Beecham House - Episode 3
At what point in a TV show do you stop critiquing and just say, you know what, I know a team of 6-7 people on the internet who could have written this better? At this point, it wouldn’t even be fanfic, we would straight-up be writing the damn thing. 
@jomiddlemarch has summed up my thoughts exactly: I keep wanting it to be better than it is; other than the costumes/scenery, everything is Swiss cheese.
The Automaton - Where was John going to purchase this clockwork wonder from - and if the man is already in India, why has the Sultan not already heard of him if he's making pre-fab gold objects? (On a side note, this reminds me of the Peacock Clock at the Hermitage as well as Tipu's Tiger, both 18th century automatons. I believe Tipu's Tiger was actually built on the subcontinent, in Mysore.)
Oh no, Henrietta has found the kitchen. Mrs. Patmore would be horrified - and Henrietta is, too. (But, giving credit where due - Mrs. Patmore would have made the kitchen her first stop, and after nearly exchanging blows with Mool Chand would have found some way to make it work.)
Baadal seems to be fairly young to be in charge of such a large house and staff, something that's never hindered his ability to run things. What's his family story?
This conversation between Roshanara and Margaret is making me very angry that Roshanara isn't a bigger character on this show. "She seeks your influence to persuade me to marry a prince of her choice." Once more, I need more about who Murad Beg is and what kind of influence he has! Marriages in the 18th century are about the transfer of property and power, and certainly the Empress' cousin is a man of both, but why should the Empress need to persuade Roshanara - and why isn't the subject of her non-compliance more of a plot point?
"How is it, Miss Osbourne, that you are not married?" Well, ma'am, I come from a genteel but poorly off family in Devon,  my brother squandered what little fortune he had in India and ran away, leaving me penniless. I, too, have been subject to the poor decisions men make on our behalf - a lesson for any young lady to take to heart, if she can.
AhHA! Samuel Parker is NOT what he appears.
Daniel as a character is getting...kind of interesting. Like his brother, he too seems to be more receptive to what India has to offer - he's often seen wearing the soft native pay-jama rather than breeches, and he's receiving massage treatment from the house hakim for his shoulder. He speaks Hindustani. He's already told his mother off for not bothering to learn everyone's name - but he's also toying with Chanchal's affections in a way that everyone but her can see.
Hot take: If Henrietta Beecham really is addicted to opium, we should have had an awful withdrawal scene, or at least several days where she is clearly suffering for lack of the drug, which then propels Violet to go brave the bazaar (in native dress, no less!) to get her some.
"You did not know what John's circumstances were when you brought me here." I feel like it would almost be funnier if Henrietta had brought Violet to marry Daniel - the brother who's not doing as well as John - and then over the course of the show she started throwing herself at John instead.
Violet seems to be increasingly desperate about this match with John. It seems to me a woman like that must not have very much going on at home in the way of options, which is odd, considering she just name-dropped her father's shipping company, which means she should be well off. Father's shipping company doing poorly? Family history of madness? Previous disgraceful behavior herself? Discuss.
I want Chandrika to break down and tell Henrietta Beecham that India is no stranger to Christianity and that St Didymus himself brought it there, but I think she's from the north and that's down in the Malabar coast. Ah, well.
With Gopal's death, we also *just* found out that Maya is his sister. This feels like a pretty serious storytelling oversight. What brought both of these people into John's employ? Do they both have the same opinion of him? I feel like Gopal, as his valet/bodyservant, might have had a different take than Maya. (Certainly we see that Ram Dal has some opinions. I want to hear more from him.)
Okay, so Castillion has a streak of 'going native' in him, too. Interesting. (Beecham/Castillion wrestling match in future episode, anyone? Anyone?)
I love the Margaret/John dynamic. I really do. I want it to work. I also want it to have some backbone, not this on-again-off-again-what are we anyway nonsense, because they’re friends, but also...more than friends?
Violet's drama-riddled entrance back into Beecham House is predictably hilarious (especially the victorious look she exchanges with Chandrika) but a) no one makes any remarks about her wearing a sari (green is a great look on her, btw) and b) the opium didn't break?
Can John and Daniel dress like Mughal princes more often? This is a good look.
Ram Lal! I love this guy!
Why are Daniel and Captain Parker in their shirtsleeves before the Emperor? This is all very odd from an 18th century men's manners perspective.

