Look at all the Beetlejuice merch. It's for the original 1988 film and the 2024 film.

It's everywhere. Major retail chains promote the movies. Food and candy corporations promote them. People wear Beej x Lyds wedding t-shirts.

Now look around again. How many places do you see anything to do with the Beej musical? Where do you see it mentioned? Have you ever seen a major retail chain selling Beej musical t-shirts?

No one is interested in the musical except musical theater people. And, speaking as someone who once worked in the musical theater world, theater fans are fringe. About 10% of the American population has ever seen a Broadway musical, even on tour. Only Theater Kids listen to musicals. The majority of Americans don't even know the Beej musical exists.

The popularity of the 1988 film, which is an undisputed classic, and the 2024 smash hit overwhelmingly outnumbers the people who love the musical.

Not sure where you're getting you're info from. If you're judging this strictly by tumblr posts you really need to look out in the real world.

Addendum: If you're judging from AO3 fanfics, the majority of people in America have never heard of AO3. Fanfic readers and writers, like musical theater fans, think their numbers are vastly bigger than they are because they spend their time in the echo chambers of their fandoms.

No offense, but why is musical juice the most popular version of juice despite being the inferior design? That's not my sleazy old man; that's a Funko pop collector.
