Season 9, Mission 4: Out of the Past
Heist
~
[birds twitter]
AMELIA SPENS: Okay team, let's go over this one more time. General Bakari has sent Abel a distress call from a remote Tunisian base, Red Scorpion, which is probably home to red fungus and definitely home to one Ernest Van Ark.
PETER LYNNE: Oh, despite the fact that you, you know, um, what was it? Oh yes, blew him up with a rocket launcher, Five! That's... [laughs] It's typical! My luck. We get Janine back safe, and oh, who pops up but the devil himself?
AMELIA SPENS: Bakari wants a team to sneak something out of Red Scorpion. Our hope is that it's a red fungus countermeasure. To get there, our team needs to infiltrate New Agadir, a city in the middle of the desert, while posing as Death's Hand, a mercenary group whose greatest hits include assassinating a blue chip CEO using a neurotoxin-tipped knitting needle and overthrowing at least three heads of state.
FRANCES DEMPSEY: This is all so exciting! Proper Mission Impossible stuff!
AMELIA SPENS: Peter, remind me why you brought the new person along. It's Frances, isn't it? From the Hebrides?
FRANCES DEMPSEY: I wanted to try a run. Janine said I could come because it's a low-danger assignment, and because I promised to stop asking to be on the Tunisia team if she let me. I overheard Sam talking about the mission.
AMELIA SPENS: Marvellous. Janine should add “make Sam keep a secret” to her bucket list. [sighs] At least you're not pestering me to let you go. I've already had to veto Jody's involvement. I need her here working with me to train runners on McShell tower protocol.
PETER LYNNE: [laughs] I bet she was thrilled about that.
AMELIA SPENS: Anyway, our problem is getting a team to Tunisia. The information in Bakari's transmission enabled us to contact the Maghreb Protectorate, a government which operates in what used to be parts of Tunisia, Libya, and Algeria.
FRANCES DEMPSEY: Another government, that's incredible!
AMELIA SPENS: Yes, well, they're no use to us yet. They have no jurisdiction over New Agadir, and besides, our governments do not yet trust each other enough for them to provide assistance. Our team can't risk crossing Europe - too many unknowns - and our few ships are all either exploring or acting as repeater stations for overseas agents - too far out to be useful.
All we have left are small coastal merchants. I've found one scow captain willing to take people to Tunisia, but he's cautious. He wants the latest nautical charts. Pre-apocalypse, obviously. Not a lot of hydrographic surveys since Z-Day. You're approaching the London home of Horatio Brewer, famous British investor. Should have what we want.
PETER LYNNE: Are we sure about that, Amelia?
AMELIA SPENS: Fairly. Mr. Brewer was a keen yachtsman. Old Ministry intel says he planned to escape Z-Day by sailing to a second home on the Tunisian coast. Had all the prep work done, then his neighborhood turned gray. We think zoms got him, but he was keeping his preparation safe in a basement vault.
PETER LYNNE: Great. So basically, we're looting a dead man's travel plans. Lovely. Um, see that street across the park, Five? That'll be his, so better hurry while it's still light out. Come on, everybody. Run!
~
[birds twitter]
FRANCES DEMPSEY: Wow, this is a classy street. Look at the mansions. That one's got ivory cherubs carved over the gates.
PETER LYNNE: Neighborhood's in pretty awful condition, though. You've got overgrown gardens, smashed windows. No sign of V-types though, thank God. Dearg made me a prototype one-man burn cube, Five, sewn right into my chest. Anti-P-type measure. Got the trigger, but not massively eager to try it.
AMELIA SPENS: Maybe not, but it's the only reason I'm letting you near Tunisia.
FRANCES DEMPSEY: So Amelia, who exactly are these Death’s Hands people? Will they be tough to impersonate?
PETER LYNNE: Frances...
AMELIA SPENS: Oh, they're a nasty bunch. Former special ops, freelance since Z-Day. Bakari says they've been traveling the world as hired guns. Their rep gets them a lot of private security gigs. He's given us contact details for the real team, so we can lure them out of our operation’s way.
PETER LYNNE: Frankly, I don't think we should be trusting Bakari. This whole thing is probably a trap, which is why, Frances, Janine said that you can't – [zombies moan] Oh, God damn it!
FRANCES DEMPSEY: Uh, isn't that the place we want? Big Georgian house covered in ivy?
PETER LYNNE: Well, Amelia, there's a horde of zoms milling outside Brewer's house, so we can't make it to the entrance.
