How International Investors Shape the Design and Amenities of Luxury Properties in Dubai
Dubai’s luxury real estate market has emerged as a global hub for investors seeking not only opulence and exclusivity but also substantial returns on their investments. The influx of international buyers into the city has profoundly influenced the design and amenities of luxury properties in Dubai, compelling developers to craft innovative, tailored offerings that meet the diverse expectations of this sophisticated clientele.
Branded Residences: A Status Symbol
One of the most significant trends in Dubai’s luxury real estate in Dubai is the proliferation of branded residences. These properties, often developed in collaboration with iconic global brands like Emaar Beachfront, Damac, and Sobha, represent the epitome of exclusivity and prestige. For international investors, owning a branded residence is more than just a luxury living experience; it is a statement of status. These properties have become magnets for high-net-worth individuals who value the cachet and recognition that comes with residing in such distinguished addresses. Real estate agents in Dubai are well aware of this trend and frequently showcase these properties as the pinnacle of luxury living.
Personalized Amenities and Services
The demand for personalized amenities is rising among international investors, who seek properties that cater to their unique lifestyles and preferences. In response, developers in Dubai are designing luxury properties that feature bespoke amenities, such as private elevators, dedicated concierge services, and in-house spas and fitness centers. These features go beyond mere convenience—they embody the essence of privacy, exclusivity, and a service level that is synonymous with luxury living. In the competitive market of properties in Dubai, such personalized offerings set the standard for what international buyers expect from their investments.
Sustainability and Eco-Friendly Design
As global awareness of environmental issues increases, sustainability has become a crucial factor for international investors in the luxury real estate market. Developers are now prioritizing eco-friendly design, incorporating green technologies such as energy-efficient systems and renewable energy sources into their projects. These sustainable properties not only appeal to environmentally conscious investors but also align with the growing demand for a greener lifestyle. In Dubai, where innovation meets luxury, real estate in Dubai is increasingly defined by its commitment to sustainability, making it an attractive proposition for forward-thinking international buyers.
Connectivity and Accessibility
For international investors, connectivity and accessibility are key considerations when choosing luxury properties. Dubai developers are acutely aware of this, and they are designing properties with proximity to global transportation hubs, metro stations, and major highways. This emphasis on connectivity ensures that investors can easily access their properties, whether for business or leisure. Properties in Dubai, therefore, are often located in strategic locations that offer seamless access to the city’s key areas, reinforcing Dubai’s appeal as a global city that combines luxury with practicality.
Lifestyle and Leisure Amenities
Dubai’s luxury real estate in Dubai market offers more than just stunning properties; it provides a complete lifestyle experience. International investors are drawn to developments that feature a range of leisure amenities, from private beaches and golf courses to high-end shopping and dining. Developers are responding to this demand by creating integrated communities that offer a holistic luxury lifestyle. These communities are designed to cater to every aspect of a resident’s life, making them highly attractive to international buyers who seek not just a home, but a comprehensive living experience that encapsulates the best of what Dubai has to offer.
As the luxury real estate market in Dubai continues to evolve, the preferences of international investors will remain a driving force in shaping the design and amenities of the city’s most prestigious properties. Developers who can anticipate and meet the diverse needs of this global clientele will thrive in Dubai’s dynamic and competitive market. By offering a blend of prestige, personalization, sustainability, connectivity, and lifestyle amenities, Dubai continues to stand out as a premier destination for international investors seeking not only a premium living experience but also a sound and lucrative investment.

Tower Grove Drive Residence Beautifully Combines Wood, Stone, and Glass
This modern hillside house is designed by architecture firm KAA Design located on a southern flank of the Santa Monica Mountains, California. This lovely home is surrounded by trees.
The house is a hillside retreat for the home owners which welcome guests with a circular driveway. One can see a stone wall and a central highlighted tree.
The architecture of the house is unique featuring overhangs and expansive roof lines. Its usage of sleek lines and geometric shapes turned out really beautiful.
The interior of the house features floor-to-ceiling windows which add an abundance of natural light. There is also a fireplace with a stone surround. Wooden elements inside the house adds a sense of warmth to the living room.
Between the living room and the kitchen is the dining area. It used colors that tie it with the living area. It has been defined by the use of a colored rug.
The kitchen has two islands and walls of wood cabinets which creates plenty of counter space and storage. Purple counter height chairs add some pops of color into the space.
When gets to the top of the stairs, there is a walkway that connects to the sleeping areas. But it is not just a simple landing from the stairs. It has a large wood bookshelf that lines one side of the walkway. The other side looks over the living room and dining area below it.
This is one of the bedrooms of the house which has a wood headboard with built-in bedside tables and opens shelving. Isn’t this a nice way to display some of your favorite items near your bed? Since there are two reading lamps on both sides, you can just grab a book and read before you doze off to sleep! Read Also: The Stone Walls of the North Bay Residence in Washington, USA
The house has a spacious bathroom with a freestanding bathtub that sits in front of the windows. But that’s not all. It also features a make-up vanity and a large two-person walk-in shower with a wood bench. You can literally spend long hours in a bathroom like this!
A wood and metal spiral staircase leads up to the upper floor of the home. You can get a good look of the stairs here as viewed from the sides and from the top. The pendant lights bring a nice industrial appeal to this area with a stone wall backdrop.
The main living area and the backyard are connected by wood framed doors. The outdoor area features a lawn, a wood deck and a swimming pool. All of these areas offer a good view of Los Angeles and the Pacific Ocean beyond it.
The pool lounge also use colors that are seen in the interior of the house. This way, everything is tied together in terms of color and appeal.
Another part of the outdoor space near the pool area with pink outdoor sofa and white wicker chairs. Isn’t it very nice to spend an afternoon here while reading a book?
The house also has other outdoor spaces like this one. It is a small garden which features an interesting sculpture.
The upper floor of the home provides access to a green roof where there’s a small deck set up with lounge chairs and a fire bowl. This part of the house overlooks the neighborhood. Who wouldn’t want a green roof deck like this?

