Mimi's Endless Ocs
↳Re-Introducing Stranger Things Oc: Benjamin Hopper
Series: An 80s Mixtape:
Book One: Crazy Train [Revamped Chapter One coming soon!]
Summary:
Benjamin Lee Hopper was born on July 4th,1967. He was a product of a one-night stand between a woman named Ellen and his father Jim Hopper. He first met his dad when he was only two weeks old after being left on his dad's front porch with a note from his mother claiming he didn’t want him.
As Ben got older, he started having weird dreams, most of the time it would have been shrugged off by his dad and then stepmother Diane as it being a normal child having vivid dreams. But then the dreams started turning into nightmares right before his little sister Sarah got sick. His parents couldn’t pay much attention to Ben at that point since they were focused on trying to get Sarah well, but then she ended up dying.
The nightmares had gotten worse after that. It ended up getting to the point where one terrifying night on September 7th,1979 his dad rushed him to the doctor to help get rid of them.
It had worked for a while but years later, in 1983, Ben's dreams were back. He was dreaming of a girl in a hospital gown and then Will screaming right before he went missing.
Every year after that… the dreams would get worse and worse, with different monsters and threats to his friends and family.

Weekend Top Ten #481
Top Ten Pixar Villains
Those rascals and rapscallions at Pixar are famous for twisting our emotions, aren’t they? Perverse masters at making us cry with sadness or joy, often at the same time (I’m looking at you, Inside Out, with your yellow and blue marbles). Oh yes, they’ll stick the knife in and give it a good old yank, like John Travolta teaches his daughter to do in Face/Off when he’s not really John Travolta and it’s a bit icky but then she stabs him at the end of the film so it’s alright really.
Where was I?
Oh yeah. Pixar, renowned for turning grown men into blubbering messes, mostly because an adult character was convinced to part with old toys he no longer plays with. But I’d argue that one thing they’ve done less well than their parent studio (that’s Disney) is crafting iconic baddies. I mean, we all know the Disney Villains; they’re so iconic and successful as pop culture icons that there’s an entire trilogy of movies based on what would happen if a bunch of them had kids (apparently they’d sing a lot). Pixar baddies though? Hmmm, maybe not quite so iconic. I can’t see someone making a live action prequel movie about Chef Skinner.
But that’s not to say they’re not great; in fact, rather than going down the route of snarling, moustache-twirling villainy, Pixar actually does a great job in creating antagonists instead. Sometimes they’re misunderstood; sometimes they’re not the person you thought they were! Quite often some kind of redemption is offered, and the villains are very, very rarely dropped off something tall. A lot of them aren’t even defeated, so to speak! A good deal of nuance and shade goes into a Pixar villain, and if they haven’t made as many all-time-great iconic ne’er-do-wells, it does seem as if their approach is starting to rub off on Disney mothership (the likes of Frozen II and Moana either don’t have, or at least subvert, the notion of all-powerful bad guys).
So what do we have? Well, hopefully, we’ve got a list of really cool villains from Pixar movies. most of them are presented as the film’s “big bad”, although there are a couple of lesser baddies. And I think we do see the pattern emerging, of more mundane levels of villainy; the selfish and greedy and damaged. It makes for great characterisation and some beautiful storytelling; some complex and pitiable characters. And, yes, a few absolute bastards too. Let’s tut disapprovingly.
Lots-o-Huggin’ Bear (Ned Beatty, Toy Story 3, 2010): a superb performance from Beatty as a seemingly nice, jovial old bear who’s really a manipulative, power-hungry, gaslighting bully. Realistically portrayed as damaged and bitter, he has a tragic backstory that feels real, and a sense of pain and loss that feels earned in this universe. Questions the nature of everything the movies are about, and is a genuine threat in more ways than one. Plus he literally leaves them all to die in the furnace!
Syndrome (Jason Lee, The Incredibles, 2004): Buddy Pine’s backstory is one of belittlement and rejection, so his switch to villainy is as well explored as many a comic book bad guy. But he’s interesting partly in what his character says about Mr. Incredible – in a way justifying the criticisms of superheroes, as Mr. I does ignore the admittedly-annoying Buddy rather than mentoring or respecting him – but also because he prefigures notions of toxic masculinity about a decade or so before they became, well, a threat to global democracy.
