Uplifting West African communities, one cashew at a time

Uplifting West African communities, one cashew at a time
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ever wonder how your favorite snack was sourced? Joshua Reed-Diawuoh thinks more people should.
Reed-Diawuoh MBA ’20 is the founder and CEO of GRIA Food Company, which partners with companies that ethically source and process food in West Africa to support local food economies and help communities in the region more broadly.
“It’s very difficult for these agribusinesses and producers to start sustainable businesses and build up that value chain in the area,” says Reed-Diawuoh, who started the company as a student in the MIT Sloan School of Management. “We want to support these companies that put in the work to build integrated businesses that are employing people and uplifting communities.”
GRIA, which stands for “Grown in Africa,” is currently selling six types of flavored cashews sourced from Benin, Togo, and Burkina Faso. All of the cashews are certified by Fairtrade International, which means in addition to offering sustainable wages, access to financing, and decent working conditions, the companies receive a “Fairtrade Premium” on top of the selling price that allows them to invest in the long-term health of their communities.
“That premium is transformational,” Reed-Diawuoh says. “The premium goes to the producer cooperatives, or the farmers working the land, and they can invest that in any way they choose. They can put it back into their business, they can start new community development projects, like building schools or improving wastewater infrastructure, whatever they want.”
Cracking the nut
Reed-Diawuoh’s family is from Ghana, and before coming to MIT Sloan, he worked to support agriculture and food manufacturing for countries in Sub-Saharan Africa, with particular focus on uplifting small-scale farmers. That’s where he learned about difficulties with financing and infrastructure constraints that held many companies back.
“I wanted to get my hands dirty and start my own business that contributed to improving agricultural development in West Africa,” Reed-Diawuoh says.
He entered MIT Sloan in 2018, taking entrepreneurship classes and exploring several business ideas before deciding to ethically source produce from farmers and sell directly to consumers. He says MIT Sloan’s Sustainability Business Lab offered particularly valuable lessons for how to structure his business.
In his second year, Reed-Diawuoh was selected for a fellowship at the Legatum Center, which connected him to other entrepreneurs working in emerging markets around the world.
“Legatum was a pivotal milestone for me,” he says. “It provided me with some structure and space to develop this idea. It also gave me an incredible opportunity to take risks and explore different business concepts in a way I couldn’t have done if I was working in industry.”
The business model Reed-Diawuoh settled on for GRIA sources product from agribusiness partners in West Africa that adhere to the strictest environmental and labor standards. Reed-Diawuoh decided to start with cashews because they have many manual processing steps — from shelling to peeling and roasting — that are often done after the cashews are shipped out of West Africa, limiting the growth of local food economies and taking wealth out of communities.
Each of GRIA’s partners, from the companies harvesting cashews to the processing facilities, works directly with farmer cooperatives and small-scale farmers and is certified by Fairtrade International.
“Without proper oversight and regulations, workers oftentimes get exploited, and child labor is a huge problem across the agriculture sector,” Reed-Diawuoh says. “Fairtrade certifications try and take a robust and rigorous approach to auditing all of the businesses and their supply chains, from producers to farmers to processors. They do on-site visits and they audit financial documents. We went through this over the course of a thorough three-month review.”
After importing cashew kernels, GRIA flavors and packages them at a production facility in Boston. Reed-Diawuoh started by selling to small independent retailers in Greater Boston before scaling up GRIA’s online sales. He started ramping up production in the beginning of 2023.
“Every time we sell our product, if people weren’t already familiar with Fairtrade or ethical sourcing, we provide information on our packaging and all of our collateral,” Reed-Diawuoh says. “We want to spread this message about the importance of ethical sourcing and the importance of building up food manufacturing in West Africa in particular, but also in rising economies throughout the world.”
Making ethical sourcing mainstream
GRIA currently imports about a ton of Fairtrade cashews and kernels each quarter, and Reed-Diawuoh hopes to double that number each year for the foreseeable future.
“For each pound, we pay premiums for the kernels, and that supports this ecosystem where producers get compensated fairly for their work on the land, and agribusinesses are able to build more robust and profitable business models, because they have an end market for these Fairtrade-certified products.”
Reed-Diawuoh is currently trying out different packaging and flavors and is in discussions with partners to expand production capacity and move into Ghana. He’s also exploring corporate collaborations and has provided MIT with product over the past two years for conferences and other events.
“We’re experimenting with different growth strategies,” Reed-Diawuoh says. “We’re very much still in startup mode, but really trying to ramp up our sales and production.”
