How they met: Yknow how Beast! Dazai has knowledge of the OG universe? Yeah, so does Beast! Ranpo because why wouldn't he, he knows everything after all!! So, no one knows who the PM boss is but the ADA wants to send someone in for a meeting to gather information, and who better to send than their genius?

B! Dazai is a real flirty guy, just like his OG self, but obviously our beloved detective falls for none of that:

B! Dazai: oh what an adorable guy they sent! B! Ranpo: *ignores him.* B! Dazai: got a name pretty boy? B! Ranpo: Ranpo Edogawa. B! Dazai: I'll call ya Sherly, since you're like Sherlock Holmes!! B! Ranpo: (omg why did I agree to this...)

Eventually, B! Ranpo reveals he knows about the OG universe and his tampering with the Book to the let Oda live, instead of being angry that his plan was ruined he... was relieved? Of course B! Ranpo knew why, he was glad he didn't have to shoulder this burden alone: more flirting continued and, the detective bit back out of annoyance and pure interest: not only did this make the PM boss a flustered mess, but he also pleaded for him to visit as often as he could.

Curiousity got the best of the detective and, he went.

Lots of "B! Ranpo just reading while B! Dazai glances over his shoulder" kinda thing.

B! Ranpo is really physically affectionate while B! Dazai is very deprived of it, once the detective saw his reaction, hugs and ruffling hair became a regular.

Feelings began to stir up but no one admitted anything.

Until B! Dazai asked him out, while drinking tea.

Normal date?? NOPE! They set fire to a rich guy's mansion and ran on the rooftops like robin hood.

Rumor has it they kissed!

“No one has to know, pretty boy,” Chuuya whispers into Kunikida’s ear, hot breath ghosting past his skin, and Kunikida fails to surpress the shiver that crawls up his spine. This is wrong, he thinks, as Chuuya’s hands snake under his shirt, dragging fingernails up and down his stomach. His back is pressed firmly against the wall. Their lips are mere inches apart. He shouldn't. The Port Mafia is bad. Their moral code and system and environment is bad. Their boss’s right hand man is especially bad— Kunikida hisses in surprise when Chuuya squeezes his waist hard enough to bruise, pinning him with a possessive stare, and he takes a second to wonder how he got himself into this situation before he falls over the edge. Their lips clash together in a messy affair and Kunikida’s knees almost give out. He’s only held up by Chuuya’s grip, and when he pulls away with a gasp, he’s hit with a devastatingly handsome smirk. “Well?” Chuuya asks, twirling his index finger around Kunikida’s hair. Kunikida is only so strong. His face burns red as he gives in to desire. “Fine. One night.” Chuuya’s smirk widens. “If you’re sure you won't come crawling back for more,” he laughs, tugging.

"Is it over now?" Dazai asks, glancing around the area nonchalantly. Well, at least it seems nonchalant to a regular, outsider's point of view. But Ranpo knows better than that. They can see the way Dazai's shoulders are relaxed in a forced manner, like he's fighting to keep them from tensing, completely unnatural. Though Dazai is a former Port Mafia Executive, Ranpo supposes everyone has their fears. And a swarm of feral dogs dashing in their direction, such that Dazai and Ranpo were forced to duck into an alleyway to avoid them, would surprise just about anyone. "Yeah. Probably an area with a lot of strays," Ranpo agrees. Dazai doesn't ease up, but he plasters on a bright smile, shrugging. "Oh well! Those dogs were so ugly, they reminded me of Chuuya a little bit. Maybe I should tell them that I saw their extended family dashing down the street today!" His smile isn't real, and Ranpo doesn't bother calling him out. It's none of their business. They don't need to confront what Dazai clearly isn't ready to confront himself. "Let's go," Ranpo says, stepping out of the alleyway after ensuring that the dogs are really gone. "I want ice-cream." "Whatever you say, Ranpo-san!" Dazai replies.