FRANCES DEMPSEY: Well, we could gain entry by the house next door. Look at the big white mansion. Its roof's half collapsed, sloping into the road. We could clamber across it, jump to Brewer's roof, and get in through his attic window.
AMELIA SPENS: You know Peter, I'm warming to the new blood. Quickly then, off you go. I've got the scow captain waiting on tenterhooks. I need this deal closed ASAP. Run!
~
PETER LYNNE: Amelia, we um, we got in through the attic window, followed a ladder leading deeper into the house. Now we've found a sort of private antique collection? So we're in a carpeted hall full of artifacts in glass cases.
FRANCES DEMPSEY: They've got plaques. That's a Roman bust, Celtic coins, an Egyptian amulet. That's a Carthaginian pot from Tunisia. Shouldn't these be in a museum?
AMELIA SPENS: Ah, well, Mr. Brewer was a rather avid black market trader, made a fortune trafficking plundered historical artifacts. Actually, it might make a good impression if our little expedition returns some stolen goods. Grab the Carthaginian pot, Peter.
PETER LYNNE: Oh, burglary with Amelia, just like old times. So let's see. It's a classic. We've got the pot on the pedestal, so if I just lift its case - [alarm blares] Ah. I honestly didn't think the alarm battery would have lasted this long. Um, Five, grab that pot, would you?
[zombies moan]
FRANCES DEMPSEY: Uh, guys, apparently there are zoms in the house too, coming up the stairs behind Five. Six big ones in dark suits.
PETER LYNNE: Oh, that'll be Brewer's former home security. Alarm's got their attention. Hello! Still on the job, eh, boys?
AMELIA SPENS: Wish I could find staff that dedicated. No need to waste rounds, blueprint says there's a master bedroom down the corridor on your left. Brewer always left a spare key in the lock for his mistress. If you can lure the zombies in, you can trap them there. Run!
~
FRANCES DEMSPEY: Keep going, Five, there's the door past the amphora vases. God, how big is this house?
AMELIA SPENS: It was originally five smaller houses that were joined together behind a Georgian facade. Brewer felt he needed the space.
[door creaks open, floor creaks]
PETER LYNNE: Amelia, we're in the bedroom. There's a – ooh, four-poster bed, lovely. Uh, photos of Brewer and his family. Nice mustache. It's very Howard Hughesian. Um, Frances, you okay?
FRANCES DEMPSEY: Zombies! I forgot how scary they are up close. Didn't have them on Dearg. I'm actually shaking.
PETER LYNNE: Oh, uh, oh yeah, of course. No no no, um, it's okay, Frances. See, so the key was in the door and um, here's what we're gonna do. We're all going to get behind the bed. This room's really big, so when the zoms come at us, we'll then be able to circle around and lock them all in.
FRANCES DEMPSEY: The house isn't in the best structural condition. There are big cracks in the walls, and that creaking probably means the floor is compromised. If any more bodies start stomping in here -
[zombies growl]
PETER LYNNE: See, there are the zoms and they're... coming straight over the bed, so run for the - ! No, no, no! [shouts]
[floor collapses, glass shatters, PETER and FRANCES cough]
AMELIA SPENS: Peter, Five? What happened?
FRANCES DEMSPEY: The floor gave way under the bed! [coughs] The zoms were too much weight. It just smashed down through the house, took the zoms with it.
[house creaks]
PETER LYNNE: This house is definitely unstable. Yep, uh, sounds like the whole place is coming down.
AMELIA SPENS: If you follow the corridor outside the bedroom, you'll find stairs. Take them down to the basement. It's a reinforced garage, should remain intact if the house collapses. Plus, it's where that vault is. Hurry up, you don't have long to grab those charts, and they're absolutely vital.
PETER LYNNE: Oh, also um, there's a horde of zombies chasing us. Come on, run!
~
[zombies moan, house creaks]
PETER LYNNE: Yep, there's the stairs, Five. Straight down, down you go.
FRANCES DEMPSEY: The chandeliers overhead are really shaking. Five, look out!
[chandelier falls, glass shatters]
PETER LYNNE: [laughs] That was close! Chandelier smashed right through the stairs. Could have done without the glass shards in my face, to be perfectly honest. Um, edge around the hole it's left in the stairs. [house creaks, zombies moan] Oh, fantastic. Amelia, we just passed the ground floor and I can hear more zombies barging into the house. So that'll be the horde from outside, attracted to all the noise.
AMELIA SPENS: Just keep following the stairs down. There are exits in the basement, but you have to reach the vault first. Run!
