Desertion, abandonment, and cruelty: The story of three Packard divorcees
From page 8 of “100 Years of Marriage and Divorce: Statistics [of the] United States, 1867-1967” published by the Public Health Service in December 1973.In my post last month, I focused on three Packard women (i.e. women who married into the Packard family, in this case) who divorced their husbands, specifically Lovina Jennie Rock, Ruey E. Eitnier, and Edna Meyers. There are many more I could…

Solid, 1928 brick fixer-upper in Benton Harbor, MI has 4bds, 2ba, and some very unique features. It was reduced $10K to $69,900. Let's take a look inside and see what needs to be done. Outside, we can see that it needs new stairs and the wood trim needs tending to. Roof looks okay.
Tumblr media
Back of the house. It's going to need some leaders and gutters.
Tumblr media
2 car garage doesn't look too bad. Looks like it needs a window pane.
Tumblr media
This little building is adorable, but it's really been neglected. Needs some replacement fencing, too. 6,969 sq ft lot.
Tumblr media
Some work has been done. Looks like new flooring.
Tumblr media
Definitely new floors, and look at the doorways. Interesting.
Tumblr media
Has a nice sun porch.
Tumblr media
Looks like they put up some new drywall and painted it gray.
Tumblr media
Two closets and a window seat.
Tumblr media
That's interesting, a round hole in the wall. Are the doorways meant to be a little off-center?
Tumblr media
Kitchen needs new flooring. One thing about those dated cabinets, is that they're sturdy. I would keep them, at least for now, and maybe paint them. Maybe not, maybe just refresh them.
Tumblr media
One of the bedrooms with a closet.
Tumblr media
Another bedroom.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This bath is yucky. I would say total gut.
Tumblr media
These stairs are weird.
Tumblr media
They've got the fridge stored in here and there's the 2nd bath.
Tumblr media
Actually, the sinks look salvageable.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tub and toilet look okay. Just needs a new seat.
Tumblr media
The basement is the most interesting place and has potential. It's got good natural light.
Tumblr media
This looks fairly new, but why is it missing the panel.
Tumblr media
A lone built-in desk? Weird.
Tumblr media
Now, here's your indoor pool. According to the real estate description, " Yes this is that house with the little pool in the basement! Solid, Sturdy and Sound they definitely don't make them like this anymore." I agree- it is little. But, it's unique.

Carole Yvonne Wingo, 22 (USA 1974)
22-year-old Carole Yvonne Wingo came to Mercy General Hospital in Detroit for a legal abortion.
Tumblr media
Despite its misleading name, Mercy General Hospital or MGH wasn’t a general hospital at all. It was an abortion facility and it was already in serious trouble with the Michigan Public Department of Health. In October of 1973, MGH was cited for 43 violations of nursing standards and 12 violations of physical plant standards(meaning standards of room setups, functional plumbing etc.) in October of 1973. Even the operating room lacked a cardiac monitor, a resuscitator and a defibrillator. The Michigan Public Department of Health withheld MGH’s license that October.
But Carole didn’t know that. She’d been told that Roe v. Wade made abortion “safe and legal”, so she trusted MGH with her safety. On July 22, 1974, abortionists at MGH overdosed her with a lethal amount of Demerol. Carole's mother filed a lawsuit against the facility and employees David Northcross, Chuk Nwokedi, and Robert Wolf.

