Very wealthy art collector's very expensive artsy home is for sale. The 2000 modern home in Beverly Hills, CA has 7bds, 11ba, plus a 30 car garage, and is on the market for $39M. So, far, it's been on the market for 104 days, b/c who has $39M? Even if you do, you have to like a very modern, very artsy home. I like it, but I don't have $39M.

Look at that statue in the glass case. And, dotting the color coded bookshelves are the owner's Bearbrick collection. A gold one is in a case on the floor.

With such an art collection, I wonder if all the glass windows are safety glass or something, and how secure the doors are.

There's a mezzanine above, and pay special attention to the lighting on the ceilings. There's a lot of neon.

What a huge living room. Nice fireplace. Looks like the shelves are specially made for the statues.

At these prices the floors and walls must be marble.

In the half bath, have you ever seen a sink like this?

The dining room opens to a patio. I don't know what that wall is- an art installation, wine wall, I don't know. The chandelier is nice, but I'm not crazy about it.

The kitchen is very open. Did you ever notice that the very wealthy people don't like their kitchens to look like kitchens? Like, they hide the appliances.

The primary bedroom is ridiculously large.

There's a fabulous fireplace and display shelving.

Then, there's a separate area with a chaise. Look at the ceiling.

This looks like a home office on one side and a bath on the other.

Here's a dressing room/closet. (Who changes the neon lights? There are so many.)

In this bathroom a very wonky wall must be a form of art.

The secondary bedroom suite is as beautiful as many primary bedrooms I've seen. It's huge. The bath has a ribbed marble sink, which is unusual. And, in the shower, look at the neon along the seat.

There is an entire dining room set out in the garden.

And, this is the behemoth 30 car garage.

HR Giger Bear

Bearbrick Series 12 SF + Secret

Based on the art of HR Giger, and derived from a line named after Stanley Kubrick.

I'm a huge fan of HR Giger's art. From the first time I saw Alien I was captivated by his layered and grotesquely human pieces.

By the time Medicom released these for Be@rbrick series 12, I was already collecting designer toys. I was able to track them down from the wholesaler for the company I was working for at the time. I ended up ordering a whole case - and I ended up getting not only the standard Giger Bear, but also the Secret Bear for this series.

This is also an example of a repaired figure. The black Giger Bear - the Secret Bear for the series - broke in an accident that knocked the displays off of my wall. The legs are attached on a small ball and peg joint, making it hard to repair without keeping the joint from moving.

This figure has been repaired by drilling the ball out with a pin vise, and then using a cut paperclip to glue it back in with support. It's held for 12 years.

And if you're collecting for yourself, and not to try and flip these pieces and turn a profit, then why not repair them? It's still a gorgeous piece. And it makes it even more unique to your collection.

The genius behind this exhibition is artist Eduardo Enrique, inspired by the concept of the human obsession with branded goods and idols.

Upon entering the exhibition, you’ll be greeted with a wide array of provocative mannequins in BDSM toys, harnesses and chains. Hanging from the ceiling, the iconic Nike swoosh dangles above with a bondage rope looped through the middle. 

A quick glance around the room reveals a range of basketballs wrapped in different kinds of sex toys and bondages. Instead of standard couple shots, perhaps you can strike a quick pose with your partner here to spice up your IG feed.

Make your way to the side of the wall and discover this jarring poster of a girl with a golf ball gag strapped around her face. If you can’t get this intriguing design out of your head, you can also purchase one and take it home at Art Now. 

Only 50 customised posters are available and selling fast. So make sure to get your hands on one before it sells out.

Take note that guests aren’t allowed to touch anything in this exhibition. Or if you forget, the wordings on the floor “kindly” reminds you by stating “please do not cross the f***ing line”.

What are these plastic bear toys you’ve been seeing around? Well most know that Bearbricks have become a popular household [hype] product over the past couple years. With so many of them around, how do you know which ones will go up, which ones to invest in as resellers?

Again, a common thing we preach here is, buy what you like. However, we understand money has to be made to survive and live. Important elements we look at mostly would be rarity, trendiness, and longevity. Obviously if something is rare or limited, chances of you being able set the market becomes more likely. If things are trendy, things will sell more quickly, and if things have longevity, it will always be sought out for.

Bearbricks are things we never thought we would be interested in. It almost was ridiculous to think that people were paying hundreds of dollars, even thousands for something that they couldn’t wear. (At least sneakers we could wear…) But as we shopped around more often, Bearbricks were becoming prevalent in this hype world. Instagram was flooding images of walls of these glamorous 1000% Bearbricks. The aftermarket started to go crazy and we couldn’t help but to be curious and buy into this hype.

