Tel Aviv 2019: Straight outta Latvia to Eurovision with a cinematic French rendez-vous
youtube
Supernova with their strict-on decision to only focus on all that’s radiofriendly this year went to hell for me. I mean, I like me some pop tunes, but not those that are purposefully marketed to be enjoyed by the massive sheeps of the Eurofandom who usually fall for those songs by Michael James Down, Will Taylor, even Ylva & Linda... because at the end of the day they’re all just shallow and pointless outside the ESC bubble.
Well the best they could do is to accept some different winds out of nowhere! And so they did when the audition stage hit place and we guys got to witness the 33 shortlisted tunes for this year, among which of them are loudly and proudly different - like “Alligator” and “Grow”, which I did not fathom but I was also raging for their not qualification for - more precisely “Alligator” which was way more outstanding of those two I mentioned. The guys that performed that song were fun, their performance choice was fun, they could have totally rocked on Supernova... but alas.
In fact not that many alternative songs made it to the final down-to-16 cut! There might have been a couple of those that sound nothing a radio would play unless it’s not playing pop on its purpose (Laime Pilnīga’s ”Awe” comes to mind right away), but in the end of the day, not many of those survived and we were graced with some... choices, like letting Samanta Tina waste herself on a cocky-ass tune with terrible chorus rhyme-scheme and unbearable charisma and putting through the most Eirodziesma-like mess-fest with the Beaver guy on top of it. Honey I like you in costume but... not in this emploi.
I don’t blame them though, as one of non-blatant-pop tunes conquered the Latvian hearts for this year. These next Latvian people in Laura Rizzotto’s succession are collectively named Carousel and their song is “That Night”.
It sets a romantic mood throughout, like we all are reliving this magical last date - it was in a restaurant, the candles were lit, the restaurant looked vintage with bordeaux satin tablecloth on the table, and the couple is having a smooth evening... until the love runs out to the probably cold and rainy streets and the other half of the couple starts longing for one's love. That's all I can imagine with this.
So yeah, I really like this! It's got lovely instrumentation that doesn't need all the over the top instruments - just guitar, simple drums, etc.; the noir flair is distinct on here and that's not bad on here; this is just a simple and soft song that you too could play in your own restaurants when all the lovely couples have romantic dinners and sip wine. And in some kind of a French movie, too (with the lead role being a curly redhead artiste with striped sweater, looking for love in Paris (because it’s so romantic in there honhonhon). I'm not sure if the revamp touched upon this one little problem I noticed but the problem kinda seems to be that the chorus repeats. A lot. And verses are way too short that they could be easily forgotten against the 4th and 5th time one would be hearing the "lo-o-o-o-ove, where? Are? You?" line, and then lulled into sleep at how peacefully relaxing it is. Which is indeed of a problem because repetition has quite a bit of a negative effect on people. Yes, it gets the song onto your brain more easily, but the repetition drives people insane too. Just like it was suspected for “Story of My Life” (Belarus 2017) on its original version to be unable to be ‘stood’ - after the 2nd chorus, the rest of the song just went like “hey hey hayayayaho” until the end. Naviband fixed the problem by throwing in another vocal onomatopoeia in a form of the song bridge and I loved them for it, even if there still were too many “hey hey hey”s at the end, haha.
Final conclusion? Yep, issa good entry, and if anything it’s helluva underrated. Say what you want about it being “boring”, to me it’s somewhat fresh and exciting, because the melodies are pleasant, the instrumentation is top notch and Sabīne’s vocals are relaxing. Delightful starry night music, oh yes, thanks a lot for it, Carousel, I’m taking it.
Obviously, after they won Supernova, there was a lowkey uprising from fans who were dead certain on wanting Edgars Kreilis or Markus Riva to win, eek. Honeys, honeys. I do like those two as well, BUT for a bit of a mess that Supernova 2019 was with some of their decisions to include, I think it’s for the better they finally let themselves go lighthearted over it all rather than blatant tryhard to sound radio for the masses just cuz the NF wanted. Just forgive Carousel for winning, okay? Okay. ^_^
Approval factor: Definite yes from me, because why wouldn’t I rate it a yes. Yay brotherland!
Follow-up factor: For me personally this is miles better than Laura Rizzotto's last year's melodrama. Overall I think it just flows nice and is a delightful addition to the Latvian collection.
Qualification factor: This I cannot think about all too often but I am not sure if they'd... stand a chance anymore? I'd use to think it did, but that was weeks before supposedly much stronger entries rushed in, squeezing Latvia into an uncomfortable position. But I really hope it's just charming enough to kind of get through. Sort of. A little bit. I'm positive about it happening, but not that much. And a lot of older audiences might love it enough to vote it, too.
NATIONAL FINAL BONUS
I admit that I got way too heated about hearing Supernova’s new approach to selecting entries, but in the end it turned out that I didn’t need to worry all that much in the first place - some of those alternative entries we got were very nice (or at least the entries out of the standart overbearing radio-pop norm), both in their actual auditions (this time they were on an actual stage in front of a jury instead of the listeners pick-pocketing the submissions themselves) AND among the actual picks. But what else is there to be note-worthy in this year’s edition of this show?
• Well, among of the auditionees there were those too-weird-ass bands/artists (some of them I mentioned), and you saw me mention the “Alligator” song to you beforehand, which is done by an ambitious project ATOM.LV (so did I mention “Grow" by Waterflower and her show is worth mentioning as well <3 Those flowers in her hair, the hair color, the makeup, her overall image (it’s like Jamie-Lee upgraded) and the dance moves are ADORABLE <3333 but the song is... hmm... :c). And I’ll repeat myself - those guys rocked! I may have not been a massive fan of this but I can at least commend them - they had a good song structure going on, a clear message (alligators from the stars *catchy trumpet fanfare part* trying to probably conquer the world, yeah!) and an outrageous tribal image with that facepaint on! Awh hell yeah! Who wouldn't want THAT through the live shows??? Ah, only the Latvian juries ofc. (And me because I never got the appeal of this but I sure felt sad for 'em kids hoping and wishing for them through :x)
youtube
• Thank Goodness I had my faves through - all hail Double Faced Eels! They're the little legendary pop band who went all their way to compete in some Youtube contest and have had sung with Bebe Rexha as the prize for winning it almost 1,5 years ago :o Believe it or not but I have heard of them way before their Sulernova stint - I got introduced to them through a friend, known on Tumblr as Soupgeist. :3 And I don't regret stanning a name I know, as "Fire", their entry in this year's 'Nova, was a pop-rock banger with some electro in! Granted the vocaliat might've had some troubles singing live but he still pulled it off nicely in the finals, with that energy coming out on top! Yeah yeah, uguns. 🔥
youtube
• Like I mentioned earlier, there were people rooting for other favourites this year so heavily, and that annoyed the hell out of me, because I thought that Eurofans have some sort of evolving tastes that accept more than just pretty pop boys/girls with not-so-special songs? Well, I mentioned that Eurofans’ targets were Edgars Kreilis and Markus Riva. The latter felt so attacked about him trying to achieve his representation dream over and over he even tweeted about it once... well I did like his song “You Make Me So Crazy”, but I found it a little too overrated with the fans. So I did Edgars, but his song was way catchier and had way more personality than being a club track, I tell ya. Why would his song be renamed from “Fire” (yes, he partially shared a song title with that Double Faced Eels’s song!) to “Cherry Absinthe”, anyway? It gives it a bit more of an exciting feeling, tbh. ^_^ So I ended up rooting for him a little bit more out of the two ‘pretty’ pop boys, if I had to accept one of those kind of winners that everyone wanted (like everyone wanted just either yesyes or The Middletonz for Hungary this year).
youtube
• There were a lot of other nice chosen songs too that I would’ve loved to discuss, but I just can’t not mention the Riga’s Beaver as one of the more memorable moments here. I did write earlier in this that I was disappointed though. Not because of the beaver being out of costume and coming at us as a young-to-middle-aged stunning lad, but because the Beaver-entry, “Tautasdziesma”, was a “Supernova”-times cluster-mess. I think of this as a charity music medley-parody of some sorts, and that doesn’t bode with me well, and sometimes I like parodies, like the one Klemen Slakonja (aka the guy who portrayed Putin for a musical number once) did in his country’s NF in 2012 (that he hosted) was fairly nice (although a bit too much), but... ehhh... at least the men are fine and their costumes were dandy.
youtube
• Let’s not forget that those auditions had this one glorious thing going on during the performances - we saw shots of the jurors judging all of the 33 shortlisted acts with... rather less-than-enthusiastic looks, and man oh man were they fabulously done with this shit <3333
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
if that’s not a big indicator of them being too dead inside to be judging anything that day, then idk what is...
Anyway, I am finished with this review also, and I’m happy about it! I don’t think I can move any of this at a more quicker pace (seriously, I have to do so many more even during rehearsals!!!), but I am still trying to do my best. Good luck to the Carousel quartet and may they not flop in May! To hell with the naysayers sweeties, you’ll do just fine x ✨

