New Zealand is an incredible country that has a lot to offer – from stunning nature to exciting activities and adventures, it is surely one of those places you have to add to your to-do list

If you are starting to plan your New Zealand trip and you need to book fast all the accommodation you need during your stay, I’m here to help! I have carefully chosen the best places in both North Island and South Island and I hope you will read my recommended itineraries.

In this list you will find accommodation options that will fit every pocket, from luxury to budget and all of them have amazing reviews and facilities.

Here are my recommendations:

North Island

We will start our New Zealand journey in the North Island. If you want to see the full itinerary with details on what you can do in each day, check out my article about North Island 1 week road trip.

Day 1 – Auckland

Luxury ($180 NZD and up)

M Social Auckland is a great luxury hotel in Auckland, situated right on the iconic Quay street! They await you with free WiFi all over the accommodation and 190 rooms decorated with great taste and design. They also have a fitness center, on-site restaurant and bar where you can enjoy some very good meals and drinks during your stay.

Cordis, Auckland by Langham Hospitality Group is another great luxury choice in a wonderful neighborhood of the city, located very close to Auckland’s main attractions. The rooms and facilities are super modern and stylish and they even have a very wide range of dining options, a lounge club, a spa and more!

Grand Millennium Auckland is an awesome 5-star hotel located in the heart of Auckland. They have 452 rooms decorated in a very chic and modern way, a gym, a heated indoor pool, a bar and an excellent Japanese restaurant. All in all, you will find there everything you need for a comfortable, luxury stay in Auckland.

Middle priced ($61-180 NZD)

Parnell one bedroom with ensuite is a great middle priced bed and breakfast where you will have your own patio. It’s a 4-star accommodation with a super convenient location, only 16 km away from the airport. They also have a great buffet breakfast that you can enjoy during your stay.

Ponson by Manor Guest House is an amazing 5-star accommodation with middle-priced rooms. It’s located only 18 minutes away from the beach and it has great BBQ facilities and a guest lounge that you can use while you’re there.

The Shakespeare Hotel is another great option situated in Auckland Central Business District with an English-style décor and a pub with its own brewery. They even have an on-site restaurant with great food and a terrace where you can enjoy some amazing meals and drinks!

Budget (up to $61 NZD)

Metro Adventurer Backpackers – a cool hostel situated in the heart of Auckland that offers free WiFi, private parking and even storage lockers where you can keep your luggage. This nice accommodation is only 10 minutes away from Viaduct Harbor, a great place full of restaurants and pubs. You can choose from dormitories and private room, depending on your desire.

iholiday it’s only 10-minutes away from the beach and it also offers private parking (perfect for your rented car!). I recommend it for any type of traveler – solo, couple or even families or groups of friends.

YMCA Hostel is a 4-star accommodation perfect for low budgets. They have separate female and mixed dorm rooms where you can get a good night’s rest and prepare for your next adventure. They also offer luggage storage and laundry!

You can also stay in an airport hotel in Auckland in case you don’t want to discover the city now. These are my recommendations:

Naumi Auckland Airport Hotel, which offers a 5-star luxury accommodation with stylish rooms, located only 3 km away from the airport. They have an on-site restaurant and very spacious rooms.

Holiday Inn Auckland Airport awaits you with an awesome pool and a beautiful garden. They even have a swimming pool, a fitness center and an on-site restaurant. They offer free on-site parking too!

Day 2 – Hobbiton & Waimarino

Luxury ($180 NZD and up)

850 Cameron Motel is a very clean and beautiful place for a luxury stay. This accommodation is situated only 4.5 km away from the glow worm kayak tours, which is very convenient. They have air-conditioned apartments with kitchenette and garden views. I totally recommend it for a solo traveler or for a couple!

The Tauranga on the Waterfront is a great 5-star hotel, located very close to the city center. They await you with free WiFi, free parking and a very nice balcony for some rooms. You can also benefit from the laundry, dryer and luggage storage.

Hotel on Devonport is an amazing accommodation in Tauranga, situated only 10 minutes away from the beach. One of the nicest things about this place is that you get a welcome drink and the daily newspaper once you get there, so you will instantly feel at home!

Middle priced ($61-180 NZD)

Accommodation at Te Puna Motel and Holiday Park is not far from Waimarino and it offers a swimming pool, a kid’s playground and even a BBQ area that you can enjoy during your stay. You will get free parking, laundry facilities and even a games room that I totally recommend for groups of friends for some well-deserved fun after a day of exploring the surrounding area!

Comfort Inn Academy has a swimming pool, hot tub and lots of breakfast options that you can choose from! The rooms are comfortable and tidy, perfect for a good night’s rest in Tauranga.

Hotel Armitage and Conference Centre is another good middle-priced accommodation with big rooms, a great outdoor pool and room service. Of course, you’ll also get free WiFi and an on-site restaurant where you can enjoy some yummy meals.

