Amalgamated by Becca Seymour
Tumblr media
Series: Coming Home #2 Read time: 1 Day Rating: 2/5 Stars
The Quote: Truth be told, I didn’t give a shit about the lost time, the hurt. To amalgamate and have the time to figure out us as a couple was worth the growing up I’d needed to do. — Leo
Warnings: Nothing triggering. But my review does explain two potential issues for some readers.
I like Leo and Zak's story it has some similarities to the other book in the Coming Home series (duology?) in that there is self-sacrifice and miscommunication in play. It has a simple, easy-to-read and low angst plot. It is about Leo understanding the words of others, the actions of Zak and their coming to terms with their mutual long-held attraction. I love that Leo was a dumb twenty-something who did a stupid thing. Zak is a complicated man. Some people will like him some will not it is dependent on how you view his actions. He broke Leo in a way but knew he was watching and played up to it. He did not groom or act on his attraction to underage Leo. I have a spoiler discussion here in my original review that looks at a specific quote.
Leo and Zak's age gap is something to get over when you realise the ages in play. It is an eight-year age gap, with the book set when Leo is 27. This is his first time home in five years. Leo admitted his own feelings for Zak when he was fifteen and tried to make a play for him at maybe twenty-two (if not earlier). I don't hate it but I don't love it either it just feels like it's tiptoeing an uncomfortably fine line. I like that Leo's family is supportive of the relationship and wants it to happen, has always known and wanted it to happen. It may go some way to making their relationship more acceptable by on-the-fence readers.
Some quotes and comments.
I struck hard and fast as I dug my fingers in and made her squeal like a girl, which I promptly told her. “Get off. And girls are kick-arse, so I can squeal all I damn well want.” — I really with we saw more of Jenny. She's a total badass, she is Leo's older sister and the Mayor's wife. (Leo and Jenny)
There is such a pure Australianness to the description of the town. No one said excitement couldn’t be trumped by fear. And between the two emotions, I was still struggling to figure out exactly how to approach the man who’d stolen my heart so many years ago. — Their first time seeing each other after so long is perfect. But life this line there is a simple anxiety to it. (Leo)
Awkwardness had charged into the room and ran around laughing its arse off at me. — This is a total mood and I can't not include it. (Leo)
Michelle is lovely. She is Leo's stepmother but more or less the only mother he's only ever known.
Breathing hard out of my nose, I took control of my emotions. I didn’t even have to ask why he’d done it. He was Zak. It’s what Zak always did. He always took care of me. Always. The knowledge had my heart punching against my ribcage. — This says as much about Zak as anything else we see. Leo and Zak are both caregivers with actions meaning more than words to both of them. (Leo)
I'm not mad about this book's ending but I'm disappointed in it. Let me say the difference between the two Coming Home books Realigned and Amalgamated is in the ending. Realigned's protagonists Shaun and Mitch never get to full sexy times Leo and Zak do. Shaun and Mitch we leave them right before they begin, Leo and Zak in their afterglow. That is where it falls over if I'm honest. I don't think either of them needed it, I like the focus on the emotional and the choice that Shaun and Leo respectively need to make. It's implied heavily that both couples were going there and showing it means the story loses something for me.
As an explanation for the low rating, 2⭐ part of it is tied to the ending. I'm hiding that part of it under a spoiler on Goodreads but it's not all that major really and largely a personal preference. The other problem is the lack of character development. I know this is a novella so necessarily short. But it needed to be longer or skip the sex for the sake of just a little more character development. Leo's British life is ignored more or less. We don't know what he does it is a problem. I can see where the potential was in this but it just feels poorly executed.
I want to add a picture for those like me who like beautiful machinery. Leo destroyed Zak's pride and joy on his way out of the country... "Once my eyes adjusted, they jumped wide open as they landed on the machine off to the right. Still sleek, black, and sexy as hell stood his 1965 Royal Enfield. The biggest relief that sent shame thrumming through me was that it was intact. “How did you…?”" This is my best guess at the bike that Zak owns. She really is a beautiful thing. Leo as much as I adore you, your 22-year-old ass was a freaking moron.

