The Scottish Bauchan
A fascinating figure, known as the Bauchan, originates from Scottish tradition. People often note this faerie for its mischievous behavior. People frequently refer to the Bauchan as a form of hobgoblin or brownie. The Bauchan is believed to inhabit the Highlands of Scotland, engaging in mostly amusing but occasionally problematic activities. The Bauchan, in contrast to a significant number of other animals who appear in folklore, is not intrinsically evil. However, its unexpected behavior, depending on the circumstances, can range from beneficial to frustrating. Some stories depict the Bauchan, similar to a brownie, as assisting humans by performing specific duties or activities around the house or farm. However, mistreatment or insults can turn the Bauchan into a nuisance, hiding equipment, causing minor mishaps, or deceiving those unaware of its existence.
One of the most common depictions of the Bauchan is that it is a shape-shifter, able to change its form in order to fulfill its requirements. Because of this ability, it is able to connect with humans in a variety of different ways, sometimes taking on the appearance of a familiar animal or even taking on a shape that is more associated with humans. As a result of its ability to change its appearance, it is a mysterious figure in Scottish folklore. This feature lends an additional degree of intricacy to its faerie personality. The relationship between people and the Bauchan is often one of reciprocity, with the creature reacting to the treatment it receives from humans. Good deeds towards the Bauchan usually yield rewards, while disrespectful behavior often leads to mischief. This dynamic mirrors a broader theme in folklore, emphasizing the interwoven nature and supernatural realms, and the need to uphold harmony between them. Different cultures have different ways of interpreting the Bauchan, but it frequently reflects concepts related to reverence for the natural world and the invisible forces that inhabit it. The creature acts as a reminder of the significance of respecting one's environment and the residents of that habitat with care and consideration. Viewed in a broader context, the Bauchan symbolizes the unpredictable and capricious nature of life, where seemingly small deeds often determine one's good or bad luck.
Although less famous than other mythical animals, the Bauchan is an important part of Scottish culture. The Bauchan not only illuminates the rich tapestry of folklore passed down from generation to generation, but it also offers a glimpse into the prevalent beliefs and values of earlier communities. Stories told by the Bauchan continue to captivate people's imaginations because they offer a glimpse into a world in which the commonplace and the exceptional coexist. In mythology, the Bauchan continues to be an intriguing fairy figure due to the fact that it possesses a combination of helpfulness and mischief. The tales it tells teach timeless lessons about the importance of respect and reciprocity, as well as the sensitive equilibrium that exists between humans and the supernatural. The Bauchan, evasive and subject to change, conveys the eternal mystery and fascination of the unseen world.

Faebruary Day 2~Bauchan
This is a type of house goblin. He is silly, but kind. I read that house goblins, in general, like to steal any of your important items, so I drew this little guy with a very important key. Give him a treat like milk or cake, and he’ll consider giving it back to you.

Paranormal Star Review
Title: The Monsters Under My Bed #2 The Bauchan
Author: J.B. Trepagnier
Pages: 162
Rating:⭐⭐⭐⭐(4/5)
Synopsis:
Apparently, I’m not a dragon.
What I am is indestructible, capable of healing mortal wounds, and Alastair can never hurt me again. From what I’m understanding, he can’t even use his old tricks if he could manage to force them down my throat. I don’t know where he is, but I’m coming for him. He killed me and hurt Oisin.
I’m home in the Unseelie Court. It’s beautiful but so different than everything I ever knew. I barely have time to see everything before I have to leave again. Shortly after Alastair’s attack, my mother’s ambassador in the Seelie Court went dark with her communications.
It’s not just my job as a princess to make sure Nova is freed. I know how Finnan feels about snitches, but I want to look his parents in the eye when I tell them what he did to me. I might be new to everything regarding the Fae, but I knew what Alastair had done to me was reprehensible in both courts.
And from what I was understanding, if the Seelie still didn’t want to deal with it, it was perfectly acceptable for an Unseelie woman to choose her revenge.

