Images from: Into Albania “The Beauty of Durrës (also called The Beautiful Maiden of Durrës or The Belle of Durrës) is a polychromatic mosaic of the 4th century BC and is the most ancient and important mosaic discovered in Albania.[1][2] The 9 m2 (97 sq ft) mosaic is elliptical in shape and depicts a woman’s head on a black background, surrounded by flowers and other floral elements.[2] It was discovered in 1916 in Durrës, in the middle of the First World War, when Durrës was occupied by the forces of Austria-Hungary. During works by the Austro-Hungarian army to construct fortifications, the military engineers ran into this mosaic, which was unearthed 3.80 m (12.5 ft) deep in the foundations of a house in the “Varosh” quarter, very close to the present-day city centre of Durrës city. Eventually, after the end of the war, The Beauty of Durrës was covered up and lost to view, only to be rediscovered in 1947 by an archaeologist from Durrës, Vangjel Toçi. It became widely known to the world of art history only after 1959.[4] and since 1982 has been on display at the National Historical Museum of Albania in Tirana.
The historian and archaeologist Dr. Moikom Zeqo has stated that the woman represented in the mosaic is the same as one painted on archetypes of amphorae in Apulia and other parts of Southern Italy, with red figures of the Hellenistic era. According to him, the Beauty of Durrës represents the Cretan goddess Eileithyia, who was goddess of childbirth and midwifery, assisting in the healthy delivery of infants.[1]” |Wiki

Beaches, Mountains, Ancient Towns and Low Prices? Albania has it all
Despite Its Dark 20th-Century Past, the Country is Now a Traveller’s Paradise of Amazing Landscapes, Coast and Historic Cities
— Jamie Fullerton | Saturday 6 August 2022
“It used to be rare that journalists would come here,” says Elton Caushi, head of tour operator Albanian Trip, who I meet in the capital, Tirana. “When they did come, they only wanted to talk about blood feuds and sworn virgins.”
The traditions that once dominated tribal politics in Albania’s mountains are interesting, but I’m here to probe a more recent view of the south-east European country. Thanks to its beaches, Unesco-stamped cities and hiking routes, formerly communist Albania is being lauded as a “hot new” European travel destination beyond backpacking and dark tourism.
Tumblr media
Albania Travel Map
For decades, Albania had a reputation as a dangerous, no-go country, thanks largely to its being politically isolated under dictator Enver Hoxha, who died in 1985. After Albania’s 1997 civil war and the end of the Kosovo war in 1999, more visitors gradually started coming to Albania, attracted partly by prices lower than in Greece and Italy. In 2009, 1.9 million tourists travelled to Albania; in 2019, the last full pre-Covid year, the figure was 6.4 million.
The food here may be a factor in this shift. I’m with Caushi in a nameless restaurant at 1001 Bardhok Biba, a street close to the city centre. “The tourists haven’t found it – it’s mainly drivers eating here,” he says. I breakfast on sumptuous tasqebap – a soupy mix of veal, garlic, onions and tomato sauce – before Caushi takes me for 9am dessert at Mon Amour, a Parisian-style patisserie. We pay a non-Parisian 390 lek (£2.80) for coffee and baklava pastries with ice-cream.
After breakfast I drive to Dhërmi, a village that has seen myriad hotels pop up along its coast over the past decade. I arrive at the beginning of Kala, one of many small dance music festivals that have sprung up along the Riviera, with dancefloors on the sand.
Tumblr media

Dhërmi’s main, non-festival beach is clean, neatly covered in sunbeds and flanked by restaurants. All fine if you just want to lie back and plough through your Kindle. The small beaches north of here, such as Splendor Del Mar and Empire Beach Resort, feel gloriously Balearic in comparison. Swimming in the clear, turquoise sea off Splendor is clock-slowingly tranquil. I haven’t had a better dip outside Asia.
Later, on a walk to nearby Gjipe beach – sandy, lovely, isolated, with zero hotel development – I spot a concrete bunker and stare at this dome with a sea view: a grey lump of cold war paranoia on an otherwise idyllic coast.
Tumblr media

