In Azerbaijan, we will be visiting the capital city of Baku and its surroundings, before moving on to historic locations such as Shamakhi and Sheki on the way to Georgia. Over in Georgia, we will be visiting its major cities such as Tbilisi and Batumi, beautiful regions such as Kakhuti and Kutaisi, as well as small towns and villages that dot the Caucasus mountain range such as Bakuriani, Gudauri and Kazbegi.

Day-to-day Itinerary for Discover Azerbaijan & Georgia

Below is a trip itinerary on what to expect each day for 16 days around Azerbaijan and Georgia

Day 1, 2, 3 & 4: Start in Baku

Wake up to a new day in Azerbaijan after a day of flying from Kuala Lumpur. Upon arrival in Baku, you will be met at Baku Heydar Aliyev Airport, and be transferred to your accommodation in Baku for check-in. Take advantage of the free time given to you to explore the capital city of Azerbaijan that lies along the shoreline of the world's largest lake, the Caspian Sea. Go on foot or by metro, but make sure that you don’t miss the Flame Towers, three towers built to resemble a fire burning over the city at night!

The next day, go on a sightseeing tour of Baku, and visit Martyr’s Lane for a panoramic view of the city. Relive history at the medieval fortress of Icheri Seher, otherwise known as Old Baku. Here, you can see highlights such as Maiden’s Tower and Shirvanshah Palace. Finally, we get to step out of the city for a bit and go on a short excursion outside of the city to visit “Ateshgah”, the Temple of Fire and Yanar Dagh or "Burning Mountain", one of Azerbaijan's most enduring images, a mountain of flames fed by the seemingly never-ending reserves of natural gas that seep through the earth from deep below.

Did you know that Azerbaijan has the highest number of mud volcanoes in the world? 350 to be exact! On your final day in Baku, go on a full day excursion to Gobustan, a region that’s famous for its mud volcanoes. Often referred to as the Azerbaijan version of Stonehenge (in the United Kingdom), another highlight of Gobustan is a prehistoric cromlech (a circle of stones that have been positioned vertically) and over 6,000 petroglyphic paintings, some dating back as far as the stone age! Visit the archaeological reserve there, and study the way of life of people from a long lost epoch!

Day 5: Shamakhi & Sheki

Today, we depart Baku and make our way to Sheki, stopping by to marvel at the impressive Diri Baba Mausoleum in Maraza Village. Our next stop, Shamakhi, located halfway between Baku and Sheki, is well known for its Juma Mosque and the Yeddi Gumbaz mausoleum, nicknamed the ‘Seven Domes’ by the locals here because of the number of gravestones in the area.

From Shamakhi, we stop to overnight in Sheki, one of the oldest settlements in the Caucasus. Having been inhabited for more than 2,700 years, Sheki sits square on the old Silk Road, and has a few beautifully preserved caravanserai. If you haven’t heard of caravanserai before, they’re essentially roadside inns used in times past to accommodate traders plying their trade on the Silk Road.

In addition, there are also castles, mosques, and even ancient bathhouses, as well as the Palace of Sheki Khans that has stood since the 18th century. Considered by many to be an architectural wonder, this is even more impressive given the fact that the palace was built entirely without the use of nails! Make sure to check out the beautiful wall paintings and stained glass windows when you visit!

Day 6 & 7: Kakheti

It’s time to bid farewell to Azerbaijan. From Sheki, we cross the border into Georgia, and begin our exploration of a new country in Kakheti, Georgia’s famous wine region dotted with fine old churches and vineyards. Continue on to Kvareli and Gremi where you can admire the royal citadel and the Church of the Archangels. Finish up the day with a short visit to Tsinandali Residence and Alaverdi Cathedral, among the most well-known antique churches and one of the tallest cathedrals in Georgia.

The next morning, head south east to see the Bodbe Monastery, and gain insight into the famous landmark’s links to the 4th-century female evangelist St. Nino, known for preaching Christianity in Georgia and is one of the most respected and honoured saints of the Georgian Orthodox Church. Continue on to Sighnaghi, a beautiful hillside town with stunning panoramic views of Alazni Valley and the Eastern Caucasus mountains. Take your time to explore the town on foot or partake in optional wine tasting. Continue on and end your day at Tbilisi.

Day 8: Tbilisi

Another day, another city. This time at Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia. Go on a full day city tour and experience the city’s highlights such as its old town, Metekhi temple, Abanotubani and Narikala fortress. Continue on by visiting Sioni Cathedral, Anchiskhati Church, the Georgian National Museum and finally, Rustaveli Avenue, the main street of Tbilisi. End your day with a funicular train ride up Mount Mtatsminda for a spectacular view of the city.

Day 9: Mtskheta & Kutaisi

Begin the day with a visit to Mtskheta, the former capital and one of the oldest cities in Georgia. Here, Christianity was adopted by the Georgians as early as the 4th century. Mtskheta is steeped in so much history that the town and its architectural monuments are recognized as World Heritage Sites by UNESCO. Later, continue on to Gori, Uplistsikhe cave town and finally Kutaisi, where you can visit the Gelati Monastery, the final resting place of King David IV, its founder and one of the greatest Georgian kings.

Day 10: Batumi

Do you love spelunking? Well, be prepared to be amazed today as we visit the Prometheus Caves, just 20km away from Kutaisi. At 1.4km long complete with six large caverns and a massive underground lake, it’s the largest cave in Georgia! Continue along the picturesque Black Sea coast, before finally arriving in Batumi, the capital of Adjara. It serves as a seaport and is home to many beautiful sights such as the Botanical Gardens, Batumi Boulevard, Piazza and Neptune Square.

Day 11 & 12: Bakuriani

Wake up to a pleasant morning in Batumi, and feel free to use whatever free time you’re given to explore the city on foot. You could also go on an optional side excursion to Batumi Botanical Gardens, one of the largest in the region. In the afternoon, drive to Bakuriani, a beautiful ski resort surrounded by the Lesser Caucasus Mountains in the southern part of Georgia. Spend the night in Bakuriani.

On the next day, go on a drive along the scenic Kura Valley to Vardzia. Enroute, stop at Khertvisi fortress, built in the middle ages and is one of the oldest fortress in Georgia. Our highlight of the day, Vardzia, is a 12th century cave town and a unique example of the Georgian Renaissance, often associated with the likes of Queen Tamara and Shota Rustaveli, the author of the legendary poem "The Knight in the Panther’s Skin". On the way back, stop by at Rabati Castle, an old part of Akhaltsikhe. Spend your final night in Bakuriani.

Day 13 & 14: Gudauri & Kazbegi

From Bakuriani, today we visit Borjomi, famous for its mineral water industry, which is Georgia’s top export. Continue on a drive along the Georgian Military Highway, a historical road that leads north into the Caucasus Mountains. Enroute, the road will cut through spectacular mountain scenery and passing by Ananuri fortress and the dramatic Aragvi River Valley. Spend the night at Gudauri ski resort, located at an elevation of 2,000 meters above sea level.

To end our trip on a high note, we make the journey to Kazbegi (now known as Stepantsminda) the next day. With majestic views of the surrounding Caucasus mountains, Kazbegi is a picturesque village overlooking Mount Kazbek, Georgia’s third highest mountain at a height of 5,047m. Marvel at it all from the Gergeti Trinity Church located on the hilltop before heading back to Tbilisi for your final night in Georgia.

Day 15 & 16: End in Tbilisi

After a little over two weeks of exploring Azerbaijan and Georgia, it’s finally time to say farewell. End your tour by transferring to Tbilisi International Airport for your flight home. Touch down in Kuala Lumpur the next day with the fondest of memories from your trip.