In 2017, Vertesi and Vancouver Mural Festival were selected for Vancouver Magazine’s Power 50 Award.
Q&A
How do you define creativity and apply it in your life and career? To me, creativity is about thinking in possibilities. My life and career up til now have been about collaboratively manifesting big ideas and I like to think it happens by mixing creativity with a high tolerance of uncertainty and a healthy dose of pragmatism.
Where do you find your best creative inspiration or energy? In general, working collaboratively around a shared vision. In music, by myself late at night. With murals, when I see blank walls, which is basically all the time, haha.
What’s one piece of creative advice or a tip you wish you’d known as a young person? Creativity can be innate, but it’s most powerful when also treated as a skill to be practised and mindset to be honed.
Who (living or dead) would you most enjoy hearing speak at CreativeMornings? Beck.
What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever done? Having a kid.
What fact about you would surprise people? I’m a casual yo-yo enthusiast, I started in my 30s.
What music are you listening to these days? Sault - Untitled (Black Is)
What was the best advice you were ever given? A producer told 19-year-old me not to focus on the existing music industry, but rather stay focused on my vision, work, and scene to become part of the next version of the industry.
What books made a difference in your life and why? Hard to narrow it down, Whole Earth Discipline by Stewart Brand, Analog Days: The Invention and Impact of The Moog Synthesizer by Trevor Pinch and Frank Trocco, Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds by Charles Mackay. Actually, reading Avengers and Justice League comic books as a kid instilled a deep belief in the superpower of collaboration so maybe let’s go with that.
When you get stuck creatively, what is the first thing you do to get unstuck? Something else.
What is the one movie or book every creative must see/read? The documentary, Jodorowsky’s Dune is so inspiring when it comes to vision, impact, team-building, and sheer creativity.  So much of what we see as failure and success is simply about context and mindset.
What is the one question we haven’t asked that you want to answer? My favourite animal is the Beaver.