It's pointless. He knows that. There's something haunted in Dazai's eyes; he's planning something bigger than Ranpo, bigger than Dazai himself. He's giving his all for that, and there's no stopping, there's no changing his mind. Ranpo had no plans of trying, either way.

Ranpo always knew this (them) meant nothing.

Still.

"Do you expect me to apologize?" Dazai asks, and that makes Ranpo laughs. It feels performative, empty.

"I don't expect anything from you," they reply.

And then, in an action that feels nothing but contradictory, they take one of their hands to the bandage covering Dazai's eye.

When they try to take it off, Dazai lets them. He blinks slowly at him when the bandage falls, dark brown eyes finding Ranpo's green ones, and it feels like he's seeing him from the first time.

And that's enough.

Drummer Lucy M. will forever live rent free in my head. She'd be so cool, and pretty I love her. She would start taking lessons from an early age, taking her time until she could play it like second nature. Mark would've taken two weeks of lessons alongside her (shhh ik it won't make sense given the timeline and how they would probably still be in Canada, and a town near the Mississippi but shhh) because he thought it'd make him look cool, but gave up too soon, and went on to be an amazing self proclaimed musician, trying multiple genres because he can't choose one (he's actually has pretty good vocal range, but his ego is infuriating to those close to him. His outfits are usually made for fan service, and Lucy, his twin in everything but blood, makes fun of him 'You look like a hotdog mascot abshshksb'.)

Atsushi would look so good with a saxophone. He'd be under training for a while since his skills are pretty rusty at best, but his potential is there, with Fukuzawa, and Naomi having complete faith in him from the start. He gets his debut a few months later. His signature haircut grows out a little until it looked decent (looks like the one in beast), he usually wore caps, hoods, a hat like tricky's from subway surfers, or maybe have it pulled back with multiple bobby pins. His popularity skyrockets after a few performances, and let me tell you the people love this albino.

The Guild productions™ is an international agency with it's main branch in America, they attempted to recruit Atsushi into their ranks, using underhanded tricks, nearly succeeding for a little over a week before their Japanese branch nearly went bankrupt, courtesy of souheki; they had to give up Atsushi, and Lucy left along with him to work as a barista in the Agency's favorite cafe, rumours about her are spreading like rapid fire, and she tries to act like she couldn't care less (She has had a little bit of a break down when too many people gave her judgemental stares at the grocery store.). Louisa A, the Guild's manager, manages to pull them, and the president, steadily rebuilding their reputation. They'll never go back to their prime days in Japan though.

The Violinists of the show would be Mōri, Dazai (former), Akutagawa (former), and Yōsano.

Akutagawa would've been a very capable violinist in the past, and continued to play despite Dazai's absence in hope of proving himself to him. Chūya, and Gin convinced him to try something different after gaining Dazai's approval (something like what happened during the guild arc), and that's when he found out how well he went with a trombone. Don't question it. He'd look great with one, and by now he's on the fast track to finishing his treatment and getting cured from his lung illness, because he's actually receiving medical attention (courtesy of the black lizard + Higuchi and Chūya, and the fact that it isn't as severe as canon.). I also read somewhere that playing brass instruments helps with the lungs or something.

I can definitely see Kōyō playing either a flute or a harp with the 'Black Port' orchestra, having the Japanese biwa as a side hobby.

Oda's voice would be such heaven on earth to listen to. He was originally a genius in the music industry, having worked with multiple choirs, and collaborating with multiple artists, yet preferring to be a soloist. However, one day, he up and left the entertainment world behind at the age of sixteen without so much as a notice, only to return as a backstage assistant in the 'Black Port' orchestra, not drawing any attention to himself, and refusing to do anything music related if anyone asked. He left that same orchestra after three years due to unknown reasons, though it was rumoured to be related to an agency called 'Mimic', and the maestro (and violinist) of said orchestra. Dazai Osamu, 'The Black Dove of the Port', went off the grid weeks after that. He isn't recognisable at first sight, but people eventually catch on as he debuts with an electric guitarist under one of the country's best agencies two years later. He would mentor the younger recruits from time to time.

