Desertion, abandonment, and cruelty: The story of three Packard divorcees
From page 8 of “100 Years of Marriage and Divorce: Statistics [of the] United States, 1867-1967” published by the Public Health Service in December 1973.In my post last month, I focused on three Packard women (i.e. women who married into the Packard family, in this case) who divorced their husbands, specifically Lovina Jennie Rock, Ruey E. Eitnier, and Edna Meyers. There are many more I could…

Solid, 1928 brick fixer-upper in Benton Harbor, MI has 4bds, 2ba, and some very unique features. It was reduced $10K to $69,900. Let's take a look inside and see what needs to be done. Outside, we can see that it needs new stairs and the wood trim needs tending to. Roof looks okay.
Back of the house. It's going to need some leaders and gutters.
2 car garage doesn't look too bad. Looks like it needs a window pane.
This little building is adorable, but it's really been neglected. Needs some replacement fencing, too. 6,969 sq ft lot.
Some work has been done. Looks like new flooring.
Definitely new floors, and look at the doorways. Interesting.
Has a nice sun porch.
Looks like they put up some new drywall and painted it gray.
Two closets and a window seat.
That's interesting, a round hole in the wall. Are the doorways meant to be a little off-center?
Kitchen needs new flooring. One thing about those dated cabinets, is that they're sturdy. I would keep them, at least for now, and maybe paint them. Maybe not, maybe just refresh them.
One of the bedrooms with a closet.
Another bedroom.
This bath is yucky. I would say total gut.
These stairs are weird.
They've got the fridge stored in here and there's the 2nd bath.
Actually, the sinks look salvageable.
Tub and toilet look okay. Just needs a new seat.
The basement is the most interesting place and has potential. It's got good natural light.
This looks fairly new, but why is it missing the panel.
A lone built-in desk? Weird.
Now, here's your indoor pool. According to the real estate description, " Yes this is that house with the little pool in the basement! Solid, Sturdy and Sound they definitely don't make them like this anymore." I agree- it is little. But, it's unique.

Carole Yvonne Wingo, 22 (USA 1974)
22-year-old Carole Yvonne Wingo came to Mercy General Hospital in Detroit for a legal abortion.
Despite its misleading name, Mercy General Hospital or MGH wasn’t a general hospital at all. It was an abortion facility and it was already in serious trouble with the Michigan Public Department of Health. In October of 1973, MGH was cited for 43 violations of nursing standards and 12 violations of physical plant standards(meaning standards of room setups, functional plumbing etc.) in October of 1973. Even the operating room lacked a cardiac monitor, a resuscitator and a defibrillator. The Michigan Public Department of Health withheld MGH’s license that October.
But Carole didn’t know that. She’d been told that Roe v. Wade made abortion “safe and legal”, so she trusted MGH with her safety. On July 22, 1974, abortionists at MGH overdosed her with a lethal amount of Demerol. Carole's mother filed a lawsuit against the facility and employees David Northcross, Chuk Nwokedi, and Robert Wolf.

EGLE at youth fishing events this summer focusing on assessing fish contaminants
Source: EGLE newsroom
The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) was awarded a $600,000 grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to assess contaminants in fish in several areas of Michigan -- with a particular focus on water bodies where youth fishing events have historically or are currently taking place.
Brandon Armstrong, EGLE aquatic biology specialist, filets a rainbow trout for a successful angler at the Wayne County Parks youth fishing derby at Waterford Bend Recreation Area in Northville.
The primary goal of EGLE’s Fish Contaminant Monitoring Program is to collect data that are used to inform the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services’ Eat Safe Fish guide. This grant helps EGLE meet this goal by providing funds to assess contaminants in fish from water bodies nearby communities that may be disproportionately impacted by environmental hazards, often referred to as Environmental Justice areas. EGLE will be attending youth fishing events near these areas to collect samples for contaminant monitoring.
Upcoming events include:
The Public Safety Youth Derby at Muskegon Lake in Muskegon, from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 15.
The Buell Lake Fish Camp at Buell Lake Park in Clio from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, June 16.
The Brighton Optimist Club Derby at Brighton Mill Pond in Brighton from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 17.
The Global Water Festival at Canal Park in Grand Rapids from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, July 29.
The Thread Lake Fish Camp at Thread Lake’s McKinley Park in Flint from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, August 11.
Events that already have taken place as part of the grant are:
Wayne County Parks Derby at Waterford Bend Park in Northville.
Saginaw County Parks’ Catch Me If You Can family fishing festival at Haithco Lake in Saginaw Charter Township.
The Hesse-Earl Youth Fishing Program at Hawk Island Park in Ingham County.
Fish will also be collected under this grant from additional water bodies located near Environmental Justice areas including Reflection Pond in Riverview, Spring Valley Pond in Kalamazoo, Richmond Park Pond in Grand Rapids, Battjes Park Pond in Wyoming, Galloway Lake, Osmun Lake and the Clinton River in Pontiac, Muskegon Lake and Little Black Creek in Muskegon, WmP Thompson Pond in Port Huron, Carpenter Lake in Southfield, the St. Joseph River and the Paw Paw River in Benton Harbor, and the St. Marys River in Sault Ste Marie.