Olympia Zine Fest 2017 tabler spotlights! Name: Eileen Chavez From: Portland, OR Zines: Leen Zines 1-5, A Perpetual Dance, A Rotten Bundle, You Do You, Do You Really Want to Delete This File?, Party in the USA, Please Scribble in Me. Links: greenmango227.tumblr.com https://www.instagram.com/sloris227 What is your favorite zine of the moment? When Language Runs Dry Issue 5 - I picked this zine up at the Portland Zine Symposium this past July and I had a very strong emotional resonance with it. This zine series shares personal accounts of writers, poets, and comics artists navigating identity, capitalism, mental-health, care-giving, hopefulness and support in relation to dealing with chronic pain.
What do you think of when you think of Olympia? I had a friend that I went to college with named Olympia who was from Olympia. I also have a close childhood friend who moved here not too long ago and one time when I visited during the hottest part of the summer we went to a swimming spot with beavers and large fish that kept trying to munch on my legs.
What’s your favorite zine hack? I like to make a mini zine model (printing out thumbnails of my pages) in order to figure out/ mess with the layout since sometimes my zines aren’t always drawn in a linear style. It also makes the layout part feel more tactile -which helps my creative process. I also get a bonus tiny illegible zine as a memento.
What are you gonna be for Halloween? I’ve wanted to be Bjork for forever but I also have this bob wig from last year that I could potentially use to be Diane from Twin Peaks. Also potentially gumby.
What motivates you to finish a zine? Usually deadlines for festivals and events. I like to have something new at every tabling event or perform at and almost always scramble at the last second to get everything put together
What is your weather prediction for this year's fest?Hmmm, light sweater season! A bit of sun, golden foliage, some rain, aka the dreamiest weather...
What workshop are you the most stoked about? I’m really looking forward to reading with Nia King and other super inspiring artists Saturday night! Also I always love making shrinky dinks and the workshop is led by my bud Liz Yerby.