As GRIA scales, Reed-Diawuoh hopes it pushes consumers to start asking more of their favorite food brands.
“It’s absolutely critical that, if we’re sourcing produce in markets like the U.S. from places like West Africa, we’re hyper-focused on doing it in an ethical manner,” Reed-Diawuoh says. “The overall goal of GRIA is to ensure we are adhering to and promoting strict sourcing standards and being rigorous and thoughtful about the way we import product.”

Empowering Dreams: A Call for Sponsorship in the Face of Hardship
My name is Oluwabukunmi. I’m nineteen years old, a student from Nigeria, though not currently enrolled in school.
I dropped out of high school/secondary school, but I never stopped learning. This self-directed learning journey has helped me find my purpose and realize the power of self-education.
It might sound surprising, but I’m glad I dropped out of school. Whenever I reflect on it, I wonder if I would have ever found my passion, dreams, and interests if I had stayed in school. While in school, I didn’t know what to do with my life and didn’t have any dreams. All I understood was that we went to school to learn how to read and write.
Leaving school initially made me feel inferior whenever I saw my classmates. My parents, who were struggling financially, couldn’t afford my school fees. People often judged them, thinking they were not serious about my education, but I understood their situation. Things became tough for them after my father, an employee at Nigeria BEDC (Benin Electricity Distribution Company), was laid off when BEDC was privatized. They started a small business with borrowed money, which led them into a cycle of debt.
I turned the library into my school, and from this challenge, I found enlightenment and new opportunities. I discovered my passion for writing, web development, and computer science.
I decided to take the first step by enrolling in a free online course on web development (The Odin Project), which I believe will later support my writing and my studies in computer science (OSSU). I worked for a year as a salesgirl to save money for a small laptop (HP EliteBook 8440p). During that time, I had to pause my studies because all the books I read were in the library.
After getting my laptop last year, I started working on The Odin Project. I had to stop going to the library due to a lack of electricity and began studying at a nearby hotel (which isn’t the best place to study). Due to inflation and rising fuel prices, the hotel reduced its electricity usage, turning it on at 1:00 pm and off at 8:00 am. I couldn’t stay overnight, so I could only study there from 1:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
This limited study time, combined with my parents’ financial struggles, made it difficult for me to progress. They moved to a village due to overwhelming debt, and we could barely afford one meal a day. Studying became increasingly challenging without the necessities to support my course, and my progress slowed significantly.
I considered working again, but if I did, I wouldn’t have time to continue my course due to the lack of electricity in my area. I might end up giving up on my dreams altogether.
After much contemplation, I decided to seek help. Finding a sponsor or receiving donations could significantly support my education and help me achieve my goals.
Writing and posting this took a lot of courage and overcoming self-doubt. Any help or support for my situation would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Sincerely, Oluwabukunmi

What are Virtual Cards?
Virtual cards, also referred to as e-cards or digital cards, are essentially online payment cards that exist solely in electronic form. Unlike traditional plastic cards, virtual cards are generated digitally and can be used for online transactions without the need for a physical presence. Each African virtual card is typically associated with a specific account and can be used to make purchases or payments online, offering a convenient alternative to traditional payment methods.
The Rise of Virtual Cards in Africa
As the global economy increasingly shifts towards digital transactions, the adoption of virtual cards in Africa has been on the rise. With just a few clicks, users can generate Cameroon virtual card numbers linked to their existing bank accounts or digital wallets, enabling them to make secure online payments without hassle.
Security and Reliability
In addition to accessibility, Noupia prioritizes security and reliability in its African virtual card offerings. With advanced encryption technology and stringent authentication measures, Noupia ensures that every transaction is protected against fraud and unauthorized access. This commitment to security provides users with peace of mind, knowing that their financial information is safeguarded throughout the payment process.

At the forefront of Africa's economic transformation stands the African Development Bank Group (AfDB), a driving force behind the continent's growth agenda. With a mandate to promote sustainable development and economic integration, the AfDB plays a pivotal role in shaping Africa's economic landscape.
Through its various initiatives and programs, the AfDB works tirelessly to support African countries in their quest for development. From infrastructure projects to financial assistance programs, the AfDB provides crucial support to governments and businesses across the continent, catalyzing growth and fostering prosperity.
A Continent of Opportunity: Africa's Economic Outlook
According to the latest report from the African Development Bank Group, Africa's economic outlook is brighter than ever, with eleven African countries projected to be among the world's fastest-growing economies in 2024. This optimistic forecast reflects Africa's resilience in the face of global challenges and highlights the continent's potential for growth and development.
