Beck’s Café and Bakery, 16101 Ventura Blvd Encino, CA 91436
Beck’s opened recently…heard it was Israeli, so my interest was piqued. It’s more of a café than a bakery. Maybe they had more baked goods in the morning but in the afternoon, I only saw some bourekas, muffins, and whole decorated cakes. The café had a definite Israeli feel; most of the customers seemed to be Israeli. It’s 100% glatt kosher.
The menu includes Israeli breakfast, shakshuka, avocado toast, pizza, pasta, salad, and lots of fish options. The smoothies seemed very popular. Everyone ordered one!
Individual shakshuka ($21.99): Homemade spicy tomato sauce with onion, cilantro, and garlic, 2 eggs (your way), baked in round challah bread, served with Israeli salad and housemade pickles. I had to take it to go because I didn’t have time to eat it there. Unfortunately, the eggs kept cooking in the hot sauce so the yolks were no longer runny but that wasn’t their fault. The sauce was quite spicy and quite garlicky. I liked how it was on the chunkier side. The round challah looked like a wreath of 6 round rolls covered in sesame seeds. The challah was soft, warm and chewy – also sweeter than regular bread. So good dipped in the tomato sauce. The Israeli salad was fresh and chopped into small bits: cucumber, tomato, onions, olives, parsley. The pickled cabbage was sour and crunchy.
It took almost 40 minutes for the food to be ready. She apologized and said they were short-staffed.
The café was cute – lots of fake plants and a wall with a neon sign. There’s also a large outdoor patio.
They have lunch specials Monday – Friday starting at 12 PM. Beck’s Café is in an outdoor mall. Parking in the area is just about impossible and the parking garage charges $3 for 2 hours with validation.
4.5 out of 5 stars

“Ellie, sweetie, don’t touch that.”
You were working behind the counter, rubbing raw dough and flour off on your apron, rushing around the shop to tend to the various customers. While specializing in baked treats, you were the main mistress, while Marilyn focused on baking and cooking up breakfast and lunch for eager customers.
Elaine Beck, a sweet girl of eight years, had recently been fostered by Marilyn. Marilyn, when not focusing on Elaine’s schoolwork, would bring her to the shop to watch over her.
You loved children, dearly, but it was difficult having a sweet-obsessed child in a bakery where the goods could easily be yanked. You find yourself aging more and more every time you told Elaine to keep her hands to herself.
Eyeing the clock, you rolled your bottom lip with your teeth, staring out the window before Marilyn caught your attention, pulling out crepes for a frequent suit-clad visitor. “Time goes slower when you’re staring at the hands, sweetpea.”
“Sorry,” you mumbled, shaking your head as you organized dollar bills into the register. “I didn’t mean to seem like I’m impatient for my lunch off… I’m just…”
A hand caressed your shoulder, and Marilyn pulled you in to kiss your head, you groaning shortly after and wiping the back of your wrist against your forehead. “Mary! Your red lipstick never gets off!”
Marilyn gave a hearty laugh, ruffling your done-up hair. “Y’er a sweet thing, sunshine. He’s gonna be here, and you two are gonna have fun on your lil’ church date.”
“It’s not a date,” you emphasized, crouching to pull out the baked muffins, “No one goes to church for a date. I asked to come with to hear about that strange preacher.”
The older woman placed a hot coffee in front of a woman, who doused it in sugar, returning to you with a conflicted expression. “Well, I don’t want you stirrin’ up trouble, sweetpea. You’re important around here. You’re important to me.” She smiled at you, hazel eyes shiny with worry. “Don’t want you getting involved in shady business ‘cause of some boy…”
You stared at her, cocking your head idly towards the back, and she sighed and you both made your way there. “What’s your problem with Russell?” You could not imagine Arvin having bad intentions for you. It had been about a month or so since he had come in that rainy afternoon, and since then being in Ohio hasn’t seemed that bad. He had made no moves or adjustments towards you that were defined as uncomfortable.
“Nothin’, nothin’, he’s a sweet boy. Conflicted, but sweet,” she continued, “Y’ain’t wanna be caught up with those who be unsure of themselves…” Marilyn trailed off, wiping her hands with a cloth that had pies stitched onto it, “Goin’ to church ain’t like you, darling, I don’t want you to be changin’ yourself. You’re good just the way you are and don’t let no fool of a man or lass tell ‘ya otherwise. If this boy makes you happy—”
Interrupting, you said, “It has nothing to do with… with romantics, ma’am. I want to have faith,” you mumbled as you turned away from her, pretending to be busy with cleaning silverware. “I want to believe. I want to have a friend.”
Silence fell, and Marilyn gave you a smile with the fruit red lips of hers. “M’kay, darling. You won me over.”
Grinning at her, the bell jingled, and you peered over to see Arvin walking in, tipping a hat to Elaine, who was bouncing in her booth and talking to him excitedly.
Marilyn moved forward, and you leaned back, holding your hands up. “No kisses.”
She sighed, amused, and gave you a bear hug instead.
You pulled your apron off and hung it up before exiting the backroom and curving around the corner, smiling at Arvin, who met your eye and returned the gesture.
“Nice to see ‘ya on this beautiful Sunday,” you spoke up, swiping the sleeves of your dress.