Leona D. "Lee" Brakla, 96, went to be with her Lord on Aug. 20, 2023, at the home of her daughter, Shari Payne, St. Joseph.
Lee was born in Watertown, Wis., to Herman and Ella (Prillwitz) Glaske.
About one year later, the family moved to the St. Joseph and Benton Harbor area where she lived all of her life.
After graduating from Benton Harbor High School and one year at Bob Jones College, Lee worked for A.B. Morss printers for many years. Then she worked at Berrien County Intermediate School District in REMC's media department, where she retired in 1991.
On Nov. 29, 1947, she married Don Brakla. They had a daughter, Shari, and a son, Mark.
Lee accepted the Lord as her Savior at age 13, and loved and served Him all her adult life wherever she could; teaching Sunday school, singing in the choir and playing the piano and organ wherever there was a need. She had a large perennial garden and for more than 40 years, provided large floral arrangements for the church sanctuary. She always thanked Him for the beauty in nature He has given us to enjoy!
Don and Lee enjoyed golfing, and spending vacations traveling on their Harley, pulling a pop-up camper, visiting almost all of the states in the country. In the mid-60s, Don's work transferred him to Ashville, N.C. for three years. For several of those years, Lee was blessed with the opportunity to work at The Biltmore House in the floral design department, where she made floral arrangements of all shapes and sizes to decorate the house. How she enjoyed that time and always thanked God for giving her that opportunity.
Lee was preceded in death by her parents; brothers: Don and Paul Glaske; sister, Helen Wentworth; son, Mark; and granddaughter, Kathy Patterson.
She is survived by daughter, Shari Payne; daughter-in-law, Pat Brakla of Grand Rapids, Mich.; five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.
A celebration of life service will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 26, with Pastor Maynard Schoen officiating at Starks & Menchinger Chapel & Cremation Services, 2650 Niles Road, St. Joseph. Friends and family may visit with Leona's family on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of service at the funeral home. Private burial will be at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may made to New Community Church WM Arts Dept, 2340 Dean Lake Ave., N.E. Grand Rapids, MI 49505 or American Macular Degeneration Foundation, P.O. Box 515, Northampton, MA 1061-0515.

I would rather have a house like this, that hasn’t been remodeled, is inexpensive and I could preserve it. It’s a 1930 Italian Turret home in Benton Harbor, Michigan, w/4bds. & 2.5 ba., listed for $249K.
Enter thru the turret- very cool. It kind of reminds me of Tudor style, too. It appears to be a deferred maintenance situation.
This is very nice- it’s something different.
To the left is a large living room with beautiful double doors, arches, and a stucco fireplace. This could be beautiful with the right furniture and some color on the walls.
The sunroom has ample heating to make a good conservatory or 4 season room.
Cute dining room with 2 built-in corner cabinets. I like the printed carpet and matching valance.
Definitely original cabinetry. I would keep it, especially b/c it’s pink.
Oh, no, they wallpapered over plaster walls - you can see the texture thru it. There’s a laundry chute- that’s cool.
This must be the half bath.
Must be the main bd. with an en suite.
Looks like a 60s upgrade.
This bath is nicer, it’s original. The tile is unique and very attractive.
Surprised to find a walk-in closet/dressing room.
Turret room. Very cool.
Cool knotty pine basement.
Looks like the kids have a craft area down here. Love the fireplace and built-ins, though.
That’s neat, a round deck.
3 car garage with side storage and .72 acre yard. Very nice, I like this one.