Overall, real gross domestic product (GDP) growth for the continent is expected to average 3.8% and 4.2% in 2024 and 2025, respectively, surpassing projected global averages. This robust growth underscores Africa's position as the world's second-fastest-growing region, trailing only behind Asia.
Africa's Top-Performing Economies
Among the top-performing African economies are Niger, Senegal, Libya, Rwanda, Cote d'Ivoire, Ethiopia, Benin, Djibouti, Tanzania, Togo, and Uganda. These countries are projected to experience strong economic performance, with growth rates exceeding 6% in many cases.
Niger leads the pack with a staggering growth rate of 11.2%, followed closely by Senegal at 8.2% and Libya at 7.9%. These impressive growth figures reflect the resilience and dynamism of Africa's economies, driven by strategic investments, economic diversification, and increased consumption.
Challenges and Opportunities
Despite the promising outlook, Africa's economic journey is not without challenges. Rising geopolitical tensions, regional conflicts, and political instability pose significant risks to the continent's growth trajectory. Additionally, global economic uncertainties and inflationary pressures threaten to disrupt trade and investment flows, further complicating Africa's economic landscape.
To navigate these challenges successfully, African countries must adopt a multi-faceted approach that includes larger pools of financing, policy reforms, and strategic investments. By bolstering resilience and fostering inclusive growth, Africa can overcome obstacles and realize its full economic potential.
The Role of Sustainable Development: Building a Brighter Future
Central to Africa's economic renaissance is a commitment to sustainable development and inclusive growth. By prioritizing environmental sustainability, social equity, and economic prosperity, African nations can build a brighter future for generations to come.
Through initiatives like the African Development Bank Group's Macroeconomic Performance and Outlook (MEO) report, African countries gain valuable insights and recommendations to guide their development efforts. By leveraging these resources and embracing a shared vision of progress, Africa can overcome challenges and build a prosperous future for all.
Conclusion: Africa's Time to Shine
As Africa embarks on its journey towards economic prosperity, the continent stands at a crossroads, with boundless opportunities awaiting. With bold leadership, strategic investments, and a commitment to sustainable development, Africa is poised to realize its full potential and emerge as a global economic powerhouse.
As the African Development Bank Group leads the charge, Africa's destiny lies in its hands. By harnessing the continent's vast resources and talent, African nations can overcome challenges, seize opportunities, and write a new chapter in Africa's storied history. With determination and perseverance, Africa's time to shine has arrived.

Africa's Leap into Circular Economy Revolution
Tumblr media
In the face of climate change, Africa is rewriting its narrative from vulnerability to opportunity. The sidelines of COP28 in Dubai hosted a panel discussion on Advancing Circular Economy for Climate Resilience in Africa. Co-hosted by organizations like the African Development Bank and the United Nations Environment Programme, the event posited Africa as a potential hub for combating climate change through circular economy practices. Circularity offers African countries a chance to reduce reliance on finite resources, diversify economies, and create new employment opportunities. This approach positions the continent to better withstand climate-related challenges. Finland's Role in Promoting Circularity in Africa Finland has emerged as a key advocate for circularity in Africa, contributing to the Africa Circular Economy Facility (ACEF) and pioneering a national circular economy roadmap. Ambassador Tuula Yrjola’s presence at the event underscored Finland's commitment to promoting circular economy models in Africa, emphasizing decoupling economic growth from resource consumption and promoting regional value chains.   Economic and Environmental Benefits of the Circular Economy The circular economy model can significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, offering a sustainable and clean energy transition. For Africa, this model represents an $8 billion annual market opportunity. Dr. Anthony Nyong from the African Development Bank highlighted Africa's potential to not only tackle climate change but also become a global solution provider.   Africa's Progress and Challenges in Circular Economy The African Union Commission has developed the Continental Circular Economy Action Plan for Africa, serving as a roadmap for the transition. The ACEF plays a vital role in promoting circularity across the continent, supported by the African Development Bank Group and Regional Member Countries. Chad, along with Benin, Ethiopia, Cameroon, and Uganda, benefits from ACEF's multi-country national circular economy roadmap project. Representatives like Ms. Tchere from Chad’s Ministry of Environment shared their aspirations and challenges in establishing circularity-focused platforms and seeking support for their goals.   Strengthening Partnerships for Circular Economy Transition Dr. Rose Mwebaza of UNEP emphasized the need for stronger partnerships and alliances to mobilize resources for Africa’s transition to circularity. The ACEF’s three-pronged approach focuses on creating an enabling environment, incentivizing initiatives through business incubation, and advocating for mainstreaming circularity through alliances like ACEA.