Arvin’s expression softened, and he moved his hand up to your forehead, catching you by surprise. His thumb rolled over your forehead, wiping at it twice before raising his eyebrows, “I’m guessing sweet ol’ Marilyn McCann didn’t let’cha go without a cherrybomb kiss of hers.” He revealed the red stain on his thumb, and you whipped your head back to see Marilyn giving a knowing smirk at you before fixing up dishes. You looked back to him.
“Thank you for that… I would’ve been so embarrassed walking into a church with that on my face,” you sighed.
“Not a problem.”
“Don’t be gone too long, sissy!” You both looked over to see Elaine pouting at you, “I wan’ my icecream. You promised.”
“I did. I will do just that for you, baby,” you said, poking her nose. “If Mary says you behaved, you’ll get an extra scoop with any topping you want. How’s that?”
“Good!”
Exiting the premises, him holding the door open for you politely. Thanking him under your breath, you walked down the sidewalk towards his car.
“New dress?” He gestured to your fit and you looked down at it before smiling.
“Indeed. You give me such hefty tips,” you pointed out, bumping your shoulder with his, his ears turning pinker while avoiding eye contact with you purposefully. “I also needed to dress nice for church.”
Arvin rubbed the back of his neck as he opened the front door for you. “Well, I don’t really want much. Mind as well give the favor onto someone else.”
Once you both settled into the car, Arvin opened with another conversation. “How’s lil’ Elaine holding up? She seemed chipper than ever in there.”
The car started, and you pondered about the sweet girl. She was only fostered because both of her parents managed to go missing, dropping the young thing at Marilyn’s to be babysat and vanishing. “I don’t know. She hardly ever mentions her parents. I don’t think she remembers them at all, she calls me ‘sissy’ and Mary ‘mama.’ I don’t even live with them.”
“You seem to be the kinda sis that spoils,” Arvin pointed out with a grin, causing a feigned offended gasp from you. “Two scoops of icecream for such a tiny thing? She’ll explode. Poor girl.”
You shrugged. “Keeps her little fingers out of the pies.”
The radio played a sweet Paul Anka song, Puppy Love. You swayed to the beat very slightly.
—You'll be back (you'll be back)...
“So uh… why church, Y/N?”
...in my arms (in my arms)...
Glancing at him, you shrugged. “Why not? I want to see what the rage about that preacher is about.” Arvin winced at this.
Once again...
Arvin licked his lips very slightly, eyeing the rearview mirror before returning his eyes to the road. “Y’told me you’re no girl of faith. No loony preacher is worth that.”
Someone help me, help me please. Is the answer, is it up above?
“I also said I’d do it if God brought me something good,” you pointed out, leaning towards him with a finger up. You then leaned your shoulder against the door, staring out the window, saying carefully, “And he did. I keep my promises.”
How can I, oh how can I ever tell them?
“This is not a puppy love…” you sang under your breath, turning your head to look at Arvin, whose glance quickly skewed back to the road. “Do you like this song?” You asked.
Arvin shrugged, quirking his lips up. “I uh… I’m not really a music guy.”
You blinked, raising your eyebrows. “Not a music guy? Hm, that’s fair.”
“Can’t really relate with all they sing about,” Arvin explained, “usually ‘bout God or a lover leavin’ them. Not my interest.”
Now, some backstory. You wouldn’t let this opportunity go to waste.
“Are you implying the one and only Arvin Russell has never had an inamorata?” You grinned, placing your cheek against your palm.
Arvin rolled his eyes. “Nah, don’t be actin’ like that, Y/N.”
“Is that a yes?”
“It’s a ‘I’ve been too busy carin’ for my family to even think about messin’ around with a pretty face,’” he corrected, tilting his head at you. “That’s all.”
You felt yourself grow concerned and conflicted instead of amused. Biting the inside of your cheek, you don’t know if this man had any hobbies that didn’t include beating up assholes that hurt his poor sister. You scratched at the nape of your neck before deciding to speak up, plopping your hand in your lap. “Arvin, is there anything you’ve done just for fun and not just because your family compelled you to? Anything for yourself?”
Arvin looked at you, his eyes round, tightening his grip on the wheel. “I’ve… ah…” he pondered before his face turned more red, and you started to wonder what exactly was going on in his head. Was it something… illegal? Or shameful in the eyes of the town’s Lord? “...I go to the bakery to see you. For myself.”
...Well. You pinched your dress, clenching your teeth together and looking at the road.
“I didn’t mean to make you uncomfortable, if— if you are, I just—”
“You were the good thing God gave me,” you spoke up suddenly, squeezing your eyes shut, “That’s why I’m going to church. You… you’re the good thing that makes me want to have faith,” you explained, catching him from the corner of his eye, seeing a distant look on his face.
You gave a laugh and half-heartedly shrugged your shoulders. “Now we evened each other’s uncomfortable comments out,” you playfully spoke. “So… no worries.”
Arvin pulled into a long yard while the car slowed into a long drawl. With this, he looked at you, and gave a smile that showed his white teeth.
“I think you’re a funny girl, Y/N.”
—
The preaching was over, and everyone was left outside, mostly indulging in conversation. It was a nice day out— sunny, clouds dotting the skyline, a sweet breeze to ease the baring sun. You were currently trapped in a conversation with a rather old lady who was very prominent in getting to know the citygirl.
You mentioned Manhattan and purposefully avoided your roots regarding wealth and your orphan status. Luckily, you didn’t need to speak much, the lady named Darla was more than eager to give her thoughts on everything.