20 of the world’s best boutique hotels with standalone rooms
As travel begins to become possible again, yet with social distancing still front of mind, heading to a hotel might feel less daunting for some if there is the option of standalone accommodation. From private villas to idyllic country cottages, these are the best places to go to feel a world away from everything (and everyone) else – limited contact with other guests, but with all the bells and whistles of boutique hotel luxury service and facilities.
Country House Havens
Rose Cottage at Dormy House Hotel, the Cotswolds – UK
A traditional Cotswold cottage with its own private courtyard and hot tub, Rose Cottage at 17th-century farmhouse Dormy House is the perfect countryside retreat for couples (and their well-behaved pooch!) An independent single storey cottage set in the rural grounds of the Farncombe Estate, Rose Cottage sleeps two guests in a King size bed beneath exposed timbers and fabulously floral interiors.
Treehouses, Hilly & Hideaway Huts at The Fish Hotel, the Cotswolds – UK
Also set within the 400-acre Farncombe Estate is The Fish Hotel, a village-style collection of houses, huts and hideaways made for laid-back luxury breaks. Nestled into the hillside of this back to nature bolthole are the most charming luxury cabins, complete with underfloor heating, en-suite bathrooms (some with free-standing bathtubs), and cosy lounge areas beside a wood burner.
If you want to push the boat out, Boaty McBoatface comes with its very own paddle boat for you to relax on whilst floating around your own private lake, or pop across to your private island complete with decking and comfortable seating.
For more of an arboreal retreat, enjoy the hotel’s woodland setting from up close (and up high!) in three Treehouse suites – wrapped around large Oak trees with two heated outdoor baths on a spacious decking area.
Private Villas at Domaine de Manville, Les Baux de Provence – France
Nestled in the valley beneath Les Baux, one of the loveliest hilltop medieval villages in France, Domaine de Manville sits in a vast 100-acre estate. Originally a working farm, it is now a stylish hotel surrounded by olive trees, scented wild herbs and lush green fields. All the rooms are beautifully decorated and have poolside views, including their nine luxury villas. From the three-bedroom Luxury and Prestige Villas which sleep up to seven people, to the four-bedroom Deluxe Villa which accommodates up to nine guests, each of the villas boasts spacious interiors which open out onto large private terraces.
Private Garden Villa at San Canzian Village & Hotel, Buje – Croatia
Perched up on the Croatian peninsula near Buje in the medieval village of Mužolini Donji, the two-storey villa at San Canzian Village & Hotel is surrounded by shady olive groves, its own private garden and outdoor pool, and the celebrated vineyards of San Canzian.
Elite Spring Villas, Anxi – China
A collection of Zen infused villas beside natural hot springs in China’s tea capital, Elite Spring Villas is an exclusive resort celebrating historic Chinese culture. Stroll along pathways between gently bubbling fountains to your private villa. Each offers a contemporary take on authentic Chinese design, with atmospheric touches such as calming sandalwood incense. Expect spacious living and sleeping areas, and luxury hot tubs in some villas.
ABBA Resorts Izu, Shizuoka – Japan
A serene forest dwelling in Japanese inn style, ABBA Resorts Izu is a spacious yet intimate retreat offering guests multiple private villa options, featuring open-air onsen baths, soothing water features, and tranquil gardens. Take a dip in your heated private pool with water bubbling up from the Ukiyama Hot Springs.
City Serenity
Casas del XVI, Santo Domingo – Dominican Republic
A city break might not be top of everyone’s list right now, but a trip to this collection of centuries-old houses guarantees culture without the crowds. Listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, the Ciudad Colonial is the historic centre of Santo Domingo. At its heart lies Casas del XVI comprising a number of thoughtfully renovated properties dating back to the 16th century. Maintaining the houses’ original architecture, each one is individually decorated to reflect the area’s historical and cultural significance. Butler service, a pool, outdoor dining and a library are available in selected properties.
Seaside Seclusion
Eaudesea Experience Rooms at Casa Angelina, Amalfi Coast – Italy
Set in old fishermen’s houses forged into the coastline, the Eaudesea Experience Rooms blend Casa Angelina’s chic all-white aesthetic with more rustic elements, including exposed natural rock for the ultimate lesson in laid-back luxury. Separate from the main hotel building, these rooms overlook La Gavitella Beach, where you’ll find a dedicated area for Casa Angelina guests.
Sea View Villa Annex at Villa Franca, Positano – Italy
With an enviable spot amid Positano’s old streets, yet moments from the shore, this hilltop retreat overlooks the beautiful Amalfi Coast. Once a private house, Villa Franca is still run by the same family who will make you feel instantly at home. Opt for the Junior Suite or the Master Room in the villa annex for a private terrace and the best views of Positano.
Luxury Apartments and Private Villas at Smiths Beach Resort, Yallingup – Australia
Set within a National Park, this environmentally-friendly and picturesque resort is a restful sanctuary providing the ultimate Australian beachside experience. Smiths Beach Resort’s beautifully furnished One Bedroom Apartments, Two and Three Bedroom Garden or Ocean View Villas and Three and Four Bedroom Beach Houses have large picture windows that frame views of the stunning natural surrounds, stretches of ocean and colourful sunsets.