Uniting for a Circular and Resilient Africa
The conclusion of the COP28 side event echoed the theme “Unite. Act. Deliver”, calling for collaborative efforts from governments, businesses, and civil society. By embracing circular economy practices, Africa can build climate resilience, foster sustainable development, and secure a prosperous future for its people. This transition to circularity not only addresses immediate climate challenges but also paves the way for a sustainable and thriving African economy.   Sources: THX News & African Development Bank Group. By • Olalekan Fagbade ⊆ Why I appointed my Critics as Commissioners - Governor opens up Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has stated why he appointed his critics as commissioners saying it is to afford them the opportunity to bring their wealth of experience on board and work from within. He said even though he came under suffocating criticism from cross section of the public, he insisted that it was more reasons why they had to bring them on board. Obaseki stated this when he swore in the four new commissioners at the New Festival Hall in Government House, Benin City, the Edo State capital.   He charged them to serve the people instead of viewing public office as a venture to make money. “There are clearly some things they see from the outside that we are not doing inside and now that they are joining the team, they will help the team inside to see better on what to do to finish well. “We have listened to their qualification and experience as their CVs were read to us and I have no doubt in my mind that all of them who are joining us here today have all that it takes to finish well with us.” The governor continued: “You have taken your oath of office and I hope you will keep copies and always reflect on the oath taken. You have taken an oath to serve our people. You are coming into public service to serve the public and you are not likely to make money. Public office is not a business where people come and make money but an office where people come and serve and give of themselves. “When people ask you, when you have been there, what have you gained or done for yourself? Let them know that you are not there to do for yourself but to do for them. You are in office to provide services for the people so that life will become better for the people. “As an administration, we have accomplished quite a lot and now that you have joined, you will see what we have done. We have not spoken so much on what we have achieved but given your strength, I know you will now help others who don’t understand to appreciate what we have accomplished, what we have done, and why we have done the things we have done. “This government has been a foundation-laying administration to help us rebuild Edo so that Edo can be great again. Our people have been our number one priority as without them development cannot happen. That is why we focused on areas like education, strengthening the public and civil service to be able to provide services for Edo people.” He added, “Today, you have taken an oath to serve and the world is looking at you. You are here to serve Edo people, not Godwin Obaseki. If it was about service to Godwin Obaseki, I don’t think I would have nominated you because some of you have not been too kind to me in terms of what you have written, but it’s about the State and Edo people.” Noting that his government will in the remaining 14-months focus on sustainability, the governor said: “We still have a lot to do even though we have only about 14 months left. “The priority for us is to make sure that we build sustainability into what we are doing because the question on the lips of most Edo people is, Governor Obaseki, when you complete what you are doing, are we sure the next administration will be able to sustain what you have started?” Responding on behalf of other commissioners, Osilama Okuofo, commended the governor for finding them fit for the position, noting, “We are proud to be part of the team and are ready to contribute our quota no matter how small to ensure that the team finishes well and Edo becomes great again.”

Navigating the OAPI Trademark Registration Process in Nigeria
Trademarks play a crucial role in protecting the intellectual property of businesses. Registering a trademark provides legal protection and helps create a distinct identity in the market. In Nigeria, the OAPI (Organisation Africaine de la Propriété Intellectuelle) trademark registration process is an important step for businesses looking to secure their brand identity in the country. You can visit AllThingsIP Africa to know more about OAPI trademark registration process.
Understanding the OAPI
The OAPI is an intergovernmental organization that facilitates the registration and protection of intellectual property rights in its member states. It covers 17 countries in Africa, including Nigeria. By registering a trademark with the OAPI, businesses can obtain protection in multiple countries with a single application. This simplifies the process and reduces costs for trademark registration.
Tumblr media
Benefits of OAPI Trademark Registration
Registering a trademark with the OAPI offers several benefits for businesses operating in Nigeria:
Protection of brand identity: Registering a trademark with the OAPI ensures that your brand identity, including your company name, logo, and slogan, is legally protected. This means that other businesses cannot use a similar or identical trademark that may confuse consumers and dilute your brand's recognition.
Exclusive rights: By registering your trademark, you gain exclusive rights to use that trademark in connection with your goods or services. This allows you to prevent others from using a similar trademark that may create confusion in the marketplace.
Legal recourse: Registering your trademark with the OAPI provides a legal basis for taking action against any infringement. If another business uses your trademark without permission, you can pursue legal action to stop them and seek damages.