Fyodor's Cello should become a fic name if it already isn't.

Kunikida would be an electric guitarist fight me.

Chūya would've be one of the best vocalists in the industry, being an on and off member with the 'Black Port' until he turned 15, officially joining as a snare drum player. He gets assigned to practice with a group that called themselves 'The Flags', they are still alive, happy, and well (I am definitely not escaping reality leave me alone). He was the former drummer, and lead singer with a band of outcast kids during his middle school years because I said so, and he attended lessons with Michiz�� because redheads solidarity. (Sheep disbanded teen rock band real?!)

Nathaniel might have basic knowledge of how to play an organ because why not??

Kyōka would be a natural pianist, a prodigy in the making, with Kōyō, and Atsushi fighting for the spot of 'biggest fan'. She was recruited by Atsushi despite Kōyō's complete refusal; she came around eventually, and started being more supportive of her growing on her own.

Kenji country music artist Miyazawa got scouted by Fukuzawa after watching him preform beautifully in the middle of a market. Everyone at the performance was smiling uncontrollably, even Fukuzawa being affected. He can play the ukulele, and a normal guitar too.

Yōsano would continue her violin career after quitting lessons with Mōri, but under Fukuzawa's agency. She was proud of her capability, and recognizing it as her own, still flinching slightly at the mention of her former mentor. (He didn't SA her get your mind out the gutter you weirdos, he was just too strict, and his methods weren't conventional, or suitable for eleven years olds)

Naomi is the agency's esteemed manager, and Haruno is Fukuzawa's direct secretary.

Rampo would be an enigma in his own right, one of the best directors that created revolutionary master pieces throughout the 21st century. The agency was founded to support his child acting career, and to serve as a somewhat safe home for him, before he decided to become a director. His reputation is a mix of good and bad, mostly speaking of his random schedules, and sweet tooth, but he couldn't care less. He only starts new projects when he's in the right mood, he's unpredictable like that. He's close friends with one of the Guild's members that specializes in mystery movies, specifically focused on psychological horror; they cause trouble together a lot despite how usually unsociable the latter is.

Jun'nichirō plays on the keyboard, and his audience loves his awkward + cute personality; he's besties with Atsushi, and is always either seen with him, or Kenji. The audience know of him having a sister, but overprotective big brother Juni would never allow her to appear on stage, much less allow the audience to know her name (no incest crap this is a slightly happier life without Abilities)

Chuuya finds himself at the top of the tallest Port Mafia building, looking over the edge with a disdainful sneer, when Kunikida says, “It’s okay to grieve, you know.”

Chuuya’s first instinct is to yell. The idea that he would care enough to grieve his death, when he was nothing more than an empty, hollow shell of a puppeteer, is insulting. Chuuya has never held an ounce of respect nor trust for him, and his death is, if anything, a blessing.

The floor beneath his feet crack under the pressure. He quickly regains control of his ability, not realising he was exerting gravity again.

“I do not grieve for a man that was nothing,” Chuuya hisses. He turns his back to the edge, leaning backwards. Kunikida doesn’t move to stop him. “I could pull the exact same thing he did right now and no one would care, because it was cowardly and disgusting and—”

“I would care,” Kunikida interrupts. “I think you do too.”

Chuuya thinks, if it was anybody else who said those words, he’d have already punched them into the ground.

Chuuya despises men who act like they can see right through him—understand his thoughts and feelings to his very core and strip him of all his walls. But while he did it to use him like a pawn, Kunikida simply looks right past.

It’s funny. They couldn’t be more different.

Chuuya isn’t grieving, but maybe he’s too empty to feel anything at all. Maybe the void dragged him in and left him an equally hollow shell when it disappeared.