Al (Wayne Knight, Toy Story 2, 1999): Like how Lots-o can be seen as a dark examination of toy life (all toys are replaceable, kids don’t really love you, etc), Al also shows us another dark facet of toy-dom: namely the life of a “collectable”. Toys, in this world, want to be played with, preferably by children, so a big ol’ man-child who stores them in boxes or puts them on display is not ideal. It’s an inversion of what a toy is for; an object of joy reduced to a commodity. Is it entertainment versus art? Who can say? Also, he’s really just a massive jerk and a huge slob, so we feel no pity for him once he gets his comeuppance at the end of the film.
Sid Phillips (Erik von Detten, Toy Story, 1995): man, they nailed the Toy Story villains, didn’t they? Maybe there’s even more to come! But right out of the gate, Sid was a classic. An utter sadist in a skull t-shirt, torturing toys for kicks; adults can see the traits of a genuine sociopath (some serial killers start by torturing animals, remember!), and he’s portrayed like a character in a horror movie. Seriously, in 1995, Sid’s room was legitimately disturbing. I’m not sure what moral lessons his actions teach us, but just as a pure article of terror, he’s supreme.
Hopper (Kevin Spacey, A Bug’s Life, 1998): it feels a bit weird, if I’m honest, to celebrate a Spacey performance. But as a character, Hopper is excellent, one of the best things about the generally-overlooked-but-still-a-bit-lesser-Pixar Bug’s Life. Riffing on biker gangs, Hopper’s locust swarm in, revving their wings. Hopper’s a classic tough guy thug, dominating through violence and threat; a creature with a small amount of power determined to hold onto it, and ultimately eaten by a terrifying bird. Just don’t look at the cast list.
Ernesto de la Cruz (Benjamin Bratt, Coco, 2017): after the horror of Sid and the thuggery of Hopper, de la Cruz is a different, more insidious villain. He’s a thief and a betrayer who exploited and murdered his best friend, condemning him not just to death but to a forgotten obsolescence in the afterlife. He’s a perfect example of the gaslighting, friendly-seeming bad guy, more in the mould of Lots-o, but with the world on his side and a sweet guitar. Genuinely hissable.
Stinky Pete (Kelsey Grammar, Toy Story 2, 1999): what, more Toy Story? Well, yeah. Don’t blame me, blame Pixar. And so Stinky Pete; a far more relatable and understandable villain, one driven to desperation through a lifetime of rejection and broken promises. Unlike the Machiavellian, power-hungry Lots-o, Pete just wants everyone to retire quietly together; he can’t accept the risks of freedom and only becomes sneaky and, indeed, violent after all else fails. But he does kinda get a happy ending, even if he doesn’t realise it; this is a villain who I feel could eventually be redeemed.
Randall Boggs (Steve Buscemi, Monsters, Inc., 2001): Waternoose is the real baddy in Monsters, Inc., of course; a conniving capitalist who’s prepared to sacrifice the world’s children to keep his monopoly. But it’s Randy who sticks in the mind; his selfish, vain lackey, a monster with a huge chip on his shoulder. His design – lizard-like, snake-ish, with a huge mouth and invisibility – is seriously disturbing. Hearing Buscemi’s voice come from that form – an aggravated teacher, a furious accountant – adds something special, something darkly hilarious.
Evelyn Deavor (Catherine Keener, Incredibles 2, 2018): visually and conceptually, The Screenslaver (great name) is pretty cool, but when it’s revealed that the Big Bad is really under-appreciated tech genius Evelyn, that’s a great twist. A smart woman propping up her schmoozing brother, her criticisms of the heroes – like Buddy Pine’s – have resonance, although she’s learning the wrong lessons from tragedy. Her relationship with Elastigirl, from friendship to enmity, is very well-written and performed, and her belligerence at the end is a nice touch, denying the heroes of any catharsis from her capture.
Shelby Forthright (Fred Willard, WALL-E, 2008): I was originally going to feature the autopilot, but then I figured, if you can get Fred Willard in your list… and really, who’s the big villain here? It’s us, right? We killed the Earth. But Willard’s smiling, happy CEO is there, encouraging his customers to buy, promising them safety and security, promising them a repaired world… but really he’s shovelling them off the planet, secretly commanding the computer to take humanity far away and never look back. It’s a devious, horrible plan, giving the people unending luxury, making them want for nothing, turning them into fab, soporific blobs, basically because that’s easier than the alternative. It’s a horrible indictment of humanity (also: he’s the CEO of a company, but also – it looks like – that makes him rule the world? Creepy). So, yeah, the autopilot might be a baddun, but it’s the man in charge who’s the real villain of the piece, even hundreds of years later.