Business expansion: A registered trademark can make it easier for your business to expand into new markets. It provides credibility and recognition, making it more likely for customers to trust and choose your products or services over others.
International protection: OAPI trademark registration provides protection not only in Nigeria but also in 16 other member countries, including Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Congo, Côte d'Ivoire, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Senegal, and Togo. This offers broader protection for your brand across multiple markets.
Overall, registering a trademark with the OAPI offers businesses operating in Nigeria a range of benefits, including brand protection, exclusive rights, legal recourse, business expansion opportunities, asset value, deterrent to copycats, and international protection. It is a valuable step towards safeguarding your brand and ensuring its long-term success.

The OAPI Trademark Registration Process
The OAPI trademark registration process in Nigeria involves several steps:
Preliminary search: Before filing a trademark application in Nigeria, it is advisable to conduct a preliminary search to ensure that the proposed trademark is not already registered or being used by someone else. This can be done by conducting a search in the OAPI trademark database.
Filing the application: Once the preliminary search is clear, the next step is to file the trademark application with the OAPI. The application should include the applicant's details, a representation of the trademark, and a list of goods or services for which the trademark will be used.
Formal examination: After the application is filed, it undergoes a formal examination by the OAPI to ensure that all the necessary requirements have been met. This includes checking for completeness of the application, proper classification of goods or services, and compliance with any relevant laws or regulations.
Substantive examination: Once the formal examination is complete, the OAPI conducts a substantive examination to assess the distinctiveness and registrability of the trademark. This involves evaluating whether the trademark is capable of distinguishing the goods or services of the applicant from those of other traders.
It is important to note that the OAPI trademark registration process in Nigeria is governed by the Bangui Agreement, which is the international treaty that establishes the OAPI. This means that the registration process and requirements are standardized across all member countries, providing a streamlined and efficient process for trademark applicants.

Already 13 African Countries Utilize Ripple And XRP: Report
Already 13 African Countries Utilize Ripple And XRP: Report https://bitcoinist.com/already-13-african-countries-utilize-ripple-xrp/ The “African Blockchain Report 2022” report by CV VC in collaboration with South Africa’s Standard Bank reveals that Ripple and XRP are already utilized in 13 African countries. In the report, which was released in late April 2023 but has gone unnoticed in the XRP community, an entire page is dedicated to the technology of Ripple. According to the report, the opportunities for digital payment service providers like Ripple in Africa are overwhelming. While the region has already made significant progress in recent years, much of the potential is still untapped, it says. By 2025 alone, electronic payments revenue is expected to grow 20% to $40 billion. However, there are still gaps in the continent’s financial system that leave countless people unbanked and many African businesses. Crypto is also the solution due to the high penetration of cell phones. Yet, less than 10% of total payments in Africa are currently made digitally. According to the report authors, blockchain and crypto-enabled remittances can save an average of 6.3%, and in sub-Saharan Africa, 8.46% in fees compared to traditional methods. Ripple Already Well-Positioned In Africa The report effectively provides a pitch for Ripple and its XRP based On-Demand Liquidity (ODL) solution. It also unveils a map of the countries in which the company is already active: Benin, Burkina Faso, Cote d’Ivoire, Egypt, Ghana, Kenia, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa, Togo and Uganda. The authors write that both financial institutions and individuals will benefit from Ripple’s modernization of the African payments system: Ripple’s payments solution, On-Demand Liquidity, enables organizations to settle global payments in real-time at a fraction of the cost without tying up working capital in destination accounts. By leveraging the digital asset XRP as a bridge currency, funds can be sent and received in local currency on either side of a transaction. Thanks to Ripple’s growing global network, multinational financial institutions can also benefit, according to the report. They can reduce costs by eliminating upfront funding while gaining access to payout rails around the globe. As digital payments innovation and crypto adoption broaden, Ripple is partnering with local financial institutions and fintechs to bring the benefits of better cross-border remittances to the region, including regional payment interoperability and seamless money movement across the continent. A special mention is also made of Ripple’s partnership with MFS Africa, which was announced in the first quarter of 2023. According to the report, the South Africa-based provider is using ODL to create ISO20022-compliant payment services with blockchain-based payment rails. XRP Price Needs To Hold Crucial Support At press time, the XRP price stood at $0.4259. Price needs to hold support at $0.41 to avoid falling back into the November 2022 to mid-March 2023 trading range. On the upside, $0.44 is the most important resistance, while the 200-day EMA at $0.4354 could also provide stronger headwinds. via Bitcoinist.com https://bitcoinist.com May 09, 2023 at 10:20AM