Knowing literally nothing about Bearbricks or anything of that realm, we see what the “hype” was really about. We don’t know why but we fell right into collecting a few just because how unique this “thing” made us feel. It’s one of those moments where you see in films or in the “art world,” when people tell you to look at a painting and they ask you, “what do you feel?” Well, we think this is something like that.

It’s crazy to think that these things might become art one day… But we think it’s already been in the works. Popular artists like KAWS, Daniel Arsham, Takashi Murakami, Keith Harrington, Jean Basquiat, Andy Warhol, Futura… have already paved ways for [all types of] artists to be “mainstream.” Maybe art is not just a painting on a canvas? Maybe sneakers and Bearbricks have overtaken this medium to reach a broader audience. Either way! For those who think it’s a waste of money, it probably is. For those who think they know what they are buying, then maybe it’s time to take a chance.

Crème opened last year, specializing in Japanese inspired Cremia soft serve ice cream. Cremia is higher in fat and more luxurious. I had some in Japan this year. Crème’s isn’t the same but it’s similar and they even replicated the langue de chat cone that you get in Japan. In addition to soft serve, they have Intelligentsia coffee and pastries.

Food: 5/5 – They had two soft serve flavors: milk and coffee. The soft serve comes with two toppings. The toppings are all powder like, and are dusted all over the exposed ice cream. Don’t miss their housemade cones. The soft serve is luxurious, smooth, and rich. It’s served on a special cone holder with a shovel.

Coffee: 4/5 – I didn’t have any, but most people who came here ordered coffee. It’s from Intelligentsia, so it’s probably pretty good.

Wi-fi: 5/5 – Free, unlimited, secure. The password is on the receipt.

Ambiance: 3/5 – The windows are blacked out so but it’s surprisingly bright inside. There’s a young, urban feel with pastel walls. They project Korean videos on one wall.

Noise: 2/5 – Very loud! Loud music, loud people.

Plugs: 0/5 – I didn’t see any

Parking: 4/5 – Tough in this area, but they have a parking lot in the back. I didn’t use it.

Comfort: 3/5 – Padded chairs, tables aren’t too close together. If it weren’t so loud, it would be pretty comfortable.

Bathroom: 3/5 – One unisex, nothing fancy. The bathroom code is on the receipt.

Thanks to Ars Technica’s unique staff-from-all-over arrangement, we don’t often see how our coworkers organize their home offices. There’s also the matter of us being a bunch of overgrown children who keep, and proudly display, all kinds of toys, action figures, dolls, and other nerdy decorations in our home offices.

Thus, this latest edition of our ongoing “how Ars works” series focuses specifically on the toys and characters that keep watch over our desks, chairs, coffee mugs, and other home-office accoutrements.

Tech Culture Editor Sam Machkovech presents his “forever alone” shelf. More details in next images, but for now: that 8-bit Starry Night print came from the Portland Retro Gaming Expo. And “Bedmaster” is perhaps the rarest board game Sam owns. It’s a ’70s swingers board game. (Sam has never opened it, he insists.)

That Box Boy box set (the one with Japanese text, from a Nintendo 3DS game) is a relatively rare Nintendo creation, and it includes the simplest, most boring Amiibo Nintendo has ever produced.

And a tighter zoom on that relatively rare Spelunky Joe figurine. Sam bee-lined to Spelunky’s PAX booth many, many years ago to claim this from series creator Derek Yu before the game became a speedrunning sensation.

Sam has decided to start collecting Japanese N64 boxes for some reason. He says it’s because the box designs are cooler than the Western ones.

There’s some rugby stuff at top left from the USA-Australia match at Soldier Field in 2015. And at right, you can see my non-obsolete Apple hardware: a 4K Apple TV sitting on top of a Directv Genie, which goes to the 43″ 4K TV I have mounted on the wall across from my desk.”

Senior Reviews Editor Samuel Axon: “We’re big Blizzard fans in our home—such that we have two TVs set up for playing Overwatch together on two PS4s. That all started with World of Warcraft, so we’ve themed parts of our kitchen on WoW. Ragnaros, the fiery end-boss of early WoW, stands guard over our stove, basically saying, ‘By fire, be cooked!'”