Batfam and Rogues’ Costumes for Damian’s First Halloween
Context: For his first proper Halloween, Damian got really gung-ho about dressing up so Scarecrow and Jason (who both thought it was really cute) got every rogue and Batfam member to dress up and insisted (since Damian was) that everyone pick a costume that reflected their cultural background. A lot of rogues were hesitant but Damian holds that it was the best Halloween he ever had.
Anyway, list’s below the cut, if a rogue isn’t listed it’s because they said no when asked to dress up and no amount of begging changed their mind or I forgot about them. Leaving this untagged but you know, have fun.
Disclaimer: This list applies to Lawfulverse interpretations of the Rogues, some of them are non-white and therefore have non-white monsters.
Damian Wayne (the originator)-A Ghoul (Ghouls are Arabic in origin, also I thought the pun was clever)
Jason Todd-El Sombrerón (a goblin creature in Mexican and Guatemalan folklore)
Jonathan Crane-The Wendigo (wendigo are an Algonquin tradition, among the tribes who believe in the wendigo are the Ojibwe)
Selina Kyle-La Llorona (La Llorona can be found in a lot of Latine nations)
Edward Nygma-Hồ Tinh (similar to the Japanese kitsune, this is a Vietnamese fox demon)
Jervis Tetch-Spriggan (Cornish fae that’s particularly mischievous)
Bane- El Coco (the bogeyman in Hispanophone nations)
Pamela Isley-Banshee (it’s Irish or Scottish and she would)
Harley Quinn-Brownie (house fae)
Joker- Far Darrig (the Irish version of a Redcap, basically a mischievous fae that wears a lot of red)
Drury Walker- Pocong (the wrapped ghost, found in Indonesian and Malaysian folklore)
Garfield Lynns-Puca (a common type of fae found in English folklore)
Basil Karlo-Aswang (Filipino creature similar to a vampire)
Cosmo Krank-Tengu (most people know what a tengu is but for those that don’t know, it’s a Japanese bird demon)
Viktor Zsasz-Vypr/Upyr (a Slavic variation on the vampire, 95% cooler than the modern vampire)
Oswald Cobblepot-Błudnik (a Slavic legendary creature said to live in Łużyce in Poland)
Jaina Hudson-Dokkaebi (Korean nature spirits)
Harvey Dent-Krampus (y’all know what Krampus is, Harvey knows it’s out of season and he doesn’t even celebrate Christmas, but he gives absolutely no shits)
Roxanne Sutton-Ljosalfar (Scandinavian light elves)
Music Meister-Lutin (French equivalent to a hobgoblin, akin to various house spirits)
Mr. Bloom-Yaksha (Hindi nature spirit)
Maxie Zeus-Zephyrus (Maxie literally just dressed up like a Greek wind god it’s nbd guys)
Mary Dahl-Redcap (like Mary wouldn’t dress as a goblin with a red hat on)
Mad Mod-Black Annis (a bogeyman in English folklore, basically a blue-faced hag that eats children)
Waylon Jones-Zonbi (Waylon is Haitian Creole in Lawfulverse, a zonbi is the Haitian Creole word for zombie)
William Tockman-Mullo (Romani variation on a vampire)
Roman Sionis (you know they got him to join this)-Gumiho (Korean form of the kitsune, because Roman agreed to this but not to doing anything that required more legwork than getting a gumiho mask and putting it on his face)
Lonnie Machin-Bauchan (a mischievous Scottish goblin)
Duke Thomas- Curupira (Brazilian folklore creature)
Timothy Drake-Jiangshi (Chinese hopping vampire)
Barbara Gordon-Mermaid (she wanted to, so she did)
Dick Grayson-Strigoi (did someone say more Slavic vampires? Me, I did)
Cassandra Cain-Nu Gui (a vengeful Chinese ghost)
Stephanie Brown-Vila (a nymph in Slavic folklore)
(Bruce gave a definite “no” to this and unfortunately Kate was not in Gotham for Halloween)

Worldbuilding June, Day 3: Who lives in your world?
Here’s a by no means exhaustive list of some of the magical creatures and folks that live in the magical version of Scotland that exists just slightly to the side and (if you try really hard to ignore it) out of sight of the ‘real’ one:
Faeries/the Fair Folk/the Sidhe (keep to themselves in faery hills and rings and other such locations, although this has been getting harder as human settlements have grown and spread over the centuries)
Assorted subcategories of faeries like pixies, brownies, gnomes, bauchans, banshees etc. (mostly ignore humans as humans ignore them, but also fond of mischief and none too friendly to those who bother them)
Selkies (often integrated into seaside communities, or have their own settlements on isolated islands)
Wulvers (human-shaped beings with the heads and fur of wolves, usually peaceful and friendly and found in cities more than most other magical folks)
Kelpies (shapeshifters that usually take the form of horses and lure people into bodies of water where they drown and eat them)
Nuckelavees (monstrous, skinless, centaur-like creatures that bring havoc and death wherever they go)
About a dozen other varieties of demonic water horses, a result of the many unfortunate horses that have been ridden into faery hills by unwise humans and returned changed, much like their riders
Ceasg (mermaids who live in both fresh and salt water and have tails resembling those of salmon)
Glaistig (similar to fauns or satyrs, often found around castles and rumoured to drink blood)
Possibly dragons? (evidence is conflicting)
And whatever the hell is going on in Loch Ness...
Also, sometimes humans spend a little bit too long in magical places and end up with powers of their own, and they’re come to be known as Changelings after the old stories of babies replaced by the Fair Folk.