Budget (up to $61 NZD)

Oh So Central to Tauranga is located only 2.8 km away from the Waimarino Glowworm Kayak tours and it even offers free parking that you can use. The rooms have a flat-screen TV and a gorgeous seating area where you can enjoy the beautiful view.

Tauranga Central Backpackers is only 6.4 km away from the kayak tours. This is a very good budget that offers clean, air-conditioned rooms and access to a shared kitchen and laundry facilities. Overall it has a great money-value balance.

ArtHouse Accommodation Boutique Backpackers is my third and last recommendation for budget travelers in Tauranga. They have shared rooms and a very nice décor that will instantly make you feel at home. You will also be able to use the shared kitchen and the gift shop that you will find at the accommodation.

If you wish to stay in Rotorua instead (although I don’t really recommend it because we personally felt a bit tired driving in the same evening after kayaking), you will find hotels recommendations in Day 3 below.

Day 4 & 5 – Taupo

Luxury ($180 NZD and up)

Chalet Eiger is the place where I stayed in Taupo and I really enjoyed it! This 5-star place is located in a wonderfully secluded place, surrounded by beautiful nature and a lot of fresh air. The owners are very nice and they will make you will at home in the clean and intimate rooms.

Acacia Heights Gardens is a luxury bed and breakfast with many great facilities such as a hot tub, a cozy and awesome seating area and a great continental breakfast that you can enjoy every morning. The rooms are super stylish and chic and I’m sure you will appreciate the tidiness of the place!

Beechtree Motel is another 5-star hotel where you can enjoy a good luxury stay! The rooms are very chic and clean and they also have a big seating area where you can stay and relax with a cup of tea. Some of the rooms even have beautiful lake views!

Middle ($120-180 NZD)

Of course, I have three recommendations for people who are searching for middle-priced hotels. Just remember that the rooms are selling out very fast in New Zealand so it’s totally worth it to book in advance in order to save some money and time.

For the middle budget traveler, my first recommendation is The Reef Resort – Heritage Collection. This great place is situated only 9-minutes away from the beach and they even have a cool outdoor pool that you can use whenever you wish. All the rooms are clean, spacious and full of natural light!

You can also book a room at Acacia Lake View Motel– a hotel situated only 300 meters away from Taupo city center. They have free WiFi all over the place and flat-screen TVs. If you’re the type of traveler who prefers to cook their own food, you should know that some rooms even have a nice kitchen!

Quest Taupo is another cool accommodation where you can choose if you want to stay in an apartment or a studio. They have free WiFi and even an outdoor pool that you can use during the hot summer days if you want to relax and refresh yourself.

Budget (up to $120 NZD)

My first budget recommendation for Taupo is The Lake Motel – an awesome place with great value that offers free WiFi and even free bicycle hire! You can also enjoy some time outside on their outdoor dining area that has BBQ facilities too!

I suggest you take a look at Pouakani Apartment Taupo too, where you will find both apartment and studio style accommodations that you can choose from. This place is very close to the city center (only 800m away) and you will get to see some stunning views from the terrace/balcony!

My last budget recommendation for Taupo is Haka Lodge Taupo – an accommodation located very close to the beach, with stunning reviews! They await you with dormitory and private rooms and a hot spa pool that you can enjoy whenever you wish!

South Island

The days are planned according to my two-week road trip itinerary around the South Island in New Zealand, which is detailed in this article.

Day 1 – Christchurch

Luxury ($180 NZD and above)

Clearview Lodge is the place where I stayed and I consider it to be the perfect option for a couple. It is actually a lovely little chateau that has only 3 rooms in total and all of them are super chic and cozy! It’s the ideal place to relax, eat organic homemade food and drink well-produced wine in the garden! You can see more details and pictures in my detailed description here.

Eco Villa is another cool option located right in the city center! This accommodation is super eco-friendly and it has a garden, outdoor baths and many other facilities. One of the best things about this accommodation is that you can rent bikes for free, that you can use to visit the city and the surrounding area!

Hotel 115 is a nice 4-star hotel with contemporary décors and very clean rooms. One of the craziest things about this hotel is that the city tram runs right through it – so unique and cool! You can choose from many different rooms and I recommend it as a place to relax during your Christchurch stay.

Middle ($61 – 180 NZD)

The Grange B&B is the perfect middle-priced option if you want a cozy place that offers free gourmet breakfast. This hotel is actually a Victorian house with classical and beautiful rooms! They offer free WiFi, free off-street parking and many amazing facilities.

On the other hand, Pomeroys on Kilmore awaits you with a stunning garden where you can stay and just unwind after a day full of walking and discovering the city. Each room has a private bathroom, a TV and is decorated in a very stylish manner. You can also enjoy a very good continental breakfast there!