I see another bunker. Then another, in the hills when I drive back to Dhërmi. I begin counting them, but soon realise bunkers are as common here as the sunbathing skinks. About 173,371 were reportedly built in Albania between 1975 and 1983, as Hoxha prepared for potential attack.
Caushi warned me that the touristy cities of Durrës and Sarandë were already attracting enough holidaymakers to make them unpleasantly crowded. I stop instead in Gjirokastër and Berat: two smaller cities of renowned beauty.
I prepare by reading Chronicle in Stone, the 1971 novel by Ismail Kadare – Albania’s noted author and Gjirokastër resident. In the book the romance of Gjirokastër’s steep, bumpy paths, snaking around buildings such as Skenduli House and Zekate House – owned by elite families and now museums – shines through his story of 1940s bombardments.
‘When I Was A Child In The 2000s, To See A Tourist Was Like Seeing An Alien’
Blero Topulli, Guide
His ink covers the city – my hotel is on Ismael Kadare Street. However, Gjirokastër was once as famous for cannabis as Kadare, according to Blero Topulli, who works in the castle of Gjirokastër. “It was considered one of the most dangerous points in Europe – we had a village producing tonnes of cannabis,” he says. “When I was a child in the 2000s, to see a tourist was like seeing an alien.”
We meet in the castle overlooking the village of Lazarat, which was rife with illegal drug production until a police crackdown in the mid-2010s.
Tumblr media
Tirana has a rich cafe culture. Photograph: Andfoto/Alamy
Thanks to its historical architecture, Gjirokastër became a Unesco site in 2005, but Topulli says tourists didn’t arrive in significant numbers until the cannabis gangsters had left. We walk the bazaar streets, renovated five years ago for this tourism tilt, but it’s easy to escape this mildly Disneyfied pocket of the city. Topulli takes me uphill to watch the sunset, passing mansions depicted by Edward Lear in the mid-19th century.
“Listen: the wind in the trees sounds like the sea,” says Topolli. He’s right: it laps my ears as the castle’s lights flick on, a calming comedown after Kala’s beach parties.
Further north in Berat, also a Unesco-listed city, I walk up to the castle. Berat has a similar historic richness to Gjirokastër – and similarly steep climbs – but feels more rugged.
The breezy lack of health and safety concerns in Berat makes it even more enjoyable. At the Red Mosque ruins, I scurry up the scarily thin tower’s pitch-black interior, popping my head over the top so vertigo can override my rising claustrophobia.

“I came to Albania because you can do beach, cities and hiking in a week,” a US tourist tells me. Indeed, after a two-hour drive to Tirana it’s a two-hour bus ride to Shkodër, gateway to the Albanian Alps.
I do a classic trek: the 17km route between Valbona and Theth in the Valbona Valley national park. To get in the mood, I read Edith Durham’s High Albania, the British writer’s document of the region’s tribes, based on her 1908 treks. The toughness of the climb, with horse-dotted woods giving way to craggy half-paths, threatens to outmatch the wild beauty of the area. But three hours in I reach the peak, and the forest-splashed views work their magic: it’s Swiss-level stunning.
In mountain-cradled Theth, my guesthouse pancake breakfast is soundtracked by the tense “click-click-click” of diggers. The snaking road to Shkodër was surfaced with asphalt for the first time last year.
Caushi says that some fear Theth’s new highway could lead to overtourism. “But I’m happy for my friends there: 15 years ago you’d see a cow, a chicken, a cornfield. Now they can get to school faster, to the hospital … it’s good for the locals.”
Tumblr media

Good for me too, I think, as my bus to Shkodër glides over asphalt.
I finish back in Tirana, staying at Hotel Boutique Kotoni in the city centre, then the quieter Morina hotel, next to the Grand Park of Tirana. Being the capital city of a country with an anti-capitalist regime until 1992, Tirana didn’t get proper bars until well into the 1990s, according to Caushi. After a construction boom in the 2000s, the city now has a population of 560,000. Hoxha’s opulent former residence has a trendy cafe directly in front of it.
I’m in Tirana fleetingly, but visit Bunkart 1, Hoxha’s underground complex, which is now a museum and art space. Exhibitions outline decades of dictatorship, interspersed with art installations. Wrongly balanced, the mix of dark history and video art could come across as distastefully hipster-ish, but it’s captivatingly moving.
Another reminder of how quickly a place can change.