What words do I have to put in this headline to get you to read 'The Siberian Times'?
Tumblr media
Note: The Siberian Times is currently down for maintenance and is expected to be for an unspecified period of time.
There are real news sites, there are fake news sites, and then there are sites so unspeakably weird and good I could give AF about the difference.
See: The Siberian Times.
I'm confident that many of you reading this piece have never heard of the publication, and that's OK. That's what this story is here for. There's still so much time in your life to take advantage of the #1 "mass suicidal walruses" website on the internet, aka, The Siberian Times.
SEE ALSO: Trio of bears have a fun night out at Taco Bell until the cops show up
The Siberian Times started in 2012 in Novosibirsk, SIberia, according to Svetlana Skarbo, the site's editor. The English-only site hopes to challenge people's "stereotypes, many negative and out of date," about the region, Skarbo told Mashable.
To her credit, The Siberian Times did challenge my perceptions of the region, I'm just not 100 percent confident sure what they replaced them with. Every day, I head to the website to check out the hottest breaking content about bears who eat twins, vacation holidays to the Kingdom of Cold, and a trailblazing woman who won a lifetime supply of coal. These stories are allegedly real with a bit of hyperbole/Siberian fan fiction thrown in — just as it should be.
Either way, it's mesmerizing storytelling, and I sincerely encourage you to stop reading whatever snooze-fest article you're reading up about the upcoming nuclear holocaust and tune into the Siberian Times. Here's some sparkling new stereotypes I've learned so far:
It's the world's top vacation destination for bones collectors and permafrost-lovers
1. "Chateau Permafrost, wine from Siberia"
Finally, the taiga-made wine you've been waiting for.
2.

4. Kolyma: no barbed wire in sight
You'll have to pick up your barbed wire souvenirs at the airport, folks.
5. Christmas, Siberian mammoth-style
Largest Santa in the world? This one in Salekhard on the Yamal peninsula is certainly mammoth... pic.twitter.com/vIpLBfh3mE

6. Now two NEW large holes appear in Siberia
For the hole-lover in all of us.
Don't. Mess. With. Their. Armed. Cloned. Bear. Population.
1. "Two cloned dogs start work guarding prisoners at Forced Labour Camp #1 in Yakutsk"

This is a delightful little story about genetically cloned killer dogs who guard Siberias's toughest convicted rapists.
2. "Beware: Brown bear armed with two guns on the loose in Siberian region"
When you well and truly can't make it up - a hunter complaints to police about a brown bear stealing his hunting rifles https://t.co/GF6P4leQMj pic.twitter.com/DhhflCN39X

3. "Man's arm bitten off by brown bear which he fed at roadside cafe"
This poignant piece of advocacy journalism enjoins Siberian business owners to build higher fences so that drunken men can't climb over them and be eaten by bears.
4.  "Man fought off a psycho bear with his bare hands then gushing blood walked 6 km to summon aid"
"He was unarmed, and had only a penknife with him to cut the mushrooms. The bear quickly knocked away the knife and Alexander cowered under the assault from the aggressive brown bear."
5. "Woman survives after being buried alive by bear in ferocious attack"
A bear attacks a 55-year-old woman and leaves her for dead in a shallow grave, with plans to return later and eat her whole.
"Then a quick thought hit me: 'If the bear takes my legs, I'll be disabled for the rest of my life. It's better to die then to be a burden to my children."
6. "'Real Hunger Games' gears up for TV launch from bear-infested island in Siberia"

