Finishing up season 13 with my parents & we were wondering, is there a reason why after Troy leaves that Barnaby does most of the driving? We just realized that he does most of the driving working with Jones and we think with Scott as well.

Good catch!!

Here's one of my fav bits of Midsomer trivia: John Hopkins who played Troy's successor Dan Scott could barely drive when he started on the show. He says they actually had to write him into the passenger seat.

But hey it works for the characters. Driving is such a Troy bit, Troy is so bad at it, it's a classic. It feels natural to have driving arrangements change when he leaves. Also Troy has a different dynamic with Tom than any of the other sergeants. Troy is Tom's personal assistant, Tom's errand boy, Tom's nanny and handler and bodyguard and he is Tom's chauffeur.

To which Scott says fuck no.

Scott is much more than just Troy's successor. Much to Tom's horror and delight, Scott will not be pressed into the same role and the non-driving underlines that.

By the time Jones comes in and takes over from Scott, he doesn't have to do the same kind of heavy lifting to get Tom off his hierarchics. Jones still drives a lot?? But it's not because Tom is a passenger princess and his boss. It's not an automatic thing like with Troy.

I feel with late era Tom there are some Nettles-isms too. Little nods to the actor. John Nettles has a thing for cars so having Tom drive more might have been an organic development too.