Tabla
The tabla is a type of musical instrument that includes two instruments. It is used in traditional Indian music and folk music. It has been widely used in the classical music of Hindustani music since the eighteenth century.
Creation--
Although the history of Tabla is not clear, there are many ideas. One of the two main ideas is that Tabla came to the Indian subcontinent by Muslim and Mughal invaders. But the idea of ​​Tabla's Indian affiliation comes from the Bhaje cave.
Structure--
The relatively small baja consisting of two tabla baja is called daya, dahina, siddha or chatu and the big baja is called baya, dughi or dham. The dye is mainly made of small wood, while the bayan is made of a mixture of metals such as nickel, copper and bronze. The upper part of each bazaar is made of leather, the middle part of which is called Sahi. This multi-layered part is made by mixing rice or wheat flour with different types of black. To keep the tablecloth in place while playing the instrument, it is used to keep the plant tissue and flexible metal wire wrapped in cloth. The upper part of each bazaar is made of leather, the middle part of which is called Sahi. To give stability to the tabla during playing, it is placed on the underside of the plant tissue wrapped around the edges and the flexible wire. This is called chutta or guddi.

*Birth name : Shankardas Kesarilal* *Born : 30 August 1923* *Rawalpindi, Punjab, British India (now in Pakistan)* *Died : 14 December 1966 (aged 43)* *Occupation : Lyricist* *Years active : 1949-1966* Shankardas Kesarilal (August 30, 1923 -- December 14, 1966), popularly known by his pen name Shailendra, was a popular Indian Hindi lyricist. Noted for his association with the filmmaker Raj Kapoor and the composers Shankar-Jaikishan, he wrote lyrics for several successful Hindi film songs in the 1950s and the 1960s. Shailendra hailed from Ara district of Bihar and the film "Teesri Kasam" was shot in the state as well. *CAREER AS A LYRICIST :* Shailendra started his career as a welder with Indian Railways. His job brought him to Mumbai (then Bombay) in 1947. He started writing poetry during these days.

The filmmaker Raj Kapoor noticed Shailendra, when the latter was reading out his poem Jalta hai Punjab at a mushaira (poetic symposium).[2] Kapoor offered to buy poems written by Shailendra and use them for his movie Aag (1948). Shailendra, a member of the left wing IPTA, was wary of mainstream Indian cinema and refused. However, after his wife became pregnant, Shailendra himself approached Raj Kapoor in need of money. At this time, Raj Kapoor was filming Barsaat (1949), and two of the film songs had not been written yet. For INR 500, Shailendra wrote these two songs: Patli kamar hai and Barsaat mein. The music for Barsaat was composed by Shankar-Jaikishan. The team of Raj Kapoor, Shailendra and Shankar-Jaikishan went on to produce many other hit songs. The song "Awara Hoon" from the 1951 film Awaara, written by Shailendra, became the most appreciated Hindustani film song outside India at the time. In the days when composers would recommend lyricists to producers, Shankar-Jaikishan once promised Shailendra that they would recommend him around, but didn't keep their promise. Shailendra sent them a note with the lines, Chhoti Si Yeh Duniya, Pehchaane Raaste Hain. Kahin To Miloge, Phir Poochhenge Haal ("The world is small, the roads are known. We'll meet sometime, and ask 'How do you do?'"). Shankar-Jaikishan realized what the message meant and having said sorry, turned the lines into a popular song. The song was featured in the film Rangoli (1962), for which the producer Rajendra Singh Bedi wanted to sign up Majrooh Sultanpuri as the lyricst. However, Shankar-Jaikishen insisted on Shailendra and the producer had to oblige. Apart from Shankar-Jaikishan, Shailendra also shared a rapport with composers such as Salil Chowdhary (Madhumati), Sachin Dev Burman (Guide, Bandini, Kala Bazar), and Ravi Shankar (Anuradha). Apart from Raj Kapoor, he shared a rapport with filmmakers such as Bimal Roy (Do Bigha Zameen, Madhumati, Bandini) and Dev Anand (Guide and Kala Bazar). *Last years* In the mid-1960s, Shailendra invested heavily in the production of the movie Teesri Kasam (1966), which won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film. Preface: Why this Little Book
“About ten years ago the idea of writing a little cookbook had its birth. We were in Almora that summer. Almora is a station far up in the Himalayas, a clean little bazaar nestles at the foot of enclosing mountains. Dotting the deodar-covered slopes of these mountains are the picturesque bungalows of the European residents, while towering above and over all are the glistening peaks of the eternal snows.
“We love to think of this particular summer, for Lilavate Singh was with us. The thought of her always brings help and inspiration.
“One day she prepared for the crowd of us a tiffin of delicious Hindustani food. That afternoon while we were sitting under the shade and fragrance of the deodar trees, we praised the tiffin. Before we knew it we were planning a cookbook. It was to be a joint affair of Hindustani and English dishes, and Miss Singh was to be responsible for the Hindustani part of it. Our enthusiasm grew. For three or four days we talked of nothing else. We experimented, we planned; we dreamed, we wrote. But alas! other things soon thrust themselves upon us, and our unfinished cook book was pigeon-holed for years and years. And it is not now what it would have been if finished then.