30 people armed only with knives are plunged into the heart of a Siberian winter. What could go wrong?
Siberian animals struggle with mood disorders and violence ...
1. "Village besieged by polar bears as hundreds of terrorized walruses fall 38 meters to their deaths"
A band of polar bears, clearly jacked up on seasonal Coca Cola, laid siege to a Siberian village, terrorize humans and animals alike, prompting a mass suicide in the walrus community.
2. "Beavers face deportation to Kazahkstan and Mongolia"
Facing high rents and overcrowding, refugee beavers flee to Mongolia in search of a better life.
3. "Two circus elephants saved from cold ... with buckets of vodka"
Circus elephants are forced out of their trailer and into the -41 degree cold after a fire broke out, only to be saved by vodka shots.
"We mixed 10 litres of vodka with warm water, which kept the chill at bay," a spokesman for the circus said.
4.  "Murder mystery on Stalin's 'Arctic Express' - 70 reindeer slain, but how did they die?"
It was either a simple accident, or a tragic ending for one of Siberia's largest reindeer cults.
... But are ultimately far more resilient than useless humans,
1. Brown bear ran into small town in Siberia and jumped on teenager for bear back ride
How tender: "Lucky 17-year-old boy escaped with several scratches and a bite from the piggybacking bear which was later shot dead."
2. "Children rescue flamingo that was heading for Saudi Arabia but ended up in Siberia instead"
I smell a Siberian Pixar production ...
3.  "She's the luckiest moose in Siberia after rescue from ice hole by helicopter pilot and passengers"
... Anyways, women are stronger than pretty much everybody. That definitely includes you.
1. "Woman pulls two trams full of passengers weighing 36 tons - in minus 20 cold"
youtube
3. "Governor seeks to force world's most famous hermit to abandon taiga home 100 km from civilisation"
4. "The great Siberian Coal Diet"
A woman loses a record amount of diet by eating nothing but charcoal, and is rewarded with a lifetime supply of coal. Win win.
4. "Don't mess with Siberia's strongest woman as she deals with crazy driver"
Thinking about messing with Siberia or my favorite daily, The Siberian Times? This is what will happen.
We think we've given you plenty of reading for your holiday break. But you should also make it your every day go to as well.

From The Ground Up, Su Friedrich, 2007, USA, 54’ (EN/EL) Με λίγα λόγια και καμία πολεμική, η ταινία From the Ground Up δείχνει πως ένα συνηθισμένο φλιτζάνι καφέ κατέχει κεντρική θέση στην παγκόσμια οικονομία. From The Ground Up, Su Friedrich, 2007, USA, 54’ (EN/EL) With few words and no polemics, From the Ground Up shows how an ordinary cup of coffee occupies center stage in the world economy. Traveling with the filmmaker from Guatemala to South Carolina to New York City and seeing each phase of coffee production unfold—the growing, picking, processing, distribution, brewing and selling—one comes to understand that most products we use have passed through the hands, and lives, of countless people in numerous countries. As the world’s second most traded commodity after oil, it’s all about the coffee, and about everything else we consume, consume, consume… (Image: © Su Friedrich, 2007)

Carmela’s Garden, Prokne, 2018, Greece, 5’43” (no dialogue) Η Πρόκνη κατοικεί σε ένα δωμάτιο-παλάτι οικιακότητας. Αυτό το video performance δεν έχει απαντήσεις, μόνο ερωτήσεις: τι σχέση έχει το σεξ με την αναπαραγωγή; Χωράει η απόλαυση μέσα στην οικιακότητα; Μπορεί η επανάληψη να είναι δημιουργική και ανατρεπτική;  Carmela’s Garden, Prokne, 2018, Greece, 5’43” (no dialogue) Prokne resides within a room-palace of domesticity. She takes care of her beloved objects as she sets up an identity with them. She is the queen and they are her subjects. She exists through them and vice versa. Only together they both make sense. She is wearing pearls and she becomes a pearl herself. Prokne makes sex and the sound of pleasure overwhelms the palace. The enjoyment is not visible, but there is. This video performance has no answers, just questions: how sex relates to reproduction? Does the pleasure fit into the domesticity? Can repetition be creative and subversive? (Image: © Prokne, 2018)

