hey so like. what ttrpgs are out there that are dnd-like but "narrative focused" gameplay

im talking magic high fantasy, picking classes and class builds, magic, magic items, dungeons and stuff. feels like every recommendation for a new ttrpg is something incredibly not that at all.

i find the placement of where some dnd classes get their subclasses so strange

i get a fighter being a specialist after learning the fundamentals, a warlock getting their subclass at first level because its based on their patron

but why does a ranger wait 3 levels to get their subclass?

its just weird to me because like. waiting until 3rd level to get your lifelong animal/dragon buddy just doesnt seem right. Horizon Walkers just suddenly go "ah i know what portals smell like"

I feel like rangers should've had their subclass at first level

Ive been thinkin abt what a friend said after i told him abt meepo, that kobolds fate is to die in a tragic yet hilarious manner. N now i wanna make a kobold w that (ua?) Undead rogue subclass thats like all abt havin come bsck from the dead meowtiple times n just. Makin it a bunch of stupid deaths like that instead of the assumed edgelordness

the idea of a undead pact warlock getting its powers, only if they die in the dumbest fucking ways is hilarious. "yeah my patron will intervene if i made him laugh hard enough with my death, otherwise i Will Just Die" (also as of Van Richten's Guide To Ravenloft, undead pact warlock is no longer ua)

other fun pathfinder facts: gunslingers(and there melee counterparts the swashbucklers) literally have coolness as a resource, like its called grit/panache but its refilled by doing things the dm deems cool and ballsy enough(and a few guaranteed things like crits) and is used for things like using a hot muzzle to cauterize your wound

I haven't played pathfinder in fuckin' ages but I remember really loving a subclass I was playing, the *guntank*. fully kitted out they used full plate a tower shield and a revolver

THE GUN TANK. WALKING FORTRESS OF ROOTN' TOOTIN' BLOCK THEN SHOOTIN'. that sounds like a Really fun character, mechanically and flavor-wise!

pathfinder peeps how do you live like this, the feats page on d20pfsrd has like over 200 feats to pick from what on earth do you pick for your first I can feel my mind expanding trying to make a character for this system and i’m afraid my brain is going to pop

Aw that would be adorable as well!! The only disappointment type of familiar is no familiar at all.

Yeah thats the thing, I Like the numbers system of these ttrpgs. it's why i keep getting drawn back to 5e, pathfinder, starfinder, i just like numbers better than fudge, or PbtA. Though, that one starwars system, Edge Of The Empire? that system is SO fun

i know we are past tabletop time but i just want to inform you one of pathfinders archtypes is literally "wizard with a gun"

I actually went and looked at how this one works and boy i was so fucking confused at first. "why does this archtype only have 4 options" Wizards in pathfinder only get 4 class features? AND THEY'RE ALL AT LEVEL ONE? this archtype is genuinely very interesting though. Like. making me want to make a pathfinder character interested.