“He was a single-minded stubborn fuck,” Chuuya says. “Nothing I did could have stopped him from achieving his goals. That’s what I hate the most.”

“You like me, though,” Kunikida whispers.

“…I don’t.”

“You do.” Kunikida’s voice doesn’t waver. Not once. He’s always stood his ground and fought for what he wants, never bending his ideals no matter what Chuuya does—

Huh. Maybe he does like Kunikida. Maybe the implications of that make it worse.

He doesn’t feel like confronting that right now. With two large steps forward, Chuuya reaches for Kunikida’s ribbon and drags him into a kiss, emptying his thoughts.

“What,” Dazai says, and he cannot emphasise enough, “the hell is that.”

Ranpo pouts, waving the object in his hands. “Are you dumb? Obviously it’s a bouquet of roses.”

“I know what those are!” Dazai snaps. “I mean what the hell are you doing giving it to me?”

“Can’t I spoil my favourite princess?”

The nickname makes Dazai flush red. “That is not— I’m leaving.” They grab their cane, ready to book it out of the office, but Ranpo blocks their path resolutely.

Dazai is going to die if this goes on any longer. They can feel eyes on them already—Kenji is beaming, Yosano is rolling her eyes, and Sigma is giving them the most distasteful look ever.

Plastering on a fake, bright smile that pulls at their cheeks and makes their lips hurt, Dazai graciously accepts the bouquet from Ranpo. “Thank you, my sugar plum! I should go put these in a vase at my dorm! If you’ll excuse me.”

“I’ll come with you,” Ranpo shrugs, hooking their arms together. Dazai stumbles when he starts dragging them, barely keeping up. Kunikida doesn’t bother scolding them for ditching.

When they’re far enough from the office such that no one can hear them anymore, Dazai huffs and looks down at the roses. “You’re so fucking embarrassing.”

“You’re not saying you don’t like it.”

“You probably didn’t even buy these. I bet Kenji-kun grew them for you.”

“He did! Because he knew how precious my beautiful girlfriend is—”

Dazai smashes the bouquet in Ranpo’s face, blushing furiously. “Shut up!”

OP, I hope you understand that you have unleashed a monster considering how many BSD fics I consumed. But that said, I'll try to keep it short and strictly gen for this ask, then just reblog with the rest (some do have implied ships, though). Most of them are just fluff and one-shots. And I haven't really read much fanfic recently, so most of these are my bookmarks from before I even really got into this blog and my memory on them might be shaky; generally, I either liked them because good writing, good characterization, good analysis, and/or it was just too funny/too interesting to not bookmark. Some might have Americanisms/Westernisms of things that probably don't really happen in Japan (probably?) and some might have slight character assassinations, but I don't think anything should be too gratuitously unforgivable. Also, all opinions are my own and do not reflect on either the writing or the author's original intent.

“THAT’S who you were talking about?!” Katai demands, gesturing wildly with one hand. “Kunikida, that’s a Port Mafia executive!”

Chuuya rolls their eyes.

Kunikida bristles. “You’re concerned about me? Look at who you’re holding hands with!” This, he thinks, is a fair argument to make. Because Katai is holding hands with one Kajii Motojirou, the Port Mafia’s notorious lemon bomber, while Chuuya is a well-mannered, polite, individual who just happens to also work for the mafia. There’s a pretty big difference between the two, as far as Kunikida is concerned.

Needless to say, when Katai said he would be introducing his partner to Kunikida, he did not expect to see a familiar face. Definitely not mafia familiar.

“You hate the mafia,” Kunikida points out.

“So do you!”

“Well—”

“As far as I’m concerned,” Chuuya cuts in, “you’re both hypocrites. You two can argue all you want, but if this goes on for too much longer, Kajii and I are going to ditch you and go out ourselves.”

Kajii grins, maniacal and dangerous. Kunikida tenses.