Rendezvous Hotel Christchurch is my last middle-priced recommendation and the perfect place to stay in if you love contemporary decorations. This hotel even has a fitness center, a business center and an on-site restaurant and bar!

Budget (up to $61 NZD)

For budget travelers I have 3 excellent recommendations as well:

The first one is 3 Rooms At Jellie Park, a gorgeous Bed & Breakfast that I consider to be perfect for a group of people that love breakfast cereals! They have a pretty lounge and sitting area where you can enjoy meals together or just relax.

Christchurch Central Apartment awaits you with a shared kitchen and a beautiful terrace with great views of Port Hills. This accommodation has a very convenient location – only 11 km away from the airport!

Rainbow Selfservice Ensuite is a very clean and nice budget accommodation which offers breakfast each morning. They have both free WiFi and free on-site parking and many useful facilities!

Day 2 – Hokitika

There aren’t that many hotels in Hokitika as they were in Christchurch, that’s why I recommend booking your rooms as soon as possible, as they are gone very fast. You could also stay in Greymouth if you didn’t find any good hotels in Hokitika, but it is a small reroute. Here are my recommendations for Hokitika:

Luxury ($180 NZD and above)

If you want to feel like a king or queen while in Hokitika, then I suggest you book a room at The Villa Holiday Home, which I think it’s perfect for a group of friends. You will get the entire luxury house for 8 people with a gorgeous garden and BBQ, perfect for spending some time together just cooking and relaxing!

If you’re not traveling in a large group, then a room at Beachfront Hotel Hokitika should be perfect for you. This luxury accommodation is located right on the beach, so it has stunning views and it’s the perfect place to get some sleep while listening to the sound of the waves!

Stopforths Motel is another 5-star luxury accommodation situated very close to a beautiful beach. They even offer an astronomy tour, spa baths and bike rentals! What more could you wish for?

Middle ($61 – 180 NZD)

If you’re looking for a great middle-priced accommodation that’s located close both to the city center and the beach, then you should book a room at Jade Court Motor Lodge. You will get free 100MB of WiFi and electric blankets in case the weather is cold. If you want, you can even get the breakfast delivered to your room each morning!

My second middle-priced suggestion is Bella Vista Hokitika – this place is in the heart of Hokitika, very accessible and close to many restaurants and shopping places. It is very close to the beach, too (only 6 minutes away) and the rooms are very bright, clean and cozy.

Shining Star Beachfront Accommodation is very close to the beach and you can rent beautiful beachfront chalets there. Each room has free WiFi and a private balcony and the entire accommodation has its own private beach!

Budget (up to $61 NZD)

Hokitika Pioneer Hotel is a very special and unique place if you’re the kind of person who likes old-style country pubs that also offer rooms for rent! This hotel offers a delicious continental breakfast each morning and some rooms even have a stunning garden view!

Mountain Jade Backpackers is an accommodation located super close to the beach and it offers shared guestrooms for very good prices and great facilities. This hotel is actually a beautiful building from 1995 that even has a great lounge area!

Kaniere Hotel is another good budget hotel that will greet you with a super friendly dog! This is actually a nice country restaurant and bar where you can rent cozy and simple rooms.

Day 5 & 6 – Wanaka

You will spend 2 nights in Wanaka, so finding your ideal accommodation depends on your budget and preferences. Here are my carefully chosen suggestions:

Luxury ($180 NZD and above)

Golfcourse Road Chalets is a 5-star luxury accommodation located on an amazing setting: 10 acres of gardens! You will see amazing views on your window, varying from golf courses, lakes and mountains, depending on your room. The chalets are also very close to the beach!

My second suggestion is West Meadows of Wanaka, a great luxury place where they have free Wi-Fi, free parking and free taxi return from the city center, in case you want to wander there to explore. If you’re going there in the winter, you should know that you can even rent ski equipment there!

The Moorings Motel and Apartments is another cool option located close to both the beach and the city center. The rooms are super tidy, the lounge area is very chill and you can even benefit from the BBQ facilities!

Middle ($61 – 180 NZD)

Oasis Yurt Lodge & The Shed is a great eco option that offers individual Yurt rooms and eco-lodges and a relaxing outdoor dining area. The rooms are clean and cozy, perfect for a good night’s sleep. In case you want to leave right after this day, Wanaka airport is super close to this accommodation – only 7 minutes away!

Wanaka View Motel is located very close to the beach and it offers free Wi-Fi, shared laundry facilities and ski drying room, which is an amazing bonus! Wanaka View Motel is also close to some great restaurants and shops and even the lakefront!

Lake Wanaka Lodge awaits you with a total of 10 studio guest rooms and each of them is very clean and it has either a balcony or a courtyard. You can even eat Japanese meals made by a Japanese chef here!