Axon: “We also have this more obscure WoW toy on the entry table to the kitchen. It’s based off of the Cinder Kitten WoW in-game pet, and in this case, all that California sunshine powers it to constantly do that waving motion you see on the good luck cats at Chinese restaurants.”

Senior Technology Editor Lee Hutchinson isn’t much for figurines, he says, but he sent along this shot of his Sharknado 3 figure with no further description.

Health Reporter Beth Mole: “I don’t like knick-knacks generally, but we do put out our cozy Christmas Death Star by the window, which was a miraculous sign to mark the birth of a new Star Wars movie.”

So....I started collecting Toys!

Ok not the kind of toys that your kids play with but actual pieces of art. This new obsession of mine can be traced back to the mid-2000s when streetwear was rising and still closely tied to the growing mainstream street art community. Many of the street artists of the late 80s and 90s were starting to scale their street and graphic work into collectable prints and vinyl toys. Now back then, the internet was still kinda new and it wasn't always easy to get this stuff. I always admired it and with artist like Kaws and Futura having ties to the sneaker community I was heavily invested into in the late 2000s, you couldn't help but pay attention. 

Fast forward to current days and my priorities are a little different. I don't collect sneakers like I used to. I have a domestic partner that I just moved into a beautiful two bedroom apartment with. I'm getting older and my collections have shifted to more home art based things. Now granted, as far as dabbling into the world of art, everything is new to me. I just buy what's visually appealing to me. Everyone's sensibilities are a little different so your collecting style may vary. I will say that looking over at my toy wall is very gratifying for me personally. Here's a few highlights of my collection so far. 

Bearbrick 100%:I've amassed a small army of these. They are great starter pieces and include references to pop culture both current and retro, Japanese pop culture and anime, and a bunch of other stuff. They are really small (less than 3 inches tall) but they have great articulation and detail. They come in these blind boxes that cover the outside so you can't see what you're getting until you open it! At around $6 a figure, they are a great way to kick off your collection. Beware though, they are very addictive!

No Strings + Visible Dunny's: From one of the pioneers of collectible urban vinyl toys, Kid Robot, I picked up these two awesome Dunnys. The first I picked up because it reminds me of that Pinocchio Kaws figure that I'll probably never afford. The No-Strings Dunny is designed by Spanish artist WuzOne. Standing at 8 inches tall, it's a pretty large figure. It comes in at a very affordable $60 at Rotofugi.

The second Dunny I picked is this Jason Freeny designed Invisible Dunny. This is one of my favorite pieces! The detailed Dunny skeleton inside is amazing. It stands at 8 inches as well and it's pretty large. There's also a glow in the dark version that's a bit more rare and tends to fetch a hefty price on the open market. This one retails for $75 and you can still find a few floating out there for retail.

These beautiful figures you see above are from artist Huck Gee who's and English born pop artist based out of San Francisco. I didn't know much about Huck Gee when I purchased this figures and I mostly picked them up because they look very cool. I ended up doing a deep dive and finding out a lot more about Huck Gee and his accomplishments as an artist. After years of collaboration and customs, Huck Gee teamed up with Mighty Jaxxx to produce this series of figures based on his Gold Life series. So far he's released 6 figures. 3 full color versions and 3 "shadow" figures. The look and the detail is amazing! Hands down some of my favorite figures. Though they've slowly sold out at most retailers, you can still find a few here and there. They retail for $25 each. 

Kaws x Uniqlo x Peanuts Small Snoopy Plush Toy:

This is my latest pick up from the recent Kaws x Uniqlo collaboration. This time, they added the Peanuts gang to the fold with the focus being on Snoopy and partner Woodstock. To commemorate the collaboration, they included two limited edition plush Snoopy toys. 1 small one and 1 medium. Now I don't have the exact dimensions of them, but as you can see on my shelf above, the small one is pretty large. The medium one is HUGE! As someone who has always wanted to own a Kaws figure and that loves the Peanuts, these were a must cop for me. I have no idea what I'm going to do with the medium one. I don't have a place to display it and I really don't want to damage it. First world problems right!

These are just a peek at my modest collection. I really want to continue to build my collection and find unique pieces that reflect my style. I know it's a bit of an odd hobby but I really enjoy it. Let me know your thoughts down in the comments!

Visiting rapper Timati’s duplex apartment with a collection of contemporary art in Moscow. “I’ve been collecting contemporary art for more than ten years, and now the collection is so large that everything did not fit into the apartment and part of it is in storage,” says Timati.

The designers were asked to make an ultra-modern space that would fill him with energy and allow him to recharge.

