Happy 64th birthday to Adam Kubert Kubert within the Batman’s universe inked and lettered the 1991 DC and Dark Horse Comics crossover limited series ‘Batman Versus Predator’, winning the 1992 Eisner Award for Best Inking.
Batman Versus Predator - The inter-company crossover craze didn’t just contain itself within the fictional comics worlds, but also massive film franchises. One being 20th Century Fox’ “Predator”, which not only crossed paths with other characters such as Judge Dredd and the Justice League, but also the Batman in the beginning of the 1990s. DC Comics and Dark Horse Comics collided to bring the three part series “Batman Versus Predator”, the first graphic novel published in 1991. Written by Dave Gibbons and illustrated by Andy Kubert, Adam Kubert, and Sherilyn Van Valkenburgh, when Batman investigates the gruesome murder of a boxer and this death’s connection between two Gotham City crime bosses, his goal of stopping the start of a bloody turf war turns into staying alive himself.
The culprit of these deaths, which include skinning the victim alive, is none other than the extraterrestrial Predator. The Dark Knight comes face to face with this monster and barely hangs on to life. After escaping the Predator’s clutches, Bruce Wayne begins the long process of healing with the help of Alfred Pennyworth. During this time, the Predator has been leaving a bloody trail throughout Gotham, prompting the GCPD and SWAT to plan the ultimate attack. The Caped Crusader, although not fully healed and barely able to stand, creates an exoskeleton Batsuit and weaponry to hold his own against the beast. Fighting throughout the city and ending up at Wayne Manor, with an extremely effective tranquilizer used by the Batman and a blunderbuss used by Alfred, Predator was wounded enough to claim defeat and kills himself with a sword. In December 1994, the Dark Knight faces The Predator again in Doug Moench’s four issue arc “Batman vs Predator II: Bloodmatch” and Chuck Dixon’s 1997 four issue arc “Batman: Predator III: Blood Ties”.

Next chunk of the pre-NML stuff, to the end of 1996.
Batman versus Predator II: Bloodmatch
Yes this is in mainline continuity. Just thought you should know.
Honestly not the worst Helena feature I've read.
Troika (Robin #14 and Tec #682-683)
I hate Bullock. I know this is an attempt to give Renee connections but I simply do not care and I hope he stays in a coma so I don't have to see him.
This does make me like KGBeast more. He's not a good character but he's so over-the-top it's fun.
Homecoming (Showcase '95 #3)
Vic's back!
This is a solid showcase for him. Not the most revealing story or anything, but he's in good form and gets to reminisce. A good change of pace from the Bat-event-overload.
Guy Gardner: Warrior #29
Apparently appearing in Showcase made people remember him enough to have him cameo. That or it's because a couple other Charlton guys are here.
Renee gets a new partner who I hate way less, which lasts all of two issues, and a boyfriend, who lasts a little longer.
Azrael #10
Vic and Shiva bump into each other at a karate tournament in Gotham. Neither of them do anything about the guy in the Azbat costume, they're just chilling.
Contagion
The first event I'm recording in full, since Renee's in more than half the issues anyways and it's part of the NML buildup.
Her boyfriend dies. RIP. Made it a whole eight months.
I'm mixed on Contagion. It's got a lot of strong moments, this is a good era for grim and moody Batman, but there's more Gotham-in-crisis to come that I like more. Hard not to compare it to the rest of NML, yknow?
Deadbolt (Tec 697-699)
Lock-Up is another transfer from BTAS. I have a lot of thoughts on how he gets used compared to how the cops are treated, but I've been ignoring that part of my brain so I can get this project done, so it's whatever. I am being normal. Tim is funny.
Batman: GCPD
Oh boy. I had my hopes up for a moment that Bullock would finally fuck off for a while and I'd get to stop looking at him but nope, it's just even heavier on the police brutality apologism than usual. Fuck this so much.
Chuck Dixon is an enormous piece of shit, what a surprise.
Legacy
Contagion but again and with Ra's Al Ghul. Not recording this one in full.