Budget (up to $61 NZD)

Wanaka has good accommodation options even for budget travelers, even though there aren’t that many. So make sure to book in advance! Here are my recommendations:

YHA Wanaka is a budget accommodation located 4 minutes away from the beach. The rooms are clean and they have an amazing view. You can even choose from dormitory rooms or private rooms, in case you don’t want to share!

Matterhorn South Lodge is also super close to the beach and it awaits you with different accommodation options such as private rooms, mixed dormitory rooms and a female dormitory room. The staff is friendly and the rooms are warm and cozy!

Lake Hawea Hostel is my last recommendation for Wanaka – this place offers free on-site parking, a shared kitchen, shared bathrooms and shared lounge area and BBQ facilities.

Day 7 – Queenstown

Queenstown has a diverse range of high-quality accommodations, ranging from incredible 5-star hotels to budget hostels, from luxury lodges, B&Bs, apartments and holiday parks. It pays off to book ahead especially if you are visiting in high season when all the rooms are booking extremely fast!

Luxury ($180 NZD and above)

QT Queenstown is a gorgeous five-star hotel with incredibly beautiful rooms and a view over the crystal-clear Lake Wakatipu and the Southern Alps! I’m sure you will feel like a queen/king in the stylish, contemporary rooms. They even have an on-site restaurant where the chef cooks the meals in front of you using fresh ingredients!

The Rees Hotel & Luxury Apartments is another awesome five-star option where you will feel like a celebrity. The rooms have a private balcony with stunning views. Everyone can enjoy the free shuttle transfer to the center of Queenstown – perfect for people who want to explore the city!

Hotel St Moritz Queenstown – MGallery by Sofitel is my last luxury recommendation and a great place located close to the beach. They have some super cool facilities such as a fitness center, on-site restaurant and bar and even a garden where you can find hot tubs!

Middle ($61 – 180 NZD)

Haka Lodge Queenstown is a nice place with modern amenities and cool facilities such as free parking and free and unlimited WiFi. It’s located super close to the city center and the staff is super friendly!

Copthorne Hotel & Apartments Queenstown Lakeview is an amazing 4-star hotel with clean, spacious rooms that have a view over Lake Wakatipu! Some rooms even have private courtyards or private balconies where you can unwind and relax during your stay.

JUCY Snooze Queenstown is a 5-star hotel where you can find middle-priced rooms too. This is a super new hotel found right in the heart of the city. The rooms are clean and beautiful and you can even enjoy a rooftop bar and café!

Budget (up to $61 NZD)

For all the budget travelers who want to stay in Queenstown, I recommend YHA Queenstown Central – they have cozy rooms, a cool view of Lake Wakatipu, a guest kitchen and a stylish lounge area! The staff is super friendly and useful and they can help you with information about tours and how to get around!

Absoloot Value Accommodation is located 2 minutes away from the beach, so it’s an ideal place if you want to enjoy a bit of relaxation near the water! You can stay in rooms with private bathrooms and you will also get free unlimited Wi-Fi.

Pinewood Lodge is not far from the city center and the overall design of this place is based on simplicity and tidiness. You will be able to choose from a variety of budget accommodation options.

Day 9 – Milford Sound

For this day I recommend you stay somewhere between Te Anau and Mt Cook, so that you could easily reach Mt Cook early morning the next day. Cromwell, Omarama or Twizel can be some good options. We stayed in Twizel, but I have to warn you that it was almost a 6-hour drive from Milford Sound. If this doesn’t bother you, you can enjoy the stunning views along the way!

Luxury ($180 NZD and above)

Looking for an amazing luxury accommodation where you will feel on top of the world? Matuka Luxury Lodge is a 5-star hotel that has every facility you could wish for, including a gorgeous view of the Southern Alps and private patios. Some rooms even have a spa bath and the shared lounge is simply gorgeous!

Foehn Cottage is a cool boutique-style holiday home perfect for a group of 3 people. It has an outdoor dining area and the rooms are simple and clean. All in all, you will find everything you need here for a comfortable stay near Milford Sound!

Heartland Lodge is my last luxury recommendation in Twizel – this place has amazing rooms, spa baths and you can even book local activities right at the hotel such as trout fishing, Lord of the Rings tours, bird watching and more!

Middle ($61 – 180 NZD)

The Barn at Killin B&B has an incredibly friendly staff and each room has a nice balcony or patio. Included in the price you will also get free breakfast, free WiFi and even a spa pool. Perfect for a comfortable stay in Twizel!

A second option could be Gladstone Cottage, which is also located in Twizel. I strongly recommend this accommodation for a group of 4 people because you will have to rent the entire cottage. This holiday home has a nice terrace and you can even rent bikes there that you can use to discover the surrounding area!

My last middle-priced recommendation is Mountain Chalets Motel – a 4-star motel that offers an outdoor sitting area, free on-site parking and many other facilities that will transform your stay there into a vacation itself!