“The new pastor, Teagardin, he’s a sweet man ain’t he?” She smiled, wringing her hands together, “If I were younger…”
You paled at the implication, giving a nervous smile. “He seems like a sweet man.”
“I’d sure hope so.” You turned around to see Preston Teagardin approach you with a smile. “How do you do, miss? Haven’t seen you here before.”
You nodded. “It’s my first time going to this church.”
Preston tilted his head only slightly. “Is that so? Can I catch your name?”
“Y/N.”
He licked his lips, looking at the old lady and raising his brows to give a friendly, polite expression. “Y/N, ain’t that a pretty name, Darla?” Darla nodded. “Well, Y/N, I wanna see you around here more often. Having a fresh face other than mine in this church is sure nice.”
“Regardless of my city heritage?” You decided to tease. While the comment was meant to be lighthearted, a growing resentment was laced behind your words, exhausted from the odd treatment from townspeople.
Preston gave a small laugh underneath his breath. “Nothin’ wrong with being born urban.” He looked at you, and you heard your name. Glancing to your side, Arvin was approaching, a ginger girl at his side.
The ginger girl made eye contact with Preston, and she quickly shied away from it. You paid it no mind, but it was definitely something that would become relevant later on, you’re sure.
“This is my sister, Lenora,” Arvin spoke up, and you watched his eyes lock onto the priest’s for a moment. Preston walked away.
Lenora looked at you and gave a simper. “Hi, Y/N. Arvin’s talked about you…”
Arvin pursed his lips. “Lenora—”
“No, it’s okay,” you said, amused at the sister-brother banter. “He’s mentioned you before Lenora. I hear you like to read, care to give me a checklist of books sometime?”
Lenora lit up. “That… yeah, I can do just that. Right when I get home, I will.”
You smiled. Arvin cleared his throat, placing his hands in his pockets as he spoke to his sister, “Lenora, why don’t you check on grandma?” Lenora scurried off. When the two of you were alone, Arvin then murmured to you, “Y’don’t have to do anythin’ you don’t want to, Y/N. I know Lenora ain’t the most bright in the bunch, but—”
“I’ve been where she was,” you murmured to him, watching his gaze slowly fall from Lenora’s retreating figure to yours, brown eyes suffused golden beneath the luminous sun. “It’s all right. I actually do like reading, Arvin.” Arvin’s lips moved to the side of his face. Taking in his features, you felt your heart race a bit at what you were contemplating on doing, but you did it regardless. Your hand moved from your side to bury your fingers in his hair, grinning while feeling the slick strands against your skin. “It’s weird seeing you without that hat on.”
Arvin slumped a bit, attempting to swat your hand away. “Alright, alright, I get it,” he sighed. Though, from the look on his face, he was heavily entertained. “I know. I’ll put the cap back on.”
“No,” you spoke up. Your hand survived Arvin’s waving and ruffled the hair, loose strands cascading the frame of his face. “I like it.”
The boy you were endlessly teasing gawked at you while a bashful expression crossed his features. He sucked on his tongue before murmuring, “...That’s… ah, thank you.”
Glancing at your clock, your eyebrows raised. “I have to go. Lunch break is over… was over two minutes ago.”
Arvin gave a sheepish curve of his lips. “I’ll drive ‘ya home.”
The drive back was lighter than the drive there, until the new priest was mentioned. “Y’don’t trust that preacher guy, do you?” Arvin’s voice was bitter.
“...He seems…” you started, wincing, “I’m not sure. He’s a confident man, I’ll say that. I don’t know much about him to make a judgement.”
Arvin stopped the car in front of the diner. It was abrupt, sudden, and it took you by surprise. Your eyes traveled over to your friend who seemed to be seething underneath his skin. “Arvin?” You asked quietly.
A few glances towards you and he finally decided to face you with a lack of a smile. “S’all fine. You’re late, go do your work.”
Unable to correlate words with your sudden concern over his state of mind, you didn’t bother to acknowledge anything. “Okay…” you murmured, stepping out of the car, giving a wave to Arvin who only nodded his head towards you and drove off.
You watched his car vanish into the distance of the town. Wind blew past you, petting at your bare shins, and you rubbed your upper arm before hearing muffled crashing within the shop and a very harsh command of ‘Ellie!”.
—
The day Lenora died was quiet.
People weren’t rushing to the church, rushing to the Russell household, rushing down the streets, no one was rushing anywhere. It was a quiet day. The streets were more bare than usual, but perhaps it was only a lazy Sunday where nothing really mattered aside from church, the one day Lenora had not gone.
Watching her body fade into the ground wrapped snug in a casket, you felt the paper in your dress shuffle with the wind, scribbles of book titles Lenora suggested you before her untimely death.
Brave enough to glance in Arvin’s direction, too shy to cock your head, you noticed his mouth fit into a tight line, eyes swollen but with no sign of tears. It seems like he has already cried his fair share. Grandma Emma was weeping, her shoulders shaking as her brother held them.
The sun had gone dark, and you sat on a bench with Arvin, who had shared little to no words with you the entire day. Cars would woosh past and it seemed like the entire world was rotating just the same without the dear, sweet step-sister of Russell. The story had been tense, a little too much for you, the superstition that she was pregnant with the priest’s baby and had been encouraged to take it out, even at the cost of her life.