EGLE at youth fishing events this summer focusing on assessing fish contaminants
Source: EGLE newsroom
The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) was awarded a $600,000 grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to assess contaminants in fish in several areas of Michigan -- with a particular focus on water bodies where youth fishing events have historically or are currently taking place.
Tumblr media
Brandon Armstrong, EGLE aquatic biology specialist, filets a rainbow trout for a successful angler at the Wayne County Parks youth fishing derby at Waterford Bend Recreation Area in Northville.
The primary goal of EGLE’s Fish Contaminant Monitoring Program is to collect data that are used to inform the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services’ Eat Safe Fish guide. This grant helps EGLE meet this goal by providing funds to assess contaminants in fish from water bodies nearby communities that may be disproportionately impacted by environmental hazards, often referred to as Environmental Justice areas. EGLE will be attending youth fishing events near these areas to collect samples for contaminant monitoring.
Upcoming events include:
The Public Safety Youth Derby at Muskegon Lake in Muskegon, from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 15.
The Buell Lake Fish Camp at Buell Lake Park in Clio from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, June 16.
The Brighton Optimist Club Derby at Brighton Mill Pond in Brighton from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 17.
The Global Water Festival at Canal Park in Grand Rapids from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, July 29.
The Thread Lake Fish Camp at Thread Lake’s McKinley Park in Flint from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, August 11.
Events that already have taken place as part of the grant are:
Wayne County Parks Derby at Waterford Bend Park in Northville.
Saginaw County Parks’ Catch Me If You Can family fishing festival at Haithco Lake in Saginaw Charter Township.
The Hesse-Earl Youth Fishing Program at Hawk Island Park in Ingham County.
Fish will also be collected under this grant from additional water bodies located near Environmental Justice areas including  Reflection Pond in Riverview, Spring Valley Pond in Kalamazoo, Richmond Park Pond in Grand Rapids, Battjes Park Pond in Wyoming, Galloway Lake, Osmun Lake and the Clinton River in Pontiac, Muskegon Lake and Little Black Creek in Muskegon, WmP Thompson Pond in Port Huron, Carpenter Lake in Southfield, the St. Joseph River and the Paw Paw River in Benton Harbor, and the St. Marys River in Sault Ste Marie.

Ibba May Glaske, BJU Class of 1951.
Ibba May (Danley) Glaske, 95, of Stevensville passed away peacefully of natural causes with a close friend at her side on Monday, July 22, 2024, at Pine Ridge Rehabilitation & Nursing Center, Stevensville.
A celebration of life for Ibba will be at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 3, at First Baptist Church, 902 Broad St., St. Joseph, MI, with Pastor Marlo Fritzke officiating. A private burial will be prior to the celebration of life in Spring Run Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, please make memorial contributions to Quiz-Time Systems, 252 E. Napier Ave., Benton Harbor, MI 49022, quiztime.com, for the manufacture and distribution of quiz boxes. Those wishing to leave an online condolence may do so at www.starks-menchinger.com.
Ibba May (Danley) Glaske was born on Dec. 30, 1928, in Moberly, Mo. Her family moved to Winchester, Va., when she was 6 years old and grew up there.
She graduated from Bob Jones University and received a bachelor of science degree in art education with a minor in English on May 30, 1951. She met her future husband, Don Glaske, there and they were married on Dec. 20, 1948. Don received his bachelor of science degree in business administration with a minor in history on Sept. 1, 1951 and they moved to Benton Harbor.
Ibba taught the fifth-grade class at Baroda Elementary School for one year, then three years at Bard School in Benton Harbor, and finally taught art for 16 years with St. Joseph Public Schools, grades 1-6, in six buildings, 72 classrooms, and 2,700 students total. During this time, she also attended Western Michigan University and received a masters degree in art. She was an accomplished artist, was a member of Krasl Art Center since 1987, and was still submitting art to the center in 2022 to display. She also was accomplished in chalk drawing.
In 1954, Don and Ibba started Berrien County Youth for Christ (YFC). They had monthly rallies with hundreds in attendance, meeting at the Benton Harbor High School auditorium for many years, then later at Watervliet and Bridgman high school auditoriums. They emphasized Bible memory and Bible quizzing (competition answering Bible questions).
In 1974, they changed the name from YFC to CYM (Christian Youth Ministries). Ibba did all the artwork for the rally brochures, quiz brochures and the large stage backdrop for the rallies. In 1961, Don designed and began manufacturing quiz boxes that had lights and seat switches to show which quizzer jumped first, for jumpstyle competition Bible quizzing. They have sold thousands of quiz boxes around the world.
Don was diagnosed with brain cancer in 1987 and died in 1988. After his death, Ibba was able to figure out each step of the manufacturing process and continued to run the Quiz-Time Systems business, manufacturing quiz boxes the rest of her life. Recently, the business was passed on to Jim Krieger to continue the legacy.
She was a longtime member of Delta Kappa Gamma RHO Chapter, leading women educators impacting education worldwide, and also been a faithful member of First Baptist Church in St. Joseph since 1949. Ibba had a wonderful smile, a joyful spirit, and was such a steadfast friend to many. She will be greatly missed.