From three, four, and five bedroom Casitas to the six bedroom Casa Bella Villa, the sophisticated look and feel of the interiors carries seamlessly over to the exclusive private beach club on Palmilla Beach.

This extraordinary ensemble of boutique villas overlooks the turquoise Aegean Sea and tranquil expanse of Elia Beach below. From its exclusive, hilltop position, surrounded by the wild, natural sun-caressed beauty of Mykonos, Panoptis Escape promises absolute serenity in every sense. Ranging from one to three bedroom villas with private pools, this island sanctuary also features an expansive Honeymoon Retreat complete with an 80-square metre outdoor area to fully soak up the sunshine.

With just a handful of artfully designed rooms and suites, all accessible externally and with private beachfront patios, this boutique resort is utterly exclusive – complete with a private stretch of sand at your disposal.
Tropical Island Hideaways
Pangkor Laut Resort, Lumut – Malaysia
On a secluded private island off the west coast of Malaysia lies Pangkor Laut Resort – picture tropical jungle, rocky outcrops and the beautiful beach of Emerald Bay. Choose from Sea, Beach, Spa, Hill or Garden Villas, each in their individually unique settings and many with outdoor bathtubs. Relax on your balcony and take in the stunning sea views with the high pitched calls of macaque monkeys in the background.
Mangala Resort & Spa, Kuantan – Malaysia

From the private villas built on stilts over the lake, to those beside lily-dotted wetlands, every inch of this resort brings guests closer to nature.
Vahine Island Resort & Spa, Tahaa – French Polynesia
Vahine Island Resort & Spa is a remote Polynesian hideaway on its own 23-acre private island with just nine beachfront and overwater bungalows hidden among coconut trees and facing a pristine blue lagoon. The most difficult choice you’ll need to make is: beachfront or overwater? To enjoy the lagoon’s abundant wildlife, there is an aquarium table in the water bungalows to watch and feed the tropical fish that swim in the water below. Beachfront bungalows have a lazy hammock on their spacious decks with fabulous views of the lagoon and nearby Bora Bora. Decisions, decisions…
Little Polynesian Resort, Rarotonga – Cook Islands
At the adults-only Little Polynesian Resort, traditional soul meets contemporary style beside a protected lagoon in Rarotonga. The exclusive bungalows and studios at this boutique escape have Polynesian craftsmanship at their core. Beachfront Bungalows are just steps from the sand, while Garden Studios are immersed in botanical beauty.