Budget (up to $61 NZD)

High Country Lodge, Motels & Backpackers awaits you with free on-site parking, a shared kitchen that has all the facilities you will need during your stay and a cozy communal terrace where you can relax and unwind. The rooms are simple, clean and bright – perfect for a good night’s sleep!

Twizel Holiday Park is super close to the city center and many good restaurants and shop. In the price of a room, you will also get 100MB of free WiFi per day, free parking and you can even rent bikes to stroll around.

Dunstan Downs High Country Sheep Station – this accommodation is actually not in Twizel, but in Omarama, not far from the city center. You will also get a delicious breakfast and you can choose from two types of rooms.

Day 10 – Mount Cook

As the accommodation options are limited and pricey near Mt. Cook, I suggest staying in Twizel again or near Lake Tekapo. Middle ($61 – 180 NZD)

Aoraki Mount Cook Alpine Lodge is my first middle-priced recommendation. You will get to stay in some cozy and tidy rooms, perfect for regaining your strength and energy after a full day. You will also get 1GB of free WiFi per room, a shared fully equipped kitchen and even BBQ facilities that you can use whenever you please!

Glentanner Park Centre is a 4-star accommodation that has great panoramic views of Aoraki Mount Cook and Mount Cook National Park. You will be greeted with a big smile and you will get to stay in some pretty rooms. You can choose from self-contained cabins and dormitory rooms, according to your budget or preferences.

Budget (up to $61 NZD)

YHA Mt Cook is an affordable accommodation option located in Mount Cook Village, so you can’t get any closer to Mt. Cook! You will get to benefit from the seasonal BBQ area and you will have free access to a sauna room!

Day 11 – Lake Tekapo

I suggest staying here overnight and then taking a morning flight back to Auckland the next day. If this is your plan too, here are my accommodation recommendations near Lake Tekapo:

Most of the luxury accommodation options near Lake Tekapo are holiday homes, which makes them perfect for a group of people. If this isn’t for you, you can stay near this area or at your accommodation near Mount Cook.

Number 4 is a cool holiday home that can host from 4 to 11 people. They have an awesome living area with a fully equipped kitchen and a big dining table. The entire place is super tidy and nicely decorated, so I’m sure everybody will enjoy it!

Nirvana is another holiday home that you can stay in if you are in a group from 4 to 6 people traveling to New Zealand. This place has everything you will need for a pleasant stay and you will be greeted with a nice view of lakes and mountains.

Middle ($61 – 180 NZD)

Simply Stunning Studio 2 Apartment is my personal recommendation for a couple. It is super cozy and clean and a nice bonus is that the room is air-conditioned. This apartment is very simple and straightforward and it has everything you need for a comfortable stay.

Lake Tekapo Motels & Holiday Park is a 4-star hotel that awaits you with free on-site parking, free WiFi, and an awesome shared lounge where you can relax and enjoy a meal or read a book.

Unfortunately, there are close to none budget accommodation options near Lake Tekapo, but I have a recommendation that’s almost 30 km away:

Fairlie Holiday Park is located in Fairlie and it has simple and tidy rooms, a fully equipped kitchen and a nice shared lounge area. You can even go skiing in the area near this holiday park! If you’re traveling with children, this place is perfect because it has a special playground for them.

All Stars Inn - Christchurch!

All Stars Inn is a youth hostel/backpackers/hotel which has been purposly built to accomodate a wide range of people with different budgets in the heart of Christchurch.

Highlights of the place:

FACILITIES - Super clean, modern facilities! The place has a cool vibe to it and allows people to socialise and chill out at the multiple areas equipped with sofas + tables. Especially a hotspot for young travellers for sure! On a sunny evening you may also want to check out the outdoor BBQ area. There're refridgerators in most of the rooms too, which is amazing!

What was our experience like?

We actually stayed in this hostel quite a few times as our base between different locations such as Akaroa and Kaikoura. We absolutely loved the 24/7 service; very convenient for the late/early arrivals. We always stayed in mixed 8-people dorm rooms to keep our costs as low as possible. Although the room prices are not the cheapest you have incredibly fast unlimited wifi and that is a huge bonus for a lot of people.

These rooms we stayed in in particular are very big/long, but narrow (like a hall way) and at the end of the room there is a big fridge. The window opens up to a small balcony. The design itself is well thought through, for example each bed has a light, two power sockets/USB and a little area to put your phone or a drink for example. One thing we noticed was the fact that it got relatively warm/hot in the rooms, which was a bit irritating at times.

I think what makes this place so special is the social side of it. It is so easy to get to know people and get talking for example we helped out some people in our room to plan their South Island road trip! It can get noisy for sure (due to so many young people/groups!), but it's well controlled and lies within the bounderies.