Sadly no room for John Lasseter, who may not have tried to enslave humanity or torture children, but still managed to be a huge jerk and a phenomenal disappointment.

That OC name post I reblogged got me thinking and also I’m procrastinating hardcore
So here for your viewing pleasure (and your schadenfreude and, I don’t know, knowledge that your middle-school OCs’ names weren’t the worst?) is as many of my middle-school OCs as I can find on my computer. This is by no means all of the OCs I created in middle school; in fact, this may be barely half of them.
I know that the worst one of the bunch is missing but I’ve literally blocked her name from my memory (I can remember exactly which notebook she’s in and exactly where in my room that notebook is and exactly how terrible her story was but I can’t remember her name and I’m currently 501 miles away from my room)
•Alea Jodeen Raynerson (Harry Potter)
•Alexandrine Keisha Winfield (Supernatural)
•Aradhana Gadhavi (one of 4 characters of color I created during this time period 😬—Harry Potter)
•Arianna (Supernatural)
•Benjamin Samuel Russell (A dragon-themed ChickenSmoothie RP)
•Casey Renee Altair (the TV show Scorpion)
•Cassiopeia Joan Reid (Doctor Who)
•Catarina Rowanne Mallory (I don’t remember)
•Catharine Richardson (Harry Potter—I really like to riff on the name Catherine, don’t I?)
•Catriona D’Onofrio (Harry Potter)
•Charlotte Solene Quick (I think CotIG? Idk)
•Chrisabel Luisella Krauss (Harry Potter)
•Ciera Martin (Harry Potter)
•Claire Elizabeth Ashdown (I don’t remember)
•Dante Lee Hawk (original story)
•Emmett Wickham (original story)
•Enola Avalon Solomon (BBC Sherlock)
•Erika Christine Leroux (first for an Avengers fanfic, then technically for an original superhero story, but you KNOW she had a Phantom of the Opera theme going on)
•Evelina Fern Low (I don’t remember, but she has wings, so either Marvel or Supernatural)
•Frida Theadottir (Marvel)
•Gideon Pace (Harry Potter)
•Grace/Griffin Press (original-ish story—with crossdressing to get into the army! Revolutionary)
•Hanna Burnham (orignal story, which I might actually improve and finish someday; the fundamental concept wasn’t half-bad)
•Iris Regalia Moran (I think a pirate RP on ChickenSmoothie?)
•Jamie Ciara Callaghan (Marvel—this is the third character with wings and we’re only on J)
•Jared Mason Baker (I don’t remember)
•Jennifer Marie Baker (Yes they’re siblings and actually I do remember this was a superpower high school RP on ChickenSmoothie)
•Joshua Richard Green (original story)
•Julia Aryana Thalia Parker (Marvel—winged character #4)
•Julia Phoebe Holmes (BBC Sherlock—I seem to have had a thing for making OCs related to established characters—I’m told that wasn’t as unique as I’d thought it was)
•Kendall Ethelinda Rowe (I remember this was for ChickenSmoothie, but I don’t remember what the RP was; I just remember she had the ability to create and manipulate smoke)
•Kyrie Nora-Jane Adeodata Casper (Supernatural)
•Lily Serena Weekes (Marvel—character of color #2)
•Loranos, who also went by Athena DeWitt (Doctor Who and a feature in a SuperWho fanfic I wrote—gag)
•Mark Hopper (original story)
•Marsha Jan Tillik (character of color #3; I don’t remember for what fandom)
•Mary Peter (original story)
•Miyu Patil (Marvel—character of color #4)
•Moira Andromeda Byrne (Harry Potter—a werewolf turned by—*gasp*—Remus Lupin)
•Ophelia (given the one-name shtick, I’m guessing she’s one of my many Quirky The-Doctor’s-Long-Lost-Sister characters but I don’t recall)
•Page Bannerman (original story)
•Phoebe Amelia Brigham (my first CotIG OC! And one of about a thousand Phoebes)
•Phoebe Rachelle DeLaney (Supernatural)
•Phoenix Gallagher (original story)
•Robin Tempest Pierce (Supernatural)
•Saga Verandi (Harry Potter)
•Sigrid Lokidottir (sigh)
•Stephanie Grace Banner (Marvel—yes, that Banner)
•Talia Ophelia Gabriel (Marvel—what was it with me and the names Talia/Thalia, Ophelia, and Phoebe?)