Six Senses Signs First Hotel in UK
Six Senses has signed its first hotel in London, England. The Six Senses London, scheduled to open in 2023, will be located in the iconic building that housed the former department store, Whiteleys. The hotel will open with 110 guest rooms and suites, starting from 355 square feet (33 square meters). There will also be 14 branded residences, with owners able to tap into all the privileges that come with a Six Senses home, including bespoke interior design, concierge service, dining, housekeeping and wellness programming.
Whiteleys takes its name from visionary entrepreneur, William Whiteley, who opened his first drapery shop in Westbourne Grove in 1863. A little over a decade later, the shop had grown to a department store described as an immense symposium of the arts and industries of the nation and of the world. Once a vibrant destination that formed the focus for the surrounding residential neighborhood, Whiteleys was then redeveloped in the 1980s into a shopping center with a cinema and bowling alley. It subsequently closed its doors in December 2018 as its popularity diminished. The redevelopment of Whiteleys is being headed by a Meyer Bergman-advised fund, with the preeminent residential real estate developer Finchatton as development manager. In collaboration with the British architectural firm, Foster + Partners, renowned for its eco credentials and responsible design approach, this historic landmark will become a sensitively restored mixed-use development. The original Grade II faade, central courtyard and dome will all be preserved, as will the majestic internal staircase (modeled on the La Scala opera house in Milan), which features as the centerpiece on the ground floor of the hotel. Inspired by the buildings origins, the interiors of Six Senses London are being designed by internationally celebrated AvroKO in conjunction with executive architects EPR, and combine nostalgic nods to classical detailing and art deco along with modern streamlining. Contemporary art from British artists will be showcased throughout the hotel. Six Senses London will feature a cozy lobby bar and lounge, an all-day dining restaurant with an open kitchen and seating area in the courtyard, a Six Senses Spa, a comprehensive fitness centre, indoor swimming pool, bar, and a relaxation room with vaulted ceilings. On the second floor, residents and members will access a new kind of social and wellness club. Away from the density and intensity of the city, this space will feature a central bar and lounge, coworking spaces, a restaurant and wellness rooms, and offer pioneering programming to encourage growth, reflection and reconnection. Chief Executive Officer, Six Senses Hotels Resorts Spas, Neil Jacobs, said, I feel nostalgic when talking about Whiteleys. I grew up in the neighborhood and my parents used to bring me here. It is a wonderful opportunity to pay homage to this heritage and bring our brand values to life in this part of town, while celebrating our first port of call for Six Senses in the UK. Here’s what real estate players heading to Art Basel need to know
UPDATED, Dec. 5, 10:35 a.m.: Real estate and art converge this week, as developers, brokerages and architects capitalize on the well-heeled crowd descending on Miami to boost the visibility of their luxury projects.
Brokerage firms are sponsoring art fairs, condo projects are hosting lavish parties and exhibits, architects and designers are holding book signings, and museums are offering art-studded VIP soirees during Art Basel Miami Beach and Art Week — all geared to lure the artsy set.
Christie’s International Real Estate, along with EWM Realty International, is a marquee sponsor of Art Miami and its sister event, CONTEXT Art Miami, for the eighth consecutive year. Christie’s and its affiliates will host an interactive booth at the main entrance of Art Miami, displaying luxury residential properties from around the world.
Art Miami’s works on display will include Peter Anton’s CHOCO TOWER, a 10-foot tall sculpture of five chocolates stacked on top of each other that weighs more than 1,000 pounds. Made from painted aluminum, the sculpture will be on display at Stuttgart-based Galerie von Braunbehrens’s booth, part of an edition of three works, each painted in different colors.
The developers of the Ritz-Carlton Residences, Sunny Isles Beach, which just topped off, will be the official sponsor of the 17th annual ArtNexus Party in Wynwood. Developed by Fortune International Group and Château Group, The Ritz-Carlton Residences will be hosting the VIP lounge during the party, with a scale model of the condo tower.
The event will also unveil Uruguayan artist Pablo Atchugarry sculpture for the exterior of the project’s Oceanside tower. Atchugarry will debut a sketch of his piece, and guests will celebrate the opening of his family gallery in Wynwood, the Atchugarry Art Center.
Acqualina Resort & Spa’s AQ Bar is hosting an event on Thursday, in partnership with Fine Art Mia. AQ bar will be adorned with a collection of original contemporary masterpieces by famous American artists Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Keith Haring and Jeff Koons and British contemporary artist Damien Hirst. Among them: Liz by Andy Warhol painted in 1964 and Alfred Hitchcock from 1983 and Damien Hirst’s Mickey in blue glitter from 2016.
Art Basel show partner Douglas Elliman is hosting a series of events, beginning with a property showcase in the Collectors Lounge of the art fair. Elliman is working with Artefacto, which is furnishing the New York brokerage’s new development gallery, and including a virtual reality presentation of new developments.
Elliman is also hosting a tour of “architecturally significant” new projects currently on the market in Miami Beach for Elliman and Knight Frank agents in town. On Thursday, the company is unveiling its fifth annual Elliman Magazine Art Issue at 1 Hotel & Homes South Beach.