~
PETER LYNNE: Yep, yep, yep. Five, close the door, close the door! [door slams shut] Oh, good. Amelia, we've made it. We're in the basement garage, and the stairwell’s collapsed behind us. Ooh, this is a huge concrete car park. There's tons of fancy cars. There's Bentleys, BMWs... a Model T? All right, just, could you give me a minute, Five? I've just got to pick some chandelier out of my face and eyes.
FRANCES DEMPSEY: That's amazing. Your wounds, the way they're healing. Enhanced cell regeneration? The scientists on Dearg talked about it. [gasps] This is what Van Ark did to you!
PETER LYNNE: Yes, it is. Not really looking forward to meeting him again. Rather pull my kidneys out, honestly. But Janine is not leaving me behind this time. I just got her back and I won't lose her again.
FRANCES DEMSPEY: Dearg was his, you know. I was trapped there for ages. If you're going to a Van Ark lab, I can help. And honestly, I can't stay in Abel. It's funny, when we got security fixed at Dearg, first place I wanted to see was where Alice lived. But being there... a lot of older runners, they look at me, they see her. It's hard.
That's why I really came today. I needed to get out. And I guess I started to feel... if I was going to be her ghost, I might as well run, like she did. I don't want to be a ghost, Peter, and I don't want to go back to Dearg. I want to see the world, find out where I fit in.
AMELIA SPENS: People, you should get moving. That wasn't the only staircase leading to the basement.
PETER LYNNE: Over there, Five, look. It's built into the concrete wall, huge round metal door. That looks like a vault to me. Come on, run!
~
PETER LYNNE: Amelia, we're at the vault door. Here's the C-4. Do the honors, Five. [explosion] [coughs] Okay. Okay, right. Uh, vault is a big gray room with shelves, lots of shelves. Uh, model yachts, dusty piles of... ooh, gold. Five, Frances, look for those charts.
[paper rustles]
FRANCES DEMPSEY: Hey look, found a massive file on a shelf titled Inventory. It's an index of Brewer’s deals and trade contacts. There's a whole chapter on Tunisia.
PETER LYNNE: [laughs] Gotcha! There's tons of nautical charts on this desk under the sextant. [dragging footsteps] Uh, what was that sound? Five, could you go and check behind the shelf of canned food? [zombie groans] Oh, good. Hello! Amelia, we've found Brewer. Looks like he locked himself in here after he'd been bitten, entombed with his wealth like a rubbish pharaoh.
[laughs] Oh good, we've also got a zombie wife and two zombie children in the shadows. Welcome, everyone. He's taken his whole family down with him. [more zombies growl] And that is going to be the rest of the zombies in the garage. So Five, Frances, we're gonna move towards the door. Need an exit now, Amelia.
AMELIA SPENS: There's a ramp on the west end of the car park, leads up to the surface. The shutters open from inside. Hurry, get the charts to safety, run!
~
PETER LYNNE: Okay Five, Frances, I think we've lost the zoms. Street looks clear behind us.
AMELIA SPENS: Well, I'd call that a success. Five even kept the Carthaginian pot. Now we've got the charts, I can have people heading to Tunisia in days.
PETER LYNNE: Janine's finalized the team. It's her, me, Five, Sam, Maxine, and uh, computer expert. Look, I-I am sorry Frances, uh, but honestly, you are safer here. We're going a long way from home, and trust me, Van Ark isn't to be taken lightly.
FRANCES DEMPSEY: Wait a second, look at this. The folder I took, it's full of photos, Brewer logging artifacts he traded. Look at this Roman mosaic from Tunisia, the symbol in the corner.
PETER LYNNE: That is the endless circle from Mor Island.
FRANCES DEMPSEY: That's not all. Brewer's notes say he sold the mosaic to a military base code-named Red Scorpion in Tunisia before Z-Day. He says the commander of the Red Scorpion base scared him, told him not to record any names. Whatever that place is, it's definitely connected to the fungus, and they've known about it since way before we have.

Sweet Harmony
THE OLD SAYING that good fences make good neighbors just isn’t true in the Hostess City, where Southern hospitality means more than just lip service. This was certainly the case for Jeff and Cindy Holker, whose across-the-street neighbor, architect Joye Reno, oversaw a full renovation of their Richmond Hill vacation home.