Ultimate Playlist: Women’s Names, B-C
Barbara Ann by The Beach Boys While I grew up listening to The Beach Boys singing this song, it was originally written by Fred Fassert and first recorded by the Regents in 1961. That’s the version that was featured in George Lucas’s film American Graffiti.
Bette Davis Eyes by Kim Carnes Winning Song of the Year at the 1981 Grammy Awards, this song prompted actress Bette Davis to thank the singer and songwriters for giving her grandson a reason to look up to her. She was 73.
betty by Taylor Swift I’m not a Swifty, but my daughter introduced me to some of her songs. This one is narrated from the perspective of a fictitious character named James who is apologizing to Betty for cheating on her.
Betty Don't Use That Gun by Eddie From Ohio Betty doesn’t take the songwriter’s advice in this tragic song about a suicide.
Billie Jean by Michael Jackson According to Michael, this song was inspired by groupies that would hang around backstage doors and try to make it with any band that came to town, including his brothers when they toured as the Jackson 5.
Brandy by Looking Glass Brandy is a barmaid in a busy seaport harbor town pining for the sailor who left her for the sea. Released in 1972, the song was so popular, it raised Brandy from the 353rd most popular girl’s name in 1971 to 82nd in 1973.
The Three Fine Daughters of Farmer Brown by Eddie From Ohio You may not have heard of the band Eddie From Ohio. Despite their name, they’re a contemporary folk band from Virginia. This song is a fan favorite, which tells the tragic tale of three sisters—Nellie, Dottie, and Becca—who accidentally drown in a boating accident. I decided to order this one by their last name.
Caroline by Fleetwood Mac This wasn’t one of the hits off of their 1987 album Tango in the Night, but it’s still a good song.
Caroline I See You by James Taylor Off his 2002 album October Road, Taylor’s smooth voice delivers a folk-flavored love song.
Sweet Caroline by Neil Diamond A perfect sing-along.
Ex-Wives by the cast of SIX This is the opening song of the broadway musical SIX about the six wives of Henry VIII: Catherine of Aragon, Anne Boleyn, Jane Seymour, Anna of Cleves, Katherine Howard, and Catherine Parr. I figured I’d throw this in the C’s given that the first and last are both Catherines.
Cecilia by Simon & Garfunkel This racy love song got its start at a late-night party when they recorded themselves pounding on a piano bench.
Christie Lee by Billy Joel Let me tell you a story about a woman and a man. Billy said, “There’s a lot of clever stuff in there.  Yeah, I’m pretty proud of that one.”
Cleo and Tony by Eddie From Ohio A song inspired by the affair between Cleopatra and Mark Antony that ended in them both committing suicide after Octavian invaded Egypt.

Realigned by Becca Seymour
Tumblr media
Series: Coming Home #1 Read time: 1 Day Rating: 4/5 Stars
The Quote: Heat spread over every inch of my skin. Wicked tongue. My brain had short-circuited at some point in the last thirty minutes or so. I didn’t know if it had started when he admitted his feelings for me or at the mention of seduction. I knew one thing for sure, though: my addled brain could not shake the thought of his tongue. — Shaun O'Ryan
Warnings: None. Just a rock-loving scientist and his selfless idiot.
Realigned is Shaun's story. Shaun O'Ryan is an Australian country boy, a geologist employed by NASA. He's been living in America for 8 years not coming home in all that time, talking to his family by phone and occasional visits by them. Now he's in Australia for a two-week stay. The first event in the book is Shaun getting pulled over for speeding... a joke by his lifelong friend Sergeant Mitch Harris. It is kinda funny and is a perfect example of their relationship dynamic.
The novellas epigraph is Take risks.. This sets the tone for the whole story. Shaun is being headhunted by a big company, his family (especially his mum) wants him to stay in Australia for good, taking the offer and coming home. They decide to use Mitch as a weapon knowing full well that Shaun and Mitch have had a thing for each other for a decade. Honestly, it's simple enough. It is Shaun saying I can't have sex involved if I'm going to make a logical decision here. It's a premise a liked and I appreciated that Becca choose to use a single narrator to tell her story. Sometimes having both spoils the surprise for some events.