You gave a shaky exhale while the night’s frozen air pricked at your bare skin.
“You don’t need to be with me, Y/N,” Arvin’s accent-heavy voice murmured from the right of you, “I’m alright.”
That’s a load of bullshit. You knew that. You knew nothing about this was okay. You’d heard about Arvin’s parents before, you didn’t need anything more to know that this was opening some deep wounds the boy had thought he had stitched closed a long time ago.
“No, you’re not,” you replied.
There was nothing said after that. Arvin didn’t even look at you with an incredulous expression or open his mouth to disagree. There was no movement, no anything, as the world continued to turn, the stars continuing to move above the two of you.
It seemed unfair. It was unfair that the world kept moving.
You pulled out the list of books she had recommended you. Her handwriting was surely girlish, curly with hearts for dots, but it was perfect for her type of character. Lenora was a good girl. You felt your thumb trail against the ink stains. You didn’t know her too well, you’d be exaggerating your pain if you said this was the worst thing to happen to you, but it was definitely a loss on the town’s behalf, and most importantly, Arvin’s behalf.
“She was lonely.” Looking over, you saw Arvin staring down at your lap where the somewhat crinkled paper was. “She never defied her faith, Y/N. She was just lonely.”
Her fidelity was admirable. Some part of you knew Arvin wasn’t talking to you, though, more so at. You gave a nod at him, his sad eyes meeting up with yours, and you knew at that moment his heart had been broken into a million pieces. You heard him sniffle and the street lamps reflected the water building at the top of his lower eyelids. He moved his bruised knuckles underneath his nose and you were a witness to his throat closing on itself.
This wasn’t bold. This was a peace offering. You moved to wrap your arms around his shoulders, pulling him close to you in a hug.
Arvin was frozen still, tense underneath your hold, halting in his breath. You didn’t care if you were breaking boundaries. You didn’t care if this was something he said he didn’t need. You needed it, too, you needed to see him recover.
Unbeknownst to you, he would actually consider all the little possibilities with this hug. His arms wrapped around your waist as he buried his face against the crook of your neck. You could hear quiet struggling exhales and wetness seeping into your dress. You didn’t care for the dress.
This wasn’t a grown man crying, you noticed. This was a little boy. The way he squeezed against you, lightly rubbing his nose against your skin and giving off quiet whimpers of defeat. The world had wronged him too much. You didn’t know everything, but it felt like the tears falling from his face had infinite knowledge that you didn’t need to be told. This wasn’t the first tragedy for Arvin. For him, he most likely believed it was just another dot on the list of infinite sadness.
“Arvin,” you were quiet to say, “come to my place. It’s quiet. Let me drive.”
Arvin had no disagreements. He was in no mindset to put on his tough façade. You drove the two of you to your apartment, never leaving Arvin’s side as you both stepped up the stairs and unlocked the door.
You didn’t really know what to do from there. You both watched television on your cheap furniture, and as the night went on and mindless conversations passed between the both of you, Arvin had gotten closer. His eyes were sore and at the most random moments you could see a tear roll down his cheek. He gave no reaction to it.
“I’m tired,” Arvin breathed from beside you.
You stared at the television while leaning against the couch’s arm. “That’s fine. I can show you to my room, if you’d like to lay on the bed—”
A presence was prominent beside you. You felt Arvin lean against you and rest his head on your shoulder. “The couch is fine,” he whispered. “This is fine.”
In any other circumstance, you know Arvin would’ve never put you in this position. Though, you didn’t mind this, not at all, keeping in mind you knew he just needed a comforting presence after Lenora. You were more than eager to be his anchor however.
Moving your hand up to his capless head, finding your fingers carding through his smooth hair, you continued to watch the television in silence. This is fine, you repeated in your head. It’s going to be fine.

The Brittle Family
Felt like getting some artwork for my characters from Brittle Bonds. The Brittle Brothers, along with their aunt. Artwork is by the amazing @harchibudytgorichi From left to right!
Bruno Brittle (17) the eldest of the Brittle Brothers, and pretty mature for his age. Having been used to helping out his aunt look after the others, he kindly but firmly keeps the rest of his brothers in line. Despite this he tends to be laid back, upbeat, and positive. He is very sociable and tends to be looked at as a role model by many. He’s a superstar athlete and plays a number of sports. Currently he's seen as the top player on the football team and is being offered a scholarship. Is just a little worried about leaving home, but is sure his brothers will be okay without him.
Bruce Brittle (16) the second oldest and tallest of the bunch. Unlike his older brother, Bruce is pretty anti-social and prefers to spend time with either himself or his family. He doesn’t talk much (barely at all) and is usually always tagging along with Bruce. He may be quiet, but he has the worst temper among the siblings and is the last one you want to risk ticking off. Though he doesn’t have the same love for sports (save volleyball) he usually joins any team along with Bruno just to pass the time. His real passion is for computer design and robotic engineering. Is seen as difficult to deal with by most, but isn’t really all the complicated as long you give him space.
Ben Brittle (15) the third oldest of the Brittle brothers. While not as distant as Bruce, he also tends to be on the anti-social side. Struggles with social skills, and likes to stick to his small group of friends and family. Loves music and plays a number of instruments, but is a rocker at his core. He also has a talent for cooking and does most of the baking at his aunt’s cafe. Tends to overthink things and get into his own head. Like his brother Bruce he suffers from ADHD and sometimes finds himself zoning out when he gets too bored or too into a certain task.