The Holkers selected Reno for her prowess rather than her proximity, but given that the recent Savannah transplants remained in their home state of Minnesota until the project was complete, Reno’s locale was fortuitous. “I could just walk across the street and check on things,” she says. “I was happy to offer that peace of mind for them.”Such neighborly warmth is part of what drew the Holkers to the Savannah area in the first place. “Friends in Minneapolis looked at us like we were crazy. They said, ‘why don’t you go to Phoenix where it’s 85 degrees every day?’ But Savannah brings good food, good culture, it’s on the water, and the people are great,” Jeff Holker says, noting that his wife’s interest in Civil War history and his love for golf and tennis made for an exceptionally good fit.
While the Holkers dreamed of a vacation home for several years, things fell into place quickly when they toured a three bedroom, three-and-a-half bathroom cottage in
The Ford Plantation in 2017.
It was the second house they looked at, and it had potential in spades: a wide front porch and workable floor plan, an enviable lot backing up onto a public garden, and moss-draped oaks on view from every window. “It’s the sweetest little house,” Reno says, but the homeowners felt (and she agrees) that the interiors “were just kind of blah.”
Reno and interior designer Linda Engler, who has worked with the Holkers on previous projects, spent seven months remodeling the home, infusing a coastal aesthetic and amplifying its secret garden-like charm while also honoring the Holkers’ modern tastes. “The shiplap is a great example, because it has a very precise delineation,” Reno says. “If you look at historic shiplap, it kind of weaves and changes, but instead we made it modern, with clean, sharp lines, and we used it both horizontally and vertically.”

Nearly everybody has got their private rationale with regards to remodel house.
Home Remodeling to Hold Strong Despite Coronavirus
According to survey by LightStream, despite the financial and economical hardships the coronavirus has caused, homeowners are still enthusiastic about improving their living spaces.
While it may seem counterintuitive, a recently completed survey by private loan company LightStream has shown that homeowners are still willing to renovate and remodel their homes during the ongoing coronavirus outbreak. According to LightStream, nearly three out of four homeowners (73%) are planning renovations this year—down only slightly from the company’s January 2020 Home improvement Trends Survey (77%).
In fact, homeowners are continuing or expanding projects (57%) at more than twice the rate of those who are cutting back or canceling altogether (23%).
As a result of the coronavirus, digital conferencing, family video calls and online happy hours have become an integral part of the new normal. In just four months, Zoom’s daily meeting participants jumped from 10 million to more than 300 million. With so many people opening their virtual doors to friends, family and coworkers, many are reevaluating their space.
LightStream recently conducted a home improvement pulse survey through Wakefield Research and found that two-thirds of American homeowners have a part of their house they just don’t like. Additionally, of those who have ever made a video call in their home, 64% have been embarrassed to show parts of their home, including the kitchen and bathroom (each at 20%) and the garage, basement and outdoors (each at 16%). No surprise to anyone who has been working from home with kids: 80% of parents are feeling this way versus 55% of non-parents.
After months of spending nearly all their time with roommates or loved ones, some homeowners indicated that they are ready for some intra-house social distancing. More than a third (36%) reported a lack of personal space in their home, with Millennials feeling the most cramped (62%) compared to Gen Xers (44%) and Baby Boomers (20%). And once again, parents are feeling the squeeze more than non-parents, with 57% reporting they are unable to get personal space compared to 25% of non-parents.
“As a result of COVID-19 shutdowns that closed offices, businesses, schools and more, self-isolation has forced Americans to take a much closer look at their homes,” says Todd Nelson, senior vice president of strategic partnerships at LightStream.
With summer approaching, nearly half of those planning home improvement projects plan to tackle outdoor projects (49%), followed by home repairs (35%), bathrooms (33%) and kitchens (32%).

The very thought of holding a hammer is able to send some homeowners into a fit of cold sweats. This is not necessary any longer as this article will give some basic tips to help out all types of property owners. By using these tips, you will be able to increase the value of your real estate quickly.
Improving the air quality inside your home can be an invaluable home improvement for both your health and the resale value of your house. The first step would be to replace any old carpets or have them professionally cleaned, as they could be hiding contaminants, allergens and unpleasant odors. Secondly, if your budget allows, install an energy efficient air conditioning system.
Do not feel you need to replace a door when it gets a little dirt on it. Instead, remove them from their frame and sand them down. Then paint them with oil-based paint on a roller. For a whole new look, consider changing your doorknobs.
Install large corner shelves in your bedroom just below the ceiling. These shelves can easily be constructed using just a sheet of plywood and a couple of pieces of molding. Cut the shelf large enough that it can be used to hold large comforters and other items that you need to keep up and out of the way.
