other is so delicious. But I’ll spare y’all the in-depth ramble about that one ;)

Cases of Tampered Halloween Candy

In 1959, a California dentist, William Shyne, gave candy-coated laxative pills to trick-or-treaters. He was charged with outrage of public decency and unlawful dispensing of drugs.

In 1964, a disgruntled Long Island, New York woman gave out packages of inedible objects to children who she believed were too old to be trick-or-treating. The packages contained items such as steel wool, dog biscuits, and ant buttons (which were clearly labeled with the word "poison"). Though nobody was injured, she was prosecuted and pleaded guilty to endangering children. The same year saw media reports of lye-filled bubble gum being handed out in Detroit and rat poison being given in Philadelphia, although these media reports were never substantiated to be actual events.

On Oct. 31st, 1974, neighbors O’Bryan and Jim Bates, of Deer Park, Texas, took their children out trick-or-treating. Bates’ job was to wait on the sidewalk while O’Bryan escorted the trick-or-treaters to the front door of neighborhood houses. At one point, O’Bryan disappeared briefly behind a shadowy part of the front porch, then emerged holding five large Pixie Stixx filled with flavored sugar. While no one else saw the homeowners, O’Bryan claimed that the residents of the house had cracked the door open and given him giant Pixie Styx to distribute to the children. Later that night, O’Bryan dialled 911, stating that his son had apparently eaten poisoned candy. In spite of the paramedics’ best efforts, eight year old Timothy O’Brien died later that night. An investigation revealed that the cause of death was cyanide-laced candy. The murderer? Timothy’s father, who decided to sacrifice his son in exchange for a $40,000 life insurance payoff. O'Bryan also passed the poisoned Pixie Stixx to at least four other children, including his 5-year-old daughter, Elizabeth, in an attempt to make the urban legend come to life. Miraculously the remaining tampered candy was confiscated before any other children ingested it.

Reports and copycat incidents peaked shortly after the Chicago Tylenol murders, which were first reported one month before Halloween in 1982. This incident involved a murderer who added poison to a few bottles of over-the-counter medication after the medication had been delivered to stores including possible Halloween candy tampering. 

In 2000, James Joseph Smith of Minneapolis handed out candy he had poked needles into, but none of his victims were seriously injured, with just one 14-year-old boy pricked by a needle but not badly enough to seek medical attention. As NBC News reported, Smith was charged with one count of adulterating a substance with intent to cause death, harm, or illness.

Set My Heart to Five is a satirical sf novel by Simon Stephenson in the absurdist mode of Kurt Vonnegut: it's told from the PoV of Jared, a biological robot - human body, robot brain - who works as a dentist in Ypsilanti, MI, and who has started to malfunction.

Jared's forays into old film awaken a full suite of human emotions in him, triggering the realization that he must free humanity from its genocidal anti-bot bias, and that the best way to do that is to make a movie about a heroic bot.

Lucky for him, he's got his doctor friend's old book of rules for screenwriters. He travels covertly to LA by train, buys a new identity barcode on the black market, gets a job at a taco joint, and enrolls in a screenwriting class.

Jared's story is a tale of bravery, pure hearted simplicity, and incomprehension in the face of venality, exploitation and betrayal - it's got love, humor, sacrifice and bravery.

It's a funny, breezy book that is laid out like a screenplay - its author, Simon Stephenson, is an ex-Pixar screenwriter - and has already been purchased for adaptation by Edgar Wright, best known for the Scott Pilgrim movie.

Set My Heart is meta without being insiderish, and, like Vonnegut, the simplicity disguises some sharp social satire, making this a serious book that is never dull.

Childhood: Her childhood was. . .lonely. A father and mother who worked day and sometimes night. Her Father was a cop, and her mother was a lawyer. The longest she had seen them home was when Ajax was born. Though after her mother’s maternity leave was up, Ivy and Ajax were left in the hands of their Aunt Bea. Bea was. .never really all there. She had clear signs of mental illnesses, but refused to seek help. Instead, she would drone on about her sleep paralysis experiences, her nightmares and her fears. Ivy always had a reassure Ajax that none of it was real. She needed to protect him, not make him live in fear. Ivy would get into verbal and sometimes horrible physical altercations at school, but she never got expelled because of her parents managing to keep her from trouble. She has little to no friends because of the fear she struck into other students.

Teenage: Highschool, everyone knew to stay away from her. Vidar was an exception. Vidar had met Ivy before Freshmen year, and they were inseparable, Ivy also had a friend named Yuna, who she had been friends with since diapers. Her teenage years were full of stress of maybe not graduating, Vidar disappearing, and Ivy’s first black out.

First Kill Description: As soon as his hand made contact with her, Ivy stood there in shock, the color faded from her body. She used her Karambit and jabbed it into his arm, the screams of his pain and Yuna’s terror was droned out by “Kill him” “Kill him” “Kill him”. The voice got louder and louder in her mind as she ripped the knife from his arm. He tumbled back screaming and begging for her to stop, his pleads were never heard. Ivy kicked him down onto the ground and made a deep gash in his pectoral, his screams started to sound as if someone was drowning. He was drowning in his own blood, pooling in the back of his throat. Multiple times she stabbed the blade in vital points, until nothing could be heard. The voice stopped, his screams stopped, Yuna had stopped. When Ivy regained consciousness, she just stared at her bloodied hoodie, shorts and socks. Her entire body began trembling, she couldn’t see her pale unsteady hands, they were stained with his blood. Her stomach dropped when she saw Yuna cowering from her. Her best friend was terrified of her. . .Ivy fled the scene, Karambit in hand. She left everything behind, Ajax, Yuna, Her family. A search party was put into action by her family for two years, she was never found and never will be.