On the upper level area are only two bedrooms, and most of the space is a living room. The two floors are connected by an elevator: Children's bedrooms are downstairs, and he lives on top. Now, there’s a plan.

His longtime street artist friend was visiting Moscow for an exhibition and said, “Bring me a canvas and I’ll paint a picture for you.” In a barber shop, he just leaned the canvas against the wall and painted it. How cool is that?

“I really wanted the fantastic bubble chairs that I fell in love with. They are purely decorative, because there is simply no more uncomfortable furniture in the world,” the artist laughs.

His art collection is sick- this Gone Companion figure by KAWS cost $147,483.

Most people decorate with stacks of old vintage suitcases and he has a stack of new designer ones behind the piano. He says the saying on the wall will probably change.

Numerous Bearbrick bears, which have already become Timati's calling card, are scattered throughout the apartment. He began collecting them in 2010 and is still maniacally looking for rare specimens.

Despite his schedule and constant flights, Timati always finds time for the apartment and chooses the many items himself.

Over time, the interior of the apartment will change, but only with the help of art.

He dreams of paintings by artists that he hasn’t gotten to yet, but says he eventually will.

Designs To Inspire Slick Small Home Creativity

We’re delving into some more small home inspiration because with so many expertly executed small space projects it’s hard to feature just a few! Limited space doesn’t mean limited opportunity for great design, it just presents a model to compact and condense awesome ideas into an enriched area. With that said, here are two slick small studio apartment designs by talent at Studio Open, which are fully equipped to inspire and motivate more tiny home creativity.

This tiny apartment in Moscow, Russia measures just 25.6 square metres. It’s high ceiling has made it possible to incorporate a mezzanine to separate out the bedroom. The downstairs floor area is split between a kitchen diner area and a brief lounge.

A single slouchy seat makes a comfortable spot for reading and listening to music. A bookcase is built into the end of a run of closets, which would also make a good spot for a headphone stand to keep the only lounge chair tidy.

A small but stylish floor lamp joins the floor chair.

The tiny dining table for two is just big enough to hold a coffee mug and plate each, and a simple glass vase centrepiece. The pair of modern dining chairs provide the style element to the piece.

The home entryway is a long and wide walkway, with enough room to accommodate a generous amount of storage closets, a shoe storage unit and an entryway bench.

Although the entryway serves its own separate purpose, its wide open layout helps to increase the sense of space in the living room too.

Dining pendant lights flutter down to the dining table, a cascade of folded ellipses.

The small kitchen carries a dark stained wood finish that disrupts the pale room. Its chocolate tone picks out lowlights in the terrazzo floor tiles of the living space, and builds a feeling of depth and warmth.

A stainless steel faucet, pitcher and utensils pot give the kitchen a little sheen. Geometric mosaic tiles spread pattern and add modernity.

On the other side of the glass block wall, a small wooden side table holds an array of toiletries next to the shower enclosure.

Concrete decor gives the grey bathroom an industrial edge.

A large glass fronted cupboard is backlit to brighten the corner of the room.

Under-cabinet lighting illuminates the vanity area.

A sleek grey bathroom sink matches the modern grey toilet pan. A Batman rubber duck adds a touch of humour.

Back in the living room, a spiral staircase design gives rise to the mezzanine level of the apartment.

There is a privacy curtain in place to pull along the balustrades, which helps the bedroom feel cosier at night.

Modern wall sconces light the head of the bed and two tiny bedside shelves.

The dining bar can double as a home workspace. A crisp white media unit blends with the white painted TV wall.

The white TV wall floats against raw concrete decor, which wraps around onto the ceiling of the living room.

A swing arm wall lamp works well as a modern dining light and as practical task lighting. White kitchen bar stools make a light addition to the minimalist table.

The dining table can be positioned for use flush up against the wall or at a 90 degree angle with the one wall kitchen.

The kitchen is revealed from behind bifold doors. A bright coral backsplash packs a lot of punch into the tiny area. A two ring hob and an average sized kitchen sink leave only a little food prep space, so the dining tabletop serves a third use as an extra kitchen worktop.

Storage units installed between the entry door and the sofa are well positioned to be utilised for kitchen storage too.

If the first living room workspace is too busy in the midst of mealtime prep, there is another desk area by the window. A yellow stool makes a happy colour accent.

Wall cabinets cross above a couple of indoor planters.

In the hallway, a bench seat bridges a gap in the cabinetry.

An LED ribbon highlights a boot nook under the bench seat.