Beck Brittle(14) the fourth Brittle Brother. Just a bit on the devious side and probably the most sociable of the group. Spends most of his time showing off his card tricks and trying to win over girls. Loves telling puns (much to his brothers annoyance) and hopes to be a famous card magician some day. A little jealous of Bruno and Bruce since ‘they got all the good genes’ but doesn’t try to dwell on it too much.
Billy & Brady Brittle (12) the twins, and the youngest of the Brittle Brothers. The two are both energetic and love burning off their seemingly limitless energy. Mostly through sports, but also sometimes through pestering their brothers and classmates. Think that they are the best at everything, and though they get along great they constantly compete with one another. Being the youngest they don’t really have any memories of their parents before their aunt took them in. Get curious about their mother sometimes, but their brothers and aunt don’t like talking about her.
Berta Brittle, who took in her nephews after her brother passed away and her sister-in-law up and vanished on them. She was fairly young herself when she took them in and though she had an interest in MMA she ended up dropping it so she had more time to look after them. She now runs a bakery in Royal Woods called “Suamalie Suamalie”. Confident, tough, but caring, she does everything she can to look out for and help her little ‘warriors’. All of the brothers respect her love and respect her to no end, and there is no argument that she’s the head of the family.

WASHINGTON DC RESTAURANTS I only picked one restaurant for each country, but there may be several for that particular ethnic cuisine. #CommunitySpirits: Greyhound on the Green.
#CommunitySpirits is a series of interviews with businesses that have been helping local people during this difficult time.
On St James St in Clerkenwell, sits independent cafe The Greyhound on the Green. I speak to Becks, one of the owners, about what she and fellow owner Ross have been doing to support residents.
Tell me about your business’ history.
I contacted the council about renting a little spot, went for an interview and to present my vision and we went from there, opening in April 2019.
Our cafe is tiny, we only have outside seating. But from the beginning my focus was about using fresh, local food at accessible prices. We only work with like minded businesses who share our ethics when it comes to helping others and being kind to the environment. Our coffee comes from Redemption Roasters, we get our milk the old school way (in glass bottles from the milkman) and bread from a local indie bakery. We make everything from scratch, including cakes and brownies! We have a wonderful loyal customer base who have helped build a magical community around our little hut.
How was your business affected by the CV-19 outbreak?
We felt pretty early on that it was the responsible thing to temporarily close, and we're glad we did. We work in such a small space that we just couldn’t guarantee our own or our customers’ safety. But it was the hardest decision I've ever made.
What are you doing to help your community during this time?
Sadly we can't offer anything to our cafe community, which breaks my heart as these people have helped us grow from the very beginning.
We work in Clerkenwell but we live in Highgate. We weren’t comfortable commuting to work on public transport as we don't drive; we need to keep these spaces as safe as possible for our wondrous key workers. We decided to try and support our suppliers, help keep ourselves afloat (we are the unlucky 5% who are not entitled to anything from the government) and help those in isolation in our wonderful local community.
So we've set up a zero contact delivery service selling things like Oatly, eggs, flour, coffee. pasta, cleaning products and a super essential - chocolate! We take payment online, I pack the order and Ross cycles it, he calls the customer from the pavement and gives them a wave so that they can safely collect their order from the doorstep.
We've remained true to our values, especially in what we are selling. For example, our antibac spray is actually a concentrated capsule with zero plastic that you shake up in a bottle of water. Now is a scary time but it doesn't mean we have to forget about the environmental impact of our actions.
Why did you decide to set up this service?
We had to do something. Overnight, we went from having a small business (which wasn't exactly profitable but we could pay our suppliers and pay our bills) to having nothing. It was really frightening and we couldn’t have anticipated it. That aside, it's been a godsend to keep busy and feel helpful. We have customers who are carers or single parents, who can't queue outside Sainsburys. It feels productive to provide a service even if it isn't our usual one. Also, It's been amazing getting to know so many people who live nearby.
How can people engage with what you are doing now and in the future?
They can follow us on Instagram, tell everybody they know, or just drop us an email! In the future, they can choose us. Never has your spending power been more valuable to small businesses. Without the help of the community around us, who choose to buy their Oatly from Greyhound on the Green, rather than online or in supermarkets, we would go under. Every single penny counts right now and it's a beautiful thing to see those who can, choosing to support independents.
Thank you to Becks and Ross who have been so kind and creative with their time and efforts. In adversity, they have seen a way to maintain their business but also help a new group of people around them. Do make sure to order from Greyhound on the Green should you be local and make sure to visit them when this is over.
Do you know of a local business that is helping your community? Why not email [email protected] with details so they can be celebrated.

A Snob’s Guide to Finding Good Drinks in Disney World
Anyone who ever aspired to drink with intergalactic droids will soon be in luck: Disney Parks is set to debut a new bar, Oga’s Cantina, a “hotly anticipated” Star Wars attraction, in Florida’s Disney World and California’s Disneyland later this year.
Oga’s Cantina marks the first Disneyland bar serving alcohol to the general public (provided they are over 21, of course). Disney World, on the other hand, actually has a number of places to have a pint, cocktail, or glass of vino.