Hi, do you happen to know anything about cryptids in Scotland? Other than Nessie of course. It seems like an American phenomenon but I'd love to know if you can tell me about anything local!
I love Scotland! And it does actually have quite the extensive list of cryptids, outside of Loch Ness. Nessie is obviously the most famous of them all but here’s a list and short description of some of Scotland’s cryptids!
- Lavellan: A poisonous rodent that lives on rivers and ponds, it’s said it can attack a cow with its poison from about a hundred feet away! However the truth had probably been stretched there.
- Strongsay Beast: A globster found on the beaches of Strongsay after a storm in 1808.
- Giglioli’s Whale: Nothing too spooky about this one, it’s just simply an unidentified species of whale described to have two dorsal fins.
- Morag: A monster that supposedly lives in Loch Morar. It’s had multiple sightings dating back to the 1880’s.
- Am Fear Liath Mór: A grey creature that stalks the passes and summit of Ben Macudi which is the second highest peak of the British Isles.
- Bauchan: A hobgoblin in Scottish folklore. It’s said to be dangerous at times, but sometimes helpful.
- Cat Síth: A large cat (which isn’t uncommon to the UK) it’s got black fur with a big white spot on its chest. It roams the highlands.
- Kelpie: A shapeshifter that typically appears as a horse or human with hooves that lives near lochs and ponds.
There’s plenty more and I’d recommend looking into it some more but I wanted to keep this short and simple with some of the ones I find interesting. There’s about five times the amount I listed though, in fact here’s a good link to start you off! Have a good one my friend, and stay curious!

The Story of Prince Oliver of the Fir Realm
Lady Alena was the last queen of the Fir Realm. As a young princess, she fell in love with a red squirrel, a minstrel named Carillo. Alena's parents disapproved of the match, because reds were thought to be silly creatures and certainly not worthy to be consorts to the royal black squirrels. The two of them ran off together to elope, and no one heard from them for several years. Then one day, Alena returned. She was in a terrible state, and explained that Carillo had been killed in an attack by Hobbers, one from which she had barely managed to escape. She was reluctant to return to the Fir Realm but she had nowhere else to go. Grateful at the return of their daughter and satisfied that her ridiculous folly was at an end, they restored her status as heir to the Fir, but there was still one troubling matter - her son. She had borne a babe in the time she was away. A half-breed he was, part black squirrel and part red squirrel. Many whispered that nothing good could come from the product of such an unnatural union. Added to that was the fact that he was born in the Ash month, for it is considered bad fortune by squirrels to have a birthday in the time of the unloved 'strangling tree'.
Alena remarried a black squirrel prince of her parents' choosing, and with him she had a daughter, Princess Sariah. In time Alena became the new queen of the Fir Realm. Sariah and her half-brother were raised together. Despite his beginnings, Oliver grew into a handsome young squirrel. He became well-liked and respected as all the misgivings folk had about him were eventually forgotten. He stole the heart of many a squirrel maiden, and was by far the most talented musician in the realm. But for all his talent, he was stubborn and rebellious, often refusing to play the music he was told to for official ceremonies. Silly, overelaborate pageantry he called it. The dutiful Princess Sariah was terribly embarrassed by her brother's behaviour. Oft times they were to perform duets, but he rarely showed up for them, and when he did his reluctance was apparent. He was at his happiest sitting high in the branches of the central oak, gently strumming his lute and singing soft folk songs, usually composed by he himself. His headstrong ways, combined with his naivete, would eventually bring doom upon the realm in the year 1542. Though he played an unwitting role in its destruction, history long maligned him as a traitor, for Bauchan had taken on the prince's form and in that guise opened the land's borders to the bloodthirsty Hobbers.
Afterward the relations between the black and red squirrels were strained. The black squirrels blamed the reds for tainting the royal blood and causing what had happened to the Fir Realm. This all culminated in a long war between the two kinds of squirrel. It is rumoured that it was in the midst of one of these battles that the black squirrel maiden known as Audrey ran up the slopes of Greenreach to become the new Starwife. In the end, the numbers of black squirrels were sorely reduced and the similarly depleted reds were forced to retreat - having been banished from the remaining noble houses. Indeed they went away... never to return, it was said. But as each of the ancient kingdoms was felled by unrelated circumstances and grey squirrels arrived and started to populate the forests, feelings of enmity were forgotten. Reds began to be welcomed back amongst others of their kind. However, the Starwife always knew of course that the reds (and the Fir prince) were blameless, and lamented the hatred that had kept the squirrel cousins apart for so long.