•Tanya Marjory Underhill (Marvel)
•Tawny Benedict (original story)
•Violet Rossana Victor (Marvel)
•Virginia Joan Hathaway (Jekyll and Hyde, of all things)
•Vivienne Guenievre Verne (a CotIG/Doctor Who crossover fic I regret writing—and yes, that Verne—I went to the trouble of researching how far down his family line went to make sure it was plausible for her to be his great-great granddaughter or whatever)
•Will Atkins (original story)
•Willow Thomas (BBC Sherlock, and I think Supernatural too)
•Xavia Hermione Starr (Harry Potter—I wasn’t even subtle, good Lord)
•Xavia Wilson (original story—not one, but TWO Xavias—ffs)
And finally, the very epitome of my OC-naming whatever-the-hell-you-call-this,
Adelaide Arwen Athalia Brigitta Philomena Sapphira Thea Auttenberg (Marvel).
I am so sorry I subjected y’all to this.

ANDY CARES A LOT ABOUT THE NAMING OF A BUILDING AT HIS ALMA MATER.
This is a full meal of a story. It involves performative allyship, online activism, a bad man who supported gay conversion therapy and white nationalists, a funny scholarship situation, body slamming, IRL activism, diversity and inclusivity, financial conflict of interest, Title IX failure, and the first student demonstration in the history of a small, conservative STEM university.
APRIL 2017: In his final semester at Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, NJ, Andy, along with humanities alums Joe Risi and Kyle Gonzalez, petitioned the university president, Nariman Farvardin, about the naming of a future academic complex. The building intended to honor Greg Gianforte, an alumnus and then-congressional candidate for Montana who promised two $10 million gifts to the university. He also was known to support pseudoscience, gay conversion therapy, and white nationalists, businesses that discriminated against LGBTQ folks, and believed that allowing transpeople using bathrooms “[places] young girls' and women's safety at risk,” among other bad things. It was later revealed that not only did Farvardin donate to the Gianforte congressional campaign but that several other members of Stevens’s Board of Trustees did as well in the same month the naming was announced.
The three of them – Andy as a current student and alums Joe and Kyle – received advisement from then-professor of Science and Technology Studies, Lee Vinsel and a group of Montana State University folk who had previously protested naming a building named after Gianforte at MSU. Andy, Joe, and Kyle wrote a petition that asked directly and simply for three things: to explain the reasoning behind naming the new academic center after Gianforte, to condemn the discriminatory rhetoric of the anti-LGBTQ groups who had received donations from Greg Gianforte, and to reaffirm Stevens’ commitment, in actions and not just words, to be an inclusive campus regardless of race, gender, or sexual orientation. Seemed like a slam dunk of a much-needed PR opportunity. When Andy brought this up at an open meeting of the Student Government Association (SGA), though, he left not too hopeful that things would change. His fellow Students seemed apathetic as well.
But, despite a ton of exhausting far-right reply guys bemoaning PC culture and asking Andy and company to engage in “thought experiments” to point out logical fallacies, the petition got over 650+ signatures --almost a fourth of the undergraduate population that year -- and loads of great comments.
Stevens’ president, in lieu of the petition’s requests, responded privately to several professors. His response, the private nature of which was dismissive and disrespectful to those who cared enough to sign the petition, brought up more questions than answers. Similarly, the then-SGA president wrote an insulting response. The three petition writers went to a "Conversation with the President” on April 18th, closed but for staff and faculty, asking Farvardin in front of those attending for an explanation of the reasoning behind naming the new academic center after Gianforte, a condemnation of discriminatory rhetoric of the anti-LGBTQ groups who had received donations from Greg Gianforte, and a reaffirmation of Stevens’ commitment, in actions and not just words, to be an inclusive campus regardless of race, gender, or sexual orientation. Farvardin’s response was. Farvardin’s public response then was as unsatisfactory as his private response (Here’s some audio).
MAY 2017: During Andy’s final semester at Stevens, he was awarded the Joseph M. Farber Memorial Prize, presented to a graduating humanities senior who “displays a keen interest in and concern for civil liberties and their importance in preserving human rights“ for the Gianforte work. It was a pretty nice consolation prize for being a bit disheartened (and, well, Dead from all the thesis work).
The same day Andy walked across the commencement stage to graduate, Gianforte, uh, forced his way into national news. Assaulting a Guardian reporter on the eve of a special election to fill Montana’s sole seat in the US House of Representatives will do that. This changed some minds on campus.