Italian architect Antonio Citterio will be giving a talk at Design Miami on Wednesday with the home and design editor of Departures, discussing luxury architecture and design. Citterio is designing Arte, a 12-story, 16-unit condo building in Surfside being developed by Alex Sapir.
Arte is also placing an art installation through Sunday featuring a video by Sophia Hanover and Stuart Parr projected onto the building at 8995 Collins Avenue.
Cervera Real Estate is sponsoring Red Dot Miami and Spectrum Miami for the second year in a row. Cervera’s hosting “The Art of Living” collection at Red Dot Miami, beginning with a ribbon cutting ceremony on Wednesday and ending on Sunday at Mana Wynwood. The collection will showcase some of Cervera’s exclusive projects, including Aston Martin Residences Miami, Aria on the Bay and Elysee Miami.
Oppenheim Architecture’s Ilona Oppenheim and the Related Group’s Jorge Pérez on Tuesday evening will celebrate their new book “Island in the Light,” which features 35 artists and 30 writers celebrating contemporary Cuban art, music and literature.
TRA Publishing is launching the book at a private event at Two Park Grove, a luxury condo building developed by Pérez and David Martin’s Terra. Cuban musician Pavel Urkiza will compose original scores inspired by the book’s selection.
In Edgewater, Pérez is unveiling the Paraiso District, a group of condo towers the Related Group recently completed. Artists Santiago Parra, Omar Barquet and Pablo Atchugarry will be at the event on Friday morning. Pérez and his wife, Darlene, are also hosting an invitation-only private breakfast and stroll through their art collection at his home in Coconut Grove this week.
The Bass Museum in Miami Beach is hosting a VIP reception Wednesday to celebrate the opening of The Haas Brothers: Ferngully during Miami Art Week. Also on view, Paola Pivi: Art with a view and Aaron Curry: Tune Yer Head.
In addition to hosting a number of offshoot art events and fairs in Wynwood and downtown Miami, real estate investor and developer Moishe Mana is having a birthday bash at his Wynwood complex on Tuesday. Mana and InList are hosting the party, starting at 9 p.m. and ending at 4 a.m. Lance Bass will MC the event, which is featuring performances by Cedric Gervais and others.
Nearby, broker and developer Tony Cho will have a pop-up experience at the Wynwood Gateway building called “Ignition.” The event, on Thursday evening, will feature artwork by Olivia Steele, Tyler Goldflower, J. Margulis and Dino Urpi in rooms of an on-site hotel, which will then be listed on Airbnb. The event will benefit the nonprofit Path of the Panther.
The nonprofit Berkowitz Contemporary Foundation is hosting a preview party for its new art-inspired building in Edgewater, where the foundation will showcase its art collection.
The project, designed by Rene Gonzalez Architects, will display Richard Serra’s “Passage of Time,” a 218-foot-long sculpture that will be installed in the courtyard. The 45,000-square-foot building was designed to incorporate an 80-foot-tall light installation by James Turrell’s “Aten Reign.” The building is slated to be completed in 2023.
Gonzalez also designed Sotheby’s (RED) Auction exhibition. Artist Theaster Gates and architect Sir David Adjaye are hosting an event Wednesday in the Moore Building in the Miami Design District, which will auction works of art by Jeff Koons, Pierre Jeanneret, Zaha Hadid and more, with proceeds benefiting the Global Fund to Fight AIDS and the Rebuild Foundation.
On Friday, Valli Art Gallery is hosting a private event in Miami Beach’s Star Island. Valli Art Gallery is collaborating with Techrin Hijazi of William Raveis Real Estate to showcase post-war and contemporary Italian art aboard a 140-foot luxury yacht docked at 44 Star Island Drive. The estate is on the market for $18.4 million. The event will be hosted by Italy’s Radio 105.
Swire Properties’ Brickell City Centre is hosting its annual art fair, free to the public, from Thursday through Sunday. Featured works were curated and produced by Anthony Spinello in partnership with Swire Properties. Artists include Hank Willis Thomas, Emily Shur and Genevieve Gaignard.
CASACOR Miami is also being held at Brickell City Centre for the second straight year. The visual design exhibition, a partnership between Swire Properties and COSENTINO CASACO, features architecture, interior and landscaping design exhibits.
Miami is getting a rare look inside the world of Banksy at the planned site of the Magic City Innovation District. The Little Haiti site just opened an exhibit with over 80 original works by the artist. The Art of Banksy is curated by Steve Lazarides, Banksy’s former business partner, and displays the world’s largest collection of the artist’s works, including the “Balloon Girl” and the “Flag Wall.”
Lexus held a kickoff cocktail for Design Miami at Le Sirenuse at Fort Partner’s Four Seasons Residences at The Surf Club on Monday, unveiling its luxury crossover vehicle, LF-1 Limitless, designed by Japanese architect Socha Ichikawa. Lexus is the official automotive partner of Design Miami.
Last week, even before Art Basel, some developers began celebrating art and design. Jade Signature in Sunny Isles Beach’s developers Edgardo and Cristina Defortuna held a book signing of Pierre Yves Rochon’s Interior Splendor. Rochon designed the common areas of Jade Signature, including the lobby, library, and Club Room, and also designed the interiors of London’s Savoy, the Four Seasons George V in Paris and the Waldorf Astoria, now under construction in New York.
An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated that the Brickell City Centre art fair only featured women artists. It’s open to all genders.