Whereas we were a big fan of the bathroom facilities the kitchen unfortunately is far too small (only fits 30 people at a time) for the amount of people living in the hostel. There are no windows to open, creating a very hot room and the door is not allowed to stay open.

Besides that we had a really great time at the All Stars Inn and would definitely come back! Its location and value for money does not only makes it the perfect backpackers but also makes an awesome reasonably priced hotel! The tickled cow

Presented to us by CHS the Brief was to create the identity for a restaurant and grill called The Tickled Cow. The restaurant was planned to open in 2017 and was aimed at range of target audiences from young families to ‘hipsters’, this presented particular problems to overcome as appealing to everyone is difficult to achieve. The ‘owner’ of the restaurant already had a design for the interior of the restaurant as well as an atmospheric plan; this meant that the identity and branding had to reflect this. We completed the project in groups of three; this allowed us to create all of the necessary components in the week we were given. Within the week we were also given two sessions of meeting with CHS, one of was a face to face and the second, was an online email ‘date’. On both of the occasions we were able to show any of the work we had done and receive feedback. The live brief was leading up to a pitch on Friday, which was run by CHS and offered a chance to present our identities and concepts as well as, seeing peers work.

We got handed the brief in a presentation led by the company CHS. CHS is an independent communications and content design agency based in Christchurch in Bournemouth. In recent years they have won many awards, and with clients like LV, Barclaycard, B&Q they have a strong client list to back them up.

When we first got the brief we sat down and started breaking down the booklet brief we had been given. We ignored certain aspects of the brief for that moment and instead started focuses on what the brand stood for in order to get an identity that was more than just looks. We found that establishing an idea for the company helped get all three of us thinking the same and helped throughout the process it allowed us to refer back and stay on track. By creating a system it combined all our different styles into a connected, joined identity. The ideals we came up with were also reinforced by a combination of things we knew we didn’t want the brand to be. This mostly included the image of a manly masculine grill, we summarised this into the traditional image of a grill logo ie the type face Rock Well surrounded by the two thick lines.

Our research led to looking into the history of grilling and bbq-ing, we looked at it popularity in the 1950’s as a way of finding a meaningful Logo. The traditional circles and thick lines were therefore something we played with. The origins of the BBQ were something that we also wanted to initially explore, we thought it could allow us to move away from traditional grill themes and open the concept up slightly. Although cooking on fire has been around for hundreds of year and has no origins we roughly remembered that the style of BBQ we are familiar with comes from the Caribbean area, we were interested therefore to explore this further. On exploring the origins we found that the word is one of only a few that we use from that culture, another being Cannibalism. The stereotype of a happy easy life really suited the idea of a Tickled Cow. We thought by the incorporating the warmth and colour of the Caribbean we could stand out among the other business. After playing around further we decided that a Caribbean theme may be off the table due to the nature of interior design.

We still wanted to explore grilling so started to look at the actual process of grilling. The steps of brushing marinade on the meat and then sealing the meat on the grill are things that are unique to grilling. We started to explore these processes as techniques for creating the logo. We used a large loose brush pen to make marks with ink. The brush pen gave textured effects that we all really liked. We then scanned in the mark and began to stylize them. We chose to reflect the recognisable lines of the grill by putting the lines in similar pattern, short and diagonal. The font we chose to go underneath the lines was a san serif thick type face. We wanted it to be sans because we wanted to be contemporary and clean, the heaviness was to counteract the weight of the lines. This idea was one that we liked although we thought it was a safe option.

We began to break down the target audience and what is popular among the age group. The trend that we began to notice was the resurgence of old traditional skills, among this was the popularity of lettering. The juxtaposition between the verb tickled and the image of a heavy solemn Cow make using a hand drawn font an ideal situation as it allowed us to mix both styles. We actually settled on a hand written font that looked less scriptural and more handwritten. I much preferred this use as I felt it appealed to a wider audience.

Our third option for the first of the meetings with CHS was inspired from a doodle that one of the group members had done. It was a single line drawing and we felt it was the most contemporary idea out of the three. Initially we tried to fit the logo and the mark together. This led to a design that had a large amount of lines and no feel structure, we therefor started to separate the mark from the logo and use them independently. One design, that we all really liked, which came out of the merging of logo and mark was one where we created the name of the restaurant in the shape of a cow. CHS really liked the contemporary illustration. Like us they felt that separating them from the logo might help create a more adult feel to the restaurant. They also were keen to inject some humour, this was something we hadn’t really thought about.

Humour was something that we hadn’t really considered until they mentioned it. We then began to think about how we add humour. To do this we began thinking about what we find funny, Fred and I are big lovers of puns. The amount of food on the menu gave us a good starting point; it allowed us to create individual branding elements that could still be part of a set. The puns were a really successful part of our branding; they set the tone for the restaurant. The tone, funny but more a smirk/ inside joke than ‘on the floor’ was something we thought worked well on the door drop and website and so we were keen to put in our menu. Putting it on our menu was more difficult as we had to make sure the information was really clear. As our menu fitted on one side we had a large amount of space on the rear. This space was empty space that we had decided to not put any information so we decided to therefore use it for the puns.