JUNE 2017: Following the body-slam heard ’round the world – along with a lackluster Alumni Weekend – Farvardin and Virginia Ruesterholz, chairman of the Stevens Board of Trustees, established a Committee to Consider the Naming of the Gianforte Academic Center, picking alumni, faculty, and members of the Board of Trustees (again, several of whom, Ruesterholz and Farvardin included, had donated to the Gianforte political campaign). This committee announced on June 26th that its goal was to "come together, use our collective wisdom, sound judgment, and best reasoning to identify a path forward that is consistent with the mission and values of Stevens." A handful of concerned Hoboken citizens started their own petition. Stevens literature professor Benjamin H. Ogden got a letter published in the NY Daily News criticizing the naming. Gianforte was found guilty for his assault of the reporter; his mugshot was later released.
AUGUST 2017: Nine more students and alumni joined Joe, Kyle, and Andy to start an informative, persuasive online and IRL campaign, entitled “#iwillnotSITby,” for folks to email members of the aforementioned committee, submit feedback, and share their thoughts on social media. According to bit.ly data, more than 150 folks clicked through the website to the committee’s feedback form. Not that bad.
SEPTEMBER 2017: Stevens organizations -- including Stevens Torch Alliance, the Stevens Faculty Senate, Stevens Poetry Club, Stevens Society of Physics Students, WCPR - Castle Point Radio, and Chi Phi - Mu Chapter -- began to publicly denounce Gianforte’s views and encouraged the renaming of the building. The university’s sketch-and-improv comedy group had some fun with it.
On September 27th, Professor Emeritus James McClellan III presented a talk entitled "What's Wrong with Scientific Creationism?" discussing creationism as a pseudoscience and how it related to Gianforte and Stevens. Despite being a part of Stevens regular humanities forums, it was initially not advertised by the administration and staff, leading students to create and distribute flyers. The College of Arts and Letters later announced the talk -- with the caveat that it did not reflect the full views of the college nor university.
On September 28th, Farvardin made a campus-wide announcement: The committee submitted their findings to the Board of Trustees, the latter of which decided to rename the complex the Gianforte Family Academic Complex, based partly on the idea of “principal legacy,” which was used in Yale’s consideration behind the renaming of Calhoun College, originally named after a slavery advocate, to honor graduate Grace Murray Hopper, a computer scientist, mathematician, teacher, and dedicated public servant.
Included in any dictionary published after August 2017, next to the definition of “a bad idea,” was the initial naming of the Gianforte Academic Center. Following the committee’s decision, a referral was added, referencing the definition of “a really bad idea,” and included the renaming of the Gianforte Family Academic Complex with the reasoning below:
The new naming recalls the Gianforte Family Foundation, which names both Greg Gianforte and Susan Gianforte as trustees. As both Mr. and Mrs. Gianforte are active voices in deciding who benefits from the foundations’ various donations, any building that references the Gianforte Family name invokes the hateful rhetoric given a platform through their monetary contributions
The Yale decision to rename a college because of Calhoun’s principal legacy of white supremacy was made a full seven months before the Stevens committee made theirs
The Gianforte Family Foundation donated to white supremacists Taylor Rose in 2015 and Robert Saunders in 2016
Stevens’ actions to decide the “principal legacy” of a living alumnus is at odds with Yale’s definition of “principal legacy,” which was strictly applied to deceased alumni
More reasoning can be found via Kyle Gonzalez’s detailed rebuttal, sent to the president and Board of Trustees following the committee’s recommendations. Again, because the naming was ultimately decided by Gianforte campaign contributors, their peers, and an SGA president who did not think a change can be made, concerned community members were not entirely surprised by this outcome.
A GoFundMe campaign was launched a month after the decision by a group of then-students and alumni, titled “Stevens Name Your Price.” The campaign had a fundraising goal of $20,000,001, an amount $1 more than the combined donations made by Gregory Gianforte to fund the new academic center, so that “the administration may entertain [their] request to change the name.” Memes were had. It eventually raised $1,500, which was donated to the Hudson Pride Connections Center, a “home and voice for the diverse LGBTQ community and our allies that advocates for our physical, mental, social and political well-being” for Hudson County. It was even picked up (or, in improv-speak, yes anded) by Colin Mochrie from “Whose Line Is It Anyway?”
MAY 2019: It was quietly announced that Greg Gianforte had rescinded the second $10 million gift, and that the new building, now dubbed the “Gateway Academic Complex,” will consist of the Gateway South Hall and the Gianforte Family Hall. Andy and company called that a small victory, because why not.
DECEMBER 2019: Following the announcement of the invite-only Gianforte Family Hall ribbon cutting, current students planned a protest for that evening, under the name “wewillnotSITby.” Hell yeah.