Candle wax can be hard to remove from tablecloths and other surfaces. A simple fix can be taking a piece of wax paper, laying it over the wax stain and ironing over it with the iron on the highest setting. The iron will melt the wax, causing it to stick to your wax paper.
Store material that you`re using for building between floor joists or ceiling rafters. Long pieces of molding and even larger materials like two by fours can be stored up and out of the way just with a little effort on your part. All you have to do is put some furring strips on floor joists or your rafters.
After all is said and done, you now should have the knowledge you need to make home improvements work for you. Whether you`ve picked up an idea for an entirely new project or just learned some nifty ways to save additional time and money, educating yourself on the topic of home improvement is never a waste of time. Use the information above to guarantee that your next project goes smoothly.

1980s Fixer Upper Home Renovation
Buying a 1980’s fixer upper requires some courage, but more than that, it requires a lot of vision, which can be a little easier if you aren’t afraid of some elbow grease and if you have a talented daughter to help you out! This is exactly what happened to this lucky mother who had her daughter, Shelby of Farmhouse Living, envision the new areas and improve the spaces that needed improvement.
This fixer upper felt outdated but had the perfect layout for Shelby’s parents and all they really needed to do was add new flooring, bring some cozy furniture and accessories (think layered rugs and slipcovered furniture and add a new kitchen – a space that Shelby’s mom can certainly feel proud to call her own!)
The interiors now feel approachable with coastal farmhouse influences and the homeowners are happy with how they turned out.
Find a comfy spot and who knows… maybe this might even inspire you to renovate a fixer upper some day!

Beach House Interior Design ideas
Beautifully designed by the host of HGTV Dream Home 2018, Marnie Oursler of Marnie Custom Homes, this beach house features plenty of coastal interior design ideas.
The 5 bedroom, 5.5 bath beach home is located just blocks from the ocean in Bethany Beach, DE with a sophisticated beach vibe. A calm, neutral palette reminiscent of refreshing salt air mixes with a variety of textures, wood tones, and rough stone, making this the perfect summer getaway.
This coastal home features many unique design elements by Marnie Oursler, including custom built-ins and molding throughout, reclaimed wood accents, hanging beds, exposed beams and French doors leading to a private balcony.
The custom designed kitchen is truly the heart of this home boasting white maple cabinetry, gorgeous white quartzite countertops and adding a touch of glam with a white pearl mosaic backsplash. White Oak floors throughout offer a feeling of casual beach elegance.
Outside the home, the entrance welcomes guests with a front porch and an extra wide blue custom front door, a signature of Marnie Custom Homes. The unique exterior design is accentuated by the cedar siding gives a classic beach house look. This home feels comfortable yet elegant and was built for generations to enjoy.

ages and ages
an alternate universe where chal met temperance a little earlier
temperance and val belong to @celticrune, the conman and lytte belong to @kima-ladyofvord
He is 94. It’s only 6 years shy of being recognised as an adult in his community, but he no longer gives a fuck about anyone acknowledging him there.
(Except his mom. She showed him kindness where no other would.)
The surface world is bright. They warned him,
(an anonymous they, faceless drow telling him “Avoid the sun don’t step into its light you will burn”)
but Chaldira never was one for listening. No, it’s Chal now. He speaks the name out into the open air, tastes the single syllable on his tongue, rolls it over in his mouth.
It’s warm. Not like the Underdark heat, hot air blowing from gaps in the stone walls, steam rising off pools of molten rock, liquid fire flowing like veins. It’s a comfortable warmth, rays upon his skin, and he shoves his sleeves up to his elbows, desperate to experience as much of the sensation as possible.
But it’s blinding, and when the sun fully rises from above the horizon, he stumbles, squinting, eyes watery slits of pink. A group of dwarves passes him, and he can hear their laughter, mocking his trembling steps, like an infant just learning to walk.
He sneers and spits an insult in low gutturals, digs out his cloak and throws it on, hood flipped up to block out the light. It also minimises the feeling of sunlight on his skin, but he will have to deal with this.
Using his staff (rough, unpolished, but functional) as a walking stick, he sets off in the direction of the sunrise, desperate for the taste of his newfound freedom.
***
He is 95. The city of Tergeste is a new experience, coastal and busy, and he slips in like he was meant to be here. His experience with trade
(and he does thank his father for letting him handle ledgers and check books and numbers he does appreciate the trade he was taught even if the thought of the man leaves a bitter taste in his mouth)
serves him well. He is young but he is clever and his tongue is silver. He is exotic and interesting and it’s not hard to start a business in a bustling city. So he does, and he’s good at it, and really, regular merchants are there by the dozen, it’s only logical to sidle into the underbelly, the illicit wares that are harder to come by, and pay better by extension.