"Bukuria e Durrësit" • Bukuria e Durrësit or The Beauty of Durrës is a 4th century BC mosaic discovered in Durrës, Albania in 1916. • The mosaic has since been moved to The National Historical Museum in Tirana, Albania where it can been seen in the main hall of antiquities. • I was inspired to create my version after seeing my friend (and muse) @vilmagjonzeneli 's self-portrait. It was such a beautiful and expressive shot and I couldn't resist (just kidding, I got her permission, of course. Don't be weird, always ask for consent before using an artist's work) and seriously, do yourself a davor and check out her page, she is incredible. • • • #artatheartist #albanian #art #illyrian #bukuriaedurresit #albanianartist #albanianart #lineart #traditionalart #digitalart #micronart #mosaic #portrait #beautifulbizarre #devianart #fantasyart #mythologyart #hellenistic #muse #goddess #hyjnesha #albania (at Albania, Durrës) https://www.instagram.com/p/CQcT-e3rMFi/?utm_medium=tumblr

14th April >> (@VaticanNews By Andrea Tornielli) #PopeFrancis #Pope Francis ~ From a young migrant, educated as an atheist, to bishop in Albania. 43-year-old Arjan Dodaj was born in Laç-Kurbin on the coast of Albania.
He arrived in Italy by boat in 1993, became a welder, discovered the faith that his grandmother had transmitted to him by singing, and became a priest. Three years ago, he returned to Albania. The Pope has appointed him an auxiliary bishop of Tiranë.
By Andrea Tornielli
I could still detect in his voice, on the phone from Tiranë, the surprise of what has just happened to him. It’s not long since he received the announcement of the appointment he has received. His is one of the many small, but great stories, of which the daily life of the Church is interwoven.
43-year-old Arjan Dodaj was born in Laç-Kurbin on the coast of Albania. He arrived in Italy as a migrant after crossing the Adriatic Sea on a boat. At the age of 16, he fled his country on a hot and starry night in September 1993, seeking a future and a way to help his poor family. He would work more than ten hours a day as a welder and gardener. Eventually, he came across a community that made him feel at home. There, he discovered the Christian faith, of which there was already a trace in his DNA thanks to the songs his grandmother used to sing. Pope St John Paul II ordained him ten years later as a member of the Priestly Fraternity of the Sons of the Cross, House of Mary Community, based in Rome. In 2017, he returned to his country as a Fidei Donum priest. This past 9 April, Pope Francis appointed him auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Tiranë-Durrës.
Childhood
Arjan was born and raised in a communist, Albanian family. His education was atheistic. "I was born in a context where, unfortunately, every sign that recalled the faith was banned. In the first years of my life, I never heard of God's existence. My parents unfortunately endured, in a terrible way, the effect of communism. But my grandparents prayed to the Lord".
It was Arjan's maternal grandmother who instilled in him the first words of faith. "My first encounter with the things of God is like a refrain inside my head, inside my soul. Despite the threats, my grandmother was totally free in living a life of prayer. In their day, not knowing how to write, they learned their prayers by singing. And so, by learning prayers that rhymed, they knew doctrine. Only when I arrived in Italy did I discover that many things, about the sacraments for example, she had told me about them while singing at home, while working, while cleaning. She sang. That's how I learned too. I learned the second part of the Hail Mary. She always made me say the second part. That's how God worked with me."
Migrant
"I arrived in Italy right after the fall of Communism”, says the newly elected Bishop. “At that moment it was not possible to obtain regular visas. The only way was by motorboat. Unfortunately, there were some boats that left, which, alas, did not arrive".
Shortly after the fall of communism, Arjan tried to leave the country. "Like many other boys, I had made many attempts. One of the first times, the boat was damaged…. Today, I thank the Lord that it didn't depart, because I don't know what would have happened to us – we were all crushed together, crowded together. Indescribable adventures, a real exodus. Then in the following attempts, I was able to get on one of those boats that left from the coast of my city, from this very beautiful lagoon, where I had gone many times as a child. We left the night of 15 September 1993. Thank God, the sea was very calm. The Lord preserved us. I remember very well that at that moment, it was my whole existence that was migrating. My story, as it were, was leaving that coast, with that night sky full of stars. I felt a tear inside me of those bonds, with my life, with my family".