Three student leaders, Eli Trakhtenberg, Nasir Montalvo, and Adrian Castellanos (Torch VP, Diversity and Inclusivity Committee Chair, and SGA VP, respectively), took this as an opportunity to push for mass reform. Eli asked Andy for some help with their proposal, which focused on (a) the kind of ideas that Gianforte actively disagrees with and (b) a variety of administrative failures in students’ pursuit of making the campus better for all kinds of identities over the past four years.
This document, given to Board of Trustees members, pointed out these failures and demanded meaningful change and reform under Student Wellness, Administrative Transparency, and Campus Climate. Everything from broken promises to establish an Intercultural Center to a Title IX failure during the “red zone“ of sexual assault on campus to weak efforts of mental-health advocacy are mentioned in the doc. Dear reader, it’s bad.
On December 10th, the first student protest in the history of Stevens took place, with over 50 students, alumni, staff, faculty, and Hoboken community members demonstrating outside the ribbon-cutting ceremony. It was covered by a handful of outlets and supported by at least one business -- the local independent bookstore, Little City Books. There’s [poorly narrated] video too. Seeing this effort start with a group of three concerned humanities majors in 2017 to this many people IRL in December 2019… folks, it’s a thing of beauty.
As of January 5th, 2020, there has been no public response from the administration other than a nice press release about the totally peaceful opening of the hall.

This is an attempt towards my own courageous undertaking of freeing Creatives from their own grips of indecision (an excerpt from the Facebook group: Almost like poetry).
| Writers Block |
There has long since been a discussion among Humans™ surrounding the difficulty of initiating enough momentum to begin “The Writing Process.”
For the duration of this collective conversation, a commonality has emerged, converging individual opinions with the attributes of an actual blockade, or a barrier, that the teemingly passionate struggle to surmount and surpass.
Just as we can all agree this analogy is simply a metaphor unifying the shared experience of difficulty to remedy our hesitance, we can also agree that this “Writing Block” is not like a closed road, imposed by some elected, authoritarian official with intent to serve and protect. It’s not caution tape used to segregate some unauthorized territory, nor is it like a vicious brigade of pirates taking pleasure in gatekeeping buried treasure.
No real block actually exists, save the self-imposed block of behavior modifications we insist on instituting, based on our crude understanding of society’s expectations of us.
Unexpectedly, “The Writing Process” truly begins with an exercise in understanding one’s “self.” Setting aside the tools used for scribe, it’s prudent to address how one perceives the expectations of society and how heavily they allow those collective opinions to direct ones choices and voice.
There are many rules society as a whole has agreed upon, beneficially indoctrinated and imposed with expectations for us to follow, like obeying health codes in the LDR rooms of a hospital, but it’s important not to adopt this motif of standard setting for curating one’s own personality and voice. The hesitance that surfaces when attempting to form our own expression is a misconception of the need for our peers acceptance or the fear of facing consequences if they don’t approve of what they read.
Many creatives well know the soul-groaning urge to surface and purge a product of weight and worth. Unlike a woman’s pangs pre-birth, where epidurals and cesareans are used to ensure the product produced is perfectly unscathed and unbruised, you don’t need to preserve your works potential by preventing it from possibly being birthed with abnormalities.
These procedures for health are great for the sake of saving babies and mothers, but the works of silent dictation laid on a blank page can be born unformed or misshapen, placed in a draw, and forgotten. There is no pressure to account for the words you bring into this world.
They may stay locked away for many years, laying untouched for nobody to see, but with your subconscious continually surveying the landscape for a piece of inspiration to complete the thought, you’ll eventually pull that dusty page free, breath upon it some fresh perspective, and watch the work miraculously take its first breathe. The years between creation and full animation is of no consequence and is a process only seen by the creator.
Be fearless when venturing to speak your voice, and courageous enough to antecede perfection. This life is nothing but a small collection of seconds, each measuring reflected light off atmospheric particles with different absorptions being directed through your iris. Realizing the miraculous facet of your own occurrence in time is enough meaning you will ever need to justify your own writing craft.