Have some of the long quotes I liked.
Since it was midweek, there were only a handful of patrons propping up the bar. I greeted every one of them with a handshake when they declared the astronaut had returned. I simply smiled and indicated to Mitch to hurry the hell up with our drinks. There was no point even attempting to explain I wasn’t an astronaut. Yeah, I was lucky enough to work for NASA, but I was all about geology and research. It didn’t matter in a small town like this though. Six hours from civilisation in the arse of the outback, most of the residents heard NASA and decided for themselves I would be travelling the solar system at some point in the future. Who was I to spoil their fun? — I have nothing to add to this really. It just feels like he is the ultimate hometown boy made good. This quote almost said more about him than anything else we got early on. (Shaun)
Apparently everyone knew whatever it was Mum was failing to act coy about. Even my brothers-in-law looked prepped for a reveal. I took a few moments to try to figure out what was going on before returning my attention to Mum. This time her expression was more relaxed, just too much so considering everyone else’s reaction. — Oh the pure joy of this level of this family dynamic. I love it so much. Meddling mothers are the best. (Shaun)
“Not quite sure yet.” I indicated Mitch with a chin lift. “That’s a question for Sarge.” I looked over at him and threw him a wink. “God help us all.” Lorna chuckled, and I glanced back to see her watching the two of us, an amused smile on her lips and a gentleness in her eyes. “You boys back together again.” She shook her head. “Not sure if it’s a good or bad thing Mitch here is now the sarge. Does that mean you’ll get away with even more, rather than not getting up to any crazy stunts?” With her brows raised high, she studied Mitch then clucked. I had no idea what she’d read on his face, but by the time I looked at him, his face was a picture of innocence. I rolled my eyes, not at all convinced. — There are several reasons I like small-town romance, particularly back home after a long-time romance, moments like this are one of them. The people who knew them as kids, the trouble making them, get the whole oh help us all vibe. It's fun and funny. (Shaun and Lorna)
"I’m happy with weird if it means you keep looking at me the way you do.” “What way is that?” I squeaked. “Like you want me to be yours and you don’t want me to ever let you go.” I was done. It was time to stick a damn fork in me. — I just love that last line. I know this is a fairly common quote but somehow it feels like home to me. I can't explain it. I also like the set-up here. (Mitch and Shaun)
I like Becca Seymour for her Australian romance. They have some angst, a whole lot of sweetness and Australian linguistics. Realigned is no exception to this. Better yet it is free on both amazon and Prolific Works (likely other platforms as well), giving this broad access option if a reader wants to try her writing for the first time. I'm giving this 4 rather than 3⭐ because it is free, yes it is short. But it is a HFN, not a HEA and I'm more than okay with that. This does have a follow-up Amalgamated, I will be reading that as well I think. It follows the same sort of ideas.

Review: Realigned by Becca Seymour
Review: Realigned by Becca Seymour-- When Shaun returns home to the Australian outback, he must decide what to do when his vacation ends, either go back to his life in the United States or stay and start a relationship with his best friend.
While the title of this blog is Hella Gay YA, I’ve never been good at staying on topic. And as an author of gay romances, I figure the important part is ‘gay’ anyway. So I’m going to share my thoughts on the novella Realigned by Becca Seymour. The cover needs a special shout-out. GORGEOUS, GORGEOUS, GORGEOUS COVER. Yes, I needed to say it three times because it can’t be said enough. BEAUTIFUL,…

That’s until an epic stumble makes his head spin and he throws all caution to the wind. But there’s no turning back now, especially since a snow-filled trip means they’re forced to spend even more time together.
Mark has no concerns about the changes unfolding between him and Trey, the giant of a man who’s adorably reserved. He’s been crushing on him for so long that he’s eager to explore more. But when their latest adventure is over and they fall back into the real world, balancing work, life, and a relationship proves more challenging than he envisioned.
Something has got to give, and neither man knows the best way ahead without upsetting the status quo. Can the two Aussies work their way through their new connection, or will they stumble at the first hurdle in their way?