Some of them she might not recognize, for they have become quite Americanized, but they are hers nevertheless, and I hope that you will not only try them and enjoy them, but that they will help you to solve some of the problems of living and giving which are confronting us all these days.”

Remembering legendary poet & lyricist Shailendra, on his 51st death today.
There was one poet in the golden era of Hindi cinema who remained a quintessential lyricist all throughout, who used almost all his literary genius for writing great songs which were poems in themselves and he was second to none. His name was Shankardas Kesarilal Shailendra, for his countless admirers he was simply- Shailendra!
While the constant composition of songs based on the fragile conundrums of love reduced most lyricists to retail merchants of words, Shailendra’s songs always dazzled with their lyrical luster. In more than 170 films, he wrote warm souled poetry. Like the straight-from-the-heart `Aaja re pardesi", "main toh kab se khadi is paar’, Shailendra’s songs were in simple, yet extremely effective Hindustani.
Barring Naushad and O.P.Nayyar, Shailendra worked with almost all the leading composers of the era. As with Shankar Jaikishan, he also had a special rapport with Sachin Dev Burman for whom he penned such wonderful songs like O jaanewale ho sake to lautke aana (Bandini), Na main dhan chahoon, na ratan chahoon (Kaala bazaar) and Aaj phir jeene ki tamanna hai (Guide). But then he wrote beautiful lyrics for every composer, that's why we got gems like Toote huye khwabone in Salil Chowdhury's Madhumati, Haaye re woh din kyun na aaye in Pandit Ravishankar's Anuradha and Kuchh aur zamana kaheta hai in Anil Biswas's Chhoti chhoti baatein.
His songs with their rich human values will keep his memories lingering on. Maybe that's what he meant when he wrote these lines in Anari:
Rishta dil se dil ke aitbaar ka, Zinda hain hum hi se naam pyaar ka Ke marke bhi kisi ko yaad aayenge Kisi ke aansuon mein muskurayenge Kahega phool har kali se baar baar Jeena isi ka naam hai!

Remembering legendary poet & lyricist Shailendra, on his 94th birth anniversary today.
There was one poet in the golden era of hindi cinema who remained a quintessential lyricist all throughout, who used almost all his literary genius for writing great songs which were poems in themselves and he was second to none. His name was Shankardas Kesarilal Shailendra, for his countless admirers he was simply- Shailendra!
While the constant composition of songs based on the fragile conundrums of love reduced most lyricists to retail merchants of words, Shailendra’s songs always dazzled with their lyrical lustre. In more than 170 films, he wrote warm souled poetry. Like the straight-from-the-heart `Aaja re pardesi", "main toh kab se khadi is paar’, Shailendra’s songs were in simple, yet extremely effective Hindustani.
Barring Naushad and O.P.Nayyar, Shailendra worked with almost all the leading composers of the era. As with Shankar Jaikishan, he also had a special rapport with Sachin Dev Burman for whom he penned such wonderful songs like O jaanewale ho sake to lautke aana (Bandini), Na main dhan chahoon, na ratan chahoon (Kaala bazaar) and Aaj phir jeene ki tamanna hai (Guide). But then he wrote beautiful lyrics for every composer, that's why we got gems like Toote huye khwabone in Salil Chowdhury's Madhumati, Haaye re woh din kyun na aaye in Pandit Ravishankar's Anuradha and Kuchh aur zamana kaheta hai in Anil Biswas's Chhoti chhoti baatein.
His songs with their rich human values will keep his memories lingering on. Maybe that's what he meant when he wrote these lines in Anari:
Rishta dil se dil ke aitbaar ka, Zinda hain hum hi se naam pyaar ka Ke marke bhi kisi ko yaad aayenge Kisi ke aansuon mein muskurayenge Kahega phool har kali se baar baar Jeena isi ka naam hai!