So, if you want to write and feel the pain of creation rise up and inspire you to sit and think, realize your own value to decide what is worth saying and know it’s enough to make a mistake or form something incomplete. Stop letting the expectations and responses of society guide your voice. Remove the block from your mind’s eye, envision something precious, and write the following:

The Art Of Darkness - Apocalypse Now and Full Metal Jacket
"War is damnation," the prosaism broadcasts, yet it is by all accounts engaging hellfire. Alongside other horrendous subjects, for example, murder and vampirism, war positions among the most famous and ordinarily utilized topic of recorded excitement, and no war has yielded more or preferable movies over the one in Vietnam in the vicinity of 1955 and 1975. Regardless of whether itemizing the impacts of the war by concentrate its result or getting directly into the core of the fights, the Vietnam War has ended up being a wellspring of unlimited enthusiasm for producers and moviegoers alike. Maybe it is the ethical equivocalness of Vietnam that makes it the most fascinating war for film adjustments, and no movies delineate this vagueness superior to anything Francis Ford Coppola's Apocalypse Now (1979) and Stanley Kubrick's Full Metal Jacket (1987).
End of the world Now was the first and still, seemingly, the best film to happen amidst the war itself, shot not long after its closure in the mid-'70s and discharged on the precarious edge of the Reagan time in 1979. Roused by Joseph Conrad's 1899 novella Heart of Darkness, Coppola and screenwriter John Milius supplant the allegorical excursion of its focal character from 1890s Africa toward the Southeast Asian wilderness of the 1960s. Personally attached to this move in perspective is that, while Heart of Darkness' storyteller, Charlie Marlowe, starts as a rational and stable man who confronts frenzy and the inborn abhorrence of humanity as Mister Kurtz, Apocalypse Now's storyteller, Benjamin Willard (Martin Sheen), has just been driven at any rate to the skirt of franticness by his past Vietnam encounter before the start of the film. This change of point of view recommends that ethical quality and rational soundness had turned out to be significantly more conditional and equivocal in the season of the Vietnam War.
At the 1979 Cannes Film Festival debut of the film, Coppola expressed that "My film is not about Vietnam; my film is Vietnam." We are pushed into a universe of frenzy with no ethical focus, a well-suited vision of conditions in the Vietnam War. This expectation is prove not just by the disordered and vicious nature of the whole film, additionally in the choice to make the story's storyteller a crazy person, subsequently denying the watcher of an all the more customarily relatable entryway into the film's story.
Similarly as the film itself "is Vietnam" in world, three of its focal characters likewise are Vietnam in microcosm: Willard, Colonel Kurtz (Marlon Brando) and Captain Kilgore (Robert Duvall). Willard has been in the wilderness so much it has moved toward becoming his identity; in the film, he says of Vietnam: "When I was here I needed to be there. When I was there, whatever I could consider was getting over into the wilderness." Kurtz and Kilgore are two sides of a similar coin, the officer gone distraught from the franticness of war. Kilgore is the euphoric psycho who delights in fight ("I adore the possess a scent reminiscent of napalm in the morning," he says in one of the film's most well known scenes. "Scents like triumph") and has figured out how to keep a valid position in the military notwithstanding haphazardly annihilating whole towns, to the tune of Richard Wagner's "Flight of the Valkyries," for the sole motivation behind clearing a neighboring shoreline with the goal that he and his men can go surfing. Pundit Michael Wood, in his article "Blasts and Whispers" from the October 1979 New York Review of Books, attests that Kilgore ought to have been the Kurtz figure of the film, a man so colorfully crazy that he gives an unmistakable counterpoint to Sheen's Willard, yet the nearer likenesses amongst Willard and Brando's Kurtz allude to a figurative excursion of Willard into himself, into the darkest scopes of his own spirit, that echoes his strict voyage downriver to Kurtz's nest. When he finishes his task by murdering Kurtz, he has maybe quieted the infringing obscurity in his own heart.
End times Now's general vision of franticness - from Willard to Kilgore to Kurtz, alongside captivating side characters, for example, Sam Bottoms' LSD-mishandling surfer/officer and Dennis Hopper's over the top photojournalist - paints an exasperating picture of the Vietnam encounter, as well as of all humankind in a world that made the barbarities of Vietnam conceivable. As Coppola himself says in regards to the making of the film in Fax Bahr, George Hickenlooper and Eleanor Coppola's 1991 narrative Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse, "We were out there with an excessive amount of gear, an excessive amount of cash and a lot of time... what's more, we as a whole went somewhat crazy," which can be viewed as a keen feedback of America's position in the war itself. At last, Apocalypse Now is more than just a war film, which might be the reason numerous commentators think of it as the best war film at any point made, and maybe even the best American film of any sort.