HAIFA — At the Ruach Tova Health Center in this northern Israeli city, three medical students are hard at work trying to keep up with the steady flow of patients.

Nicole Kasher, a third-year student from Los Angeles, reviews patient charts. Galilee native Neta Sagi inventories pharmaceuticals. In a nearby exam room, Leonora Narkis of Petach Tikvah takes a woman’s blood pressure.

This may look like a typical Israeli medical clinic, but it’s actually one of a kind: It’s the country’s only student-run clinic, and it’s free.

The clinic is located in a densely populated, relatively indigent neighborhood of Haifa called Hadar, and staffed with medical students and faculty from the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology.

“This is the first interprofessional kind of lab in Israel, where students learn with, from and about each other,” said the center’s director, Dr. Ruti Stashefsky-Margalit, a Detroit native who is now an associate professor and director of community engagement at the Technion’s Ruth and Bruce Rappaport Faculty of Medicine. “The Technion is investing in this to create a generation of students who think differently and engage in leadership even before they’re professionals.”

Narkis, 30, says the clinic – whose Hebrew name translates as “good spirits” — gives her a chance to practice her clinical skills.

“I do my daily rotation in a hospital, where I’m totally supervised,” Narkis said. “At the clinic, I’m responsible for doing patient intake, presenting patients to the doctor, concluding patients’ visits and making sure they’re getting the best treatments they can get.”

The clinic’s mission is to serve Haifa residents who, for one reason or other, may not have access to routine health care.

About half the center’s clientele are Israeli Arabs, followed by African migrants and asylum seekers living in Israel, mainly Eritreans and Sudanese. The rest are a mix of Russians, Palestinians living in Haifa and Ethiopian non-citizens. The clinic has a phalanx of interpreters who help work with patients who speak Arabic, Russian or the Ethiopian languages of Amharic and Tigrinya.

One Ukrainian patient is a victim of sex trafficking who was kidnapped off the street in Ukraine and forcibly brought to Israel. Now recovering from drugs and alcohol, she’s married to an Israeli and has a 9-year-old child, but no access to health care.

“Despite the Israeli system of socialized medicine, about 10,000 people in Haifa and its suburbs are either uninsured or underinsured,” Margalit said. “These people are really living in poverty, without access to health care, and they’re becoming a burden on emergency rooms.”

Since the clinic’s opening in February — 200 guests attended the lavish inauguration ceremony, which featured a 40-piece orchestra — about 70 students have volunteered at the clinic. It’s open two days a week for about four hours each day, and on Thursdays the center becomes an open studio where volunteers offer art therapy classes to women affected by domestic and sexual violence.

The most common problems treated at the clinic are diabetes, hypertension, mental health issues and post-traumatic stress disorder, according to Sagi. Patients also come in for treatment with infectious diseases and alcohol-related problems.

“It’s not urgent or emergency care, and we’re not suited to be an ER,” said Sagi, who is in her sixth year of medical school. By Margalit’s estimates, the clinic has prevented some 200 ER visits, each of which costs the equivalent of about $330.

“We’re saving taxpayers a lot of money,” Sagi said.

That’s just a fringe benefit, however.

“Our goal is education first,” Margalit said. “Students are at the forefront of everything, and we — the professionals, experienced MDs —provide guidance and tight supervision. No one here enters or leaves without seeing a senior physician.”

Rawi Naddaf, 24, a third-year med student from the Israeli Arab city of Nazareth, is crucial to the center’s operation. After meeting Margalit a year ago, the two brainstormed ways they could help Haifa’s underprivileged population.

“We started researching the aspects of a student-run health center, how it’s been done in the U.S. and Canada, and trying to figure out how to adapt it here for Israel,” Naddaf said.

Tenagnework Abay, an Ethiopian-Israeli Jew who volunteers at the clinic, is fluent in Hebrew, English, her native Amharic and Tigrinya, which is spoken in northern Ethiopia and Eritrea.

“Most of the Eritreans who come to our clinic are very happy to be here. Often they don’t understand Hebrew, and they don’t know which sickness they have or what medicines to take,” Abay said. “Here, when the doctor comes in, he introduces himself and shakes their hand. They’re not used to that.”

Ruach Tova opened with $55,000 in seed money from the Boston-based Ed and Barbara Shapiro Foundation, and the center has received thousands of dollars’ worth of donated hospital equipment from computer companies, private donors and even a dentist in Nazareth. But Margalit estimates that the operating costs will be about $500,000 per year.

With increased funding, Margalit hopes to open the center a third day a week and expand opening hours. She also wants dedicated rooms for dentistry, women’s health, family medicine and other specialized needs.

“We’re putting people back on the track to health, giving them hope without judging them,” Margalit said. “There’s a sense of respect and dignity here.”