Where 8 Famous Artists Loved to Go on Vacation
La maison-musée Salvador Dali, Spain. Photo by Jean-Pierre Dalbéra via Flickr.
Science has spoken: Vacations are good for creativity. Brain imaging reveals that relaxing and letting your mind wander actually triggers alpha waves in the brain, a vital ingredient for innovative thoughts. Positive emotions like joy and contentment—often sparked by a good vacation—foster outside-the-box thinking and inventiveness.
Artists are no exception to these rules. For the likes of Paul Klee and Georgia O’Keeffe, holiday getaways served as the catalyst for major breakthroughs in style and subject. For Pablo Picasso and Berthe Morisot, they were periods of extreme productivity.
But where, you might wonder, did they actually go? Overwhelmingly, to the beach—along the Côte d’Azur, the Costa Brava, Cape Cod, and even Hawaii. From Massachusetts to Tunisia, here are the favorite vacation spots that influenced eight famous artists.
Pablo Picasso
Juan-les-Pins, France

PabloPicasso first ventured to the French seaside town of Juan-les-Pins in the summer of 1920, accompanied by his then-wife, Olga. Over the following years, the Spanish painter continued to vacation along the Côte d’Azur (though he eventually traveled there with another lover, Marie-Thérèse Walter). This summer tradition was stalled by the start of World War II, however.
Picasso wouldn’t return until 1946, the year he left his most lasting mark on the region. For two months that fall, he took up residence with his new lover, Françoise Gilot, in the tiny village of Golfe-Juan. Their days were spent lounging on picturesque beaches; at night, Picasso retreated to a makeshift studio in the medieval Château Grimaldi in nearby Antibes. He worked at a furious pace, producing 23 paintings and 44 drawings in total—the entirety of which he donated to the château, making it the first museum dedicated to the artist.
Berthe Morisot
Fécamp, France
Berthe Morisot, Sur la Plage, 1873. Courtesy of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.
Each summer, the Impressionists flocked to northern France, where the likes of Claude Monet and Camille Pissarro captured the cliffs, beaches, and Gothic cathedrals dotting the region. Berthe Morisot was no exception. For her (and her sister Edna), the summer holiday was an excuse to trade Parisian social obligations for plein air painting. One year, they hiked through the Pyrenees; the next, they were lured by a fellow painter to set up shop in a village along the Oise River.
One of the family’s favorite vacation spots was Fécamp, a beach town in Normandy. Morisot memorialized the beach of Les Petites Dalles in an 1873 painting, capturing vacationing figures as they strolled along the boardwalk. The next summer at Fécamp would be a significant one for the painter’s personal life: Édouard Manet’s brother, Eugène, proposed to Morisot as the two painted side-by-side at a naval construction site.
Georgia O’Keeffe
Hawaii, United States

In 1938, the Hawaiian Pineapple Company (today known as Dole) offered GeorgiaO’Keeffe an all-expenses-paid trip to Hawaii. In return, she was asked to produce two paintings for use in an advertising campaign. Lured in part by the slick travel brochures she’d been sent, the artist eventually accepted the company’s invitation; she arrived in Honolulu on February 8, 1939. Hawaii introduced O’Keeffe to a host of new experiences: dining on raw fish, donning thonged sandals, strolling along black-sand beaches. By the end of her nine-week trip, she was thoroughly enchanted by the islands (if not by the pineapple she was supposed to be painting—the company was aghast to find she had returned to the U.S. with a number of canvases, none of which depicted that particular fruit).
“I have always intended to return,” O’Keeffe later wrote to her friend Ansel Adams. “I often think of that trip at Yosemite [with you] as one of the best things I have done—but Hawaii was another.” She would visit twice more: In 1959, she stayed in Honolulu en route to southeast Asia, and in 1982, at 94 years old, she returned to Häna.
Gustav Klimt
Lake Attersee, Austria
Gustav Klimt with his friends at the Attersee lake, 1907. Photo by Imagno/Getty Images.
Although Gustav Klimt is best known for his glimmering portraits of Viennese high society, his oeuvre also includes approximately 50 known landscapes. A vast majority of these (more than 45, in fact) were painted along Lake Attersee, his summer retreat for more than 15 years. “It is terrible, awful here in Vienna,” Klimt once complained to a friend. “Everything parched, hot, dreadful, all this work on top of it, the ‘bustle’—I long to be gone like never before.” So, in the tradition of sommerfrische—established in the 19th century by Habsburg emperors taking advantage of a newly constructed railway system—the artist traded the sweltering city for the lake-filled Austrian countryside.
There, he donned flowing, floor-length robes and spent his days trekking through the foothills or rowing on the lake. The locals dubbed him “Wood Goblin,” chuckling as he towed his painting supplies from one landscape to the next.
Salvador Dalí
Cadaqués, Spain