Full Metal Jacket has likewise been "acclaimed by commentators around the globe as the best war motion picture at any point made," as indicated by Warner Home Video Inc's. 1990 video arrival of the film. Despite the fact that it could be contended that Apocalypse Now is a more noteworthy realistic accomplishment, it is less reasonable to state that it is all the more consistent with life. End of the world Now is very adapted and subjective, while Full Metal Jacket has a particular narrative feel, regardless of its frequently shocking cinematography and utilization of elaborate gadgets, for example, moderate movement. These methodologies mirror the foundation of every chief: Kubrick started with documentaries like "Flying Padre" (1951), while Coppola got his begin at B-motion picture maker Roger Corman's American-International Pictures.
Full Metal Jacket's more goal, reasonable viewpoint additionally mirrors the perspective of its hero and storyteller, Private Joker (Matthew Modine), who experiences Marine preparing to wind up noticeably a field journalist in Vietnam. Despite the fact that Joker is an a great deal more normal and balanced character than Willard, he too is profoundly adulterated by his experience, as he turns out to be increasingly negative all through the film. As Joker says at one point in the film, in the persona of John Wayne, "A day without blood resembles a day without daylight." This skeptical loss of purity is a firm basic topic in the film, which, similar to Apocalypse Now, is a voyage into the core of murkiness. This is set up in the opening succession, which demonstrates its different characters having their heads shaved, set to the tune of Johnny Wright's "Welcome Vietnam." Full Metal Jacket is, basically, a story about growing up - but an exceptionally merciless one - that is partitioned into two independent, yet associated, stories inside the film.
The primary story pushes the watcher into the inflexible, savage existence of Marine preparing camp and, however Joker is built up as the hero from the begin, the focal character of this first story is really Leonard Lawrence (Vincent D'Onofrio). Leonard, named "Gomer Pyle" by cruel penetrate educator Sgt. Hartman (R. Lee Ermey), is a great schoolyard spook's casualty: overweight, ease back witted to the point of mellow impediment, very defenseless and inclined to crying under pressure. Hartman, as a bore teacher, has made a profession of being a domineering jerk, and the two promptly fall into this dynamic, with Hartman more than once stifling, slapping and mortifying Leonard all through the film. This story circular segment is effectively broken into three acts: Leonard's mortification, Leonard's training, and Leonard's reprisal. Unexpectedly, the culmination of Leonard's instruction is the time when he goes distraught from the embarrassment and manhandle he has endured on account of Hartman and in addition alternate enlisted people. Leonard at long last snaps when Joker hints at his first debasement: subsequent to become a close acquaintence with Leonard and instructing him, Joker eventually participates in a ceremonial beating of Leonard after he and alternate volunteers are rebuffed for Leonard's transgressions. Now, the story moves into its third demonstration, in which Leonard renders retribution on the tormenting Sgt. Hartman, whose last words are more unrepentant tormenting: "What is your significant glitch? Did your Mommy and Daddy not give you enough love when you were youthful?" Ultimately, however, Leonard pardons Joker and extras his life before taking his own.
The title of the film originates from this first half, in a monologue Leonard gives for his rifle, which speaks to him a measure of cleanliness and request in the "realm of crap" in which he exists. This fundamentally totals up the topic of the film, which is additionally shown in its two-section structure: regardless of how taught and organized a warrior's preparation and weapons might be, the war itself is still disorder. This confusion runs uncontrolled in the second 50% of the film, in which Joker winds up amidst battle, at first as an outside spectator revealing what he sees, at the end of the day having no real option except to take an interest in the brutality surrounding him. Like Apocalypse Now's Willard, Joker is to some degree on the edges of battle, yet at the same time profoundly affected and undermined by it; while Willard is a procured executioner working outside the fundamental clash of the Vietnam War, Joker is amidst this contention be that as it may, initially at any rate, does not take an interest in any killing.
The two movies address a subject that is for the most part evaded or disregarded in war movies: that of sexuality in wartime. Between Apocalypse Now's prematurely ended Playboy Bunny visit from the get-go in the film and Full Metal Jacket's Vietnamese whores in the second half, the two movies articulately represent the statement so persuasively voiced in Chris Hedges' 2002 diary of wartime news coverage, War Is a Force That Gives Us Meaning, that "there is in wartime an almost general distraction with sexual contacts." The undercurrent of assault and pressure display in the two cases indicates the ethical equivocalness of this kind of sexuality, which, by augmentation, demonstrates the flawed profound quality of war itself.
This vagueness is likewise found in the trips embraced by the focal characters of each film. In Full Metal Jacket's second story, Joker is given a mission by his boss, Lt. Lockhart (John Terry), which drives him into the core of obscurity, where he confronts his very own definitive debasement heart (a microcosm for