We noticed that when people were seated and reading a menu they rarely looked at the back of their own menu, they were either reading the menu or it was down on the table. What we did notice however, was that people did see the back of other people’s menus. Whether that be the person they were eating with or other in the restaurant. Using this information we therefore started to play around with putting text on the back. We wanted to almost create a silent conversation with the menus. We chose to write puns that focused on ordering food.

When we started to design the correx we wanted to use the puns again. The correx was placed on the road and would be seen by people in cars, when designing it we decided that we wanted something with very little text on it. The puns were easy to transport onto the correx however we wanted to shake it up and move it away from phrases and instead we looked at songs. We chose to pick a memorable song ‘don’t go breaking my heart’ and change breaking to bacon. When we showed it people they agreed that the song was really catchy and something that stuck in their head all day.

Overall I was happy with most of the outcomes of The Tickled Cow, the menu was not completely to my taste. I really liked the puns on the back and the structure of the food however the chubby hand written text was not something I would not ordinarily do. It was great to work with illustrators and it created a logo that was much more hand drawn than I’m used to. Equally the project really helped me explore colour within branding. One of the team members loves bright colours and so it was great to see how she used colours successfully and how it could be adapted to be an asset. The feedback from the project from CHS was really good, they really liked the puns, especially those on the back of the menu. It was great to know that we were on the right track and that it was inventive and unique.

Evaluation of D&AD

From the given selection of D&AD briefs I chose to work on the Pearson Brief. The brief, to create an educational tool or service for education in 2027, sounded really interesting and a good challenge to work on. The openness and problem solving aspect is something that I really like as I feel that idea generation is where my strength lies rather than in illustration or in aesthetics. Working in schools was also a major draw for me as it meant that I had a lot of people to talk to as well as experience. The scope of the project was a little daunting as there was no starting point or area to explore. They did mention about technology and it’s use within education so this did give me the medium of the outcome.

The obvious thing to look into initially was the predictions for education for 2027, education is predictably unpredictable, it is a focus point for each political party and so it often a reflection of the elected party and so predictions about education can only be based on technological advancements. Figures however, like the amount of additional school children and universities point towards a huge increase in the amount of students and the scale of teaching. As well as researching predictions I began to ask colleagues about what issues they and their students faced within education; there was a range of ages from a 23 year old NQT, a 26 year old who had been in the profession for two years as well as, a number of people who have had a career in teaching, ranging from 30s to 70s. This research became a starting point of things to look into. Most notably mentioned was the; the support for teaching within education, personalised learning for students aimed at different learning styles, the lack of creativity, and the commercialism of education caused by data driven policy. The lack of support for teachers was something that initially caught my eye and I began looking into how the expansion of education by 2027 would affect teaching staff. Current figures show that although the amount of students is increasing the amount of teachers joining and staying in the profession is actually dropping. Currently is has an unnoticeable but as the amount of students expanded it is something that will definitely become a problem.

It is estimated that by 2027 we will need an additional 30,000 teaching in compulsory education alone in order to cope with an additional million children, currently however there are xyz amount of teacher leaving each year and figures estimate that this will only increase. In relation to NQT data shows that xyz of xyz will leave with three years, it’s here therefor that I initially wanted to focus. Upon further research it became clear there was little out there for teacher by way of personal support, sites like sprinkle – aimed at primary school teachers – offer resources but nothing else.

From my information research I began looking into websites and design research. Pearson already offer a number of website aimed at children, most noticeable Bug Club, a reading website for primary school children, in terms of feasibility it showed that a website would fit in with the branding. The Pearson identity colours of blue and green exhume calm and so this really fitted in with my ideas of a website too. When looking at websites I knew that I wanted each web page to fit onto a single browser, they would create more of an app than a page. The increased use of mobiles and tablets to view websites also presented to me that the website would have to work on both a regular desktop screen as well as the smaller pages. The portal for the MyAub app provided a lot of inspiration as well as the theme that window 10 uses. By having a homepage which encapsulates each available page into a box the both designs help create the illusion of a base application rather than a webpage. This was something I definitely wanted to experiment with. I didn’t want the page have to many clicks however, and research has shown that having to do more than three click will put of viewer, MS Windows’ ‘live apps’ therefore really took my attention as it allowed the viewer to preview and interact with the separate pages.

