Widely considered one of the world’s great public art projects, The Bay Lights’ current system of LEDs is failing at a rate faster than can be repaired. They must be replaced with a new system that is custom engineered to perform in the harsh environmental conditions of San Francisco Bay. On March 5th, on the 10th anniversary of its initial Grand Lighting, the artwork will go dark. 

In total, $11M is needed for their return. We are raising ten $1M gifts from major philanthropists. This crowdfunding campaign seeks to raise $1M in smaller gifts, allowing everyone to participate. 

The good news: with your help, The Bay Lights by artist Leo Villareal will return more magically than ever. The number of programmable LEDs will double to nearly 50,000, making the artwork visible to communities around the Bay. And for the first time, we seek to have the lights be safely visible to drivers on the Bay Bridge, creating a world-class nighttime public art portal into San Francisco.

The San Francisco-based art nonprofit Illuminate is leading this effort. Please join us in helping return this public art masterpiece. Your gift of any size will help. We will do this collectively, one dollar, one hundred dollars, or $1M at a time.

It's still dark when his alarm goes off. You lay on your bed with one of his heavy arms locking your back to his chest; the cool press of his plastron through your sleep shirt -his old, way oversized tee- a comforting one.

The shrill beeping of the alarm, on the other hand, is the opposite of comforting. It's your reminder that he's not yours. Not really. He belongs to the night - a phantom sweeping over the heads of hundreds of sleeping people that will never know the capable hands that safeguard their lives.

It's nothing new, though. You knew from the start that he belongs to the icy touch of Nyx more than he will ever belong to you.

Belonging...

The very thing that keeps him from you:

The inability to belong that was cast upon him by the same people he's sworn to protect. It's a cruel irony that those he's saved countless times are the very ones that are the first to yell "freak" and "monster" at the sight of him.

It's shifting behind you that forces you from your thoughts. Just as fast as the alarm sounded, he shuts it off. The movement sets you in motion. Rolling over, you're met with tired eyes, awake way too early; they soften when they meet your own. A sickeningly sweet look that makes you want to melt into him like some sick experiment gone wrong.

"G'morning," His voice is gruff in the silent, barely-morning air.

"5 more minutes?" you plead. The first rays of light no doubt peaking over the horizon, taunting you with how little time you have left.

Leo stumbles into your room with his head bowed. His eyes are haunted and wide, his movements oddly stilted.

Something is wrong.

As far as you know, all the boys were supposed to do tonight was help the NYPD bust into a Purple Dragon storage house. You don't know what could possibly have him acting so... off. You don't see any injuries. If one of his brothers was hurt, he would be with them, not with you. If the storage house was a bust, he would be complaining about wasted time and energy, so that can't be it, either.

You want to ask. But at the same time, you really, really don't.

You watch him slowly shed his armor and gear with shaky hands. As soon as he's done, you reach for him. He pauses, studying you for a long moment before crawling into bed and pulling you close. You can feel him trembling, his fingers clutching at the fabric of your shirt like a lifeline.

"Can I stay with you tonight?"

The sound of his voice, small and pleading, makes your throat tight. He should never sound like that. Never.

"Of course," you whisper. "Always. You don't even have to ask, you know that."

He doesn't reply. You try to soothe him a bit, to get him to relax. Swiping gentle hands over his muscles. Scratching little symbols over his shell. Pressing kisses onto scale and keratin. It still feels as though he might shake apart in your arms, but he doesn't ask you to stop. You like to think it's helping. At least a little.

"I love you," he chokes out. He sounds... desperate. Afraid. "I love you so much."

"I love you, too, Leo."

His arms tighten around you again. "You're being careful, right? When- when I'm not there to keep an eye on you?"

"Yes, love, I'm being careful. I'm being safe. I promise."

"...Okay."

You try to stay awake, but the pull of sleep is too strong. You can feel it dragging you under, and the last thing you register before you slip away is Leo's voice.

"Please. Please."

You don't know what he's asking for.

💙 He wakes up slowly.

This is a surprise. Normally there is sleeping and then there is awakening, nothing in between. He lingers in the middle, confused but also… content.

It feels like meditating, he thinks, and without thought Leo’s breath slips into that familiar pattern. He allows his awareness to spread out.

Almost immediately he finds you. You are sprawled across his plastron, one arm flung across his waist and the other under your head over his heart. The softest snores are coming out of your mouth.

He has to remind himself to breathe, to slip back into his meditative state. It is harder than he thinks it should be.

At one point that had been a very sore subject for him, the way you disturbed his calm without even thinking about it. Now, though. Now he understands that some emotions are too strong to be fully curbed, that love is meant to disturb as often as it calms.

Now, he curves slightly into you even as he continues to meditate, breathing in your scent. There. That's the source of his contentment. You are the source of his contentment.

He meditates for some time, reflecting on you and on love. The highs and the lows, the agonies and the ecstasies. His quiet contemplation is interrupted by you, causing a smile to cross his face at the irony.

You nuzzle into his plastron slightly as you slowly start to wake. He opens his eyes and looks down to find that you've turned your head and opened your own eyes, a sleepy smile on your face.

He reaches out and brushes his thumb gently across your lips, cupping your cheek. You turn into his palm, giving it a small kiss as you stretch.

"Good morning princess," he whispers, and you mumble back as you curl farther into him.

His heart is full as the two of you prepare to begin your day together.