7. Laughter
Beau felt jittery as he lied in bed, hidden behind a yellow canopy. He had never slept anywhere beside his own house before, and then he usually slept in his own bed. The thought made him regret that he hadn’t spent his last night at home sleeping next to his papa; they had done it a lot when he was younger and had nightmares, but as Beau got older and Pyri slept over more, it stopped happening.
He couldn’t name the ache in his heart or the uneasiness in his stomach as he stared up at the foreign ceiling, listening to new sounds, and getting used to new smells. Somehow this was more overwhelming than being surrounded by excitable children that couldn’t believe that they were meeting Harry Potter. Not that Beau could believe them either; he had not been Harry Potter for ten years. He had no intentions to start now, but he didn’t know how he could possibly disappoint a whole school full of people by refusing the name he was famous as.
If he had been unable to sleep earlier, he was definitely unable to sleep now. The emotions felt too big for his body, and the sudden anxiety overwhelmed him.
If it helps, The Voice spoke up. I prefer Beau over Harry.
Beau smiled; it did help a little. Then again, if The Voice really was Voldemort - something he had yet to fully come to terms with - then it was understandable that Beau was preferable. Beau liked him, Harry was supposed to have defeated him and was surely expected to defeat him again.
He wondered if Dumbledore would confront him with those expectations. His smile disappeared as he thought about what his papa had said about his new headmaster.
You could explore the castle, The Voice suddenly suggested. That would get your mind off things. I still remember the secret passages.
You’re being nice, Beau commented, but got out of his bed anyway. He could try to find the kitchens if nothing else; he had heard one of the older students mention that they were close.
Otherwise I would have to listen to your homesickness and anxiety the whole night. I have better things to do.
Beau couldn’t help but giggle; he couldn’t imagine what else The Voice could have to do than be in his head and listen to his thoughts.
If you’re going to laugh at me, I won’t tell you how to get into the kitchen, The Voice said, more offended than Beau had expected him to be.
Okay, I promise to not laugh at you, Beau answered. He didn’t stop smiling or imagine what The Voice could possibly get up to though.
Sanguini looked down into the half-empty glass of wine in his hand without actually seeing anything. It had been nice of Pyrites to distract him earlier, but now he couldn’t stop thinking about how empty the house felt without Beau. The silence felt heavy and suffocating, much like it used to do before Beau became a part of his life. He hadn’t been aware that he depended so much on his son; it was not a feeling that he liked. He had been too dependant in the past… not that that situation could ever be compared to missing Beau.
“Your wine won’t drink itself,” Pyrites pointed out. Sanguini had almost forgotten that he still was there.
“I don’t want it,” Sanguini sighed and put down the glass on the table. He moved to stand up.
“What about blood?” Pyrites offered. Sanguini gave him a considering looking, and then shaked his head.
“Maybe I should sleep,” he said after a moment of silence.
“Do you think you’ll be able to?” Pyrites asked, worry in his tone. “It’s not that long since you last slept…”
“That I mostly ignore the need until I collapse don’t mean that I’m unable to,” Sanguini explained. “I prefer avoiding the suffocating void of dreamlessness, but that’s another thing.”
“You don’t have to stay here. You could come with me to my home.”
Sanguini focused back on Pyrites, obvious surprise in his eyes.
“To be honest, I had forgotten that you have a home of your own.”
“I feel special,” Pyrites drawled. “I can leave you alone if you prefer.”
“No,” Sanguini forced a smile. “I want to see where you live.”
Pyrites offered his hand, and Sanguini accepted it. One moment they were in his dark kitchen, the next they were outside a small manor in Scotland.
“My father’s side of the family is Scottish, as you know,” Pyrites explained. “He gave me the manor when I graduated.”
“That explains the statues,” was the only thing Sanguini managed to get out. There were two ridiculous statues, one on each side of the door. To the right was a gigantic statue of a bauchan, and to the left was a statue of an each-uisge that seemed to be in mid transformation; it looked like a humanoid horse with a parrot-like beak shaped muzzle. It was hard to not laugh at the grotesque styles the statues were in; they were rather offensive.
“I keep forgetting to do something about them,” Pyrites admitted. “I have no idea which distant relative thought they would be a good idea.”
“Is the inside any better?” Sanguini asked, a real smile on his lips.
“You’ll see,” Pyrites opened the door for them. “But we could go directly to the bedroom…”
“Thank you for getting me out of the house,” Sanguini said as he entered the house. “Again.”
“Your company is my pleasure,” Pyrites made sure to close the door behind them before taking his hand and kissing it. Sanguini couldn’t help but laugh. He felt a lot better now.
“You mentioned a bedroom?”