What I created was a site which I named PaperClip. The website a support network for teaching, offering a single site where quality resources, professional development events, a forum, updated relevant news, and links to mental health sites can all be found. The name came from the idea of group all the necessary pages are grouped together in one document. The humble paperclip also reflected the way a lot of the teachers felt, stretched and trying to hold everything together. The font for the logo was formed from the unfolding of a paperclip. The type is san serif and features all the curves of an unfolded paperclip. I wanted the website to be very serene and calm, I therefore kept it really simple, just using a limited palette as well as keeping text to a minimum The colour schemes, of blue, grey and white, also reflected the relaxing nature of the website. The paperclip icon was placed as an extra within the website, with the font taking up the top 6th of the screen. I never wanted it to be specifically associated with the site.

In my crit Rich suggested that the concept didn’t look far enough into the future and didn’t fully make use of all the technology that could exist in the future. He argued that websites were becoming dated and people would be unlikely to use it in the way I had. This was a bit of a ‘spanner in the works’ and halted the whole project as I was a bit lost on where to go.

After the crit, and after the Christmas beak I had a tutorial with Laura. The tutorial was very much about starting again with the idea. I looked back over my initial research, seeing if there was something that may fit Rich’s vision more. The amount of students in education in 2027 and the pressure that would put on class sizes was something I had briefly looked into and so I chose to pick this topic back up to explore. In order to start afresh I looked at a different age group, drawing on my personal experience I chose to pick the university students. The university culture has always had strong connotations with lectures and so, there were natural links to the effects that an expansion of class sizes would have on lectures.

Lecture theatres and the formalities of lectures have not changed much since education began. Although they have picked up technologies like microphone, smart projectors and remotes the actual room still look recognisably the same. This therefor seemed like a good place to experiment with. One point that a tutor made was the difficulty that lecture pose, both to staff and to students. From the point of the lecturers teaching a hall of 100 can be difficult as there as there is no room for personalisation. The students often have a varied passion for the topic and it can be off putting to lecture when students visibly don’t want to be there. From the student’s point of view the method of copying down notes from a slide whilst also taking notes from a speaker can pose a challenge, it also is not a true reflection of how all people will learn. Whilst I was in secondary school we would have lectures and classes in a variety of different spaces, ranging from an onsite theatre with comfy seats and, state of the art sound system as well as huge projection screen, to an outdoor amphitheatre which we used in the summer. Lectures in unexpected spaces then became an idea. This would be university lectures in cinemas, on the beach, in woods and parks, however I began to think about how popular these really would be, there are issues with students not turning up to lectures ordinarily and so I had to ask myself would be willing to travel to other locations. In response to these issues with attendance I started to look at how this could be overcome. My initial idea the ability to watch your lectures on your laptop/tablet, in the past I have had teachers offer online Skype calls the morning before exams or in half terms. These are really successful and made me think about whether it would work on a regular university platform. Remembering how the brief talks about the international unity that technology presence I started to think about expanding the platform. Initially I thought about within universities, many universities offer the abilities for their students to attend lectures from across the university however students often aren’t aware when these are on or can’t get away. I felt that it the concept could work across a university then it could be expanded to global collaborations. I loved the idea that a student could attend a lecture in Hong Kong from their bed in London. Being able to view infinite lectures from across the globe means that students can really get passionate about a topic, and have equal education opportunities. The data could also be fed back to the universities and used to shape course modules.

My outcome to this concept was a website called Unified. Unified, standing for universities unified, presented a partnership between universities, allow their students to access lectures from across educators. The website acts as an archive, sorted by topic, university, date, and lecturer a student can such through all recorded lectures. The online lectures could become an addition to standard lectures or become a staple method of delivery; its use would be down the educator. When designing the branding I chose to not use the Pearson blue branding. Instead I chose a bright red. The bright red is a lot more energetic and strong, it offers a confidence that I felt that the blue lacked. The supporting dark grey offers stability and professionalism, backing up the authority of the site. Equally I felt that by putting the logo in a thick san serif created a brand that was confident. I created two main versions for the website, a standard desktop size and a mobile sized one, this was to reflect the ways I felt students would watch the videos.

The crit presentation was a lot more successful than that of the previous one, Rich and Laura both like the concept although they questioned about copyright and the effect it would have on lecturers. I started to look into the Ted Talks, a website which shows factual talks. The site would only be accessible through a university account and even then it would be made up of university who had agreed. Realistically no student would share the videos outside of a university context and universities would also benefit from the both the data and, it’s students being passionate and knowledgeable – which ultimately would result in better essays and high grades.

I really liked the project, if I had more time I would have like to have worked more intensively on the branding as it was a bit rushed. Creating an advertising campaign would also be high up on the things to do, both posters and a video aimed at universities. The websites were a bit rushed and there were a few issues with the site map…or lack of it. If I did it again I would think more about a landing page and sibling pages as the site was slightly too simple. If I was to enter this into D&AD I would like to show it in the form of a video. I think by showing it in motion the audience would get a better feel of how it is meant to look, and digital aspects of the concept really lend themselves to a animated presentation.