Salvador Dalí was born in Figueres, along Spain’s Costa Brava, and spent his childhood holidays in the nearby fishing village of Cadaqués. Some of his earliest paintings—landscapes in the style of the Impressionists—capture the olive groves, white-walled buildings, and glittering waters of the picturesque seaside town.
It was there, during a 1929 stay at his family’s vacation home, that the 25-year-old Dalí met Gala—the woman who would become his wife and lifelong love. The couple soon settled there permanently, purchasing a fisherman’s cottage slightly north of the town that boasted an idyllic view of the Mediterranean. The Surrealist adored the village for its isolated location and its quality of light; he dubbed it “the best place in the world.”
Helen Frankenthaler
Provincetown, Massachusetts, United States
Cape Cod National Seashore, 2014. Photo via Flickr.
Helen Frankenthaler first visited Provincetown in 1950, at age 21, studying for three weeks under Abstract Expressionist painter Hans Hofmann. When she returned a decade later, she herself was an established AbEx artist whose works had been acquired by the likes of the Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney. She was also married to fellow painter Robert Motherwell, who had suggested the trip to Cape Cod in the first place.
From 1960 to 1969, the couple decamped to Provincetown each summer, trading the bustle of New York City for the quiet of their beach-side studios. Frankenthaler loved to swim, usually twice a day: once in the morning, before settling in to paint around 9 a.m., and then after lunch. “I understand how enamored she would have been of Provincetown, being near like-minded people—and also its sheer physical beauty,” recalled Motherwell’s daughter Lise, who spent her childhood summers in Provincetown with the couple. “It must have fed her artistic imagination unbelievably.”
Edward Hopper
Truro, Cape Cod
Cape Cod Evening, 1939. Edward Hopper National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.
Edward Hopper owed his favorite vacation spot—and, perhaps, his career—to his wife, Josephine. A painter herself, she introduced her husband to Cape Cod in 1930. The couple rented homes there for a few years before Hopper decided to build a house in the quiet town of Truro. He adored the house and its light-filled studio overlooking the bay, spending almost half of his 84 summers there. In all, he painted more than 100 works of the Cape.
“In the early years he was prolific, he loved the Cape and the beautiful light, the beautiful vernacular architecture,” art historian Gail Levin said. “He doesn’t really paint many pictures of rolling sand dunes. He was attracted to the architecture.”
Paul Klee
Tunisia
Temple Gardens, 1920. Paul Klee The Metropolitan Museum of Art
One of the most storied episodes in Paul Klee’s young life occurred during a vacation to Tunisia in 1914. Accompanied by fellow painters August Macke and Louis Moilliet, he spent two weeks traveling across the country, capturing what he saw in sketches and vibrant watercolors. At times, Klee found the foreign landscapes utterly arresting; in St. Germain, he was captivated by the full moon that hung over the city on Easter Sunday. “The evening is deep inside me forever,” he wrote in his journals. “Many a blond, northern moon rise, like a muted reflection, will softly remind me.”
During a visit to the city of Kairouan, Klee experienced a major artistic breakthrough. Already assured in his skill as a draftsman, he suddenly felt as though he understood color, too. “Color possesses me. I don’t have to pursue it,” he famously wrote. “That is the meaning of this happy hour: Color and I are one. I am a painter.” Although he never returned to Tunisia, he continued to set down images from that trip for years to come.

Heat Map: Here are Miami Heat players’ South Florida real estate
From left: James Johnson, Erik Spoelstra, LeBron James and Chris Bosh (Credit: Getty Images)
After retiring from professional basketball, Miami Heat legend Dwayne Wade put his waterfront Miami Beach home on the market for $33 million last week.
The six-bedroom, 13,800-square-foot mansion at 5980 North Bay Road includes a wine room – likely with some bottles from his winery, D Wade Cellars — a game room, outdoor basketball court and a home theater.
Wade isn’t the only basketball player with an impressive pad in South Florida. Wade’s current and former teammates have also made a splash in real estate, buying luxury homes in Pinecrest, Coconut Grove and Miami Beach.
Below is a list of where current and former Miami Heat players bought or sold homes in South Florida.
LeBron James

After LeBron James depleted Miami Heat fans’ hopes of winning a championship and took his talents to Cleveland, he sold his mansion at 3590 Crystal View Court in Coconut Grove for $13.4 million in 2015.
The home has a 4,500-square-foot guest section with a lounge and game room, an infinity-edge pool, an outdoor kitchen and a concrete dock with space for two 60-foot yachts. The house also has a private theater, office and a wine cellar fit for a sommelier.
When he put the 12,178-square-foot home on the market in October 2014, James originally wanted $17 million, which was $8 million more than what he paid in 2010.
Chris Bosh