Tim’s Favorite Movie Project: Predator
Predator (1987)
Directed by John McTiernan
Starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Carl Weathers, Jesse Ventura, Sonny Landham, Elpidia Carrillo, Bill Duke, Shane Black, Richard Chaves, Kevin Peter Hall
Released June 12, 1987
Plot: When a foreign cabinet minister and his aide are captured by insurgents in the jungles of an unnamed South American country (but…we all know it’s Val Verde, right?), the CIA calls in a team of mercenaries who specialize in rescues. The hunters soon become the hunted as someone or something begins to pick off the soldiers one by one.
One of my favorites because: Predator is the ultimate 1980s action movie. Arnold Schwarzenegger has rarely been as good and has never been better than he was as Dutch, at the peak of his physicality and in a role tailored to his strengths as an actor – and yes, Arnold is an actor, and a very smart one. The plot is straightforward and action heavy without being dumb or lacking twists and complications. The characters are well defined individuals, easy to invest in. But what makes Predator a capital-A Action classic is that John McTiernan constructs the action setpieces in the film in the same way that he would later build Die Hard: each one is distinct and could stand alone as a short film; each one progresses the plot and develops the characters; and each one builds in length and intensity as the characters’ numbers are whittled down. Predator also avoids many of the elements typical of 1980s action that could be considered problematic or could date the film – sure, it doesn’t come close to passing the Bechdel test, and it features a famous f-bomb (the other f-bomb), but it also features a racially diverse cast and a female character who is allowed to hold her own with the men in terms of intelligence and toughness without being sexualized or masculinized. Predator is gritty, grimy, sweaty, muddy, and very bloody. It’s by turns bright and beautiful, and very dark. Predator is adrenaline pumping entertainment that has stood the test of time.
My relationship to this movie: I used to see the VHS boxes of Predator and Predator 2 in Video to Go (the slightly more indie of two independent video rental stores in Penn Yan), but neither cover’s art really said what the film was about – Predator had Schwarzenegger with a gun against a tie-die background and crosshairs over his armpit, Predator 2 just had a cloudy sky over a city skyline against a sunset. When I was in maybe 6th grade, someone loaned me the TPB of Batman Versus Predator II: Bloodmatch and I was blown away – I had to see what this movie was. I had heard that some of my friends had watched it at a birthday party some years prior, so I campaigned hard to get my parents to let me rent it. FINALLY they did, and my dad and I watched it on the small TV in my parents’ room so my younger siblings wouldn’t be upset. It was intense for me because I kept expecting dad to turn it off and say it was too violent, but I loved it – I was shocked by the gore and thrilled by the action. Dad actually liked the movie – “Quite a plot twist!” was his reaction (I think he had missed the space ship at the very beginning). In the more than 25 years since, I have owned the film on multiple formats (I currently own three Blu-ray copies - the original release, the 3-D conversion, and a box-set with the remastered "Ultimate Hunter Edition" disc), and I have no idea how many times I’ve seen it. I watch it every summer, when the weather is hot.
My favorite _________: Predator is my favorite macho action movie from the 1980s.
List Position at Debut:Predator is the thirteenth entry in this project and starts at number three. (I was a bit surprised it was that high!)

Hi, thanks for answering my last ask. I'm almost done reading through the starter guide you had layed out for Helena Bertinelli, save for the original 1989 comic I still need to find. Are there any other stories with her worth checking out? I'm a Batman reader by trade so those stories appeal to me more but I did have a lot of fun with Birds of Prey, not gonna lie!
No Man's Land is really good and more Batman centric. I'm going to link you an ask where I talk about specific issues where Helena appears:
You could also check out:
Shadow of the Bat #53
Detective Comics #652, 653, 720, 721, 763
Huntress/Spoiler: Blunt Trauma
Detective Comics #859-865 aka The Question: Pipeline
Batman versus Predator II: Bloodmatch
DCU Holiday Special 2008
Showcase '93 #9-10
Showcase '94 #5-6
Huntress (1994) #1-4
Batman: Chronicles #1, 14
Batman The Brave and The Bold #11, 14
Catwoman (1997) #51-52
Helena's early stories, before she joined the Birds of Prey are way better than after she joined the team. Before she joined the team she was way more involved with the Batfam too. And Bruce was pretty rough on her, but he also kept offering her the city in his absence and he kept telling her that she should take over if he died.