And he never did quite like using his magic, having so much power at his fingertips yet not under his control, but it makes things so much easier if he can weave a spell and make someone think what he wants, fix a broken deal, gain the advantage.
And if there are consequences, well, he does plenty fine in a direct fight.
***
He is 97. She is younger than him in years, but clearly more mature, put-together and beautiful. She enthrals him, draws him in with her words and her carefully painted smile, and he was always weak for power.
She’s heard of him, she says.
Hopefully, only the nice things, he jests.
She’s interested in him.
He tells her it’s likewise.
It makes her laugh, and he leans in and smiles.
She takes him home.
He doesn’t argue.
***
He is 102. Perhaps 103. The passing of the century mark went unnoticed. Who is there to prove himself to anymore?
He doesn’t like the passing of time much. It only serves to remind him how long-lived he is; how much he has that Temperance does not.
He can give her anything: his life, his devotion, his lips and fingers, gentle touches and brushing kisses. He cannot give her years, so he tells himself to stop counting.
(He keeps track for her, a beautiful bouquet at every year-mark, standing out proud and bright against the backdrop of gifts from noblemen and admirers. They may shower her in opulence, dress her in jewels and gems, but he knows he is worth more to her than any of it. She tells him, so he knows.)
She has her birds, her façade of obedient orphan girls, little swifts and sparrows taken in by the goodness of her heart. She has her daughter, the little raven on her shoulder who whispers secrets in her ear. But Chal is the one who stands at her side, who gets to hold her arm and lead her down the stairs and tuck stray hairs behind her ear and kiss her, and she pets his hair and tells him how pretty he is
(and for a moment the strong tenor of her voice morphs into a gentler soprano, a hand stroking his long hair, a barrier against the harsh tones of a father, “my pretty girl, my sweet Chaldira”)
and he preens like a peacock, its wings voluntarily clipped so it can stay at its master’s side.
After all, he hardly has a need to fly when she can make his heart soar.
***
He doesn’t know. He doesn’t think he cares. But years have passed
(the bouquets blur together, but it must have been a decade at least)
and little has changed. He is content and happy and Temperance kisses him every night and he shares her bed as she sleeps and he stares at her, or at the ceiling, or he reads, dreaming himself away into other lands, other worlds.
Not that he’d want to go anywhere but the sweet comfort of her bedsheets.
He is not her spy, but he is not deaf. Rumours spread quickly, after all, and soon a mysterious figure known only by the moniker of ‘the Conman’ is known by all in Tergeste.
And Temperance obsesses. She rarely speaks of it, and so he does not ask, but he can see the way her eyes light up when a fresh snippet of news reaches her ears.
And as her fascination grows, so does his. It is hard not to be interested in a man without a name.
And so, when Temperance arranges a meeting
(and she did not technically tell him he was not welcome)
he curls around the corner, wide-eyed in curiosity.
He doesn’t quite know just how the meeting goes, but it hardly matters when the man slips out of the room, after, and brushes by him, and stops.
Turns and
(“And what have we here?” he asks, and Chal freezes, head ducking down, so he can peek out from under his hair only. “One of Temperance’s birds, no? How curious to find you out here, lurking in the dark. Do birds not prefer the light of day?”)
Temperance exits her office, raising thin eyebrows at the sight of them. Her eyes meet his.
He holds his breath. The passing of time does not interest him, but he counts the seconds nevertheless. They seem like small pockets of eternity in the dead silence that fills the hallway.
And she excuses the both of them, and she leads him to the bedroom as Val slips out of the shadows and leads the Conman away.
She does not berate him, but the disapproval in her eyes hurts worse any words can.
***
He is older. That much he knows for sure.
Temperance passes the mark from beautiful young adult to stunning mature woman. Chal does not change much, he thinks. His hair grows longer, and he has it cut. His eyes are bright and curious, and if they dim a little when she tells him to stay in the bedroom while she meets with the Conman,
(the obsession fades, and the flames of rivalry flare up. He can see it in her eyes every time she talks to him.)
well, she wasn’t looking. But he does meet the Conman again, and again, and it isn’t until Temperance accuses him of seeking the man out, that he realises the man might have been seeking him out.
It’s confusing, but it is exciting. The Conman is intelligent, and interesting, and fun to talk with. He knows a little bit about everything, it seems
(until he confesses, in a quiet corner of the house, that he doesn’t know much about the Underdark. Chal gives him a sad little smile and says he doesn’t, either.