Reflecting on that experience the new Auxiliary Bishop of Tiranë points out: "Today, many people are seen arriving on the boats. I think one should think of their tears, their sacrifices, the very painful vicissitudes they are living. They wouldn’t be coming if their lives were not painful".
Some of Arjan’s friends had emigrated to Italy shortly before him. Thanks to them, Arjan found refuge in Dronero, in the northern Italian province of Cuneo, near Turin. There he became an apprentice to a welder. "We used to weld bicycle frames. Then I also did many other jobs, in construction and gardening. This way, I could help support my family because we were really very poor". Other friends invited him to a meeting in the parish. "I worked a lot, sometimes even more than ten hours a day. So, in the evening I would arrive home tired. I didn't have many friends. They told me that there was a nice group of young people in the parish, led by Father Massimo, who was a member of the House of Mary Community. I had a really good time! I found the support I needed in that very delicate phase of my youth”.
Believer and priest
Arjan was baptized in 1997. Later, he asked to be welcomed into the Priestly Fraternity of the Sons of the Cross, House of Mary Community, in Rome. There, he studied to become a priest. This decision was difficult for his parents to accept. Ten years after he landed in Italy, it was Pope John Paul II who laid his hands on his head in St. Peter's Basilica.
"In 1993, the year I arrived in Italy, St. John Paul II visited Albania. The country had just come out of dictatorship. It seemed like an open trench. There was a lot of misery and poverty, but at the same time a thirst for novelty. I too, like many children and many other people, remember all the people who accompanied the Pope's car along the side of the roads from Tiranë to Shkodër. He has always accompanied me, and so has our holy Mother Teresa. As we were leaving the dictatorship, she poured out on us that balm of tenderness, of love, of goodness, of hope that she knew how to give to so many poor people in various parts of the world".
Father Dodaj worked in various parishes and became chaplain of the Albanian Community in Rome. In 2017, the Archbishop of Tiranë, George Anthony Frendo, asked Father Arjan to serve in the archdiocese. Both the superior of the House of Mary Community, Father Giacomo Martinelli, and the Cardinal Vicar of Rome, Angelo De Donatis, agreed. The priest returned to his country as a Fidei Donum, priest, that is, as a priest temporarily providing service in a diocese other than the one in which he is officially incardinated.
Bishop
About his appointment as auxiliary bishop, Father Dodaj said, "Honestly, I never, ever thought about it or desired such a thing. I was very happy to live in a parish context, the daily family context that I have always lived, with my community, with the parishioners with the people entrusted to us. Now I have received this further call, this appointment of the Holy Father Pope Francis. I have welcomed it with trust in the Lord, in Our Lady, and with obedience to the Church".
Albania was the first European country visited by Pope Francis. It has always been a symbol of successful coexistence among peoples professing different religions. Christians of other confessions and Muslim believers are also rejoicing with the Pope's choice. Father Dodaj clarifies the type of “coexistence” that his country enjoys: "It is not religious tolerance. It is very important to change words and understand that for us it is harmony, familiarity, a spirit of great collaboration and mutual support".

Moments Before The Flood - Carl De Keyzer
‘‘  In this project, beauty is a kind of lure, capturing the viewers attention and drawing them into the scene. This is essential, because  what at first appear to be aesthetically pleasing images turn out, upon  closer inspection, to be filled with raw, hard-hitting themes. Beneath  the inviting surface, they crackle with cruel realities. Since the start of his career thirty years ago, Carl De Keyzer has never  stood still, and in Moments Before the Flood, he takes a major new step  in his oeuvre. After the dramatic black-and-white photography of his  earliest books and the ironic, historiographic perspective of his work  from the 1990s, he has become an almost detached observer, probing the  boundaries of drama and aesthetics. This move is bold, but also  inevitable. Like the coast that questions the mainland, these  photographs question the very act of looking.‘‘