Former Miami Heat power forward Chris Bosh and Big 3 member still owns a home just down the street from Wade’s Miami Beach pad.
The ex-Heat star and his wife, Adrienne Williams Bosh, own a 12,400-square-foot estate at 6396 North Bay Road that they put on the market at the end of 2017 for $18 million.
Bosh paid $12.3 million for the seven-bedroom North Bay Road estate in 2010, a year after it was completed. The property includes an infinity-edge pool, boat dock, outdoor kitchen, gym and guesthouse.
James Johnson

The player who bears the nickname “Bloodsport” for his black belt in karate, bought an estate in Pinecrest for $5.2 million last year.
James Johnson bought the seven-bedroom, 7,700-square-foot home at 8955 Southwest 63rd Court in May 2018. The property initially hit the market in 2016 for $5.35 million, and again in November 2016 for nearly $5.3 million, according to Realtor.com. Johnson was previously renting the house.
The house features a home theater, pool and spa, and an outdoor kitchen.
Erik Spoelstra
Miami Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra flipped his Coconut Grove house, selling it at a slight loss in 2017.
In May 2016, Spoelstra paid $2.6 million for the five-bedroom home at 3720 Poinciana Avenue. He listed it in January 2017 for $2.7 million, hoping to make a profit, but sold it for $2.5 million in February 2017.
Built in 1937, the Coconut Grove home sits on a 32,706-square-foot lot with tropical landscaping and a canopy of oak trees. It was recently renovated and features high-end appliances, vaulted wood ceilings, a gourmet kitchen, pool, and a cottage suite with its own kitchen.
Anfernee “Penny” Hardaway
“Lil’ Penny,” who played briefly with the Miami Heat before retiring in 2007, sold his Pinecrest mansion for $2.6 million.
Anfernee “Penny” Hardaway initially listed the 8,639-square-foot home at 5940 Southwest 108th Street for $3.8 million in 2017. The home has six bedrooms, seven-and-a-half bathrooms and features a basketball court, home theater, gym, swimming pool and six-car garage.
Hardaway is now the head basketball coach at the University of Memphis.
Hassan Whiteside
Right after signing a four-year, $98 million contract, Heat center Hassan Whiteside bought a new Miami Beach home for $7.3 million in 2016 . Whiteside’s house at 528 Lakeview Court spans 5,406 square feet on 17,676-square-foot property.
Built in 2014, the home features an open floor plan with a gourmet kitchen, pool, bar, summer kitchen, cabana, a guest house with a private entrance, staff quarters, and a large dock.
This summer, Whiteside was traded to the Portland Trail Blazers.
Dion Waiters
Despite holding the nickname “Waiters Island,” Dion Waiters chose to buy a non-waterfront mansion in Pinecrest in 2017.
Waiters paid $7.4 million for the mansion at 5745 Southwest 94th Street, property records show. It marked the priciest sale in Pinecrest in 2017.
The custom-built 17,700-square-foot house has nine bedrooms and 10-and-a-half bathrooms. It features a Balinese architectural style and a 20-foot-high ceilings, three terraces and a six-car, two-sided garage.
Mike Miller
Mike Miller was always known for his outside shooting, which could explain why he bought a house away from Miami.
Miller sold his Pompano Beach mansion at 2308 Bay Drive for $5.24 million in 2016. The 9,717-square-foot, three-story home is located in the posh Hillsboro Shores neighborhood of Pompano Beach. Through its large floor-to-ceiling windows, the home overlooks a wide inlet that connects the ocean to Florida’s Intracoastal Waterway.
Ray Allen
Right after Ray Allen’s Heat career ended, he laid down roots in Miami and bought a 10-bedroom Coral Gables home for $11 million. Billionaire medical entrepreneur Miguel Fernandez sold the mansion at 5 Tahiti Beach Island Road to a trust tied to Allen in 2014.
The more than 37,000-square-foot property includes a private beach. Other features include a library, elevator, gym, sauna and spa bath. Property records show the trust tied to Allen still owns the property. Allen retired from the NBA in November 2016 and was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2018.
Pat Riley
Miami Heat President Pat Riley and his wife, Christine, paid $8.1 million for unit 507 in the south tower of the luxury condo-hotel Four Seasons Residences at the Surf Club in Surfside earlier this year, records show.
The unit has four bedrooms and five-and-a-half bathrooms.
Fort Partners completed the project in 2017. It includes 150 condo units, a 72-room hotel, a Le Sirenuse restaurant and a Thomas Keller restaurant.

Rochon designed the common areas of Jade Signature, including the lobby, library, and Club Room, and also designed the interiors of London’s Savoy, the Four Seasons George V in Paris and the Waldorf Astoria, now under construction in New York.