He doesn’t think the Conman buys it, but they have precious little time, so he doesn’t press.)
and Chal learns something new every time they meet. Bits of Dwarven and Draconic, a new cardgame Chal did not get his hands on yet, the history of a small port town not far from Tergeste.
Temperance does not like it. He knows, he knows, but the temptation is always there, and he kneels on her carpet and tells her he won’t, not again, but the Conman has a way with words that lures him in like she once did.
When their lips press together in the sweet embrace of infidelity, he tells himself he wont take it any further.
Temperance ensures he does not.
***
In the grand scale of things, he is young, but as he stands at her side, amidst the crowd, he feels old and weary. At his other shoulder, Val stands, watchful, the perfect daughter and a silent guard. At Temperance’s left, Lytte, the sheen of his own charm putting blue highlights in her purple irises.
There is quiet chatter, the creaking of wood. A condemned man walking to his death with his head held high, but Chal cannot meet his eyes. Knows that he doomed him, that, even as his presumed crimes are read out to the audience, the crime that brought him to this fate was
(stolen kisses, gentle touches, shared moments on borrowed sheets, sneaking around after the lights go down, soft laughter and whispered conversations)
love.
The wood creaks.
He turns, lets himself be tucked against Temperance’s side, lets her murmur to him, his eyes closing.
When he opens them back up, the sky is streaked with pink
(and so are his eyes, different shades clashing and contrasting)
and he lets himself be led away.

Beautiful Homes of Instagram Our “Beautiful Homes of Instagram” is going all the way to Australia today! I can’t tell you enough how much I love that country! I have many amazing readers from there and have even had some clients from Australia and because of that, this new “BHI” feels extra special for me. Sharing Ali’s, from @urban_farmhouse_build, stunning newly built home will be a treat for all of us! Ali and I have been talking about this feature for some time now. You guys have no idea how hard she worked to have her house ready. She really wanted the pictures to be good and she did all she could to make the home look amazing. I honestly can’t thank her enough. The feature couldn’t get any better, Ali! As you will see, the soothing color palette makes Ali’s entire home feel calm, serene and stress-free and who wouldn’t love to live in a place that has this kind of feeling? Read on to know more about this talented homeowner and her inspiring home. “My name is Ali and I was so delighted when Luciane invited me to share our home with you on Home Bunch. I have always loved interior design and architecture, and have so enjoyed the creative process of designing and building our family home. We live in a small town in the Southern Highlands (1.5 hour drive south of Sydney, Australia) with our 3 children. We had been lucky enough to have the opportunity to build our last house, which we loved, but it was a large country block further out of town, and we found that the long trek from home to school was wearing thin. We dreamed of finding land closer to town, but that still had a rural feel and open vistas that we had so enjoyed in our last home. We finally found what we were looking for, but there were a couple of hurdles to overcome – it was more land than we wanted to look after, and it was prone to flooding. Two years later, after a subdivision and endless earthworks, we could finally start building our home. I often think what on earth we did for inspiration before the internet. Sites like Pinterest, Houzz and Home Bunch where a great source for ideas, and my husband John and I luckily shared the same vision and kept saving the same pictures – white board and batten modern farmhouses. Whilst a common feature in the American and New Zealand houses we loved, board and batten is not often used as a building material in Australia and we were keen to use something a little different. Standing seam roofs were also a regular feature in our “dream home” pictures, and an overall aesthetic that was a clean, contemporary interpretation of classic farmhouse style. Luckily we found an architect who was great at translating our dreams into affordable reality and we finally started building about 2 years ago. The build, although slower than we hoped, went very smoothly and we moved in a little over a year ago. The process of decorating has been a slow one, and is still not finished! We had some favourite pieces of furniture from our old house, but much of it didn’t fit in size or style, or had not survived the young children stage. Finding the time to source the finishing touches remains a challenge, but I’m trying to be patient! It’s such a lovely house to live in, bright, cozy and comfortable, and we are so enjoying just being here. The garden is also very much a work in progress. We planted a “stage one” garden when we moved in so as to have some instant grass for the kids (and pets!), but plan to expand on it with more beds and trees in the coming months. A small guest/pool house is also in the pipeline for the beginning of next year. John and I have so enjoyed the process of building our home that since finishing it last year, we have