This may come as a surprise to those who envision both Walt Disney and his eponymous theme parks as wholesomely teetotaling affairs. But Walt was not a prohibitionist. Despite what countless people on the internet claim, Walt Disney was a man who boozed it up quite a bit—usually starting with a Scotch cocktail at 5 o’clock sharp. He simply wanted his theme parks and public persona to be a little more, ahem, dry than he actually was.
“Walt Disney doesn’t drink,” he once told a friend. “I drink.”
Well, we drink, too.
Luckily, it’s become easier and easier over the years to drink pretty well in Disney World — if you know where to look. The entire property is a massive 40 square miles divided into four unique theme parks (plus resort accommodations). Consider this your guide to finding the top beer, wine, booze, and cocktails throughout Disney World.
Cinderella’s Royal Table at the Magic Kingdom serves top-shelf Champagne. Credit: Disneyworld.disney.go.com
Magic Kingdom Park
The main theme park was dry until Be Our Guest, a Beauty & the Beast-themed restaurant, opened in 2012. In 2015 four more restaurants with alcohol opened. Today it’s up to eight, meaning every single sit-down restaurant in the park serves booze. All require advanced reservations, so plan your dipsomania accordingly. We have loosely ranked them in order of quality:
Cinderella’s Royal Table
Your children can dine with princesses while you get blotto on $320 bottles of Dom. Bottle service has never felt so… baller.
Be Our Guest Restaurant
Look for an adequate selection of wine and Champagne like Veuve Clicquot at this faux-opulent spot. Beers lean toward Belgian classics, like Saison Dupont and Chimay Blue. (There is also an app, Beers and Ears, that helps you locate specific ales and lagers in the park.)
Jungle Navigation Co. Ltd. Skipper Canteen
This fairly problematic “jungle-themed” restaurant serves a mishmash of Asian, South American, and African beverages. You’ll find everything from Kenyan lagers to Argentinian Malbec to Sangria to, uh, Michelob Ultra.
The Diamond Horseshoe
There’s a small selection of beer and wine at this rootin’ tootin’ Old West hall, but it does have the solid Cigar City Jai Alai IPA, which hails from nearby Tampa, Fla.
The Crystal Palace
Blue Moon, J.Lohr Cabernet Sauvignon, some solid Columbia Valley sparkling wine, and Cigar City Jai Alai IPA are available at this The Winnie the Pooh-themed restaurant. There’s also costumed characters roaming about. (Come on, Eeyore, my drinking buddies back home are depressing enough!)
Liberty Tree Tavern
The selections at this early-America-inspired inn are classic if a bit uninspired, and include Mimosas and Napa Valley Cab, just like ol’ George Washington used to drink.
Tony’s Town Square Restaurant
There are no red-checkered tablecloths at this spot modeled after the place where Lady and the Tramp had their first kiss, but there is a sizable selection of “vino” and “birra.” Both lists only play the hits, pouring Peroni and Stella Artois plus Banfi Chianti. Surprisingly, the restaurant is not dog-friendly.
The Plaza Restaurant
This heavily-mirrored restaurant has some of the most bland booze options in the entire park. Think Bellinis and Mich Ultra.
Skip the sugary cocktails and sip sparkling wines at Epcot’s China pavilion. Credit: Disneyworld.disney.go.com.
Epcot
There are 11 pavilions styled after different countries at this “Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow.” All offer alcoholic beverages with varying degrees of authenticity, cultural sensitivity, and drinkability. Here are the most interesting options in each “country.”
United States of America
Look for craft beers like Founders Rubaeus at the Block & Hans kiosk.
Japan
There’s sake, obvi, plus frozen Ichiban beer, available at the Kabuki Cafe.
Morocco
Although the actual Morocco is home to winelands that some American somms feel have international potential, Epcot’s Morocco focuses on cocktails like The Casablanca Sunset (a gross combination of apricot brandy and peach schnapps) and the frozen Sultan’s Colada.
France
Les Vins des Chefs de France, a counter-service wine bar, has a decent selection of wines by the glass, including Jean-Luc Colombo Cotes du Rhone and Nicolas Feuillate Champagne. If that sounds too rich for your blood, there’s also a silly frozen drink, the Grand Marnier-based Orange Slush.
United Kingdom
The pub Rose & Crown serves pints of Boddingtons and Guinness, flights of single malts, and one extremely curious cocktail. The Leaping Leprechaun features Jameson (sure), rum (OK), vodka (wha?), as well as melon liqueur, sour mix, and Sprite.
Canada
Our neighbors to the north might actually offer Epcot’s best beers at Le Cellier, which serves a full menu of boozy Unibroue options. There’s also Molsons, Labatts, and one of the world’s premier drunk foods, poutine!
Tony’s Town Square is modeled after the fictional restaurant where Lady and the Tramp had their first kiss. Surprisingly, it is not dog-friendly. Credit: Disneyworld.disney.go.com.
Mexico
Bypass the sugar-bomb Margs at stands throughout the pavillion, and head to La Cava de Tequila. It offers a quality selection of sipping tequilas and legitimately interesting Margaritas, included a frozen avocado one.
Norway
Kringla Bakeri Og Kafe’s shot of Linie Aquavit is surely one of the most esoteric and, quite frankly, quality offerings in the entire Epcot complex.