But…he supposes Chuuya gets like that sometimes too. The wild, carefree, laughter. The wicked glint in their eyes. And while it scared Kunikida at first, it’s now one of the endless things about Chuuya that he finds indescribable beauty in.

So maybe he can trust Katai and give Kajii a chance.

“It could have ended differently,” Mushitarou spits out. It stings, like a knife to the gut; he says it like Nikolai doesn’t care. Like he hasn’t lost hours upon hours of sleep combing through his memories pointing out all of the moments he could have done something—anything—to change the ending.

“I know!” he snaps, hands clenched into fists at his side. Curled so tight his fingernails are drawing blood. He knows, he knows, he knows. They could have stopped Nathaniel, could have talked him out of it. They could have simply escaped with him in tow.

They could have done any number of things, but now—

Now, it’s too late.

It could have ended differently, but they both missed every opportunity to bring about the needed change, and now they’re left alone with the broken pieces. Nathaniel was the blood binding them together, and with him gone…

“Just get out of here,” Mushitarou orders. “I don’t ever want to see you again.”

Nikolai doesn’t argue. He just leaves.

Ranpo didn’t go to the funeral.

He knew exactly where and when it happened, but the gathering was so small they would have instantly noticed an enemy in their midst. It wasn’t his place to intrude regardless. He never meant that much to Dazai.

Then again, no one did.

He refused to let himself care about anyone. And now he’s gone.

Ranpo sits in the wet grass, back against the headstone, face tilted towards the sky. Two weeks ago, they were in Dazai’s bed, back pressed against the mattress, teeth sinking into his skin. And now—

“Why?” they whisper.

No answer comes. The dead cannot speak. Ranpo knows this all too well.

The dead do nothing but leave you with unanswered questions and ghosts that you cannot shake.

Dazai never even fully removed his bandages when they were together. It meant nothing to him, and Ranpo knows this—has always known this, but—

The one thing he doesn’t know is why Dazai jumped. The one thing Ultra Deduction cannot help him figure out is Dazai’s motivation. Ranpo has tossed and turned for hours, rolling the question through his head in the middle of the night, but they always come up empty.

It doesn’t make sense.

They knew he wanted to die—knew he planned it out, down to the second.

But he would never explain why.

Now, he never will.

“Are you sure about that?” Ranpo whispers, their breath warm against Dazai’s mouth. Their fingers tighten in his hair, dragging his head backwards so he’s forced to look them in the eye. He scarcely remembers what they were even arguing about. He’s far more interested in getting Ranpo’s lips back on his. It’s a bad idea on every level, and it’s inevitable that Dazai is going to simply discard them once he’s had his fill. But until that happens— “I am.” He lifts a hand to Ranpo’s face, tracing his thumb over their lips. “If I weren’t sure, I wouldn’t be here.” Ranpo hums. “I would love to dissect your brain and figure out how it works,” they say. Heat pools in Dazai’s gut at the thought, and he feels himself smile in response. “Do it, then.” Ranpo grins.

“What are we going to do?” “Well…” Ranpo taps a finger against their chin. “Making out probably wouldn’t help the situation, but it also wouldn’t make it any worse…” Dazai glares at them, despite their eyes being closed. They’re smart enough to know what he’s doing without seeing it. “I think it would make things worse, actually. Lucy-chan kicked us out for flirting, and you want to respond by making out right outside?” “Yes.” Dazai considers this. On one hand, it would be funny. On the other, he’s not sure how much longer his leg will be able to handle standing up. But maybe if he… He grabs Ranpo’s arm, maneuvering them so Dazai’s back is against the wall and Ranpo is across from him. He leans his cane against the wall beside him, then rests his arms around Ranpo’s neck. “I might fall over if we stay out here for too long.” Ranpo snorts. “Don’t worry, I guarantee someone will catch us quickly.” Coming from Ranpo, that’s more than enough reassurance. So Dazai pulls them closer and seals their lips together.