joined forces in a commercial venture, subdividing another block of land and building 3 spec homes. They are in a similar “modern country” style and have been a wonderful opportunity to use many of the ideas and finishes that we didn’t get a chance to use in our house. They were well received and sold quickly, so being the gluttons for punishment that we clearly are, we have recently purchased a new block of land in town and look forward to next year’s project of building two more cottages (past project photos are on Instagram @copelanddevelopments). I find that my style is constantly evolving, so it’s very rewarding having the opportunity to start from scratch and design something new each time. When I’m not designing houses I love to paint, and I’m also involved in local theatre – acting, directing and set designing. It’s taken me until my 40s to realise that as long as I’m doing something creative, I’m happy!” Beautiful Homes of Instagram White Modern Farmhouse Black Front Door Paint Color: Dulux Domino. Paving is flamed granite. Front door lanterns from Beacon Lighting – Southhampton Large Wall Bracket. Farmhouse Garage Paint colour is Dulux “White Verdict” Half Strength. Barn lighting from Barnlight Electric. Kitchen Having had a white kitchen in our last 2 houses, I was keen to do something different. I had always loved Martha Stewart’s Bedford Grey kitchen, but as it is unavailable in Australia, went through endless paint samples trying to find a similar shade of “greige”. We used Dulux “Narrow Neck” in Double strength. Countertop The countertops are 40mm honed Carrara marble. Breakfast Nook This stunning grey kitchen opens to a bright breakfast nook with banquette. Isn’t it dreamy? Faucet & Backsplash Tapware is Perrin & Rowe “Io” in satin nickel from The English Tapware Company. Similar backsplash tile can be found here. Lighting Lights are the Eldridge Pendant from Ballard Designs. Flooring & Hardware The flooring is engineered oak in the colour “Cannes” from Preferences Flooring – similar can be found here. Handles and pull are the “Duluth” range in satin nickel from Restoration Hardware. Open Feel The kitchen opens to family room with board and batten fireplace and vaulted tongue and groove ceiling. This is just stunning! Layout A peninsula divides the kitchen from the dining area. Dining Room Dining room light is the Large Rectangular Linen Shade Pendant from Restoration Hardware in “Sand”. Living Room We love the high raked ceiling in this space and the open floor plan, which helps the room feel bright and spacious. The barn doors are a favourite feature and were custom made for us by the builder. Wall lights above oak shelving are Boston Library lights in antique nickel from Circa Lighting. Fireplace is faced with Buxeuil Limestone. Paint Color Paint colour is Dulux “Snowy Mountains” Half Strength. Linen sofas are from Molmic Sofas. Pillows Pillows from Boho Pillow and Walter G. Lounge Room We call this our “night room” as it is were John and I retreat to after the kids are in bed. I wanted to make it more intimate and cozy than the living room by using timber paneling and textured wallpaper. The furniture is all from our old house which we have had some time. I’m hoping to eventually update some of the pieces, but in the meantime, it’s a very comfortable place to curl up and watch TV. Similar coffee table can be found here. Decor Wallpaper is Thibaut Coastal Sisal in “Aqua”. Paintwork is Dulux “Snowy Mountains” Half Strength. Wood weave blinds are the “le Blinde” range from Peter Meyer. Linen curtains from Raffles Textiles. Sisal carpet from Natural Floor Coverings. Coffee Table Decor I love how Ali decorated her tray. Powder Room I wanted to do something whimsical and fun in the powder room and so took the opportunity to use one of my favourite wallpapers, the “Woods” design by Cole & Son. Similar round mirror can be found here. Flooring In keeping with the monochrome palate, I used a small gloss white penny round tiles on the floor and a black and nickel “Bistro” wall sconce from Restoration Hardware. Snug This is what we call the kids hang out space. I recently purchased these gorgeous pillows from Boho Pillow, which has really made the space. I’m really hoping they look after them! I feel so Blessed because I could finally rest a little during this weekend. I had a very bad cold last week and this forced me to take a break from everything, which made me realize how necessary it is to slow down a little and enjoy the small things – such as staying in bed and see the clouds moving from your window. When was the last time you let the time go by without rushing? And at the end, why are we rushing so much? What is this race all about? I am learning that I need to stop accepting external demands. I will do more of what’s important to myself. There’s nothing wrong on reinforcing on some boundaries from time-to-time, you know? I am starting this week worrying less and living more and I hope you all can come along with me… Have a Blessed week, my friends! with Love, Luciane from HomeBunch.com Interior Design Services within Your Budget Come Follow me on Come Follow me on Get Home Bunch Posts Via Email Contact Luciane “For your shopping convenience, this post might contain links to retailers where you can purchase the products (or similar) featured.