China
Nine Dragons restaurant serves Chinese-American fare like General Tso’s Chicken with an array of aggressively sweet cocktails like frozen mango Daiquiris and the South Sea Breeze, a blend of pineapple and orange juices spiked with coconut rum and grenadine. However, there’s also a lengthy wine list with some surprisingly solid options, like Mumm Brut Prestige sparkling wine and Valkenberg Gewurtzraminer.
Germany
Expect to see knuckleheads aplenty hoisting steins of, unfortunately, humdrum Deutschland beer like Beck’s. Where’s the Weihenstephaner?! Your better bet is to opt for a spate of adequate, easy-drinking Riesling, like Valckenberg Madonna. Or maybe just get $9 shots of Jager.
Italy
A surprisingly cozy place to drink, The Tutto Gusto Wine Cellar touts over 200 bottles of wine—and some aren’t bad! Look for Greco di Tufo Mastroberardino, Vermentino Guado al Tasso and Fiano Avellino Mastroberardino.
Animal Kingdom Park
The drinking options at this zoologically themed park skirt a fine line between esoteric and nonsensical. Beers and wines are mostly sourced directly from across Africa —Bellingham Chenin Blanc from South Africa, for instance—but the cocktails lean that direction in name only. Additionally, far too many primate puns abound.
The Rainforest Cafe
Part of the same 1990s tide that brought Planet Hollywoods to tourist destinations worldwide, this theme restaurant is located near the entrance to Animal Kingdom. The beer and wine is fairly pedestrian, featuring Bud Light and Rodney Strong Chardonnay but the sugary and “tropical” cocktails, like the Mongoose Mai Tai, come in souvenir glasses worth take a walk with.
Jiko – The Cooking Place
This upscale restaurant offers over one-hundred South African wines, with solid staples from Raats and DeMorgenzon and higher-end bottlings from Philip Jonker and Sadie Family. On Wednesdays there are $30 tasting flights, which sounds more fun than riding the Teacups.
Dawa Bar
One of Disney World’s more intriguing international beer selections is at this so-called “bamboo bar” in Harambe village. Most of the beers, such as Tusker Lager, are industrial beers not as available in the U.S., and thus more interesting than a Bud Light in name only. Opt for a Hakim Stout from Ethiopia, or Dawa’s takes on classic cocktails, like a Margarita made with Van der Hum, South Africa’s tangerine-flavored liqueur.
Nomad Lounge
Numerous craft cocktails are available at this lounge on Discovery Island and, though many have African-inspired names, few use any sort of ingredients sourced on the continent.

Hollywood Studios
When was the last time you saw Buzz Lightyear getting buzzed? Probably the last time you came here. Disney World’s least-visited theme park doesn’t have many drinking destinations, but there are a few solid options.
Tune-In Lounge
The lobby to the Prime Time Café acts as a retro ’50s bar showing TV from the era and, thankfully, offering drinks from this era. Craft beers include mainstream bottles like New Belgium Fat Tire, wile cocktails are kicked up a notch for the distressed parent, like in the Ultimate Long Island Iced Tea. Hopefully your kids knows what hotel you’re staying in.
The Hollywood Brown Derby Lounge
A wannabe facsimile of the see-and-be-seen Hollywood haunt of yore, Golden Age-era cocktails are the name of the game here—opt for a Manhattan or Martini.
Top Picks in Resort Areas Outside the Parks
Trader Sam’s Grog Grotto and Tiki Bar (Magic Kingdom Resort Area / Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort)
The best drinking destination in all of Disney World is this surprisingly legit tiki bar. Of course the traditionally kitschy, high seas aesthetic is a perfect fit for the pirate-friendly theme park—but the drinks, in highly-collectable mugs, will please tikiphiles too.
Located outside the park and opened in 2015 after the immense success of a Disneyland version, it becomes adult-only after 8PM, though the wait to get in often stretches into hours. Drinks like the Polynesian Pearl and the Tahitian Torch are well-made if a tad sweet; there’s also tiki-ish “no-booze brews” for the kiddos. Drinks are prepared by actors, not bartenders (no jokes here), and animatronic effects (such as an exploding volcano) are triggered when certain drinks are ordered. That’s admittedly a little Chuck E. Cheese-esque, but, you know, you’re drinking in a theme park bar that’s technically classified as a “ride,” not Smuggler’s Cove.
Jock Lindsey’s Hangar Bar (Disney Springs)
This 1940s dive bar claims to be where Indiana Jones’ sidekick used to hang his pilot’s hat. Turns out he was drinking pretty well then! There’s a decent single malt selection and massive cocktail list, including long drinks like Singapore Slings and Mojitos.
Raglan Road Irish Pub (Disney Springs)
This Emerald Isle pub is pretty plain Jane. Guinness abounds in this Emerald Isle-inspired pub, with a few other Irish and American draughts. There is, of course, Bailey’s and Jameson in many of the mixed drinks.
AbracadaBar (Disney World’s Boardwalk)
This so-called “speakeasy” (with a gigantic marquee loudly announcing its location) is meant to resemble a 1940’s magicians’ hangout. Alrighty. More like an airport Ruby Tuesday, the bar offers $12.50 “handcrafted” cocktails, which are more of a rarity in this area of the park than you’d think. Many of the drinks are vodka and Bacardi heavy, and though the ice is not the kind of crystal clear stuff a pretentious cocktailian expects, you will find some pretty solid offerings. Try the Coney Negroni, which is made with Eagle Rare Bourbon instead of gin, and resembles a Boulevardier. The Collins Double is a Tom Collins variant actually made with freshly-squeezed juices.
