Fauni prchající před automobilem [Fauns Fleeing before an Automobile] {1905} - Beneš Knüpfer
Tumblr media
"At the turn of the 1870s and 1880s, Knüpfer mostly depicted mythological topics. In 1879 he was granted a two-year scholarship in Rome where he then lived permanently. This journey to Italy was regarded as a countermovement to Paris. He gradually ended up in isolation after the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries and his paintings were often rejected. Fauni prchající před automobilem dates from this period. Knüpfer was strongly associated with his art and very sensitive to criticism. He committed suicide in 1910." - Národní Galerie Praha

Beneš Knüpfer (1848-1910) Czech "Nymph on a Dolphin" Czech painter of the second half of the 19th century, representative of late Romanticism whose artistic direction was shaped already during his studies in Munich where, under the influence of the so-called Munich school, he focused on the depiction of marine elements. For a number of years he also lived in Rome where he became successful. Later he became a member of the Vienna Secession group and even the Emperor Franz Joseph of Austria himself bought his work representing the clash of Tritons. In Bohemia, however, he was not as popular - the artist's exhibition in 1910 was ridiculed which hurt the sensitive artist so profoundly that he committed suicide by jumping to the sea
