ARC Review: How to Find a Princess by Alyssa Cole
5 stars.
I LOVED this book so much. It's definitely one of my favorite Alyssa Cole novels, which are always fantastic. As always the story was layered and thoughtful and dealt with some serious stuff, while still being a completely swoony romance novel. Makeda Hicks tries so hard to be useful and nice that she ends up pushing people away by giving too much It's lovely to see her learn to give only what she can and needs to, and learn to take things for herself too. Beznaria Chetchevaliere is a chaos agent extraordinaire and watching her in action is both hilarious and awe-inspiring. Her creative solutions to problems may be wacky, but they *work*. I loved the moment when Makeda realizes that Benzaria's entire family are chaos agents and I dearly hope we get more of the Chetchevalieres in future books. And the cargo ship crew - they were awesome as well. I'm definitely hoping for more of them in the next book. The fake-marriage and only-one-bed tropes were used so well here, and I absolutely loved the twist at the end -- caught me totally off guard. Just excellently played. I'm recommending this book to everyone who loves Alyssa Cole's works and everyone who loves romance but hasn't read any of hers yet. Seriously, what are you waiting for? This is an excellent book to start with. It ties into the previous royal romances, but you don't have to have read them to understand this one. *Thanks to NetGalley and Avon for providing an e-arc for review.

Best of Wmag.com: 17 from ‘17
Friday was my last day at W magazine. Today, I join Town & Country as its new Style Features Director. The last day was not at all as I had planned it. Instead of being in the office, I was in Pittsburgh, where my flight to New York from L.A. had been rerouted a day earlier because of the bomb cyclone. By the time I landed and got to One World Trade, it was already mid afternoon, and I didn’t have time to appreciate that it had been nearly two and a half years since I joined the magazine. In a way, it’s a perfectly fitting ending—working on the internet doesn’t leave a whole lot of time for reflection. You move fast, for long periods of time, make snap decisions, some that you regret in hindsight, others that proved prescient, and you do this ad nauseam, somehow ideally calibrating the magazine’s values with the internet’s appetites, hoping that along the way you publish good stories that will make people pause and enjoy a good piece of writing or a beautiful image. As I look back on my tenure there, it’s remarkable that in such a short period of time we grew the site’s modest audience to its size today, and that we did it, for the most part, with pride. That’s a testament to a great and tireless team of writers, editors, social media and visual wizards—some of whom I recruited from as far away as Miami!—who were dream colleagues—collaborative, funny and smart as hell. Picking my favorite pieces from the last year was not easy, but it was a reminder that all the hard work paid off.

THE GREAT UNKNOWN_CAMPAIGN_FINAL from Desirée Matthews on Vimeo.
Join an extraordinary team of women, led by Academy Award winner Olympia Dukakis, as we venture into THE GREAT UNKNOWN. A film about the sacred bond between women, this project brings the ancient, yet untold story of miscarriage into the light. Whether you’ve been transformed by this profound loss or know someone who has, you know that this is something rarely spoken of. In a time that decidedly needs the voices of women, we hope you will champion us as we bring our story into the world.
A love letter to family traditions, ritual, the feminine divine and New York City, "the great unknown" offers a deep questioning of, and eventual surrender to, the vast mysteries of life. When a young woman experiences a miscarriage, she arrives at her grandmother's door seeking a witness to her profound grief. Inspired by untold stories and ancient myth, "the great unknown" ponders how life can be breathtakingly beautiful and terribly devastating all at once. These seeming contradictions of experience and emotion tangle and intertwine to reveal two women, bonded by blood, struggling in their own journeys and witnessing each other in their fullness.

"From the Heart Productions, Inc. is honored to provide fiscal sponsorship for the film the great unknown. We carefully select the films we sponsor, and believe that this project will make a positive contribution to society and to the field of filmmaking."
Miscarriage and Pregnancy Loss
1 in 4 women will experience a miscarriage in their lifetime. Awareness, education and empathy are vital to remove the taboo and stigma associated with pregnancy loss. With this project we hope to tell an honest account of what so many women (and men) bravely endure, to invite you into the experience so that it may be embraced as a part of the natural cycle of life.
Gender Parity in Film
"Only 7% of directors, 13% of writers, and 20% of producers are female. With such a dearth of female representation in front of and behind the camera, it’s a struggle to champion female stories and voices. The Institute’s research proves that female involvement in the creative process is imperative for creating greater gender balance before production even begins. There is a causal relationship between positive female portrayals and female content creators involved in production. In fact, when even one woman writer works on a film, there is a 10.4% difference in screen time for female characters. Sadly, men outnumber women in key production roles by nearly 5 to 1."
- Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media
The great unknown will be made by a cast and crew composed entirely of women.