A totally solid tiki bar lies in the resort area beyond the parks. Credit: Disneyworld.disney.go.com.
Jellyrolls (Disney World’s Boardwalk)
This 21-and-over dueling piano bar is perhaps the most fun bar in the entire park. The alcohol selection is purely straightforward, though good for aiding your heartfelt rendition of “A Whole New World.”
Ample Hills Creamery (Disney World’s Boardwalk)
One of the park’s best boozing secrets is this Brooklyn-based ice cream shop with an outpost in Orlando. While the kiddos grab a cone, adults can snag a alcoholic floats made with Coney Island Hard Root Beer.
Club 33 (Four locations in Disney World Resort)
If you have a spare $25,000, you can become a member of these newly opened, invite-only private clubs. There’s one in each of the four parks. With yearly dues of $15,000, they’ll surely have something better than light beer.

Perfectly Positioned For a Trip to Jalgaon
This hotel is conveniently located for walking to many of the tourist sites of Berlin and is just off the Potsdamer Platz from where every mode of transport around the city or to the rest of Germany is available. The suites we had was on the 10th floor and had a view over the city and plenty of space. The bed was large and separate seating and a desk were provide. There was a large wardrobe with plenty of hanging space and shelves. The bathroom was spacious, a shower provided over a large bath was powerful and there was plenty of space around the sink area for toiletries. A kitchen area was provided with a small two ring hob and a fridge and sink. Basic crockery and cutlery was provided and pots, etc are available on request. The hotel has a nice bar and we ate in the Facil restaurant on one evening which was excellent, see separate review.Amazing Stay
There are so many good things about this hotel it is hard to list them all. The location is great, you are surrounded by shops, restaurants and attractions. The staff are lovely, they are so helpful on reception and the staff at breakfast were fantastic. The room we had, was amazing, they had thought of everything, iPod, docking station, small kitchen area, lots of hanging/storage space. i already want to return to Berlin as there is so much to see and I will definitely be staying at the Mandala again. A huge thank you to everyone therePerfect location, nice hotel
We had a 60sqm suite at the 8th floor. Fantastic view to the Sony Center and a small balcony. Beside this there is not much to say. We haven't seen many staff members, the front desk and the concierge seemed a little bit confused from time to time, but I guess sh**t happens, also in 5-star-hotels. However, we liked it.
Car parking is accessible via Ludwig-Beck-Strasse. (the signage is pretty poor...)
The Alte Potsdamer Strasse is right behind the Hotel, nice restaurants and bars.
The park Am Gleisdreieck is not far, perfect for the kids and a nice beer garden from a craft brewery. Tiergarten park is also very close, Brandenburger Tor is just a few minutes walk. - We loved the location.
Just a small thing: We found the blankets were more suitable during the winter. To warm for July..
-------------------
Stayed at this beautiful hotel for 3 nights following a recommendation from a friend! We weren't disappointed! Easy check in friendly staff beautiful design! Upgraded to an executive suite which was fabulous plenty of space felt more like an apartment!! Central location directly opposite the Sony Center! We weren't disappointed! Easy check in friendly staff beautiful design! Upgraded to an executive suite which was fabulous plenty of space felt more like an apartment! c Central location directly opposite the Sony Center! Easy walking distance to all the major attractions although the transport links are very good! I'd recommend walking if able to get a real feeling for the city! Shopping complexes nearby looked amazing although we didn't have time to experience any of them! Have read numerous uncomplimentary reviews, however, we wouldn't hesitate to stay again! We stayed for five nights over the August Bank Holiday.
The hotel is in a perfect location, just off Alexanderplatz. It's easy to get to by any of the methods of transport, and we travelled in via the S Bahn from the airport.
We had a Blue Man Room (Deluxe) facing the TV Tower. The room was very big and the shower room was huge!
We will be booking to return to this hotel. Thank you for a fantastic break.A good value in a great location
The room was nice if somewhat small. It was a nice, quiet part of the hotel and, apart from some noise from the courtyard, we slept well and comfortably. We were there to visit my daughter, who lives right on Alexanderplatz. We were 5 minutes away, and had excellent access to public transport.. It was a nice buffet with American and English style choices, but at 17 euros each, it was not a great deal. There are lots of nice restaurants a short walk away.Excellent hotel
The hotel is located close to Berlin HBF, u-bahn and tram stations The buffet breakfast was too pricey however we opted not to take it as there were some nice bakeries and cafes a few minutes away. If I am in Berlin again (which I will undoubtedly be), I will be staying here!
My elderly mother and I stayed here in September, 2017. The hotel is centrally located and easily accessible from the nearby Potsdamer Platz train station. There are wonderful restaurants and shops all around, and the Opera house is within walking distance. All of the hotel staff were friendly and very helpful, fluent in German and English. My mother really wanted to attend an organ concert in Berlin and we asked the staff if they could help us find some options -- by the time we returned from dinner, they had compiled a list of possibilities, complete with addresses, times, and the best way to get there. Very impressive! Our room was enormous! Very comfortable and luxurious. My mother did find it challenging to use the shower because it was quite high and had no grab bars. We weren't able to dine in the Michelin star restaurant (next time!), but the bar restaurant Qui, was delightful, reasonably priced, with good service. Nice selection of wines. I will definitely return to the Mandala!