Faster Than Light, Thomas Anthony Owen & Kentaro Kumanomido, 2019, Greece, 70’ (EN/EL) Faster than Light tells the story of a network of LGBTQ+ people as they bridge multidimensional pathways for healing, justice and grief within a surreal fabric of relations. And now, we must be brave. Faster than Light, is a response marking the violent loss of Zak Kostopoulos (Zackie Oh) an HIV+ activist and drag performer, on the 21st of September 2018 in broad daylight in the city center of Athens. The feature length film poses the questions, ‘What is it like for a whole community to be living comfortably in fear? How can togetherness be accomplished in a society that sees difference to be something beyond their eyes?’ The visual poetry of Faster than Light includes a collage of personal interviews, video portraits, speculative fictions, social practices and dance to offer multiple platforms for the complexity of Zackie Oh’s story and her community’s relations to be expressed. Archive Of Feelings: Radical Compassion, Gizem Aksu, 2018, Turkey, 9’30’’ (no dialogue) H Archive Of Feelings: Radical Compassion, Gizem Aksu, 2018, Turkey, 9’30’’ (no dialogue) This short film is a part of “Political Imaginaries” project of the artist based on body politics and archive of feelings. When the facts about politics in your geography is too bitter to look at, it may be the time to look up. When the world reminds its hot borders, conflictual discourses and neoliberal violence, it may be the time to remember there are worlds without ends. The artist would present the worlds without ends, floating in her city, Istanbul. These worlds without ends are inspired by the archive of feelings which she has collected from daily encounters, collective meetings, cosmic observations for two years. For this time she would share radical compassion with you from her archive of feelings, which the queer environment inspired her to feel, embody and imagine. (Image: © Gizem Aksu, 2018)

These Are My Hands, Evi Tsiligaridou, 2018, UK, 8’ (EN/EL) Μια προσωπική αφήγηση ενός τρανς σώματος όπου ο πόνος, η αντίσταση, η δύναμη και η αγάπη συνυφαίνονται και γίνονται ένα. Το These Are My Hands αποτελεί ένα εικαστικό ποίημα, γεμάτο φυσικές και συναισθηματικές φαντασιώσεις, γραμμένο και αρθρωμένο από τη θεατρική συγγραφέα Jo Clifford.
These Are My Hands, Evi Tsiligaridou, 2018, UK, 8’ (EN/EL) A personal narrative of a trans body where pain, resistance, power and love become intertwined and merge into one. These Are My Hands is a visual poem which, written and voiced by playwright Jo Clifford, is full of physical and emotional imaginations. It is a deeply moving, personal account of transgender embodiment, speaking of wounds, challenges, victories and the journey towards self empowerment. (Image: © Evi Tsiligaridou, 2018)

Something Said, Jay Bernard, 2017, UK, 7’ (EN/EL) Haunted by that history, and in the context of the recent rise of the far-right and the tragedy of Grenfell, Something Said is an imaginative, gestural letter to Yvonne Ruddock, the 16 year-old whose birthday was being celebrated the night of the fire. Starting with this particular moment in time and examining its ramifications at two scales: the larger social and political rupture that followed the fire, and the smaller, individual attempt to reconcile one's queer present and the black radical past. Tumblr media
Rüya, Sinan Göknur, 2018, Turkey, 2’ (no dialogue) Everything in this animation is from the real “surreal” scapes of Istanbul that hold in tandem so much suffering and so much pleasure. It is a queer dream for a reality, the despair of which fires our life-affirming urge to transform (Image: © Sinan Göknur, 2018)

Reality Fragment 160921, Qigemu, 2017, UK/Sweden, 14’ (EN/EN,EL) Η ταινία ακολουθεί δύο άτομα στη διαδικασία της επιμέλειας της πραγματικότητάς τους, καθώς αυτά δημιουργούν τους δικούς τους χώρους εναντίον και μέσα από την κατανόηση της απόστασης. Πώς αυτοί οι πολλαπλά βιωμένοι κόσμοι, όπου ο καθένας αποτελεί μια συγχώνευση αναμνήσεων, αισθήσεων και σκέψεων, συνυπάρχουν με τις de facto παρουσιάσεις της απόστασης, της ιστορίας και της ολότητας;
Reality Fragment 160921, Qigemu, 2017, UK/Sweden, 14’ (EN/EN,EL) The film follows two people in their process of reality-curation, as they create their own spaces against and via understandings of distance. How do these multiple lived worlds, each their own amalgamation of memories, sensations, thoughts, coexist with de facto presentations of distance, history, and totality? (Image: © Qigem, 2017)

The Streets Are Ours: Two Lives Cross In Karachi, Michelle Fiordaliso, 2017, USA/ Pakistan, 17’ (EN,UR/EL,EN) Η ταινία The Streets Are Ours: Two Lives Cross in Karachi (Οι δρόμοι είναι δικοί μας: Δύο ζωές συναντώνται στο Καράτσι) είναι ένα μικρό ντοκιμαντέρ για δύο γυναίκες, τη Sabeen Mahmud και τη Fawzia Mirza.
The Streets Are Ours: Two Lives Cross In Karachi, Michelle Fiordaliso, 2017, USA/ Pakistan, 17’ (EN,UR/EL,EN) The Streets Are Ours: Two Lives Cross in Karachi is a short documentary about two women: Sabeen Mahmud and Fawzia Mirza. Mahmud and Mirza meet for the first time in Karachi, Pakistan. Mahmud, activist, self-proclaimed geek and founder of the progressive arts cafe The Second Floor (T2F), invites Mirza to screen some of her short films and perform an excerpt of her one-woman play, Me, My Mom and Sharmila at her Karachi-based cafe. The film contains the penultimate interview with Sabeen Mahmud, conducted by writer/actress Fawzia Mirza three months before Mahmud was murdered. The interview footage is woven throughout the film to provide context and allow audiences to spend as much screen time with Mahmud as possible. Mahmud’s interview footage imbues Mirza’s experiences with meaning as she comes to understand that her purpose in Pakistan is not simply to express herself, but to create spaces, just as Mahmud had, for other people to express themselves — no matter what their story. Throughout 2017, Riveriew Jazz.org has been presenting international jazz artists in the incredibly beautiful Harborside Atrium.  These concerts have been made possible from a new partnership with Mack-Cali the Jersey City based developer.  The line up of artists has been a who’s who of jazz today including a bonafide NEA Jazz Master drummer Jimmy Cobb, soul-jazz tenor saxophonist giant Houston Person, local legends such as drummer Winard Harper, as well as the brightest stars in jazz on the rise such as drummer Jerome Jennings, saxophonist Craig Handy, and baritone saxophonist Lauren Sevian. Jimmy Cobb will also be a featured artist at this year’s Riverview Jazz Festival on June 10th in Riverview Fisk Park. “We’re very excited to be partnering with Mack-Cali on the Jazz at Harborside Series, it’s an incredible venue to put our mission into action.  At the Harborside Atrium we can bring world class jazz artists to the community for free!” says RiverviewJazz.org’s Executive Director Bryan Beninghove.  Ilene Jablonski, Senior Vice President of Marketing at Mack-Cali, wholeheartedly agrees: “This series is the product of an exciting community partnership formed to bring world-class entertainment to the residents and tenants of Jersey City.” The Jazz at Harborside Series is a lunchtime performance that happens one Wednesday a month at the Harborside Atrium (147 Harborside Financial Center Platform) from 11:30AM to 1:30PM. Its purpose is to showcase America’s original musical art form by featuring artists of the highest caliber, whether they are jazz icons, local legends, or hot up and comers.  The summer performances in the Harborside Atrium include; Winard Harper June 7th, guitarist Paul Meyers on July 12th, and latin jazz trombonist Doug Beavers on August 9th. RiverviewJazz.org is a nonprofit organization committed to making jazz accessible to modern audiences through events, fundraisers, and their annual jazz fest. Oregon State football to hold ‘fan fest’ in Portland area this summer
Oregon State will stage a football fan fest in the Portland area this summer, the athletic department announced Tuesday afternoon on Twitter. The date is still to be determined.
The event will make up for the Beavers not holding a scrimmage during spring practice, following the successful "Dam City Showcase" in Hillsboro last April that featured a football scrimmage and a nonconference baseball game at the adjacent Ron Tonkin Field. This summer’s fan fest will include a practice and activities for children.
Earlier Tuesday, Beavers coach Gary Andersen addressed the football team’s "need" to return to the Portland area for a practice or scrimmage.
"I think it’s important to do," Andersen said. "Our presence needs to be felt there."
OSU will also hold a fan fest in Bend, where the Beavers will again begin fall camp in late July.
We’re coming back to #DamCity for @BeaverFootball Fan Fest. Practice, activities for kids and hear from Coach A. Details soon. #GoBeavs pic.twitter.com/JPSQ1msXaC
